About
Perpetual Shade is a boutique sleep mask company that makes one of a kind, handcrafted sleep masks, using the finest silk. You can find these sleep masks in a handful of specialty shops in the New York area, Los Angeles and Dallas. Otherwise, they are available through their website. The sleep masks ship in 1 business day.
Experience
I was sick all day yesterday with some sort of bug that left me fatigued and in bed most of the time. This was the perfect opportunity to test out the Perpetual Shade. In order to get the quality sleep you need to have proper “sleep hygiene” . This means ensuring that either your sleep room is dark or that you cover your eyes properly to block out ambient light.
The Perpetual shade did a perfect job of blocking out light and cradling my eyes without too much pressure. Perpetual Shades are big enough to allow for more than adequate coverage and also provide extra stability so it doesn’t move around as you sleep.
The Perpetual Shade is by far the softest sleep mask that I have used. The masks are lined with 100% charmeuse silk and filled with lambswool to create a soft and light texture.
Aesthetics
Aside from its high-quality construction and materials. The Perpetual Shade is a piece of art. They are all handcrafted in New York City. They are definitely a conversation piece both in and out of the bedroom. The website has many different styles to choose from. From traditional black to lace or fun patterns.
My initial reaction to the Perpetual Shade is that it has a sort of 50 Shades of Gray vibe to it. They make a great Valentine’s, Anniversary or birthday gift. It is certainly something that would spice things up in the bedroom.
Warranty
According to the website, if you aren’t completely satisfied with the Perpetual Shade, you have 14 days from your purchase to return it for a full refund, minus shipping & handling. Having this generous return policy in place makes it that much more enticing to buy as a gift.

The Newest Entrant – NAYA Mask
Most of us wouldn’t imagine that a sleep mask could have more benefits than just aiding in sleep. That’s what the NAYA Mask is out to accomplish. Besides doing what a sleep mask is supposed to do— i.e., help you have some relaxed shut-eye— the NAYA Mask also keeps away germs when you’re on a flight, relieves a sore throat, and also makes storing your earplugs easy.
Here’s a video overview of the Naya sleep mask:
This unique and patent pending product also features a pull-down mouth mask conveniently nestled inside the eye mask. The mouth mask can be used to cover the nose and mouth and shield against germs. NAYA Mask is the brainchild of Tikeshwar Naik, co-founder of NadiaLabs.
Some of the unique features of the NAYA Mask are:
Adjustable nose pieces: Unlike other sleep masks, NAYA Mask comes with adjustable nose pieces that conform to any face shape to give a personalized fit. The mask provides the eyes with ample room to be free and comfortable while offering a black-out sleep at the same time. The adjustable nose piece makes it possible to wear the mask over your eyeglasses too.
Pull-down mouth mask: What makes the NAYA Mask truly unique is the pull-down mouth mask that comes with it. When you are traveling, are sick, or just want to shield against germs or viruses, the mouth mask comes as a saving grace. It traps moisture, makes breathing easy, and its silver fabric has antimicrobial properties that fight germs.
Mesh pouch: Along with storing the mouth mask conveniently inside the eye mask, the lining of the mask acts as a mesh pouch where you can store things like a strip of essential oil. The mouth mask is detachable and can be washed separately.
Eye hug attachment: The mask comes with another unique feature, called the eye hug attachment. You can insert cooling gel pads or warming pads to relax and rest your tired eyes anytime you like. This feature is great for when you’re sleeping, meditating, or simply relaxing on the couch.
Earplugs storage: If you are in the habit of misplacing your phone or music player earplugs, then the NAYA Mask provides you with a convenient storage location for them. No more misplacing earplugs anymore. Store them inside your mask, and reach them whenever you need them.
Small back pillow: To make the mask even more comfortable, there is a small back pillow that can be attached to the headband. Whether you want to rest your head against the wall or lie down on a flat surface, this provides support for your head.
Comfortable headband: With comfort, stretchability, and functionality, the headband of the mask takes the usefulness of the product a few notches higher. It keeps the mask in place without causing discomfort, and also acts as a pillow.
NAYA Mask is a crowdfunded project on Kickstarter that is due to launch on November 17. Designed to give users a new sleeping experience, the NAYA Mask aims to be a truly multipurpose and revolutionary wellness product.

