The first inches under the sheet control most of a mattress’s immediate feel. Quilting attaches fiber or foam to the cover; comfort layers sit below it and provide contouring. Their thickness and resilience can matter more than a dramatic top label.

Quilting is part of the construction
Stitch pattern, fiber and foam thickness change the hand feel and how fill migrates. A tight, shallow quilt feels firmer and more stable; a deep quilt can create plushness before the primary comfort layer engages.
Pillow top and Euro top are shapes
These labels describe how the upper panel is attached. They do not disclose the materials inside. Ask for the same specifications you would request in a tight top.
Comfort-layer thickness changes behavior
A thick soft layer allows deeper sink and delays contact with the firmer transition below. That may help pressure relief but can challenge alignment or increase visible impressions for some bodies. Thickness must be read with firmness and resilience.
Common comfort materials
Memory foam contours slowly, latex rebounds quickly, conventional polyfoam spans a wide feel range, fibers create breathable surface plushness, and microcoils add point response. Blends are common because no single material optimizes every trait.

Is a pillow top less durable?
Not automatically, but thick low-density padding has more opportunity to compress. Material disclosure matters more than the stitched shape.
Can quilting change firmness?
Yes, especially initial firmness. Deep plush quilting can mask a firmer core; a taut cover can make the surface feel firmer.
How thick should comfort layers be?
There is no universal target. Sleep position, body weight and the firmness of layers below determine how much depth is useful.
Are microcoils support coils?
Usually not. Short microcoils commonly act as a comfort or transition layer and should be reported separately from the main support unit.

Why the transition layer gets ignored
Marketing usually names the top layer and the coil unit. The transition layer between them decides whether a heavier sleeper feels a smooth deepening resistance or a sudden hard stop against the core. When a brand omits it, treat that as an unknown rather than assuming it is absent.
Total height is not a layer plan
Two 13-inch mattresses can allocate their height completely differently: 5 inches of soft comfort foam over a short core, or 2 inches of comfort over a tall coil unit. Add the published thicknesses and see where the height actually went before comparing prices.
