Boring Mattress Company is a company that sells mattresses online. They sell a mattress made with high-quality foam and springs, and they focus on providing a good night’s sleep at a fair price. They avoid using gimmicks and fancy materials, and they don’t charge extra for things like celebrity endorsements.

Boring Mattress Co was founded by Daehee Park. He is a multifaceted individual with experience in various fields, making it difficult to pinpoint a single definitive answer. Here’s what I found about him:

Entrepreneur:

  • Co-founder of Tuft & Needle: Park is most well-known for co-founding Tuft & Needle, a successful online mattress company, in 2012. This venture disrupted the traditional mattress industry by offering high-quality products at competitive prices through a direct-to-consumer model.
  • Founder of Boring Mattress Co.: This newer mattress company aims to offer high-quality, affordable mattresses while minimizing marketing and unnecessary features.

Professional Background:

  • Internet Startup experience: Prior to Tuft & Needle, Park worked for several internet startups, gaining valuable experience in the digital domain.
  • Marketing strategist: He also held a position as a marketing strategist for Acxiom, an ad tech company.
  • Film production: Notably, his LinkedIn profile mentions spending 20 years working in film production in South Korea before transitioning to other ventures.

Other:

  • Mentor and advisor: Currently, Park mentors aspiring entrepreneurs and advises growth-stage companies, sharing his expertise and experience.
  • Education: He earned a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity & risk analysis from Penn State University.

The Boring Mattress Co Story

A co-founder of Tuft & Needle, a pioneer in the direct-to-consumer mattress space, expresses frustration with the current mattress market. It’s become overly complicated, filled with gimmicks, and confusing for consumers seeking a simple, good-quality bed.

Having witnessed even Tuft & Needle stray from its original mission, they teamed up with two others to launch Boring Mattress Company. Their goal is to cut through the noise and offer a straightforward, honest mattress buying experience.

Their first product, simply called “The Mattress,” is a 10-inch hybrid mattress made in the USA with quality materials. It starts at $499, prioritizing affordability and practicality over unnecessary features. The company emphasizes transparency and no-nonsense communication, aiming to empower customers with a hassle-free mattress purchase.

Boring Mattress Construction

We picked each part for comfort and lasting quality, designed to give you great sleep at a fair price. Click below for details.

Comfort layer – 2″ fast-recovery foam

This foam combines the feel of memory foam and latex without the downsides, such as the typical “quicksand” memory foam feeling, body impressions, or overly buoyant latex. The open-cell structure of this foam allows heat to move away from your body while sleeping. It’s breathable, durable, and offers great pressure relief. 3 lb density. CertiPUR-US certified. Often advertised as: Energex™ Temperature Responsive Foam.

Transition layer – 1″ breathable memory foam

Gentle transition from the plush comfort layer on top into the supportive coils below. This is an open-cell memory foam that is breathable and allows heat to dissipate. Helps absorb the energy that comes from the springs. 3.6 lb density. CertiPUR-US certified. Often advertised as: Advanced Memory Foam.

Support layer – 6″ pocket coils & 1” base foam

The coil base offers the right kind of springy energy where you need it most. Provides the foundation that balances out the softer foam layers above. Supports you through the night and also gives that extra push-back, especially when it’s time to get out of bed. 6″ pocket coil system: 560 coils in a queen, 14.75 gauge.

Enhanced edge support

Foam borders that encase the outer perimeter of the coil base. Improves the overall stability of the mattress, preventing sagging or sinking when you sit or sleep near the edge. CertiPUR-US certified.

Fiberglass-free fire barrier

Fire barrier that’s completely fiberglass-free, ensuring your safety and health. Uses a food-grade salt treatment applied to cotton-polyester blended textile. Meets safety standards without introducing harmful chemicals or irritants. 80% cotton, 20% polyester. Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified.

The Parachute mattress joins other bedding companies like Boll and Branch that also recently introduced their own mattress. Boll and Branch makes Fair Trade, organic cotton bedding and their mattresses is made with springs and latex.

POCKETED COILS

Soft and firm coils create comfort, stability and support zones, allowing for proper spinal alignment.

MID WOOL INSULATOR PAD

A layer of sustainable, hypoallergenic, flame-resistant wool protects the microcoils from the pocketed coils.

MICROCOILS

Three tiers of tiny steel coils react individually to pressure, contouring to your body and isolating its every move.

WOOL COMFORT LAYER

Two sheets of pure New Zealand wool naturally regulate body temperature and keep you cozy.

COTTON COVER

Quilted, 100% organic cotton for a soft finish.

My Parachute Mattress Recommendation

Given the specs of this mattress, it should provide an interesting feel. The fact that they don’t use latex or foam is a departure from how most mattresses are made. Normally a mattress is made with at least one of these components for the comfort layer. Parachute makes up for this by using microcoils and wool as a comfort layer which should provide much more breathability.

This mattress is also tufted which eliminates the need for glue to hold the layers together.

parachute mattress tuftingPeople looking for a natural mattress free of both foam and latex should definitely consider this mattress.

Image of SleepEZ Select Sleep Natural Mattress

This mattress is SleepEZ’s most customizable option. It’s made with 100% natural latex and comes in four firmness levels: soft, medium, firm, and extra firm. You can also choose the thickness of each layer and add or remove toppers to create the perfect mattress for you.

In addition to these models, SleepEZ also offers a variety of pillows, mattress toppers, and adjustable bed frames.

The Roma Mattress by Sleep EZ is a latex, foam and organic cotton mattress that gives great support with good pressure relief. This mattress comes roll packed and shipped in a box. A queen size currently retails for $995. What makes this mattress special is that it is a dual sided mattress. Sleep EZ has taken their decades of experience in the mattress industry to develop a medium feel on one side and a firm feel on the other. This greatly increases your chances of loving the mattress but also makes it versatile so that if your preferences change over time, the Roma mattress will still work for you.

Overview of the Roma Mattress

Sleep EZ is a factory direct manufacturer. That means there is truly no middleman. You get factory direct pricing. Also, Sleep EZ has been in the mattress business for over 4 decades so they certainly know how to make a good mattress and will likely be around to honor a 10-year warranty. They are headquartered out of Arizona and have a showroom in Tempe.

The Roma comes roll packed which makes shipping to your door easy. Here’s a picture of it out of the box. You also get a free latex pillow with your purchase. If you order a king, queen or full size, they will also include two free latex pillows.

roma mattress

It will spring to full shape quickly since this is mostly a latex mattress and that means you can sleep on it a few hours after opening.  Here’s a video overview of the mattress explaining some of its benefits.

Construction of the Roma Mattress

This mattress is a dual firmness which means one side is firmer than the other. I really like this concept since it raises the likelihood that you will get the right firmness. And, if your needs change over time, you can always flip the mattress.

Below are the construction details as given by Sleep EZ.

  • 100% Natural Dunlop latex
  • The top 3″ layer is D65
  • The bottom 6″ layer is D85
  • CertiPur-Us foam is a part of the channel quilting.

How Much Does the Roma Cost?

Below are the prices of the mattress as listed on their site:

[table id=39 /]

My Roma Mattress Findings

Normally an all latex mattress won’t have a lot of sink, and if it does, it won’t “hug” you as much as a foam or pillow top mattress would. With the Roma, you get some foam that is quilted into the top layer which gives it a softer and plusher feel.

The picture below is with my 14 lb. bowling ball sinking into the mattress.

roma mattress sinkHere’s a video that illustrates motion transfer on the mattress. This doesn’t have as much motion transfer as an all latex mattress because there is a layer of foam just underneath the organic cotton cover. The latex underneath responds instantly but the foam will absorb a lot of the impact. This leads to less motion transfer and a softer feel.

My Roma Mattress Recommendation

The Roma has quite a bit going for it. It has an unassuming look but it is made with quality material. The durable latex will give this mattress a long life and the channel quilted foam gives you great pressure relief. I tried both sides of the Roma and as a side/stomach sleeper, the medium side felt best. Back and dedicated stomach sleepers will likely prefer the firmer side.

This mattress comes with a 10-year warranty. You have 90 days to try the mattress and if you don’t like it you can return it minus a $99 fee.

Sleep EZ vs. Avocado

Both SleepEZ and Avocado offer high-quality latex mattresses, but they have some key differences that might make one a better fit for you than the other. Here’s a comparison to help you decide:

Construction:

  • SleepEZ: Offers a wider range of options, including all-natural latex, organic latex, hybrid latex, and a budget-friendly Roma latex blend. They also allow customization of firmness levels for various layers in some models.
  • Avocado: Primarily focuses on certified organic latex mattresses with two firmness options (Green and Eco).

Price:

  • SleepEZ: Generally more affordable than Avocado, especially for the all-natural and hybrid models. The Roma and Organic lines are closer in price to Avocado.
  • Avocado: More expensive, particularly for the Green mattress. The Eco is slightly more competitive with SleepEZ’s Organic and Select Sleep lines.

Comfort and Support:

  • SleepEZ: Known for its bouncy and responsive feel due to the latex and potential coil combination in some models. Offers customizable firmness for some of their mattresses, catering to a wider range of preferences.
  • Avocado: Offers a plusher and more conforming feel due to the thicker comfort layer and quilted top. Provides good support for most sleepers, but might not be ideal for those who prefer a very firm mattress.

