Valerian Root: A Natural Remedy for Sleep and Anxiety

valerian root

Valerian root is a flowering herb that has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for sleep problems and anxiety. It is one of the most popular herbal sleep aids on the market, and for good reason. Valerian root has been shown to be effective in improving sleep quality and reducing symptoms of anxiety.

How Does Valerian Root Work?

The exact mechanism by which valerian root works is not fully understood, but it is believed to work by impacting GABA receptors in the brain. GABA is a neurotransmitter that helps to calm the nervous system and promote relaxation. By increasing GABA activity, valerian root may help to ease anxiety and promote better sleep.

Valerian Root for Sleep

Valerian root has been shown to be effective in improving sleep quality in adults with mild insomnia. Studies have shown that valerian root can help people fall asleep faster, sleep more soundly, and wake up feeling more refreshed.

Valerian Root for Anxiety

Valerian root has also been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety. Studies have shown that valerian root can help to reduce anxiety symptoms in people with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Valerian Root: Side Effects and Safety

Valerian root is generally safe and well-tolerated when taken as directed. However, some people may experience mild side effects, such as stomach upset, headache, and dizziness. Valerian root may also interact with certain medications, so it is important to talk to your doctor before taking valerian root if you are taking any other medications.

Valerian root is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for children.

Valerian Root: Dosage

Valerian root is available in a variety of forms, including capsules, tablets, teas, and extracts. The recommended dosage of valerian root varies depending on the form and the specific condition being treated. It is important to follow the dosage instructions on the product label or as directed by your doctor.

Conclusion

Valerian root is a safe and effective natural remedy for sleep problems and anxiety. If you are considering using valerian root, it is important to talk to your doctor first to make sure it is right for you.

Valerian root has a surprisingly rich historical record of use, with its calming properties recognized across various cultures for centuries:

  • Ancient Greece and Rome: Celebrated physicians like Hippocrates and Galen described valerian as a remedy for insomnia and nervousness. It was also employed for other conditions, such as digestive issues and headaches.

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine: Valerian (named Fu Hai) has been used to promote emotional balance and address restlessness and sleep concerns.

  • Ayurvedic Medicine (India): Valerian root was valued for its calming effects on the nervous system, as well as its ability to alleviate anxiety and improve sleep.

  • Medieval Europe: Valerian gained widespread popularity as a treatment for anxiety, sleep problems, and even epilepsy. It was often included in “sleep pillows” filled with calming herbs. Its unique, somewhat unpleasant odor even resulted in nicknames like “cat’s valerian” due to its peculiar attractiveness to cats.

  • Native American Practices: Certain Native American tribes utilized valerian root for its sedative and pain-relieving properties. It was used for headaches, muscle tension, and menstrual discomfort.

Interesting Historical Notes:

  • During World War II, valerian was used in England to cope with the stress and anxiety of air raids.

Andrew Huberman’s Take

There is no evidence that Andrew Huberman endorses Mary Ruth Organics. In fact, Huberman has never mentioned Mary Ruth Organics in any of his public talks or podcasts.

Huberman is a neuroscientist and tenured professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He is also a host of the Huberman Lab podcast, where he discusses neuroscience and its applications to everyday life.

Huberman is a strong advocate for evidence-based information. He often criticizes the supplement industry for making false or misleading claims.

Given Huberman’s commitment to evidence-based information, it is unlikely that he would endorse a supplement brand without seeing strong evidence of its efficacy.

Best Sleep Gummies – Our 10 Favorites for Taste and Effectiveness

Sleep Gummies
In the bustling landscape of health and wellness, gummy supplements have carved out a substantial niche, boasting soaring sales and an ever-growing fan base. This chewable phenomenon represents a shift in the supplement industry, illustrating a broader trend where convenience and enjoyment are merging with health consciousness. Once relegated to the domains of children’s vitamins, gummies have undergone a renaissance, blossoming into a diverse market catering to adults seeking a palatable alternative to traditional pills and powders. Experts attribute this surge in popularity to several factors: Palatability: Gummies offer a pleasant taste and texture, making them an attractive option for those averse to swallowing pills or the often unpleasant flavors associated with liquid supplements. Convenience: The ease of chewing a flavored gummy aligns well with the fast-paced lifestyle of modern consumers. There’s no need for water, they’re portable, and dosing is straightforward, eliminating some of the common barriers to consistent supplement use. Innovative Marketing: Manufacturers have successfully tapped into the wellness zeitgeist, often packaging gummies in eye-catching, Instagram-worthy bottles, and promoting them as not just health aids but lifestyle accessories. Broad Appeal: Gummies have transcended age barriers. While they began as a method to entice children into taking their vitamins, they now appeal to adults who maintain a semblance of childhood nostalgia combined with a health-forward mindset. Variety and Specialization: Today’s gummy supplements come in a wide array of formulations, addressing everything from vitamin deficiencies to sleep support, immune system boosting, and even hair and nail health. This versatility has expanded their market reach. Despite their popularity, gummies also face scrutiny from nutritionists and healthcare professionals. There’s ongoing debate about their efficacy, with some arguing that the process of creating a gummy can dilute the potency of the active ingredients. Additionally, the added sugars and additives necessary to create their appealing taste and texture raise questions about their overall health benefits. Consumer behavior studies suggest that the appeal of gummy supplements is unlikely to wane soon. As the supplement industry continues to innovate, with an eye on clean labeling and sugar-free options, gummy supplements seem poised to maintain their stronghold in the market. In the grand schema of health and nutrition, gummy supplements epitomize how modern consumers are seeking a harmonious blend of health, convenience, and enjoyment in their daily routines, a trend that appears to be more than just a chewable fad.

