Spoon Mattress: Must-Have Hybrid for Effortless Comfort

4 FlexSupportBaseFoam

The Spoon Sleep mattress is a hybrid mattress that combines the pressure relief of memory foam with the support of innerspring coils. It is designed to provide a balance of comfort and support for all sleep positions, and is particularly well-suited for back sleepers.

The mattress is made up of five layers:

  • Climate Cool Touch Cover: This cover dissipates excess heat to keep sleepers cool and comfortable.
  • Rely Foam: This layer of foam provides a medium-firm sleep surface with good responsiveness.
  • Spoon Pillar Technology: This layer of foam cylinders is strategically placed to provide pressure relief and support.
  • Serene Foam: This layer of foam is designed to be more breathable than memory foam, and it also helps to prevent heat buildup.
  • Quantum® Edge Elite Steel Perimeter: This perimeter provides edge support and prevents sleepers from rolling off the bed.

The Spoon Sleep mattress is available in a variety of sizes and firmness levels, so sleepers can find the perfect mattress for their needs. It also comes with a 100-night sleep trial, so sleepers can try it out before they commit to buying it.

Here is an overview of the pros and cons of the Spoon Sleep mattress:

Pros:

  • Provides a good balance of comfort and support
  • Good pressure relief
  • Good edge support
  • Available in a variety of sizes and firmness levels
  • Comes with a 100-night sleep trial

Cons:

  • Some sleepers may find the mattress to be too soft
  • The mattress can be heavy and difficult to move

Overall, the Spoon Sleep mattress is a good option for sleepers who are looking for a hybrid mattress that provides a balance of comfort and support. It is also a good option for sleepers who are looking for a mattress with good edge support.

The Spoon Mattress is a memory foam mattress with foam cylinders inside that act like inner springs. In fact they are in some ways superior to inner springs because they are less prone to breaking down and have much less motion transfer but still provide a little bit of bounce. People looking for an all foam mattress but don’t want to deal with the motion transfer issues commonly associated with springs, the Spoon mattress is definitely worth considering.

Overview of the Spoon Mattress

You can buy the Spoon Mattress exclusively through their website. This mattress is made in the USA and will ship to your door about 5 business days after ordering.  Below is a picture of the box that houses the mattress.

How Much does the Spoon Mattress Cost?

Below are the prices of the mattress for each size:

Twin  $700
Twin XL $800
Full $900
Queen $1,100
King $1,300
Cal King $1,300

Below is a video explaining some of the general features of the mattress.

Construction of the Spoon Sleep Mattress

This video from the Spoon website does a great job of explaining how the mattress is constructed. It is not your typical 3 layer foam mattress. The foam pillars inside are what really set this mattress apart.

Here’s a picture of the inside of the mattress. As you can see it looks like a typical mattress but when you dig deeper you will find the pillars inside.

what is a spoon mattress

Here’s a breakdown of each of the layers of the mattress.

LIVESMART COVER

Innovative technology that surrounds each fiber on the cover to repel spills before they turn into stains.

Benefits:
• Spoon’s spill-resistant cover guards your mattress while allowing for airflow.
Specs:
• Top Cover – 89%POLYESTER, 11%RAYON
• Border  Cover – 98%POLYESTER, 2%LYCRA

COOLING COMFORT LAYER

The cooling comfort layer is an open cell urethane that is inherently cool. The layer enhances the breathability of the mattress creating a cool and satisfying environment.

Benefits:
• Top layer used to enhance a cool sleeping environment
• Pressure point relief
Specs:
• 2lb density, ILD 15
• Height : 2 inches

MEMORY FOAM TRANSITIONAL LAYER

We use a fast responding memory foam in our second layer for contouring to your natural curves.

Benefits:
• We purposely use memory foam as our second layer to prevent our mattress from sleeping hot.
• Pressure point relief
• Memory foam quickly adjusts to your body as you find that perfect sleep position.
Specs:
• 4lb density, infused with gel for cooling
• Height : 2 inches

SUPPORT PILLAR FOAM

Spoon support pillars are placed strategically in the mattress to provide pressure point management. This high density foam contours your body even after hundreds of thousands of compressions.

Benefits:
• Pressure point relief
• Back support
Specs:
• 7lb density, ILD proprietary
• Height : 3 inches

Below is a picture from their website which shows placement of the foam pillars.

My Spoon Sleep Findings

Overall I found this mattress to be more of a medium firm feel. You definitely get good support from the foam pillars underneath.

Here’s a video that shows how each layer responds to pressure.

I also poured some water on the top of the mattress to test the water resistant cover. True to claims, it beaded quickly and stayed that way for a while. This made it easy to clean up without the water setting in.

Having a cover like this is nice because you can get away with not needing a mattress protector. However, if this is for a child that still may be prone to wetting the bed, then I would still add a protector for safety.

I received an individual pillar when I opened the box.

spoon sleep wrapper pillar

The pillar itself is really firm. Below is a video that shows how quickly it bounces back and this will emulate an inner spring.

The mattress performs about average for heat retention. I think the water proof barrier may make it a bit less breathable than most knit covers I have tested.

As for motion transfer, you do get a little bounce in part from the pillars and also because they don’t use as dense of foam on the top layer in comparison to some of the other online brands I have tried.

My Spoon Sleep Recommendation

The Spoon Sleep mattress is not just another memory foam mattress in a box. This product has brought some true innovation to market and I think customers will welcome it. People looking for the pressure relief that only memory foam can provide along with some of the feel reminiscent of a traditional spring mattress will enjoy the Spoon mattress.

The Nectar Mattress Foundation stands out as a top choice for both Nectar mattresses and a variety of other brands. Overview of the Nectar Foundation

Available for purchase directly from the Nectar website, the Nectar Foundation is designed and manufactured in the USA, ensuring quick shipping and high-quality craftsmanship. If you find yourself struggling with bulky and unwieldy furniture, the Nectar Foundation’s manageable packaging is a game changer.

Once the box is in your bedroom, setting up the foundation is an absolute breeze. No tools are required, allowing you to move directly from unboxing to assembly in just a few minutes. This user-friendly approach saves you time and frustration, ensuring that you can focus on getting a good night’s sleep rather than wrestling with complicated instructions.

Pricing of the Nectar Foundation

Affordability is another strong point of the Nectar Foundation. Here’s a breakdown of the current prices for each size available:

Twin: $190
Twin XL: $190

If you ever need to move, the Nectar Foundation disassembles easily, making it a practical solution for frequent relocators or those living in apartments.

Support is mainly provided through sturdy wooden slats, which simply rest in the grooves along the sides of the foundation. This design ensures your mattress receives the support it needs without compromising airflow, contributing to a healthier sleeping environment.

While the Nectar Foundation is the perfect match for Nectar mattresses, it can also complement a wide range of other online mattresses. Its ease of setup and disassembly, paired with its aesthetic appeal, makes it a versatile choice for any bedding arrangement. Puffy Mattress: Stunning Comfort for Effortless Sleep

Puffy Mattress 1

Puffy Mattress Review: Sleeping on a Cloud?

The Puffy Mattress has rapidly risen to prominence in the mattress market, capturing the attention of sleep enthusiasts everywhere. As a newer online brand, it offers an inviting alternative to traditional mattress shopping. I recently had the opportunity to test the queen-size Puffy mattress, and I’m ready to share my experience. With its straightforward two-layer construction and a focus on softness, the Puffy aims to provide a cozy night’s sleep. Below are my detailed findings and recommendations regarding this popular option.

Unboxing and First Impressions of the Puffy Mattress

The Puffy Mattress is part of a growing trend where companies deliver mattresses directly to your doorstep in a compact box. The current price for a queen-size model is $950, positioning it slightly above average compared to similar mattresses in the market. However, the investment comes with a substantial benefit: a generous 101-night sleep trial. If you find it’s not quite for you, returning it is hassle-free with a full refund policy.

Upon opening the box, you’ll discover that the mattress is neatly wrapped in plastic, ensuring it remains protected during transit. Unboxing is a simple task; carefully cut the plastic, and watch as the mattress expands to its full shape. Here’s a glimpse of the Puffy Mattress a few hours post-unboxing, complete with the signature Puffy clouds embroidered into the fabric.

The mattress features a sleek border adorned with the Puffy logo, adding a touch of style.

For a deeper dive into its feel and performance, check out this video overview showcasing the bounce and overall experience of the Puffy. With its two-layer makeup, the top layer consists of denser foam, while the base layer delivers traditional support with its standard foam. Notably, the mattress has a washable zippered cover, making it easy to maintain hygiene. Regular washing is manageable, but exercise caution with heat to prevent shrinking, which can complicate the reassembly process. I typically recommend using a mattress protector rather than frequent cover washing for optimal care.

Understanding the Construction of the Puffy Mattress

Key Components of the Puffy Mattress

Now let’s examine what’s inside this cloud-like mattress. The construction details reveal two foam layers designed for comfort and support:

Puffy’s Cooling Cloud™ Foam: This top layer features gel-infused visco polyurethane foam (non-latex), crafted using Variable Pressure Foaming (VPF). It’s 3 inches thick and boasts a density of 2.5 PCF CertiPUR-US certification, promoting both safety and comfort.

