Tempur-Pedic Sleep Mask

Tempur-Pedic Sleep Mask

The Tempur-Pedic Sleep Mask is a popular sleep mask made with the same TEMPUR material found in their mattresses. It’s designed to be comfortable and effective at blocking out light, so you can get a good night’s sleep anywhere.

Here are some of the key features of the Tempur-Pedic Sleep Mask:

    • Made with TEMPUR material: This material is known for its conforming properties, which means it molds to your face for a custom fit. This helps to create a light-blocking seal around your eyes, without putting any pressure on them.
    • Adjustable strap: The mask has an adjustable strap with a Velcro closure, so you can find the perfect fit for your head.
    • Compact and lightweight: The mask is small and lightweight, making it easy to travel with.
    • Cool to the touch: The TEMPUR material is designed to stay cool to the touch, even on hot nights.

Here are some of the pros and cons of the Tempur-Pedic Sleep Mask, as reported by users:

Pros:

    • Very comfortable and effective at blocking out light
    • Stays cool to the touch
    • Adjustable strap ensures a good fit
    • Comes in a variety of colors

Cons:

    • Can be a bit expensive
    • Some people find it too heavy
    • Not washable

Overall, the Tempur-Pedic Sleep Mask is a well-reviewed product that can be a good option for people who are looking for a comfortable and effective sleep mask. However, it’s important to consider the price and potential weight before making a purchase.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

    • The Tempur-Pedic Sleep Mask is available in one size, but it is designed to fit most head sizes.
    • The mask is not machine washable, but it can be spot cleaned with a damp cloth.

Tempur Pedic Sleep Mask Complaints

While the Tempur-Pedic Sleep Mask boasts many positive reviews, it’s not without its downsides. Here are some common complaints users have mentioned:

Comfort:

    • Bulkiness and weight: Some users find the mask too thick and heavy, causing discomfort on the face and pressure points on the head, especially when sleeping on their back. The velcro closure can also be bulky and irritating.
    • Facial pressure: The conforming nature of the TEMPUR material can feel too heavy or constricting for some, causing pressure on the eyes, cheekbones, and nasal bridge.
    • Roughness: Some users find the inner fabric rough against their skin, especially under the eyes.

Fit:

    • One-size-fits-all: While designed for most head sizes, the single size doesn’t guarantee a perfect fit for everyone. It can be too loose for some and too tight for others, leading to light leakage and discomfort.
    • Side sleepers: The mask might not mold perfectly to the face when sleeping on the side, allowing light leakage and potentially displacing the mask.

Other issues:

    • Heat: The thick material can trap heat and feel uncomfortable in hot weather.
    • Durability: Some users report issues with the velcro straps losing their adhesiveness or the fabric showing wear and tear over time.
    • Price: The Tempur-Pedic Sleep Mask is more expensive than many other sleep masks on the market, which can be a deterrent for some users.

Here are some additional things to consider:

    • User experiences can vary greatly, so not every complaint will apply to everyone.
    • Reading reviews from users with similar facial features or sleeping positions can be helpful in determining if the mask might be a good fit for you.
  • Tempur-Pedic offers a one-year warranty on the mask, so you can always try it out and return it if you’re not satisfied.

    • Fitness equipment: He’s a huge fan of kettlebells and recommends them for strength training. He also frequently mentions the Whoop Strap, a fitness and recovery tracker.
    • Nutrition: He often talks about the benefits of elk meat as a healthy protein source, and advocates for consuming wild game in general. He’s also discussed experimenting with ketone supplements.

To be honest, there aren’t many specific mattress brands that Joe Rogan explicitly recommends on his show. He focuses more on general sleep hygiene tips and the importance of quality sleep for overall health and well-being.

However, there have been a couple of instances where he’s mentioned mattresses in passing:

    • Purple Mattress: In a 2019 episode with comedian Tom Segura, Rogan briefly mentioned that he’s slept on a Purple Mattress and found it to be comfortable.
    • Saatva Mattress: In a 2021 episode with comedian Andrew Schulz, Rogan mentioned that he’s familiar with Saatva Mattresses and acknowledged their popularity.

It’s important to remember that these are just brief mentions and shouldn’t be taken as an endorsement of either brand.

Ultimately, the best way to find a mattress that’s right for you is to do your own research and try out a few different options. Consider factors like your budget, sleeping style, and any specific needs you may have. You can also read online reviews and compare prices before making a decision.

Here are some additional tips for choosing a mattress:

    • Spend some time trying out different mattresses in person. This will give you a chance to feel how they feel and see if they’re comfortable for you.
    • Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The salesperson at the mattress store should be able to help you find a mattress that’s right for you.
    • Consider your budget. Mattresses can range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Decide how much you’re willing to spend before you start shopping.
    • Read online reviews. This can give you a good idea of what other people think of different mattresses.
  • Compare prices. Once you’ve found a few mattresses that you like, compare prices before you make a decision.
Saatva Classic

Besides mattresses, Joe Rogan has mentioned various sleep products on his show, The Joe Rogan Experience. Here are some notable ones:

Temperature Regulation:

    • Eight Sleep: This smart mattress uses similar technology to the ChiliPad, offering temperature control and other features like sleep tracking and personalized sleep programs. Rogan has interviewed Eight Sleep co-founder Matteo Franceschetti and endorsed their products.

Light Blocking:

    • Blackout curtains: Blocking out light as much as possible is crucial for quality sleep. Rogan has emphasized the importance of blackout curtains for creating a dark sleep environment.
    • Sleep masks: Rogan has also mentioned using sleep masks to block out light and promote relaxation for sleep.

Relaxation and Sleep Aids:

    • Magnesium: This mineral plays a vital role in relaxation and sleep. Rogan often recommends magnesium supplements, particularly magnesium glycinate, as part of his “sleep cocktail” for promoting better sleep.
    • Weighted blankets: These blankets apply gentle pressure, simulating a hug, which can be calming and promote relaxation for sleep. Rogan has mentioned using and recommending weighted blankets on the show.
    • White noise machines: These machines produce ambient sounds that can mask background noise and help you fall asleep and stay asleep. Rogan has discussed using white noise machines and their effectiveness in creating a peaceful sleep environment.
    • Biohacking devices: Rogan has interviewed guests like Andrew Huberman, who discussed biohacking techniques for sleep improvement, including using red light therapy glasses and light therapy lamps to regulate circadian rhythms.

Remember, these are just some examples, and Rogan’s recommendations may evolve over time. It’s always best to do your own research and consult with a healthcare professional before trying any new sleep products or practices.

Sleep Routines Mentioned on the Joe Rogan Show

The Joe Rogan Experience has explored various sleep routines and techniques throughout its episodes. Here are some notable ones:

General Tips:

    • Optimize your sleep environment: This includes maintaining a cool, dark, and quiet bedroom, minimizing screens before bed, and having a regular sleep schedule.
    • Prioritize sunlight exposure: Get a good dose of natural sunlight in the morning to regulate your circadian rhythm.
    • Implement a wind-down routine: Allow for gradual relaxation before bed, through activities like reading, taking a warm bath, or light stretching.
    • Avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime: These substances can disrupt sleep patterns.
    • Engage in regular exercise: Physical activity can improve sleep quality, but avoid strenuous workouts too close to bedtime.
    • Experiment with relaxation techniques: Meditation, deep breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation can help quiet the mind and promote sleep.

Specific Routines:

    • The Huberman Protocol: Dr. Andrew Huberman recommends a routine involving cold exposure, breathwork, and light therapy to optimize sleep and mood.
    • The “Sleep Cocktail”: Rogan and guests often mention a pre-bed cocktail of magnesium, L-theanine, and other nutrients to promote relaxation and sleep.
    • Wim Hof Method: This combination of cold exposure, breathing exercises, and mindfulness techniques can improve sleep quality and overall well-being.
    • Digital Detox: Disconnecting from electronic devices for a period before bed can minimize screen time’s negative impact on sleep.
    • Early to Bed, Early to Rise: Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends, can help regulate your circadian rhythm and improve overall sleep quality.

Remember:

    • These are just examples, and the best sleep routine is the one that works for you.
    • Consistency is key, so try your chosen routine for several weeks to see how it affects your sleep.
  • Consult a healthcare professional if you experience persistent sleep problems.

If you are looking for a luxury mattress that will provide you with exceptional comfort, support, and cooling, the Beautyrest Black Calista series is a great option to consider.

The BeautyRest Black Calista Extra Firm is a great mattress for people looking for optimal support. Although it is certainly a firm mattress, there is enough cushioning on the top layers to provide adequate pressure relief. This mattress is sold in traditional retail stores and online. Unlike many of the mattresses I review on Yawnder, this one does not come in a box. It comes through standard freight delivery.