Why Are Gummies So Popular Now?

Popular Doctors and Podcasters like Andrew Huberman have raised awareness of the importance of sleep and the effectiveness of sleep supplements.

The ascendancy of gummy vitamins and supplements in the consumer market is a phenomenon that has drawn the attention of industry analysts and health professionals alike. Gummies are outpacing traditional pills and tablets in popularity due to a confluence of factors.

Palatability: First and foremost is the appeal to the palate. Gummies often come in a variety of flavors and resemble candy, making them more enjoyable to consume, especially for those who have aversions to swallowing pills or dislike the taste of standard tablets.

Convenience: The chewable nature of gummies dispenses with the need for water, rendering them a convenient on-the-go option. This ease of use is a significant draw for the busy consumer who may be juggling multiple responsibilities and seeking to streamline their health routines.

Innovative Marketing: Gummies have benefited from aggressive marketing campaigns that capitalize on the fun aspect of their consumption, framing them as a less intimidating entry point into dietary supplementation for all age groups.

Perceived Gentleness: There’s a widespread perception that gummies are gentler on the stomach, which can be a crucial deciding factor for individuals with gastrointestinal sensitivities.

Novelty and Variety: The influx of gummies into the market has brought a novelty factor. The range of shapes, colors, and flavors can make taking supplements feel less like a chore and more like a treat, encouraging daily use and adherence to supplement regimens.

Expansion of Target Demographics: While children are a primary audience for gummy vitamins, adults have increasingly become a target demographic. This expansion into the adult market has significantly contributed to the popularity of gummies.

Psychological Comfort: The act of chewing can offer a sense of comfort and satisfaction that swallowing a pill cannot. This psychological comfort is an understated yet powerful aspect of the gummy experience.

Despite these advantages, it is essential to acknowledge the concerns that have surfaced regarding the efficacy and sugar content of gummy vitamins compared to their pill counterparts. Critics argue that gummies can contain fewer nutrients, be less regulated in terms of dosage accuracy, and the inclusion of sugars and additives can detract from their health benefits.

Nevertheless, the surging demand for gummy supplements is an incontrovertible testament to their appeal. Manufacturers are continuously refining their processes to enhance the nutrient profile of gummies and address the concerns related to their sugar content and health efficacy. As the industry evolves, gummies are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but their core advantages of taste, convenience, and consumer appeal remain the driving force behind their popularity.

Sleep Gummies

Ingredients in Sleep Gummies

Below is a list of commonly found constituents in sleep aids, alongside typical dosages as noted in scientific literature and product recommendations. However, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional before taking any supplements, as the appropriate dosage may vary based on individual health needs and potential interactions with other medications.

Melatonin: One of the most widely recognized sleep aids, melatonin is a hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Supplements typically range from 0.5 mg to 5 mg, taken 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime.

Valerian Root: Valerian is an herb that has been used for centuries to treat insomnia. Studies often use dosages ranging from 300 mg to 600 mg, taken an hour before sleep.

Magnesium: This mineral is involved in hundreds of bodily functions, including sleep regulation. Magnesium supplements for sleep are commonly available in doses of 100 mg to 350 mg.

L-Theanine: An amino acid found in tea leaves, L-theanine has a reputation for promoting relaxation without drowsiness. Standard doses are around 100 mg to 200 mg, taken 30 minutes to an hour before bed.

Chamomile: This herb, often consumed as a tea, contains apigenin, an antioxidant that may promote sleepiness. Supplements typically offer 400 mg to 500 mg, but drinking chamomile tea is also a common method of ingestion.

Lavender: The calming scent of lavender can have a mild sedative effect. It’s commonly inhaled as an essential oil, but oral doses in supplements are usually around 80 mg to 160 mg.

Passionflower: Traditionally used for its sedative properties, passionflower can be found in doses of 350 mg to 700 mg, typically consumed an hour before bedtime.

Glycine: An amino acid that some studies suggest might improve sleep quality, recommended supplemental dosages are around 3 grams taken before sleep.

5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan): This compound is a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in sleep. Supplements are typically available in 100 mg to 300 mg doses.

GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid): GABA is a neurotransmitter that can have a calming, inhibitory effect on the brain. Supplemental doses are often around 100 mg to 200 mg.