Firm Core Support Foam: The base layer is comprised of 7 inches of polyurethane foam (non-latex), utilizing VPF techniques, with a density of 1.5 PCF. This creates a robust foundation for the mattress.

PCF stands for Pounds per Cubic Foot, a key indicator of foam density.

My Hands-On Experience with the Puffy Mattress

During my testing, I found the Puffy Mattress to lean towards the softer side of the spectrum. Despite having only two layers, it delivers an impressive transition, eliminating the sensation of hitting the base layer when you settle in. A video captures the mattress’ responsiveness, illustrating how the top layer reacts slowly, providing pressure relief where you need it most.

One standout aspect is motion transfer; this mattress minimizes disruptions effectively, making it an ideal choice for couples. The design appears to purposely limit bounce, enhancing your sleep experience without unwanted disturbances.

To further illustrate comfort, I conducted a bowling ball test. The ball sank pleasantly into the surface, demonstrating how well the Puffy cradles the body, offering significant pressure relief. Additionally, I utilized a thermal camera in another video to assess heat retention, and the Puffy surprisingly managed heat well considering its construction.

Final Thoughts on the Puffy Mattress

In summary, the Puffy Mattress presents itself as a plush and conforming option, ideal for those who appreciate a softer sleep experience. However, at a price point of $950 for a queen size, it falls on the higher spectrum of affordability. Its straightforward construction typically suggests that a mattress at this price level would feature at least three layers. Nevertheless, the Puffy transitions beautifully, defying the simplicity of its design.

For heavier sleepers, I recommend exploring thicker mattresses to ensure adequate support and avoid the risk of bottoming out. Personally, at 190 lbs, I didn’t encounter this issue, but those beyond that weight may want to consider alternatives for added peace of mind.

Cotton and Care: Stunning Sheets You’ll Love Forever!

Cotton and Care Sheets

Cotton & Care Sheets Review

Cotton and Care: A Journey into Quality Bedding

In a marketplace filled with various bedding brands, Cotton and Care stands out as a recent entrant, dedicated to offering high-quality sheets made in the USA. While the brand is no longer in operation as of January 2020, its legacy of providing luxurious Supima cotton sheets left an impact worth discussing. I recently received a complimentary king-size sheet set for review, and I was eager to dive into its features and benefits.

Understanding Supima Cotton

Before we delve deeper into the specifics of Cotton and Care sheets, it’s essential to understand what Supima cotton is. Supima cotton is an extra-long staple cotton, exclusively grown in the United States. This premium quality cotton is renowned for its strength and durability, which make it more resistant to tearing and pulling compared to regular cotton.

The standard fiber length of conventional cotton is approximately one inch, whereas Supima cotton averages around 1.4 inches. This slight difference contributes significantly to the fabric’s resilience and luxurious feel. While Egyptian cotton also boasts extra-long staple fibers, much of what is marketed as Egyptian cotton can be misleading. Thus, when purchasing sheets, it’s crucial to ensure you’re getting genuine quality, which Cotton and Care proudly offered.

Overview and Unboxing: What to Expect

Founded by husband and wife duo Evan and Lisa from Las Vegas, Cotton and Care was born from a shared passion for quality sleep. As self-described sleep enthusiasts, they created a brand that not only enhances your sleeping experience but also makes a positive impact on the world.

What truly sets Cotton and Care apart is its commitment to philanthropy. The brand partnered with Water.org to ensure that over 50% of its profits would help provide safe water sources to those in need. Given that Water.org can offer clean water to individuals for as little as $25, your investment in these sheets extended far beyond your bedroom.

Upon ordering, your Cotton and Care sheets would arrive within roughly a week, beautifully packaged and enhancing the unboxing experience. The set comes in a carefully designed box, accompanied by a welcome letter that adds a personal touch.

Cotton and Care Sheets: A Great Value

In my assessment, the Cotton and Care sheets represent exceptional value. The luxurious experience of Supima cotton at a competitive price makes these sheets a worthwhile investment. Below are the prices across various sizes:

– Twin: $119
– Twin XL: $119
– Full: $139
– Queen: $149
– King: $159
– California King: $159

Each set includes:

– A flat sheet
– A fitted sheet
– Two pillowcases (with Twin and Twin XL including one)

The fitted sheet boasts heavy-duty elastic, ensuring a snug fit on your mattress up to 16 inches deep. These sheets are pre-washed and machine washable, promising a fabric that continues to soften with every wash while maintaining their breathability.

The Feel of Cotton and Care Sheets

Upon first touch, these sheets feel light and smooth against the skin. Initially, they may come off as slightly stiff, but this stiffness dissipates quickly with use. With a 250-thread count, they may fall on the lower end compared to other luxury sheets, yet this contributes to their breathability—making them perfect for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Attention to Detail

Cotton and Care takes pride in its American roots, as indicated by the Made in the USA label proudly displayed on the sheets. The craftsmanship is evident in the neat stitching and overall construction, reinforcing a commitment to quality.

Currently, the sheets are available only in white, but given the growing popularity of the brand, we anticipate a broader range of colors may be introduced in the future.

Conclusion: Elevate Your Sleep Experience with Cotton and Care

In summary, while Cotton and Care may no longer be operational, the quality of its sheets remains worthy of recognition. Made from luxurious Supima cotton, these sheets promise comfort, breathability, and a long lifespan, making them a great addition to any bedroom. Moreover, supporting brands that give back offers not just quality sleep but also the peace of mind that comes from making a difference in the world. Though you can no longer purchase Cotton and Care sheets, their commitment to quality and philanthropy serves as a reminder of the values that should guide future bedding purchases.

How Long Does A Mattress Last?

dynasty rv mattress

Mattresses are expensive. Whether you are buying a regular mattress or a bed-in-a-box, you are not only investing a lot of money into it, but also expecting it to offer value for money. But to be able to offer full value for your money, the mattress has to last. So how long exactly does a mattress last?

Unfortunately, there is no one answer to this. The lifespan of a mattress varies depending on the type of mattress, quality of material, kind of use and care. By lifespan we mean how long the mattress can retain most of its original support and comfort. In case you didn’t know, the lifespan of a mattress affects us in a number of ways. A recent research on back pain found that worn-out mattresses can make the condition worse, while another research by the Oklahoma State University found sleep quality to be better when an old mattress is replaced with a new one.

What is the average lifespan of a mattress?

Mattresses usually last long enough before needing to be replaced. Depending upon the material, some mattresses may wear out sooner than others. However, when the mattress is made of high quality material, it tends to last anywhere between 7 and 10 years, and proper care can increase its lifespan well beyond ten years. Mattresses should usually be replaced every ten years if they get worn out.

Numerous factors contribute to the lifespan of a mattress, such as its construction, materials used, usage patterns, and maintenance. Higher-quality mattresses made with durable materials and superior craftsmanship tend to last longer than their lower-quality counterparts. Additionally, mattresses subjected to regular and proper maintenance, such as rotating and flipping, can experience prolonged lifespans.

However, it is essential to note that the lifespan of a mattress is not solely determined by a specific time frame. Individual factors, such as body weight, sleeping habits, and personal comfort preferences, can also impact a mattress’s longevity. Heavier individuals or those who frequently engage in activities like jumping on the bed may experience accelerated wear and tear, reducing the mattress’s lifespan.

Furthermore, mattresses are subject to wear and tear over time due to factors beyond user control, such as the natural aging of materials and exposure to environmental conditions. Therefore, even with careful maintenance, it is recommended to assess the condition of a mattress regularly and consider replacing it if signs of sagging, discomfort, or diminished support are evident.

Investing in a high-quality mattress can provide individuals with a comfortable and restorative sleep experience for an extended period. By understanding the average lifespan of a mattress and considering personal factors, individuals can make informed decisions when purchasing a new mattress, ensuring they receive the best value for their investment in a good night’s sleep.

Different materials make the average lifespan of a mattress vary. Some of the common mattress types and their average lifespan are as follows:

Latex: Mattresses made of latex are superior to all other types, and usually last the longest. The average lifespan of a latex mattress is 15 years, and the layers can be replaced when they wear out. Moreover, to maintain uniform wear, the layers of a latex mattress can be flipped.

Memory foam: On an average, a memory foam mattress lasts about ten years. Even though it sags less than the other types, it needs to be flipped regularly to prolong longevity.

Waterbed mattress: Since these mattresses don’t have springs that can break with wear, they tend to last a little longer than regular mattresses. The lifespan of a waterbed mattress is usually no more than seven to nine years, even with proper maintenance.

Spring mattress: These mattresses are supported by coil springs that break with use and make the mattress sag. Even the best quality spring mattresses don’t last past seven or eight years with proper care.

Hybrid mattress: This type of mattress uses a pocketed coil support core and a comfort layer like latex or memory foam. On an average, a hybrid mattress can last up to six years if properly cared for, though the longevity depends upon the quality of material used to make the core.

What does mattress longevity depend on?

There are several factors that influence mattress longevity. They are:

Use: The more a mattress is used, the shorter it will last. Similarly, mattresses that are occasionally used (like a guest bed) will have a longer lifespan. The types of activities the mattress is used for also determine its lifespan to a certain extent. For instance, putting heavy objects on the bed can make it sag sooner than normal. Spilling food or drink on the bed can also weaken the material and shorten the lifespan of the mattress.