Overview of the BeautyRest Black Calista

The Mattress will be delivered into your bedroom by the delivery company. Since it does not come roll packed it has been given time to breathe so there is really no smell with this mattress which is a big plus for people sensitive to the new mattress smell.

Here’s what it looks like in the plastic packaging.

My BeautyRest Black Findings

I should point out that this mattress just looks great. The detail in the stitching is beautiful and the logo really pops.

beautyrest black

This mattress also has handles stitched on the side which makes it really easy to rotate. If you and your partner are considerably different in size, it’s a good idea to rotate the mattress so it wears evenly.

BeautyRest Black Handle

As you can see from the picture below, my 14 lb. bowling ball doesn’t sink all that much.

beautyres Black Firmness

In this video I illustrate how it handles motion. although it does have a pocket coil system, because the mattress is so firm, there is very little movement.

I cut into the back side of the mattress to show you each layer. Here’s what it looks like inside. The cover is stitched as opposed to a zipper cover. This made it harder to get into with scissors which is why it doesn’t look so pretty.

Inside Beautyrest Black

Here’s a video showing how each layer reacts. You can’t see the springs in this video because they are behind the perimeter foam.

Finally, I dug into the mattress so that I can show you the pocket coil system.

beautyrest black springsMy BeautyRest Black Calista Recommendation

True to its name, this is a firm mattress. You won’t sink much into this mattress which makes it optimal for stomach sleepers or anyone who likes a firm mattress. I also think it would be a great choice for heavy sleepers as it will give you proper support where you need it and the spring system will work to sink a bit more.

I really like how the Calista is layered. Although it is firm, it didn’t feel hard. You can lay on this mattress for a long time without feeling uncomfortable.

Why is Room and Board So Expensive?

Room & Board furniture is expensive for a number of reasons:

  • High-quality materials: Room & Board uses high-quality materials in its furniture, such as solid wood, high-density foam, and high-end fabrics. These materials are more expensive than the materials used in lower-quality furniture.
  • American-made: Room & Board furniture is made in the United States, which means that it is subject to higher labor costs.
  • Sustainable practices: Room & Board is committed to sustainable practices, which means that it uses recycled materials and renewable resources in its furniture. This also adds to the cost of production.

  • Brand recognition: Room & Board is a well-known and respected brand, which means that consumers are willing to pay a premium for its furniture.

It is important to note that Room & Board furniture is also backed by a generous warranty, which further adds to the cost of ownership.

What size sofa for a 12×12 room?

For a 12×12 room, you will want to choose a sofa that is under 80 inches in length. This will help to prevent the sofa from overwhelming the space. You may also want to consider a sofa with a chaise, as this can provide additional seating and storage space.

Here are some specific sofa sizes that would be appropriate for a 12×12 room:

  • 60-70 inches long
  • 30-35 inches deep
  • 30-35 inches high

Is a sofa better than a sectional for a small living room?

Whether a sofa or a sectional is better for a small living room depends on your individual needs and preferences.

Sofas are typically more compact than sectionals, so they can be a good option for small spaces. However, sectionals can provide more seating and storage space, which can be beneficial for families or people who entertain frequently.

If you are looking for a sofa for a small living room, I recommend choosing a sofa with a chaise. This will provide additional seating and storage space, without taking up too much room.

Are sectionals still in style?

Sectionals are still very much in style. They are a versatile piece of furniture that can be used in a variety of living room settings. Sectionals can also be configured in a variety of ways, to create the perfect layout for your space.

Why are sectionals more expensive?

Sectionals are more expensive than sofas for a few reasons:

  • Sectionals are typically made with more materials, such as wood, fabric, and foam.
  • Sectionals require more labor to assemble and finish.
  • Sectionals are often more difficult to ship and deliver.
  • Sectionals are often made by high-end furniture manufacturers, which means that they use higher-quality materials and construction methods.

Despite being more expensive, sectionals can be a good investment for people who want a versatile and stylish piece of furniture for their living room.

How Long Will the Metro Sectional Last?

The Room & Board Metro sectional is made with high-quality materials and construction methods, so it is expected to last for many years with proper care. Room & Board offers a 10-year warranty on the Metro sectional, which covers defects in materials and workmanship.

However, the exact lifespan of the Metro sectional will depend on a number of factors, including:

  • How often the sectional is used: The more the sectional is used, the more wear and tear it will experience.
  • How well the sectional is cared for: Regular cleaning and maintenance can help to prolong the life of the sectional.
  • The environment in which the sectional is used: If the sectional is exposed to direct sunlight or moisture, it may deteriorate more quickly.

If the Metro sectional is properly cared for, it should last for at least 10-15 years. However, it is possible for the sectional to last for even longer with proper care.

Here are some tips for prolonging the life of your Metro sectional:

  • Vacuum the sectional regularly to remove dust and dirt.
  • Spot clean any spills or stains immediately.
  • Avoid exposing the sectional to direct sunlight or moisture.
  • Use a furniture polish to protect the fabric and wood.
  • Have the sectional professionally cleaned every few years.

By following these tips, you can help to ensure that your Metro sectional lasts for many years to come.

Overall, the Gino fabric is a durable and high-quality fabric that is perfect for use on the Metro sectional.

It is important to note that no fabric is completely immune to wear and tear. However, the Gino fabric is more durable than most other fabrics, and it is unlikely to show signs of wear for many years with proper care.

Room and Board vs. Arhaus

Both Room & Board and Arhaus make high-quality sectionals. However, there are some key differences between the two companies’ products.

Room & Board sectionals are known for their clean lines, modern design, and durability. They are also relatively affordable, especially compared to Arhaus sectionals.

Arhaus sectionals are known for their luxurious materials, intricate details, and classic design. They are also backed by a generous warranty. However, Arhaus sectionals are more expensive than Room & Board sectionals.

Here is a more detailed comparison of the two companies’ sectionals:

CharacteristicRoom & BoardArhaus

Ultimately, the best company for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you are looking for a high-quality sectional that is both affordable and durable, Room & Board is a good option. If you are looking for a luxurious sectional with a classic design, Arhaus is a good option.

Here are some specific examples of sectionals from each company:

  • Room & Board Metro sectional: A modern sectional with clean lines and a variety of fabric and finish options.
  • Arhaus Ellington sectional: A luxurious sectional with intricate details and a classic Chesterfield design.

Homebody vs. Room & Board

Both the Homebody Couch and the Room & Board Metro Sectional are popular choices for living room furniture, but they cater to different needs and styles. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide which one might be right for you:

Homebody Couch:

  • Style: Casual and cozy, with a focus on comfort and relaxation. Think cloud-like cushions, deep seating, and plenty of throw pillows.
    Image of Homebody Couch
  • Comfort: Top priority! Homebody couches are known for their sink-in softness and plush cushions. They’re perfect for movie nights, cuddling up with a good book, or taking a nap.
  • Durability: While comfortable, Homebody couches may not be the most durable option, especially for families with pets or children. The down filling can flatten over time, and the fabrics may be more prone to stains.
  • Price: Homebody couches are generally more affordable than the Room & Board Metro Sectional. Prices start around $2,000 for a basic sofa, and go up depending on the size and customizations.
  • Customization: Homebody offers a wide range of customization options, including different cushion sizes, arm styles, and fabrics. You can also choose from a variety of leg options and add-ons like cup holders and charging stations.

Room & Board Metro Sectional:

  • Style: Modern and versatile, with clean lines and a timeless look. The Metro Sectional can be dressed up or down to suit your style.
Image of Room & Board Metro Sectional

  • Comfort: Comfortable, but not as sink-in soft as the Homebody Couch. The Metro Sectional has a firmer seat and back cushions, which some people may find more supportive.
  • Durability: Built to last! The Metro Sectional is made with high-quality materials and construction, making it a good choice for families with pets or children. The fabrics are also stain-resistant and easy to clean.
  • Price: The Metro Sectional is more expensive than the Homebody Couch, with prices starting around $3,500 for a basic configuration. The price will go up depending on the size, customizations, and fabric choices.
  • Customization: The Metro Sectional offers some customization options, such as choosing the number of pieces, arm styles, and fabric. However, the options are not as extensive as Homebody.

Arhaus Furniture: A Historical Overview

The Beginnings

Arhaus Furniture, founded in 1986, is a brainchild of John Reed and his father, Jack Reed. The duo, fueled by a vision of offering high-quality, unique home furnishings, embarked on a journey that led them to the creation of a brand that’s now synonymous with luxury and sustainable design.

Situated in the picturesque town of Boston Heights, Ohio, Arhaus Furniture had its humble beginnings. John Reed’s travels around the world exposed him to varied cultures, architecture, and artistry, which then became the cornerstone for Arhaus’s signature eclectic mix of designs.