When considering the use of these ingredients for sleep support, the quality of the supplements, potential side effects, interactions with other medications, and individual health conditions must be taken into account. Furthermore, clinical studies often use specific standardized extracts, and therefore, results may not be directly transferable to all over-the-counter products. It is also important to note that the FDA does not regulate supplements in the same way as pharmaceuticals, and thus, potency and purity can vary between brands and batches. It is always advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before beginning any new supplement regimen.

Sleep Gummies vs. Sleep Pills, Which is Better?

Choosing between sleep gummies and pills depends on several factors, so let’s compare them based on key points:

Similarities:

  • Active Ingredient: Both typically contain melatonin, a hormone regulating sleep-wake cycles.
  • Purpose: Both aim to improve sleep onset and potentially sleep quality.

Differences:

Gummies:

  • Pros:
    • Easier to take: Chewable and potentially appealing for individuals who dislike swallowing pills.
    • Faster absorption: May start working quicker due to quicker digestion compared to pills.
    • Taste: Often come in various flavors, making them more palatable.
  • Cons:
    • Dosage accuracy: Studies have shown some gummies have inaccurate melatonin content, raising safety concerns.
    • Sugar content: May contain added sugar, impacting overall health.
    • Regulation: Often less regulated than prescription sleep aids, so quality and purity might vary.

Pills:

  • Pros:
    • Dosage accuracy: Typically have more consistent melatonin content, ensuring you get the intended dose.
    • No sugar: Avoids potential issues with added sugar intake.
    • More regulated: Subject to stricter manufacturing and quality control standards.
  • Cons:
    • Less palatable: Might be harder to swallow for individuals with swallowing difficulties.
    • Slower absorption: May take longer to take effect compared to gummies.

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your individual needs and preferences:

  • For occasional use and ease of administration: Gummies might be an option, but prioritize reputable brands and be aware of potential dosage discrepancies.
  • For those needing precise dosage, concerned about sugar, or have swallowing difficulties: Pills might be a better choice due to their accuracy, regulation, and lack of sugar.

Important Note:

  • Before using any sleep aid: Consult your doctor, especially if you have underlying health conditions, take other medications, or are pregnant/breastfeeding.
  • Do not rely on sleep aids long-term: Address the root cause of your sleep problems with healthy sleep hygiene practices.

10 Soothing Beverages to Improve Your Sleep: The Science-Backed Guide

Sleep Drinks

Introduction

A good night’s rest is an essential aspect of overall health and well-being. However, many people struggle to achieve the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night. While numerous factors can influence sleep quality, incorporating certain beverages into your nightly routine may help. This science-backed guide explores 10 soothing drinks that can promote relaxation and improve your sleep.

1. Warm Milk

The classic bedtime drink, warm milk, has long been associated with improved sleep. Milk contains tryptophan, an amino acid that converts to serotonin, a neurotransmitter known for promoting relaxation and sleepiness (Zisapel, 2007). Additionally, milk provides calcium, which helps the brain utilize tryptophan more effectively (Lei et al., 2019).

2. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is a popular herbal tea with potential sleep-promoting properties. A study published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing (Chang & Chen, 2016) found that chamomile tea significantly improved sleep quality in postnatal women. This effect may be due to the presence of apigenin, a flavonoid that binds to specific brain receptors and promotes relaxation (Viola et al., 1995).

3. Tart Cherry Juice

Tart cherry juice is a natural source of melatonin, a hormone responsible for regulating sleep cycles (Howatson et al., 2012). A study published in the European Journal of Nutrition (Pigeon et al., 2010) found that consuming tart cherry juice improved sleep duration and quality in participants with insomnia.

4. Valerian Root Tea

Valerian root has been used for centuries to alleviate sleep difficulties. A meta-analysis in the American Journal of Medicine (Fernández-San-Martín et al., 2010) found that valerian root extract significantly improved sleep quality compared to placebo, with minimal side effects.

5. Lavender Tea

Lavender is known for its calming properties, and studies suggest that consuming lavender tea may improve sleep quality. A study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (Kuroda et al., 2005) found that lavender tea reduced heart rate and increased relaxation, leading to improved sleep.

6. Peppermint Tea

Peppermint tea may help improve sleep by reducing muscle tension and promoting relaxation. A study in the International Journal of Neuroscience (Goel et al., 2005) found that peppermint oil inhalation led to significant improvements in sleep quality.

7. Passionflower Tea

Passionflower tea is an herbal tea traditionally used for its calming effects. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics (Ngan & Conduit, 2011) found that passionflower tea significantly improved sleep quality in participants with sleep disorders.

8. Lemon Balm Tea

Lemon balm tea has been shown to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. A study in the journal Phytomedicine (Kennedy et al., 2006) found that participants who consumed lemon balm extract reported improved sleep quality and reduced anxiety levels.

9. Green Tea (Decaffeinated)

Green tea contains L-theanine, an amino acid known for its calming effects. A study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (Yoto et al., 2012) found that L-theanine reduced anxiety and improved sleep quality in participants. Opt for decaffeinated green tea to avoid the stimulating effects of caffeine.

