Ferry Collection Construction

Eli & Elm sent me their entire Ferry Collection to review, and while I was expecting the pomp and splendor of the past two Eli & Elm sets (the Wharf and Whitney Collections), I was surprised to find that there was no fancy, colorful box with typography gracing the front. Instead, the sheets were tied up with ribbon and labels, and the duvet was done up in the same fashion below it.

Both parts of the Ferry Collection are woven together using a 300 thread count organic cotton Sateen weave. The tags break down the contents of each package—the sheets come with a fitted, a flat, and two pillow cases, while the duvet comes with a duvet cover and two pillow shams—and focused on the Fair Trade nature of the collection.

My Ferry Collection Findings

I ran the sheets through the washing machine on cold, and through the dryer on low heat. The seams remained strong after the wash, and the fitted sheet only shrunk by 0.15 inches, which is quite solid for a set of cotton sheets.

Just like Cloudten’s and Gryphon’s Sateen cotton sheets, Eli & Elm’s Ferry Collection has “TOP OR BOTTOM” tags sewn into the short sides, which—despite being written in a horrendous shade of orange—are an extremely helpful design feature that I love.

The fitted sheet is tight and grips my mattress well, and the flat sheet is the correct size for a queen-size bed—I have no struggle tucking in the sheets and making it in the morning.

The duvet has strong wooden buttons and ties to hold a duvet in, which work very well, but I find the buttons to be a bit small for comfortable fiddling—I much prefer the buttons on the MagicLinen duvet that are twice as large.

The sheets exhibit quite defined wrinkles when removed from the dryer, and they don’t disappear too much during use. After a week of sleeping on the Ferry Collection, the sheen from the Sateen weave disappears and they resemble something ordinary, but only in looks.

These are no basic cotton sheets and you can definitely feel that as soon as you slip between them. I curl up in bed every night, cozy and warm in the embrace of the Ferry Collection. No matter the temperature, I find the sheets never get too cold or too hot, which makes getting a good night’s sleep easy. Their temperature regulation is impressive considering their basic cotton construction—some cotton sheets get hot and sweaty, and others are cold and icy, but not these. Dress for the season and the sheets will take care of the rest.

My Ferry Collection Recommendation

The Ferry Collection can be yours for between $129 and $159, which is actually less expensive than their Whitney collection (bamboo) and the same price as the Gryphon Sateen sheets I reviewed last month. These prices seem to be industry standard for affordable high quality Sateen sheets, so there is a bit of competition. They offer a 45-day window for returns, which is quite a bit shorter than other trial periods I’ve seen—I don’t even know if you can consider it a “trial period.” One thing to note is that Eli & Elm does not list Queen or King sizes for their Ferry Collection duvet set on their website, however I did receive a queen-size cover.

My Polysleep Origin Recommendation

 
The Origin is a great choice for the budget shopper. Even though it is less expensive than the competition, you are still getting high-quality foam that has antimicrobial properties. It is also relatively breathable for a foam mattress as they incorporate open-cell foam that will help with airflow and is more responsive than traditional foam.
 
The purple cover is also machine washable so you could even sleep right on the mattress without sheets if need be, but I wouldn’t advise it as you will want to keep the mattress clean with sheets and a mattress protector.
 
If you are someone who tends to move every few years or maybe going away to college, this is a great choice. It will be easy to move from place to place and feels great without a high price tag.

The first thing this pillow taught me is to make you properly read directions. I found myself a little confused at first, not realizing that the pillow had an inner pouch that itself could be customized. Overall the pillow looks solid and I like how its quadrant-style structure seems to be more meticulously constructed than other pillows. Having to be honest though, I would describe this pillow as more supportive than as soft. It’s comfortable but it’s not soft or fluffy but it’ll keep your neck steady and essentially, that’s what it’s designed to do. I also feel that the biggest value that you’re getting is when it comes to the pillow’s environmental certification. Setup is very easy, it takes about 30-45 minutes. Just make sure you read the instructions carefully.
 
How does the bundle sofa feel? Well, since it is a modern design, it isn’t going to be a super cozy mattress but you can make up for that by adding some throw pillows. Since the color and look is neutral it was designed to fit well into any space. As a taller person, I couldn’t completely stretch out on it but I could still easily nap on it and wouldn’t mind binging some Netflix on it either.
 