Sustainability and Certifications:

  • SleepEZ: Offers both non-organic and organic latex options.
  • Avocado: Focused on sustainability and certifications. All mattresses are GOLS, OEKO-TEX, and GOTS certified for organic materials.

Other factors to consider:

  • Trial period and warranty: Both offer generous trial periods (90 days for SleepEZ and 100 days for Avocado) and long warranties (20 years for SleepEZ and 10 years for Avocado).
  • Shipping and returns: Both companies offer free shipping and returns.
  • Customer reviews: Both SleepEZ and Avocado receive generally positive reviews from customers.

Sleep EZ Complaints

To understand Sleep EZ complaints, it’s important to consider both positive and negative feedback. Here’s an overview:

Positive reviews:

  • Comfort and quality: Many customers praise the comfort and support offered by Sleep EZ mattresses, often highlighting natural latex construction and customizable layers as key benefits.
  • Customer service: Positive feedback mentions knowledgeable and helpful customer service representatives.
  • Durability: Reviews often laud the longevity of Sleep EZ mattresses, with some customers reporting using them for over a decade.

Negative reviews:

  • Price: Sleep EZ mattresses tend to be higher-priced compared to some other brands, leading to complaints about value for money.
  • Delivery and customer service issues: Some customers have encountered issues with delayed deliveries or unresponsive customer service.
  • Not suitable for all: While many enjoy the firmness, others find Sleep EZ mattresses too firm or unsupportive.

Common complaints:

  • Price: The higher price point is a recurring complaint, especially for customers comparing against less expensive brands.
  • Firmness: While some adore the support, others find the firmness uncomfortable or unsuitable for their sleeping style.
  • Delivery delays: Occasional complaints mention delayed deliveries or difficulties scheduling delivery windows.
  • Return policy: Some customers report difficulties returning mattresses within the trial period.

Overall:

Sleep EZ mattresses boast many positive reviews praising their comfort, quality, and customer service. However, the higher price and potential firmness might not be for everyone. Researching and comparing with other brands before committing is always wise.

The Awara mattress has been the subject of a few controversies in recent years.

One of the biggest controversies is the company’s return policy. Awara offers a 365-night sleep trial, but customers are required to donate or discard their mattress if they want to return it. This can be difficult and expensive for customers, especially those who live in rural areas or who don’t have a vehicle.

Another controversy is the company’s customer service. Some customers have complained that it has been difficult to get in touch with customer service representatives, and that the representatives have been unhelpful when they do manage to reach them.

Finally, some customers have complained that their Awara mattresses have developed defects after a short period of time. These defects include sagging, lumps, and tears.

Despite these controversies, the Awara mattress is still a popular choice for many consumers. The mattress is well-made and offers good comfort and support. However, it is important to be aware of the company’s return policy and customer service issues before purchasing an Awara mattress.

Here is a summary of the Awara mattress controversies:

  • Difficult return policy: Customers are required to donate or discard their mattress if they want to return it.
  • Poor customer service: Some customers have complained that it has been difficult to get in touch with customer service representatives, and that the representatives have been unhelpful when they do manage to reach them.
  • Defects: Some customers have complained that their Awara mattresses have developed defects after a short period of time.

It is important to note that these controversies are not unique to Awara. Other mattress companies have also been criticized for their return policies, customer service, and product quality. However, it is important to be aware of these issues before making a purchase.

The Awara mattress is a hybrid mattress that combines both foam and coils to provide support and comfort. It is made with natural and organic materials, such as organic latex and cotton, as well as recycled steel coils. The Awara mattress is designed to be supportive and pressure-relieving, while also being environmentally friendly. It is also marketed as a durable and long-lasting mattress that can support a wide range of body types and sleeping positions. My Awara Findings

Being a natural mattress, it will skew firmer than a mattress made with foam. Here’s a picture of how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks on the mattress.

Awara Mattress Sinkage

This mattress has a support system of 9-inch coils for proper alignment. This is a 5 zone pocket coil system which provides support where you need it and will evenly distribute weight. Firmer coils are found along the perimeter to provide better edge support.

Awara Edge Support

Here’s a look inside the mattress where you can see each layer. Aside from the pocket coils and latex, there’s also a layer of wool which helps with temperature regulation.

Inside the Awara

This is what the inside of the top layer looks like.

awara top layer

The dunlop latex has tiny holes in it which are made when the latex is poured into a mold. This provides more breathability.

dunlop holes

The video below shows how each layer reacts inside the mattress. It is on the firmer end of the spectrum so you will sleep “on” this mattress rather than, “in” it.

Awara vs. Avocado

The Awara and Avocado mattresses are both hybrid mattresses made with natural and organic materials, but they have some differences that may influence your purchasing decision.

One of the main differences between the Awara and Avocado mattresses is the firmness level. The Awara is rated as a medium-firm mattress, while the Avocado comes in two firmness levels: medium-firm and firm. This means that the Avocado may be a better option for those who prefer a firmer mattress, while the Awara may be better suited for those who prefer a medium-firm feel.

Another difference is in the construction of the mattresses. The Awara has a simpler construction, with fewer layers than the Avocado. The Avocado has a more complex design, with more layers that include organic latex, wool, and other materials. This may result in a more customized feel for the sleeper and potentially better pressure relief.

The Avocado also offers the option to add a pillow-top for an additional fee, which can provide extra cushioning and comfort. The Awara does not have this option.

In terms of price, the Awara is generally less expensive than the Avocado. However, the Avocado does come with some additional features, such as the option to add a pillow-top and a longer warranty.

Overall, both mattresses are high-quality options made with natural and organic materials. The choice between the Awara and Avocado will largely depend on personal preferences for firmness level and construction, as well as budget considerations.

Awara vs. Birch Mattress

The Awara and Birch mattresses are both hybrid mattresses that feature natural and organic materials, but they have some differences that may influence your purchasing decision.

One of the main differences between the Awara and Birch mattresses is the firmness level. The Awara is rated as a medium-firm mattress, while the Birch comes in two firmness levels: medium and medium-firm. This means that the Birch may be a better option for those who prefer a slightly softer or firmer feel.

Another difference is in the construction of the mattresses. The Awara has a simpler construction, with fewer layers than the Birch. The Birch has a more complex design, with more layers that include organic latex, wool, and other materials. This may result in a more customized feel for the sleeper and potentially better pressure relief.

The Birch mattress also features a natural cotton cover that is free from harmful chemicals and has a soft, breathable feel. The Awara cover is made with organic cotton and wool, but it does not have the same level of certification and testing as the Birch cover.

In terms of price, the Awara is generally less expensive than the Birch. However, the Birch does come with some additional features, such as the option to choose between two firmness levels and a longer sleep trial period.

Overall, both mattresses are high-quality options made with natural and organic materials. The choice between the Awara and Birch will largely depend on personal preferences for firmness level, construction, and budget considerations.

The Awara mattress comes with a lifetime warranty, which is one of the longest warranties in the mattress industry. The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, including sagging greater than 1.5 inches, splits or cracks in the foam, and defects in the zipper or cover.

If a defect covered by the warranty occurs, Awara will repair or replace the mattress at no cost to the owner. The warranty is valid for the original purchaser of the mattress and is non-transferable.

It’s important to note that the warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, or damage caused by misuse or improper care. The mattress must be used with an appropriate foundation or bed frame, and proper care and maintenance must be followed to ensure that the mattress remains in good condition.

My Awara Recommendation

Natural mattresses are not only better for the planet but they usually last longer than foam mattresses. Natural latex is often more durable than foam giving the mattress a longer lifespan. You also get to sleep on this mattress right away and not have to worry about any off-gassing.

If you are primarily a back or stomach sleeper this is a wonderful mattress. If you prefer a firmer mattress and sleep on your side, this is also an excellent choice. For the money, it’s hard to beat the value you get with the Awara Mattress.

Awara vs. Awara Premier

Both Awara mattresses are constructed with similar materials, primarily organic latex, organic wool, and organic cotton, making them excellent choices for eco-conscious sleepers. However, they do have some key differences that might sway your decision towards one or the other.

Here’s a head-to-head comparison of Awara vs Awara Premier:

Choosing the right mattress:

  • For sleepers who prefer a softer, plusher feel with excellent pressure relief, the Awara might be a better choice.

  • If you’re a side sleeper, heavier individual, or prioritize superior motion isolation and edge support, the Awara Premier’s firmer feel and extra latex layer might be more suitable.

Ultimately, the best mattress for you depends on your individual preferences and sleeping style.

Here are some additional factors to consider:

  • Budget: The Awara Premier is more expensive than the Awara.
  • Trial period: Both mattresses come with a 100-night trial period, so you can try them out at home before making a final decision.
  • Warranty: Both mattresses have a lifetime warranty.

Awara Complaints

Awara, like any company, has its share of customer complaints. Here’s a summary of the most common ones I found:

Product:

  • Firmness: The Awara mattress is advertised as a 7/10 on the firmness scale, but many customers find it to be too firm, especially for side sleepers. This can be a problem for people who need more pressure relief or who prefer a softer mattress.