Weight: The pressure applied on a mattress affects its lifespan. Heavier people exert more pressure on a mattress, leading to sinkage and sagging, whereas lighter people exert less pressure, extending the lifespan of a mattress.

Care: Proper maintenance of a mattress extends the lifespan of a mattress by getting rid of dust, dirt, and germs. Putting a top sheet and changing it every couple of days ensures the longevity of a mattress.

When to replace a mattress?

There are some telltale signs that a mattress needs to be replaced. Some of the most common ones are sagging, bumps, lumps, and tears. Aside from that, there are physical signs that let you know it is time to change your mattress. Sleeping on an old, worn-out mattress deprives your body of support and comfort, resulting in aches and pains. Mattresses also tend to attract allergens, and it happens more when a mattress becomes old. Allergies, asthma, and other similar problems can result from sleeping on an old mattress.

On average, a quality mattress lasts 5 to 10 years. But with proper cleaning and care, the lifespan can be extended for a few more years.

How can I tell if I need a new mattress?

There isn’t a universally applicable life expectancy for a mattress because it largely depends on the quality, type, and the amount and type of use it gets. However, most experts suggest replacing your mattress every 7-10 years. But knowing when to say goodbye to your old mattress can be a tricky task. Here are some indicators that it might be time for an upgrade.

  1. You’re Not Sleeping Well: One of the most telltale signs is a decline in the quality of your sleep. If you’re tossing and turning throughout the night or waking up tired and achy, your mattress might not be offering the support and comfort you need. Everyone has an occasional restless night, but if it becomes a consistent pattern, it’s time to consider a new mattress.

  2. Visible Signs of Wear and Tear: Over time, a mattress can develop visible signs of aging like lumps, sagging, or even springs poking through the surface. If you notice any of these signs, it is definitely time for a replacement. Your mattress should maintain a consistent shape and firmness across its entire surface.

  3. Allergies or Asthma Worsening: Over time, mattresses can become home to dust mites, mold, and other allergens. If you’ve noticed a recent increase in allergy symptoms or asthma attacks and you’ve ruled out other potential causes, your mattress might be to blame.

  4. Your Body Has Changed: Changes in your health or weight might necessitate a new mattress. For example, people with more body mass need a firmer mattress to support them properly, while people with chronic pain or aging bodies might need something softer or with more support.

  5. You’re More Comfortable Elsewhere: If you find that you sleep better in a hotel bed or even on a friend’s couch, it could be an indication that your mattress is no longer comfortable.

  6. It’s More Than 7-10 Years Old: While there’s no exact expiry date, the National Sleep Foundation recommends replacing your mattress every 7-10 years. This timeline can vary depending on how well you care for your mattress and how often you use it, but it’s a good baseline to keep in mind.

Keep in mind that a good mattress is key to good sleep, and good sleep is key to overall health. So, investing in a new mattress when needed is not just an investment in your comfort, but also in your wellness.

Eight Sleep Pillow: The Best Customizable Comfort Solution

Eight Sleep Adjustable Pillow

Unpacking the Eight Sleep Pillow: A Glimpse Into the Future of Bedding

In an age where technology intersects with almost every aspect of our lives, even our pillows are not exempt. Enter the Eight Sleep Pillow – a product that promises to revolutionize how we perceive comfort. But is it just another tech fad, or does it genuinely offer a novel sleeping experience? Let’s delve deeper.

1. What is the Eight Sleep Pillow?

Eight Sleep, a company known for its pioneering efforts in sleep technology, has introduced a pillow that combines traditional comfort with modern innovation. While not a “smart” pillow in the sense of being connected to apps or devices, the Eight Sleep Pillow is designed with advanced materials to cater to various sleepers’ needs.

2. Customizable Comfort:

One of the standout features of the Eight Sleep Pillow is its customizable design. Many sleep experts argue that there’s no “one size fits all” when it comes to pillows. Recognizing this, Eight Sleep has developed a pillow that allows users to adjust its height and firmness, catering to back, side, and stomach sleepers alike.

3. Advanced Materials:

Beyond customization, the pillow boasts a range of advanced materials. Memory foam, known for its pressure-relieving properties, is a staple. However, Eight Sleep has taken it a step further by introducing cooling gel-infused foams and hypoallergenic materials to ensure a refreshing and allergen-free sleep.

4. Sustainability Matters:

In a nod to growing environmental concerns, the Eight Sleep Pillow also emphasizes sustainability. From the sourcing of materials to production processes, there’s a clear commitment to minimizing environmental impact.

5. Price Point and Availability:

While the Eight Sleep Pillow sits at a higher price point than your average pillow, many argue that its innovative features and durability offer good value for money. It’s available on the company’s website and through select retailers.

The Eight Sleep pillow is a pillow that you can adjust to your specific preferences. It has three layers inside the shell that can be switched around or removed to get the perfect amount of loft and comfort. A standard size Eight Sleep pillow retails for $75 and can be purchased direct through their website.

Overview of the Eight Sleep Pillow

This pillow comes with a 30 day guarantee where if you don’t like it, you can return it for a refund. Your pillow should arrive about a week after placing your order.

Construction of the Eight Sleep Pillow

Below are the construction details of the pillow as listed on the Eight Sleep website.

Pillow Cover

  • Made from breathable cotton.
  • Includes sewn-in layer of shredded polyester for extra cushioning.
  • Has a side zipper so it can easily be removed and cleaned.

1” Memory foam

  • The dense material prevents your neck from bending, keeping your spine aligned.
  • It molds to the shape of your head
  • Contours to your neck so you don’t wake up pain.

2” Cushion and 1″ Cushion

  • The insertable cushions contain shredded pieces of foam.
  • They provide the pillow with a fluffy and cloud-like feel without sacrificing support.
  • Shredded foam lets you form the pillow to your needs.
  • Stays cool at night by increasing airflow and breathability throughout.

My Eight Sleep Pillow Findings

This pillow should have broad appeal. When you sleep on the shredded foam side, it feels like a down pillow. I found it to have a good amount of loft for side sleeping. I have broad shoulders and this still supported my head adequately. People with smaller frames can take out the the memory foam layer or the other shredded foam layer to reduce the loft.

If you prefer more of a solid memory foam feel, you can just flip the pillow to the side which has the solid piece of memory foam for a firmer feel.

Below is a video that shows how each of the three layers respond.

Here’s a side view with the cover unzipped to show you each of the layers.

My Eight Sleep Pillow Recommendation

I think Eight sleep has done a good job of striking a balance between a traditional and foam pillow feel. People interested in trying a foam pillow but are still attached to the feel of a traditional down or even polyester feel will be able to easily adapt to this one.

This pillow is very breathable and light for a memory foam pillow. Also with a 30 day trial, it’s definitely worth trying. Most companies will design their pillows to work well with their mattress and this one is no exception. This pillow works great with the compliment of mattresses offered by Eight sleep. Just like this pillow, their mattresses incorporate next generation memory foam that is responsive and more breathable so pairing the two will give you a consistent feel from head to toe.

Langham Chicago Hotel Mattress and Sleep Review

Langham Hotel Chicago

Tale of Two Architects: The Langham Hotel Chicago’s Rich History

The Langham, Chicago, isn’t just a contemporary luxury hotel; it’s a fascinating tapestry woven from architectural ingenuity, modern vision, and a respect for heritage. Its story intertwines with the works of two renowned architects, each leaving an indelible mark on the Windy City skyline.

Chapter 1: The Visionary Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1971)

In 1971, the legendary modernist architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, designed the iconic AMA Plaza, a 52-story skyscraper overlooking the Chicago River. Known for his minimalist approach and emphasis on clean lines and functionality, Mies van der Rohe’s design became a hallmark of Chicago’s modern architectural landscape. The building, originally IBM’s regional headquarters, was lauded for its innovative use of steel and glass, its elegant simplicity, and its seamless integration with the urban environment.

Chapter 2: Transformation and Rebirth (2013)

Fast forward to 2013. The AMA Plaza, already a Chicago landmark, underwent a meticulous transformation into The Langham, Chicago. The Langham Hospitality Group, known for its heritage hotels and impeccable service, saw the potential in Mies van der Rohe’s masterpiece and embarked on a project that would preserve the building’s architectural legacy while infusing it with modern luxury.

The result was a seamless blend of old and new. The hotel’s interiors pay homage to Mies van der Rohe’s minimalist aesthetic, featuring clean lines, natural materials, and expansive windows that showcase the breathtaking cityscape. Yet, it also boasts touches of contemporary elegance, with custom-designed furniture, plush fabrics, and state-of-the-art amenities.

A Legacy of Hospitality and Modern Chic

Today, The Langham, Chicago stands as a testament to the enduring power of great architecture and its ability to evolve with time. It’s a place where guests can experience the timeless elegance of Mies van der Rohe’s vision alongside the modern comforts and impeccable service that are synonymous with the Langham name.

Beyond the Building: A Touch of Hollywood Royalty

The Langham, Chicago’s story doesn’t end with its architecture. It has also become a favorite among celebrities and dignitaries, from Oprah Winfrey and Angelina Jolie to the British Royal Family. In 2011, Prince William and Kate Middleton held a pre-wedding reception at the hotel, further solidifying its reputation as a haven for luxury and exclusivity.

