Eli and Elm Side Sleeper Pillow: Must-Have for Best Sleep

Eli and Elm Side Sleeper Pillow

[Tagline]

Eli & Elm Profile

Eli & Elm entered the bedding world in January 2019 with a goal to create high quality bedding for the average sleep enthusiast. Based in New Haven, CT, their name is an homage to Eli Whitney—the inventor of the cotton gin; and Elm City—the home of Whitney before its name was changed to New Haven. Three Connecticut men were inspired by Eli Whitney’s innovation with the plant, so they took to improving the world of cotton bedding, with aspiring dreams to make the bed a better place for sleep. There hasn’t been much innovation in the textile industry, so Eli & Elm made it their mission to create luxurious and durable sheets for affordable prices. Their work with researchers and engineers has paved the way for eco-friendly advancements in the field while also focusing their resources on making fair trade products that are ethically sound.

IMG 2854 scaled

Eli & Elm sent me their king-size organic cotton Side Sleeper pillow. The large cushion was rolled up and stuffed inside its long, white shipping box.

IMG 2843 scaled

I pulled it out and cut away the bag and tape to reveal a gold and ivory pillow shaped like half of a fingertip bandage.

IMG 2849 scaled

The quilted pillow fabric is extremely soft, and the filling is especially plush and squishy. The front and back of the pillow have “Organic” written stylistically across the pleats, and are joined by a gold suede band.

IMG 2860 scaled

The seams are hidden and seem durable enough to withstand even the roughest of sleepers. I really appreciate the placement of the zipper, as many zippers that go from corner to corner often get jammed with the interior fabric. When I unzipped the portal to coziness, I was met with tiny noodles of cotton stuffing, which Eli & Elm explains can be removed to adjust height, support, and cushiness for a fully customizable experience.

Side Sleeper Construction

Eli & Elm’s pillow design is not only customizable for all sleepers, but it’s specially designed to benefit side-sleepers. The unique shape gives the head and neck the support they need, which is often not provided by flat pillows. I have two flat pillows that have lost every ounce of support and comfort that they once had, so this has been a long time coming. I couldn’t find any information on how I was supposed wash it, and I’ve had issues in the past with damp pillows, so I gave it an extra hour for good measure totaling 120 minutes on low heat. Once out of the dryer, I could start enjoying the pillow without having to smell the factory in which it was made.

IMG 2857 scaled

The pillow fabric is comprised of 37% organic cotton, 2% spandex, and 61% polyester; and the fill is made of 75% latex and 25% polyester fiber. Eli & Elm claim that their cotton fabric is breathable, hypoallergenic, eco-friendly, and temperature modulating, so I was intrigued to try it alongside Eli & Elm’s Cooling Whitney Collection. Unlike the Whitney Collection, the Side Sleeper does not utilize Phase Changing Materials in its construction, so experiencing the cooling effects side-by-side would give me an ideal comparison test. In the end, it really did do what they said it would.

IMG 2861 scaled

My Side Sleeper Findings

The pillow is heavy and kind of unwieldy—if you hold it with one hand, you feel like it will stretch into oblivion, but if you hold it with two hands, it still figures out a way to spill over your arms. When moving the pillow, it feels as though it’s caught somewhere between liquid and solid despite very clearly just being a fabric pillow stuffed with little squishy noodles. When placed on an immovable surface—like a bed—the pillow takes on a whole different personality. The noodles compress under the weight of your head allowing the half-fingertip-bandage shape to conform to your neck. The Side Sleeper feels like a luxury neck pillow made of pizza dough, and I love it. It can be hard to find a pillow that meets all of your greatest expectations, but Eli & Elm got it right this time. No matter which way I slept or rolled, the pillow was always there, giving me the best cushion experience for all sides of my head. It was both supportive and forgiving, which makes it a perfect pillow for literally anyone.

IMG 2913 scaled

When used simultaneously with Eli & Elm’s Whitney Collection, I found myself in one of the most breathable and temperature consistent sleeping environments ever. Sure, getting into the bed was a bit chilly (my house thermostat is pretty consistently set between 55F and 62F morning and night), but once inside, all the high tech cooling fabric started doing its thing and the sheets and pillow quickly adjusted to my body temperature. After a few days of usage, I was curious what the other side of the pillow felt like since the undersides of pillows are always colder—this one was very cold. In a sleepy daze, I strangely couldn’t tell if the pillow was cold because it was damp or just cold—turns out by perching the Side Sleeper on top of my other pillows (covered with the Whitney pillowcases), I created a kind of black hole for heat in between the two cooling fabrics.

IMG 2919 scaled

My Side Sleeper Recommendation

Eli & Elm’s Side Sleeper is a magnificent pillow for sleeping, to which I have found no comparison. That said, pillows are generally very versatile and practical, but I don’t think the Side Sleeper shares those traits. Due to its shape, it wouldn’t make for a back or head cushion while playing cards or writing your next novel, and its weight and Jell-O-esque feel make me think traveling with it would be a hassle—its true element is on a bed. The only thing that I’m unsure about at this moment is the stiffness of the pillow. This of course is just a personal problem, because Eli & Elm recommends removing or adding noodles as you go to get the perfect firmness, which I haven’t gotten around to doing. So for all of you prospective buyers and readers out there, if you’re looking for a pillow that is more squishy than firm, make sure you extract some noodles first before deciding it’s not for you! In the off chance the Side Sleeper is just not for you, Eli & Elm has a 45-day risk free trial period so you never have to invest in something you don’t actually like. For me? This is a real keeper and paces miles ahead of the comparable $100 solid bamboo pillow I got online.

Saatva Solaire

Luxurious customizable mattress with 50 precise firmness options

Idle Sleep is out of business, but the Saatva Solaire is a better choice

Idle Sleep, a startup that sold hybrid mattresses, has gone out of business. The company’s website is down and its social media accounts have been inactive for several months.

While Idle Sleep’s closure is unfortunate, it’s not surprising. The mattress industry is highly competitive and there are many well-established brands that offer high-quality mattresses.

If you were considering buying an Idle Sleep mattress, I recommend that you check out the Saatva Solaire instead. The Solaire is a hybrid mattress that is made with high-quality materials and construction methods. It also offers a number of features that the Idle Sleep mattress didn’t, such as:

  • Adjustable firmness: The Solaire allows you to adjust the firmness of the mattress to your liking, using a remote-controlled pump. This is a great feature for couples who have different sleep preferences.
  • Cooling technology: The Solaire uses a variety of cooling technologies to keep you comfortable at night. These technologies include a gel-infused memory foam comfort layer and a breathable cover.
  • Pressure relief: The Solaire is designed to provide pressure relief for your back and joints. This is important for people who suffer from chronic pain.
  • Long sleep trial and warranty: Saatva offers a 365-night sleep trial and a 15-year warranty on the Solaire mattress. This gives you plenty of time to try the mattress and make sure it’s right for you.

If you’re looking for a high-quality hybrid mattress, the Saatva Solaire is a great option. It’s made with high-quality materials and construction methods, and it offers a number of features that the Idle Sleep mattress didn’t.

The Idle Sleep Air is a mattress made layers of latex and foam and an air chamber that can be inflated with a remote control to adjust the firmness of the mattress. This gives you the ability to adjust the firmness whenever you like without having to change out layers or add a mattress topper. You can also buy a dual chamber system so that each side of the mattress can have a different firmness. Currently, a queen size retails for $2,524 before any discounts which is very affordable for what you get. And on top of that, it comes with a 120-day trial.

Overview of the Idle Sleep Air

Your Idle Air mattress will arrive in a box like the one below. It’s hard to believe but you get lots of mattress layers and technology all rolled into a compact box.

Idle Air Box

Here’s what it looks like right out of the box.

Idle right ouf of the box

The remotes are safely packaged so they don’t come loose during shipment.

idle air remote

With a dual chamber system you get a remote for each side. They are wired but long enough so you don’t have to strain to reach them.

idle air remotes When you open the box you will see that the mattress looks about halfway inflated. That’s because of the other foam and latex layers. The next step is to plug it in and start adding the air.  I received the dual chamber model so you would need to inflate each chamber separately.

Construction of the Idle Sleep Air Bed

The top layer is a quilted fabric with batting to give it a pillow top feel. Below that is a layer that you can rotate to make it softer or firmer. One side is memory foam and the other is a latex foam.

top layers

You also get edge support along the perimeter of the mattress with high-density foam. That way you can use all the bed without feeling like you will roll off it.

How Much Does the Idle Sleep Air Cost?

Below are the current prices of the mattress before any discounts.

My Idle Sleep Air Mattress Findings

What makes this mattress interesting is the fact that you can adjust your firmness by inflating or deflating the air chambers. Personally, I think if you sleep with someone else, you should get the dual chamber option because you can then adjust each side to the perfect firmness level.

To give you an idea of the range of firmness, here’s a video illustrating how the mattress inflates going from basically 0 to firm.

Here’s a side view of me laying on the mattress and lowering the firmness.

Aside from the air chamber making the mattress softer or firmer. You can also adjust the top comfort layer by unzipping the cover and flipping it over. There are actually two zipper systems so when you unzip the top layer you won’t disrupt the other layers beneath.

idle air zippers

Here’s a picture of the top layers with mattress unzipped. The top layer is the latex layer.

idle layers

Here’s a clip of how these layers react.

Underneath this is the second part of the system. To access it, you need to unzip the other zipper. You can see a convoluted layer of foam and underneath that are the air chambers. You can also see the edge support foam

idle layer 2

Below the convoluted foam layer is the air chamber. What I particularly like about this construction is that the air chamber is basically taking the place of a spring system. Since there are multiple comfort layers above this, it doesn’t feel like you are sleeping on an air mattress.

air chamber

There’s very little motion transfer with this mattress. If you go with the dual chamber system, there’s even less. Here’s a video illustrating motion transfer using my 14 lb. bowling ball. This was done on the same chamber.

It’s a little hard to illustrate firmness on this mattress because the padded top layer makes the bowling ball sink in quite a bit already but here’s what it looks like at maximum firmness.

sinkage idle air

And here’s what it looks like on the other side of the mattress where I turned it all the way down to the lowest setting.

idle air low setting

My Idle Air Mattress Recommendation

Overall this mattress is an incredible value. Considering that you can change your firmness with a remote without having to switch out layers is a huge benefit. On top of that, being able to customize the firmness of the components inside the mattress is unique and adds more customization beyond just adding or taking away air. Best of all you get a 120 day trial with this mattress. Since this is a relatively big investment it is good to have the peace of mind knowing you can return it if things to don’t work out.

I recommend this mattress for couples that have considerably different firmness preferences. It is also good for people that may need to change the firmness of their mattress frequently due to health issues or other conditions.

Primary Goods Sheets: Stunning Quality, Effortless Comfort

primary goods sheets

[Tagline]

IMG 2644 scaled

Primary Goods sent me a 5-piece set of 100% percale sheets in their special February color, “Lilac Snow.” As of this writing, you can get a queen size set for $179. The sheets come with a 100 night trial which means you get to try them in your bed for 100 nights and if you aren’t happy with them, you can return them for a refund. Just bear in mind that you will pay a $19.99 return processing fee for any product that is washed or used. You also need to pay for return shipping.

The sheets came in a pretty nondescript brown shipping box, and when I opened it I was not met with sleek designs or extravagant packaging—I was a bit surprised considering how many other sets come in over the top wrappings.

IMG 2631 scaled

Honestly, it was actually kind of refreshing not to have to choose between keeping the packaging to admire like a piece of modern art, and tossing it out. Primary Goods kept it simple with a shipping box and five fabric baggies also known as self packaging, each containing one piece of the percale puzzle. I disassembled the set and started looking over my new purple sleep treasure.

IMG 2660 scaled

Primary Goods Construction

One thing I did not account for was how close “Lilac Snow” is to pink. Contrasted on a bright white backdrop, “Lilac Snow” has the slightest discernible hint of purple on their website. In real life, under non-studio lighting, it is actually undeniably ballet slipper pink. I know this for a fact because I spent a few hours freaking out over my perception of colors before asking my roommates and sister what color they see. We all had a flashback to the dress that broke the internet in February 2015—the dress is clearly white and gold in that photo, but I digress.

IMG 2640 scaled

The consensus was unanimous: these sheets are not any perceptible shade of purple or violet. Since lilac is a pretty ambiguous color—lilac flowers can range from light red to dark purple and everything in between—I give it a pass with the disclaimer that unless you live in a photography studio or a glass house in sunny southern California, the sheets will be pink. Don’t get me wrong, pink is a great color, but purple is my favorite. On a side note, the sheets are surprisingly shiny (despite Primary Goods calling them “matte”), which made photographing the true colors very challenging, so please keep that in mind as you scroll through the photos.

IMG 2664 scaled

I unfolded the sheets and analyzed them closely. Initially the sheets felt a bit rougher than any old set of cotton sheets but Percale is a different weave than sateen and they will be more breathable, also given the weave, percale sheets have a sort of crisper crinkly feel that some people crave.

