The Sparrow makes the most sense for shoppers who value longevity, replaceable comfort and multiple feel choices. Its 9.2/10 expected-durability score is the standout result in our current test record, and the replaceable comfort layer gives owners a practical way to change the feel later without replacing the entire mattress. In this 2016 video, Ben unboxes an earlier Alexander Signature Hybrid. Nest identifies the Sparrow as the successor to that mattress line; the older model in the video is not the 2026 Sparrow tested above, and construction and policies may have changed.
What is inside the Sparrow?
The Sparrow is a 14-inch hybrid according to Nest Bedding's product specifications. Its pillow top and foam comfort layers sit above individually wrapped coils. The zippered cover gives access to the replaceable comfort layer, which is the feature that sets this bed apart from many conventional hybrids.
- Quilted top: Nest lists a 1-inch quilted THERMIC phase-change cover and gel memory foam. Expect an upholstered initial surface rather than the bare feel of a thin fabric cover.
- Replaceable comfort layer: Three inches of Energex foam come in Plush, Medium or Firm. This is the layer a qualifying owner can exchange; it is not the entire mattress or coil unit.
- Transition and support: A 1-inch SmartFlow foam layer sits above an 8-inch pocketed-coil system with reinforced edge coils, followed by a 1-inch base foam layer. The brand lists 775 coils in a queen and 961 in a king.
Nest identifies the foams as CertiPUR-US certified and says the mattress is assembled in the United States using domestic and imported materials. A foam certification applies to the certified foam, not automatically to every component or to the mattress as an organic product.
Firmness: which Sparrow should you choose?
Our 6.5/10 firmness result describes the configuration in Yawnder's August 2026 test; the source record does not establish which retail firmness label was tested. Do not assume that score applies to every version. Nest offers Plush, Medium and Firm, and your weight and preferred position affect how deeply you engage the comfort layers.
- Plush: A starting point for side sleepers who want more give at the shoulder and hip, especially lighter people. Check that the waist and hips still feel supported.
- Medium: A compromise to try when you change positions or share a bed. It balances surface cushioning with support, but is not guaranteed to suit both partners.
- Firm: Worth trying for back or stomach sleepers who prefer a flatter, more supportive surface. The quilted top still adds cushioning, so it is not the same as sleeping on a hard floor.
For king and California king, Nest offers an internal split: two different firmness layers inside one mattress. That lets partners choose different comfort levels without buying two separate mattresses; it is different from a split king made of two Twin XL mattresses for independently moving adjustable-base sides. Ask the seller which configuration is on the order.
How the test results translate to everyday use
Pressure relief and alignment: The tested setup earned 7.3/10 for pressure relief and 8.7/10 for spine alignment. For a side sleeper, spend at least several minutes in your usual position and check whether the shoulder feels compressed. A softer layer may help, but it will change the feel and has not been separately scored here. Back and stomach sleepers should check that the hips do not sink noticeably below the rest of the body.
Motion and moving around: The tested configuration scored 8.7/10 for motion transfer and 8/10 for responsiveness. Couples who wake easily can test a partner getting in and out; people who change positions should also try rolling over. The scores are relative test results, not a promise that movement will be imperceptible.
Cooling and edges: Cooling scored 8.5/10 and edge support 8.3/10. The coil core and phase-change cover are designed to help manage heat, but bedding, room temperature and the sleeper affect the result. Sit on the edge to put on shoes and lie near the perimeter to see whether it feels secure enough for your routine.
Expected durability: The 9.2/10 score is an assessment of expected durability, not a measurement of how this particular mattress performed after years of use. Being able to replace the comfort layer is useful, but the coil unit, quilted top and other materials still age and the exchange does not guarantee a particular service life.
Trial, return and Lifetime Renewal Exchange
For an eligible direct purchase, Nest advertises a 365-night trial from delivery with a 30-night adjustment period before requesting a comfort exchange or return. The mattress must meet condition and support requirements, including being free of stains and retaining its law labels. Nest's terms describe donation, disposal or pickup arrangements and say some services or circumstances may involve fees. Confirm the exact process and any local charges before ordering; don't assume a mattress can simply be mailed back.
The Lifetime Renewal Exchange is a separate one-time comfort-layer benefit on qualifying purchases when included with the order. It can be used during the trial or later, subject to Nest's terms. A whole-mattress exchange during the trial counts as using the benefit; it does not reset the trial. Nest says each half of an internal split accounts for half the benefit and can be redeemed separately. Confirm eligibility and the LRE line item at checkout, and save the order documentation.
The limited lifetime warranty covers qualifying manufacturing defects under the manufacturer's conditions; comfort preference, ordinary softening and damage from improper support are different matters. The trial, exchange and warranty terms above describe Nest's direct program, not necessarily the terms of another retailer. Read Nest's current terms and the actual seller's policy before purchase.
Price, foundation and delivery checklist
Prices change with size, firmness, bundles and promotions. The previously published $1,299 queen reference has no verified current date, so it should not be treated as today's price. Compare the same size and the final delivered price, and confirm whether the comfort-layer exchange is included. A lower initial price is less useful if delivery, removal or a desired split configuration costs extra.
Measure the route into the room as well as the bedroom: Nest lists the queen at approximately 115 pounds and the king at 141 pounds, with a 14-inch profile. Check sheet-pocket depth and your finished bed height with the foundation. Nest says the mattress ships compressed and normally reaches its intended height in 12–24 hours; plan on help moving it and follow the instructions supplied with your order.
Use a rigid, flat, compatible foundation. Nest's terms exclude flexible or bowed slats, traditional box springs that do not provide rigid flat support, and slats spaced more than four inches apart. A properly rated adjustable base can be appropriate; confirm the specific base with the seller. Photograph the setup and retain receipts in case a return or warranty claim requires documentation.