A Distinct Ethos

From its inception, Arhaus Furniture set itself apart with its commitment to not use wood from the world’s endangered rainforests. Instead, they sourced reclaimed wood from dilapidated buildings, railroad tracks, and old barns. This commitment to environmental sustainability did more than just reduce their carbon footprint; it gave each piece a story, a history, and a unique identity.

Expansion and Growth

Over the years, Arhaus rapidly expanded its footprint. From a single store in Ohio, it blossomed to over 70 locations spread across the United States. As it grew, Arhaus stayed true to its artisanal roots. The brand has consistently partnered with skilled artisans from around the world, ensuring the integrity and uniqueness of each piece they sell.

This global perspective brought a vast array of designs and styles to the American market. From the sleek lines of Italian leather sofas to hand-crafted antiques from India, the Arhaus catalog became a testament to global craftsmanship.

Innovation and Adaptation

In the 21st century, Arhaus recognized the importance of digital transformation. Enhancing its online presence, the brand started offering virtual tools, 3D room planning, and online consultations, ensuring that customers could experience the Arhaus magic even from the comfort of their homes.

Furthermore, understanding the evolving consumer consciousness, Arhaus further deepened its commitment to sustainability. The company embraced materials like organic cotton, recycled metals, and sustainably sourced hardwoods, cementing its position as a brand with a conscience.

Legacy and Impact

For many, Arhaus Furniture is more than just a store. It’s a testament to global artistry, a commitment to sustainability, and a beacon of luxury design. Over the decades, Arhaus has crafted not just furniture, but a legacy that embodies values, quality, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Today, as consumers become increasingly aware and discerning, Arhaus Furniture stands tall, embodying a blend of sustainability, luxury, and a global outlook. Its journey from a small Ohio store to a national brand narrates a story of vision, commitment, and adaptability.

  • Material: High-performance fabrics and leathers tend to be more durable, but they also require specific care to maintain their appearance.

Hurricane Hilary

Using Your Bed for Protection During Hurricane Hilary: A Step-by-Step Guide

As Hurricane Hilary approaches Southern California, with an expected landfall on August 20, 2023, residents are urged to prepare for the impending storm. With winds exceeding 100 miles per hour and the potential for torrential rainfall, it’s essential to have a plan in place to stay safe. One often-overlooked option is using your bed as a protective barrier. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Choose a Safe Room: Identify a room in your home that is least exposed to the storm. This should be an interior room with no windows, such as a bathroom, closet, or hallway. Avoid rooms with large windows or glass doors, as they can shatter during the storm.

  2. Prepare the Room: Remove any loose items, such as picture frames or vases, which could become projectiles during the hurricane. Secure heavy furniture to the walls, if possible, to prevent it from tipping over.

  3. Move Your Bed: If the room you’ve chosen is large enough, move your bed into the room. If not, you can use your mattresses or box springs. Position your bed, mattress, or box spring against the walls, creating a fort-like structure. This will provide a protective barrier against flying debris and possible structural damage during the hurricane.

  4. Gather Supplies: Inside your designated safe room, store a supply of water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio. Keep these essentials in a sturdy container, so you can quickly access them during the storm.

  5. Stay Updated: Tune into local news and weather stations for the latest updates on Hurricane Hilary’s path and strength. Follow the instructions of local authorities, and be ready to evacuate if necessary.

  6. Seek Shelter: When the storm hits, take cover in your designated safe room behind your makeshift bed barrier. Stay there until the storm has passed and it’s safe to emerge. Hurricanes can last several hours, so be prepared to stay in your shelter for an extended period.

  7. Remain Calm: Hurricanes can be frightening, but it’s important to stay calm. Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio nearby to stay updated on the storm’s progress and any emergency announcements.

  8. Assess Damage: After the hurricane has passed and it’s safe to leave your shelter, carefully inspect your home for damage. Look for signs of structural damage, gas leaks, or water leaks. If you suspect any gas leaks, turn off the main gas valve and contact emergency services immediately.

  9. Document Damage: Take photos and videos of any damage to your property. This documentation will be essential for insurance claims.

  10. Follow Local Instructions: In the aftermath of Hurricane Hilary, adhere to any directives from local authorities regarding re-entry into evacuated areas, debris removal, and safety precautions.

Remember, your bed, mattresses, or heavy blankets can provide a protective barrier during a hurricane, but they are not a substitute for proper hurricane preparedness. Always have a comprehensive emergency plan in place, including a designated safe room and essential supplies. Stay informed, follow local guidelines, and prioritize your safety and the safety of your loved ones during Hurricane Hilary and any future storms.

Surviving Hurricane Hilary: Strategies for Sleeping Safely Without Power

As Hurricane Hilary continues its advance toward Southern California, residents should be prepared for the likelihood of power outages. Navigating these situations can be daunting, especially when trying to get some sleep amid the chaos. Here, we offer some strategies for ensuring a restful night’s sleep during power outages caused by Hurricane Hilary.

  1. Create a Safe Space: Before attempting to sleep, ensure that you have a secure place to rest. Choose a room with no windows or the smallest windows possible, such as an interior room, hallway, or bathroom. These areas are less likely to be impacted by flying debris and will offer a quieter environment for sleep.

  2. Use Portable Lighting: As the power may be out, have a flashlight or battery-operated lantern ready for use. Avoid using candles, as they can pose a fire hazard. Keep your lighting source within arm’s reach in case you need it during the night.

  3. Stay Cool: With the power out, your home’s air conditioning will not be functional. To keep cool, wear lightweight, breathable clothing and use battery-operated fans if available. If your home becomes too hot, dampen a washcloth with cool water and place it on your forehead or the back of your neck to help lower your body temperature.

  4. Avoid Overexertion: During a hurricane, it is essential to conserve energy. Overexertion can lead to excessive sweating and dehydration, making it harder to fall asleep. Instead, focus on staying calm and relaxed.

  5. Limit Noise Disruptions: Hurricanes can be noisy, with loud winds, rain, and thunder. To help drown out the noise, consider using earplugs or noise-canceling headphones. These can help create a more serene environment for sleep.

  6. Minimize Light Exposure: If the storm occurs during the day, cover windows with blankets or towels to block out light and create a darker environment conducive to sleep.

  7. Stay Informed: Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio nearby to monitor the progress of Hurricane Hilary and any updates from local authorities. Set the volume low enough to hear important announcements but not so loud that it disrupts your sleep.

  8. Create Comfort: Make your sleeping area as comfortable as possible. Use pillows, blankets, or even your bed’s mattress to create a cozy environment. Consider bringing your favorite comfort items, like a book or stuffed animal, to help you relax.

  9. Practice Relaxation Techniques: To ease your mind and prepare for sleep, practice deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation. These techniques can help reduce stress and promote restful sleep.

  10. Prioritize Safety: While getting adequate sleep is essential, your safety should always be your top priority. If the hurricane’s intensity increases or your home becomes unsafe, be prepared to move to a safer location, even if it means sacrificing some sleep.

The arrival of Hurricane Hilary in Southern California requires residents to take safety precautions seriously. Following these guidelines can help you achieve a better night’s sleep during power outages caused by the storm. Remember, staying informed, calm, and safe are of the utmost importance during any hurricane event.

Finding Solace in the Bedroom: Activities to Pass Time During Power Outages in Hurricane Hilary

As Hurricane Hilary bears down on Southern California, it is vital for residents to stay indoors, preferably in a safe room like the bedroom, where they can ride out the storm and stay away from potential hazards. Power outages are likely during the storm, but there are still plenty of activities to pass the time and stay entertained in your bedroom. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Read a Book: If there’s enough natural light or you have a battery-powered lantern, take the opportunity to immerse yourself in a good book. Whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, reading can provide an escape from the chaos of the hurricane.

  2. Write in a Journal: Document your experiences during the hurricane. Writing about your thoughts and feelings can be a therapeutic way to cope with the stress of the situation. You might also consider writing letters to friends and family members, even if you can’t send them right away.

  3. Listen to Battery-Powered Radio: Tune into local news and weather updates to stay informed about the storm’s progress and any emergency instructions. Some radios also come equipped with built-in speakers, allowing you to listen to music or other radio programs.

Staying entertained without power during Hurricane Hilary may seem challenging, but with a little creativity and resourcefulness, you can find plenty of activities to pass the time and reduce stress. Remember to stay informed about the hurricane’s status, follow local authorities’ recommendations, and prioritize your safety throughout the storm.