  • Durability: Some customers have reported that their Awara mattress has developed indentations or sagged over time. This is especially concerning given the mattress’s high price point.

  • Smell: Some customers have reported that their Awara mattress had a strong chemical odor when it was first delivered. This odor usually dissipates within a few days, but it can be off-putting for some people.

Delivery:

  • Delays: Some customers have experienced delays in their Awara mattress delivery. This can be frustrating, especially for people who are eager to start using their new mattress.

  • Damage: A few customers have reported that their Awara mattress was damaged when it was delivered. This can be a major inconvenience, as it can take several weeks to get a replacement mattress.

    Image of Awara mattress damaged

Customer service:

  • Difficulty reaching customer service: Some customers have had difficulty getting in touch with Awara customer service. This can be frustrating, especially when you have a problem with your mattress.

  • Slow response times: Once they do get in touch with customer service, some customers have reported long wait times for a response. This can be aggravating, especially when you need help urgently.

It’s important to note that these are just some of the complaints that I found. Not everyone who buys an Awara mattress will have a bad experience. However, it’s important to be aware of these potential issues before you make a purchase.

Here are some things you can do to mitigate the risk of having a negative experience with Awara:

  • Read reviews from other customers before you buy.
  • Make sure you understand the company’s return policy.
  • Be patient when dealing with customer service.

Why is the Awara So Cheap?

The Awara mattress being significantly cheaper than some comparable natural mattresses can be attributed to a few factors:

Material choices:

  • Latex: While Awara uses high-quality Dunlop latex, some luxury natural mattresses might utilize Talalay latex, a rarer and potentially more expensive variety.
  • Organic cotton: Awara uses a blend of organic cotton and polyester in its cover, while some higher-end brands might use 100% organic cotton or other natural materials like wool or hemp.
  • Innerspring units: Awara uses a pocketed coil innerspring, which is common and durable, but some luxury brands might employ individually wrapped, higher-coil-count units for added support and refinement.

Construction and design:

  • Simpler design: Awara’s construction relies on a relatively straightforward layer system compared to some luxury mattresses with more complex layering and intricate quilting techniques.
  • Direct-to-consumer model: Awara cuts out the middleman by selling directly to consumers, eliminating retail markups and associated overhead costs.

Focus on value:

  • Competitive pricing: Awara prioritizes offering a high-quality natural mattress at an accessible price point to make it more widely attainable.
  • Limited customization: Unlike some luxury brands with extensive customization options, Awara offers only one firmness level and limited size options, streamlining production and potentially reducing costs.

It’s important to remember that “less expensive” doesn’t necessarily mean “less quality.” Awara consistently receives positive reviews for its comfort, support, and durability, making it a good value for many people. However, if you prioritize specific features or materials like Talalay latex or 100% organic cotton, you might need to explore pricier options.

Birch Mattress Review – 4 Reasons to Love It

Birch Mattress
Best Natural Mattress 2024
Birch

The Birch mattress is easily the best natural mattress for stomach sleepers. Latex is a much more resilient material than foam and will give you great support all night. This mattress can be a time warp for stomach sleepers in that you probably won't wake up at night wanting to change positions. Latex mattresses are naturally breathable and will sleep cooler than a foam mattress and while they are more expensive, they will also last much longer of course, they are also a better choice for the planet.

We earn a commission if you make a purchase, at no additional cost to you.

The Birch mattress is a hybrid mattress that combines the best of both worlds: the support of a coil system with the comfort of natural materials. The mattress is made with four layers:

  • Organic cotton cover: The cover is made with organic cotton, which is soft and breathable.
  • Natural Talalay latex: The latex layer provides pressure relief and support.
  • Organic New Zealand wool: The wool layer helps to regulate temperature and wick away moisture.
  • Pocketed steel coils: The coil layer provides support and durability.

The Birch mattress is a medium-firm mattress that is suitable for all types of sleepers. It is also a good choice for hot sleepers, as the natural materials help to keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night.

The Birch mattress is an all-natural mattress that is getting rave reviews and selling like crazy. Recently many online brands have come up with a natural mattress offering as it is a growing category. Mattress shoppers are waking up to the fact that mattresses made with quality latex and springs provide durability and comfort that is hard to get in an all-foam mattress. While the prices on average are higher, there is a lot of value to be had with these types of mattresses and the Birch mattress is no exception.

The Birch Mattress comes with a standard 100-night trial where you can try it out in your own home for 100 nights and if you don’t like it for whatever reason, it is a free return. It also has a 25-year warranty against manufacturer defects. Typically mattresses that use latex as the comfort layer skew firmer. The Birch has a pillow top option, the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress, for an extra $400 to make it more suitable for people that want a plush feel and is overall my top pick for a natural mattress.

Overview of the Birch Mattress

I have slept on dozens of natural mattresses with similar construction to the Birch Mattress, Including the Avocado Green Mattress and Naturepedic line of mattresses but each still has a distinct feel. I found the Birch Matress to be a medium firm feel among the spring latex mattresses I have tried and the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress to be a little softer than the Avocado Green Mattress with Pillow Top. Here’s a quick video overview of my thoughts on the Birch Mattress.

Construction of the Birch Mattress

Birch Mattress Construction

Birch Mattress Construction

Below are the construction details of the Birch according to their website.

The Birch Mattress is made with all natural materials which means there is no foam and no off gassing to worry about which is typical when opening a new mattress with memory foam. Instead it has natural latex, some people call this latex foam but it’s basically rubber from a rubber tree plant.

1 Cover – Organic Cotton Cover
The Birch Cover is made using natural, organic cotton. It is designed to be highly breathable with a subtle stretch and soft touch. The Organic cotton cover is the layer closest to your body and so having it be organic and chemical free is reassuring.

2 FR Cover – Wool
Each Birch Mattress uses natural wool fibers with rayon as the fire retardant layer, free of plastics to provide protection.

3 Comfort Layer – Birch Wool
100% all natural & organic Birch Wool provides unparalleled comfort and temperature regulation. Birch Wool is designed to retain shape with a natural elasticity of each fiber.

4 Pressure Relief Layer – Natural Latex
Natural Talalay latex with OEKO-TEX and Rainforest Alliance certifications, provides response to cushion your pressure points while giving support. Our latex is carefully managed to ensure consistency.

5 Support Layer – Individually Wrapped Coils
Hundreds of individual steel coils help to cradle your body and provide support, while also limiting motion transfer. Additionally, the reinforced perimeter coils provide best in class edge support.

6 Base Layer – Wool Batting
100% all natural & organic wool batting to provide stability and durability to the entire mattress.

How Much Does the Birch Mattress Cost?

Below are the current prices of the Birch before any discounts. Right now Birch is offering $200 off these prices on their website. Keep in mind that the Birch Luxe Mattress will cost $400 more for each respective size.

My Birch Mattress Findings

Your Birch mattress will arrive compressed in a box about a week after you place your order. No need to schedule a delivery. Birch will automatically donate 1% of the purchase price to the National Forest Foundation. Some companies will add this as an optional cost but Birch will pay the 1% which is a nice touch. They also purchase carbon offsets!

Birch Box

For an extra $99 you can buy accidental damage coverage through a company called Mulberry. This covers the following:

Accidental stains such as:
● Wine, Pizza sauce, and any other food and beverage stains
● Make-up, Nail Polish, Cosmetics
● Pen, Crayons, Pencils
● Human and Pet bodily fluids

Accidental damages such as:
● Rips, Burns, and Punctures
● Common accidents from children or pets
● Breakage that causes structural breakdown
● Chipping, cracking, and breakage from normal wear and tear

While this is a great option, I think a good mattress protector will address most of these problems and will also keep the mattress hygienic.

This mattress is 11 inches deep and is heavier than a typical foam mattress because latex and steel are heavy so you may need some help getting this setup.

This mattress is ready to sleep on right away. I didn’t have any concern with off-gassing or waiting for the mattress to take shape because the latex will instantly spring to live along with the coil system underneath.

As you can see below, it has great edge support and I attribute that to the quality coil system. Yes, lots of people are still concerned about being able to put their shoes on at the side of their bed and the Birch Natural Mattress and even the Birch Luxe Mattress with extra layer of latex pass with flying colors.

Birch mattress edge support

Here’s how the mattress looks just a few minutes after opening. There’s no need to to wait for it to inflate like a typical foam mattress. It’s ready to use right away.

birch unboxing

You will get some motion transfer due to the spring system but it is a pocket coil system so the coils work independently to keep it to a minimum.  As you can see below there is some sinkage in this mattress and the top layer as a horizontal quilted pattern to give it a slightly more plush feel. I like that it wasn’t stitched too tight either, this allows for maximum contouring with the Talalay layer underneath.

Birch Sink

My Birch Mattress Recommendation

I think the Birch is best suited for back and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers that are seeking a firmer mattress will like it but I think they should consider going with the Birch Luxe or adding the Birch mattress topper. Here’s a photo of me on my side to illustrate contouring.

