How Yawnder Tests and Scores Mattresses
Every test happens in our own Encinitas showroom — see the mattresses available to test in San Diego.
Every mattress inside our current standardized testing program runs the same protocol in our Encinitas showroom: part of the rubric is measured on instruments and part is evaluated hands-on. Instrument-measured: firmness, impact response, motion transfer and cooling. Hands-on evaluation: pressure relief, edge support, spine alignment, durability and responsiveness. 142 mattresses: 131 with complete standardized records and 1 with partial standardized records. Partial means some standardized testing categories are available. Missing values are shown as —. All of them are listed in the comparison tool, and 124 of our 294 published reviews carry a verified standardized-testing record. Every scored review shows the same standardized test-data table so you can read across brands without translating marketing language. Older articles in our review archive predate this protocol and are labelled by how they were actually evaluated — see how each review is labelled below.

Responsiveness
Hands-on evaluation of how quickly the surface recovers and how easily a sleeper can change position. Published as a comparison metric but not currently weighted into the overall Yawnder Score.
Instrument-measured: firmness, impact response, motion transfer and cooling. Hands-on evaluation: pressure relief, edge support, spine alignment, durability and responsiveness. We publish 0–10 category scores, so you will not see pressure-map readings, per-bed temperature traces or edge-sink measurements on our pages — we do not record them.
What happens when a measurement is missing
A standardized Yawnder Score requires every weighted category above. When one category genuinely was not measured on a bed, we do not score it as a zero and we do not guess: that category’s weight is removed and the remaining weights are re-normalized across the measurements we actually have, so the published score always reconciles with the component scores shown on the page. If less than half of the total weight is available, we publish no standardized overall score at all — the review shows the individual measurements and its evaluation label instead. Any review that predates this protocol is labelled below and its older rating is presented as a legacy review score, never as standardized testing.
How each review is labelled
Our library is older than our current scoring protocol, so every review carries a label at the top saying how it was actually evaluated. That label is stored once on the mattress record itself, so the review page, this comparison database and every buying guide always show the same status for the same bed. We never backdate a test that did not happen.
- Complete standardized record — all required categories in Yawnder’s current standardized testing program have been completed. The comparison database contains 131 complete records.
- Partial standardized record — some standardized testing categories are available. Missing values are shown as —. The comparison database contains 1 partial records.
- Manufacturer-spec record — published manufacturer specifications only; the model carries no Yawnder test scores yet.
- Hands-on review — the mattress was evaluated in person but does not have a complete record under the current standardized testing program.
- Research & editorial — written from manufacturer specifications, owner feedback and category research rather than an in-person test of that exact model.
- Legacy / Discontinued — the model is no longer current. Its review and scores stay published as historical reference rather than current test data.
Data sources & AI-assisted analysis
Our ratings start with instrument-measured testing and hands-on evaluation in our Encinitas showroom. To make sure we are not missing real-world patterns, we also use AI to filter through thousands of customer reviews and other data points — warranty claims, return reasons, longevity complaints, and praise — so the scores reflect both our standardized testing program and what owners actually experience. A human editor reviews every AI-derived insight before it is published, and no commercial relationship influences the result.
How to read a score
- 9.0+ Exceptional — top of its category, few compromises.
- 8.5–8.9 Excellent — a safe buy for its intended sleeper.
- 7.5–8.4 Very good — strong, with one clear trade-off.
- 6.5–7.4 Good — works at the right price, not at MSRP.
- Below 6.5 Mixed or skip — we say so plainly in the review.
Independence
Reviews are written before any commercial relationship is considered. Some links earn a commission if you buy; that never changes a score, a ranking, or the order of the comparison table. Mattresses in the standardized program are tested at our Encinitas showroom by the Yawnder Reviews team; older reviews say on the page how they were evaluated.
