The company Bed in a Box was one of the pioneers of offering compressed mattresses online. Their Silk Symphony Mattress is a two-sided mattress with one side being relatively soft and the other firm. This mattress comes with a 120-night trial and 20-year warranty. Bed in a Box makes all their mattresses in the USA. This company has been around long before the latest wave of online brands. They also offer the whole bedroom solution from pillows to adjustable beds.

My Silk Symphony Findings

I first tried the soft side of the mattress and that’s the side I like best. Here’s a picture with my bowling ball that illustrates how much sinkage you can expect. The bowling ball weighs 14 lbs.

Here’s the same bowling ball on the firm side of the mattress where you will notice it doesn’t sink much at all.

To give you an even better idea of how this mattress feels, here’s a video that illustrates motion transfer on the mattress.

Here’s a video showing how fast heat dissipates from the top of the mattress. I found this mattress to sleep fairly cool for being all foam.

My Silk Symphony Recommendation

The Silk Symphony is an excellent mattress for people who want an initial plush feel but want really good support. Although it looks like you can really sink into this mattress, I found that it gives great support and will sleep cool. This is the first mattress I tried where there is silk blended into the cover. I’m not sure how much silk is used compared to other material but it definitely has a silky smooth feel and silk is great for regulating temperature as anyone with a silk comforter can tell you.

The Silk Symphony is on the pricier end of the spectrum at \$1,599 for a queen size however it is two-sided and you get two comfort levels built in so it would make a great mattress for guests.

Also, because it has two firmness options, It is great for all sleep types.

Is the Purple Pet Bed Good for Dogs and Cats?

Yes, I think it’s safe to say any animal with Paws will be able to appreciate this bed as much as humans love their Purple mattress.

The Purple Pet Bed is a great addition to the purple offering. It really rounds out their line of products and puts Purple in a category by itself. By that I mean they have been able to find many uses for their innovative comfort grid. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more expansion in the near future. Purple furniture anyone?

My Purple Dog Bed Findings

Although this is officially listed as a pet bed, I think the majority of people will use this as a dog bed. My 5-month-old mini Australian Shepherd really took to this bed.

The bed is made so that you can remove the cover and it is machine washable. I washed this cover and dried it in the dryer on low heat and there was no shrinkage and it was super easy to put back on.

Underneath the cover is a waterproof membrane that feels very familiar to the Purple mattress protector. It’s stretchy and so will work with the polymer grid.

Here’s a look at the inside of the bed. It has the same polymer grid that the Purple Mattress uses, just less thick.

My Purple Pet Bed Recommendation

Overall this isn’t a cheap pet bed. I bought the medium size which currently retails for $189. I expect this bed to last a while and my pet has no complaints. I recommend this to pets that tend to get hot because it works the same way as their popular mattresses and I found their mattresses to sleep very cool and I highly recommend them to hot sleepers. I also like the fact that the cover is easy to remove and wash. This is a low maintenance good looking pet bed that should last year.

The Moona is a pad that you can place on or inside your pillowcase or use even without a pillow to keep your head cool. It works by channeling cool water through small tubes. This is a great solution for people that tend to sleep hot but do not want to commit to a higher-cost device like a Chilipad or Eight Sleep Pod. This device is also smaller and can fit on your nightstand. At $399 it is something to consider for people constantly flipping their pillows to keep cool.

Ordering Your Moona

You can order the Moona directly from their website. Mine arrived at my doorstep in a little over a week.

The packaging is clean and well designed. They even include a bag to store the pad when not in use.

This is everything that came in the box and setting it up is very easy. You just plug it in and attach the cables to the back of the Moona unit. Then fill it with distilled water.

To fill the Moona you just unscrew the cap and add water with the included funnel. Just make sure it’s distilled water. This will prevent any minerals from building up.

How Much Does the Moona Cost?

The Moona currently retails for $399. This includes the device itself and of course the app is free. It also comes with a 30-night trial and 1-year warranty.

My Moona Pillow Findings

I was initially afraid that the Moona would feel like sleeping on a cold plastic bag. Because it has water running through it, the membrane needs to be waterproof. To address this problem, they added small foam cubes to the vinyl pad so that you get some decent cushioning and airflow. On top of that is another thinner pad with a jersey knit cover. Despite this, I still preferred to put it underneath my pillowcase.

The Moona is designed to fit a standard pillow but it will work on a king-size pillow too, it just won’t cover the entire pillow. Here you can see it on my king-size pillow for reference.

My first night on the pillow took some adjustment. At first, I didn’t notice any effect but then I realized I set the app to turn on at 11pm and I went to bed at 10 pm. Once I adjusted the time, it kicked in, and started to feel the water start to cool the pad. The recommended fall asleep temp is 76 degrees as seen below with the temperature gradually rising to naturally wake you up in the morning at the time you choose.

I initially thought this was too warm of a temp so I dropped it down to 70 but soon realized 76 is plenty and later that night I woke up and found it to be too cold and had to increase it close to 80. So just keep in mind it will take a few nights to find the ideal sleeping temperature but once you do, it works seamlessly and in the morning the app will ask how you slept so you can keep track of your progress.

I like how simple this is to use. If you find yourself too warm or cold during the night, there are buttons on the top of the unit to increase or decrease the temp which is easier than accessing the app at night with a bright screen to wake you up.

