The best sleep mask is the one that blocks light without fighting your face, pillow or sleep position. Start with adjustable cups if eyelid pressure bothers you, a slim contoured mask if bulk is the problem, or a weighted wrap if you prefer gentle pressure.

That is Ben’s fit experience with the reviewed Manta, rather than a guarantee for every face. His wife’s reaction was equally useful: “It works, but it’s bulky for side sleeping.” Those two observations explain why the most complete light seal is not always the most comfortable pillow-side choice.

How to check a sleep mask’s fit
- Test the nose seal in a bright room. Look down and turn your head. Small gaps can appear when the mask moves.
- Lie on your usual pillow. Side sleepers should check whether the cups or strap press into the temple, rather than judging comfort only while sitting.
- Check eyelid contact. Contoured cups create space; flat and weighted designs rest closer to the eyes. Choose the sensation you prefer.
- Use the least strap tension that keeps the seal. Tightening a poorly matched shape can add pressure without closing the gap.
- Check hair and closures. The fastening location matters if it catches hair or sits under your head.
Washing and replacement
Follow the exact model’s label. Manta Original and PRO allow cold machine washing in a bag and air drying, but specialty Manta masks use different parts and care routines. TEMPUR’s mask should not be immersed or put through a washer or dryer. A removable or washable cover does not make electronics, foam or weighted inserts machine washable.
Let the mask dry fully before wearing it. Recheck the nose seal as straps stretch and cups soften; a mask that has lost its shape may let light through even when its fabric remains opaque.

Which design is best for side sleepers?
Start with less bulk beside the eyes and a strap that stays away from the pillow contact point. An adjustable cup can improve blackout but still press against a pillow; test the mask while lying down.
Is a weighted mask the same as a blackout mask?
Weight describes pressure, while blackout describes light blocking. A weighted wrap may block light, but its seal and movement differ from a structured mask with eye cups.
Can I open my eyes inside every contoured mask?
No. Cavity depth and placement vary. Check for eyelash contact and adjust the fit rather than assuming “contoured” guarantees space.