10. Banana-Almond Smoothie

Bananas and almonds are rich in magnesium, which is known to promote relaxation and improve sleep quality (Abbasi et al., 2012). A delicious banana-almond smoothie can provide a healthy dose of magnesium and other sleep-promoting nutrients like potassium and tryptophan. A study in the Journal of Research in Medical Sciences (Abbasi et al., 2012) found that magnesium supplementation improved sleep quality in elderly individuals with insomnia.

Conclusion

Incorporating these 10 soothing beverages into your evening routine may help promote relaxation and improve your sleep quality. While each drink may offer unique benefits, it’s important to remember that individual responses may vary. It’s also crucial to address any underlying sleep disorders or lifestyle factors that may contribute to poor sleep quality. Consult with a healthcare professional if sleep problems persist or worsen.

Additional Tips for Better Sleep

While these soothing beverages can contribute to better sleep, it is important to consider other factors that can affect sleep quality. Here are some additional tips to help you achieve a restful night’s sleep:

  1. Establish a consistent sleep schedule: Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, even on weekends, helps regulate your body’s internal clock and can improve sleep quality.

  2. Create a sleep-friendly environment: Ensure your bedroom is quiet, dark, and cool, and invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows. Eliminate any distractions, such as electronic devices or bright lights.

  3. Limit caffeine and alcohol intake: Both caffeine and alcohol can interfere with sleep, so it’s best to avoid consuming these substances, particularly in the hours leading up to bedtime.

  4. Incorporate relaxation techniques: Mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, or progressive muscle relaxation can help reduce stress and anxiety, making it easier to fall asleep.

  5. Get regular exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity has been shown to improve sleep quality, but avoid vigorous workouts close to bedtime, as they may have a stimulating effect.

  6. Seek professional help if needed: If you consistently experience difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or feel fatigued during the day, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional to identify and address any underlying issues.

Top 10 Best Natural Sleep Aids 2024: Boost Your Sleep Quality and Well-being

Melatonin

Adequate sleep is crucial for maintaining optimal physical and mental health. Sleep plays a vital role in various bodily functions such as learning, memory, decision-making, and creativity (1Trusted Source, 2, 3Trusted Source, 4Trusted Source, 5). Moreover, insufficient sleep has been linked to an increased risk of developing chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity (6).

Despite the importance of sleep, many people struggle to get enough rest each night. Approximately 20% of adults experience occasional insomnia symptoms (7Trusted Source, 8Trusted Source). While good sleep habits are essential, some individuals may require additional support to achieve a restful night’s sleep.

Explore these top 10 natural sleep aids that may help improve your sleep quality and overall well-being:

  1. Melatonin Melatonin is a hormone produced by the body that signals the brain when it’s time to sleep (9Trusted Source). This hormone’s production and release are influenced by the time of day, with levels rising in the evening and falling in the morning. Melatonin supplements have become a popular sleep aid, particularly for those with disrupted melatonin cycles due to jet lag or shift work (10Trusted Source).

Research has shown that melatonin can improve daytime sleep quality and duration, which is particularly helpful for shift workers (11, 12Trusted Source). Melatonin has also been found to reduce sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep) and increase total sleep time in individuals with sleep disorders (13Trusted Source, 14Trusted Source).

Adults can safely use melatonin supplements for short periods, but more research is needed on their long-term effects (15Trusted Source, 16Trusted Source). Pregnant or nursing individuals should avoid melatonin, as its safety and effectiveness remain unclear (15Trusted Source).

  1. Valerian Root Valerian root is a popular herbal supplement used to treat anxiety, depression, and menopause symptoms. It is also widely used in the United States and Europe for promoting sleep (17Trusted Source). While research results are inconsistent, some studies have found improvements in sleep quality and sleep disorder symptoms in menopausal and postmenopausal women (18Trusted Source).

A small study found that taking 530 mg of valerian root nightly for 30 days significantly improved sleep quality, latency, and duration in individuals who had undergone heart surgery (19Trusted Source). Another study reported that valerian root taken before bed for one month improved sleep quality, anxiety, and depression in people undergoing hemodialysis (20Trusted Source).

Short-term intake of valerian root appears to be safe for adults, with minor and infrequent side effects (17Trusted Source). However, the safety of long-term use and its use in pregnant or nursing individuals remains uncertain.

  1. Magnesium Magnesium is a vital mineral involved in numerous bodily processes, including brain function and heart health. It may also help relax the mind and body, making it easier to fall asleep (23Trusted Source). Magnesium’s calming effect may be attributed to its ability to regulate melatonin production and relax muscles (24Trusted Source, 25Trusted Source).

Magnesium supplements come in various forms, some of which combine magnesium with other sleep-promoting ingredients like glycine or melatonin. Studies have shown that magnesium supplementation can reduce sleep latency and improve sleep quality in older adults (29Trusted Source). However, more research is needed to understand the effects of magnesium supplementation on sleep when taken alone.

