Manta vs Nodpod: Two Very Different Sleep Masks, Compared
The Manta Sleep Mask and Nodpod solve the same basic problem in opposite ways. Manta uses adjustable eye cups to create deep blackout without touching your eyelids. Nodpod uses a strap-free, 9-ounce weighted design that rests across the eyes and temples. For most sleepers, we prefer Manta. For people who specifically want gentle weighted pressure—especially side sleepers who dislike head straps—Nodpod can be the better fit.

Who each mask fits best
Manta is the easier recommendation if your main complaint is light leaking around the nose, fabric touching your eyelids, or a mask that slips off overnight. The adjustable eye cups let you position the blackout seal around your own face instead of hoping a one-piece fabric mask happens to fit.
Nodpod is for a different sleeper. Its four weighted pods spread gentle pressure across the eye and temple area without a conventional elastic or hook-and-loop head strap. That makes it especially appealing to people who find straps annoying or who like the calming sensation of weighted products.
Best reasons to buy Manta
- Excellent blackout with individually adjustable eye cups
- No direct pressure on eyelids or lashes when fitted correctly
- More secure for restless sleepers
- Strong choice for travel, daytime sleep and bright hotel rooms
- Easy to fine-tune around the nose bridge
Where Manta is limited
- The original round eye cups can feel bulky against a pillow for some side sleepers
- More structure around the face than a simple fabric mask
- Not the right feel if you specifically want soothing pressure over the eyes
Best reasons to buy Nodpod
- Gentle weighted pressure without a traditional head strap
- Very side-sleeper-friendly concept
- Freezer-friendly for a cool bedtime feel
- Dual-sided fabric gives you two different surface feels
- Machine washable and simple to use
Where Nodpod is limited
- Does not create the same structured blackout seal as Manta
- The weighted sensation will not appeal to people who dislike pressure around their eyes
- Can shift more than a strapped mask if you move aggressively in your sleep
- Nodpod itself says the mask is designed to help you fall asleep rather than necessarily stay on all night

Current product details
The original Manta Sleep Mask currently sells for about $39 direct from Manta. Its defining features are adjustable eye cups, a soft breathable strap and a design intended to create full blackout without putting pressure on the eyelids or lashes.
The standard Nodpod currently sells for about $38 direct from Nodpod. It measures about 29 by 4 inches, weighs 9 ounces and uses four weighted sections filled with polyethylene beads. One side is cotton and the other is a soft-touch velvet fabric. Nodpod is freezer-friendly and can be machine washed in a garment bag.

How they feel in real life
The most important difference is what your eyelids feel. Manta creates open cavities around the eyes. If you hate fabric touching your lashes, that alone can make it worth the money. Once the cups are aligned, the mask feels more like a soft frame around the eye sockets than a piece of fabric lying on top of the eyes.
Nodpod intentionally gives you the opposite sensation. The weight is the product. The four pods settle over the eyes and temples and create a gentle downward pressure. Some sleepers find that immediately relaxing; others simply do not want anything weighted against the eye area. This is why the two masks are less interchangeable than their similar prices suggest.
Which is better for side sleepers?
Nodpod gets the comfort edge for many dedicated side sleepers because there is no conventional strap or buckle trapped between your head and the pillow. Nodpod specifically recommends positioning the last two pods over the eyes and resting your head over the hollow end when sleeping on your side.
The original Manta is still usable on your side, but the round eye cups create more bulk at the temples. If you like Manta’s blackout approach and sleep almost exclusively on your side, the Manta PRO is the model worth considering. It is more expensive, but its thinner C-shaped eye cups and more breathable build are designed specifically to improve side-sleep comfort.
Which blocks more light?
Manta wins. The adjustable eye cups can be moved independently until the seal around the nose and eye sockets is right for your face. Nodpod blocks substantial light when it is positioned correctly, but the weighted fabric does not form the same structured blackout seal. People who are especially sensitive to dawn light, electronics or a partner reading in bed are more likely to prefer Manta.
Which is better for travel?
We would take Manta on a plane or to a hotel first. The secure strap and dependable blackout matter more when you cannot control the lighting around you. Nodpod can still work well in an upright seat by threading one end through the slit, and the gentle pressure can be pleasant during a flight, but it is a little more specialized.

Manta vs Nodpod on temperature
Nodpod has the more interesting temperature story. The standard model has two fabric surfaces and can be placed in the freezer before use. Manta’s standard mask is breathable, but its padded eye cups create more structure around the face. Manta’s higher-end models add more specialized materials, but that also pushes the price up.

Common questions
Is Manta or Nodpod better for side sleepers? Nodpod is often more comfortable for dedicated side sleepers because it has no conventional strap and lies flatter against a pillow. Manta provides better blackout, while Manta PRO is the better Manta option for people who sleep primarily on their side.
Does Nodpod block 100% of light? Nodpod can block a lot of light when positioned well, but it does not use individually adjustable blackout cups. If eliminating light leakage around the nose is your top priority, Manta has the advantage.
Does Manta put pressure on your eyes? The original Manta is designed so its adjustable cups sit around the eyes rather than directly on the eyelids and lashes.
Can you sleep on your side with a Nodpod? Yes. Nodpod gives specific side-sleeping instructions: place the last two weighted pods over the eyes and rest your head over the hollow end.
Can you wash a Nodpod? Yes. Nodpod says the standard mask can be machine washed on a normal setting inside a garment bag. It is dryer-safe, although air drying is recommended for longevity.
Is Manta PRO worth the extra money? It makes the most sense for people who already like Manta’s blackout concept but want a thinner temple profile and better breathability for side sleeping. Back sleepers and occasional mask users can usually save money with the original Manta.
Yawnder verdict
Manta is the better all-around sleep mask; Nodpod is the better weighted sleep mask. If you need darkness and do not want anything touching your eyelids, start with Manta. If you dislike straps and specifically want gentle weighted pressure, Nodpod is the more distinctive and satisfying choice.