I have done many moves during my life and one of the worst pieces of furniture to move is your couch. I find it more cumbersome than a mattress because at least with a mattress you can bend it around corners and it won’t damage the walls. This is where the Bundle sofa really shines. I can be disassembled quickly so that you can move it in pieces, all by yourself. That’s why I highly recommend it for people in apartments or any temporary housing. The average American moves 11 times over the course of their life which means that chances are this couch is going places beyond your current residence.

It seems like you can get everything from Amazon these days. Ben recently reviewed the Revel mattress ($239 – $375), which is also available on Amazon. The Revel has a similar construction for the top layers as the BedStory but uses a 7-inch foam bottom layer instead of springs. That allows the Revel’s price to be even lower than the BedStory. For a small increase in price at some sizes, the BedSory offers springs but not the “Made in America” label.

Full disclosure. This is my first mattress review. That said, this obviously is not my first mattress! For over a year I have been sleeping comfortably on a multi-layer foam mattress that Ben (the Yawnder) recommended. So this isn’t my first rodeo. This was my first experience unboxing a vacuum-packed mattress. Watch the video below for that experience and some additional overview.

Overall the mattress firmness of the BedStory is in the low to mid-range based on how it felt to me and my wife. The mattress felt much softer with a lot of pressure placed in one location in the middle of the bed, so heavier sleepers might experience this as a soft mattress.

How much does the BedStory 12-inch Mattress Cost?

The Amazon listing includes three different mattress constructions and four different sizes. I tested the queen size of the “12 inch” mattress. I have definitely paid a lot more for a mattress than the sub-$400 price tag of the queen that BedStory sent me.

The edge around the mattress includes two rings of stiffer and stronger springs. This is a feature common on high-end mattresses but maybe not on a mattress that starts at under $230. On top of the springs are a support layer and two layers of egg-crate style foam. Topping off the mattress is a 1-inch layer of cooling gel memory foam. The overall feel is of a standard pillow top spring mattress but with a mild memory effect in the top layers.

My BedStory Recommendation

Only time can tell if the BedStory 12-inch hybrid mattress holds up like a more expensive mattress that you can buy elsewhere. There is nothing I see in the construction or feel that indicates any lack of quality. The outgassing from the mattress is almost non-existent, which is another great bonus. The springs combined with the cooling foam and egg-crate foam indicates that this mattress will continue to be a cool breathable mattress all summer long. For me, it is a keeper. And the price is hard to beat!

The sheets themselves felt reminiscent of the Gryphon sheets I recently reviewed, though the Cloudten had a noticeable stiffness typical of high-quality cotton. The fabric’s seams were robust, and it exhibited excellent durability during tests—no signs of pulling or weakness.

Following care instructions, I washed the sheets in cold water and tumble-dried them on low heat.

After laundering, I measured my fitted sheet, which displayed only a 0.75-inch shrinkage—a noteworthy achievement given cotton’s tendency to contract. Cloudten ingeniously labels the “short top side” on the fitted sheet seam, eliminating the common frustration of mismatching orientation. This thoughtful detail is possibly one of the best innovations I’ve encountered in the bedding industry.

Admittedly, the sheets emerged from the wash a bit wrinkled, retaining noticeable creases even after several nights of use. However, the pillow shams presented a challenge with their horizontal openings, resulting in stretched shams and slightly squished cushions.

This mattress is similar to most online brands in that it has 3 layers of foam. The Top layer is 3 inches of cooling gel foam for a generous amount of pressure relief and contouring. Below that you get the 2 inches of Lifttex foam which I found to be similar to serene foam in that it is more responsive and recovers faster than the layer of foam above it. Finally, you get the 7 inches of base foam for proper support which is standard.

Here’s a picture I took of the inside which is true to the description. I appreciated the fact that they didn’t add too much glue to the layers. Doing so sometimes prevents the edges from fully expanding.

My Revel Hybrid Mattress Findings

Overall this mattress in an incredible value. First off, the fact that it is made in the USA is a big plus. I was impressed that there was little off-gassing and it came to life right away. Sometimes mattresses from overseas will sit on a shipping container for multiple weeks and this can affect how quickly your mattress comes to life. That certainly wasn’t the case with Revel.