  1. Lavender Lavender is a versatile plant known for its soothing fragrance, which is believed to enhance sleep. Research suggests that simply inhaling lavender oil before bedtime may improve sleep quality in those with or without insomnia (31Trusted Source, 32Trusted Source).

A small study in older adults with dementia found that lavender aromatherapy improved sleep disturbance symptoms, increasing total sleep time and reducing instances of early waking (33Trusted Source). Another study reported that lavender aromatherapy improved sleep quality and reduced anxiety in individuals with coronary artery disease after 15 days (34Trusted Source).

While lavender aromatherapy is considered safe, oral intake of lavender may cause side effects such as nausea, belching, and diarrhea in some cases (35Trusted Source). More research is needed to understand the effects of lavender supplements on sleep.

    1. Glycine Glycine is an amino acid that may help improve sleep quality by promoting relaxation and reducing core body temperature (36Trusted Source). Studies suggest that taking 3 grams of glycine before bedtime can improve sleep quality, decrease sleep latency, and reduce daytime sleepiness (37Trusted Source, 38Trusted Source).

    2. L-theanine L-theanine is an amino acid found primarily in tea leaves. It is known for its calming effects and has been shown to improve sleep quality and duration (39Trusted Source, 40Trusted Source). A study found that taking 200 mg of L-theanine before bed improved sleep efficiency and reduced awakenings during the night (41Trusted Source).

    3. Ginkgo Biloba Ginkgo biloba is an ancient tree species with various health benefits, including improved cognitive function and reduced anxiety. Some studies suggest that ginkgo biloba may also help improve sleep quality, particularly in individuals with sleep disturbances related to anxiety or depression (42Trusted Source, 43Trusted Source). However, more research is needed to determine the optimal dosage and safety of long-term use.

    4. Chamomile Chamomile is a popular herbal remedy known for its calming effects. It has been used for centuries to treat insomnia and other sleep disorders (44Trusted Source). A review of studies found that chamomile extract significantly improved sleep quality in individuals with chronic insomnia (45Trusted Source). Chamomile tea is a common and safe way to enjoy the sleep-promoting benefits of this herb.

    5. 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) 5-HTP is a naturally occurring amino acid that your body uses to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in regulating sleep. Research indicates that 5-HTP supplements may help improve sleep quality and duration, particularly in those with sleep disorders (46Trusted Source, 47Trusted Source). However, more studies are needed to determine the optimal dosage and long-term safety of 5-HTP supplementation.

    6. Passionflower Passionflower is a plant traditionally used for its calming effects and ability to reduce anxiety. Some studies suggest that passionflower may also help improve sleep quality and reduce insomnia symptoms (48Trusted Source, 49Trusted Source). A study found that drinking passionflower tea one hour before bed significantly improved sleep quality in individuals with insomnia (50Trusted Source). However, more research is needed to understand the optimal dosage and long-term safety of passionflower supplementation.

In conclusion, these natural sleep aids may provide additional support for individuals seeking to improve their sleep quality and overall well-being. It is important to consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen, as individual needs and safety considerations may vary.

Natural Sleep Aids vs. Prescription Sleep Aids: Which Is Better?

When it comes to improving sleep quality, both natural and prescription sleep aids have their advantages and disadvantages. The choice between the two often depends on individual needs, preferences, and health conditions. Here, we compare the benefits and drawbacks of natural sleep aids and prescription sleep aids.

Natural Sleep Aids:

Pros:

  1. Generally considered safer: Natural sleep aids, such as melatonin, valerian root, and magnesium, are typically associated with fewer side effects compared to prescription sleep aids.
  2. Non-habit forming: Most natural sleep aids are not addictive, reducing the risk of dependency.
  3. Holistic approach: Natural sleep aids often work in conjunction with lifestyle changes and good sleep hygiene to promote overall well-being.

Cons:

  1. Inconsistent results: The effectiveness of natural sleep aids may vary between individuals, with some experiencing significant benefits, while others see little to no improvement in their sleep quality.
  2. Limited research: Some natural sleep aids lack extensive scientific research to support their effectiveness and long-term safety.
  3. Slower onset of action: Natural sleep aids may take longer to produce noticeable effects compared to prescription medications.

Prescription Sleep Aids:

Pros:

  1. Stronger effect: Prescription sleep aids are typically more potent and have a faster onset of action, providing quicker relief from sleep disturbances.
  2. Customizable: Healthcare providers can prescribe sleep aids tailored to an individual’s specific needs, adjusting dosages and medication types to achieve optimal results.
  3. Well-studied: Prescription sleep aids have undergone rigorous clinical trials, ensuring their efficacy and safety when used as directed.

Cons:

  1. Side effects: Prescription sleep aids may cause side effects, such as dizziness, daytime drowsiness, and cognitive impairment.
  2. Dependency risk: Some prescription sleep aids can be habit-forming, leading to potential addiction and withdrawal symptoms upon discontinuation.
  3. Short-term solution: Prescription sleep aids are typically recommended for short-term use, as their long-term efficacy and safety are less well-established.

