Tempurpedic is synonymous with memory foam but they also have a few models with springs. The Tempur breeze hybrid is their top of the line model with foams and pocket coils. Adding the coils give this mattress a unique feel that sets it apart from the rest of their lineup in that it has a slightly faster recovery and will sink in faster and provide a bit more cradling. This is a great choice for people new to memory foam mattresses that still want the familiar feel of springs
Overview of the Tempurpedic TEMPUR – breeze hybrid
Here’s a video review of the Tempurpedic hybrid. These mattresses feel as good as they look and the quality is unsurpassed.
Construction of the TEMPUR – breeze hybrid
Below are the construction specifications of the mattress as listed on their website. Tempurpedic doesn’t disclose the densities of their foam but it is a dense foam, denser than what you will find in most online brands. Dense foam will hold up better over time and is great for contouring and pressure relief.

Tempurpedic usually always has some sort of sale going on so make sure to check their website for the latest discounts and prices. Tempurpedic offers a 90 night trial on this mattress if you buy it from their website. This means you get to try it out for 90 nights in your house and if you aren’t happy with it, you can contact them to initiate a return. Tempurpedic asks that you try the mattress for at least 30 nights so that your body can adjust before returning. If you purchased the mattress with a free shipping discount, you may have to pay return shipping fees which is $175. While this isn’t as generous as some of the newer online brands, you are purchasing a top of the line mattress from a very reputable brand.

My TEMPUR – breeze hybrid Findings
Most brands now offer a zippable cover but Tempurpedic really pays attention to detail. Even the zipper pulls are high quality. The cover is designed to be ultra-breathable and has a phase change cooling layer to draw heat away. Yes, other brands also have this but this cover is much higher quality and is going to last longer.
I unzipped the cover and cut into the inside to show the layers of foam. Its kind of underwhelming but don’t let that fool you. Many brands will simply color the different layers of foam as a marketing ploy. Tempur is more focused on the quality of foam and if you watch my overview view you can see that the foam has a more consistent look and feel.
There are 3 layers of foam here there’s the top comfort layer, a transition layer and the third layer is actually a foam border that goes around the mattress.
When I peel back the foam border, you can see the pocket coils inside. Less expensive mattresses do not offer a foam border and this usually will mean less edge support. Having a firm foam border means you can maximize your sleeping surface without feeling like you are going to roll off.
I typically sleep on my side unless the mattress gets too firm and my shoulders get sore. That forces me to move towards my stomach, then later, back to my side. With this mattress, I am able to sleep on my side most of the night without switching positions. Often, if your shoulder is getting sore, you should look at getting a thicker pillow to support your neck.
I really like how much this mattress sinks while still offering good support. Most hybrid mattresses will use firmer coils for support but this mattress takes a more balanced approach. The coils aren’t too firm and the foam is firmer than most hybrids but together you still get a medium-firm feel.
My Tempurpedic Breeze Hybrid Recommendation
Tempurpedic is facing a lot of competition online with the emergence of online brands. While they may not be the cheapest mattress, they are still tops in quality and durability. They also have a feel all their own that I still have not experienced being replicated. Die-hard Tempurpedic loyalists will appreciate the upgrades this mattress provides such as its cooling features and the introduction of springs that still make it feel primarily like a foam mattress but with a bit quicker contouring and more sinkage.
I recommend this mattress to existing Tempurpedic customers looking for an upgrade and for anyone who wants the best in quality from a name that started the memory foam craze.