Southern California, located along the western coast of the United States, typically experiences relatively mild weather compared to other regions. It is generally sheltered from the full force of hurricanes and tropical cyclones due to cooler ocean temperatures and prevailing wind patterns. However, there have been some exceptions. Here, we detail some of the most devastating tropical systems that have impacted Southern California:

  1. Hurricane Kathleen (1976): Kathleen remains one of the most significant hurricanes to hit Southern California. The storm brought strong winds and heavy rainfall, causing severe flooding. The hurricane claimed six lives, destroyed hundreds of homes, and resulted in over $160 million in damages.

  2. Tropical Storm Nora (1997): Although it had weakened from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm by the time it made landfall in Southern California, Nora still caused considerable damage. The storm’s remnants brought heavy rainfall to the region, resulting in flooding, landslides, and significant property damage. Overall, Nora caused three fatalities and over $100 million in damages.

  3. Tropical Storm Lidia (1981): Lidia’s remnants brought heavy rainfall to Southern California, causing flash flooding and mudslides. The storm caused three fatalities and millions of dollars in damages.

  4. Tropical Storm Octave (1983): Although Octave did not directly impact Southern California, its remnants caused severe flooding in parts of the state. The storm claimed several lives, destroyed hundreds of homes, and caused millions of dollars in damages.

  5. Hurricane Dolores (2015): Dolores did not make direct landfall in Southern California, but its remnants brought heavy rainfall to the region. The rain caused flash flooding, leading to property damage and transportation disruptions.

It’s essential to note that while these storms have been among the most significant to impact Southern California, they are rare events. The region typically sees less tropical storm activity than other parts of the United States, such as the Gulf Coast or Southeast. However, it’s always crucial for residents to stay informed and prepared for any potential storms, especially during hurricane season.

  4. Play Card or Board Games: If you have family members or roommates with you, a deck of cards or board games can provide hours of entertainment and help pass the time.

  5. Solve Puzzles: Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, or jigsaw puzzles can be a great way to keep your mind engaged and focused away from the storm outside.

Alcohol and Sleep Cycle – How to Sleep Better After Drinking Alcohol

alcohol drink elegant 1287549 scaled
Alcohol is the most common type of sleep aid. But drinking alcohol regularly can interfere with your sleeping pattern. It may affect sleep quality, too. Does this mean that you need to give up alcohol altogether? No. You simply need to be smarter about how you manage your liquor consumption, instead. alcoholCaption: How to sleep better after drinking alcohol Source: Pexels   There are several strategies that you can use to ensure better sleep after drinking alcohol.   Avoid Caffeine   If you want to sleep better after having a drink, stay away from caffeine. This does not only refer to coffee. You must refrain from consuming other caffeinated drinks like sodas, teas, and energy drinks. They will keep you awake at night. If you combine that with the effect of alcohol in your body, it will be hard to enjoy a restful night.   If a night of drinking is on the horizon, no worries. Whether you are out with friends or enjoying the game with any of these great tasting beers, you should be smart. Make sure you avoid having any caffeinated drinks, especially during the hours close to when you plan to hit the sack.   Have a Balanced Meal   Drinking your favorite beer or wine on a full belly can reduce the impact of alcohol on your sleep (versus not having a full meal). When you are going out for a drink or sipping some spirits at home, don’t skip dinner. A solid and balanced meal can regulate your body’s absorption of the alcohol.   Make sure you have enough protein, fat, and carbohydrates. This will allow the alcohol to be gradually introduced to your bloodstream, reducing its overall impact on your body. The less disruption your body has, the better your sleep will be.   Drink Plenty of Water   Alcoholic drinks, like beer, can make you dehydrated. When your body is dehydrated, you not only toss and turn during your sleep, you can also suffer from a headache the next morning. So keep yourself hydrated. Drinking plenty of water can combat the diuretic effect of alcohol on your body.   Tips for better sleep after drinking alcohol Source: Pexels   The goal is to drink as much water as the alcohol you consume. When it is not possible, just try to drink as much water as possible. This will help keep your body hydrated. Another benefit to drinking plenty of water is that it fills you up quickly. As a result, you don’t consume as much alcohol as you normally would.   Say No to Smoking   Aside from staying away from the bad combination of alcohol and caffeine, smoking should be avoided too. A lot of people like to drink and smoke at the same time. If you are one of them, don’t be surprised if you have trouble sleeping at night. Nicotine (found in cigarettes) is a stimulant. If you smoke, it can definitely keep you awake at night.   By reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke (or by not smoking at all), you will be able to sleep faster. This can also improve the quality of your sleep.   Turn Off the Alarm   If you have an alarm set on the regular, turn it off just before hitting the bed. Give your body a chance to recover from the effects of alcohol during your sleep. Do not disrupt that sleeping cycle with an alarm going off.   If possible, keep your phone away from your bed, too. You would not want to be woken up by a text message or call. After all, you are going to be highly sensitive to any noise so you want to minimize any disruptions as much as possible.   Stay off Alcohol Before Hitting the Bed   A lot of people have relied on alcoholic drinks such as beer or wine to help them get to sleep. But studies have shown that this is actually doing the opposite. It is time to change your habit of getting a drink right before you hit the bed. This habit of yours can make you feel more awake and energetic, instead, which can then cause a disruption in your sleep cycle.   It is best to get started early on your alcohol consumption – this is called the ‘happy hour’. Do not wait until much later in the night when you are just about to go to bed to get your drink. You are more likely to sleep faster and more soundly when you have had your drink a few hours earlier.   Make Your Bedroom Cozy bedroom Sleep better even with alcohol Source: Pexels   This might seem like a simple step but it can be very effective if you want to fall asleep faster. A cozy bedroom is one that is dim and has a comfortable temperature that will help you doze off. Darker colors on the bedroom wall are also suitable for sleeping. If you are not into dark wall colors, neutral hues can create a relaxing atmosphere in the bedroom.   Ideally, your bedroom should be somewhere that is far from any sources of noise (such as the living room or a noisy street). The less disruptive noises there are, the sooner you can sleep. The quality of your sleep will be better, too. Setting the ideal temperature within your room can also make sleeping easier. Aim for a temperature range of 60-68 degrees Fahrenheit.   Switching to new bedding such as microfiber sheets can improve the quality of your sleep as well. The goal is to make your sleeping space as cozy as possible.   Final Reminders   Heavy drinking is associated with sleep disorders. If you want to reduce the impact of alcohol on your sleep, you might want to lower your consumption. Instead of drinking as a regular nightcap, you can skip some nights. If you can, limit alcohol consumption to 2-3 times a week. Follow a pattern that works for you to improve your sleep quality. It is always a good practice to keep things in moderation.

Best Supplements to Take Before Bed for Alcohol and Sleep

certain dietary supplements may help support your body before and after drinking alcohol by boosting hydration, liver health, and vitamin levels. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.

  1. B Vitamins: Alcohol depletes B vitamins in your body, particularly B1 (thiamine), B6, and B12, which are essential for energy production and maintaining healthy nerve function. A B-complex supplement can help replenish these nutrients.

  2. Milk Thistle: Traditionally used for liver health, milk thistle contains silymarin, a powerful antioxidant that may help protect the liver from toxins, including the effects of alcohol.

  3. N-Acetylcysteine (NAC): NAC is a precursor to glutathione, a powerful antioxidant in your body. Taking NAC can boost your levels of glutathione, helping to neutralize alcohol’s oxidative stress on the liver.

  4. Magnesium: Alcohol can contribute to a magnesium deficiency, and this mineral plays a crucial role in over 300 cellular processes, including energy production and heart health.

  5. Prickly Pear: Some research suggests that prickly pear extract can help reduce the symptoms of a hangover.

  6. Turmeric: The curcumin in turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It could potentially mitigate some liver damage caused by alcohol.

  7. Taurine: An amino acid that may protect the liver from alcohol-induced damage by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress.

  8. Ginger: Known for its anti-nausea properties, ginger could help with any upset stomach the next morning.

  9. Dihydromyricetin (DHM): Found in the Oriental raisin tree and rattan tea, DHM is suggested to reduce the effects of alcohol by enhancing the function of liver enzymes.

What Does Thread Count Mean? – More Isn’t Better

Welcome to the labyrinth of bed linen shopping, where the term “thread count” seems to be the unwavering North Star for consumers in search of quality. However, few understand what this ubiquitous term truly signifies or its impact on their sleep experience. This deep-dive investigation aims to unravel the complexity of thread count, challenge the myths surrounding it, and guide you towards an informed decision about your bedding choices.

layla bamboo sheets

Before we delve into the myths and realities, it’s crucial to establish what thread count is. Simply defined, thread count is the number of horizontal (weft) and vertical (warp) threads woven together in a square inch of fabric. For instance, if you have 100 threads lengthwise and 100 widthwise in a square inch of your sheet, your thread count will be 200.

