The Helix Kids is a flippable hybrid mattress offered in twin and full sizes. Its two sides have different feels, and families can choose a standard or lower profile. This guide covers the current options, buying terms and the practical safety checks for a child’s bed.

Our verdict

The Helix Kids is worth considering if you want a two-sided mattress that can provide different feels as your child grows. The lower profile offers another option for a compatible bunk or trundle. Compare the actual frame requirements, cover, price and return terms before choosing a configuration.

How the two sides work

Helix describes the firmer side for ages 2–7 and the softer side for ages 8 and up. These are the manufacturer’s guidelines; follow the label on the model you receive. A child’s comfort and the fit of the bed frame still matter. The mattress is designed for a child’s bed, not for use as an infant crib mattress.

For infants, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises a separate, firm, flat sleep surface in a crib, bassinet or play yard that meets applicable safety standards, with no loose bedding or soft objects.

6-inch vs. 8-inch models

OptionWhat Helix listsCheck before buying
8-inch standardFlippable hybrid with a standard water-repellent cover.Bed height, frame fit and selected cover.
8-inch with coolingCooling fabric on the older-child side.Helix says that cooling surface is not water- or stain-repellent.
6-inch low profileA shorter flippable option for bunk or trundle use.The bed manufacturer’s maximum mattress height and guardrail clearance.

Helix lists twin and full sizes. Verify the exact model listing, dimensions and availability when ordering; a water-repellent finish is not the same as a waterproof protector.

Bunk and frame safety

Follow the bunk-bed manufacturer’s mattress-size and maximum-thickness label; a 6-inch mattress is not automatically compatible with every bunk. The CPSC requires upper-bunk guardrails to extend at least five inches above the mattress. Children under six should not use the upper bunk. Use the correct guardrails, ladder and hardware, and check the bed for recalls.

Use a sturdy, properly supported foundation as specified by Helix. Check the overall height and accessibility of a standard bed as well, and choose a fitted protector compatible with the mattress and the child’s bed.

Materials and cleaning

Helix describes foam comfort layers on either side of individually wrapped coils. Cover and cooling options vary with height and configuration. Helix says the mattress is not made with organic materials; its certifications address specific material or emissions standards, rather than meaning the bed is chemical-free.

Check the care instructions for the exact cover. Do not assume every cover is removable or machine washable. For accidents, a separate fitted waterproof protector can make cleanup easier; choose one appropriate for the mattress and the child’s age.

Price, trial and warranty

Price varies with size, height, cover and promotion. Helix currently advertises a 365-night trial for qualifying direct purchases of the Kids mattress and a limited lifetime warranty for eligible recent purchases; older purchases follow their original terms. Read the written conditions and any break-in requirements.

Eligible mattresses purchased from Yawnder have a 100-night trial with a 30-night minimum and a $200 refund processing fee, waived for eligible exchanges; restrictions apply. See Yawnder’s return policy and confirm the terms for your order. Helix-direct purchases follow Helix’s separate trial. See current Helix Kids pricing. Frequently asked questions

Which side should face up?

Helix labels the firmer side for ages 2–7 and the softer side for ages 8 and up. Check the label and instructions on the mattress.

Can an infant use it?

This is a twin or full child’s mattress, not a crib mattress. Follow pediatric safe-sleep guidance for infants.

Is the 6-inch version safe for every bunk bed?

No. Follow the bunk’s mattress dimensions and thickness limits, use guardrails, and check that the guardrails are at least five inches above the mattress. Children under six should not use the upper bunk.

Is the mattress waterproof?

The standard cover is described as water-repellent, not waterproof. Helix says the cooling cover on the older-child side is not water- or stain-repellent.

Can I wash the cover?

Follow the label on the specific model. Do not assume it can be removed or machine washed; a separate washable protector can be useful.