BIrch Mattress Contouring

My Birch Mattress Recommendation

Birch has made a strong showing with this mattress and it is great to see more choices in the natural mattress category. The Birch mattress retails for $1,449 in a queen size while the Avocado retails for $1,899 in a queen size making the Birch Mattress more affordable than the Avocado. The Birch is a great choice if you want a mattress that is temperature-neutral, does not contain any foam, and made with renewable materials. Back and Stomach sleepers are best suited for this mattress and side sleepers will probably want to add the pillow top. However, I found the Birch to be just slightly softer than the Avocado and slightly firmer than the Awara Mattress.

Keep in mind, you get a 100 nighth sleep trial with the Birch mattress so there’s no risk in trying it out in your own home.

Birch Mattress Complaints

Birch mattresses are generally well-received, but like any product, they have their share of complaints. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • Firmness: The Birch mattress is advertised as a medium-firm mattress, but some customers have found it to be too firm, especially for side sleepers. This can lead to pressure points and discomfort.
    Image of Birch mattress

  • Bounciness: The latex layers in the Birch mattress can make it feel bouncy, which some customers find disruptive to their sleep.
  • Edge support: Some customers have reported that the edges of the Birch mattress are not as supportive as the center, which can make it difficult to get in and out of bed.
  • Smell: Some customers have reported a slight latex smell when they first unbox the Birch mattress. This smell usually dissipates within a few days.
  • Customer service: A few customers have complained about the customer service at Birch, saying that it was difficult to get in touch with a representative or that they were not helpful when they had a problem.

It’s important to keep in mind that everyone has different preferences when it comes to mattresses, and what one person finds uncomfortable another person may find perfectly fine. If you’re considering buying a Birch mattress, it’s a good idea to read the reviews carefully and make sure that it’s likely to be a good fit for you. You can also try out the mattress in a store or order it with a trial period so that you can return it if you’re not happy with it.

Advantages of Latex vs. Foam

When choosing a mattress, the debate between latex and foam often arises. Both offer benefits, but latex holds several advantages over foam mattresses:

Comfort and Support:

  • More responsive: Latex has a bouncy, springy nature, providing better pressure relief and conforming to your body’s curves. Foam, especially memory foam, can feel “sinky” and create pressure points.
  • Temperature regulation: Latex is naturally breathable and sleeps cooler than most foams, preventing overheating and improving sleep quality. Some foams retain heat, leading to discomfort.
  • Durability: Latex mattresses are notoriously long-lasting, often reaching 15-20 years with proper care. Foam mattresses, especially memory foam, tend to sag and lose their shape faster.
  • Allergy-friendly: Latex is naturally hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant, making it a good choice for allergy sufferers. Some foams may harbor allergens or off-gassing chemicals.

Eco-friendliness:

  • Sustainable: Many latex mattresses are made from sustainably sourced, renewable materials like organic sap. Foam often relies on petrochemicals, raising environmental concerns.
  • Biodegradable: Latex is naturally biodegradable, minimizing landfill waste when disposed of. Most foams take hundreds of years to decompose.

Additional factors:

  • Cost: Latex mattresses are generally more expensive than foam mattresses, especially memory foam. However, their durability and superior comfort may justify the initial investment.
  • Odor: New latex mattresses may have a faint, rubbery smell that dissipates quickly. Some foams, especially memory foam, can have a stronger chemical odor that lingers longer.

Birch vs. Avocado

The Birch and Avocado mattresses are both popular hybrid mattresses that are made with natural materials. They have a lot of similarities, but there are also some key differences between the two mattresses.

Similarities

  • Both mattresses are made with a combination of natural latex and pocketed coils.
  • Both mattresses are medium-firm, making them suitable for all types of sleepers.
  • Both mattresses are good for hot sleepers, as the natural materials help to regulate temperature and wick away moisture.
  • Both mattresses are durable and built to last.

Differences

  • The Birch mattress uses Talalay latex, while the Avocado mattress uses Dunlop latex. Talalay latex is softer and more responsive than Dunlop latex.
  • The Birch mattress has a 1.5-inch latex layer, while the Avocado mattress has a 3-inch latex layer. This means that the Avocado mattress provides more pressure relief and cushioning.
  • The Birch mattress has a 7-zone support system, while the Avocado mattress has a 5-zone support system. This means that the Birch mattress provides more targeted support for different parts of the body.
  • The Birch mattress costs slightly more than the Avocado mattress.

Which mattress is right for you?

If you are looking for a mattress that is soft and responsive, the Birch mattress is a good option. If you are looking for a mattress that provides more pressure relief and cushioning, the Avocado mattress is a good option. If you are looking for a mattress with more targeted support, the Birch mattress is a good option. And if you are on a budget, the Avocado mattress is a good option.

Ultimately, the best way to decide which mattress is right for you is to try them both out and see which one you prefer. Both mattresses offer a sleep trial, so you can return the mattress if you are not happy with it.

Happsy Mattress Review

Happsy Mattress
Best Budget Natural Mattress
We earn a commission if you make a purchase, at no additional cost to you.

While Happsy isn’t an ancient company, its journey to becoming a recognized organic mattress brand has been interesting and relatively quick. Here’s a timeline of its history:

2015: The seed is planted. Happsy founders, a group of health and wellness enthusiasts, become frustrated by the lack of truly organic and affordable mattress options. They envision a company that prioritizes both sleep health and environmental sustainability.

2016: The first Happsy mattress is born. Utilizing organic materials like GOTS-certified cotton, latex, and wool, the company launches its flagship mattress, initially targeting the online market.

2017-2018: Building brand and awareness. Happsy focuses on online marketing and customer engagement, building a strong community around the idea of “healthy sleep, happy life.” They garner positive reviews and testimonials, establishing themselves as a reliable organic mattress choice.

2019-2020: Expansion and innovation. Happsy expands its product line, introducing pillows, sheets, and bedding accessories made from the same organic materials. They also partner with environmental organizations and advocate for sustainable practices in the mattress industry.

2021-Present: Continued growth and focus on customer experience. Happsy continues to gain popularity, attracting customers seeking natural sleep solutions. They refine their customer service and offer a 120-night trial period and 10-year warranty on their products.

Key milestones:

  • 2017: Featured in Oprah Magazine’s “O List” of favorite things.
  • 2018: Named a “Best Mattress for Side Sleepers” by Sleep Advisor.
  • 2019: Achieved B Corporation certification, recognizing their commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
  • 2020: Partnered with 1% for the Planet, donating a portion of their sales to environmental causes.

Overall, Happsy’s history is one of rapid growth and dedication to its core values of organic materials, healthy sleep, and sustainability. They continue to innovate and expand their offerings, aiming to make the world a happier place, one mattress at a time.

The Happsy Mattress is a mattress that uses primarily organic materials such at GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) Cotton and GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) latex in addition to a spring system. A queen size Happsy retails for $1,399 which puts it at a very competitive price point for an all-natural mattress. What really sets this apart from the competition is just how many certifications and accolades this mattress has.

Overview of the Happsy Mattress

The Happsy mattress can be ordered direct from their website and will arrive about a week after placing your order. Unlike most online mattress companies, the Happsy will come in multiple boxes That’s because the latex layer cannot be compressed like foam and so will come in a separate box. Below is a photo of what I received for my Happsy mattress plus topper. The mattress will ship to your door though so there’s no need to schedule a delivery.

Happsy Box

The Happsy comes with a 120 night trial where if you don’t like it, you can return it for a full refund. This is still rare with natural mattresses. There aren’t many brands that offer a trial period. Additionally, this mattress comes with a 10 year warranty.

Below is a video overview of the Happsy. I’m sitting on it with the optional latex topper.

The Happsy comes with or without a topper. If you go with the topper option just note that it fits on top of the mattress and is not integrated. This shouldn’t be an issue though when you put sheets over everything.

Happsy Mattress Topper

Below is a photo of how much sinkage you can expect with the mattress topper option. I like a more plush feel and if you do too, then I strongly recommend getting the topper.

Happsy Mattress with Topper

Below you can see how much sinkage you get without the topper. There is a very pronounced difference here.

Happsy Mattress Sinkage

The Happsy is a bouncy mattress because it is springs and latex. Here’s video showing motion transfer on the mattress.

Is the Happsy Mattress right for you?

People seeking out a firm natural mattress will want to go with the Happsy. If you want a plush feel, I strongly recommend adding the latex topper. Latex has a unique feel and is instantly responsive, unlike memory foam which lags. Latex is a more resilient material in that it will last longer than foam so it is a worthwhile investment assuming you like the feel.

The field of online organic / natural mattresses is still limited so it’s welcoming to see the Happsy come in at such a competitive price point.

For reference, a queen Avocado Mattress retails for $1,399 and $1,799 for the pillow top option whereas a queen Happsy is $1,199 and $1,598 for the pillow top.

Both Happsy and Avocado are online mattress companies that offer organic and eco-friendly mattresses. They are both highly rated and have similar features, but there are also some key differences to consider when choosing between them.

Similarities:

  • Both mattresses are made with organic latex and coils.
  • Both are certified organic by GOTS and OEKO-TEX.
  • Both offer a 100-night trial period and a warranty.
  • Both have free shipping and returns.