IMG 2678 scaled

My Primary Goods Findings

I followed the laundry directions and washed the sheets in warm water followed by a low heat tumble dry and there was no shrinkage, but they didn’t dry. I had to run the sheets through the dryer a second time to eradicate the dampness. During both sessions they were the only objects in the dryer, but for some reason they needed two hours to dry on low heat, which was frustrating. Pro tip, this happens with comforters and all sorts of bedding. It’s often best to dry the fitted and flat sheet separately so they don’t become entagnled which prolongs the dryng process.

IMG 2667 scaled

The corners of the fitted sheet may look like a pink Victorian era dress, but they sure do grip mattress corners well, even if it does seem a bit like overkill. If your sheets are prone to coming loose at night, these will ensure they stay in place.

IMG 2666 scaled

I spread the flat sheet out on my bed, set up the duvet, and began testing their signature snapping feature.

IMG 2684 scaled

If you go with their signature snapping system to attach the flat sheet to the duvet just keep in mind that this is meant to work as a system. If you use the flat sheet on its own, it will cover the top of the bed but it is not big enough to make the hospital corners.

IMG 2686 scaled

The goal of the snap system is to keep you from losing your top sheet an night. The primary purpose of the top sheet is to keep your duvet clean so you don’t have to launder it as often. If you’re disciplined enough to launder the fitted top sheet this is a good system.

IMG 2688 scaled

My Primary Goods Recommendation

Honestly, my first night sleeping took some getting used to. You need to get used to the feel of the top sheet being in sync with the duvet. After a few washed these sheet should soften up well and what you get for the money is a good value.

Sleep Paralysis: Must-Have Insights on This Risky Condition

Infographic Sleep Paralysis Decoded

Sleep is one of the most mysterious phenomena in living beings, and it has intrigued since the dawn of civilization. Although science has been able to understand much of the processes in living beings, sleep is still mostly a mystery. Much of this is because we aren’t conscious when sleep happens and it’s impossible to tell what happened while we were sleeping after we wake up. For years, scientists have been studying sleep and associated phenomenons like sleep paralysis and have also managed to figure out a lot about what happens in the brain and the body when a person is asleep. However, some aspects of sleep are yet to be demystified, and one of them is the REM stage.

The final of the four stages of sleep is called the Rapid Eye Movement stage because the brain is active in this phase and the eyes move rapidly behind closed eyelids. Many interesting things happen during this stage. Dreams, for instance, have intrigued both scientists and the common man for the longest time, and they happen during the REM phase. When dreams happen, the brain is active, but the body is still inactive, in a state of paralysis, to prevent it from acting out the dreams. Another mysterious phenomenon is linked to the REM stage, and this is sleep paralysis.

Decoding Sleep Paralysis?

Have you ever woken up from sleep, only to find that you couldn’t move or talk or get out of bed for a few moments? That’s what is sleep paralysis. In ancient times, it was linked to supernatural creatures.  When the episode occurs, everyone thought that is supernatural creature had possessed him. This made sleep paralysis a very scary phenomenon for everyone.

The condition was also termed a type of nightmare. But after a lot of scientific research, it is now known that the condition is nothing but being mentally aware while still asleep. This can happen either during falling asleep or waking up. The REM stage is the most complicated phenomenon associated with sleep, mainly because the brain becomes active and is conscious enough to experience life-like visions in the form of dreams, but the body is still inactive. Although the cause of sleep paralysis has been learned, the reason behind it still remains unclear.

What Causes Sleep Paralysis?

Although science is still unsure about the exact cause of sleep paralysis, global folklore has had explanations for centuries. These include visits from supernatural beings like ghosts, witches, and demons. In recent cases in the US, sleep paralysis has also been called “alien abductions.”

These associations to supernatural activity make sense because during sleep paralysis many people experience pressure on the chest, the feeling of being secretly watched by an intruder, and other hallucinations. However, none of these actually happen. These are only sensory perceptions because the brain is still in the REM phase and the body is inactive. This means the person has woken up when he is not supposed to be awake.

Because sleep paralysis is a complex phenomenon, it has been widely studied by scientists. The most common cause is waking up in the middle of REM stage sleep. When a person wakes up when the REM stage is still active, he is able to see, hear and feel because the brain is awake, but is unable to move because the body has not yet come out of the REM stage. Although this sounds scary, it lasts only a few seconds because the body realizes that the brain is already awake and slowly begins to move again.

In the number of studies conducted over the years to find out more about sleep paralysis, the most common cause has been identified as sleep deprivation. When a person is deprived of the normal sleep cycle, he is more likely to wake up in the middle of the REM stage. Usually, we are supposed to wake up at the end of the REM stage, but if we don’t have a normal sleep cycle, the possibility of waking up in the middle of the REM stage increases. This is when sleep paralysis is most likely to happen.

Sleep paralysis is also common in narcolepsy patients, according to sleep experts at the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center at the Montefiore Health System, New York. Because narcolepsy is the result of a disrupted sleep cycle, sleep paralysis is more likely to happen, in combination with hallucinations. Napping also increases the possibility of sleep paralysis because it disrupts the natural sleep pattern. If you oversleep while napping, you may experience sleep paralysis.

Young age also is likely to be a cause behind sleep paralysis. The Mayo Clinic says that sleep paralysis is most common in the age range of 10 and 25. This means even children can be affected by this disorder and also get very frightened.

In people with anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, or panic disorder, sleep paralysis is very likely, according to a 2017 report published by the National Institutes of Health. Since these emotional disorders result in nightmares and insomnia, they also increase the possibility of sleep paralysis.

According to a 2011 study by Pennsylvania State University, nearly eight percent of the general population experienced sleep paralysis. Among them, about 31 percent of people suffer from mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD. Although this was a small study, it does go a long way in proving that mental disorders are associated with sleep paralysis to a certain extent. However, this doesn’t mean that every person with anxiety or PTSD will get sleep paralysis.

Genetics may also have a role to play in sleep paralysis. According to the findings of a 2015 sleep study involving 862 twins and siblings by the University of Sheffield, genetics could influence sleep paralysis is some people.  Although this study was also preliminary, the researchers added that it does provide a basic idea about the involvement of circadian rhythms in sleep paralysis.

Symptoms of Sleep Paralysis

Those who have experienced sleep paralysis find it to be scary. It almost seems like you were having a stroke, where your entire body was paralyzed, and you couldn’t move or speak. These are the most important symptoms of sleep paralysis. People are unable to move any part of their bodies or speak right after waking up or right when falling asleep. According to the Mayo Clinic, this can last a few seconds or up to a minute. Along with paralysis of the body, people may also experience tightness or pressure on their chest, as well as a choking feeling.

Hallucinations are also not uncommon during an episode of sleep paralysis. This is because the brain is still in a dream-state and hasn’t fully woken up. These visions or hallucinations can be an extension of an ongoing dream. Aside from these, there are no other symptoms of sleep paralysis. The person is awake and aware during sleep paralysis episodes and can later recount the experience.

Sleep Paralysis Prevention and Treatment sleep paralysis treatment

There are no short or long term effects of sleep paralysis. Hence, there is no treatment for it. What can be treated is an underlying cause that could be contributing to sleep paralysis. Rather than treatment, this is an effort to prevent sleep paralysis.

Sleep experts suggest that medical help is not required after only one rare episode of sleep paralysis. What is important is to check your sleep hygiene. Often, sleep paralysis is a sign of sleep deprivation.  If you have experienced sleep paralysis only once or twice, you should make sure to get enough sleep daily, limit caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and all other drugs, and stop using electronics at bedtime.

Medical help might be needed to treat underlying causes if the above doesn’t help and sleep paralysis episodes keep becoming more frequent. A sleep specialist is a person to see if you have recurrent sleep paralysis episodes.

Although sleep paralysis is not dangerous, if you experience extreme episodes, you may be prescribed a short course of antidepressants. This helps to treat any underlying stress or mental disorder that might be the reason.

Sleep experts suggest that during a sleep paralysis episode, it is important to remain calm and keep telling yourself that it will soon pass. There’s not much else that you can do. No one has ever remained in a sleep paralysis forever, so it’s important to understand that it’s only temporary and pass very soon. However, this is possible only when you’ve experienced an episode or two before. The first time, such episodes can really be frightening.

Risk Factors of Sleep Paralysis

Sleep paralysis is a fairly common phenomenon and can affect anyone in any age group. It is most likely to begin between age 14 and 17 years and decreases after the age of 30. A person is more likely to experience it if there someone in the family with the disorder.

Some of the risk factors are:

  • Bipolar disorder
  • Anxiety, depression or PTSD
  • Sleeping on your back
  • Excessive stress
  • The use of certain medications

Interesting Facts About Sleep Paralysis

In the past, before science could explain everything, it used to be believed that ghosts and demons caused sleep paralysis by pinning people down by sitting on their chest. However, these visions were mere hallucinations, a common symptom of sleep paralysis. In fact, most people who report seeing apparitions actually had sleep paralysis.

People also use different methods to shake themselves out of the episode. Some wiggle their toes while others cough. However, it isn’t possible to wake oneself up from an episode of sleep paralysis, until it passes.

If you, or someone you know has episodes of sleep paralysis, share the following infographic. It lucidly explains what sleep paralysis is, what causes it, and finally how to treat sleep paralysis.

Buy Mattress Online: The Ultimate Effortless Guide

Best place to buy a mattress

If the idea to buy mattress online feels daunting, you’re not alone. With a flood of mattress manufacturers offering an overwhelming array of choices, finding the perfect mattress can indeed be perplexing. The online mattress industry has surged to over $20 billion, attracting both established brands and new entrants, all vying for your attention with innovative technologies and unique selling points. While this competition expands your options for a quality mattress, it also makes the selection process significantly more time-consuming and challenging.

Advantages of Buying a Mattress Online

Gone are the days when mattress shopping required exhausting trips to multiple stores. The shift to online shopping has revolutionized the purchasing process, making it faster and more convenient than ever. Instead of spending a weekend driving from showroom to showroom, you can now browse a multitude of options from the comfort of your home or even while at the office. Within days, your new mattress can be delivered directly to your doorstep—often unboxed and installed for you—eliminating the hassle of heavy lifting and transportation logistics.

Wider Selection When You Buy Mattress Online

One undeniable benefit of buying a mattress online is the vast selection available. You can explore thousands of mattresses without setting foot in a single store. Online retailers often operate without physical showrooms, allowing them to offer a broader range of products. Whether you’re in the market for a twin, queen, memory foam, or natural latex mattress, you’ll find nearly every possible configuration and price point at your fingertips. This convenience means that you can shop, compare, and purchase all in one go, saving you precious time and effort.

Easy Price Comparisons

When shopping for a mattress, price transparency is essential. In traditional showrooms, you often need to navigate between different locations to gather quotes and compare options, a process that can be both tedious and time-consuming. However, when you decide to buy mattress online, you can effortlessly compare prices across various brands and products from the comfort of your home. Simply visit the websites of different mattress companies, browse their offerings, and choose the most affordable and suitable option for your needs.

Sleep Trial Policies

One of the most significant advantages of online mattress shopping is the sleep trial offered by many companies. Unlike physical showrooms, which don’t offer such an option, online retailers allow you to test your mattress in the comfort of your home. If it doesn’t meet your expectations during the trial period—usually around 100 nights—you can return it for a full refund, often with the company handling all logistics for pickup. This assurance makes buying a mattress online a risk-free experience.

Weighted Blanket: Must-Have for Effortless Sleep Relief

Best weighted blankets 2019

Best Weighted Blankets 2020

As sleep disorders become increasingly prevalent, innovative sleep products continue to emerge, aiming to improve our nightly rest. One such product that has gained immense popularity over the past few years is the weighted blanket. Unlike traditional blankets, weighted blankets are significantly heavier, typically weighing between 5 and 30 pounds. They have become sought-after sleep accessories for both adults and children, purported to alleviate various sleep-related issues.

Understanding the Weighted Blanket

Weighted blankets feature a unique design, filled with materials such as glass or plastic beads to provide their heft. Some models even include additional padding made from polyester fibers to enhance comfort. The outer layer is commonly made from breathable fabrics like cotton, flannel, or wool. While they resemble regular blankets, the substantial weight sets them apart and contributes to their calming effects. The underlying principle is that the pressure from the weight stimulates the release of serotonin and dopamine—hormones associated with happiness and relaxation—thereby aiding in the treatment of conditions like autism, anxiety, and depression.

Various mental and behavioral challenges can lead to restlessness, disrupting sleep. Weighted blankets work by reducing that restlessness and promoting a sense of calm, encouraging users to relax and fall asleep more easily. However, choosing the right weight is crucial. If a blanket is excessively heavy, it may cause discomfort and hinder restful sleep, especially for children. Thus, handling and testing the blanket before purchasing is highly recommended.

How Does a Weighted Blanket Work?

Weighted blankets utilize a phenomenon known as ‘grounding,’ where moderate pressure is applied to the body, facilitating a deeper connection with the sleeping surface. This sensation can prompt the release of calming hormones, easing tension and promoting a restful night’s sleep.

