My Rumpl Blanket Findings

The first thing to know about this blanket is that it is made from the same durable material you will find in many camping products. It is made with 100% recyclable 30D ripstop polyester fabric that is stain-resistant and light. Think of a quality sleeping bag in blanket format. Rumpl was the first company I came across to make blankets like this and since then, they have had a cult following. Nowadays they do have generic knockoffs but what they lack is style and other key features. Their partnership with the NFL as well as trending designers have made them a nice piece of art or statement piece.

The Rumpl isn’t my go-to blanket for everything. Often, you will want a softer fabric for movie nights. But if the movie happens to be outdoors or at the campsite, nothing beats a Rumpl. I like that you don’t have to worry about it ripping or staining easily and laying it out on the ground or near the fire is perfectly fine. While not waterproof, they are highly water-resistant and machine washable so they are easy maintenance.

My Rumpl Recommendation

If you like spending time outdoors, the Rumpl is a great choice. It’s one of those blankets you need for each of your cars so that when you have it in an emergency or a spontaneous outing or hike. Yes, it is a lot more than a cheap fleece blanket but after using this for a while, I would never go back to anything else for my outdoor events.

My Floyd Mattress Findings

This mattress has a true medium-firm feel. You don’t sink in a whole bunch with this mattress as you can see below when I put my 14 lb. bowling ball on it. Since you don’t sink much and because they are using a copper and graphite layer of foam at the top, it also sleeps cool.

Here’s another shot of me pushing into the mattress to illustrate sinkage.

Here you can see how well the top layer of foam conforms. Below this layer is a transition layer that serves as a buffer layer for the coil system. You really don’t need more foam than this unless you prefer a really plush feel or need more layers to accommodate heavier sleepers.

I’m laying down on my side in the picture below and this mattress does a good job with pressure relief. However, it doesn’t sink quite a much as other hybrids like the soft version of the Winkbed or the Allswell Luxe but if you have the right pillow it will still work great for side sleeping.

This mattress has good edge support because of the coil system. This is important if you are using the Floyd Bed frame because the profile of the frame is longer than the mattress.

My Floyd Mattress Recommendation

Floyd has done a really good job with their mattress considering they don’t claim to be a mattress company first. I could tell that they put a lot of thought into the design and feel. I think it was a really smart choice to go with a hybrid construction over foam as it will have more appeal, offer better support and sleep cool. If you are looking to update your bedroom, I would take a look at their bundles where you can get a considerable discount when purchasing together. My Essentia Tatami Findings

Unboxing the mattress was a little difficult. The mattress is not folded so it comes in a longer box. Instead of being able to simply pull it out of the box, I had to tear the box open from the side. It was a small inconvenience but did take extra time and effort. Once you get it out of the box and on your bed, you will notice that the mattress has an easily accessible cover that can be washed but I would recommend using a mattress protector.

As you can see the natural memory foam layer is softer than traditional latex even though it is an all-natural material. This is what really sets the mattress apart from the competition.

The Tatami has adequate edge support because of the coil system underneath. This is a zoned coil system that has perimeter edge support.

Here’s a shot with my 14 lb. bowling ball to further illustrate sinkage. There is just a little extra fabric in the cover to allow the material to fully conform to your body.

Here you can see how it conforms for side sleepers. This mattress feels very similar to a foam and spring hybrid without all the chemicals. If I didn’t know this was latex I would have it pegged as foam.

Here you can see how the natural foam will leave an impression. I put my hand directly on the natural foam layer for about 5 seconds.

As you can see it leaves a distinct impression that recovers after about 4-5 seconds.

My Essentia Tatami Recommendation

Essentia is the only company that I know of that makes a natural memory foam. This is no gimmick. Out of the hundreds of mattresses I have reviewed, none have been able to achieve this feel with all-natural materials. I highly recommend this mattress for side sleepers that want great contouring and excellent pressure relief without the drawbacks of foam which are primarily off-gassing and the environmental impact.

