“Fiberglass-free” and “organic” are not the same claim. A mattress can be free of fiberglass without a single organic certification, and shoppers searching for fiberglass are usually asking one narrow question: if this cover comes off, or the fabric splits, is there glass fiber inside? This page answers that question only for mattresses where we can show the brand’s own published statement — and it tells you plainly which beds we could not verify.
Why fiberglass is in mattresses at all
Every mattress sold in the United States has to resist an open flame under federal flammability rules. Woven glass fiber is a cheap, effective way to meet that standard, so many manufacturers wrap the foam core in a fiberglass sock beneath the outer cover. It is safe while it stays sealed. The problem starts when the cover is unzipped and removed for washing, or when the fabric wears through: fine glass fibers can escape into bedding, carpet, and air ducts and are difficult and expensive to clean up. Alternative barriers exist — wool, rayon, hydrated silica, thistle pulp, and treated cotton blends — and the brands below use those instead.
How we verified each mattress on this page
We do not infer a fiberglass-free build from a material list, a certification logo, or the word “natural”. A mattress qualifies only when we have stored a specific published brand statement, with a link and the exact wording quoted, and it is a mattress we have measured in our own testing. Every mattress below is here for two reasons: the brand publishes a statement that its mattresses contain no fiberglass, and we have measured the mattress ourselves. 142 mattresses: 51 with complete standardized lab records and 91 with partial records. Partial means some standardized measurements are available, but the full testing record is not yet complete.

What we could not verify
This list is intentionally incomplete. As of this update we hold documented fiberglass-free statements for 7 brands represented above, and we do not yet hold a first-party statement we consider sufficient for: Birch, Purple, Leesa, GhostBed, Nectar, DreamCloud. Those brands are not accused of anything — we simply will not publish a safety claim we cannot source. Several manufacturers have also changed fire barriers over time, so an older mattress from a brand listed above may not match the brand’s current construction.
How to check the mattress you already own
Read the law tag first: barrier materials are sometimes listed there, and wording such as “glass fiber” is the tell. Do not unzip the cover to look. If the cover has a zipper, treat it as structural rather than removable, and wash the mattress protector instead. If you suspect glass fiber has already escaped, stop vacuuming with a standard machine, keep the room closed, and ask the manufacturer about their remediation policy before doing anything else. When you contact a brand, ask one direct question: what material is your fire barrier made of, on this exact model, in this manufacturing year?
Frequently asked questions
Is fiberglass in a mattress dangerous?
Sealed inside an intact cover it is not considered a health hazard. The risk comes from release — a removed cover, a torn seam, or a worn panel — because the fibers irritate skin, eyes, and airways and spread easily through a home.
Does organic mean fiberglass-free?
Usually, but not automatically, and the reverse is definitely untrue: plenty of fiberglass-free mattresses are conventional foam or hybrid builds with no organic certification. If fiberglass is your concern, look for a statement about the fire barrier specifically, not a general materials claim. Our organic mattress guide covers the certification side.
Can I just remove the cover to check?
No. Removing a zippered cover is the single most common way fiberglass gets released into a home. Ask the manufacturer instead.
Which fire barriers are used instead?
The ones documented on this page include organic wool, rayon barriers, non-woven hydrated silica blends, plant-based thistle pulp, and cotton-rayon blends. All meet the same federal flammability standard as fiberglass.
Can I see these mattresses in person?

What if my mattress is not on this list?
It means we have no documented statement, not that it contains fiberglass. Contact the manufacturer with the model name and ask about the fire barrier, and compare measured performance in our mattress comparison tool.