Whether you’re a history buff, a design enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates exquisite hospitality, The Langham, Chicago has something to offer. It’s a place where the past and present meet in perfect harmony, creating an unforgettable experience for every guest.

The Langham Hotel in Chicago at 330 N. Wabash opened it 2013 and was named best hotel 2017 by U.S. News and World Report. It was previously known as the IBM building. The building was added to the National Register of Historic places in 2010.

The Room

I stayed in a Deluxe Premier room. Here are some of the ammenities of this type of room as listed on their website:

ROOM

  • Dark walnut dressing and vanity parlour
  • 55-inch LCD HD-television
  • Complimentary in-room coffee and tea
  • Cellarette with fully-stocked private bar
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Oversized executive work desk
  • Accessible Room available upon request

BED AND BATH

  • Signature Blissful Bed
  • Chuan Spa bath amenities
  • Botticino Fiorito marble, Alaskan White granite, and Travertine bathroom
  • Deep soaking tub and rainfall shower
  • “Reveal” opaque privacy glass at a touch of a button

SERVICES

  • 24-hour concierge services
  • In-room dining services
  • Valet and laundry services

My room at the Langham was $500 per night which is very pricey so I was expecting the accomodations to live up to the price tag. Here’s a picture of the room.

Langham Hotel Chicago

My room had a king size bed with a 55 inch tv. There’s a mini bar along with a Nespresso machine. I don’t normally drink espresso but since this is such a fancy hotel, I think it calls for it.

Langham Nespresso

Near the desk you get a terminal to connect your computer to the TV via HDMI, etc. which is awesome if you want to stream Netflix from your computer.

The bathroom is just as fancy. It has a large soaking tub and separate shower. You also get Chuan Spa shampoo, conditioner and soap. The Chuan Spa is located on the 4th floor of the hotel

Chuan Hotel Shampoo

Having a soaking tub can really help with your sleep experience as it helps you relax before bedtime.

If a bath isn’t your thing, you can head down to the pool and hot tub to relax a bit. The pool is gorgeous and has great views of the city.

The Langham Hotel Mattress

My Bed at the Langham wasn’t anything super special. I found it to be a bit firm. According to the Tag, it is a Beautyrest mattress. Here’s a picture of the bed itself.

Langham Hotel Bed

The sheets weren’t anything special either but that’s to be expected for all hotels as they are constantly washed for new guests and they cycle through sheet much faster than you would in your home.

I was heartened to see that the mattress had a mattress protector around it to keep bed bugs out and even a tamper proof lock.

Langham Mattress ProtectorThe pillows that come on your mattress are varied. I believe some are down but others are simply a polyester fill. You get an extra pillow in the closet which I found to be a polyester fill pillow.

Langham hotel spare pillow

I only stayed one night at the langham. Here are some things to keep in mind regarding my sleep experience.

Pros

The room was quiet despite being in the middle of the city. You can still hear occasional sirens and horns but overall it was a quiet experience after I turned on my whitenoise app on my phone.

The curtains kept the room dark. Dark enough for me to sleep in until 9am without being woken up by sunlight.

The rooms are very clean and spacious. The ceilings are higher than why you would typically find making the space feel bigger too.

A soaking tub made me relaxed and helped me to fall asleep sooner.

There are control panels next to the nightstands where you can turn off and on lights in varous rooms. No need to fidget for a switch

The HVAC is quiet and the thermostat is intuitive.

Cons

There are lots of ambient lights in the room when you turn of the lights proper. Such as led lights from the cable tv box and even the lights from the control panel next to the night stand are a little too bright for me.

The mattress is a bit too firm for me as a side sleeper and someone who prefer as softer mattress overall.

I was a little underwhelmed by the polyester spare pillow. However you can ask for a memory foam or even a lavender infused pillow to be brought up to your room.

Our room came with a Bose sound wave speaker but the bluetooth connector was missing the charger so I couldn’t use it to broadcast whitenoise which would have also helped.

Langham hotel bose

My Langham Hotel Recommendation

Overall I enjoyed my stay at the Langham. I would have like to use the Bose radio and a softer mattress would have helped me get a better sleep but the cleanliness and beauty of the hotel along with a nice bath really made me relax. It’s in a great spot for walking to major tourist attractions.

People that want to sleep on a firmer mattress will definitely enjoy this hotel while side sleepers or anyone who craves a softer sleep experience may want to look elsewhere.

Langham Chicago Complaints

While The Langham Chicago is generally well-regarded for its luxury accommodations, impeccable service, and stunning architecture, like any hotel, it has also received its fair share of complaints from guests. Here are some of the common issues mentioned in online reviews:

Noise: Some guests have reported issues with noise pollution, whether from street noise, construction work, or even other guests in the hotel. This can be particularly disruptive in rooms facing the busy Michigan Avenue.

Service: While praised by many, some guests have expressed disappointment with the level of service they received, particularly regarding housekeeping, responsiveness to requests, and staff attentiveness.

Value for money: Given the hotel’s high price point, some guests have felt that their stay did not meet their expectations in terms of overall value. This could be due to factors like small room size, limited amenities, or unexpected additional charges.

Outdated rooms: While the hotel underwent a major renovation in 2013, some guests have mentioned that certain aspects of the rooms, such as bathrooms or furniture, appear outdated or in need of refurbishment.

Hidden fees: Some guests have been surprised by additional charges not clearly communicated beforehand, such as resort fees, parking fees, or minibar charges.

Food and beverage: While the hotel’s restaurants generally receive positive reviews, some guests have found the prices to be excessive or the menus to be limited.

It’s important to note that these are just some of the complaints that have been mentioned online, and they may not reflect the experience of all guests. It’s also worth mentioning that the hotel has actively addressed some of these issues, such as implementing noise-reduction measures and improving communication about additional charges.

Here are some additional things to consider:

    • Guest expectations: The Langham Chicago is a luxury hotel, and guests should expect a certain level of quality and service. However, it’s important to remember that no hotel is perfect, and there will always be some occasional issues.
    • Individual experiences: Everyone’s experience at a hotel will be different, and what one person considers a minor inconvenience, another may find to be a major dealbreaker.
    • Online reviews: While online reviews can help get a general sense of a hotel, it’s important to take them with a grain of salt. Some people are more likely to leave a review if they had a negative experience, and not all reviews are accurate or objective.

If you’re considering staying at The Langham Chicago, it’s always a good idea to do your research and read a variety of reviews before booking. You should also be aware of the hotel’s policies and amenities, and be prepared for the possibility of encountering some minor issues during your stay.

Here are some interesting trivia facts about The Langham Hotels group:

What is Micro Sleep and is it Good for You?

Microsleep
Microsleep   Have you ever woken up to your name being called, only to realize you had dozed off at the meeting?   If you answered yes, you may have experienced microsleep. It is a short burst of unintended sleep that often occurs without the person’s realization. Although microsleep can be experienced by anyone, it is more common among people who work odd hours, are sleep deprived, or have a sleep disorder like insomnia or sleep apnea. Such brief episodes of unexpected sleep are often the cause of road accidents and other mishaps. It is important to note that microsleep is not the same thing as a power nap.   What exactly is microsleep? Microsleep can be best described as a brief, unintended period of loss of attention, often associated with blank stares or eye closure when trying to stay awake during a monotonous task like listening to a lecture or watching TV. This happens the most when the person is tired and sleepy yet trying to perform normal activities. One of the most common consequences of insomnia, microsleep often turns to be dangerous and even fatal. The duration of a microsleep is anywhere between a fraction of a second to two minutes. Since microsleep often occurs with the eyes open, the person is not aware that it has happened. In a state of microsleep, even though the eyes are open, the person will fail to respond to information, like seeing a signal or hearing their name being called. Drowsy driving is often the result of microsleep, where the person is not even aware that he has dozed off.   When does microsleep happen? Scientists have found that microsleep is most likely to happen at the time of the day when the person is supposed to be sleeping. It could be late at night, early dawn, or mid afternoon hours. The frequency of microsleep increases as the person keeps being sleep deprived and accumulates sleep debt. The more sleep deprived the person is, the more the chances of microsleep happening. Sleep scientists also claim that everyone experiences microsleep when falling asleep. The first fifteen seconds of drifting off to sleep can be called a microsleep episode when the lights in the brain flickers for a while before turning out.   What causes microsleep? Even though microsleep episodes can happen to anyone, it is the most common among people who are sleep deprived. It can also occur to people engaged in a routine, monotonous task for a prolonged period. Research has found that during microsleep, parts of the brain fall asleep while other parts stay awake, explaining the selective loss of attention. People with sleep disorders like insomnia or sleep apnea are also at risk. In fact, in several instances, microsleep episodes are used to diagnose sleep disorders. Common sleep disorders that can cause microsleep episodes are:
  • Sleep apnea, where the individual does not get proper sleep at night because of irregular breathing. Even though people with sleep apnea may get enough hours of sleep, the quality of sleep is affected because of frequent waking up. People with this disorder are at a high risk of microsleep, and also happen to be involved in the highest number of drowsy driving cases.

