Who the Nidra mask is right for — and who should skip it

The contoured shape is the whole argument for this mask. Because the cups arch over the eye sockets instead of pressing flat against the lids, many people can blink without the fabric pressing on their eyelids; shifting on a pillow depends on fit and position. That makes it a good fit for three groups in particular: shift workers sleeping in daylight, travelers who want something that packs flat, and anyone who wears eye makeup or lash extensions and does not want it smeared across the fabric.

Skip it if you need total blackout for light sensitivity or migraine. Light leakage can occur at the nose bridge, but the amount varies by mask design, facial contours and strap fit. Side sleepers who bury their face in the pillow will also compress the cups, which reduces the benefit you paid for.

Getting the fit right

• Set the strap so the mask sits just above the eyebrows and below the cheekbone. Too high and light leaks under the nose; too tight and you get pressure headaches.
• If light still gets in at the bridge of the nose, pinch the nose flap inward before you lie down rather than tightening the strap.
• Wear a wide, flat strap position across the back of the head, not over the crown — that is what causes the mask to ride up overnight.

It depends on your face shape and pillow. Contoured cups can leave space around the lashes, but the cup may press against the pillow or shift when you lie on your side.

How often should you replace a foam sleep mask?