Silk and Snow is very intentional about where they source their material and manufacture their mattresses. The hybrid model is made with foam, coils and fabric from Canada and is made in Canada. This mattress is great for sleepers that prefer a slighty firmer, more supportive feel that will sleep cool all night long. Given the construction and specs, this mattress is an incredible value.

The mattress comes roll packed but not folded. This means that the box will be the full width of the mattress. In my case, I was given a king size to review which made the box longer than most. Given the weight and size of the box, I advise 2 people to move it into your bedroom. In my case, I removed it from the box before I brought it in the house since the box was dirty and the mattress itself is still roll packed in plastic and won’t come loose until you cut the plastic open.

My Silk and Snow Hybrid Findings

This mattress has extra features that you don’t often see at this price point. For example, you get 1,200 pocket coils in the king size and zoned support. This really makes a difference. You get better contouring and less motion transfer. This mattress is also made with a rigid foam perimeter for better edge support so you can maximize the use of the mattress.

The cover has a soft, silky feel with a silver infused cover that keeps the mattress fresh. Despite this, I still recommend using a mattress protector.

This mattress does provide contouring but I slept more, “on” the mattress than, “in” it. Because there is less of my body surrounded by the mattress, it just naturally sleeps cooler.

My Silk and Snow Hybrid Recommendation

I highly recommend this mattress for people looking for a firmer mattress that sleeps cool, provides great support, especially for your hips, and does not sleep hot. After discounts, you can get this mattress for $700 in a queen size which places it in my budget mattress category but not really because the specs on the mattress are right up there with some of the other top brands. In old and poorly designed comforters, whether they contain down or another material, you’ve most likely experienced what it’s like when you shake out a comforter, either to freshen it or when you’re making the bed. My Pacific Coast Hotel Down Comforter Recommendation

Having reviewed another down comforter by Pacific Coast in the past, I already knew what to expect in terms of quality because they make high quality products. The first comforter that I tried however, was so comforting that it enveloped you. It was honestly overwhelming. Sleeping through the night, I found that it was too much. It kept me warm but warmer than I needed, to the point where it wasn’t effective anymore. Had I lived in Ottawa (Canada) that comforter would have been perfect but I don’t. Living in New York, however, the Hotel Down Comforter is just right. It’s true that there’s a bit of change in terms of the material. It’s not as light as the first comforter I have tried but the material used for this one isn’t bad, it’s just different.

When I first opened the comforter, I could already tell there was a lot less down than I expected (keep in mind, the first comforter that I tried from this brand was HUGE!) but this was GOOD because down keeps you warm and you don’t need a tremendous amount of it. That’s the key thing. Remember that: you don’t need a lot. Goose down is like salt, you only need a little to make a huge difference.

The first time I laid down with this comforter over me, I was so pleasantly surprised. The comforter didn’t consume me! It was actually quite nice. The company choose the perfect density of goose down. I have to say that I was quite impressed. It kept me warm and comfortable. I didn’t feel like it was too much in the slightest and I do believe that it would be great for spring, fall and winter. Summer here is obviously hot so we need not worry about that but overall, I’m really impressed.

If there was one thing that I would change is, I would have loved to see this comforter available in an alternate stitch pattern. This one is known for its box stitch pattern but I’m really fond of the stitch pattern that includes a border along the perimeter of the comforter. I feel like in terms of longevity and overall comfort, that would be ideal but that’s just a preference, not necessarily a need/requirement in order for it to work as it’s intended to.

My Winkbed Gravity Lux Findings

What first struck me about this mattress is that Winkbeds kept the same quilted foam and Tencel cover as they have on their original model. This makes the mattress look different from the rest but you will also feel the difference right away when you lay on it.

As you can see, they use an optic white fabric that really looks clean and sleek. Tencel fiber is more breathable and softer than cotton so you get the benefits of breathability throughout.

In the picture below I put my 14 lb. bowling ball right up to the edge of the mattress to illustrate sinkage and edge support. You get more cradling out of this mattress than most because they quilt a layer of foam into the cover which makes it feel softer without sacrificing support.