Differences:

  • Price: Happsy mattresses are slightly less expensive than Avocado mattresses.
  • Firmness: Happsy mattresses are a bit softer than Avocado mattresses.

Which mattress is right for you?

If you are looking for a more affordable mattress, Happsy is a good option. If you are looking for a more luxurious mattress with a longer trial period and warranty, Avocado is a good option. If you are a side sleeper, you may prefer the softer Happsy mattress. If you are a back or stomach sleeper, you may prefer the firmer Avocado mattress.

here’s a comparison of the prices of Happsy, Avocado, and Birch mattresses:

Happsy:

  • Queen size: $1,399
  • King size: $1,599
  • California King size: $1,599

Avocado:

  • Queen size: $1,799 (Green Mattress) or $1,399 (Eco Organic Mattress)
  • King size: $1,999 (Green Mattress) or $1,599 (Eco Organic Mattress)
  • California King size: $1,999 (Green Mattress) or $1,599 (Eco Organic Mattress)

Birch:

  • Queen size: $1,995 (Luxe) or $1,495 (Natural)
  • King size: $2,195 (Luxe) or $1,595 (Natural)
  • California King size: $2,195 (Luxe) or $1,595 (Natural)

As you can see, Happsy is the most affordable option, followed by Avocado’s Eco Organic Mattress and then Birch. Avocado’s Green Mattress and Birch’s Luxe Mattress are the most expensive.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind when comparing prices:

  • These are just the base prices for the queen-size mattresses. The price of a mattress can vary depending on the size, firmness, and any additional features you choose.
  • Happsy and Avocado offer financing options, which can make the cost of the mattress more manageable.
  • All three companies offer free shipping and returns.

The Essentia Tatami Hybrid mattress is the first spring and latex mattress offered by Essentia. They label it their, Essentia Crossover™. There’s a reason that hybrid mattresses are trending and that’s because they give you the benefits of spring with the benefits of foam or in this case, latex. Essentia uses a patented natural memory foam formula that actually feels like foam instead of latex which gives it a completely different feel from the competition. What you get is a mattress that is lighter than their other offerings, comes shipped in a box and is relatively affordable for an Essentia mattress.

Overview of the Essentia Mattress

You can order your Essentia directly from their website. This mattress comes with free shipping and a 120 day trial period. Just keep in mind that Essential will charge you a transportation fee which according to their website is 9% of the cost of the mattress.

Here’s a video showing how the Essentia works Pay attention to how the latex reacts. It is slower to recover than typical latex which was unexpected.

Construction of the Essentia Tatami Hybrid Mattress

tatami c

Below are the construction specifications of the mattress from their website.

No Chemical Flame Retardants

Made in Essentia’s GOLS and GOTS certified organic factory, there are no chemical flame retardants used on any Essentia product.
  • Organic Cotton Cover

This GOTS certified organic cover features a full zip making it easy to remove and washable.
  • Comfort Layer

1.5” Essentia patented natural memory foam on top of 0.5″ natural support latex foam. This one of a kind comfort core offers contouring pressure relief and support as your body transitions to the pocketed coil support core.
  • Support

8″ individually pocketed support coils made of recycled steel, on top of 0.5″ base cotton padding for zoned ergonomic support that offers reduced motion transfer and edge support that won’t bottom out.

What Makes Essentia different from other Latex Hybrid Mattresses?

Essentia is 1 of only 2 latex foaming companies in North America. That means they make the latex foam in America and have complete control over feel and quality. Essentia imports rubber tree sap and then make foam from that. It takes significantly less space than importing finished foam and therefore cuts down on fuel consumption during transportation.

How Much Does the Essentia Tatami Cost?

Here are the prices of the mattress as of this writing.

[table id=88 /]

My Essentia Tatami Findings

Unboxing the mattress was a little difficult. The mattress is not folded so it comes in a longer box. Instead of being able to simply pull it out of the box, I had to tear the box open from the side. It was a small inconvenience but did take extra time and effort. Once you get it out of the box and on your bed, you will notice that the mattress has an easily accessible cover that can be washed but I would recommend using a mattress protector.

tatami zipper

As you can see the natural memory foam layer is softer than traditional latex even though it is an all-natural material. This is what really sets the mattress apart from the competition.

tatami sink

The Tatami has adequate edge support because of the coil system underneath. This is a zoned coil system that has perimeter edge support.

tatami sitting

Here’s a shot with my 14 lb. bowling ball to further illustrate sinkage. There is just a little extra fabric in the cover to allow the material to fully conform to your body.

tatami sink2

Here you can see how it conforms for side sleepers. This mattress feels very similar to a foam and spring hybrid without all the chemicals. If I didn’t know this was latex I would have it pegged as foam.

tatami contouring

Here you can see how the natural foam will leave an impression. I put my hand directly on the natural foam layer for about 5 seconds.

squish1

As you can see it leaves a distinct impression that recovers after about 4-5 seconds.

My Essentia Tatami Recommendation

Essentia is the only company that I know of that makes a natural memory foam. This is no gimmick. Out of the hundreds of mattresses I have reviewed, none have been able to achieve this feel with all-natural materials.  I highly recommend this mattress for side sleepers that want great contouring and excellent pressure relief without the drawbacks of foam which are primarily off-gassing and the environmental impact.

Why Are Essentia Mattresses So Expensive?

Essentia mattresses tend to be more expensive than many other mattresses on the market for a variety of reasons:

  1. Materials Used: Essentia mattresses are made from natural and organic materials, like natural latex. The process to harvest, process, and produce organic latex is more labor-intensive and costly than synthetic or blended materials.

  2. Certifications: Essentia mattresses come with various certifications, like GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). These certifications are indicators of high-quality and organic materials but come with additional costs associated with ensuring compliance and getting certified.

  3. Manufacturing Process: Unlike many mainstream mattresses that are mass-produced in factories, Essentia mattresses have a more hands-on and meticulous production process to ensure quality.

  4. Health and Environmental Benefits: Essentia mattresses emphasize non-toxic, VOC-free, and environmentally-friendly benefits, which appeal to consumers who prioritize health and environmental sustainability. These features can add to the cost due to the rigorous standards and testing involved.

  5. Durability and Longevity: Higher quality materials and construction often result in longer-lasting products. Investing in durable materials and processes can increase initial costs, but the idea is that the product will last longer, providing better value over time.

  6. Marketing and Branding: Like any premium brand, part of what you’re paying for is the brand reputation, marketing efforts, and the promise of a particular kind of experience or quality associated with that brand.

  7. Special Features: Some Essentia mattresses come with added features, such as customization options, zoned support, or specific designs intended for certain sleep preferences or issues.

  8. Direct-to-Consumer Business Model: While bypassing middlemen and selling directly to consumers can sometimes result in cost savings, it also means the company bears the entire overhead cost of showrooms, customer service, and other business operations, which can influence pricing.

  9. Research and Development: Companies that prioritize innovation and invest in R&D to continuously improve their products might incorporate those costs into the product pricing.

  10. Satisfaction Guarantees and Warranties: Offering generous trial periods, return policies, or warranties can influence the final price point, as companies anticipate potential returns or warranty claims.

It’s worth noting that while Essentia mattresses might be pricier than some alternatives, many people find value in investing in a quality mattress that aligns with their health, comfort, and environmental priorities. When considering any expensive purchase, it’s essential to weigh the benefits against the cost to determine if it’s the right choice for you.

Naturepedic EOS Mattress Review – A Fully Custom Mattress

Naturepedic EOS Review

Naturepedic was founded in 2003 by Barry A. Cik, a board-certified environmental engineer with over 30 years of experience. Cik was inspired to start the company after he had difficulty finding a safe and healthy mattress for his first grandchild.

At the time, most mattresses were made with synthetic materials and harmful chemicals, such as flame retardants and polyurethane foam. Cik wanted to create a mattress that was made with natural and certified organic materials, and that was free of harmful chemicals.

Naturepedic was the first company to offer certified organic mattresses. The company’s mattresses are made with a variety of natural materials, including organic cotton, organic wool, and organic latex. Naturepedic mattresses are also free of flame retardants, polyurethane foam, and other harmful chemicals.

Naturepedic mattresses are certified by a number of third-party organizations, including the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and the MADE SAFE® certification.

Naturepedic is a family-owned and operated company. The company is headquartered in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and has manufacturing facilities in both the United States and Canada.

Naturepedic is committed to providing its customers with the safest and healthiest mattresses possible. The company is also committed to environmental sustainability. Naturepedic uses recycled materials in its packaging and products, and the company offsets its carbon emissions by planting trees.

Naturepedic has won numerous awards for its mattresses, including the “Best Organic Mattress” award from Good Housekeeping magazine and the “Best Mattress for Back Pain” award from Health magazine.

Naturepedic is a leading manufacturer of certified organic mattresses. The company is committed to providing its customers with the safest and healthiest mattresses possible, while also minimizing its environmental impact.

The EOS Mattress from Naturepedic is a 12-inch organic mattress that can be fully customized. That means you can choose to go with springs and latex or if you have a latex allergy, go the all spring route. Naturepedic will substitute the top latex layer with micro-coils that provide great cushioning and support underneath the thick mattress cover.

