Mattress Flame Barriers Explained (Plus Brand Fiberglass Database)
Every US mattress must pass federal flammability tests. Here are the barrier materials brands use, why fiberglass became a problem, and our documented brand-by-brand status.
Federal rules require every mattress sold in the United States to pass flammability performance testing — a cigarette-ignition test and an open-flame test. The rules specify performance, not materials, so each manufacturer chooses how to meet them. That choice is what shoppers are really asking about when they ask about fiberglass.

What the law requires
Two federal standards apply: one addressing cigarette ignition of the mattress surface and one addressing open-flame performance of the mattress and foundation set. Both are performance tests, verified by the manufacturer’s testing and record-keeping obligations. Nothing in either standard requires fiberglass, wool, or any specific material — which is why identical compliance can sit behind very different builds.
Why fiberglass became the issue
A woven glass-fiber sock is an inexpensive, effective barrier as long as it stays sealed inside the mattress. The failures that generated news coverage and lawsuits happened when covers were unzipped or torn: fine glass fibers escaped into homes, embedded in fabrics and were difficult to remove. The material is not a mystery hazard when intact; the risk is a removable cover over a glass-fiber barrier, which is why “do not remove the cover” warnings appear on the law tag.
How to find out what is in your mattress
Three reliable methods, in order. First, the brand’s own published statement — a support-page answer naming barrier material. Second, the law tag sewn to the mattress, which lists fiber content by percentage; glass fiber appears there when present. Third, asking the brand in writing for the barrier material by name. Reviews and “eco” language are not evidence. If none of those produce an answer, the honest status is unknown.
Should you avoid fiberglass?
Our position is narrower than most: an intact mattress with a glass-fiber barrier is not a hazard you need to flee, but a bed with a removable, washable cover over a glass-fiber sock is a real risk of a very expensive mistake, because someone will eventually unzip it. If you want to avoid the question entirely, buy from a brand that publishes its barrier material — and never remove a mattress cover, regardless of what is inside.
Where certifications fit
No certification in the certifications hub certifies “fiberglass-free” as such. CertiPUR-US covers foam, not barriers. GREENGUARD Gold measures emissions. GOTS may cover a wool barrier because wool is a textile fiber. So a fiberglass answer almost always comes from the brand or the law tag, not a logo.

Do all mattresses contain fiberglass?
No. Federal flammability rules specify performance, not materials, and many brands use wool, silica-based fabric, plant-based barriers or inherently flame-resistant fibers instead.

Is fiberglass in a mattress dangerous?

Can I remove my mattress cover to wash it?
Only if the manufacturer says so explicitly. Many law tags warn against it, and removing a cover over a glass-fiber barrier can contaminate a home.
Are chemical flame retardants still used in mattresses?
They are far less common in mattresses than they once were, and many brands publish statements that they use none. Ask for that statement in writing.