This mattress also finds a good balance between softness and support. I found contouring to be good but as a side sleeper that prefers a soft mattress, you may want to go even softer. That said, it will work for all sleep types.

The knit cover is stretchy to allow the layers beneath to do their magic and because it is 12 inches thick you sheets will fit well. Sometimes 10 inch mattresses aren’t thick enough and your sheets won’t be tight on the mattress.

Having tried hundreds of mattresses with similar construction, I found the transitioning between the layers to be more noticeable than some of the more expensive brands, by that I mean I could feel where one layer ended and the other began. It’s certainly not a deal breaker, especially given the price.

My Revel Hybrid Recommendation

Overall Revel is a solid choice for people looking for a quality budget mattress that is made in the USA. One drawback is that if you buy through Amazon you get their standard 30 return window but would need to pay for return shipping which will be expensive so you should at least know that you enjoy sleeping on a foam mattress before committing to purchasing.

It’s rare that I find a mattress of this quality made in the USA. I think most people will find this to be a good firmness for their needs but if you want to make it softer, adding a topper is an easy low-cost solution.

What I first noticed about the Buffy Breeze was how light and soft it felt. It gives you a nice cozy feeling without weighing you down. I found that it’s perfect for summer nights when the AC is on and a top sheet just won’t cut it. The stitching throughout the comforter ensures that the material stays in place so you get even heat retention.

I recommend using a duvet cover with the Buffy and they included loops in each corner so that you can tie your duvet directly to the comforter. This is my favorite method of securing a duvet since clips can often come loose.

My Buffy Breeze Recommendation

If you are looking for a sustainable, down alternative comforter that feels great and is good for the planet, the Buffy Breeze is an excellent choice. As someone who tends to sleep warm anyway, I could see myself using this year round. Since you have the 7-night trial option, you also get peace of mind knowing you can return it if it’s not right for you.

Gryphon sent me their Luxury Suite sateen cotton sheets in Charcoal Gray. I received the sheets in a brown shipping box with “DO NOT OPEN WITH SHARP INSTRUMENT” printed across the top flap, so I just tore it open. The sheets came tucked away in a sateen cotton bag, secured in a sealed plastic sleeve.

Many of the sheets I have reviewed have come folded in small cloth pouches, but I really appreciate the companies that use bags instead because they can be reused easily—there’s even a tag that says “Please, re-use me!”

The package—and sheet set itself—felt much lighter than other sheet sets I have reviewed. Initially I was worried that this set was missing a piece or two (possibly from a packing slip-up), but as it turned out everything was present. After unboxing, unbagging, and unfolding, I had a good look at the set before washing. The sheets are extremely light, which explains why the box’s weight was so negligible, but that is what is most interesting about these sheets—they are far more lightweight than any other sateen sheet.

The sheets are an exquisite shade of gray that has a deeper and heartier color than the gray on Eli & Elm’s Wharf Collection. While I wasn’t a fan of the pattern/colors of the Wharf Collection, this solid gray has truly caught my fancy. The sheets are made of strong, Oeko-Tex Certified, 100% Supima Cotton, and the seams and weave feel sturdy with little to no stretch at all.

My Gryphon Sateen Findings

I sent the sheets through the washer on cold and the dryer on low, and the fitted sheet pockets only shrunk by 0.75 inches—the smallest shrinkage I’ve reviewed on a cotton sheet set.

The Gryphon fitted sheet grips my mattress perfectly, and the pieces have retained a wrinkle-free texture despite sleeping on them for a week. These details may sound inconsequential, but they are nonetheless important things to note—personally I do not like my bed to be covered in myriad wrinkles.

Gryphon’s sateen sheets are possibly the greatest set of sheets that I have ever slept on, and that is not an exaggeration. Immediately after hopping into bed I knew that they were perfect. Light, airy, and breathable, yet soft and sleek—I had to double check the tag to make sure I wasn’t confusing the set with a bamboo sheet of some sort. In my experience, all cotton sheets, no matter how soft, have a kind of stiffness not found in bamboo or lycell.