The EOS is a bit more expensive than many of the online competitors but it is a quality mattress inside and out. There aren’t that many organic spring mattresses out there that are this customizable. This is the only natural mattress I have reviewed where you can substitute the latex layer for a spring layer to avoid allergy issues.

After you order your mattress it should arrive in about 7-10 days. It comes in multiple boxes as seen below.

Naturepedic Boxes

You get assembly instruction which shows you how to set up the mattress.

Naturepedic Assembly Instructions

Each box is labeled so you know which one to open first.

Naturepedic Box Label

Below is a video overview of the mattress after it has been assembled.

The EOS mattress doesn’t have a free trial like most online brands but they do have a 90-day comfort guarantee where if you don’t like the feel of your mattress, they can switch out some of the components. Here are the details of the comfort guarantee from their website.

90 Day Comfort Exchange Policy – Swap any 3″ comfort layer within 90 days of your purchase and only pay for shipping. Just fill out a simple form at naturepedic.com/layerswap and order your new layers. Then, schedule a pickup for your original layers using a prepaid return label, and you’re all set. You’ll be issued a full refund once we receive your original layers back (so long as they’re received back within 90 days of your original invoice date). It’s that easy! Visit the EOS FAQ for more information.

Return Policy – We offer a 90-day money back guarantee, less ALL actual shipping charges (including those associated with any promotions) so long as your order was placed directly with Naturepedic. Orders placed with other retailers follow the return policy of those retailers. Orders must be received in a clean undamaged condition. My Naturepedic EOS Findings

Right from the beginning, this product screams quality. The boxes are clean and well labeled and the contents are packaged neat and secure.

Here’s the mattress cover out of the box. This is a thick cover that not only keeps everything together, it provides a nice padded surface for sleeping. There was also no smell to this. Sometimes an all organic cover can smell like a sheep due to the wool batting but this one didn’t smell at all.

Naturepedic Mattress Cover

Even the zipper is very high quality. This is important because the mattress is designed to hold all the materials tightly together which means that you sometimes need to pull hard on the zipper. Having a quality zipper makes the job easier and less likely that you will break it.

Naturepedic Zipper

For my review I had a soft and firm configuration on a queen size mattress. This allowed me to test both ends of the firmness spectrum. I also opted for a latex layer instead of the microcoils so I can’t really speak to how the microcoils will feel.

Below is a video of me dropping a bolwing ball on the soft side of the mattress.

And here is the same bowling ball on the firm side of the mattress.  I found the soft side had a bit more bounce.

Here’s another view for comparison that shows how much the ball sinks on each side. Below is the firm side.

Naturepedic Firm Side

And here is the soft side.

Naturepedic Soft Side

As you can see there is a significant difference between the soft and firm versions. Of course you can go with a medium firm as well.

Despite being a spring and latex/coil mattress, it handles motion transfer very well. That’s because not only the latex and microcoil systems are separate pieces, the base pocket coil system is two separate units as well. As you can see in the picture below.

Naturepedic Coil System

My Naturepedic EOS Recommendation

Naturepedic is a leading natural mattress manufacturer. They have all kinds of certifications that are a testament to the quality of their product. Their products are made by Amish craftsmen in their factory in Ohio. So, from the beginning, you are getting a quality product that should last a long while.

I found the soft configuration of the EOS to be a great feel for my preferences. It’s great for side sleepers. Stomach and back sleepers will want to go for the medium and firm configurations.

Hybrid design blends the support of coils with the pressure relief of Talalay latex

Winkbeds has expanded its offering of mattresses to include Hybrid, Foam and now an Eco-friendly option called the Eco Cloud. This is an all-natural mattress made with steel springs, natural latex, wool and organic cotton. There are many natural mattresses on the market with similar construction but the Eco Cloud has a feel all its own. In keeping with the Winkbeds tradition, it offers a more luxurious feel where you get more cradling than the competitors. But you will pay a bit more for the premium. A queen size currently retails for $1,799 which is considerably more than the budget-friendly Awara at $1,199.

Overview of the Winkbed Eco Cloud

Here’s a video overview of the Eco Cloud where you can see how it performs and peek inside the mattress to see how it is constructed.

Construction of the Winkbeds Eco Cloud

Winkbeds Eco Cloud Construction

Here are the construction details as listed on their website along with a picture (ab0ve) to show you the actual layers.

ORGANIC COTTON COVER & NEW ZEALAND WOOL

A soft quilt cover made from 100% organic cotton and sustainable New Zealand wool ensure you sleep cool, clean and dry.

4″ TALALAY LATEX COMFORT LAYER

4″ of premium Talalay is textured and fabricated into targeted comfort layers to provide firmer support for the low back & lumbar, and softer support in the shoulders & hips, for an unparalleled zero-pressure experience.

5 ZONE INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED INNERSPRING SUPPORT SYSTEM

EXTRA-EDGE™ ANTI-SAG SUPPORT SYSTEM

Our proprietary innerspring support core is firmer and more supportive along the edges, allowing you to sleep edge to edge without any sag.

How Much Does the Winkbed Eco Cloud Cost?

The cost of the mattress varies depending on the size and other features you select, such as a foundation or adjustable base. Here are the current prices for the WinkBed EcoCloud mattress:

  • Twin: $1,599
  • Twin XL: $1,799
  • Full: $1,999
  • Queen: $2,199
  • King: $2,599
  • California King: $2,599

Please note that these prices are subject to change and do not include any discounts or promotions that may be available at the time of purchase. Additionally, the prices listed above are for the mattress only and do not include any accessories or add-ons.

My Eco Cloud Findings

I found this mattress to be just a bit on the softer end of the spectrum compared to others with similar construction. I attribute that mostly to the 4 inch Talalay latex layer at the top. Here you can see how much sinkage is produced with my 14 lb. bowling ball.

Winkbed Eco Cloud Softness

Here’s another picture showing me pushing into the mattress with a good amount of force. I just want to illustrate how much give you can achieve with the mattress.

Winkbed Push

As I mentioned in the video, this mattress doesn’t retain much heat and that’s typical of a natural mattress like this one. If you are coming from a traditional spring mattress, you shouldn’t notice a difference in sleeping hotter.

I’m glad Winkbeds incorporated Talalay latex into the top layer as it gives it a nice plush feel without too much sinkage. This mattress is bouncy without a lot of motion transfer. They use a proprietary spring system with zones across the mattress to even you out and provide support for your hips making this a great choice for any type of sleeper, even stomach sleepers. The perimeter coils are firmer so you also get great edge support and won’t feel like you are going to roll off the mattress.

Finally, Winkbeds did a great job with the fabric on this mattress. It’s not stitched too tight like others I have tried. That means there is more material to allow the latex and springs to work. Some mattresses that are stitched too tight don’t offer as good of contouring as this one.

The WinkBed Eco Cloud vs. Avocado Mattress

Both are known for their eco-friendly and sustainable materials. Here’s a brief comparison between the two:

  1. Construction: The WinkBed EcoCloud is a hybrid mattress that combines latex, pocketed coils, and wool. On the other hand, the Avocado mattress is available in two options – a hybrid that combines latex, pocketed coils, and wool, and an all-latex mattress.
  2. Firmness: Both mattresses offer different firmness levels to choose from. WinkBed EcoCloud comes in medium-firm, while Avocado offers firmness options ranging from medium-firm to plush.
  3. Support: Both mattresses provide excellent support to the body, thanks to their hybrid construction that combines foam, latex, and coils.
  4. Price: The WinkBed EcoCloud is slightly more expensive than the Avocado, with prices ranging from $1,599 to $2,499, while the Avocado mattress costs between $899 to $2,199.
  5. Eco-friendliness: Both mattresses are made with eco-friendly materials, such as organic cotton, wool, and natural latex. However, the Avocado mattress is certified organic by GOTS and GOLS, making it a more sustainable and environmentally friendly option.

Overall, both the WinkBed EcoCloud and Avocado mattresses are high-quality options that offer excellent comfort and support. It ultimately comes down to personal preference and budget when deciding between the two.

The Winkbed EcoCloud vs. the Birch Mattress

  1. Construction: The WinkBed EcoCloud is a hybrid mattress that combines latex, pocketed coils, and wool. The Birch mattress is also a hybrid but uses organic cotton, Talalay latex, and individually wrapped coils.
  2. Firmness: The WinkBed EcoCloud comes in medium-firm, while the Birch mattress offers two firmness options: medium-firm and plush.
  3. Support: Both mattresses provide excellent support to the body due to their hybrid construction that combines foam, latex, and coils.
  4. Price: The WinkBed EcoCloud is slightly more expensive than the Birch, with prices ranging from $1,599 to $2,499, while the Birch mattress costs between $1,049 to $1,899.
  5. Eco-friendliness: Both mattresses are made with eco-friendly materials, such as organic cotton, wool, and natural latex. However, Birch has a more significant focus on sustainability, with certifications from GOTS, GOLS, and OEKO-TEX.

