I was given a free Malouf mattress protector for review. The Malouf Encase mattress protector is the ultimate solution for mattress protection. With this mattress protector you get 6 sided protection. The protector covers your entire mattress so that nothing gets in.
I was given one of these by Malouf and switched out my old waterproof mattress pad. Since I am starting to travel more regularly and stay in hotel rooms, I didn’t want to risk introducing bed bugs into my house. That would destroy all my research! In addition to a mattress protector, Malouf also sells a box spring protector but I use the Reverie adjustable bed so no need for that.
Ordering
I recommend using Amazon to purchase Malouf products. You can purchase direct from their site but I find Amazon to be much easier. You also get the Amazon 30 day money back guarantee so you can return it within that time frame if you’re not satisfied.
Unboxing
Below is an unboxing/overview video of the Malouf mattress protector. As you can see it is not all that thick so it won’t feel obtrusive when you sleep on it.
Findings
This is a very quiet mattress protector. I can’t feel it crinkling at all underneath my sheets. Right now I have it on the Purple mattress which has amazing breath ability and I haven’t noticed a change when I put the mattress protector over it.
I am a big fan of the Tencel fiber which is used for breathability. Tencel fibers claim to be softer than silk, more absorbent than cotton and cooler than linen. Tencel is made from wood pulp and is a newer fiber on the marketplace. You can even buy Tencel sheets.
A queen size protector sell for $111.99 on Amazon. In my opinion it is a solid investment. You can find cheaper alternatives at Target and Walmart but they don’t incorporate Tencel and I didn’t find them to be nearly as breathable as this one. Many people buy a protector AFTER a bed bug infestation which by then is too late. It’s best to buy a quality protector right when you get your mattress to keep it free of both bed bugs and allergens.
Mattress sales people may tell you that you need to use a protector or you will void the warranty which is not true. Most warranties I have seen warrant against indentations of a certain size.
When using any water proof mattress protector or pad, be sure to follow the instructions. The water proof membranes used in this protector and other such as Protect-A-Bed are sensitive to high heat. I launder mine with a non scented soap such as Charlie’s and then tumble dry on low heat with other clothes. I have found that if you dry these protectors and pads without other clothes or towels, they will lump into a ball and water will get trapped in them. Adding clothes dramatically shortens the drying time.
Mattress pads and protectors aren’t that showy of a bedroom accessory but they are the workhorse that will keep your mattress fresh and clean for years to come. Investing in a quality one will let the mattress work the way it was intended. Less quality products won’t breath as much and make you feel like you’re sleeping on a garbage bag.
Conclusion
Malouf continues to deliver quality with their line of mattress protectors and pads. Their incorporation of Tencel fiber greatly enhances breath ability. Consider pairing this protector with a set of Malouf WOVEN Tencel sheets.