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness, where the individual is sleep deprived because of insomnia and struggles to stay awake during the day. This is a well recognized symptom of insomnia.
Warning signs There are ways to recognize and prevent microsleep. You are prone to experience microsleep if you:
  • Feel excessively sleepy.
  • Have difficulty keeping your eyes open.
  • Find your eyelids drooping or closing, have a blank expression, or have to blink to keep your eyes open.
  • Have difficulty following directions.
  • Yawn a lot.
  • Have a foggy memory.
  • Feel irritable or moody.
  • Have difficulty driving on track and keep drifting to the side.
  • Experience head jerks that wake you up.
Consequences of microsleep can range from missing an important lecture or the exit while driving, to car and workplace accidents. It helps to recognize signs and prevent microsleep as best as possible.   The following are some of the ways to prevent microsleep:
  • Avoid driving or working with hazardous machinery when you are sleepy.
  • Before setting out for a long drive, make sure you get some sleep to avoid feeling drowsy on the road.
  • Travel with a companion or play upbeat music to remain alert on the road.
  • In a class or office, fidgeting quietly, engaging in productive conversation and taking breaks to walk around are some of the ways to drive away sleepiness.
  • Get sufficient sleep every night, and consult a doctor to rule out sleep disorders.
Microsleep may seem like an ordinary occurrence, but it can often have dangerous consequences. Getting proper sleep and getting diagnosed for sleep disorders are some of the ways to prevent episodes of microsleep on the road or at work.

Comfortable headband: With comfort, stretchability, and functionality, the headband of the mask takes the usefulness of the product a few notches higher. It keeps the mask in place without causing discomfort, and also acts as a pillow.

NAYA Mask is a crowdfunded project on Kickstarter that is due to launch on November 17. Designed to give users a new sleeping experience, the NAYA Mask aims to be a truly multipurpose and revolutionary wellness product.

Mattress Firm just recently launched a competitor to all the other online brands. Mattress firm is like the Starbucks of the coffee world. There is one on almost every corner and they are a dominant player in the mattress space. It’s only fitting that they would get into a growing segment of the mattress market.

Mattress firm can leverage their wide distribution network to get you your Tul mattress quickly. Apparently within 48 hours in most areas.

Here are some videos that give an overview of the mattress.

Below is a more in depth explanation of the mattresses.

Below is a press release from the latex bed in a box brand, Tulo…

One is Not a Choice: Introducing tulo, a Bed-in-a-Box Brand with Variety

tulo offers mattresses in three comfort levels, all at the same affordable pricing, with the option to purchase online or in-store

tulo™, a new bed-in-a-box-brand puts the customer first by offering choice, convenience, comfort and value, launched in New York today.  tulo offers consumers with choice, such as three different mattress comfort levels at the same great price, buying online or experiencing the product in-store, 120 nights to decide if your tulo is the right fit, and 48-hour delivery. The brand was created to fill the gap that exists in the category by putting everything consumers want in a bed, into a box. Each tulo incorporates an exclusive combination of materials designed to provide a durable, pressure relieving mattress that helps consumers sleep cool.

Based off years of research and development, tulo™ recognized that there is not a perfect bed for everyone.  Using sleep position as the baseline for development, tulo identified a growing need to provide consumers with more choices when it comes to their mattress in order to appeal to all kinds of sleepers:

  • tulo Soft: Made for  side sleepers and designed to relieve pressure on the shoulders and hips  to minimize tossing and turning
  • tulo Medium: Ideal for multiple sleep positions, but specifically stomach sleepers, offering a unique blend of Soft and Firm – providing that just-right feel
  • tulo Firm: Created for back sleepers and designed to provide head-to-toe and edge-to-edge firmness, allowing for total body support

“We fundamentally believe that one is not a choice, and that everyone should be able to choose the mattress that provides them with the best night’s sleep based upon their comfort needs,” said Sunni Goodman, SVP of Communications at Mattress Firm and tulo Brand Ambassador. “We understand a mattress is a personal investment and strive to accommodate consumers with choice, including the mattress’ comfort level, how they experience it, and, ultimately, how they purchase and receive it.”

Each tulo™ mattress features a unique blend of open cell technology and high resiliency material to contribute to a long lasting and fatigue-free comfort level. Additionally, unlike most bed-in-a-box mattresses who only offer one, two or three layer designs, all tulo mattresses feature a four-layer design. Combined, these four layers will increase airflow—as the top two layers form an exclusive airflow system— to control comfort, and keep consumers cool throughout their sleep cycle.

tulo mattress review

Consumers can simply order online and choose their delivery date and time; or, they can visit Mattress Firm stores nationwide to experience tulo’s™ three mattress options in-person. Each tulo mattress arrives at consumers’ doors in two days or less, with unboxing taking no more than a few minutes. Tanda Mattress Review: Must-Have Cool Comfort Awaits

Tanda Mattress Review

The Dromma Bed has been discontinued. Please check out our other mattress reviews.

[vc_column_text class=”sleep-sherpa-exclusive-deal”]I just received a free Tanda Mattress for review. The Tanda mattress comes in two constructions, the Comfy Cool mattress and the Complete Cool mattress. I received the Complete cool mattress which features something called, ATROS technology. This is a phase change material to the extreme. It provides a lasting cooling sensation to keep you comfortable throughout the night.  Both models of the Tanda are all memory foam mattresses.

Overview of the Tanda Mattress

You can order the Tanda directly through their website. As with most of the online mattress brands, this one will arrive about a week after placing your order and will arrive in a box at your door. No need to wait for scheduled delivery times either.

Prices for the Tanda are as follows:

Twin $550
Twin XL $600
Full $800
Queen $950
King $1,150
Cal King $1,150

Tanda Mattress Construction

The Tanda mattress is constructed as follows:

  • 10 inches high
  • Top layer is a Tencel fabric with ATROS technology
  • Top layer of comfort foam
  • Transition layer of gel memory foam
  • Base layer of support foam

Tanda Mattress Construction

My Tanda findings

The Tanda definitely lives up to its claims by sleeping cool. Even lying on the mattress with a light sweater, I could feel the cooling effect of the ATROS technology. Below is a video shot with my thermal camera to illustrate heat retention. Just note that the video below doesn’t tell the whole story. This mattress is actually cool to the touch so even though there is heat coming off the mattress you still get a cooling sensation.

This mattress sink a little bit but I wouldn’t call it a plush mattress. I would say it is more a true medium firm foam mattress. Here’s a picutre to show how much the mattress will sink.

Tanda mattress sink

Here’s a video demonstrating the amount of motion transfer you can expect with this mattress. Again, since it’s an all foam mattress you won’t have to deal with your partner waking you up at night from tossing and turning.

Finally, here’s a video showing how each layer reacts. You’ll noticed that it doesn’t bounce back immediately but also doesn’t take too long to recover. This again gives it a good balance of pressure relief and responsiveness.

My Tanda Mattress Recommendation

The Tanda mattress is an excellent choice for people looking for a mattress with denser foam than many of the more popular options that also can sleep cool. The ATROS technology is no joke. It really will help you sleep cool. To compliment their cool sleeping mattress, they also offer pillows with the same cooling technology. The Complete Cool pillow retails for $75 and is made with a shredded foam inside. Below is a picture of the inside of the pillow.

Tanda Pillow Inside

These pillows have gusseted edges which make them ideal for side sleeping.

Tanda PIllow

In conclusion, if you have tried and like the feel of memory foam but are having trouble with heat retention issues, I think the Tanda would be a great choice for people that sleep hot. You should get immediate relief with the cool to the touch cover that should have a lasting effect to keep you asleep.