Ultimately, whether natural or prescription sleep aids are better depends on individual circumstances, the severity of sleep disturbances, and personal preferences. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the most suitable option for your specific needs. Remember that sleep aids should be used alongside healthy sleep habits and lifestyle changes for optimal results.

My Remrise Findings

It’s clear that Remrise put a lot of time and effort into developing an optimal blend of ingredients for sleep that you can use on a regular basis that will continue to be effective night after night.

Remrise worked for me the first night. I took mine about an hour before I wanted to fall asleep. I prefer the pills just because it is easier to take by my bedside but the powder is just as effective.

remrise review

They are slightly on the larger side so if you don’t like swallowing pills, this may not be the solution for you.

remrise pills

The powder has a pleasant smell and mixes easily with water, milk or whatever non-caffeinated drink you prefer before bed.

remrise bag

remrise powder

I found Remrise to be more effective than my typical sleep aid, Melatonin. Melatonin is great for helping you fall asleep but chances are you will wake up within a few hours if you aren’t that sleepy and may have trouble getting back to sleep. With Remrise, I was able to stay asleep all night. I still had to get up to use the bathroom at night but I was able to fall asleep soon after getting back to bed.

Keep in mind that it may take a few nights of continued use to notice the full effect. By night 3 I was sleeping great and continue to have more restful sleep a week after starting.

A monthly subscription is about $50 for the pill form which has 28 servings and the powder form is $90 per month with about 30 servings which is pretty expensive for supplements but in my opinion, it may be worth trying if other over-the-counter supplements just aren’t working.

In conclusion, Remrise is a sophisticated take on sleep supplements and I think they are worth considering for people that aren’t responding to other sleep supplements currently available.

CBD Oil Benefits – The Complete Guide

cbd oil benefits
CBD Oil has come under the spotlight, especially in the US, in recent times and has been touted for its many health benefits. Its association with marijuana, however, is still perceived negatively by many who ergo keep this wonderful oil at bay. In this article, we will take a closer look at some of CBD oil benefits and the science behind it. Without any further ado, let’s get started.

known cbd oil benefitsCBD Oil Benefits for Diabetes and Obesity

A whopping 100 million adults in the US are now officially either diabetic or pre-diabetic, and the epidemic seems to be creeping into minors as well. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association has revealed that over 32% of American men and over 35% of American women are obese (more than just overweight). While everyone has a row about whether a plant-based diet is a way to go or a ketogenic diet is truly what can help reverse type 2 diabetics, we should not overlook CBD oil benefits for both diabetes and obesity. So, what do the studies say?
  • A 2011 American Journal of Epidemiology study found that rates of obesity in a sample group as large as 52,000 cannabis users were only 1/3rd the prevalent rates in the general population.
  • Another study found that the use of CBD resulted in a lowering of the diabetes incidence rate in mice.
  • Research supports that CBD aides in weight loss by acting as a catalyst in the conversion of white fat into brown fat.

Improved Cholesterol Profile and Reduced Risk of Heart Disease

A Staggering 1 in 4 deaths in the US is due to heart disease. Again, while lifestyle, diet and genetic predisposition are some of the main factors that determine your risk of a heart attack or heart disease. There are certainly other things along the way that can either add to the risk or take away from it. Thankfully, CBD oil benefits include a reduction in the risk of heart disease and also an improved cholesterol profile as studies have concluded.
  • A study from 2013 concluded that CBD oil users had a higher level of good cholesterol in their blood than their counterparts.
  • More studies also provide evidence to support that endocannabinoid signaling plays a crucial role in the pathology of atherogenesis.
  • Initial clinical studies on animals also proved that CBD oil in low orally ingested doses had a cardioprotective effect during the induction of a heart attack.

Lowered Risk of Cancer

CBD oil benefits are several, but there is a growing amount of evidence which is starting to suggest that it might have some tumor-fighting properties as well.
  • Animal trials conducted in 2012 suggests that animals that were medicated with CBD oil actually responded positively in terms of a reduction in the likelihood of developing colon cancer. These animals were deliberately given carcinogens for the sake of the test.
  • Numerous studies have already shown that THC doesn’t only prevent tumors but also helps in preventing them in the first place.
  • A 2015 data analysis done by scientists where the records of 84,000 male patients revealed that patients that had used cannabis, and not tobacco had a 45% lower bladder cancer rate than the other group.

Mental Health Benefits

CBD oil and cannabinoids, in general, are neuroprotective, which means that they play a vital role in regulating brain health. One of the ways in which CBD oil does this is by removal of damaged cell, and another is through improved efficiency of mitochondria. Furthermore, CBD Oil is also said to reduce glutamate toxicity which is responsible for over firing of brain cells by over – stimulation which causes pre – mature cell death.
  • A recent study suggests that CBD oil benefits include having an anti-inflammatory effect on the brain.
  • Another study, which was done in 2008, in lower dosages, CBD oil actually stimulated the birth and development of new brain cells, even in older brains.
  • CBD oil benefits the brain and protects against Alzheimer’s and other nerve-related degenerative diseases.