A Short History of Simmons
Simmons Bedding Company, commonly known as Simmons, is an American mattress manufacturer founded in 1870 by Zalmon G. Simmons in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Originally, the company produced wooden insulators for telegraph lines, but Simmons soon discovered a new opportunity in the bedding industry.
In 1925, Simmons introduced the first mass-produced mattress with individually wrapped coil springs, which provided more support and reduced motion transfer between sleepers. This innovation became the foundation of the company’s success and was patented as the Beautyrest mattress.
Over the years, Simmons continued to innovate, introducing new technologies such as the Pillow Top mattress in 1940 and the patented no-flip design in 2000, which eliminated the need to flip the mattress regularly to maintain its shape.
In 2003, Simmons merged with rival bedding company Serta to form Serta Simmons Bedding, LLC, now known as Serta Simmons Holdings, LLC. Today, the company is one of the largest mattress manufacturers in the world, producing a wide range of mattresses under the Simmons, Beautyrest, and other brand names, and selling its products in over 100 countries.
Simmons is one of the oldest and most innovative mattress companies in the United States. In 1925 the developed the pocketed coil system which became part of the new BeautyRest line which is now synonymous with quality. Simmons has been innovating ever since. They brought us the queen and king size mattress to create more room in the bed for couples and ultimately a better sleep. The BeautyRest line has evolved over the years and continues to provide the best in class technology along with over a century of mattress know-how. In this review, we take a look at the new BeautyRest Black Original and how it stacks up to the competition both in stores and online.
History of the BeautyRest
The Beautyrest mattress is one of the most well-known products from Simmons Bedding Company, and its history is closely tied to the development of modern mattress technology.
In 1925, Simmons introduced the Beautyrest mattress, which was the first mass-produced mattress to feature individually wrapped coil springs. This innovation allowed each spring to move independently, providing better support and reducing motion transfer between sleepers. The Beautyrest quickly gained popularity, and Simmons became known for its high-quality, luxurious mattresses.
In the decades that followed, Simmons continued to improve the Beautyrest, introducing new technologies such as the first pillow-top mattress in 1940 and the no-flip mattress in 2000. The no-flip design eliminated the need to flip the mattress regularly to maintain its shape, making it easier to use and maintain.
In recent years, Simmons has continued to innovate with the Beautyrest line, introducing new materials and technologies to enhance the mattress’s comfort, support, and durability. Today, the Beautyrest line includes a wide range of mattresses, from the entry-level Beautyrest Classic to the premium Beautyrest Black.
The Beautyrest mattress has become a household name and is widely regarded as one of the most comfortable and supportive mattresses on the market. Its history is a testament to Simmons’ commitment to innovation and quality, and its popularity shows no signs of waning any time soon.
Overview of the BeautyRest Black
The Beautyrest Black is a premium mattress line from Simmons Bedding Company, known for its luxurious materials and advanced technologies.
The Beautyrest Black was first introduced in 2011, and its development was driven by Simmons’ commitment to creating the most comfortable and supportive mattress possible. The Beautyrest Black features a variety of innovative technologies, including:
- Advanced Pocketed Coil Technology: This technology uses individually wrapped coils that adjust to the body’s shape and provide exceptional support and comfort.
- Micro Diamond Infused Memory Foam: This technology incorporates diamond particles into the memory foam, helping to conduct heat away from the body and providing a cooler, more comfortable sleep experience.
- SurfaceCool Plus Fiber: This technology is designed to regulate temperature and wick away moisture, helping to keep the sleep surface cool and dry.
The Beautyrest Black quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional comfort and luxurious materials, including high-quality fabrics, natural latex, and wool. The line has continued to evolve over the years, with new models and technologies being introduced regularly.
Today, the Beautyrest Black line includes a wide range of models, from the entry-level L-Class to the premium K-Class Ultra Plush Pillow Top. The Beautyrest Black has become a popular choice for those seeking the ultimate in luxury and comfort, and its history reflects Simmons’ commitment to innovation and quality.
Here’s a quick overview of the mattress including a look inside and how it reacts with my bowling ball and lying around on it.
This mattress comes delivered via white glove delivery. The mattress is not roll packed so it is delivered to the room of your choice and set up on your bed ready to go. The advantage of this is there is less off-gassing and obviously you can sleep on it right away. You also don’t need to strain your back getting it upstairs and around corners. White glove delivery is included in the cost of the mattress.
Simmons is taking a page from some of the online brands by offering a 100-night trial. That means you get a 100 nights to sleep on it in your house to decide if it’s really right for you. If not, just head over to their website to initiate the return. Just note that Simmons allows 1 return per year.