Sleepy’s Launches New Roll Packed Mattress in a Box

Sleepy
One of the largest and oldest mattress companies in the US, Sleepy’s first came into existence in 1931. Led by Louis Acker and his son Harry, Sleepy’s first store was opened 86 years ago in New York City. The business was registered as a mattress company in 1957 under the name Bedding Discount Center. In 1975, the name was changed to Sleepy’s. Harry Acker’s son David took over as president of Sleepy’s in 2001. Sleepy’s was recognized as the ‘fastest growing furniture retailer’ by a trade publication in 2009, and was the 11th largest mattress company as of 2014. With over 1000 showrooms and a broad customer base across the country, Sleepy’s is one of the leading mattress companies in the US. In 2015, Sleepy’s was acquired by Mattress Firm, and all its products rebranded. Sleepy’s still functions as an online retailer, and their mattresses remain as popular now as they were eight decades ago. One of the most respected brands in mattresses, Sleepy’s have always ensured customer satisfaction with their unique, top-quality products.   Sleepy’s new mattresses To keep up with the bed in a box phenomenon, Sleepy’s has come up with three new mattresses. Memory foam mattresses are a rage now, and it was high time Sleepy’s jumped on the bandwagon too. Regardless of your size, weight, or preference, the new Sleepy’s mattresses have been designed to suit a variety of people with choices as unique as the brand itself. Let’s take a look at the mattresses.   Sleepy’s Essential 8” Memory Foam Mattress If you have always stayed away from 8” mattresses because they lack proper support and comfort, Sleepy’s is here to change your mind. Sleepy’s Essential 8” Memory Foam Mattress may be thinner compared to its 10” and 12” counterparts, but packs quite a punch. This no-frills basic mattress is made of two layers—the support layer and the comfort layer. The 4-inch foundation layer made of high density poly urethane is designed to provide better support to both back and side sleepers, no matter what their weight. The top layer constructed from 4-inch memory foam is velvety-plush and molds to your body to provide a restful, comfortable sleep. The mattress is rated by the company as medium on the firmness scale—i.e.: neither too soft nor too firm. The ventilated woven cover ensures breathability and helps you sleep cool without sweat or discomfort. The top layer provides some responsiveness and bounce, and prevents sinkage and motion transfer to a great extent. Suitable for adjustable base beds, Sleepy’s Essential 8” Memory Foam Mattress comes with a 60-day return and refund policy, so you can always swap your mattress for a different one if you are not happy with it. The mattress comes in five sizes, and retails from $320.   Sleepy’s Limited 10” Mattress For those who prefer 10-inch mattresses that are soft, comfortable, and yet firm enough to provide some support, Sleepy’s Limited 10” Mattress is the ideal choice. It figures between its 8” and 12” cousins, and provides ultimate softness and comfort with its three layers— two comfort layers and the core support layer. Like most Sleepy’s mattresses, the core layer is made of 5.5-inch high density poly urethane with memory foam construction to provide comfortable support. The two comfort layers are designed to lend a plush feel to the mattress. The 3-inch super soft polyurethane layer provides a luxurious comfort to the sleeper, while the 1.5-inch memory foam layer provides additional support. The mattress comes with fire retardant fabric covers for added protection. The mattress is rated as plush on the firmness scale, so it might not be suitable for those who prefer a firmer feel. Sleepers on the heavier side could experience some sinkage and motion transfer, but others should have no problems with this plush mattress. It offers exceptional breathability and cooling, and conforms to your body to provide the maximum comfort. The mattress is shipped in a pack and roll box, and is available in five sizes—from twin to cal king. If you are looking for a plush memory foam mattress on a budget, Sleepy’s Limited 10” Mattress is a great choice, since it retails from $299.   Sleepy’s Cool Plush 12” Memory Foam Mattress Looking for a mattress that keeps you cool without breaking the bank? Sleepy’s Cool Plush 12” Memory Foam Mattress should be your pick. While luxury cooling mattresses cost you an arm and leg, Sleepy’s provides the same quality and comfort at a fraction of the price. This 12-inch mattress offers unmatched support to all kinds of sleepers, thanks to its two-layer construction. The 3-inch memory foam layer provides exceptional support by molding to the sleeper’s body. The gel-infused cooling technology ensures maximum breathability for those who sleep hot, and eliminates sweat and discomfort. No matter what the sleeper’s weight or position of sleeping, this layer ensures a peaceful rest every night. Then there’s the 9-inch support layer made from high density poly urethane that makes the mattress sturdy and durable for years to come. This ventilated mattress is rated as plush on the firmness scale, but its thickness ensures superior support and comfort for all kinds of sleepers. Low motion transfer and sinkage, and some level of responsiveness and bounce aid in a luxurious sleep. Sleepy’s Cool Plush 12” Memory Foam Mattress is available in all sizes, ships worldwide for free, and retails from $820. The 60-day return and refund policy is applicable on all of the above mattresses, and items above $599 qualify for free national shipping.   Despite the rise of luxury mattresses, Sleepy’s ensures the same quality and features at a much affordable price. One of the oldest and most reputed mattress companies in the US, Sleepy’s mattresses come with a manufacturer warranty of up to 25 years. The company also has thirteen other mattress brands, some of the most popular ones being Beautyrest, Dream Bed, and Snuggle Home. For high-end mattresses at an affordable price, look no further than Sleepy’s that offers luxurious rest without breaking the bank.

Gravity Blanket: Risky Miracle or Must-Have Wellness Tool?

what is a gravity blanket

So, What Exactly is a Gravity Blanket and What Can it Do?

Understanding the Gravity Blanket Phenomenon

In recent years, the Gravity blanket has captured the attention of many, particularly those struggling with insomnia, anxiety, or related conditions. The idea is simple yet alluring: a blanket that promises to provide relief from your troubles. However, reality is often more complex than appealing advertisements suggest.

Initially pitched as a miracle solution for various medical conditions including PTSD and depression, Gravity garnered impressive funding—$3 million through online crowdfunding. This venture ignited hope, but an unexpected turn of events marked a significant shift in public perception, primarily following scrutiny from the FDA and Kickstarter.

The Reality Check

Despite its initial hype, the claims surrounding the Gravity blanket were not backed by robust long-term evidence. The blanket operates on the concept of deep touch pressure stimulation, which mimics the sensation of being hugged and may offer a placebo effect for conditions like anxiety and insomnia. Yet, solid scientific validation remains limited.

The company behind Gravity soon faced backlash for its marketing tactics. It was found to have violated Kickstarter’s policies and FDA guidelines, which prohibit products from being presented as cures. Rather than promoting a medical solution, Gravity had to transition its marketing, rebranding the blanket as a “wellness product.” Instead of claiming to cure ailments, they now suggest it may provide some benefits.

What is a Gravity Blanket?

Conducted under the umbrella of weighted blankets, the Gravity blanket operates on the principle of applying gentle, evenly distributed pressure across the body. This design aims to evoke calming sensations akin to being embraced. Typically, the weight of a gravity blanket is about 10 percent of the user’s total body weight. Custom-made options can be significantly pricier than standard blankets.

Gravity marketed itself as a “premium-grade, therapeutic weighted blanket,” promising relief for emotional and mental health issues. The success of its crowdfunding campaign, which attracted over 15,000 backers, underscored the demand for such products.

The Promises and Pitfalls

The blanket generated substantial interest by playing on the psychological desires of individuals suffering from various conditions. As with any wellness product, the allure of a simpler, cost-effective solution to anxiety and depression is tempting. Gravity’s marketing suggested that its product could replace traditional medical treatments, drawing in consumers seeking relief without hefty medical bills.

However, this approach began to unravel when regulatory bodies stepped in. The FDA emphasized that while wellness products can provide support, they cannot be sold as treatments. A warning issued by Kickstarter about misleading claims compelled Gravity to alter its messaging significantly.

The Science Behind Gravity

While some argue that deep touch pressure stimulation can assist individuals with specific disorders like autism and dementia, research on the effectiveness of weighted blankets for broader psychiatric conditions is scant. Several studies indicate that these blankets alone may not alleviate the symptoms of anxiety or insomnia. Instead, they could complement a healthy lifestyle, though concrete evidence remains elusive.

The complex nature of mental health disorders leads experts to believe that deeper underlying issues often exist. Consequently, addressing symptoms without tackling root causes rarely leads to lasting improvements. Critics question whether the Gravity blanket is even targeting the right audience for effective use.

Conclusion: Making an Informed Decision

While the Gravity blanket may provide a sense of coziness and comfort, it’s crucial to approach these wellness products with a discerning eye. You don’t have to splurge on a high-priced option to experience the benefits of weighted blankets; more affordable alternatives are widely available.

If you’re curious to explore the comfort of a gravity blanket for yourself, feel free to give it a try. However, approach it as one tool in your self-care arsenal rather than a panacea for serious health issues. At the end of the day, no blanket can substitute for professional medical advice or treatment. Always use your best judgment and consult with healthcare providers when considering options for managing mental health.

Agility Bed: The Must-Have Mattress for Ultimate Comfort

Agility Bed e1507202893752

I was given a free Agility Bed for review. The Agility Bed  is a softer mattress that features a five zone latex system on the top layer as well as bio based gel foam. In between these layers are nearly 1,000 micro coils to provide extra support and contouring. What you get is a soft mattress that still gives you good support.

Overview of the Agility Bed Mattress

You can order the Agility Bed direct from their website. After placing your order it should arrive in about a week. When you receive it, it will come in a box like the one below. Even though this mattress has coils, it can still be compressed. In fact, mattresses bigger than this can still be compressed in a box and in my opinion are every bit as good as their store counterparts.

With the Agility mattress you get a 100-night free trial where you can sleep on it for 100 days and if you’re not happy with it before the 100 days is up, you can return it for a full refund. It’s free shipping to you and no return shipping fees either so it’s a clean break.

Agility Bed Box

Below is a video highlighting some of the features of the mattress and my initial impression.

Construction of the Agility Bed

Agility Bed Inside

  • Latex top layer is a 3.3# density and ILD of 14.
  • Micro coils
  • Transition Layer of 4# density visco and 12 ILD.
  • Polyurethane core that is 1.8# density and 33 ILD.

Agility Bed Mattress Construction

Pricing is as follows:

Twin $799
Twin XL $799
Full $999
Queen $1,099
King $1,299
Cal King $1,299

My Agility Bed Findings

The Agility Bed is a soft mattress and you sink into it right away. As opposed to a dense foam mattress that takes a while for you to sink in, this mattress will instantly cradle you and spring back. What makes this possible is two things, the top layer of zones latex and the microcoils underneath. Check out the video below to see how each layer reacts.

The microcoils don’t look like they are doing much and individually they really don’t, but in aggreggate, they all work together to give you subtle support. They also add to the breathability of the mattress. Instead of using an extra layer of transition foam, the micro-coils act as a transition layer while the latex on the top layer serves as the comfort layer.

The foam underneath the microcoils is dense and will then allow the coils above to sink as necessary where they get the most pressure so that you don’t get too much pushback from the coils system.

Here’s a video showing motion transfer on the Agility Bed using my bowling balls. This was done at the center of the mattress. Keep in mind that since the top layer is a zoned latex system each part of the mattress will have a different firmness. I dropped the bowling ball at the middle of the mattress where your hips would be. Your midsection is the heaviest part of your body.