My Moona Recommendation

At $399 the Moona is a considerable investment but certainly much less expensive than the full mattress alternatives like Chilipad or Eight Sleep. It also works on your head which the others cannot do so if you do use an Eight Sleep or Chilipad and like the benefits, this would be a good addition. If you already like your mattress and sleeping hot is an issue, I would recommend starting with the Moona. It made a noticeable difference in how I slept and is the only solution I currently know of that can keep your head cool all night long.

There is a certain comfort to it that is difficult to shake, and even more difficult to shop for. So many pillow manufacturing companies try to create products that are a one-size-fits-all but this rarely works.

Noel O’Conner, the Irish inventor behind the Reflex Pillow, is a specialist in the treatment of back and neck pain since 1987.

After having to both see and treat countless patients, he was motivated to create a pillow that could alleviate so many of the issues that come from poor sleep such as neck pain, spinal alignment, sleep apnoea, snoring, insomnia and even teeth grinding.

Being that it’s being shipped to you directly from Ireland, shipping on top of that is €25.00 which is roughly $30.87. The pillow can only be purchased directly through their site.

Construction of the Reflex Pillow

The Reflex Pillow is 610mm long x 412mm wide x 110mm high. In inches that means it’s 24” long x 16.22” wide x 4.33” high. It has a flat bottom base along with a shaped top surface. It weighs 2 kg which is about 4.4 lbs. It’s suitable for all standard pillow cases.

It’s specially formulated with a non toxic foam material, also known as Reflex Foam, which was specifically created to be used in this product. Reflex Foam is 50% softer than memory foam.

My Reflex Pillow Findings

I really consider the Reflex Pillow to be a substantial and high quality product. Given it’s price that’s precisely what it should be and that’s exactly what it is. While it isn’t said to be for side sleepers only, this is the impression that I was given when reading this:

The Reflex Pillow is constructed with some amazing contouring. It’s a pillow that finally pays mind to the all of the details of the body when considering the head, neck and shoulders. There is an anti-headroll ridge in the center, there are 2 head dips, as seen in the image above, and then there is a neck support and shoulder slot. And let me tell you, that shoulder slot is heavenly.

In in the information guide that came with the pillow, there is no indication of how to sleep on the Reflex Pillow if you were sleeping on your back because I don’t believe it was designed for that. If it were, why else have the ridge in the center?

I am usually reluctant when it comes to foam pillows but this one is really different because it’s not created with memory foam. In fact Reflex Foam is 50% softer than memory foam. Reflex foam is soft, comfortable, pleasant but also supportive. When laying on it for the first time I could tell that it still provides adequate support for the neck and shoulder. Overall it gives stability without feeling stiff.

My Reflex Pillow Recommendation

One of the first things that stood out to me about the product was the passion involved in creating it. Noel O’Conner, a back and neck pain specialist, put himself out there on crowdfunding websites like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo to fuel his dream and create a product that would be effective in helping people overcome their neck pain and spinal alignment issues. He ended up raising twice the amount of his original goal, which gave me the awesome opportunity to try it.

The pillow is costly, there’s no doubt about that but you pay a high price for high quality goods, that’s just the reality. I also actually like that you have to purchase it from their website directly. It says a lot about how important it is to the company to handle their own product and their own customer service. For people who are truly suffering with pain from sleeping or pain overall, that can easily worsen with poor pillow support, the Reflex Pillow is absolutely worth the investment. I’ve slept on it only for 1 night so far but can’t express just how impressed I am with it. It looks and feels like a high quality product in every way. My Recore Mattress Findings

Starting from the top, the stretch knit cover provides for maximum contouring and breathability. It also has a zipper so you can remove and wash it.

The Recore has just the right amount of sink to it so that it’s truly versatile enough for any sleeping postion. It’s also easy to switch positions at night given the top layer of foam is very responsive.

Here’s a look a how much my 14lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress.

Here’s another view to show you sinkage and how much edge support you can expect.

This mattress has a zippered cover which is common for roll packed mattresses but it is positioned so that you don’t have to lift up the mattress to access it. This makes it much easier to remove and wash if you need to. Although, I strongly recommend a mattress protector.

In the video below I show you how much motion transfer to expect on the mattress. As you can see the other bowling ball hardly moves but the one that I dropped actually has some bounce which is rare for a foam mattress.

When you unzip the cover you will see that the top layer of foam has some holes in it which provides more breathability and air flow.

Here’s a side view of the layering. The middle layer is the cooling gel layer followed by the base support foam.

Here’s a video showing how each layer reacts. The graphite latex top layer is the most responsive and the layer of cooling gel foam below it provides great pressure relief. The base layer is standard and provides a stable surface.

My Recore Bed Recommendation

The Recore mattress is a perfect choice for someone new to memory foam. You get all the pressure relieving benefits of foam but without the drawbacks of sleeping hot. Without springs you don’t have to worry about motion transfer either. With this mattress, there’s really no reason you would need or want springs.

I highly recommend this mattress to couples that have different sleep positions and have problems with partner disturbance at night. The Recore will certainly solve that problem. If it’s been a while since you have been in the market for a new mattress, you will be pleasantly suprised at how far foam technology has come and you get it all in the Recore.