To maximize the benefits of a weighted blanket, it’s essential to select one tailored to individual needs. Generally, it is ideal for adults to choose a blanket weighing approximately 5% to 10% of their body weight. For children, a blanket that is about 10% of their body weight is appropriate. However, it’s essential to consult with a physician regarding weighted blanket use for children under eight years old, as it may pose safety risks.

Who Should Avoid Weighted Blankets?

Although many people experience benefits from weighted blankets, they are not suitable for everyone. Individuals with respiratory issues, circulatory disorders, or claustrophobia should exercise caution and consult a healthcare professional before using one. The weight of a blanket may aggravate these conditions, leading to discomfort or anxiety.

Benefits of Weighted Blankets

Despite potential risks, weighted blankets offer numerous advantages for many users:

1. Reduced Cortisol Levels: After a stressful day, elevated cortisol levels can impede sleep. Weighted blankets have been shown to lower these levels, fostering a sense of calm and aiding both falling and staying asleep.

2. Increased Serotonin Production: These blankets can enhance serotonin levels, promoting alertness while preventing daytime drowsiness. They also contribute to the production of dopamine and oxytocin, often termed “happiness hormones.”

3. Minimized Sleepwalking: For children prone to sleepwalking, the weight of the blanket can help keep them grounded, reducing instances of nocturnal wandering.

4. Calming Effect for Special Needs: Children with autism and ADHD often struggle with sleep. Weighted blankets can promote relaxation, improve melatonin production, and potentially enhance cognitive function.

With a burgeoning market, numerous manufacturers have begun producing their versions of the weighted blanket. However, not all deliver the same benefits. Here are some of the best weighted blankets available in 2020.

Microfiber Sheets: Stunning Choice for Effortless Comfort

Microfiber Sheets Are they any good

Microfiber Sheets: Are They Any Good?

Is it that time of year when you’re contemplating new sheets? Perhaps your old set has seen better days—stains, tears, or just plain wear and tear call for a refreshing change. While many of us indulge in high-end pillows and comforters, we often overlook the importance of quality bed sheets. After all, we spend nearly one-third of our lives enveloped in fabric, making the choice of bedding crucial to our comfort and well-being.

When it comes to bed sheets, cotton and microfiber sheets are two of the most popular materials. Each offers distinct benefits, and which one is right for you largely depends on individual preferences and needs. This article will explore the pros and cons of microfiber sheets compared to cotton, providing insights to help you make an informed decision.

What Are Microfiber Sheets?

Microfiber sheets are made from synthetic fibers, typically polyester or nylon, that are woven together to create a soft, luxurious feel. Over the years, they’ve gained immense popularity for their affordability and practical benefits. However, are they truly the best option for your bed?

Comfort and Feel of Microfiber Sheets

When it comes to comfort, many prioritize the tactile experience of their sheets. Here, microfiber sheets shine with their silky, soft texture. If you’re someone who enjoys a cozy, smooth feel against your skin, you’ll likely fall in love with these sheets. They’re perfect for those who toss and turn, as they allow for easy movement without tangling up.

In contrast, if you prefer a crisp, fresh feeling, you might gravitate towards cotton. Cotton’s breathable nature provides a classic feel that many find comforting, especially during warmer nights.

Warmth and Insulation

Microfiber is particularly appealing for those who tend to feel cold at night. Its ability to retain body heat makes it an excellent choice for winter months. However, if you’re prone to night sweats, cotton is your go-to option, as it is more breathable and effective in wicking away moisture. While microfiber sheets boast stain resistance, they can be challenging to clean if spills aren’t addressed promptly. Cotton, by comparison, is less forgiving when it comes to stains but offers easier maintenance in the long run.

Durability: How Do Microfiber Sheets Hold Up?

Durability is a significant factor when selecting bed sheets, and both materials present unique advantages and disadvantages. Low-quality options, whether microfiber or cotton, generally have a short lifespan. While poor-quality microfiber sheets may tear after a few washes, high-quality options made from either material prove much more resilient.

Cotton sheets, however, may face issues like pilling and fading over time. Microfiber, on the other hand, retains its vibrant colors even after repeated washes. Lower-grade cotton tends to thin out, while high-end microfiber sheets can deteriorate suddenly, leading to unexpected tears.

Airflow and Breathability

When comparing airflow, percale-woven sheets (a type of weave known for breathability) are worth mentioning. While premium cotton sheets may be heavier and denser, they often outshine microfiber in terms of air circulation. However, microfiber sheets, typically lighter, still manage to trap air for warmth but may lack the refreshing breeziness that cotton provides.

Cost Comparison: Microfiber vs. Cotton

When it comes to pricing, microfiber sheets generally come at a lower cost compared to their cotton counterparts. The key to finding quality in both materials is the thread count for cotton and the denier rating for microfiber. Simply put, higher thread or denier counts often mean a better quality sheet, but microfiber will usually have a budget-friendly edge.

If you’re outfitting multiple beds or seeking a more economical choice, microfiber sheets offer exceptional value without compromising comfort.

Maintenance Made Simple

One of the most appealing aspects of microfiber sheets is their low-maintenance nature. They’re less likely to shrink than cotton and dry faster, making them a practical choice for busy lifestyles. Cotton, while lovely, can require a longer drying time and is known for potential shrinking after the first wash. If laundry day is a frequent hassle for you, opting for microfiber can alleviate some of that stress.

Conclusion: Are Microfiber Sheets Right for You?

Both microfiber and cotton sheets have their respective advantages, but the best choice ultimately boils down to personal preference. Microfiber sheets are fantastic for budget-conscious shoppers who still want quality, comfort, and easy maintenance. If you’re considering a new set, the Mezzati Luxury Bed Sheet Set is a highly recommended option.

This set is not only affordable but also crafted from premium-quality brushed microfiber, offering a soft, silky experience. The hypoallergenic material, combined with resistance to wrinkles and fading, makes it an ideal choice for any bedroom. Available in various sizes and stylish colors, it’s perfect for those who prioritize both luxury and practicality. Invest in comfort and style with Mezzati—you won’t regret your choice in microfiber sheets!

Melatonin Sleep: Best Guide to Effortless Restful Nights

How Long Does Melatonin Last

Melatonin has grown in popularity in recent years as a natural sleep aid. According to a report by Grand View Research, the global melatonin market size was valued at $720.5 million in 2020 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.8% from 2021 to 2028.

The growing popularity of melatonin may be due to several factors, including the increasing prevalence of sleep disorders, the rise of natural and alternative medicine, and the ease of access to melatonin supplements.

[Tagline]

With sleep disorders rising around the world with every passing day, people are more interested in sleep aids than ever. Sleep aids come in various forms. They come as liquids and as pills, and sometimes even as a supplement in the form of powder. To make sleep aids easily accessible, most of them are available over-the-counter and don’t even require a prescription. Sleep aids used to be an easy way for people to commit suicide, but modern sleeping pills no longer have the potential to kill. If you overdose on sleeping pills, you’re only going to sleep for a long time and in the worst case scenario get very sick.

Modern sleep aids also incorporate natural ingredients to help people sleep without resorting to chemicals always. Although sleep aids are not a cure for sleep disorders and should not be consumed on a regular basis, they are popular everywhere because they are a fast and easy means of falling and staying asleep. To make sleeping pills safer, there are now the kinds that are made of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Because melatonin is a natural part of our body, consuming melatonin sleep aids are believed to have fewer side effects than regular sleep aids.

But melatonin can also make it hard for you to wake up on time every morning if you don’t know when to time its consumption. In this post, we discuss melatonin production, melatonin sleep aids, and the right time to take it.

What Is Melatonin?

Like all bodily functions, sleep is also controlled by hormones. The hormone for alertness is serotonin, and the hormone for sleep is melatonin. While sunshine and bright lights aid in the production of serotonin, darkness aids in the production of melatonin. Melatonin is normally produced only after sundown.

But hormonal imbalances are common in every individual, and if your melatonin production is not normal, you are going to have sleep issues. Being exposed to bright lights also hinders melatonin production and makes it hard for sleep to come at night. Blue light is one of the worst enemies of melatonin production. If you are exposed to electronic devices most of the time, you are more at risk for suffering from sleep disorders. This is because the blue light emitted from backlit electronic devices significantly hinders melatonin production.

For a healthy sleep-wake cycle, the serotonin and melatonin productions should be in balance. Lack of melatonin causes sleep disorders like insomnia whereas a lack of serotonin causes depression and low energy. Melatonin is produced by the part of the brain called the hypothalamus.

Melatonin Sleep Aid

Sleep aids are known to have various side effects. This led to the development of sleep aids made with melatonin, a hormone that’s naturally present in our bodies. However, melatonin sleep aids aren’t a solution to low melatonin production. They only help you fall asleep by increasing the amount of melatonin in your brain. If you don’t take it, your melatonin levels will go back to their previous state.

Melatonin sleep aids usually come in the form of a pill and should be taken before bedtime. Melatonin supplements are available over-the-counter and don’t require prescriptions. Melatonin supplements are either pure or compounded and added to other products. Pure melatonin supplements are always available as pills or capsules, but when they are mixed to other products, they are also available as liquids or sprays.

Because melatonin supplements are very potent and fast-acting, they should be taken only before bedtime.

Melatonin Supplement Dosage

melatonin dosage Generally, melatonin supplements are available as over-the-counter drugs in most pharmacies. But they don’t require a prescription, are not regulated by the FDA, and have no fixed dosage. The appropriate dosage is usually mentioned on the pack but can also be misleading in many cases.

Before taking a melatonin supplement, it is important to consult a healthcare practitioner for the right dosage. Melatonin is more potent and faster acting than most other sleep aids and should be used judiciously to avoid side effects. Unlike other sleep aids, even the lowest dose of melatonin has been found effective in treating sleep issues. You don’t always have to take the highest dose for the maximum effect. To be on the safe side, it’s best to start with the lowest dosage.

There have so far been no adverse effects reported from melatonin supplements. However, the timing is everything in taking melatonin supplements. More important than the dose is the time when you are taking the supplement.

 How Long Does Melatonin Last?

A lot of people new to melatonin supplements experience excessive sleepiness during the day after taking sleep aid at night. This is because of wrong timing.

The effects of melatonin last according to the dosage. A dosage of 0.5 mg will last only an hour while a 10 mg dosage will last more than seven hours. It all depends on how severe your condition. If you have infrequent episodes of sleeplessness, then a dosage of one or two milligrams should help you fall asleep. If you’re a chronic insomniac or suffer from the delayed onset of sleep, you need a dosage of 10mg or higher.

The effects of melatonin are also quick to go away. Taking higher doses isn’t the solution here. You simply have to time it right. If you simply want to get better sleep and don’t suffer from a sleep disorder, you should take the supplement no sooner than 30 minutes before going to bed. If you suffer from delayed sleep onset, you should take it at least an hour before going to bed.

If you have been diagnosed with a sleep disorder and also take other sleep aids, you should not start taking a melatonin supplement without consulting a doctor. Melatonin supplements are usually known to be safe and can also be given to children. However, dependence on any sleep aid isn’t recommended.

Although melatonin supplements are considered safer than most other sleep aids, they should be taken only if recommended by a doctor. Consuming the wrong supplements or medications can make your condition grow worse.

If you are looking for a sleep supplement that will keep you asleep, try Sleep Relief. It is biphasic which means different ingredients will kick in at different times so that you stay asleep all night and wake up well-rested. One drawback of this supplement is that the pills are a bit large so may be a turn off if you don’t like swallowing pills. Another option is Olly Sleep Gummies which are chewable and taste great. While they aren’t quite as strong as Sleep Relief, they have other natural ingredients that keep you asleep more than melatonin alone.

Melatonin Dosage Chart:

  • Children aged 0-5 years old: Consult with a doctor before giving melatonin to children in this age range.
  • Children aged 6-12 years old: 1-3 mg of melatonin per day.
  • Adults aged 13 years and above: 3-10 mg of melatonin per day.

It’s important to note that the ideal dosage of melatonin can vary depending on a person’s individual needs, so it’s best to consult with a doctor before taking melatonin or any other supplements. Additionally, melatonin should only be taken for a short-term period to help with sleep issues, and not as a long-term solution.

Can You Overdose on Melatonin?

Yes, it is possible to overdose on melatonin. Taking too much melatonin can lead to several side effects, including:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Irritability
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Confusion
  • Hormonal fluctuations

In rare cases, extremely high doses of melatonin can lead to more serious symptoms, such as seizures or a decreased ability to regulate body temperature.

It’s important to follow the recommended dosage guidelines and to not exceed the recommended dose without consulting a doctor first. If you experience any negative side effects after taking melatonin, it’s important to stop taking it and seek medical attention if necessary.

Is it OK To Take Every Night?

Melatonin is generally safe for short-term use, but it’s not recommended to take it every night on a long-term basis. This is because your body may become dependent on melatonin to fall asleep, which can make it difficult to sleep without it. Additionally, taking melatonin every night can cause your body to stop producing its own melatonin naturally, which can further disrupt your sleep cycle.

