These three get sold interchangeably and they do completely different jobs. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake we see.
Mattress pad
Goal: adjust the surface. A quilted layer, usually under an inch thick, that adds mild softness, wicks moisture, or — in powered versions — cools and heats the bed. Not usually waterproof.
Mattress protector
Goal: defence. A thin fitted barrier that blocks liquid, sweat, dust mites and allergens. It should not change the feel of the bed at all. Cheapest insurance in the bedroom.
Mattress topper
Goal: change firmness. Two to four inches of foam or latex that meaningfully alters support and feel. This is what you want for a too-firm bed — see our toppers guide.
How to choose a mattress pad
1. Start with the problem, not the product
Too hot → an active water or air pad, or at minimum bamboo viscose or cotton. Too cold → a heated pad with dual controls and auto shut-off. Too firm → a topper, not a pad. Worried about spills, kids or pets → a waterproof protector. Want a nicer surface feel → a quilted natural-fibre pad.
2. Match the pocket depth to your mattress
Measure your mattress including the pillow top. Most pads fit 14–16 inches; tall hybrids need a deep-pocket or 18-inch-plus skirt or the corners will pop off nightly.
3. Decide whether you want electronics in the bed
Powered pads deliver results passive fabric cannot, but they add a hub, a cord, noise and maintenance, and they cannot go in the washing machine. If that sounds like a hassle, a bamboo or cotton pad plus a mattress that sleeps cool on its own is the calmer route.
4. Understand what cooling really means

5. Check the fill, not just the cover
A bamboo or cotton cover over dense polyester fill still traps heat. Down alternative and cotton fill breathe; thick memory foam inside a "pad" behaves like a cheap topper and sleeps warm.
Care and safety
Quilted pads: wash every two to three months on a gentle cold cycle and tumble dry low — high heat melts the polyester binding and ruins the loft. Protectors: monthly, and always dry them fully so the membrane does not mildew.
Heated pads. Buy only UL-certified pads with automatic shut-off. Never run one folded or bunched, never pinch it in an adjustable base hinge, don't use one for infants, and retire any pad with a frayed cord or scorch mark. Unplug the controllers before washing.
Water and air systems: rinse or replace the filter on schedule, use distilled water in the reservoir to avoid mineral build-up, and spot-clean the pad only — the electronics never go in the machine.