The Beautyrest Black line typically includes several models, each with its own set of features and materials. Here are some of the construction details that are commonly found in each model:
- Advanced Pocketed Coil Technology: This technology uses individually wrapped coils that adjust to the body’s shape and provide exceptional support and comfort. The number of coils can vary depending on the model, with higher-end models typically having more coils for better support.

- Cover: The cover of each Beautyrest Black model is typically made from high-quality materials such as silk, wool, and/or cashmere. The cover is designed to be breathable and to help regulate temperature.
Overall, the Beautyrest Black line is known for its high-quality materials and advanced technologies that are designed to provide exceptional comfort and support. The specific construction details of each model can vary depending on the size and features of the mattress, and it’s always a good idea to check with the retailer or manufacturer for specific information on a particular model.
My BeautyRest Black Original Findings
Overall I found this mattress to be on the firmer end of the spectrum. Although BeautyRest lists this as a medium I found it to be more of a medium-firm.
Although it is somewhat firm, it still contours well for side sleeping and if you like to sleep more on top of the mattress, as a side sleeper, this would be a good choice.
Another advantage of this mattress is that you can sleep right up to the edget without feeling like you will roll-off. I think this in part has to do with the foam encased border around the mattress. This is a rigid foam that provides great edge support for sleeping and putting on your shoes!
What stood out most for me was that this mattress can’t easily be classified as just a spring or foam or even a hybrid mattress. The T3 Coil System seems very durable and firm and provides an excellent base for the foam layers above. What you get is a mattress that initially feels firm but still provides good pressure relief. This means you get the support that foam alone just can’t provide. Simmons invented the pocket coil and I think they saved the best for the Beautyrest line.
I recommend this mattress mostly for stomach, back and occasional side sleepers. Because it is firmer, you won’t sink into the mattress as much and won’t experience much heat retention either.
My BeautyRest Black Original Recommendation
A BeautyRest Black is the premier offering from Simmons and you get all of their best technology. I expect this mattress to have a longer lifespan than many of the online offerings on the market and for that reason, I think the cost is justified. The firmer coil system is something I haven’t experienced in most of the online brands either so you are getting superior support. Sleepers looking for a firmer mattress, that doesn’t sleep hot and will support heavier people should take a look at this mattress.
Simmons vs. Sealy is One Better Than the Other?
When comparing the Beautyrest and Posturepedic mattress lines, there are a few key factors to consider, including construction, comfort and support, price, and brand reputation.
Construction: The Beautyrest Black typically features individually wrapped pocketed coil technology and a variety of comfort layers, such as memory foam, gel foam, and natural latex foam. The Sealy Posturepedic mattresses typically feature a combination of innerspring coils and foam layers, with varying levels of support and firmness depending on the model.
The Beautyrest Black’s individually wrapped pocketed coil technology provides exceptional support and helps to reduce motion transfer between sleep partners. The variety of comfort layers allows for customized comfort and support. The Posturepedic’s innerspring coil technology provides solid support, but the foam layers can vary in quality depending on the model.
Comfort and Support: The Beautyrest Black is known for its exceptional comfort and support, thanks to the advanced pocketed coil technology and high-quality comfort layers. The Sealy Posturepedic also offers good support, but the level of comfort can vary depending on the model.
The Beautyrest Black’s comfort layers are designed to provide a range of firmness and cushioning options, from plush to ultra-firm. The Posturepedic models also offer a range of firmness levels, but some models can be less comfortable than others, depending on the quality of the foam layers.
Price: The Beautyrest Black is a premium mattress line and typically has a higher price point than the Sealy Posturepedic, which offers a range of models at varying price points.
The Beautyrest Black’s premium construction and high-quality materials come at a cost, with prices ranging from around $1,799 for a Twin size to $7,799 for a King size. The Sealy Posturepedic models range in price from around $399 for a Twin size to $1,699 for a King size, making them a more affordable option for some consumers.
Brand Reputation: Both Beautyrest and Sealy are well-known and respected mattress brands with a long history of producing high-quality mattresses. However, some consumers may have a preference for one brand over the other based on personal experience or brand reputation.
Beautyrest has been in business for over 150 years and is known for its innovative technologies and high-end products. Sealy, on the other hand, has been in business for over 130 years and is known for its reliable, well-made mattresses. Both brands have a loyal following and a reputation for producing high-quality mattresses.
Overall, the choice between Beautyrest and Sealy Posturepedic will depend on individual preferences for comfort, support, and price. It’s a good idea to test out both mattress lines in person, if possible, to get a sense of which one feels best for your specific needs and preferences.