It’s best to use melatonin for short-term periods to help with sleep issues, such as jet lag or occasional insomnia. If you’re experiencing ongoing sleep issues, it’s important to address the underlying causes with the help of a healthcare professional, rather than relying on melatonin as a long-term solution.

Can I Take Melatonin After Drinking?

It is not recommended to take melatonin if you have been drinking alcohol. Alcohol can interfere with the way melatonin is metabolized in the body, which can affect its effectiveness and potentially cause negative side effects.

Additionally, combining melatonin with alcohol can increase the sedative effects of both substances, which can lead to excessive drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination. This can be dangerous, especially if you’re planning to drive or operate heavy machinery.

If you have been drinking and are experiencing sleep issues, it’s best to avoid taking melatonin and instead, try other methods to promote sleep, such as relaxation techniques or a warm bath before bed. It’s important to give your body time to metabolize the alcohol before taking any supplements or medications.

Is Melatonin Addictive?

Melatonin is not considered addictive, as it doesn’t cause physical dependence or withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking it. However, as mentioned earlier, your body can become dependent on melatonin to fall asleep if you take it every night for a long period of time. This can make it difficult to sleep without melatonin, but it’s not the same as addiction.

It’s important to use melatonin as directed and only for short-term periods to avoid developing a dependence on it.

Most Popular Brands of Melatonin

There are many different brands of melatonin available on the market, but some of the most popular ones include:

  1. Natrol Melatonin
  2. Nature Made Melatonin
  3. NOW Melatonin
  4. Source Naturals Melatonin
  5. Sundown Naturals Melatonin
  6. Life Extension Melatonin
  7. Solgar Melatonin
  8. Garden of Life Melatonin
  9. Puritan’s Pride Melatonin
  10. GNC Melatonin

It’s important to note that the quality and effectiveness of melatonin can vary depending on the brand and formulation, so it’s important to choose a reputable brand and to follow the recommended dosage guidelines.

Melatonin Alternatives

If you’re looking for alternatives to melatonin for sleep support, there are several options to consider. Here are some common alternatives:

  1. Valerian root: Valerian root is a natural herb that can help promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.

  2. Chamomile: Chamomile tea is a popular natural remedy for sleep issues, as it has calming and soothing properties that can help you relax.

  3. Lavender: Lavender essential oil is known for its calming effects and can be used in aromatherapy or as a natural sleep aid.

  4. Magnesium: Magnesium is a mineral that can help relax the body and mind, making it easier to fall asleep.

  5. L-theanine: L-theanine is an amino acid that can help reduce stress and promote relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep.

  6. 5-HTP: 5-HTP is a natural supplement that can help increase serotonin levels in the brain, which can improve mood and promote better sleep.

Why Do I Wake Up A Few Hours After Taking Melatonin?

There could be several reasons why you’re waking up a few hours after taking melatonin. Here are a few possibilities:

  1. Timing: Melatonin is most effective when taken about 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime. If you take melatonin too early or too late, it may wear off before you’re ready to wake up, leading to disrupted sleep.

  2. Dosage: Taking too much or too little melatonin can also disrupt your sleep. If you’re taking too little, it may not be enough to help you stay asleep, while taking too much can cause drowsiness the next day or interfere with your sleep cycle.

  3. Individual differences: Everyone’s body chemistry is different, so melatonin may work differently for different people. Some people may find that melatonin helps them fall asleep but doesn’t keep them asleep, while others may find that it has no effect on their sleep.

  4. Underlying issues: If you’re experiencing ongoing sleep issues, there may be underlying issues that need to be addressed. This could include stress, anxiety, or other medical conditions that are affecting your sleep.

How Do You Take Melatonin?

Melatonin is available in various forms, including pills, liquids, gummies, and even sprays. Whether a pill or liquid form is better for you may depend on personal preference and convenience.

Pills are a convenient and easy way to take melatonin, as they’re portable and don’t require any measuring or mixing. They’re also available in different strengths and formulations, making it easier to find the right dose for your needs.

Liquid melatonin, on the other hand, can be absorbed more quickly by the body, making it a good option for people who have difficulty swallowing pills or need faster-acting relief. It can also be easier to adjust the dosage of liquid melatonin as needed.

Ultimately, the choice between pill or liquid melatonin may come down to personal preference and convenience. It’s important to choose a reputable brand and to follow the recommended dosage guidelines for whichever form you choose. If you have any questions or concerns about taking melatonin, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional.

Can Melatonin Help Prevent Covid?

There has been some research suggesting that melatonin may have potential in the treatment and prevention of COVID-19. COVID-19 is a viral respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus that has resulted in a global pandemic.

One study published in the journal Life Sciences found that melatonin may be effective in reducing the severity of COVID-19 symptoms and preventing complications, particularly in elderly patients who are at higher risk of developing severe illness. The study suggests that melatonin may have immunomodulatory effects that can regulate the immune response to the virus and reduce inflammation.

Another study published in the journal Antioxidants found that melatonin can help protect against the oxidative stress and inflammation caused by COVID-19, which may contribute to the development of severe illness.

However, it’s important to note that more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits of melatonin in the treatment and prevention of COVID-19.

Is it Illegal in Certain Countries?

The legal status of melatonin can vary depending on the country. In some countries, melatonin is available over-the-counter and is considered a dietary supplement, while in others it may be available only with a prescription or may be restricted or prohibited altogether.

For example, in the United States, melatonin is available over-the-counter and is considered a dietary supplement, which means it’s not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the same way that prescription drugs are. However, in other countries like Canada, melatonin is only available with a prescription.

In some countries, like Australia and New Zealand, melatonin is classified as a prescription medicine and is only available with a doctor’s prescription.

It’s important to check the legal status of melatonin in your country before purchasing or using it, and to follow any applicable regulations or guidelines.

How Soon To Take Before Going to Bed?

Melatonin is typically taken about 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime. This allows enough time for the melatonin to be absorbed by the body and start working to promote sleep.

It’s important to follow the recommended dosage guidelines for melatonin and to take it at the same time each night to help regulate your sleep cycle. Taking melatonin earlier or later than the recommended time may not be as effective, and could potentially disrupt your sleep cycle.

Is it Safe to Buy on Amazon?

It is generally safe to buy melatonin from reputable online retailers like Amazon. However, it’s important to be cautious when purchasing any supplements online, as the quality and authenticity of the product can vary depending on the seller.

When purchasing melatonin or any other supplements from Amazon, it’s important to choose a reputable seller with positive reviews and to check the expiration date and ingredients list before making a purchase. It’s also a good idea to research the brand and manufacturer to ensure that they have a good reputation and follow safe manufacturing practices.

Food and Sleep: Exclusive Tips for Best Rest Tonight

Alkaline foods and sleep

There’s no shortage of factors influencing your sleep quality, many of which might not immediately come to mind. From your work hours to bedroom ambiance and, crucially, the food and sleep relationship—each element plays a significant role in determining how well you rest each night. Whether it’s indulging in a hefty meal right before bedtime or consuming caffeine and alcohol, these habits can greatly impact your sleep cycle. If you often find yourself tossing and turning, what you eat throughout the day could be a contributing factor.

The Connection Between Food and Sleep

When discussing sleep health, it’s essential to recognize how the food you consume can affect your nightly rest. The link between food and sleep is significant, with both the quantity and quality of what you eat impacting your sleep quality. Despite rising awareness around healthy eating and exercise for general well-being, many individuals inadvertently consume diets that disrupt sleep.

In particular, acidic diets have come under scrutiny for their detrimental effects on sleep quality. Most people are unknowingly following such a diet, which can lead to restless nights. If each morning greets you with fatigue, it may be time to reevaluate your dietary choices.

Understanding an Acidic Diet

An acidic diet is characterized by a predominance of foods with a pH level of 4.6 or lower. These foods create excess acid in the body, tipping the balance away from a healthy alkaline state. Understanding pH levels is crucial; for instance, battery acid has a pH of zero, while pure distilled water sits at a neutral pH of 7.

In your body, different systems require varying pH levels. Your blood, for instance, is naturally more alkaline than your stomach, which needs acidity for effective digestion. However, consistently consuming acidic foods can lower your overall blood pH, leading to various health issues, including digestive problems and poor sleep. Frequent issues like indigestion may indicate an overly acidic environment in your body.

Common Acidic Foods to Avoid

Many everyday foods contribute to an acidic diet, and their regular intake can lower blood pH. Some of the most common acidic culprits include:

– Grains and bread
– Refined sugars
– Fish, including processed options
– Dairy products
– Fast foods like pizza, fries, and burgers
– Sugary drinks, alcohol, and sodas
– High-protein supplements
– Certain fruits and fruit juices
– Selected vegetables

These acidic foods, while familiar staples in many diets, can lead not only to digestive discomfort but also to impaired sleep quality.

How an Acidic Diet Impacts Sleep Quality

Many people are unaware of the link between their acidic diets and their sleep patterns. The stomach naturally produces a specific level of acid necessary for digestion, but the overconsumption of acidic foods can exacerbate this situation. This is why consuming heavy or acidic foods close to bedtime can lead to difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.

The brain requires significant energy to help you drift into slumber. If your digestive system is overloaded with processing heavy, acidic meals, it diverts energy away from sleep, making it harder to rest effectively. As a result, even if you manage to fall asleep, the quality of that sleep may suffer, leaving you feeling exhausted upon waking.

The Benefits of an Alkaline Diet

Foods with a pH level above 7 are classified as alkaline and can help rebalance your body’s acidity levels. Integrating alkaline foods into your diet can promote better digestion and ultimately lead to improved sleep quality. Key alkaline foods include:

– Soy products like tofu and miso
– A variety of fresh vegetables
– Unsweetened dairy options
– Selected fruits
– Herbs and spices (excluding salt, nutmeg, and mustard)
– Lentils and beans
– Whole grains like quinoa and millet
– Healthy fats from nuts, olive oil, and avocados
– Herbal teas

To maintain a more alkaline diet, consider swapping out acidic options for alkaline alternatives. Cooking at home can make this transition easier, as restaurant meals and packaged foods often contain higher levels of acidity.

Making Changes for a Better Night’s Sleep

Adopting an alkaline-focused diet is a manageable approach to promoting better sleep. The emphasis on plant-based foods, while minimizing processed options, can be highly beneficial. While it may be challenging to completely eliminate all acidic foods initially, gradual changes can markedly enhance both your health and sleep quality. Remember, the food you consume is intrinsically linked to your ability to rest well—making mindful dietary choices can pave the way for more peaceful nights.

Mattress Tags: Must-Have Insights for Safe Bedding Choices

Can you remove mattress tags

Can You Remove Mattress Tags?

Selecting a mattress isn’t something we do frequently, often taking years between purchases. For first-time buyers, the myriad of options—foam or innerspring, standard or luxury—can feel overwhelming. Should you try before you buy, or opt for convenient online shopping? Given the available choices, it’s easy to choose the wrong mattress, leading us to underappreciate its crucial role in our sleep quality. A reputable brand and high-quality materials are vital to ensure you select the right bed for your needs.

Upon bringing home a new mattress, you might be puzzled by a small tag attached to one side, bearing a curious message: “Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law.” This alarming caution can spark confusion and concern. Are mattress tags really a legal matter? Let’s delve into this topic to clarify the truth behind these mysterious labels.

What Are Mattress Tags?

Every consumer product typicallycomes with a label. It outlines key information such as brand, dimensions, materials, and care instructions. Mattresses, naturally, follow suit. The mattress tag includes the manufacturer, the materials used, the place of production, and important care advice. Yet, the most striking part of this label is the warning about removing it under legal penalty.

This quirky warning often graces mattress tags, leading to amusing speculation: why would the law care about such a trivial matter? It seems far-fetched to think law enforcement would busy themselves inspecting households for removed tags. However, the truth is much less intimidating than it seems when you consider the fine print: “except by consumer.”

The Real Purpose of Mattress Tags

Initially, the language on these tags appears alarming, but it serves a vital purpose primarily aimed at manufacturers and retailers rather than consumers. As a consumer, you are free to remove the tag without fear of legal repercussions. In fact, you could dismantle the entire mattress if you wished.

The tag exists to assure buyers about the integrity of their purchase: a brand new mattress made from safe, hygienic materials. If a mattress lacks a tag, it raises red flags regarding its origins and materials. The fascinating history behind these tags reveals why such vigilance is necessary for consumer safety.

A Brief History of Mattress Tags

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, mattresses were basic, and people rarely considered their safety or source. Manufacturers could cut corners, leading to widespread concerns about the filling materials. Unfortunately, some companies recycled old bedding, which sometimes included discarded hospital linens posing health risks, including the potential spread of diseases like tuberculosis.

In response to these practices, mattress tags were introduced to safeguard consumers. Initially, the tag outlined the materials used in the mattress. To ensure compliance, manufacturers were warned against removing these tags, and the legal caution was added.

The resulting confusion among consumers about tag removal prompted the clarification: “except by consumer.”

What Happens if a Mattress Lacks a Tag?