Protection Against Bone Disease

The bone that is aging is replaced by the new bone substrate, and the rate at which this happens annually is approximately 10% in humans. This process is natural and critical for strong, healthy bones and skeletal framework altogether. There are numerous CBD oil benefits when it comes to healthy bones in humans.
  • A study using CBD oil showed that CBD oil actually reduced the build-up for destructive bone compounds that work by destroying bone-building compounds.
  • CBD explicitly also stimulates the process of healing of broken bones at an accelerated rate, as per another study.
  • Another CBD oil benefit is protection against recurring fracture in a bone that has already been fractured once and is vulnerable to another. This study revealed that fractured and healed bones in the CBD focus group were 35% stronger, on average, that the non – CBD counterpart.

Fights Skin Ailments and Helps Keep Skin Healthy

In human physiology, the skin is the organ with the single highest concentration of CB2 receptors. CBD oil can literally be applied topically on the skin, and there are a multitude of CBD oil benefits for the skin when it is used this way.
  • It helps repair against free radical damage, reverse free radical damage and could also prevent free radical damage on the skin to a certain extent as per studies.
  • It can help in the proper regulation of oil from the sebaceous glands of the skin
  • CBD oil based topical creams and oils are already popular products for the treatment of skin conditions such as acne and even psoriasis.
Worry not, Cannabis when used topically cannot be psychoactive, and so you will not experience any “high.”

Anti-Inflammatory Benefits of CBD

Several studies have concluded that CBD oil has anti-inflammatory benefits. It does this by way of engaging with the Endocannabinoid system across all organs of the human body and assists in bring down inflammation. Inflammation is the cause of a wide range of diseases and the fact that CBD oil benefits include anti-inflammatory properties make it even more of a holistic medicine than initially thought.

Reducing Cortisol

Cortisol is the stress hormone, and in this day and age, it is usually elevated in the average American. The plant has been used from centuries ago to reduce anxiety and calm down people. However, it must be noted that some studies have shown that in certain patients, Cannabis can have a reverse effect and actually increase anxiety and even lead to panic attacks. In general, CBD oil is shown to reduce stress-related activity in the Limbic and Paralimbic parts of the brain directly. Other better – known CBD oil benefits, include the treatment of Insomnia and other sleep disorders and also to alleviate pain naturally, it is said to be one of the most effective treatments. Sleep Relief from NBI

Sleep Relief

Sleep Relief NBI

I was given a bottle of the  Sleep Relief sleep supplement for review and I was really impressed by its efficacy not only to help me fall asleep but keep me asleep throughout the night. NBI is a family-owned company started by Dr. John Neustadt who has an international reputation as a researcher and integrative medical expert. He is frequently cited in medical literature and creates formulations based on reviews of thousands of scientific studies. You can read more about his accomplishments here but in short, NBI is not just another supplement company.

A vast number of people in the US and around the world suffer from sleep-related disorders. Blame it on lifestyle changes or poor sleep hygiene, but sleep disorders are on the rise. This isn’t good news because failing to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night can increase the risk of several major health problems.

No one likes to be sleep-starved, and this is evident from the endless means people are willing to try for better rest. Sleeping pills are the most common means that people resort to when they can’t sleep. There was a time when sleeping pills had to be prescribed by a doctor. But now, over-the-counter sleeping pills are easily available for everyone to buy whenever they want and keep popping them for better sleep. This isn’t always the right thing to do, because sleeping pills become addictive and increase the user’s dependence on them. But since they work almost instantly, they remain popular despite the various side effects.

Given that sleeping pills will never go out of business, pharmaceutical companies are coming up with healthier versions of sleep aids. Sleeping pills usually have a lot of synthetic chemicals, with long-term side effects. But the healthier versions of sleeping pills help people fall asleep gently without becoming addictive.

Sleep Relief by leading healthcare company NBI Health is one such sleep aid that claims to be non- addictive and made from herbal ingredients. These promises have already made this product a huge hit in the market.

Background of Sleeping Pills

From the ancient times, there have been various forms of sleeping aid available. Excessive alcohol consumption led to drowsiness and sleep while certain herbs were also used for better sleep at night. Sleeping pills as we know them today has been available from as early as the late 19th century. Until then different kinds of herbs were utilized by people to make sleep potions. From the late 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, chemistry progressed and led to the invention of formal drugs to induce sleep. In fact, morphine derived from opium was one of the leading sleep medications of the time, and so were cannabis. Even Queen Victoria used to be prescribed cannabis for pain relief and better sleep.

Right from the beginning, sleep medications have been widely abused. Even until the early 1970s sleep medication was only prescribed by a doctor. Only after the late 1980s, over-the-counter sleeping pills started to be available. A very popular sleep supplement today is a melatonin which boosts the melatonin production in the body and brings on better sleep. Old formulations are also been revised to be made more effective. Because of the craze surrounding natural products, herbal sleep supplements have gained worldwide popularity.