EcoCloud vs. Awara Mattress

The WinkBed EcoCloud and Awara mattresses are both excellent options with unique features and benefits. Here’s a brief comparison between the two:

  1. Construction: The WinkBed EcoCloud is a hybrid mattress that combines latex, pocketed coils, and wool. The Awara mattress is also a hybrid but uses Dunlop latex, individually wrapped coils, and organic cotton.
  2. Firmness: The WinkBed EcoCloud comes in medium-firm, while the Awara mattress is firm.
  3. Support: Both mattresses provide excellent support to the body due to their hybrid construction that combines foam, latex, and coils. However, the Awara mattress may be too firm for some sleepers and may not provide enough pressure relief.
  4. Price: The Awara mattress is slightly more affordable than the WinkBed EcoCloud, with prices ranging from $999 to $1,799. The WinkBed EcoCloud costs between $1,599 to $2,599.
  5. Eco-friendliness: Both mattresses are made with eco-friendly materials, such as organic cotton and natural latex. However, the WinkBed EcoCloud has a more significant focus on sustainability, with certifications from GOTS, GOLS, and OEKO-TEX.

Overall, both the WinkBed EcoCloud and Awara mattresses are excellent options that offer comfort and support while being environmentally conscious. It ultimately comes down to personal preference and budget when deciding between the two. If you prefer a medium-firm mattress with a focus on sustainability, the WinkBed EcoCloud may be the better choice. If you prefer a firm mattress with a lower price point, the Awara mattress may be the better option.

WinkBed Ecocloud for Sex

the WinkBed EcoCloud is a good option for sex. It has a hybrid construction that combines latex, pocketed coils, and wool, which provides a good balance of support and comfort that can enhance sexual activity. The latex layer can offer responsive bounce and motion isolation, while the pocketed coils provide a sturdy base for a stable surface. Additionally, the breathable wool layer can help regulate temperature and wick away moisture, making it a comfortable surface to sleep and engage in physical activity. Overall, the WinkBed EcoCloud’s construction can provide a comfortable and supportive surface for sexual activity.

Talalay vs Dunlop

  1. Production Process: Dunlop latex is the original latex production method and is made by mixing natural latex sap with curing agents, pouring the mixture into a mold, and baking it. Talalay latex is a newer production process that involves the same initial steps as Dunlop but adds an additional step of vacuum sealing the mold and flash freezing it before baking it. This process makes Talalay latex more uniform and consistent than Dunlop.
  2. Density: Dunlop latex is denser and firmer than Talalay latex due to its production process. It has a heavier feel and is often used as a support layer in mattresses. Talalay latex is lighter and more buoyant due to the aeration process that gives it a more consistent cell structure. It is often used as a comfort layer in mattresses.
  3. Comfort: Both Dunlop and Talalay latex provide excellent comfort and support. However, Talalay latex is often preferred for its superior pressure relief, thanks to its more consistent cell structure and buoyancy.
  4. Durability: Both types of latex are known for their durability and can last for many years. However, Talalay latex may be more resistant to compression and sagging over time due to its more consistent structure.

Overall, both Dunlop and Talalay latex can be excellent options in a mattress, depending on your preferences and needs. Dunlop latex may be preferred for its density and firmness, while Talalay latex may be preferred for its superior pressure relief and buoyancy.

My Eco Cloud Recommendation

The Eco Cloud costs more than some of the competing brands but to me, that’s not a deal-breaker. For a few hundred dollars more you get a mattress that is made in the USA, crafted in a factory in Wisconsin by people that have been at their jobs for decades and really know their craft. The end result is a quality mattress that will hold up over time.

This mattress comes with a 120-night trial where you can sleep on it at home for 120 nights and if you don’t like it, for whatever reason, it’s a free return. They also offer a lifetime warranty which means as long as you own the mattress, Winkbeds will replace it if it is found to be defective. They also have a comfort exchange where you can exchange the mattress after the trial expires and buy a different Winkbed at 50% off.

The Environmental Impact of Mattresses: A Deep Dive into Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Choices

mattresses in a landfill

The global push towards environmental sustainability has brought to light the significance of making eco-conscious decisions in various aspects of our lives. One area that has gained increasing attention is the environmental impact of mattresses. With millions of mattresses reaching the end of their lifespans each year, landfills are being burdened with these bulky, non-biodegradable waste items. In response, there is a growing demand for eco-friendly mattress options that align with consumers’ environmental values. In this article, we will provide a brief overview of the environmental concerns surrounding mattresses, emphasize the importance of understanding the sustainability of different mattress types, and explore the rising interest in eco-friendly alternatives.

Traditional innerspring and memory foam mattresses typically have a lifespan of 7 to 10 years. Once they reach the end of their functional life, these mattresses pose a significant disposal challenge. It is estimated that around 20 million mattresses are discarded annually in the United States, occupying valuable landfill space and releasing harmful greenhouse gases as they decompose. While recycling and repurposing programs for mattresses do exist, the complex construction and composition of these products make it difficult to fully recycle or break down their components, resulting in many still ending up in landfills.

Materials Used in Mattress Production and Their Environmental Impact

Synthetic materials, such as polyurethane foam, petroleum-based foams, and memory foam, are prevalent in mattress production. The manufacturing processes of these materials are energy-intensive and frequently involve the use of hazardous chemicals, which can negatively impact the environment. Furthermore, synthetic foam mattresses are known to emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through off-gassing, potentially compromising indoor air quality and posing health risks to consumers.

Natural materials, including latex, cotton, and wool, are often regarded as more eco-friendly alternatives for mattress production. These renewable and biodegradable materials offer a more sustainable choice for the environment. However, it is crucial to consider the environmental repercussions of farming practices, such as pesticide use and land degradation, when assessing the overall sustainability of these materials.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Mattress Alternatives

Organic mattresses, manufactured from materials that are grown and processed without the use of harmful chemicals, present an environmentally friendly option for consumers. To ensure the authenticity of an organic mattress, look for certifications such as the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) or the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS).

Plant-based memory foam and bio-foam options incorporate renewable resources like soy and castor oil, which replace a portion of the petroleum-based ingredients typically found in foam mattresses. These eco-friendly alternatives can decrease the environmental impact of foam production while maintaining the comfort and support of conventional memory foam.

Some mattress manufacturers are adopting recyclable and biodegradable materials in their products. By utilizing materials that can be easily recycled or that decompose more rapidly in landfills, these companies are actively working to mitigate the environmental impact of mattress disposal.

How to Choose an Environmentally Friendly Mattress

When searching for an eco-friendly mattress, evaluate the materials used, the manufacturing process, and the disposal options for the product. Seek out certifications and third-party testing to verify that the mattress meets environmental standards. Be cautious of greenwashing tactics, where companies employ misleading marketing strategies to create the illusion of their products being more sustainable than they genuinely are.

The Benefits of Choosing an Eco-Friendly Mattress

As more consumers prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility, the demand for eco-friendly mattresses has surged. Choosing an eco-friendly mattress comes with several benefits, both for the environment and for the individual consumer. Here are some of the most notable advantages of opting for a green mattress:

  1. Reduced Environmental Impact: By selecting a mattress made from sustainable, renewable, or recyclable materials, you can help reduce the strain on natural resources, minimize waste, and lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with traditional mattress production and disposal.

  2. Healthier Sleep Environment: Eco-friendly mattresses typically contain fewer harmful chemicals and have reduced off-gassing issues compared to conventional mattresses. This leads to a healthier sleep environment, as there is less exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may impact indoor air quality and pose potential health risks.

  3. Hypoallergenic and Antibacterial Properties: Some eco-friendly materials, like natural latex and organic cotton, have hypoallergenic and antibacterial properties, offering added benefits for allergy sufferers and promoting a cleaner sleeping surface.

  4. Improved Durability and Longevity: Sustainable materials, such as natural latex, often provide greater durability and a longer lifespan than their synthetic counterparts. This means that an eco-friendly mattress may need to be replaced less frequently, further reducing the environmental impact of mattress disposal.

  5. Support for Sustainable Practices: When you purchase an eco-friendly mattress, you are supporting companies that prioritize sustainability and environmentally responsible practices. This consumer support can drive positive change within the industry, encouraging more manufacturers to adopt eco-friendly methods and materials.

  6. Enhanced Comfort and Support: Many eco-friendly mattress options, such as plant-based memory foam and organic latex, offer exceptional comfort and support. This means that you don’t have to sacrifice a good night’s sleep when making an environmentally conscious choice.

Final Thoughts

Each year, a staggering number of mattresses end up in landfills, contributing to waste and environmental concerns. In the United States alone, it is estimated that approximately 20 million mattresses are discarded annually. These bulky, non-biodegradable items take up valuable landfill space and release harmful greenhouse gases as they decompose.

The time it takes for a mattress to decompose in a landfill can vary significantly, depending on the materials used in its construction. On average, it is estimated that a traditional innerspring or memory foam mattress can take between 80 to 120 years to fully break down. Factors that can influence the decomposition rate include the presence of synthetic materials like polyurethane foam and the landfill conditions.

Considering the environmental impact of mattresses is essential for consumers aiming to make sustainable choices. By comprehending the distinctions between traditional and eco-friendly mattress options, you can make informed, earth-conscious decisions and contribute to a greener future while enjoying a restful night’s sleep.