Finding a mattress without its tag can be a red flag. Such a product might be counterfeit or filled with questionable materials. If you encounter mattresses lacking this essential label, you can report the manufacturer or retailer. Penalties for non-compliance can range from official warnings to fines of up to $1,000. While this is a federal guideline, individual states dictate the design and information on the labels.

When a mattress undergoes recycling, all materials used must be disclosed on the tag, reinforcing the consumer’s right to safe bedding.

Conclusion: The Importance of Mattress Tags

Understanding mattress tags is essential for making informed purchasing decisions. While the warning against removing tags may seem daunting, it’s more about protecting the integrity of manufacturing practices than penalizing consumers. The next time you buy a mattress, remember that those tags are not just legal formalities. They serve as a safeguard, confirming that your investment is in a product that is safe and hygienic for sleep.

So, while you can remove mattress tags without fear, appreciate their role as a protector of your health and wellbeing. Mattress tags might seem trivial, but they play a crucial role in ensuring you receive a quality product that supports restful sleep for years to come.

Hästens Vividus: Stunning Luxury for Effortless Sleep

Hastens Bed Review

History of Hastens Mattress

Once upon a time, nestled in the lush green meadows of Sweden, a tale of luxury, comfort, and dreams took root. In the year 1852, a skilled artisan named Pehr Adolf Janson embarked on an ambitious journey. He sought to craft the most opulent sleep experience known to mankind, harnessing the essence of nature and blending it with unparalleled craftsmanship. And thus, Hästens, the world-renowned mattress brand, was born.

The early days of Hästens were marked by an unwavering dedication to quality. Janson, a saddlemaker by trade, carefully selected the finest natural materials for his creations: horsehair, cotton, and wool. The secret to Hästens’ inimitable softness and support lay in the horsehair, which offered remarkable breathability, temperature regulation, and durability. This unique blend of natural fibers became the hallmark of Hästens mattresses, setting them apart from all others.

As the years went by, Hästens continued to evolve, embracing innovation and enhancing its expertise. In 1924, the brand adopted the distinctive blue and white checkered pattern, inspired by the Swedish flag. This timeless design became synonymous with Hästens’ commitment to quality and elegance, a subtle reminder of the brand’s proud heritage.

The year 1952 marked a significant milestone for Hästens, as the brand introduced its first-ever pocket spring mattress. This groundbreaking innovation, a fusion of old-world craftsmanship and modern technology, allowed the company to offer unparalleled comfort and support to its discerning customers. The pocket springs, meticulously layered within the mattress, allowed for a sleep surface that adapted to the sleeper’s every movement, cradling the body in a cocoon of luxurious rest.

Over the years, Hästens continued to refine its craftsmanship, creating mattresses that were nothing short of works of art. The brand’s master artisans, the modern-day descendants of Pehr Adolf Janson, devoted hundreds of hours to handcrafting each mattress, ensuring that every stitch, every tuft, and every layer was perfect. The result was a sleep experience that transcended the ordinary, transporting the sleeper to a realm of blissful slumber.

Today, Hästens is synonymous with the pinnacle of luxury and comfort, gracing the homes of royalty, celebrities, and discerning sleep connoisseurs the world over. The brand’s commitment to excellence remains unwavering, as does its dedication to sustainability and the preservation of nature. Hästens believes that the most exquisite sleep experience can only be achieved by respecting the earth and its resources.

And so, the tale of Hästens continues, as the brand journeys forth into the world of dreams. Its legacy lives on in the hearts of those who have experienced the sublime embrace of a Hästens mattress, a testament to the enduring power of craftsmanship, innovation, and a love for the finest things in life.

There’s been a recent spurt of health and wellness focused items in various industries. From organic food to natural skincare products to environment-friendly cookware, health and wellness have become an entire industry in itself, and consumers are also hooked. Everyone wants to be healthy, eating right and sleeping well. And these health and wellness products aim to make this easier for consumers. A case in point is the sleep industry. Even till a decade ago, no one could predict that this nightly phenomenon that all of us go through could become a whole market in itself. But today this is a reality, with hundreds of products claiming to improve sleep quality and keep away sleep disorders.

From luxury mattresses to sleep-related gadgets like light alarm clocks and sound machines, there is an endless list of products to splurge on. But have you ever considered splurging more than $100,000 on a bed?

No, we aren’t kidding. If you thought that your $3,000 bed was the most expensive it could get, you are making a huge mistake. There is a mattress – probably the only one in the world right now – that’s close to $150,000 and has the world in awe. It’s possibly the most luxurious bed that’s fit for a queen and is still touted as worth the money. Why? Let’s find out.

Hästens Vividus – What Is It?

As you probably have already guessed from the name, this is a Swedish luxury bed. But the question is, with thousands of luxury beds available today, what exactly sets it apart, aside from the price tag?

The Hästens Vividus bed isn’t something consumers would buy at the drop of a hat. It’s for those who not only have that kind of money to spend but also the lifestyle to fit it in. It’s a custom, continental bed that’s crafted to perfection by four master artisans at the Hästens workshop in Sweden’s Köping. You pay $149,000 for a pinewood frame and steel springs, with layers of horsetail hair, flax, wool, and cotton batting. If that reminds you of mattresses made in the early centuries, you are right. Hästens specializes in making beds that are entirely handcrafted with pure, natural materials, just like the mattresses of yore.

The Hästens Vividus could well be the bed that Queen Victoria slept on. And it has absolutely no competitors in the mattress industry. None at all. Of course, for that price, you get several other things, such as the finest diamond necklace from Tiffany or a Mercedes AMG GT S. If you choose to buy this bed instead, read on to learn more about its features.

Quality and Features

The Hästens bedding company has been around since 1852, and their motto has always been “The Spirit of Excellence.” We wonder if it can get any more excellent than this entirely handcrafted bed made of all-natural materials. In a market where latex and foam are the key materials, the mention of horsetail hair and flax certainly makes you take notice.

Hästens has a number of showrooms around the world, including the US, and every interested customer is encouraged to visit a store to check out the product before shelling out the massive sum.

But you may wonder the advantage of horse hair and flax in a mattress when the market is flooded with things like gel memory foam, air-engineering, and open cell technology. Hästens has been in the bedding industry much before latex or memory foam came into existence. In those times natural materials were used to make mattresses. Even though today these materials seem very outdated, back in those days they made some of the finest beds. This Swedish company sticks to the tradition and continues to make all-natural handmade beds. In fact, a story goes that’s the Swedish royal family was so impressed with the craftsmanship of Hästens that the company was named the Official Bedding Supplier to the Swedish Royal Court. This was over 65 years ago.

There is no doubt that the Swedes are incredible at the craftsmanship. From knives to cutlery to furniture to bedding, anything manufactured in Sweden becomes a collector’s piece. The same applies to the Hästens Vividus. Every bed is made to order and customized according to preferences. Although there are beds on display at their showrooms, Hästens takes care to specially craft a bed for you once you place an order. This makes every bed unique.

There are several benefits of an all-natural bed. Horse tail hair is a natural temperature regulator, absorbing moisture as the bed heats when you sleep and releasing it the moisture as the bed cools when you get out of it. Flax has antibacterial properties, making the mattress hygienic and safe. Flax is also used to make linen fibers. Cotton is excellent at wicking moisture and helping you stay cool, while wool keeps you warm in the colder months.

Sure, you don’t get the bounce of memory foam, but you do get a bed that’s 100 percent natural, free from chemicals, and has been made just for you by master craftsmen in faraway Sweden. Besides, Hästens has researched a good deal about the science of sleep and makes sure that their beds help customers get the best sleep ever.

So Why Hästens Vividus So Expensive?

This is where the fun begins. When you first see the Hästens Vividus bed up close, it can slightly anger you: why is something that looks so ordinary priced $149,000? It doesn’t look anything like those technology-driven mattresses that are the rage today. It doesn’t look like a cloud, and it doesn’t promise to feel as soft either. It doesn’t have any built-in gadget– no phone charger, no smartphone app, no television or refrigerator. Then why on Earth is it so expensive?

To understand this, we need to know the history of the Vividus. When the bed was first made in 2006, it used to take 160 hours to build and was priced at $112,900. In the next 10 years, the company researched more about regulating body temperature and offering more comfort and support without using any artificial material. They did manage to make the Vividus better, but it only started to take double the time– 320 hours. That’s because Hästens has only four certified craftsmen and only one atelier in Sweden. Each bed is made to order and requires at least 10 weeks to build.

Next, come the materials. The frame is made from Swedish pine wood that’s slow-growing and not abundant. Needless to say, Swedish pine wood is expensive and not easily available. Next in line is the box spring, which has steel springs as well as several layers of flax used to soundproof the bed. On top of that sits the mattress, made with more springs, and multiple layers of horsetail hair lining and cotton and wool batting, layered just the way you would bake a cake or lasagna. The topmost layer is the mattress pad, called the “topper,” made with many more layers of wool, cotton, and horsehair.

Horsehair is one of the most critical components of the bed and also requires the most effort and time. The hair is hand braided and then unwound, to make it bouncy. Once the strands of horsehair are curled, they function like springs, giving the bed bounce and support. Unlike human hair, horsehair is hollow and excellent at wicking away moisture to prevent sweat buildup.

Because all these materials are natural and cannot be manufactured in a factory, they are hard to obtain and also expensive. There are no screws and nails in the bed, only dovetail joints. The step-stitching is done by hand with an 18-inch-long needle.

However, the advantage is that when you lie on the bed, you not only feel supported overall but also have your legs slightly elevated, which is beneficial for blood circulation.

Besides the customized comfort, you also get a 25-year warranty, and a bed that’s fit to be passed down to next generations.

Is Hästens Vividus Worth It?

It was recently reported that Drake now sleeps on a Hastens mattress. His is custom made, costs $395,000, took over 600 hours to make and weighs roughly one ton.

Drake Bed If you have the money and want to splurge not on diamonds or gold watches but on sleep, then the Hästens Vividus is for you. You don’t easily find such beds. Free from chemicals and artificial materials, the Vividus is crafted for the most blissful and most hygienic sleep.

You don’t necessarily have to lie on a $150,000 mattress for the most restful sleep. If you have a sleep disorder, then a mattress isn’t going to cure it. However, if you do want to invest in the most luxurious sleep, it doesn’t get any better than the Hästens Vividus.

If you want the poor person’s Hasten’s mattress, check out the Brentwood Home Oceano. It’s less than 1% of the price and you aren’t compromising much except bragging rights.

Stunning Solutions for Sleep Disorders in Autistic Children

Managing sleep disorders in children with autism

Managing Sleep Disorders in Children with Autism

Parents of children with autism often face nightly challenges when it comes to sleep. Managing sleep disorders in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a prominent concern that affects not only the child but also the entire household. Sleep difficulties can leave children feeling irritable and exhausted, leading to heightened stress for the entire family. Understanding these challenges can arm parents with the necessary tools to help their children achieve better sleep and improve overall family dynamics.

Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental condition that varies widely among individuals. Characterized by difficulties in communication and social interaction, the symptoms typically manifest between ages one and two. While some children may exhibit subtle symptoms, others may show pronounced signs that impact their daily lives. Key indicators of autism include:

– Lack of response to their name
– Resistance to physical affection
– Limited emotional expression or eye contact
– Difficulty in initiating or maintaining conversations
– Challenges with following instructions or interpreting nonverbal cues
– Disruptive or aggressive behavior in social situations
– Coordination issues
– Repetitive motions such as rocking or spinning
– Self-harm behaviors like head-banging or biting
– Strong preference for specific routines and aversion to changes

Although there is currently no cure for ASD, early intervention with appropriate therapies can significantly enhance daily functioning and overall quality of life.

Sleep Disorders in Children with Autism

While sleep disturbances are common among children, they become more complex when autism is involved. These disorders can include:

– Irregular sleep patterns, such as staying awake late or waking too early
– Insufficient sleep for their age
– Night-time awakenings for play or noise-making
– Excessive daytime sleepiness
– Falling asleep in unconventional places and difficulty moving to their bed

Children with autism often require reassurance and may disrupt the sleep of parents and siblings. This creates a cycle of stress that can be daunting for families.

Causes of Sleep Disorders in Children with Autism

Understanding the origins of sleep disorders in children with autism is crucial for effective management. The challenges can stem from several underlying factors:

Difficulty in Communication

A significant barrier for children with autism is their struggle to articulate their needs. This communication deficit can create anxiety, preventing them from relaxing enough to sleep. Stress and frustration may result from their inability to understand or express themselves.

Importance of Routine

Routines are vital for children with autism. Irregularities can lead to heightened anxiety and difficulties settling down for sleep. Many children may have specific preferences for where and how they sleep, and deviations from these habits can trigger distress.

Hyperactivity

Hyperactivity is another hallmark of autism. Children may display boundless energy, making it hard for them to wind down at night. Activities like jumping, spinning, or engaging in repetitive behaviors can impede their ability to stay still and transition into sleep.