Sleep Relief Review and Ingredients

Sleep Relief BottleNBI claims that Sleep Relief is made with a proprietary “bi-phasic, time-release technology.” This means the nutrients are released in two stages. First comes the quick-release stage, where nutrients are delivered and start acting in 30 to 45 minutes, naturally promoting rest and helping the user gently fall asleep. Next comes the second stage, which is called the sustained-release phase. In this stage, the rest of the nutrients are delivered over the next four hours, helping the user stay asleep throughout the night.

This supplement claims to be nonaddictive and does not make the user dependent on the drug. The ingredients used in the product directly act on the entire sleep cycle to gently promote relaxation and sleep. The major ingredients in the product are:

Melatonin: This sleep hormone is used in various sleep supplements in minimal quantities. When people have low melatonin production, they find it hard to fall or stay asleep. Sleep Relief contains just 1 mg of melatonin, which when combined with the other ingredients boost melatonin production.

Magnesium: Sleep Relief also contains magnesium, which is a gentle muscle relaxer. It helps the body and mind relax and get into a state of rest.

Amino acids: This sleep aid also contains a number of sleep-promoting amino acids such as: L-Tryptophan, which is converted into serotonin, the mood-boosting hormone, and melatonin, the sleep hormone; L-Theanine, which boost Alpha wave brain activity helping the person fall asleep quickly; and Glycine and GABA, which are nutrients acting like calming neurotransmitters to promote rest and relaxation.

Herbs: Sleep Relief contains numerous healing and adaptogenic herbs. The herbs hops and skullcap have been around since ancient times and have been used for healing and relaxation purposes. The adaptogenic herbs Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) are widely used in traditional Asian medicine for stress relief, relaxation and sleep. All of these herbs are added as standardized extracts to maintain consistency and uniformity.

My Sleep Relief Findings

The serving size listed on the bottle is two caps which is a 30 day supply per bottle. I took two caps to start but eventually went down to 1 cap which was still effective for me.

Here’s what the capsules look like. They are about as big as a penny.

sleep relief pills

Normally I will take 2-3 milligrams of melatonin to help me fall asleep. Although that will definitely help me fall asleep I notice that I will wake up about 2 hours later and then have trouble falling back asleep. That’s why I like Sleep Relief pills. They help keep me asleep for more uninterrupted sleep. I don’t take them often, but I am glad that I have them to keep me on a regular sleep schedule.

I have tried many over the count sleep supplements but so far Sleep Relief has without a doubt been the most effective for me.

Sleep Relief is priced at $32 for one bottle, which contains 60 tablets. The product is wheat- , corn- , dairy- , and soy-free, and have no added colors, preservatives or flavors. As of now, it is only available on the NBI website.

Multivitamins do not contain much of these two nutrients so you may need to take a supplement if you lack these two essential nutrients in your diet.  You should also make sure that you get a minimum of 400 IU of Vitamin D3 daily. This vitamin plays a critical role in the absorption of calcium in your body.

Melatonin: This is a natural hormone that helps in regulating your sleep-wake cycle, also known as circadian cycles. According to studies, melatonin does not only help some people fall asleep, but it also enhances sleep quality. Experts say that it comes in two forms – immediate release and extended release. If you have difficulty falling asleep, the immediate release may be the better option to take before bedtime. For those who tend to wake up in the middle of the night, extended relief may be better. Melatonin supplements can also be an effective treatment for certain sleep disorders, including jet lag.

Kava: A member of the pepper family, the Kava plant has been shown to help in relieving anxiety. A review of six studies showed that patients who took Kava showed reduced anxiety compared with patients who took a placebo. According to another small study, Kava helps in improving sleep in people suffering from stress-related insomnia. However, it is important to consult a doctor before using Kava supplements to find out if it is safe for you as the FDA has issued a warning that there is a link between this supplement and the risk for severe liver damage.

Passion Flower: As you may already know, passion flower has a wide range of health benefits, including calming and anti-anxiety effects. Anxiety can have a major effect on sleep as you are unable to turn your brain off, in particular when you are trying to get some rest. Passion flower supplement is great as it can have a calming effect that helps in stopping that vicious cycle of thought. It has been found that passionflower is one of the most effective natural anti-anxiety sleep aids that do not result in lingering fatigue the next day.

St. John’s Wort: Do you have trouble sleeping due to depression? St. John’s Wort supplements may be the solution to your problem. According to recent studies, this herb contains chemicals like adhyperforin and hyperforin which act as small messengers in the brain that affect mood and work as effective and powerful antidepressants. If it is your depression that is keeping you from sleeping or getting a full night of restful sleep, it may be worthwhile to try out St. John’s Wort supplements to treat the depression. If it works, you may be able to get the rest and sleep that your body and mind need.

While many people use over-the-counter sleep aids to help them with their sleep problems, they do not realize that these OTC products may cause serious side effects in the long run and over time, lose their effectiveness. Natural sleep supplements like the ones mentioned above are safer and better options, plus they work very well in treating various sleep disorders, helping you sleep better and thereby improving your health.