The origins of this system trace back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the booming textiles industry sought ways to classify the quality of different fabrics. Over the years, thread count has been seen as a simple measure of fabric quality. However, the concept has been significantly distorted in recent years.

Common Myths Surrounding Thread Count

There’s a prevailing myth among consumers that equates higher thread count with superior quality — the ‘the higher, the better’ syndrome. The truth is, a sheet with a 1000 thread count doesn’t necessarily guarantee unrivaled luxury or comfort. This misconception stems from manipulative marketing practices, where some manufacturers artificially inflate thread counts by counting each ply within a multi-ply thread separately, creating a skewed perception of quality.

Moreover, an extremely high thread count doesn’t always translate into a softer or more comfortable sheet. In fact, sheets with exorbitant thread counts can often feel heavy and less breathable, disrupting your sleep rather than enhancing it.

Factors That Impact Sheet Quality Beyond Thread Count

While thread count has some bearing on the feel and durability of sheets, it isn’t the sole determinant of quality. Several other factors can significantly influence your sleep experience.

Firstly, the quality of the fiber is paramount. High-quality, long-staple cotton like Egyptian or Pima cotton tends to produce softer, more durable sheets than short-staple cotton, regardless of the thread count. The weave also plays a significant role in how the sheet feels and lasts. Percale weaves offer a crisp and cool feel, while sateen provides a silky, warm touch. Lastly, the finish can affect the sheets’ quality. Many sheets undergo chemical treatments to create a smoother, shinier surface, but these finishes can wash off over time, revealing a rougher texture.

In the end, a well-made sheet with a moderate thread count can feel far superior to a high-thread-count sheet made of low-quality fiber with a poor weave. It’s the combination of all these factors that truly determine the quality of your bedding, not thread count alone.

In Part Two of this investigation, we’ll delve deeper into the controversies and deceptive marketing tactics surrounding thread count, its environmental impact, and the future of sheet quality.

The Thread Count Controversy: Industry Marketing vs Reality

As the allure of high thread counts became a prevalent marketing tactic, the textile industry found itself mired in controversy. Several brands inflated their thread counts, counting multi-ply threads multiple times to suggest a higher-quality product. Such practices mislead consumers into believing they’re buying ultra-luxurious sheets when, in reality, they’re getting a product of standard or even sub-par quality.

This deceptive marketing practice has been a bone of contention, leading to lawsuits and stricter regulations on labeling thread counts. The textile industry is now pressed to adhere to a transparent, universally-accepted method of thread count calculation. The ‘ply’ of the thread, whether single or multi, should be clarified, and only single-ply threads should contribute to the count.

The textile industry is now pressed to adhere to a transparent, universally-accepted method of thread count calculation. The ‘ply’ of the thread, whether single or multi, should be clarified, and only single-ply threads should contribute to the count.

With a solid understanding of thread count and the factors that contribute to sheet quality, it’s time to address the question: How should one shop for sheets?

Don’t be swayed by extraordinarily high thread counts. Instead, aim for a thread count between 200-400 for percale weave and 300-600 for sateen weave. These ranges often offer the best balance between comfort, durability, and breathability.

The ideal thread count largely depends on the type of fabric and weave. For most cotton sheets, a thread count between 200 and 400 is often sufficient. These sheets offer a good balance of softness, durability, and breathability, making them comfortable for year-round use.

For percale weave sheets, known for their crisp and cool feel, a thread count between 200 and 300 is generally recommended. This range allows the sheets to maintain their breathability and light feel.

Sateen weave sheets, on the other hand, known for their smooth and silky feel, can handle a higher thread count without losing their breathability. A thread count between 300 and 600 is usually ideal for sateen sheets.

Linen, a material that is measured differently, doesn’t rely on a high thread count for its quality or comfort. For linen sheets, a thread count between 80 and 150 is considered good.

The type of fiber and weave also deserve careful consideration. Long-staple cotton like Egyptian or Pima, linen, or silk generally make the highest-quality sheets. For weaves, percale offers a crisp, cool feel that’s great for hot sleepers, while sateen has a smooth, buttery feel that offers more warmth.

Thread Count of Luxury Sheets

Many high-end manufacturers produce sheets with thread counts between 300 and 600, woven from high-quality, long-staple cottons like Egyptian or Supima cotton. This range provides a good balance between softness, strength, and breathability, delivering both comfort and durability.

That said, some luxury brands offer sheets with thread counts up to 1000 or more. These sheets, often made with multi-ply threads, can feel incredibly dense and silky. However, they might not breathe as well as sheets with lower thread counts, potentially leading to a warmer sleep.

There’s also a luxury market for linen, silk, and other high-end fabrics where thread count is less significant. For example, silk sheets are often graded by momme weight rather than thread count, while the quality of linen sheets hinges on the quality of the flax fibers and the craftsmanship of the weave.

Conclusion: Luxury Beyond Thread Count

Luxury sheets offer a blend of superior comfort, exceptional craftsmanship, and often, a high thread count. However, the thread count alone isn’t the definitive factor. The quality of the fibers, the weave, and the finish of the fabric are what truly set luxury sheets apart.

So, while the thread count of luxury sheets can vary widely, from the 300-600 range up into the 1000s, remember that true luxury lies in the details. Long-staple cottons, expert craftsmanship, and attention to finish contribute as much to the luxurious feel and durability of the sheets as the thread count itself. And most importantly, the best luxury sheets are the ones that feel the most luxurious to you.

Impact of Thread Count on the Environment

It’s also essential to consider the environmental implications of high-thread-count sheets. These sheets often require more resources and energy to produce, which can lead to greater carbon emissions and environmental impact. This production strain becomes particularly alarming considering the short life-span of sheets, which, on average, is around 5 years.

Fortunately, consumer consciousness is evolving. More people are recognizing the environmental impact of their purchases, leading to growing demand for sustainable, ethically-produced sheets. Options like organic cotton, linen, and bamboo are gaining popularity, not only for their minimal environmental footprint but also for their unique comfort and aesthetic qualities.

The Future of Thread Count and Sheet Quality

With evolving textile technologies and changing consumer preferences, the future of thread count and sheet quality is poised for significant transformation. Innovations in fabric manufacturing, like microfiber technologies, could redefine the metrics of sheet quality, while consumer demand for transparency and sustainability could lead to more honest marketing practices.

The narrative around thread count is gradually shifting from a misleading selling point to an element of informed consumer choice. This evolution will be driven by regulations, consumer advocacy, and a shift in industry practices towards sustainability and honesty.

A Retro Delve into 1980s Sleep Culture: The Evolution of the Mattress

1980s

In the vast expanse of human history, no invention has been more intimately linked to our daily lives than the humble mattress. The evolution of the mattress has shaped not just how we sleep, but how we live, work, and interact with one another. One notable period in this evolution is the 1980s—a decade marked by significant change and advancement in the mattress industry. Let’s venture back to this time of neon colors and synth-pop to explore the crucial transformations in mattress technology, materials, and marketing.

Rising Foam Tides: Memory Foam’s Entry into the Market

One of the most substantial changes to the mattress industry in the 80s was the introduction of memory foam, developed by NASA in the 1970s for aircraft cushions. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that the technology found its way into our bedrooms.

The company leading the charge was Tempur-Pedic, who licensed the foam technology from NASA in the early 1980s. The so-called “Tempur Foam” was marketed as a revolution in comfort and support, uniquely contouring to the body and offering unprecedented pressure relief. However, memory foam mattresses were prohibitively expensive at first, limiting their accessibility to most consumers throughout the decade.

A Bounce in Every Bedroom: The Waterbed Phenomenon

Perhaps no other piece of 80s furniture is as symbolic as the waterbed. Originally conceived in the late 60s by Charles Hall as a project for his master’s degree in design, waterbeds reached their peak popularity in the 1980s, comprising about 20% of the mattress market. These buoyant beds were seen as modern, even slightly rebellious, a distinctive blend of comfort and counterculture.

However, as time went on, the impracticalities of waterbeds became apparent. They were heavy, difficult to move, and prone to leaks. Moreover, the water’s constant motion could lead to sleep disruptions, contrary to Hall’s original intentions. By the end of the 80s, the waterbed fad began to wane, overtaken by emerging mattress technologies.

Marketing for the Masses: Strategic Branding in the Mattress Industry

A key aspect of the 1980s mattress industry was the increased focus on marketing and branding. Sealy’s “Proud Supporter of You” and Serta’s “We Make the World’s Best Mattress” campaigns reflected the decade’s spirit—catchy, bold, and consumer-focused. Mattress firms understood that they weren’t just selling a product; they were selling the promise of a better night’s sleep and improved well-being.