Medication Side Effects

Some children with autism may be prescribed medications that, while necessary for managing symptoms, can also lead to sleep issues. If your child experiences sleep disturbances that seem linked to medication, consult with your healthcare provider for possible adjustments.

Strategies for Managing Sleep Disorders in Children with Autism

Addressing sleep problems in children with autism may require tailored strategies. Here are several effective techniques to consider:

Develop and Stick to Sleep Routines

Creating a calming bedtime routine can significantly improve sleep quality. Engage your child in soothing activities—like reading or quiet play—30 minutes before the designated bedtime. Consistency in bedtimes and wake times is essential for establishing a healthy sleep rhythm.

Provide Warnings Before Bedtime

Preparation is key for children with autism. Inform them in advance when bedtime is approaching to help lessen anxiety about transitions. Gradually introduce changes instead of making sudden announcements about bedtime.

Patience and Consistency

Reinforcing bedtime expectations involves repeatedly guiding your child back to bed if they get up. Demonstrating persistence and patience is crucial; return them to bed gently, fostering an understanding that it is time to sleep.

Optimize the Sleep Environment

Creating an ideal sleep setting can make a significant difference. Adjust the lighting and reduce noise to promote relaxation. If your child has particular sleep aids or routines, gradually help them learn to sleep independently while phasing out excessive reliance on specific items.

Conclusion

Managing sleep disorders in children with autism is an ongoing journey that requires patience, understanding, and effective strategies. It’s crucial for parents to recognize and address their children’s unique needs while fostering an environment conducive to restful sleep. While some challenges may persist into adulthood, with consistent effort and professional guidance, both children and their families can experience improved sleep patterns and quality of life. By prioritizing solutions and nurturing routines, parents can create a more harmonious home environment that enables their children to flourish.

Lunesse Comforter Review: Stunning Winter Essential

Pacific Coast Lunesse Comforter Review

Overview of the Lunesse Comforter

The Lunesse Comforter is a mid-range White Goose Down comforter made by Pacific Coast, a company who understands that the devil is in the details. The company gives you a 30 Night Comfort Guarantee to make sure that you absolutely love the comforter and honestly, it’s difficult not to. The purchase includes an Allergy Free Limited Warranty as well as a 10 Year Limited Warranty. With 600 Fill Power, it’s more than adequate for cold, winter days and the batiste cotton, that’s known to be one of its most distinguishing features, is one of the lightest fabrics in the industry, allowing for a comforter that isn’t heavy and one that can maintain it’s poof with ease. The goose down is also sourced responsibly which is a nice plus.

lunesse goose down comforter on bed

Construction of the Lunesse Comforter

The Lunesse comforter is available in two sizes: Queen and King. The measurements are as follows:

Full/Queen: 90” x 98”

King/CalKing: 108” x 98”

The comforter’s most essential ingredient, the goose down, is sewn into a barrier weave down proof fabric that keeps feathers from flying. Also, to be more specific, goose down doesn’t refer to traditional feathers, (such as quills, which would be the main wing or tail feathers) but the soft material found on the breast of a goose. Down clusters are described to be light, soft and fluffy. They have no hard elements. It’s known for all of this as well as it’s unbelievable (aka magical) insulating properties.

This goose down comforter has been sewn with 370 thread count batiste cotton fabric which is known to be 30% lighter than other comparable fabrics. Batiste is defined as “a fine cloth made from cotton, wool, polyester, or a blend, and is the softest of the lightweight opaque fabrics.” Aside from preventing you from feeling like your blanket weighs too much, or is suffocating somehow, fabric like this allows the down feathers to breathe and maintain their loft. In this case, the fabric is utilized to literally not weigh things down.

Moving on to the inside, the duvet consists of 600 fill power of Hyperclean® white goose down. One person mentioned in their review of the product, on the company page, that the comforter was “noisy,” further explaining that, “it is crinkly sounding and is annoying while sleeping or even just lounging in bed. Also the loft is very thin. It is not fluffy at all. Very flat and thin.”

But this individual was just unfortunately uninformed and besides, my out-of-the-box experience was much different. The company wrote back explaining that as a result of the nature of down proof fabric, that the material can be stiff when new, which can result in the noise this person was experiencing. The same remedy to soften the fabric is one that would also open up the down clusters to give it the decadent feel (and loft) it was missing from out-of-the-box. Pacific Coast Bedding recommends the following:

If you have access to a large dryer, place your comforter with a couple of clean tennis balls (or dryer balls), a fabric softener sheet, and lightly damp washcloth. Tumble your comforter on low heat until the washcloth is dry, for most dryers 15-20 minutes. The steam from the washcloth will open up the down clusters, while the fabric softener sheet will soften the fabric without adhering to the down.

As consumers, something we must keep in mind is that companies need to do a lot of different things to deliver their products to us in a way that is feasible for all parties. Pillows are often compressed and the same goes for bedding. It will always come folded. Figuring out how the product should perform best is reliant upon our own investigation.

My Lunesse Comforter Findings

When you touch the comforter by hand, or when you feel it above you, it’s evident that this is a high quality product. That’s because you can FEEL only softness. There are no quills, no roughness, no hard spots, nothing that appears to not belong. It’s of quality because of its consistency.

I saw a tiny little cluster of down in the air only once, about 1 cm in size, and that was it. The manner in which the batiste cotton fabric was sewn must be meticulous to allow air to circulate but to not allow any of the down to escape from it. It’s actually really quite impressive when you think about how much goose down, how many clusters had to be used, in a single comforter.

lunesse comforter digital drawing

The sewn through box design and the comfort lock border is a must and I can’t imagine a manufacturer creating a product like this without it. I have seen comforters made of synthetic materials sewn in a different manner but this grid-like compartment system is key because the down wouldn’t stay in place otherwise and it also works to keep it evenly distributed, which works well not only in terms of aesthetics but also in terms of efficiency.

pacific coast comforter duvet loop corner

Their printed duvet loops were a real treat. This type of comforter is not one you just throw on top of your bed. It belongs in a duvet cover, to protect it and to dress it as you like. Without these duvet loops, the comforter would absolutely not have stayed in place throughout the night. My partner moves around in bed and it’s frustrating enough to find pillows on the floor or the bed sheets all pulled to one side but it’s always nice to see that the duvet hasn’t moved (because it can’t, yay!)

SUITABLE FOR WINTER USE ONLY?

One comment that I made in the video was that I would not recommend this comforter for any season except for winter but that might have been far too quick of an assumption. I do heat my home considerably and didn’t initially factor this in when trying out the comforter. Goose down duvet regulates temperature itself and you heating up your home or heating it up too much may make this sort of comforter feel excessive.

It’s not labeled to be an all-season comforter but it is said to be good for varying climates. Apparently all-season duvet comforters come in a set of 2, one which is lighter, the other thicker, so be mindful to read everything when you’re shopping around. In this case, the comforter is only a single layer.

My Pacific Coast Lunesse Comforter Recommendation

In comparison to duck down, goose down is definitely the better option and not because it’s traditionally the more POPULAR option. In fact, it’s been the more popular option because goose down is harvested in larger clumps and makes for a lighter and more efficient insulator in comparison to duck down, which can only be harvested in smaller clumps. There are also a lot more ducks than geese, typically resulting in lower production costs but goose down is still the more premium material.

I love this comforter. The Lunesse Goose Down Comforter is exactly the kind of luxury that’s been missing from my life. Winter is not my favorite season and getting through it always comes with some struggle.

lunesse comforter construction

While I’m from Europe, Poland specifically, and while goose down pillows and comforters are the standard in Europe, I don’t remember what my experience was like sleeping with goose down products as a kid because I left the country when I was young. In America, goose down isn’t the standard here because it’s not as readily available. Because it is a more premium product in the states, the price of it can be just as exclusive. This comforter is no excuse in that regard but it’s not the highest priced I’ve seen. It’s also not just priced high for the sake of it; it legitimately comes down to quality and I feel that this is a high quality item. I’ve never felt so comforted and so warm from a comforter. I really did feel insulated as if I was in my own cocoon.

One thing that I wasn’t very impressed with and that I would change immediately is the packaging. It was really nothing special. The plastic comforter blanket storage bag was relatively cheap and plain. It was difficult to unzip as one of the zippers were defective but I was happy there were two so there was no need to reach for the box cutter. The branding overall could be better and the first place I’d improve that is with their physical presentation of the product. While Pacific Coast does have affordable options as far as down comforters go, I still think there’s no reason why they can’t improve the covers they package they comforters in. It’d be nice if it was more durable and looked nicer, not just because I would like it but because if this is supposed to be perceived as high end, even if it is the more affordable end of high end, it still needs to look like the luxury good that it is.

lunesse comforter before unboxing

The unboxing experience is always the most exciting but there was something else that upset me a little. When I had opened the package, the product cover didn’t actually specify that it was in fact the Lunesse Comforter so, I had assumed that I might have gotten the wrong item. Lunesse wasn’t written anywhere. I checked the item number on the order number and compared it to the invoice that was attached and it was the same. I also called the company to check the UPC code and they confirmed that I did, in fact, receive the correct item. Shortly after, I found out that they had actually decided to discontinue the item, which could be the reason behind the uninteresting packaging and why they might have gone with something more generic. You can still find the Lunesse product page online but you’ll see that there’s no inventory and that it has been removed from the main down comforter product listing page.

I called Pacific Coast Feather Company to get a suggestion of what comforters would work best in replacement of the Lunesse Comforter and there were two I was recommended: The Deluxe Oversized Comforter and the Supima Cotton Luxury Down Comforter. I put together a table below to help you understand the similarities and differences between the three.

pacific coast goose down comforter comparison chart

Overall I’m really impressed with the company, with their products and how they carry themselves overall (customer service was very gracious and informative). Packaging appearance could use an upgrade but the actual product itself is a solid one.

Sleep Technology: Exclusive Devices for Better Sleep Today

alex knight 199368 unsplash scaled

We all know that the general advice is that technology and sleep don’t mix. Don’t watch TV right before bed, limit your use of smartphone too close to your bedtime. Blue light from screens has been proven to suppress melatonin, a hormone secreted by the pineal gland that helps regulate our biological rhythm, including sleep and wake cycles. Too much time on your phone can also lead to highly undesirable parasomnias like sleep texting.

But what if the right kind of technology can actually help you sleep?

In the recent years, the sleep technology sector has boomed, with companies offering high tech devices that promise to help us become aware of our sleep habits and even improve them. In fact, in the last two years, sleep technology has been one of the biggest trends at CES (Consumer Electronics Show), the world’s biggest electronics show. This year, the sleep tech section at CES has grown by 22% compared to 2018. According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one third of American adults do not get enough sleep. Perhaps technology will provide the long awaited solution to this nation-wide sleep problem.

One noticeable trend this year is the rise in devices that not only track your sleep patterns but also do something about it. Another trend is the rise in devices that use specifically EEG sensing to monitor your brain activity and help you improve your sleep based on that data.

Here is an overview of the most prominent and advanced types of sleep tech devices to help you begin to navigate the world of sleep technology and hopefully decide which ones may be right for you.

Smart sleep masks

Dreamlight

Smart masks do much more than simply block the light. As the name suggests, they go over your eyes, but being smart they also help you track your sleep habits and improve them using various technologies.

Dreamlight smart mask uses light and sound to help you sleep better. The mask is made of foam, it wraps around your head and is secured with a velcro. It comes with embedded speakers that play relaxing sounds or guided vocal hypnosis to help you relax, and activates internal warm orange pulsing light “to promote mindfulness via deep breathing practice”.The masks can also act as an alarm clock, waking you up with soft green light which is better for you than waking up with an alarm. The masks also tracks and analyzes your sleep patterns and stores these data on an app that can be accessed from your smartphone.

Some smart masks also promise to help you reduce snoring. The Snore Circle mask identifies snoring using advanced bone conduction and sound recognition technologies. It then triggers a reaction in your brain that makes you tighten your muscles and open your airway.

Smart headbands

sleep bands

Smart headbands act in many ways like smart sleep masks, in that they track your sleep and help you improve it using specific technologies. But they can sometimes have additional functions.

Muse has just revealed a sleep meditation headband. It is a soft headband (actually called Softband) that sits on your head and plays guided meditation to help you fall asleep. It can also detect when you’re asleep and can turn itself off. It uses brain sensors throughout the night to monitor your sleep patterns and provides a report in an accompanying app.

Philips’ SmartSleep Deep Sleep headband introduced at this year’s CES has a built-in sensor that monitors your sleep patterns, detects when you  have entered the slow-wave sleep (deep sleep) stage and emits special sounds during this stage to boost slow waves. According to Philips, SmartSleep Deep Sleep headband has been clinically proven to help increase sleep quality and increase energy during the day.

Temperature Controlling devices

ooler

Some devices aim to improve your sleep by maintaining the optimal temperature for quality sleep, which is typically in the range of 60-67 degrees. One such device is Ooler, a temperature control system made by Kryo Inc. It consists of three parts: a water-based cooling control unit, a hydro layer and the mattress cover. The system can be controlled via a smartphone app and allows you to set your own temperature schedule for the night, including waking up by gently warming up the temperature.