The Serta iComfort Blue 100 Gentle Firm is true to its name. It has an initial soft feel but you will soon be supported by the firm base layer which prevents you from sinking in all that much. What I like about this mattress is that it is a great choice for people looking for a foam mattress with good support. It’s also available to try out in stores so you will know exactly how it feels and is priced competitively. This mattress comes with a 120 trial where you can return it within that time for a refund if not happy.

My Serta iComfort Findings
This mattress is certainly a firm mattress but the top layer is nice and soft. You will sink just a little into this mattress before you are supported by the base layer underneath. Here’s a picture illustrating sinkage on the mattress.
Here’s another photo illustrating sinkage from the top of the mattress.
Here’s a video showing how much motion transfer you can expect on the mattress. You really don’t get any and you will also notice that the ball doesn’t bounce that much because you will hit the firmer base layer to absorb the energy.
This video shows you the inside of the mattress and how each layer works. You’ll notice that the top layer provides really good pressure relief but you won’t sink into this mattress that much which is good for people seeking a firmer feel.
My Serta iComfort Recommendation
What sets this mattress apart from the competition is that Serta has been able to create a mattress with a soft top layer and firm base layer to create a unique feel. With most firm mattresses you get very little contouring. Here you quickly sink into the mattress about an inch then are instantly supported by the base layer. This mattress could be used by side sleepers but I think back and especially stomach sleepers will appreciate the support in the lower back.
Since there are no springs, you won’t be dealing with any motion transfer issues and although it is all foam and will sleep a little warm, you won’t sink in as much as a softer mattress so that shouldn’t be as big of an issue. I also think this would make a great mattress for heavier people who need the support a traditional mattress may not provide.

The BeautyRest Black Calista Extra Firm is a great mattress for people looking for optimal support. Although it is certainly a firm mattress, there is enough cushioning on the top layers to provide adequate pressure relief. This mattress is sold in traditional retail stores and online. Unlike many of the mattresses I review on Yawnder, this one does not come in a box. It comes through standard freight delivery.
Overview of the BeautyRest Black Calista
The Mattress will be delivered into your bedroom by the delivery company. Since it does not come roll packed it has been given time to breathe so there is really no smell with this mattress which is a big plus for people sensitive to the new mattress smell.

My BeautyRest Black Findings
I should point out that this mattress just looks great. The detail in the stitching is beautiful and the logo really pops.
This mattress also has handles stitched on the side which makes it really easy to rotate. If you and your partner are considerably different in size, it’s a good idea to rotate the mattress so it wears evenly.
As you can see from the picture below, my 14 lb. bowling ball doesn’t sink all that much.
In this video I illustrate how it handles motion. although it does have a pocket coil system, because the mattress is so firm, there is very little movement.
I cut into the back side of the mattress to show you each layer. Here’s what it looks like inside. The cover is stitched as opposed to a zipper cover. This made it harder to get into with scissors which is why it doesn’t look so pretty.
Here’s a video showing how each layer reacts. You can’t see the springs in this video because they are behind the perimeter foam.
Finally, I dug into the mattress so that I can show you the pocket coil system.
My BeautyRest Black Calista Recommendation
True to its name, this is a firm mattress. You won’t sink much into this mattress which makes it optimal for stomach sleepers or anyone who likes a firm mattress. I also think it would be a great choice for heavy sleepers as it will give you proper support where you need it and the spring system will work to sink a bit more.
I really like how the Calista is layered. Although it is firm, it didn’t feel hard. You can lay on this mattress for a long time without feeling uncomfortable.