Usually a softer mattress means a less breathable mattress. That’s because as you sink into the mattress you have more material surrounding you. The Agility Bed addresses this problem first with the latex Layer. As you can see in the picture below there are holes in the latex. This is because the latex mold creates these holes and what you get is a very breathable top layer.

Underneath that are the microcoils which also create more airspace for heat to escape.

Agility Bed Latex

Here’s a video showing how well the Agility Bed can dissipate heat from the cover.

My Agility Bed Recommendation

The Agility Bed is an excellent choice for anyone, not just moms, looking for a soft mattress that is breathable and supportive. Given the construction of the mattress, it is fairly priced as well. This is one of the softest mattresses I have reviewed and it is hard to get soft, “right” but Agility Bed did it with flying colors.

I highly recommend this for side sleepers that crave a soft cozy mattress.

Are You Avoiding Being Diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

It’s estimated that 22 million Americans have OSA and 80% of them are undiagnosed. Why?

I believe that many of them know or strongly suspect they have OSA. Many of them have friends that have it or died from its complications. It’s generally known that Obstructive Sleep Apnea, untreated, reduces life expectancy. So what are the reasons people don’t get diagnosed and treated?

A lot of those people won’t subject themselves to the most common treatment, the dreaded CPAP machine with those god-awful masks.

It was like “a hurricane blowing up my nose.”

“Wearing the CPAP machine felt equivalent to sticking my head out of a car window going 30 miles an hour. And I just couldn’t keep my mouth shut for more than an hour to breathe through my nose.”

Stories like this are the norm:

“I have had two of these things and could never use them. The first one was prescribed about 13 or 14 years ago, when I was still married. I was able to wear it for a few weeks and I did get better sleep with it for a while, but then it became so irritating to me that I was tearing it off when asleep and then later it just kept me up all night if I tried to use it.

Later my doc ordered a different one, with a gel mask and some kind of humidifier attached to it. I think I used it once or twice and that was enough for me. I think there are pieces of it in one of my closets.”

Admittedly, CPAP treatment is far from ideal. CPAP compliance is often defined as using the therapy for an average of 4 hours a night for at least 70% of the nights, a level of usage that already seems like poor compliance. Even with that marginal requirement for compliance, 3 studies show that somewhere between 29% and 83% of patients are still not found to be compliant. For many undiagnosed people this certainly seems like a pretty good reason not to bother getting diagnosed.

Some of the big complaints relate to CPAP’s high pressure causing discomfort, wakefulness, claustrophobia, dry nose and dry mouth. Higher pressure is needed when one’s mouth is open because air escapes through the mouth lowering the air pressure that is needed to keep the throat open to prevent obstructed breathing. People have tried chin straps, but they cause problems with discomfort, temporo-mandibular joint and dental problems. If one’s mouth can be kept closed, the CPAP pressure setting can often be reduced, lessening many of the complications of CPAP.

This problem was actually solved many years ago, but nobody knows about it. It’s called the Chin-Up strip. Dale Miller is the inventor of the Chin-Up strip. He came to visit me to help him market his product. My name is Dan Cohen, MD and I’m the guy who launched the Breathe Right nasal strip. When Dale came to visit me I was too busy to help him, but I’m trying to help now.

Dale’s Chin-Up strip helps a lot of people that use CPAP. Why? It keeps the mouth closed so that the CPAP pressure can be lower and still be effective. The Chin-Up strip helps keep the mouth closed in a way that avoids the problems that chin straps cause. It is comfortable to wear and it does what’s needed – keeps the mouth closed so that CPAP pressures can be lower and still keep the airway open and unobstructed.

Having been so successful with Breathe Right, I know how important a simple, effective solution can be. If you have or are suffering with CPAP compliance, consider this simple easy solution. If your CPAP machine is in the closet, please consider dusting it off and trying it again.

If you think you may have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) please read the symptoms below and get diagnosed:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Loud snoring
  • Observed episodes of breathing cessation during sleep
  • Abrupt awakenings accompanied by gasping or choking
  • Awakening with a dry mouth or sore throat
  • Morning headache
  • Difficulty concentrating during the day
  • Experiencing mood changes, such as depression or irritability
  • High blood pressure

OSA is a lousy disease to live with. I can certainly understand not wanting to live forever with those symptoms, but Chin-Up strips may help you overcome many if not all of the complications, dramatically improving the quality of your life.

Good luck, breathe and sleep better and live happier.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea? And, How To Treat It.

Sleep Apnea

Many people around the world suffer from sleep-related disorders. One of the most common sleep disorders is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (or simply sleep apnea) that affects at least one in fifteen people. While hundreds of people suffer from this condition, less than twenty percent get a proper diagnosis or treatment. When sleep apnea remains undiagnosed, it keeps getting worse and can also turn fatal sometimes.

Sleep is the body’s way of healing and rejuvenating from the day’s physical and mental activities, and lack of sleep because of disorders can affect the quality of everyday life. People who suffer from sleep disorders often feel lethargic and disoriented throughout the day and have trouble focusing on work or other activities. When this continues for an extended period, the person may be affected by high-stress levels and daytime sleepiness. Sleep apnea is a major reason behind all these conditions.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

There are several types of sleep apnea, but Obstructive Sleep Apnea is the most common. In this condition, breathing stops and starts periodically when the person sleeps. This happens when the throat muscles relax and block the passage of airway, making it difficult to breathe. The most important symptom of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is snoring. More often than not, all snorers suffer from OSA but are rarely ever diagnosed.

Causes and Symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

The biggest cause of sleep apnea is the blockage of the airway by the relaxing throat muscles. When these muscles relax, the passage of air is narrowed, resulting in impaired breathing. When this lasts for more than ten seconds, the oxygen in the blood starts to lower, and carbon dioxide starts to increase. The brain has a way of correcting the breathing by waking the person up for a brief moment. The person usually doesn’t remember this episode.

When this cycle repeats itself for several times every hour throughout the night, it prevents the person from getting the desired amount of sleep and causes excessive daytime sleepiness. Lack of concentration, tiredness, and lower levels of energy are some of the repercussions of sleep apnea. The sufferer often doesn’t remember the impaired sleep nor realize the problem.

There are several symptoms that may hint at obstructive sleep apnea. Some of these are:

Loud snoring: Most often, snoring that is loud enough to wake others up is caused by some kind of sleep apnea. Loud snoring should always be diagnosed and treated by a doctor to get to the root of the problem.

Daytime sleepiness: While daytime sleepiness can be caused by a lot of other reasons, if it continues for an extended period it may be because of obstructive sleep apnea and lack of nighttime sleep.

Waking up abruptly with a dry throat is another sign of snoring caused by sleep apnea.

Nighttime sweating and lack of concentration during the day are also symptoms that may be associated with obstructive sleep apnea. Morning headaches may be present along with these symptoms.

Mood swings, depression, and irritability can result from lack of proper nighttime sleep caused by obstructive sleep apnea.

Who Is At Risk for Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea can affect anybody, but certain people are at a higher risk. They are:

Overweight or obese people: Most people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea are overweight or obese. When fat deposits around the airway, it blocks breathing and impairs sleep. This does not mean being thin reduces the risk. Anyone with any kind of weight may be affected by this condition.

People with a narrow airway: Whether you have a naturally narrow airway or have enlarged adenoids or tonsils, this could be a serious factor contributing to the problem. Surgery is usually required to correct this condition.

People with hypertension: High blood pressure causes a rise in diastolic and systolic pressure, contributing to sleep apnea, snoring, and impaired breathing.

Smokers: Those who smoke are at a higher risk of obstructive sleep apnea because smoking causes fluid retention in the air passage and causes impaired breathing.

Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Depending on the severity of the condition, treatments for obstructive sleep apnea include:

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP): This is known to be the most effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP requires wearing a pressurized mask over the mouth and nose while sleeping, to help keep the airway unblocked by forcing air through it. Although it takes a little effort to get used to the mask, it is a very useful treatment.

Oral Mouthpieces: There is dental equipment fitted to the mouth for correcting the tongue, jaw, and soft palate position for clearing the airway.

Surgery: The process of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is used to minimize the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. This surgery removes tissue out of the airway but has side effects like pain and bleeding.

Laser surgery: This is a simple process to shorten the soft palate with the aid of a laser beam.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a treatable condition if diagnosed properly. If you have any of the above symptoms, and suspect that you might be at risk, consult your doctor for proper treatment and diagnosis to get to the root of the problem.

Organic Cotton vs Regular Cotton : What’s the Difference?

organic cotton vs regular cotton

We might not realize it, but cotton is the most popular fabric all over the world, and accounts for more than half of all fiber needs across the globe. To keep up with this demand, cotton growers resort to artificial means and excessive use of pesticides to make cotton grow faster. The products manufactured with this type of cotton tend to be full of chemicals and can cause allergic reactions to the skin.

Non-organic products that are grown with the help of chemicals and metals harm the environment too. The pesticides affect the soil and the water, damaging the natural resources in the process and disturbing the ecological balance. Regular cotton mainly causes soil loss and leaves the field unsuitable for growing other crops. The environment is harmed beyond imagination to produce just a single T-shirt!

