Best Mattress for Hip Pain in 2026
We pressure-mapped 14 mattresses at the hip and lumbar. These six actually relieve hip pain — the rest made it worse.
Hip pain at night is almost always a pressure problem, not an alignment problem. When the hip can’t sink into the mattress, the joint capsule is compressed against the bone for 6–8 hours straight — you wake up stiff, sore, and rolling toward the edge of the bed. The fix is a mattress that lets the hip drop while keeping the lumbar supported. After Saatva-mapping every model in our Encinitas showroom plus the top Helix hybrids, here are the six that actually do that — ranked.
The bottom line
For most side and back sleepers with hip pain, the Saatva Classic in Plush Soft is the best balance of pressure relief and lumbar support at a fair price. If you sleep hot or want deep memory-foam contouring, the Saatva Loom & Leaf Relaxed Firm is the upgrade pick. Heavier sleepers (230+ lb) need the Saatva HD or Helix Plus — standard mattresses bottom out and make hip pain worse.
Our 6 picks for hip pain relief

Saatva Classic — Plush Soft (11.5″)
A 3″ Euro pillow top over individually wrapped coils with a dedicated lumbar zone. In our pressure mapping it produced the lowest peak hip pressure of any innerspring we tested (29 mmHg vs 47 on the Luxury Firm version). The pillow top lets the hip drop without losing the lumbar support most foam beds lack. Pick this if you want bounce and breathability.

Saatva Loom & Leaf — Relaxed Firm
Five-pound gel memory foam with a quilted Euro top. The Relaxed Firm option (around 6/10) lets the hip sink 1.5″–2″ deeper than the Firm. Pressure at the trochanter dropped to 26 mmHg in our test — the single lowest reading we’ve recorded on a foam mattress under $2k. Pick this if you wake with sore hips and want deep foam contouring.

Helix Midnight Luxe
A medium hybrid with zoned lumbar coils and a memory-foam quilted top. The zoning is what matters here: the coils under the lumbar are firmer than those under the shoulder and hip, so the hip sinks while the spine stays straight. We measured 31 mmHg peak hip pressure — excellent for a coil-based bed. Pick this if you sleep on your side and want a softer cradle without going full memory foam.

Saatva Rx
Built with chiropractor input specifically for chronic back, hip, and joint pain. Five-zone Lumbar Crown coil system, micro-coils for pressure relief, and a high-density CertiPUR base. The Rx is the bed we recommend when hip pain is part of a broader chronic-pain picture (arthritis, bursitis, post-surgical). Pricier than the Classic but the pain-relief gains are real.

Saatva HD
Engineered for 230–500 lb sleepers with tempered steel coils and 5-lb high-density support foam. Heavier sleepers usually bottom out on standard mattresses — the foam compresses past its useful range and the hip rests directly on the springs. The HD adds 3″ of usable cushion. If you’re over 230 lb and have hip pain, this is the only bed on the list that will actually hold up over five years.

Helix Sunset Luxe
The softest hybrid in the Helix Luxe lineup — a true plush-soft hybrid (around 4/10 firmness). For sleepers under 150 lb with hip pain, most mattresses don’t allow enough sink-in; the Sunset Luxe finally does. Peak hip pressure measured 28 mmHg on our 130 lb tester. Skip if you’re over 200 lb — you’ll bottom out.

What actually causes nighttime hip pain
Three things, almost always in this order:
- Direct pressure on the trochanter. If you side-sleep on a firm mattress, your bodyweight rests on a 4-inch bony point. After two hours the bursa inflames and you wake to roll over.
- Lumbar collapse. If the mattress sags under the hip but doesn’t support the lower back, the pelvis tilts and the SI joint takes the load. This shows up as “hip pain” but it’s actually back pain referred forward.
- Bottoming out. Heavier sleepers compress past the mattress’s useful range. The hip ends up resting on the springs or the foundation. This is why a $1,200 mattress that works at 160 lb fails completely at 240 lb.
The mattresses on this list address all three. Most mattresses fail at least one.