In the 80s, retailers also began bundling mattresses and box springs into a single purchase, branded as a “sleep system” or “bed set.” This practice, now a norm, was an innovative sales technique back then.

Regulation and Standardization: Setting the Industry’s Safety Standards

The 1980s also saw a significant move towards improved safety standards in the mattress industry. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued regulations in 1987 requiring all mattresses to meet flammability standards. These measures, while seemingly commonplace now, greatly enhanced consumer safety, setting the stage for more stringent regulations to follow in subsequent decades.

The Art of Sleep Science: Research & Consumer Awareness

Research into sleep science became increasingly popular during the 80s, changing the way mattresses were marketed and sold. The public was becoming more educated about the importance of quality sleep, and companies responded accordingly. They started to promote features such as ergonomics, body contouring, and pressure relief, rather than simply

In the mid-80s, research began to shed light on conditions like sleep apnea and insomnia, sparking conversations about how mattresses could impact these issues. This newfound emphasis on health and sleep quality also marked the initial steps towards the creation of custom mattresses, designed to cater to specific health requirements.

The Rise of King-Sized Comfort: Size Does Matter

The 1980s saw an interesting shift in consumer preferences towards larger mattress sizes. The introduction of the king and queen-sized mattresses signaled a departure from the previously standard double bed, a change inspired by the burgeoning sense of individualism and personal space in society.

This expansion in mattress dimensions wasn’t merely a passing trend; it reflected the growing desire for personal comfort and luxury in the domestic sphere. The king-size mattress became synonymous with opulence and comfort, fostering a sense of the bedroom as a private sanctuary rather than a mere functional space.

In Conclusion: A Decade of Transformation

The 1980s was undoubtedly a period of tremendous change for the mattress industry. From the advent of memory foam and the rise and fall of waterbeds, to the new focus on marketing and branding, and the increased awareness of sleep science, these shifts had a profound impact on how we perceive and value our sleep.

The heightened emphasis on safety and health, the drive for personal comfort and luxury, and the remarkable innovations in technology have continued to shape the mattress industry well into the 21st century. Even as we now slumber on smart beds and eco-friendly mattresses, the echoes of the 1980s still reverberate in the bedrooms of today, reminding us of a decade that forever transformed the way we sleep.

Fostering Entrepreneurship: Small Business Boom in the Mattress Industry

The shift in societal values during the 80s, which prioritized consumer choice and individualism, gave rise to an unexpected boon in the mattress industry. Small businesses started to spring up nationwide, offering locally-made, custom mattresses that appealed to an increasingly discerning customer base. These local mattress stores served as an alternative to the dominant large manufacturers and tapped into the growing consumer appetite for specialized, personal products.

Mattresses as Status Symbols: The Luxury Market Emerges

As the decade progressed, mattresses started to be viewed not merely as utilitarian objects but also as status symbols. Luxury brands, such as Stearns & Foster and Aireloom, gained prominence, offering high-end mattresses that were marketed as the epitome of comfort and sophistication. Crafted with exotic materials like silk and cashmere, these mattresses were priced well beyond the reach of the average consumer, further establishing them as luxury items.

Advancements in Innerspring Technology: Towards Better Support

The 1980s also saw substantial improvements in innerspring technology, which had long been the cornerstone of the mattress industry. Manufacturers started experimenting with various coil configurations to optimize support and comfort. Innovations included the use of individually pocketed springs, which helped to reduce motion transfer and improve body contouring. Despite the introduction of memory foam, innerspring mattresses remained popular throughout the 80s due to their durability and familiarity among consumers.

The Beginning of the End for Flipping: The No-Flip Revolution

In a less celebrated but significant development, the late 80s marked the beginning of the “no-flip” mattress revolution. Until this point, it was standard advice to regularly flip and rotate your mattress to ensure even wear. However, with the advent of new construction methods and materials, manufacturers started to design one-sided mattresses that didn’t require flipping. This convenience appealed to consumers and started a trend that would gain traction in the following decades.

Wrapping Up: The Legacy of the 80s Mattress Industry

In examining the 1980s, it becomes evident that this was a decade of substantial change for the mattress industry. The intersection of technological advancements, changing societal values, increased emphasis on health and safety, and marketing innovations collectively forged a new path for the industry.

The period’s influence extends beyond the introduction of specific products or trends. The 80s fostered an environment that prompted consumers to reassess their relationship with sleep and the tools that facilitate it. The shift in perspective from viewing mattresses as a mere necessity to recognizing them as integral to our health and well-being has forever shaped the trajectory of the industry.

As we lie down on our beds tonight, let’s spare a thought for the 1980s — a decade that redefined the way we sleep and, in doing so, significantly impacted our overall quality of life.

While sales and discounts can be tempting, it’s important to approach the buying process with a discerning eye to ensure you’re truly getting a good deal. Here are some tips to help you get the best price:

  1. Research and Compare: Before making a purchase, invest time in researching different mattress brands, models, and their average prices. This will give you a benchmark to evaluate the discounts and determine if they are genuinely worthwhile.

  2. Track Prices: Track the prices of the mattresses you’re interested in over a period of time. This will allow you to identify patterns, recognize fluctuations, and understand what constitutes a good discount. By monitoring prices, you’ll be equipped with valuable knowledge when the sales season arrives.

  3. Sign up for Newsletters: Subscribe to newsletters from reputable mattress retailers. They often send out exclusive deals, early access to sales, and promotional codes to their subscribers. This can give you a head start and increase your chances of snagging the best discounts.

  4. Compare Policies: Beyond the price, consider the warranty, return policy, and customer reviews of the mattress you intend to purchase. A good price should be complemented by favorable terms and a reputable brand that ensures your satisfaction in the long run.

  5. Negotiate: Don’t be afraid to negotiate the price, especially if you’re buying from a brick-and-mortar store. Many retailers are open to negotiating to secure a sale, particularly if you’ve done your research and can demonstrate knowledge of competing prices.

While discounts play a crucial role, don’t compromise on the features that matter most to you, such as comfort, support, and durability. By employing these strategies and being an informed shopper, you’ll be well on your way to securing the best price on your new mattress.

Boll and Branch Mattress

Boll and Branch Mattress

In an industry often characterized by overstated promises and underwhelming realities, the Boll & Branch Mattress emerges as a distinct offering that combines comfortable sleep, reliable support, and sustainability in an exemplary manner.

The first thing that captures attention is the bed’s thoughtful design, aimed at delivering a restful, undisturbed sleep night after night. The mattress’s handcrafted tufting not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also keeps the layers intact, preventing any lump formation or unwanted shifting over time.

Crafted with four unique layers, the Boll & Branch Mattress ensures a balanced blend of comfort and support. The top layer, comprised of organic wool and poly fiber, strikes an effective temperature balance, keeping you warm in winters and cool in summers. It further acts as a natural flame retardant, a safer alternative to chemical flame barriers found in many other mattresses.

The second layer is where the comfort truly starts to seep in. The layer of graphite-infused natural latex, besides being naturally hypoallergenic, offers a cushioning effect that instantly relieves pressure points. With a medium-firm feel, it contours to your body’s natural shape, allowing for restful sleep with minimal disturbances.

The mattress’s core is formed by the third layer, a system of individually pocketed coils. Arranged in five ergonomic zones, these coils ensure an optimal balance of support and flexibility, reinforcing the mattress’s medium-firm comfort rating. Moreover, the edge-to-edge coil support promotes an even sleeping surface and increases the usable bed space.

The last layer, a layer of high-density polyfoam, forms a sturdy base for the mattress, adding to its durability and stability. It works in tandem with the coil system to provide overall structural support to the mattress, ensuring it retains its shape and support over the years.

The mattress’s eco-credentials are impressive too. Boll & Branch utilize only ethically sourced, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic cotton, and latex in their mattress. This dedication to sustainability sets them apart in an industry not well-known for its environmental considerations.

Another aspect worth mentioning is the brand’s commitment to customer service. With a generous 100-night trial period and a 10-year warranty, Boll & Branch stands firmly behind the quality and durability of their product.

However, some users may find the Boll & Branch Mattress’s premium pricing a drawback. Nevertheless, for those who value quality sleep, eco-friendly materials, and lasting durability, the mattress’s high cost might well be a worthwhile investment.

In conclusion, the Boll & Branch Mattress is a commendable combination of comfort, support, and sustainability. It offers a premium sleep experience, aligns with eco-conscious values, and is backed by a confident warranty. Its price may be on the higher end of the spectrum, but for those who value sleep quality and sustainability, it’s a price worth paying.