Two days ago I received the Hibermate sleep mask. A unique sleep mask with ear muffs, the first I have ever come across. A truly one of a kind product that blocks light and sound to give you quality sleep in a less than ideal sleep environment.
The Hibermate was invented in Australia but is now available on Amazon Prime so you can get free shipping and it will arrive at your doorstep in 2 days!
Material
The Hibermate sleep mask is made with medical grade silicone that is very soft and supple which makes it great for sleeping. The ear muffs can be removed if not needed. It is estimated that the ear muffs block out 15-20db of sound. I think it blocks out more but that’s a conservative estimate. It has an adjustable strap on the back so one size fits all.
Here’s a video of me unboxing and trying out the Hibermate
I just started using the Hibermate. I have 2 young children at home so taking naps is a challenge. Even with my bedroom door closed, my kids can be heard loud and clear.
I wish I had the Hibermate back when I traveled more often for work. I stayed at many hotels with thin walls. Even though I often had a sound machine, the white noise still wasn’t enough to block out all the annoying door slamming and other weird noises throughout the night.
Hibermate works great on road trips too. Especially with screaming children. Our road trips to Chicago will be much more pleasant and restful with the Hibermate.
Thankfully my wife doesn’t snore but if she did, this would be a godsend. I have shared a sleeping space with other snorers when staying at a hotel or camping and I will be bringing this along next time I am in that situation.
The Hibermate is a great sleep aid but also a good tool for meditation. I enjoy meditating but get distracted in our house because it is small and loud with young children. The Hibermate helps me block out the outside world.
The Hibermate is a wonderful product that addresses the two most critical factors for a quality night’s rest, darkness and quiet. Do yourself a favor and invest in a Hibermate. It’s a small amount for piece of mind knowing you will get a good night’s rest.
Get your Hibermate Now before your next trip!

The Smaharty Review

I recently received a few different sizes and colors of the Smaharty sleep mask. The Smaharty sleep mask is a seamless piece of fabric that fits all the way around your head to block out light for sleeping. What makes the Smaharty unique is that there’s no “right way” to use it. There’s no up or down back or front so it’s extremely easy to put on and easy to store. The Smaharty is made of a fabric designed to wick away moisture so that you don’t get sweaty or uncomfortable while wearing it. It has a very silky feel that is comfortable around the eyes.
Another unique selling point about the Smaharty is that it can also be used as a head band or to make a pony tail. My wife has long hair that can get in the way of a good nights rest and the Smaharty may be just what she needs. She also puts her hair in a pony tail first thing in the morning so if she already is wearing this to bed, she doesn’t have to fumble around for hair bands. Everybody is happy!
The Smaharty sleep mask is perfect for travel. It’s small enough to fit in your purse or even your front pocket if you are on the road or taking a plane trip. I plan to always keep one in my carry on bag so that I won’t forget it on my next trip along with another by my bedside. The Smaharty comes in small, medium and large sizes. The fabric expands enough so that a medium would fit most people comfortably.
I highly recommend adding a Smaharty to your sleep arsenal for both travel and home!
The Smaharty will be available for purchase on May 1, 2015. Retail price is $25 with free shipping in the USA and $5 international.
It’s all good in the Nite Hood

I recently had the opportunity to try out the Nite Hood an amazing new alternative to the traditional sleep mask with strap. The Nite Hood is a hood/cap that you wear at night to block out ambient light and to increase your level of coziness. When I first tried it on I was impressed with its ability to block out light and to a minimal degree sound. The fabric is made of organic bamboo and is super soft so it feel great when you wear it. It also does a good job of keeping your head warm when it gets cool at night.
I usually get up before my wife and need to turn on lights in our bedroom. The Nite Hood came in handy for this as my wife was able to put hers on and block out all the light to continue her slumbers. As I was thinking in my Nite Hood last night, it occurred to me that this would be a perfect accessory for a camping trip in Minnesota or Wisconsin, I’m from Minneapolis, where the sun comes up super early in the summer months. One thing I hate about camping is that you are almost forced to wake up early because of all the light beaming in through your tent. The Nite Hood would be a perfect solution to this with the added benefit of keeping you warm at night when the sun goes down.
Because bamboo is a breathable textile, more so than cotton or even silk, it won’t get uncomfortable after extended use and does a great job of regulating temperature. The Nite Hood costs $25 and shipping is only $5 anywhere in the world. I think that’s money well spent for all the extra sleep you can get out of it. The Nite Hood is a must have for any serious sleeper.