As a side sleeper and occasional stomach sleeper the medium was a good fit although side sleepers would probably enjoy the soft version more while stomach and back sleepers should look at the firm version.

This mattress is about $300 more than your average queen size online mattress but in this case I think you get what you pay for. This mattress is made in the USA and incorporates quality materials throughout. Every layer is an upgrade over your standard 3 layer foam mattress and when you add it all up you can feel the difference. The 1.8 lb. density core foam should hold up for heavier sleepers giving you a few extra years over a standard online mattress which makes it a sound investment.

My Winkbeds Gravity Lux Recommendation

I highly recommend the Winkbeds gravity lux for sleepers that are affected by partner disturbance. This mattress has basically no motion transfer but is about as close as it gets to giving you the benefits of springs. The layering of the mattress will support you where you need it most and provide a bit more sink towards your shoulders. If you like the feel of a traditional, luxury mattress but springs may be keeping you up at night, this would be a great choice. It’s also worth considering if the less expensive options are leaving you wanting more.

Obviously they are coming into our showrooms because the mattress no longer works for them but that is quite remarkable and is a testament to the quality of Tempurpedic and that in this case, you get what you pay for.

Recently, Tempurpedic introduced The Tempur Cloud, their first mattress in a box, or more accurately, in a zippable bag. This reduces shipping costs, eliminates the need to schedule a home delivery and installation, and makes it easier to move it into the room of your choice. I have reviewed 3 other, more expensive Tempurpedic models before the Cloud and I found that while it lacks some of the finer features of the more expensive options, you still get a quality mattress that should outlive most of the other online brands.

This mattress comes in a bag with a zipper on top which makes is very easy to open. There are also handles on each side so you can get it up the stairs. I just dragged mine over each step as a king-size weighs almost 100 lbs. This bag isn’t flimsy either, the handles held up and didn’t come loose at the seams.

Below are the construction details of the mattress. There’s really no mystery to what’s inside. At first glance, you may think this is just an overpriced 3 layer foam mattress. But it’s the quality of the foam that makes all the difference and this is where Tempurpedic really shines. Tempurpedic is still the best when it comes to foam. The feel is consistent, and the foam is dense and durable to last longer than other online brands. Tempur doesn’t get into details on density but ask any Tempurpedic owner and the vast majority will speak to the longevity of the mattress.

My Tempurpedic Cloud Experience

I have been sleeping on this mattress for 3 weeks and it takes some getting used to, especially if you are coming from a mattress with springs. I am used to sleeping on spring and foam mattresses but the Tempurpedic mattresses always feel a bit firm at first. They aren’t kidding when they say they require a break-in period. You need to give the mattress at least a couple of weeks before you can truly tell if it’s right for you. It took me that long and the more I slept on it the more I like it.

Tempurpedic mattresses have no motion transfer. Here is a video illustrating this. Tempurpedic ran commercials in the 90s and 2000s with the wine glasses.

My Tempurpedic Cloud Findings

This mattress is going to feel firmer than your typical medium-firm mattress. I think what they were trying to do here is provide a mattress that is going to appeal to a broad range of sleepers and in that regard, I think they hit the mark. As long as you have the right expectations, you should be happy with this mattress. By that I mean, don’t expect it to sink in all that much. This mattress has great pressure relief but it is not one of those that will provide a pillow top feel. Below you can see that my 14lb. bowling ball doesn’t sink in all that much.

My Tempur Cloud Recommendation

If you always wanted to own a Tempurpedic but were turned off by the price, the Cloud is a great entry model to get all the quality of a Tempurpedic without spending an arm and a leg. You also won’t be sacrificing all that much. Some of the more expensive models offer cooling fabric covers or an extra layer of foam but honestly, the cooling fabrics only provide temporary relief and as I said in my video review, the best way to stay cool is to run a fan and/or the air conditioning although your first step should be to assess what kind of covers you are using. If you have a down comforter, swap it out for a think blanket.

