Split king vs split top king vs internal split

Split king is two full Twin XL mattresses, so both sides recline independently. Split top king is one mattress that is only divided in the top third, which keeps a single sleeping surface but limits how much each side moves. Internal split king is one cover holding two different feels inside — no gap, no independent reclining, but you each get your own firmness. Is a split king the same size as a king?

Yes, in total: two Twin XLs are 76 by 80 inches, identical to a standard king. Only California king differs — a split Cal king is two 36 by 84 inch halves.

Do I need a special base?

Not necessarily. A split king works on any king frame or foundation, but the reason most people buy one is a split adjustable base with two motors and two remotes. On a single non-adjustable king foundation you get the independent firmness benefit without the independent reclining.

What about the gap in the middle?