Overview of the Tempurpedic Cloud Elite
Contruction of the Tempurpedic Cloud Elite
Below is a cross section picture of the inside of the mattress. As you can see there are 4 foam layers. Many of the all foam mattresses online are 3 layers of foam. I think what you get from this mattress is a much more suble transition.
Below are the construction details of the mattress according to the Tempurpedic website.
Tempurpedic Findings
Here’s how much the mattress sinks when placing my 14 lb. bowlingi ball on it. The knit cover is soft and think compared to other mattress ticking I have tested. There’s no need for a mattress pad here, in fact I would discourage you from using a mattress pad as this mattress is plenty soft without it.
In terms of softness below are the test from our proprietary firmness testing machine:
Below is a video illustrating how each layer of the mattress reacts: You’ll see that the top two layers are the conforming foam and that the very top layer is the slowest to recover and also the softest.
The video below illustrates motion transfer on the Tempurpedic. True to its reputation, there’s basically no motion transfer here.
Below are the more scientific findings from my engineering team regarding motion transfer
The following video illustrates heat retention on the mattress. I thought that this mattress would retain more heat but I think that the Smart Climate System, seen below, help dissipate heat below the cover.
Part of what help dissipate heat is the smart climate cover. When you unzip the top cover you will find this below which is a mateiral that is cool to the touch.
The cover itself is removeable and washable. I advise a mattress protector though if you tend to eat or drink in bed. I really like how easy it is to unzip the cover. Here’s a picture of the zipper system.
My Tempurpedic Cloud Elite Recommendation
If you crave a soft and cozy mattress that has excellent contouring, the Tempur Cloud Elite is an excellent choice. Although there are literally thousands of memory foam mattresses online, there are very few mattresses that come close to the feel of a Tempurpedic. This mattress is definitely on the pricier side however, having been around for 25 years they have garnered trust in the industry and among consumers. It’s not uncommon for Tempurpedic customers to be happy witht their mattress well beyond the 7 year lifespan of a typical mattress.

The Simmons Beautyrest Recharge is a very popular mattress that has been getting lots of attention. I put this mattress to the test and found it to be rather unimpressive when compared to the quality you get online.
Ordering the BeautyRest Recharge
I ordered this mattress through Mattress Firm. You can try out this model in their stores or just order online or via a phone call. I decided to order via the phone. Instead of trying out in a store I wanted to test it out in my own house similar to the other online mattresses I have tested. The process was very easy and delivery was extremely fast. I ordered on a Tuesday and has a scheduled 3 hour delivery window for Thursday. This mattress does not come in a box so a freight delivery needs to be scheduled.
A nice touch was a coupon for 15% off at Olejo.com and a mint. Olejo.com sells mattress and other bedding accessories.
Construction
Here are the specifications of the Simmons BeautyRest Recharge mattress. The specific model I purchased was the Recharge Signature Select Hartfield 11.5″ Luxury Firm Mattress.
Trial Period
Mattress Firm offers a 100 day trial period through their “Happiness Guarantee”.
Below is a video illustrating the motion transfer and bounce of a Simmons Beautyrest Recharge mattress.
As you can see it still has some good bounce for a firm mattress but doesn’t sink in as much as a
What really concerned me was tufting on the mattress. As you can see the buttons are just for show and aren’t sewn into the mattress although this is true for many foam mattresses I have reviewed as well.
Here’s a video of the tufting of the Beautyrest Recharge
My BeautyRest Recharge Recommendation
This mattress just didn’t do it for me. It is a bit too firm for my taste. The top layer looks nice but nothing special. I don’t like the fact that if I want to return it I need to pay a $149 fee. With all the other companies I have reviewed so far you get a full cash refund and aren’t stuck choosing a different mattress in stock. At $649 for a Queen, this is the entry level for the recharge line so I imagine the more expensive models have more features.