Boll & Branch Mattress vs. Avocado Mattress

In the world of premium, eco-friendly mattresses, two names that consistently crop up are Boll & Branch and Avocado Green. Both are renowned for their commitment to sustainability, quality craftsmanship, and customer service. While they share similarities, they also offer unique characteristics worth exploring to make an informed buying decision.

Let’s delve into this detailed comparative review.

Comfort & Support:

The Boll & Branch Mattress focuses on medium-firm comfort with its four-layer design: a wool-poly fiber top, a graphite-infused latex layer, a zoned pocketed coil system, and a high-density polyfoam base. This combination results in a balanced comfort level with optimal support for the spine and effective pressure point relief.

On the other hand, the Avocado Green Mattress features a similar structure with an organic cotton cover, a layer of organic wool, Dunlop latex, and a zoned pocketed coil system. However, Avocado’s mattress tends towards the firmer side, providing extra support but potentially lacking in plushness. An optional pillow-top version is available for those seeking a softer feel.

Materials & Sustainability:

Both companies utilize GOTS certified organic cotton and latex, standing firm on their commitment to eco-friendliness. Boll & Branch edges out slightly with its graphite-infused latex, providing a unique approach to temperature regulation. Avocado, however, offers eco-conscious consumers an option with vegan certification, replacing the wool layer with organic cotton in the Vegan Mattress variant.

Durability & Warranty:

When it comes to durability, both mattresses stand their ground. The Boll & Branch’s handcrafted tufting and solid polyfoam base ensure long-lasting durability, while Avocado’s robust coil system and Dunlop latex layer contribute to an extended lifespan. Both companies offer a 10-year warranty, a testament to their confidence in the product.

Price:

Boll & Branch tends to be on the pricier side, reflecting its high-end positioning. Conversely, Avocado offers a more affordable premium option. While the optional pillow-top variant increases the price, it still comes in under the cost of a Boll & Branch Mattress.

In summary, the choice between Boll & Branch and Avocado Green largely depends on individual preferences and budget. If you prefer a medium-firm comfort with premium service and cost isn’t a concern, Boll & Branch may be your go-to option. However, if firm support, vegan options, and a lower price point hold more sway, Avocado Green would be an excellent choice.

The Ultimate Guide to the Best Snoring Mouthguards of 2025

zquiet

Snoring is a common problem that affects millions of people worldwide. Not only can it disrupt the sleep of the snorer, but it can also affect the quality of life for those sharing the same living space. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the best snoring mouthguards available in 2023, providing detailed information on the top options to help you and your loved ones reclaim peaceful nights of restful sleep.

How Snoring Mouthguards Work

Before diving into the top snoring mouthguards, it’s important to understand how they work. Snoring occurs when airway muscles in the throat relax during sleep, narrowing the passage for airflow. This narrowing causes vibrations in the soft tissues, which in turn creates the sound of snoring. Mouthguards help alleviate this problem by repositioning the lower jaw and tongue, opening up the airway to reduce vibrations and minimize snoring.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Snoring Mouthguard

  1. Comfort: The mouthguard should be comfortable to wear throughout the night. Look for adjustable designs, soft materials, and a good fit.

  2. Effectiveness: The device should be proven to reduce or eliminate snoring effectively. Read reviews and research the success rate of the mouthguard before making your decision.

  3. Durability: Invest in a mouthguard made from high-quality materials that will last for an extended period.

  4. Price: Consider the price of the mouthguard in relation to its effectiveness and durability. While some mouthguards may be more affordable, they may not offer the same level of comfort and efficacy.

  5. Ease of use: A good snoring mouthguard should be easy to insert, remove, and clean.

The built-in cushioning offers additional comfort for users.

Additional Tips for Choosing the Right Snoring Mouthguard

  1. Consult with a medical professional: Before investing in a snoring mouthguard, it’s wise to consult with your healthcare provider or a sleep specialist to ensure the device is suitable for your needs. They can help identify the root cause of your snoring and recommend the most effective treatment options.

  2. Trial periods and warranties: Many manufacturers offer a trial period or money-back guarantee, allowing you to test the mouthguard and ensure it works effectively for you. Look for products with generous warranties and return policies, giving you peace of mind in your investment.

  3. Combination therapy: In some cases, using a snoring mouthguard in conjunction with other treatments such as lifestyle changes, positional therapy, or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) devices may provide the most effective solution for snoring.

Maintaining and Caring for Your Snoring Mouthguard

  1. Cleaning: Regular cleaning is essential to maintain the effectiveness of your mouthguard and ensure proper hygiene. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning, which may involve using a toothbrush, mild soap, and water, or a specialized cleaning solution.

  2. Storage: When not in use, store your mouthguard in a clean, dry, and ventilated container to prevent bacterial growth and extend the device’s lifespan.

  3. Regular inspection: Regularly check your mouthguard for signs of wear or damage. If you notice any issues, it may be time to replace the device to maintain optimal snoring reduction.

Price vs. Quality with Snoring Mouthguards

While it’s tempting to assume that a more expensive snoring mouthguard automatically equates to a better product, this is not always the case. A higher price tag may reflect higher-quality materials, advanced technology, or additional features, but it does not guarantee superior effectiveness or comfort.

When selecting a snoring mouthguard, it’s essential to consider various factors such as comfort, effectiveness, durability, and ease of use, rather than relying solely on the price. Read customer reviews, research the success rate of the device, and consult with a medical professional to ensure you are making an informed decision.

It’s also important to remember that the most suitable snoring mouthguard for you may not be the most expensive option on the market. A well-chosen, affordable mouthguard can be just as effective as a pricier alternative if it addresses the root cause of your snoring and fits comfortably. In conclusion, while more expensive snoring mouthguards may offer certain advantages, a higher price does not automatically guarantee a better product. Instead, focus on finding a device that meets your specific needs and requirements for the most effective and comfortable snoring solution.

Types of Anti-Snoring Mouthpieces: MADs vs. TRDs

There are two primary types of anti-snoring mouthpieces: Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs) and Tongue Retaining Devices (TRDs). Each type works differently to alleviate snoring and has its own set of pros and cons. Let’s explore these two types of mouthpieces in more detail.

  1. Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs)

MADs work by repositioning the lower jaw (mandible) forward, which helps to maintain an open airway and reduce snoring. These devices are custom-fitted or boil-and-bite, allowing for a comfortable and secure fit.

Pros:

  • Effective for many snorers, addressing the root cause of snoring for some individuals.
  • Adjustable models allow for gradual advancement of the jaw, providing customized treatment.
  • Can help with mild to moderate sleep apnea in some cases, when prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Cons:

  • Can cause initial discomfort or soreness in the jaw muscles and temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
  • May not be suitable for individuals with dental issues, such as loose teeth, gum disease, or those wearing dentures.
  • Can be more expensive than TRDs, particularly for custom-fitted models.
  1. Tongue Retaining Devices (TRDs)

TRDs, also known as tongue stabilizing devices (TSDs), work by holding the tongue forward to prevent it from falling back and obstructing the airway during sleep. These devices use suction to keep the tongue in place and are usually made of soft, flexible materials.

Pros:

  • Effective for a wide range of snorers, including those who cannot use MADs due to dental issues.
  • Typically more comfortable than MADs, as they do not place pressure on the teeth or jaw.
  • One-size-fits-most design means no need for custom fitting, making them more affordable than some MADs.

Cons:

  • May not be suitable for individuals who breathe primarily through their mouths during sleep, as TRDs encourage nasal breathing.
  • Can cause initial discomfort or soreness on the tongue, especially during the adjustment period.
  • May not be as effective for individuals with severe sleep apnea or those with nasal congestion or allergies.

In conclusion, both MADs and TRDs can be effective solutions for snoring, but the best option depends on the individual’s specific needs and preferences. It’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before choosing an anti-snoring mouthpiece to ensure that it’s appropriate for your situation and to receive guidance on proper usage.

Additional Snoring Products

In addition to snoring mouthguards, there are several other products on the market designed to help reduce or eliminate snoring. These alternatives can be used alone or in combination with a mouthguard to provide an effective solution for snoring.

  1. Nasal Strips and Dilators: These adhesive strips or inserted dilators help to open up the nasal passages, improving airflow and reducing snoring caused by nasal congestion or anatomical issues.

  2. Anti-Snore Pillows: Specially designed pillows can help to promote proper sleep posture, which may reduce snoring by keeping the airways open. Some anti-snore pillows use memory foam or other supportive materials to maintain spinal alignment, while others feature a unique shape to encourage side-sleeping, which can reduce snoring for some individuals.

  3. Positional Therapy Devices: These wearable devices, such as anti-snore belts or vests, encourage side-sleeping by making it uncomfortable to sleep on your back. Sleeping on your side can help to keep your airway open, reducing the likelihood of snoring.