The decomposition time for an organic mattress is generally shorter than that of a traditional mattress, due to the use of natural and biodegradable materials. However, the exact time it takes for an organic mattress to decompose can still vary, depending on factors such as the specific materials used, landfill conditions, and local climate.

Organic mattresses typically incorporate materials like organic cotton, wool, and natural latex, which tend to break down more quickly than synthetic materials. While it is difficult to provide an exact timeframe for decomposition, organic mattresses are generally considered a more environmentally friendly option due to their use of renewable resources, biodegradable materials, and reduced reliance on harmful chemicals. This is why recycling and repurposing organic mattresses, when possible, remains a crucial step in reducing the overall environmental impact of mattress disposal.

Here’s a video overview of the Real Bed and what I really think of it. This is a heavy mattress, weighing 139 lb.s in a queen size, so I recommend having 2 people to set up, you can go it alone but it’s much easier with help, especially if you need to get it up a flight of stairs, there’s also an option to purchase white glove delivery for an extra $199 where they will set it up in the room of your choice and haul away the packaging. Once you open this mattress, it’s ready to sleep on right away.

Construction of the Real Bed

While this is not an organic mattress, it is made with all-natural material. Cotton, wool, latex, steel springs and some bamboo-derived rayon. It measures 11.5 inches thick so putting sheets on it will be no problem.

My Charles P. Rogers Real Bed Findings

There are no fancy new foams or springs in this mattress, just quality materials, and craftsmanship. While the Real Bed is the Charles P. Rogers bed in a box offering, they offer the same quality you will find in their other mattresses. I am partial to mattress companies that make their own mattresses and certainly this one is no exception given their long track record and consistently high marks from more traditional review publications like Consumer Reports.

Starting with the organic cotton cover, you will find that the mattress is hand-tufted to eliminate the need for glue to hold the latex in place. This gives the mattress a more consistent feel and will prevent you from rolling towards the middle toward your partner at night.

real bed tufting
This is a medium-firm mattress. While it feels plush with the latex and tufting, you don’t sink into the mattress all that much because the latex springs to life quickly making it easy to change positions. It also means the mattress is breathable and won’t trap heat like a foam mattress.

pushing on the real bed

This mattress also has excellent edge support. I attribute that to both the springs and latex. Even some hybrid foam mattresses can have poor edge support if they add too much foam to the top layer. That isn’t the case with this mattress.

sitting on the real bed

Here you can see how much by 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress. It sunk in about half an inch.

real bed sink

For side sleeping, you get really good lower back support. My hips also felt supports and the mattress didn’t bother my shoulders. As long as you have a pillow with the proper height, should pain shouldn’t be an issue. If you prefer a really plush mattress, you can add the Real Bed Topper which is a 2.5-inch thick pad with latex and nano springs. I have never come across a mattress topper with springs and this would certainly keep the bed from becoming too squishy.

real bed side sleeping

This mattress also performed well for stomach sleeping. If you are a dedicated stomach sleeper you may want something a little firmer though.

real bed stomach sleeping

This mattress really excelled at back sleeping. I don’t normally sleep on my back but if I had to, I would choose this mattress. The Real Bed can be used on an adjustable base. No need for a box spring either, in the picture below it is on a bed from West Elm that has wooden slats.

Final Thoughts on the Real Bed by Charles P. Rogers

For the money, this is one of the best values for a natural mattress. Aside from it being all-natural, it’s just plain comfortable. It comes with a 100-night trial, 25-year warranty with free shipping and returns. The Real Bed strikes the right balance with springs and latex. It has just the right amount of bounce without going overboard with the use of latex. I could tell immediately that There’s a reason why this company has lasted so long and there’s no doubt in my mind that the Real Bed will be a strong player in the bed in a box category for a long time to come.

Organic latex is made from the sap of the Hevea brasiliensis tree, which is native to South America. The sap is tapped from the tree without harming the tree, and then it is processed into latex. Organic latex is a natural material that is hypoallergenic and biodegradable. It is also a good insulator, and it can help to reduce pressure points.

My Harvest Mattress Recommendation

The Harvest is a decent value but I still prefer the Avocado mattress. It’s the original and the brand is growing and there are many more accessories as well as the fact that they give back to the planet.

Harvest Mattress vs. Avocado Mattress

Both the Harvest Mattress and Avocado Mattress are popular eco-friendly mattress options. Here are some key differences between the two:

  1. Materials: Both the Harvest Mattress and Avocado mattress use organic cotton, natural latex foam, and steel coils in their mattress construction. They are basically the same mattress along with both being hand tufted, and both mattresses are free from harmful chemicals and synthetic materials.

  2. Firmness options: Harvest Mattress comes in two firmness options – medium and firm, while Avocado Mattress offers three firmness options – plush, medium, and firm. They both have an budget friendly model, a vegan option but Harvest also makes double sided mattresses that will exted the life of the mattress because you can flip it to wear more evenly.

  3. Price: Harvest Mattress is generally more affordable than Avocado Mattress. However, Avocado Mattress offers a higher-end luxury version many more layers and luxury materials that will have a more plush feel but at a considerably higher price.

  4. Trial and warranty: Both companies offer similar trial and warranty periods. Harvest Mattress offers a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty, while Avocado Mattress offers a 365-night sleep trial and a 25-year warranty.

Ultimately, the choice between Harvest Mattress and Avocado Mattress will come down to personal preference and specific needs. It’s always a good idea to read reviews, compare features, and consider factors such as budget, firmness preference, and eco-friendliness when making a decision.

Harvest vs. Birch Mattress

Harvest Mattress is a newer brand that offers a wide range of mattresses made from natural materials like organic cotton, wool, and latex. Their mattresses are designed to provide excellent support and comfort while also being environmentally friendly. Harvest Mattress also uses sustainable and non-toxic materials in their manufacturing process.

Birch Mattress, on the other hand, is a more established brand that has been around since 2018. They specialize in organic mattresses made from materials like natural latex, wool, and cotton. Birch Mattress is known for its high-quality, durable mattresses that offer excellent support and comfort. They also use eco-friendly materials and practices in their manufacturing process.

Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid Mattress Review

Bloom mattres

The Bloom Hybrid mattress is an all natural offering from Brooklyn Bedding.  I found this mattress to have a nice, plush feel. Because the comfort layer is latex instead of foam it will be easier to move around on even though you will sink in a fair amount. Because this mattress uses premium materials like Talalay latex, organic cotton and Joma wool, the price point is going to be higher but the mattress will be more durable and will have a longer lifespan. A queen size currently retails for $1,799 before discounts.

Overview of the Bloom Hybrid

The Bloom Hybrid is made in the USA out of the Brooklyn Bedding mattress factory in Arizona. This company is known for fast shipping times so don’t be surprised if you get your mattress delivered in less than 5 days. This mattress comes with a 120-night trial where you can test it out in your home to make sure its the right fit. If not, returns are free. Just a few years ago this was unheard of with a natural mattress due to the cost but competition has sort of forced them to offer it.

How Much Does the Bloom Mattress Cost?

Below are the prices of the mattress as of this writing. Typically they offer a 20% discount which is shown in the table.

[table id=65 /]

Construction of the Bloom Hybrid from Brooklyn Bedding

Bloom Mattress Inside

Below are the construction details from their site. I always like to cut open the mattress so you can see the layers up close.

  • Sustainably sourced Joma Wool™ and organic cotton are combined in a plush top cover, providing exceptional breathability and moisture wicking…naturally.
  • A 3” top layer of Talalay latex delivers a unique buoyant quality that relaxes muscles and relieves tension, lifting away the pressures of the day while you sleep. Made from natural Talalay rubber, Talalay latex is certified Oeko-Tex class 1 safe.
  • An 8” base of up to 1,189 individually encased Quantum™ Edge coils delivers ultimate pressure point relief while decreasing motion transfer.
  • A 1” high density foam base adds durability to the mattress while reinforcing individually encased coils as they compress.
  • Made in the USA

My Bloom Hybrid Findings

When reviewing hybrid latex mattresses like the Bloom it’s important to compare them to mattresses of similar construction. Compared to the Awara, the Bloom Hybrid is a considerably softer mattress. That is in part because it does not have the tufting found in the Awara. I found the Bloom hybrid to be just a little bit softer than the pillow top version of the Avocado.

Here’s a picture of how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the Bloom.

Bloom Hybrid SInkage

This mattress will have some motion transfer since it has springs. It will also have more bounce than a typical hybrid because it has both springs and latex.

I found that I also sank into this mattress considerably more than the Awara and Avocado. Again, due to lack of tufting and the cover is not as tightly stitched to the rest of the mattress.

Bloom Cover

My Bloom Mattress Hybrid Recommendation

This mattress is very competitively priced given the construction. What I first noticed when I received the mattress was how heavy it is. Latex is not cheap or light but it’s durable and has a very unique feel. I think they hit the mark with feel on this mattress to provide a universal appeal.

If you are sensitive to foam smells or are just looking for a more natural alternative without breaking the bank, the Bloom Hybrid is a great choice. In comparison, the Bloom all latex, this mattress is going to have a more traditional feel due to the spring system and will probably be a better fit for most.