Moona is another temperature regulating device, specifically a temperature regulating pillow pad that is designed to fit into any pillow. It consists of a small water tank that sits on the bedside table and a pillow insert, and works by actively cooling down the water flowing through the pad throughout the night. As with Ooler, you can set it to wake you up by gently increasing the temperature.

Smart Sleep Systems

If you want it all in one, but without having to wear anything, there is that option too. Magniflex’s advanced MagniSmartech sleep system includes the mattress, the bed and the base, but it is much more than simply an adjustable bed. It comes with a sensor technology and is able to track your sleeping patterns and body stats such as heart rate, body temperature and respiratory rhythm. It also has an anti-snoring feature, and uses color therapy LED lights to help you relax. You can set it to wake you up either by vibrating, sitting you up gently, or turning on the color therapy lights. The mattress used by this system is MagniStretch mattress which is certified by the American Chiropractic Association. The mattress is said to be made in such a way as to help your spine stretch increasing the spaces between each vertebra. It also regulates your temperature with the help of the  Outlast® cover originally developed by NASA. The smart bed activates when it feels someone in bed so you don’t have to use an app to turn it on.

Smart lights

philips hue

Smart lights might not technically fall under sleep tech, but since it is well known that light can make or break your sleep, it is worth including them here. The kind of light that we’re exposed to during the day and right before bed either helps or hinders our circadian rhythms. Smart lights can help your artificial light work for you and create the right kind of lightning for relaxation without much effort.

Philips Hue smart lights are controlled by an accompanied Hue app from your phone or a smart home device like Google Home or Amazon Echo. You can choose the colour and brightness to help you relax in the evening and set a schedule to turn it off at a particular time. You can also set the light to gently fade in when it’s time for wake up, again possibly replacing your alarm clock.

Other devices

There are also devices that aim to improve your sleep that do not fall neatly into any category.

Smart Nora is a device that promises to help you with snoring. It consists or a microphone that is placed on the wall or headboard above your head, and a pillow insert. Whenever the microphone detects early snoring sounds, the air-inflated pillow insert is automatically moved to adjust the position of the head and interrupt the snoring.

Aromarest is a lamp, diffuser and white-noise machine all in one. It can be configured to emit the scent of lavender at bedtime which has been proven to help you relax, play soothing sounds, and simulate sunset and sunrise.

Dodow is a saucer shaped device developed by insomniacs to help people who suffer from insomnia. It sits on your bedside table and projects light onto the ceiling, encouraging you to synchronize your breathing rhythm to the light, inhaling when the beam expands and exhaling when it retracts. The rhythmic breathing is said to stimulate your baroreflex and help you relax and fall asleep within 8 minutes.

Heavenluxe Tencel Sheets: Stunning Comfort, Risky Price

Heavenluxe Tencel Sheets Review
IMG 2147 scaled

I received a set of white Luxe Austrian Tencel sheets from Heavenluxe, wrapped in plastic and taped thoroughly to conform to the shape of their simplistic white box.

IMG 2130 scaled

There was little to no information on the box aside from the company name, their website, the product name, and box contents.

IMG 2135 scaled

I was impressed with how clean and no-nonsense the whole package was, but when I opened it up there was a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt on the underside of the top flap.

IMG 2137 scaled

It’s a great quote, but the font was atrocious. For a company that has such a clean and professional look to their products and website, I was baffled as to why they would choose a Lucida Handwriting-esque font that you might see on a tacky Get Well Soon card from Hallmark. The juxtaposition of the clean sans-serif logo below the bubbly cursive was striking, but not as striking as the sheets.

IMG 2138 scaled

Heavenluxe Sheets Construction

The sheets inside were so incredibly shiny and reflective, they almost seemed to emit their own light when tousled on the couch. The folds and ripples gave a kind of depth to the sheets that I have never seen before on any kind of fabric—I love shiny things, and I loved these sheets immediately.

IMG 2150 scaled

Nailing a first impression can be hard if you’re just selling plain white sheets unless there’s something special about them, and for Heavenluxe that special something is a fabric composition that feels extraordinary. Never have I ever felt a softer set of sheets in my life.

IMG 2153 scaled

I followed the directions on the tag to wash in cold water and dry on low heat, which only made them feel more luxurious and soft—I didn’t think that was even possible. I put the sheets on my bed and slipped in between my covers and instantly was smitten.

IMG 2151 scaled

My Heavenluxe Findings

Sleeping on Heavenluxe Tencel Luxe sheets is like laying on a cloud made of a single whispy breath of fresh air. I’m often skeptical when manufacturers advertise their products as being “silky smooth,” because 9 times out of 10 it’s an exaggeration. I will tell you now, these sheets really truly are silky smooth. The seams are perfect and nearly invisible, making the sheets sleek and elegant.

IMG 2146 scaled

They’re smoother and softer than the Peachskin microfiber sheets, so I had high hopes, but I also knew that with extreme softness comes a hurdle for me—they get hot. To my delight though, the sheets weren’t too hot or too cold. The Tencel fabric is warm, but definitely not as warm as the Peachskins. The Heavenluxe set is breathable, smooth, and beyond comfortable, but I did find some issues.

IMG 2187 scaled

Costs and Benefits

Where Heavenluxe exceeds in softness and sheen, it unfortunately fails in accessibility. Honestly, I did not see the itemized list until after I opened everything and discovered for myself that they only included a fitted sheet and two pillow cases. I use a flat sheet every time I make my bed, and when I purchase a set of sheets for $297 I expect it to include a flat sheet… so I was a bit disappointed. I personally have never heard of a sheet set that doesn’t have a flat sheet, but maybe I’m not looking in the right places. I wish that I had had a flat sheet so I could have the full experience, but they don’t even have that as an option on their website—you can only order the three-piece bed set. So instead I had to improvise with mismatched sheets. $297 is a lot to spend when you have to go out and buy more sheets just to have the average number of sheets. It feels like opening a birthday present on your 8th birthday only to find that it doesn’t come with batteries.

IMG 2185 scaled

After washing the sheets, two things stood out to me. The first was that after following the laundry instructions to a “T,” the sheets were shedding. I found threads all over the place and I have no idea where they came from or why they’re abandoning ship.

IMG 2154 scaled

While the seams look so slick and non-existent, they do feel a bit delicate. I was almost worried that if I made my bed a little too hard one day, the seams would rip. After some research, I learned that Austrian Tencel is actually one of the most durable fabrics that sheets can be made of so I’m not worried, however the sheets did shrink. This is the first set of sheets I’ve received that has shrunk in their first wash (despite following the laundry instructions), and they did so by a whole inch and a half. Not a big deal, but I rarely see any shrinkage in my cold washes.

IMG 2184 scaled

My Heavenluxe Recommendations

So why $297? It’s actually a reasonable price if you’re looking for authentic Tencel sheets. This 47-year-old fabric pales in comparison to the 7000 year track record of cotton, but age doesn’t mean a thing when you have the credentials of eucalyptus wood pulp fibers. Tencel is 500x thinner than cotton and 20x more moisture-wicking. What really amazes me is that this new eucalyptus fabric uses 96% less water and 30% less energy than cotton, making its environmental impact virtually zero. Heavenluxe transforms this renewable and sustainable resource into fabric through an environmentally friendly production process. They even donate a percentage of every sale to local charities that fund children’s educational programs.

IMG 2148 scaled

So while Austrian Tencel sheets may be expensive, the night’s sleep you will get from them is worth more than the $300 you’ll spend on a fitted sheet and two pillowcases. Aside from the great zzz’s, you will be contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable world, and a future generation of well-educated kids. When it comes down to it, I’m in love with plant-based alternative sustainable materials, so ultimately despite my reservations around price and lack of variety, I think buying from Heavenluxe would be a great investment for any sleep aficionado. Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Review: Stunning Comfort Awaits!

Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Review
Amerisleep AS3
$1,299 (Queen)
We earn a commission if you make a purchase, at no additional cost to you.

Amerisleep has a straightforward system for naming their mattresses:

  • AS + Number: The models are named “AS” followed by a number, ranging from 1 to 5.
  • Firmness Scale: The number directly corresponds to firmness, where AS1 is the firmest and AS5 is the softest.

This simple system makes it easy for customers to understand the main difference between the models and choose based on their firmness preference:

  • AS1 and AS2: Best for strict stomach and back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel.
  • AS3: The most popular choice, its medium-firm feel suits side, back, and combination sleepers.
  • AS4 and AS5: Ideal for side sleepers and those who love a plush, pressure-relieving feel.

The Amerisleep AS3 is one of the most popular models by Amerisleep. This mattress has a medium feel that contours very well but still offers enough support for stomach and back sleepers. What sets Amerisleep mattresses apart from most of the competition is that all their models come with Celliant® technology infused into the cover. Celliant® is a proprietary mix of 13 thermo-reactive minerals that are embedded into polyester fibers. This fiber absorbs body heat and recycles it into infrared energy. The benefit of this technology is increased circulation, which leads to better sleep and recovery.

The medium firmness of the AS3 makes it ideal for most sleep positions and body types. Side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers are sure to find comfort with this bed. Amerisleep has also released the AS3 in a hybrid version. The AS3h hybrid offers the same responsive and soft Bio-Pur® comfort layer, but the base of the hybrid is individually wrapped innerspring coils that are zoned for targeted support. The hybrid is a great option for those that want the contouring effect of memory foam, but also like the bounce that comes with an innerspring bed.

Now, let’s look at the details of the Amerisleep AS3 and jump into my review!

Overview of the Amerisleep AS3

After you place your order, your Amerisleep mattress will arrive at your door in a box like the one below. No need to wait for a delivery company.

Here’s the mattress on the bed.

Amerisleep Mattress on Bed

Finally, this is what it looks like a few minutes after opening it. As you can see it is already at full shape.

Amerisleep AS3Here’s a video overview of the AS3. This mattress recovers quickly out of the box and had little off-gassing smell. This mattress comes with a standard 100-night trial with free shipping and free returns.

Construction of the Amerisleep AS3

Below are the construction details as listed on their website.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE CELLIANT® COVER

Celliant® is an advanced fabric made with 13 thermoreactive minerals that helps improve the performance of the mattress.

EXTRA-BREATHABLE COOLING LAYER

Our Bio-Pur™ foam is five times more breathable than traditional memory foam, because of it’s advanced open-cell structure. It wicks away heat while you sleep and can help keep you cool and comfortable.

“FEELS-LIKE-YOU’RE-FLOATING” LAYER

The affinity transition layer is soft and responsive. It reacts to your body position to evenly support your weight and can help relieve pressure points, so it feels as if you’re weightlessly resting on a cloud.

SAG-FREE & ECO-FRIENDLY SUPPORT

Our Bio-Core™ foam support layer won’t sag even after decades of use. And, like our Bio-Pur™ foam, it’s partially made from plants instead of petroleum so it’s eco-friendly.

Amerisleep AS3 Construction How Much Does the Amerisleep Mattress Cost?

Below are the prices of the mattress as of this writing.

My Amerisleep AS3 Findings

amerisleep as3 sinkage

Here’s another view from the side of the mattress.

as3 side

It’s a minor detail but in my mind, it matters. The zipper system on this mattress is high quality. It’s easy to unzip and the zipper is actually in the middle so you don’t have to lift up the mattress to access it.

as3 zipper

Here’s a picture of the layers of the mattress. Below the blue cover that you see above, there is a fire sock. I removed part of the fire sock to show you these layers. Again, these are cut clean. Some mattresses I have opened are warped towards the corners and don’t fully recover due to the use of too much glue.

Amerisleep uses a plant-based foam in their mattresses to lessen the environmental impact. I’m not sure the exact ratio but it is certainly nice to learn that they are trying to move the needle in the right direction. The foam is an open-cell foam which means more breathability too. This mattress feels amazing and is breathable for an all foam mattress.

as3 layers

Here’s a clip showing motion transfer on the mattress which is basically none because it is a foam mattress.

Here’s a video showing the inside layers of the AS3 and how each reacts. The top layer is a little slower to recover because it provides the most contouring and pressure relief. The recovery is faster than most dense foam mattresses but not quite as fast of a recovery as something like an Avena foam. Basically, you won’t get that stuck feeling and the mattress is really easy to move around on.

My Amerisleep AS3 Recommendation

Amerisleep has a relatively long history in the online mattress space. The fact that they have retail stores in Arizona, Oregon, Texas, and Colorado is a good indicator that they stand by their product. Their 20-year warranty and 100-night sleep trial period also suggest that they are confident you will be impressed with this mattress once you try it. With Amerisleep, you get a company with more than 15,000 positive reviews, a long business history (at least in online mattress brand terms), the ability to try before you buy, and all the benefits of Bio-Pur®, HIVE®, and Celliant® technology.

I particularly recommend the AS3 to sleepers that change positions at night. It rates a true medium on a firmness scale from 1 to 10. Since a medium firmness is suited to most sleep positions, this mattress is very versatile and should be comfortable for all sleepers.