Several people have become more aware and conscious about these problems in recent times. There is more attention towards environmental problems, leading to the production and popularity of organic materials. Organic cotton has been around for a while now, and is used to make premium towels, bed linen, and clothing. Products made from organic cotton are usually considered high end, and are generally more expensive than regular cotton products. The demand for organic cotton products keeps growing as more people become aware of their benefits.

Difference between organic and regular cotton

There is a world of difference between regular and organic cotton. Anyone who has used organic cotton products will find it hard to return to regular cotton. The benefits of organic cotton don’t just stop at the quality of products. Read on to find out the large number of benefits of organic cotton.

Purity of the Cotton

The purity of cotton fibers is judged from the way the cotton is picked. Cotton is either handpicked or machine picked. Organic cotton is completely handpicked, preserving the purity of every fiber and ensuring that no fiber is damaged in the process. Regular cotton is more in demand and supply, and is usually machine-picked to cope with the rush. This doesn’t maintain the purity of the fibers, and also damages cotton fibers in the picking process, leading to loss and wastage. Organic cotton products are softer than regular cotton because of the longer fibers. Being handpicked ensures these fibers don’t get weakened or broken, resulting in softer and more durable products.

Cotton Farming

Regular cotton farming starts with GMO or genetically modified seeds. They are modified to build resistance to bugs, but when the bugs become stronger, more pesticides are required. Organic cotton is made from natural seeds, and there is no use of pesticides or other harmful chemicals. Bugs are controlled with insects that kill the pests. As a result, organic cotton products are safer for the skin.

Regular cotton is grown on the same soil over and over again, degrading the soil quality, removing nutrients, and leading to unhealthy crops. Since these crops require more water, they are irrigated heavily, resulting in water wastage. Organic cotton is rotated from one soil to another, and the nutrients retain water for long, requiring less irrigation. This leads to healthier crops.

Weeding

The weeding process of regular cotton farming also uses chemicals in the form of herbicides that kill weeds. The use of such harmful chemicals affects the quality of crops, suck out moisture and nutrients from the soil, and also harm the farmers. Out of the total amount of pesticides used in farming, more than 25 per cent is used for cotton. These include highly toxic insecticides and carcinogens. Constant use of such chemicals can lead to serious diseases in farmers, and affect the neighboring environment. In organic cotton manufacturing, weeding is done by hand, hoeing, and different cultivation processes.

Manufacturing

Processing of regular cotton uses a large amount of chemicals. The use of heavy metals, chlorine, and chemicals dyes are not unheard of in the manufacturing of regular cotton. Even after washing the finished products, the residue of these chemicals remains and can cause serious skin allergies. Several people suffer from skin problems like eczema because of regular cotton products. Organic cotton uses safer alternatives to chemical dyes and whiteners. Natural or water-based dyes, peroxide for whitening, and other safer products are used to manufacture the finished goods.

Organic cotton is softer, hypoallergenic, and last for a long time. But the most important benefit is protecting the ecosystem, reducing wastage of water, and ensuring a safer working environment for the farmers and manufacturers. Organic cotton is a sustainable and eco-friendly option to regular cotton. Try it today to feel the difference yourself.

Understanding Gravity Weighted Blankets

Anxiety is a common problem among people with high-tension lifestyles. For some people, it may be a normal part of everyday life, while for others it is a chronic problem that needs medical intervention. Research has found that with the increase in work demands and decrease in time for relaxation, anxiety is on the rise among millennials. While it may not always be a serious medical issue, it does tend to interfere with normal life.

There are several treatments for anxiety, including prescription drugs, aromatherapy, yoga, and other alternative medicines. But wouldn’t it be great if stress and anxiety could be relieved without ever having to resort to medical treatment?

There’s reason for stress and anxiety sufferers to rejoice. Relax and rejuvenate without any kind of medicines, simply by choosing a Gravity Weighted Blanket.

What is a Gravity Weighted Blanket?

Gravity Weighted Blankets are a specially designed blanket that is customized to weigh 10 percent of the user. This weight provides a gentle pressure, mimicking the sensations of being held or hugged, and is believed to offer relief from stress, anxiety, and sleep disorders.

The company states that the blanket can be used for sleeping and much more. Watching TV, reading, resting, or simply sitting around wrapped in a blanket will provide relief from stress and stimulate rest.

How Does It Work?

Gravity Weighted Blankets work on a system called Deep Touch Pressure Stimulation. Modern lives are busy and hectic, and the overload of sensory input in the brain often causes stress and anxiety. Gravity Weighted Blankets aim to offer a solution to this by providing gentle stimulation to the pressure points that help in relaxing the nervous system, reducing cortisol production, and increasing serotonin levels.

Gravity has been described as made from breathable materials to prevent overheating while you sleep. The inner shell is made from cotton and is stuffed with high-density plastic poly pellets. Even before Gravity came into being, the benefits of weighted blankets had been much talked about in medical science. There are many ways to relieve stress and anxiety, and stimulating the pressure points is one such way. It’s a lot similar to acupressure in the way it provides gentle pressure to soothe the nervous system and induce relaxation.

Weighted blankets have existed for some years now. Besides sleep, it also aids relieve symptoms of anxiety, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder, nervous system disorders, and autism. In fact, parents of children with autism have always loved the calming effects of weighted blankets. Anyone who has ever loved the way a hug makes them feel will love the feeling of a weighted blanket.

The brain has been found to calm under the weight of something heavy, and a weighted blanket makes use of this for soothing the nerves and promoting better sleep.

It Improves Focus

It Reduces Anxiety

Weighted blankets can effectively calm the sympathetic nervous system, reduce anxiety and nervous behaviors. Along with the calming of anxiety, weighted blankets have also been found to be useful in taming obsessive-compulsive disorders.

It Relieves Depression

Weighted blankets improve mood and focus, and help in providing relief to people with depression. Additionally, people with mania, paranoia, and trauma have also been found to improve when using a weighted blanket.

Gravity Knitted Blanket

Gravity Knitted Blanket

Both gravity blankets and knitted blankets offer cozy comfort, but there are some key differences and potential benefits to consider when choosing between them:

Gravity Blanket:

    • Weight and Fill: Filled with microbeads or glass sand to provide deep touch pressure (DTP), simulating a hug and promoting relaxation.
    • Material: Typically made of cotton or fleece blends.
    • Benefits: Studies suggest DTP can improve sleep quality, reduce anxiety, and alleviate symptoms of conditions like restless legs syndrome and insomnia.
    • Drawbacks: Can be hot and heavy, especially for side sleepers or those who tend to run warm. Some users find the feeling of microbeads less comfortable than knitted textures.

Knitted Blanket:

    • Weight: Can be weighted or non-weighted. Weighted knitted blankets typically use glass sand or polyester pellets for filling.
    • Material: Often made from soft natural fibers like wool, alpaca, or cotton.
    • Benefits: Breathable and temperature-regulating, making them suitable for all seasons. The knit texture can be very soft and soothing.
    • Drawbacks: Non-weighted versions lack the DTP benefits of traditional gravity blankets. Weighted knitted blankets may be more expensive than traditional gravity blankets.

Benefits of Chunky Knit Weighted Blankets:

    • Combines the benefits of both: Chunky knit weighted blankets combine the deep pressure stimulation of a gravity blanket with the breathability and comfort of a knitted blanket.
    • Improved airflow: The open-knit design allows for better circulation, preventing overheating that can happen with traditional gravity blankets.
    • Softer feel: The use of natural fibers like bamboo or wool can create a more luxurious and cozy feel compared to microbead-filled blankets.
  • Aesthetic appeal: Many chunky knit blankets have a stylish and trendy look, unlike traditional gravity blankets.

Gravity Blanket Complaints

Gravity blankets are highly popular, but they certainly aren’t perfect. Here are some common complaints users have shared:

Heat and Weight:

    • Too hot: Many users find traditional gravity blankets to be quite warm, especially for side sleepers or those who tend to run hot. The microbead filling can trap heat, making it uncomfortable in warmer weather.
    • Weight discomfort: While the weight is intended to be comforting, some users find it too heavy and constricting, leading to difficulty moving around or feeling trapped. This can be especially problematic for people with claustrophobia or anxiety.
    • Uneven weight distribution: Some blankets have been reported to have uneven weight distribution, causing pressure points or feeling less snug than expected.

Other complaints:

    • Price: Gravity blankets can be quite expensive compared to standard blankets, even budget-friendly alternatives.
    • Quality: Some users have reported issues with the quality of construction, such as broken seams, leaking beads, or fabric pilling.
    • Washing difficulties: While advertised as machine washable, the bulky size and weight can make cleaning challenging for some users.
    • Not for everyone: Not everyone enjoys the deep pressure sensation, and it may not be suitable for people with certain medical conditions.

It’s important to consider these potential drawbacks before purchasing a gravity blanket. Here are some tips:

    • Choose the right weight: Opt for a lighter weight if you tend to run hot or are new to weighted blankets.
    • Material matters: Consider breathable fabrics like cotton or bamboo if you’re concerned about overheating.
    • Check reviews: Read user reviews from various sources to get a sense of common complaints and brand quality.
    • Order from a reputable retailer: This ensures you have good customer service and return options if needed.
  • Consider alternatives: Chunky knit weighted blankets can offer similar benefits with better breathability and a softer feel.
