What Is TENCEL Lyocell?
TENCEL is a Lenzing trademark. TENCEL Lyocell is a branded regenerated-cellulose fiber made primarily from wood pulp using Lenzing’s lyocell production process.
How TENCEL Lyocell is made
Lenzing dissolves wood pulp in an organic solvent and spins the cellulose back into fiber. Lenzing states that more than 99.8% of the solvent is recovered and reused in its closed-loop lyocell process.
How it feels in bedding
Lyocell is generally smooth, drapey and good at moisture uptake. Finished sheets can still vary widely because yarn size, weave, fabric weight and finishing influence feel as much as the fiber name.
TENCEL vs viscose
See our Viscose vs Rayon, Eucalyptus Sheets Guide, and Bedding Hub.
What to check on a TENCEL sheet label
Look for the actual fiber percentage, the TENCEL or lyocell wording, the weave, pocket depth and care instructions. A listing that only says “eucalyptus” or “bamboo-like” does not tell you enough about the finished fabric. The same fiber can feel different in sateen, twill or other constructions.
Who may prefer lyocell
Lyocell can be a good fit for sleepers who like a smooth, drapey sheet and dislike the crisp feel of percale. If you prefer a dry, textured hand, linen may suit you better. If you want a heavier, silkier cotton feel, compare sateen.