Learn more about the Amerisleep AS3

Off-gassing for the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid can vary slightly, but here’s what you can expect:

  • Initial Off-Gassing: Most reviewers and test sites report a noticeable “new mattress” smell when first unboxing the AS3 Hybrid. This smell is due to the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the production of foam and other materials.
  • Duration: The most noticeable off-gassing typically dissipates within the first 2-3 days. However, a faint odor may linger for up to a week or slightly longer in some cases.
  • Amerisleep’s Recommendation: Amerisleep themselves state that you might notice a smell for up to 4 days.

Tips for Minimizing Off-Gassing:

  • Airing out: Unpack the mattress in a well-ventilated room. Open windows and run a fan if possible.
  • Time: Leave it to air out for a few days or even a week before adding sheets and sleeping on it.

Important Note: Off-gassing is common with new mattresses, especially those containing foam layers. Amerisleep uses plant-based foams and CertiPUR-US® certified materials, which means they meet strict standards for low VOC emissions.

While the core design of the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid has stayed mostly consistent, there have been a few subtle changes worth noting:

  • Name Change: The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid was originally launched under the name “Liberty.” In 2017, Amerisleep simplified their naming system–the AS3’s medium-firm feel fits right in the middle of their numbered scale.
  • Minor Material Updates: Over time, it’s possible that Amerisleep has made slight modifications to the foams or the coil system used in the AS3 Hybrid. These changes would likely be aimed at improving durability, performance, or keeping costs in line. Companies rarely publicize these minor tweaks.
  • Focus on Bio-Pur® Foam: Amerisleep’s marketing has increasingly emphasized their plant-based Bio-Pur® foam. While the AS3 likely always had some degree of this material, they now highlight its benefits in terms of responsiveness and eco-friendliness.

Overall, the evolution of the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid has been about refinement and branding rather than significant overhauls. The core appeal of a medium-firm hybrid mattress with good pressure relief remains at its heart.

AS3 Weight Limit

The official weight limit for the Amerisleep AS3 (and the entire Amerisleep lineup) is 800 lbs for a Queen size mattress. This applies to the total combined weight on the mattress.

It’s important to note:

  • Weight limits are guidelines: While manufacturers test their mattresses for durability, exceeding the weight limit doesn’t mean instant failure. It indicates a higher potential for wear and tear and may void warranty coverage.
  • Needs over limits: If you or your partner are close to or exceed the individual weight recommendations (roughly 400 lbs per person), consider a mattress with a more robust construction specifically designed for heavier individuals—firmer and thicker mattresses are generally better options.

AS3 Weight Limit

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is generally considered a medium-firm mattress, ranking around a 6 or 6.5 on the firmness scale where 1 is incredibly soft and 10 is extremely firm.

Here’s why it’s considered medium-firm:

  • The industry standard for medium-firm is 6.5. The AS3 Hybrid is slightly softer than this benchmark.
  • Comfort layer balance: It features a soft Bio-Pur® foam comfort layer that provides cushioning, plus supportive layers underneath to prevent excessive sinkage.
  • Suits most sleepers: This balanced comfort works well for the majority of people across sleeping positions (side, back, stomach).

Please note: Firmness perception is somewhat subjective. If you’re usually very sensitive to firmness, or on the extremes of the weight spectrum (petite or heavier individuals), your experience might differ slightly.

AS3 Pressure Relief

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid rates very well in terms of pressure relief, especially for side sleepers and those with moderate back pain. Here’s why:

  • Bio-Pur® Foam: Amerisleep’s proprietary plant-based memory foam is known for its responsiveness and pressure-relieving properties. It gently contours to your body, relieving pressure points at the shoulders, hips, and spine.
  • Hybrid Construction: The combination of memory foam with the supportive coil layer helps maintain spinal alignment, a key factor in reducing pressure build-up.
  • Medium-Firm Feel: The AS3’s medium-firmness provides a balance of contouring and support. This ensures you don’t sink in excessively, which can misalign your spine and worsen pressure issues.

Who benefits most:

  • Side sleepers: The AS3 Hybrid’s cushioning and contouring are ideal for side sleepers, reducing pressure on the hips and shoulders.
  • People with back pain: The support and spinal alignment promoted by the AS3 Hybrid may alleviate back pain.
  • Average weight individuals: The firmness level is generally most comfortable and pressure-relieving for people of average weight.

Points to Consider

  • Strictly stomach sleepers: May find a slightly firmer mattress more supportive.
  • Heavier individuals: Might benefit from a mattress specifically designed for heavier bodies for optimal support and pressure relief.

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is generally considered a good mattress for sex due to a few key features:

  • Bounce: The AS3 Hybrid has a moderate level of bounce, thanks to the combination of memory foam and pocketed coils. This bounce allows for easier movement and position changes during intimacy.
  • Responsiveness: The Bio-Pur® memory foam used in the AS3 Hybrid is relatively responsive, meaning it recovers quickly after pressure is applied. This can be beneficial for sex compared to some memory foam mattresses that cause a sinking feeling.
  • Edge Support: The AS3 Hybrid is known to have good edge support, which means the mattress won’t sag significantly when you use the entire surface area. This is important for maneuverability and feeling secure during sex.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Personal preference: While bounce and responsiveness are important factors, some couples may prefer a softer or firmer feel for sex.
  • Noise: Innerspring mattresses, like the AS3 Hybrid, can potentially make noise when compressed or moved on. This may not be a concern for everyone, but it’s worth considering.

Overall Rating:

Based on user reviews and its features, the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid scores high for sex due to its bounce, responsiveness, and edge support. However, remember that mattress preference for intimacy can be subjective.

Here’s a breakdown of how the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid compares to other mattresses on factors you mentioned:

Cooling:

  • Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid: Performs well in cooling thanks to its Bio-Pur® foam’s open-cell structure and pocketed coils that allow for airflow.
  • Similar Options: Saatva Classic and WinkBed also use a combination of breathable materials and coils for good cooling. Leesa Sapira Hybrid might also be a good option.

Motion Transfer:

  • Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid: Very good at isolating motion due to the memory foam layer absorbing movement.
  • Similar Options: Most memory foam and hybrid mattresses excel at motion isolation. Leesa Sapira Hybrid and Nectar Premier are likely on par with the AS3 Hybrid.

Bounce:

  • Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid: Offers moderate bounce due to the combination of memory foam and coils.
  • More Bounce: If you prefer a higher bounce, innerspring mattresses or hybrids with stronger coils might be better. WinkBed offers a wider range of firmness options, some with more bounce.

Edge Support:

  • Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid: Performs well in edge support compared to some memory foam mattresses, thanks to the supportive coil base.
  • Similar Options: Innerspring and hybrid mattresses generally provide better edge support than pure foam mattresses. Saatva Classic and WinkBed are likely comparable to the AS3 Hybrid.

Comfort Material:

  • Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid: Uses Bio-Pur® memory foam for pressure relief and a pocketed coil base for support.
  • Alternatives:
    • Memory Foam: Nectar Premier offers a thicker memory foam layer for a more cradling feel.
    • Innerspring: Saatva Classic uses a traditional innerspring core with a pillow top, offering a classic supportive feel.
    • Latex: Some hybrid mattresses incorporate latex, known for its responsiveness and bounce.

Here are some additional factors to consider when choosing a mattress:

  • Sleeping Position: Side sleepers typically prioritize pressure relief, while back and stomach sleepers might prefer a firmer mattress.
  • Body Weight: Heavier sleepers may benefit from a more robust mattress designed for higher weight capacities.
  • Personal Preference: Softness, bounce, and responsiveness are all subjective preferences.

Where to try the AS3

You have a couple of options for trying out the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress before you commit to a purchase:

  1. 100-Night Sleep Trial: Amerisleep offers a generous 100-night sleep trial with all their mattresses. This means you can order the AS3 Hybrid and try it out at home for an extended period. If you decide it’s not the right fit, Amerisleep will arrange for a free pickup and provide a full refund.

  2. Amerisleep Showrooms: Amerisleep has showroom locations in several states, including Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, and Texas. You can visit one of these showrooms and test the AS3 Hybrid in person.

Here’s how the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is likely to perform for different sleeping positions:

Side Sleepers:

  • Pros: The AS3 Hybrid’s medium-firmness provides excellent pressure relief for shoulders and hips, minimizing discomfort common in side sleeping. The memory foam conforms to the body’s curves for cushioning support.
  • Cons: Some very petite side sleepers might find it slightly too firm for maximum comfort.

Back Sleepers:

  • Pros: The balance between support and cushioning makes it a suitable option for many back sleepers. It promotes healthy spinal alignment and offers good pressure relief for the lower back.
  • Cons: Very strict back sleepers who prefer a noticeably firmer feel might want to consider the AS2 or AS1 from Amerisleep.

Stomach Sleepers:

  • Pros: The supportive coil system helps keep hips elevated, preventing excessive spinal curvature often experienced by stomach sleepers.
  • Cons: Some stomach sleepers, particularly heavier individuals, might prefer a firmer mattress for greater support at the hips to maintain proper alignment.

Combination Sleepers:

  • Pros: The AS3 Hybrid’s versatility makes it comfortable for those who switch between positions. The support and pressure relief work well in different sleeping styles.

Overall: The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid’s medium-firm feel makes it a great choice for most sleeping positions, particularly side, back, and combination sleepers.

Important to remember: Mattress comfort is somewhat subjective. Factors like your individual body weight and specific needs can influence how the AS3 Hybrid feels for your particular sleeping style.

Magic Linen Duvet: Stunning Comfort for Effortless Sleep

Magic Linen Review

Magic Linen Duvet Review

Experience Blissful Comfort with Magic Linen

When it comes to achieving the perfect night’s sleep, the right bedding can make all the difference. In this Magic Linen duvet review, I delve into my experience with a gray-blue linen duvet set from MagicLinen, a small family-run business based in Vilnius, Lithuania. Although the presentation was modest, the quality of the product is what truly matters.

Unpacking the Magic Linen Experience

Upon receiving the duvet set, I noticed the packaging was simple—a neat bundle tied with a ribbon, all enclosed in a standard brown box. While presentation isn’t everything, I do appreciate when a brand puts effort into the unboxing experience. That said, MagicLinen compensates for this with their commitment to quality and environmentally friendly practices. The fact that they manage to ship internationally for just $15 is a notable bonus.

The Craftsmanship Behind Magic Linen Duvets

MagicLinen’s products are crafted from the finest European flax fibers, stone-washed for a soft, inviting feel. Linen is renowned for its unparalleled breathability, making it an ideal choice for all seasons. It keeps you cool during warmer months yet provides cozy warmth in winter. One of the standout features of linen is its ability to absorb moisture and quickly release it, helping you stay comfortable throughout the night.

Contrary to common misconceptions, linen is not scratchy or irritating; in fact, it possesses unique hypoallergenic and anti-microbial properties. This natural fabric acts as an antiseptic, efficiently combating bacteria and fungi, which can significantly improve your skin health, especially if you’re prone to conditions like eczema or rashes.

First Impressions: Softness Meets Style

Upon unboxing, the duvet cover and pillowcases felt remarkably different compared to the cotton sheets I had been accustomed to. They weren’t scratchy at all; in fact, I was pleasantly surprised by their soft texture. The duvet cover features charming wooden buttons at the foot, and handy tie-ins ensure your duvet stays securely in place.

Following the care instructions—washing on a cold cycle and tumble drying on low—I found that the items emerged with some wrinkles, which is characteristic of linen fabric. While initially off-putting, the slight wrinkling only adds to the duvet’s charm rather than detracts from it.

Creating a Luxurious Sleep Environment

Laying down on my freshly made bed was an immediate joy. Although there’s no ocean view from my home, the aesthetic and feel of the linen transformed my bedroom into a serene retreat reminiscent of a Nantucket beach getaway. As I settled in and started binge-watching “New Girl,” I felt a tranquil warmth envelop me, quite unlike the cold, synthetic experience of my previous duvet.

What’s more, the combination of MagicLinen bedding with my Homestead cotton sheets created a comforting sleep environment that vastly improved my rest. No more waking in the night, fumbling for the fan, or tossing off the duvet in frustration. Instead, I drifted off into peaceful slumber, a feat I have struggled with in the past.

Is Magic Linen Worth the Investment?

Priced at $206, the Magic Linen duvet set is undoubtedly an investment in quality. While it may be higher than the average price for a 3-piece duvet set, which ranges from $40 to $110, the unique craftsmanship and sustainable practices justify the cost.

MagicLinen prides itself on being rooted in centuries-old Baltic linen traditions, ensuring that every piece is made using high-quality, OEKO-tex certified linen. All items are handcrafted by skilled tailors, making the supply chain ethical—an important consideration in today’s market.

Conclusion: Embrace the Magic of Linen

If you wish to elevate your sleep experience, reminiscent of idyllic summer escapes, I wholeheartedly recommend splurging on a Magic Linen duvet set. From its remarkable texture to its sustainable production, this duvet set is more than just bedding; it’s a step towards improved well-being and relaxation. I eagerly anticipate trying their sheets in the future, as I can only imagine they will deliver the same level of excellence.
