Who writes and tests
Ben Trapskin — founder, reviewer and editor
Ben has spent more than a decade buying, testing and selling mattresses, sheets, pillows, duvet inserts, comforters, adjustable bases and sleep gadgets. He writes and edits every review on this site, and he runs the Yawnder showroom in Encinitas, where customers try the beds he writes about and tell him what actually held up after a year.

How a product earns a score
Our review archive goes back more than a decade, and it is older than our current standardized testing protocol. So a Yawnder article does not automatically carry a standardized score: every review is labelled at the top with how it was actually evaluated — standardized lab test, hands-on review, research & editorial, or legacy review.
Only reviews with a verified standardized-testing record on file carry a current standardized score and the standardized lab-data table. Everything inside that program is graded on the identical published rubric — pressure relief, support and spinal alignment, motion isolation, edge support, temperature, materials and durability, and value — with the weighting, the measurement method and the score bands published rather than implied. Older hands-on impressions stay on the site as first-hand notes, but their numbers are not presented as comparable with the scored lineup.

Editorial policy
- No paid placements. A brand cannot buy a score, a ranking position, an award badge or a mention. We have never sold one and we will not.
- We label the evidence. A standardized score only goes on a product we measured ourselves on the current protocol in the Encinitas showroom. Where a review is based on in-person impressions, manufacturer specifications or category research instead, the label at the top of the article says exactly that.
- Same rubric inside the program. Every product in the current standardized testing program is graded on the identical rubric, whether or not we sell it — and a bed we stock can and does lose to one we don’t.
- We publish the downsides. If a mattress runs hot, sleeps firmer than advertised or has weak edges, that goes in the review, including for brands we carry.
- Honest update dates. Models change construction without changing names, so reviews get re-examined as we work through the library. The visible editorial update date moves only after a substantive editorial review — never because of a plugin release, a link sweep or another technical edit — and the ranking tables are rebuilt from the same dataset the scored reviews use. - Corrections. If we get a spec, price or claim wrong, we fix the page and note the change. Email us and we will look at it.
How we make money
Two ways, both disclosed. Yawnder is a retailer — we sell mattresses, bases and bedding from our San Diego showroom and online. We also earn affiliate commission when you buy through some of the links on this site. Commission never changes a score, a rank or the order of a list, and the rate is not a factor in the rubric. Brands that pay nothing sit at the top of our tables when they earn it.