Tempurpedic a great choice for people that want to get it right the first time. The Cloud is an excellent value in that it will last longer than the vast majority of online competitors and you get all the assurances that a big company like Tempurpedic can provide.

My BeautyRest Black Findings

I should point out that this mattress just looks great. The detail in the stitching is beautiful and the logo really pops.

This mattress also has handles stitched on the side which makes it really easy to rotate. If you and your partner are considerably different in size, it’s a good idea to rotate the mattress so it wears evenly.

As you can see from the picture below, my 14 lb. bowling ball doesn’t sink all that much.

In this video I illustrate how it handles motion. although it does have a pocket coil system, because the mattress is so firm, there is very little movement.

I cut into the back side of the mattress to show you each layer. Here’s what it looks like inside. The cover is stitched as opposed to a zipper cover. This made it harder to get into with scissors which is why it doesn’t look so pretty.

Here’s a video showing how each layer reacts. You can’t see the springs in this video because they are behind the perimeter foam.

Finally, I dug into the mattress so that I can show you the pocket coil system.

My BeautyRest Black Calista Recommendation

True to its name, this is a firm mattress. You won’t sink much into this mattress which makes it optimal for stomach sleepers or anyone who likes a firm mattress. I also think it would be a great choice for heavy sleepers as it will give you proper support where you need it and the spring system will work to sink a bit more.

I really like how the Calista is layered. Although it is firm, it didn’t feel hard. You can lay on this mattress for a long time without feeling uncomfortable.

What is the Puffy Lifetime Warranty?

I always advise people to read the fine print but here’s the warranty in a nutshell. I think having a 101 night trial period is more important since it will give you ample time to decide if this is a good fit and if not, it’s a free return within the trial period.

In the event that we in our sole discretion determine that your Defect is legitimate as per this Warranty, your choice in remedies will be:

During your first 10 years of owning your Puffy™, we will replace your bed with a brand new Puffy™ Mattress free of charge.
Beyond the first 10 years, Puffy™ will completely repair or replace your Puffy™ mattress. There may be a $50 shipping charge incurred each way. However, Puffy™ will waive all transportation charges if it is confirmed that a materials or manufacturing defect(s) is(are) present.
At your discretion, Puffy™ offers a “Quick Sleep” offer after the first 10 years of coverage. Should you choose this option you opt to keep your original Puffy™ foam mattress. Instead of us repairing/replacing your original defective mattress, we deliver you a brand new Puffy™ at half of the original price you paid.

My Puffy Lux Findings

Here’s a picture of how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress. As you can see you get quite a bit of sinkage, even more sink than the original Puffy.

In terms of motion transfer there basically isn’t any. It’s an all foam mattress with lots of foam so you won’t wake your partner at night. I don’t think you will be moving much anyway since this mattress is so good at pressure relief you will likely stay in the same position longer on this mattress.

Here’s a look inside the Puffy Lux to give you a better idea of how each layer reacts. The top layer which is the comfort layer is the slowest to relax but that’s because it needs to provide maximum contouring. The middle layer is a transition layer which has some contouring and some support benefits. The bottom layer or base layer is the support layer and provides a solid, consistent sleep surface.

My Puffy Lux Recommendation

While this mattress is a bit pricier than its competitors, I am very happy with how well it relieves pressure. Dedicated side sleepers will really appreciate this and especially if you have tried other soft mattresses that just don’t cut it. I can’t claim that this mattress is for everyone and that’s OK. The Puffy Lux was designed to address the most pressing needs of side sleepers which is shoulder and hip pressure relief and excellent contouring. If you are a side sleeper on the hunt for pain relief and aren’t happy with the alternatives, give the Puffy Lux a try.

Puffy mattresses are highly rated by Consumer Reports. The Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress is ranked #13 in Consumer Reports’ Best Mattresses of 2023 rating. Consumer Reports praises the Puffy Lux for its pressure relief, edge support, and motion isolation.