  4. White Noise Machines: While white noise machines do not address the underlying cause of snoring, they can help to mask the noise, making it easier for both the snorer and their bed partner to fall asleep and stay asleep.

  5. Humidifiers: Dry air can irritate the nasal passages and throat, potentially contributing to snoring. Using a humidifier in your bedroom can help to maintain optimal humidity levels, which may reduce snoring for some individuals.

  6. CPAP Machines: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines are prescribed for individuals with moderate to severe sleep apnea, a condition that often causes snoring. The device delivers a constant flow of air through a mask, keeping the airway open and preventing snoring.

  7. Lifestyle Changes: Adopting healthier habits, such as losing weight, avoiding alcohol and sedatives before bedtime, and practicing good sleep hygiene, can also help to reduce or eliminate snoring.

In summary, there are various snoring products and strategies available to help address snoring concerns. It’s essential to consult with a medical professional to determine the underlying cause of your snoring and find the most effective combination of treatments tailored to your specific needs.

The Surgery Option

Surgery is another option for individuals who have not found relief from snoring through non-invasive treatments such as mouthguards or lifestyle changes. Surgical procedures for snoring typically target the anatomical factors contributing to the problem, such as excess soft tissue in the throat, enlarged tonsils, or a deviated nasal septum. It’s important to consult with a medical professional to determine if surgery is an appropriate option for your specific case.

Some common surgical procedures for snoring include:

  1. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP): This procedure involves the removal of excess tissue from the throat, including the uvula, soft palate, and sometimes the tonsils, to widen the airway and reduce snoring.

  2. Tonsillectomy: Enlarged tonsils can obstruct the airway and contribute to snoring. In this case, a tonsillectomy, or removal of the tonsils, may be recommended to alleviate snoring.

  3. Septoplasty: A deviated nasal septum can cause difficulty breathing through the nose and contribute to snoring. Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that straightens the septum, improving airflow and potentially reducing snoring.

  4. Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): This minimally invasive procedure involves the use of radiofrequency energy to shrink and stiffen the soft tissues in the throat. This can help to reduce airway obstruction and snoring.

  5. Pillar Procedure: Small implants are inserted into the soft palate to stiffen it and reduce vibrations that cause snoring.

  6. Laser-Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP): Similar to UPPP, this procedure uses a laser to remove excess tissue from the uvula and soft palate, enlarging the airway and reducing snoring.

It’s important to note that surgical interventions for snoring carry potential risks and complications, and the success rate can vary between individuals. Surgery should be considered a last resort after other non-invasive treatment options have been exhausted. Consult with a healthcare professional or sleep specialist to discuss your specific situation and determine the most appropriate course of action for treating your snoring.

Pillows and Adjustable Beds

Pillow loft and adjustable beds are two additional factors that can contribute to alleviating snoring by promoting proper sleep posture and improving airflow. Let’s explore these solutions in more detail.

Pillow Loft

Pillow loft refers to the height or thickness of a pillow. The ideal pillow loft depends on an individual’s sleep position, head size, and body weight. The right pillow loft can help maintain proper spinal alignment and prevent airway obstruction, both of which can contribute to reducing snoring.

  1. Side Sleepers: A higher loft pillow is recommended for side sleepers to keep the head and neck aligned with the spine. This position helps to keep the airway open, potentially reducing snoring.

  2. Back Sleepers: A medium loft pillow is usually best for back sleepers. This height supports the natural curve of the neck without pushing the head too far forward, which can contribute to airway obstruction and snoring.

  3. Stomach Sleepers: A low loft pillow is ideal for stomach sleepers to minimize neck strain. However, stomach sleeping is generally not recommended for individuals who snore, as this position can exacerbate airway obstruction.

Adjustable Beds

Adjustable beds, also known as adjustable base beds or electric beds, can be an effective solution for reducing snoring. These beds allow users to elevate their head and upper body, promoting better airflow and reducing the likelihood of airway obstruction.

  1. Improved Airflow: By elevating the head and upper body, adjustable beds can help to open the airway, making it easier to breathe and reducing snoring.

  2. Customization: Adjustable beds offer a high level of customization, allowing users to find the most comfortable and effective position for reducing snoring. Many adjustable beds also come with preset positions specifically designed to combat snoring.

  3. Reduced Acid Reflux: Elevating the head and upper body can also help to reduce acid reflux, a condition that can contribute to snoring by causing inflammation and irritation in the throat.

In conclusion, the proper pillow loft and adjustable beds can play a significant role in reducing snoring by promoting optimal sleep posture and improving airflow. When combined with other treatments, such as snoring mouthguards or lifestyle changes, these sleep solutions can greatly enhance sleep quality for both the snorer and their bed partner.

Lifestyle Adjustments to Reduce Snoring

Making lifestyle adjustments can significantly impact the severity of snoring or even eliminate it altogether. By addressing the factors contributing to snoring, these changes can help improve sleep quality and overall well-being. Here are some lifestyle adjustments to consider:

  1. Maintain a healthy weight: Excess weight, particularly around the neck, can put pressure on the airway, leading to snoring. Losing weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise can help alleviate snoring in some individuals.

  2. Establish a sleep routine: Going to bed and waking up at consistent times every day can help regulate your body’s internal clock, promoting better sleep quality. Make sure to get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night for optimal rest.

  3. Sleep on your side: Sleeping on your side, rather than on your back, can help to keep your airway open and reduce snoring. You can try using a body pillow or a positional therapy device to encourage side-sleeping.

  4. Avoid alcohol and sedatives: Alcohol and sedatives relax the muscles in the throat, which can contribute to airway obstruction and snoring. Try to avoid consuming these substances, particularly in the hours leading up to bedtime.

  5. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help to keep your nasal passages and throat moist, potentially reducing snoring. Dehydration can lead to the production of thicker mucus, which can obstruct the airway.

  6. Quit smoking: Smoking irritates the airway, leading to inflammation and swelling that can cause snoring. Quitting smoking can have numerous health benefits, including reducing snoring.

  7. Treat allergies: Allergies can cause nasal congestion and inflammation, making it more difficult to breathe through the nose and increasing the likelihood of snoring. Speak with a healthcare professional about managing your allergies to help alleviate snoring.

  8. Use a humidifier: Dry air can irritate the throat and nasal passages, potentially contributing to snoring. A humidifier can help maintain optimal humidity levels in your bedroom, promoting better breathing and reducing snoring.

By implementing these lifestyle adjustments, you can address the factors contributing to snoring and improve your sleep quality. It’s essential to be patient and persistent, as changes in lifestyle may take time to show results. Consult with a healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate combination of lifestyle adjustments and treatments tailored to your specific needs.

Research on Snoring Mouthguards

Snoring mouthguards, also known as anti-snoring mouthpieces or oral appliances, have been widely studied for their effectiveness in treating snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnea. Numerous scientific studies and clinical trials have provided valuable insights into the efficacy and safety of these devices. Here are some key findings from research on snoring mouthguards:

  1. Effectiveness

A 2015 meta-analysis published in the journal Chest analyzed data from 67 studies on oral appliances for obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. The results showed that oral appliances were effective in reducing the severity of sleep apnea, improving oxygen saturation levels, and decreasing snoring (Sutherland et al., 2015).

  1. Comparison to CPAP

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy is considered the gold standard for treating sleep apnea. Several studies have compared the effectiveness of oral appliances to CPAP therapy. A 2013 study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine found that while CPAP was more effective in reducing apnea severity, oral appliances were similarly effective in improving daytime functioning and quality of life (Gagnadoux et al., 2013).

  1. Patient Compliance

One of the challenges with CPAP therapy is patient compliance, as some individuals find it uncomfortable or difficult to use consistently. Research has shown that patients tend to have higher compliance rates with oral appliances than with CPAP therapy. A 2018 study published in the journal Sleep found that patients were more likely to use oral appliances regularly and for longer periods compared to CPAP (Dieltjens et al., 2018).

  1. Side Effects and Complications

While snoring mouthguards are generally considered safe, they can cause some side effects, including jaw pain, tooth discomfort, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues. A 2014 study published in the journal Sleep and Breathing found that most side effects were mild and temporary, with the majority of patients continuing to use their oral appliance despite the side effects (Almeida et al., 2014).

In summary, research on snoring mouthguards has demonstrated their effectiveness in reducing snoring and improving sleep quality, particularly for individuals with mild to moderate sleep apnea. While oral appliances may not be as effective as CPAP therapy in treating severe sleep apnea, they offer a viable alternative for those who cannot tolerate CPAP or prefer a more discreet and comfortable treatment option. As with any treatment, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine if a snoring mouthguard is appropriate for your specific needs and to receive guidance on proper usage.
