Mattress Performance

Motion Transfer

Rated 2 out of 5

The Serta Arctic mattress is designed to minimize motion transfer, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. The coils are designed to isolate motion, so when one person moves or gets in and out of bed, the motion is not transferred to the other side of the mattress.

In addition to the coils, the memory foam comfort layer also helps to absorb and minimize motion transfer. Memory foam has the ability to contour to the body’s curves and absorb movement, which helps to reduce the impact of movements from one side of the bed to the other.

Overall, the combination of individually wrapped coils and memory foam in the Serta Arctic mattress should provide excellent motion isolation, making it a great choice for couples or anyone who is easily disturbed by their partner’s movements during the night.

Pressure Relief

Rated 3 out of 5

The feel of the Serta Arctic mattress will depend on the firmness level that you choose. Here is a general overview of how the different firmness levels might feel:

  • Plush: The plush version of the Serta Arctic mattress will have a soft and cozy feel, with plenty of cushioning from the memory foam comfort layer. This firmness level is ideal for side sleepers or those who prefer a softer sleeping surface.

  • Medium: The medium firmness level of the Serta Arctic mattress will have a balance of softness and support, with enough cushioning to contour to your body without feeling too plush. This firmness level is suitable for most sleepers, including back and stomach sleepers.

  • Firm: The firm version of the Serta Arctic mattress will have a firmer feel with less give from the memory foam comfort layer. This firmness level is ideal for those who prefer a firmer sleeping surface, including stomach sleepers or those with back pain.

Overall, the Serta Arctic mattress should feel comfortable and supportive, with a combination of innerspring coils and memory foam to provide a balance of cushioning and support. The cooling technology of the cover can also help regulate your body temperature while you sleep, keeping you comfortable throughout the night.

Temperature Regulation

Rated 4 out of 5

The Serta Arctic mattress features a cooling cover that is designed to regulate body temperature and help you sleep comfortably throughout the night. The cover is made with a blend of cooling yarns and breathable materials that wick away moisture and heat from the body.

Compared to traditional innerspring mattresses, which may trap heat and cause discomfort, the Serta Arctic mattress’s cooling technology provides a significant improvement in temperature regulation.

The cooling technology in the Serta Arctic mattress works by allowing air to flow through the mattress and dissipate heat. This helps to prevent the buildup of heat and moisture that can make sleeping uncomfortable, especially for hot sleepers.

In addition to the cooling cover, the memory foam comfort layer in the Serta Arctic mattress is also designed to be breathable and promote airflow. This helps to prevent the buildup of heat and allows you to sleep more comfortably.

Overall, the cooling technology in the Serta Arctic mattress should help to regulate your body temperature and keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night, allowing you to get a more restful and rejuvenating sleep.

Edge Support

Rated 4.4 out of 5

The Serta Arctic mattress is designed with a supportive core of individually wrapped coils, which provide a stable base and help to prevent sagging or excessive motion transfer. Additionally, the mattress is designed with edge support, which helps to reinforce the edges of the mattress and prevent excessive sinking or roll-off.

The level of edge support in the Serta Arctic mattress may vary depending on the firmness level you choose. The plush version may have less edge support compared to the firmer versions, but in general, the mattress should provide a stable sleeping surface, even near the edges.

That being said, whether you roll off the mattress or not will depend on your sleeping habits and the size of the mattress. If you tend to move around a lot during the night or sleep near the edge of the bed, you may be more likely to roll off, especially if the mattress is smaller than your body size. It’s always a good idea to choose a mattress size that fits your body size and sleeping habits to minimize the risk of rolling off.

How Easy is it to Change Positions?

Rated 4.4 out of 5

Rolling over during the night is a natural part of sleeping and is important for maintaining healthy circulation and preventing discomfort. The Serta Arctic mattress should allow you to roll over comfortably without feeling like you’re sinking in too deeply or struggling to move around.

However, the ease with which you can roll over may depend on the firmness level you choose. The plush version of the Serta Arctic mattress may offer a softer and more cushioned sleeping surface, which may make it easier to sink in and change positions. The firmer versions may offer more resistance, which may require more effort to roll over but may also provide more support and prevent excess sinking. It’s important to choose a firmness level that feels comfortable and supportive for your sleeping needs.

Sex

Rated 4.4 out of 5

How cool you will stay during sex will depend on various factors, including the ambient temperature, the level of physical activity, and your own personal preferences. It’s also worth noting that the Serta Arctic mattress is designed to provide a supportive sleeping surface, and while it should be comfortable for sexual activity, the firmness level may affect how much bounce and motion transfer the mattress provides.

Overall, the cooling technology in the Serta Arctic mattress should help to regulate your body temperature and keep you comfortable during sex.

Off-Gassing

Rated 4.4 out of 5

It is not normal for the Serta Arctic mattress to smell like farts. The mattress is made with high-quality materials that are designed to be safe and odorless. However, it is possible for any new mattress to have a slight odor due to the manufacturing process or the materials used.

If you do notice a slight odor when you first unbox the Serta Arctic mattress, this is likely due to off-gassing, which is a common occurrence with foam-based mattresses. The odor should dissipate within a few days as the mattress airs out and any volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may be present are released.

If you are particularly sensitive to odors or concerned about off-gassing, you can try airing out the mattress in a well-ventilated room for a few days before using it. You can also consider using a mattress protector or cover to help minimize any odors or allergens that may be present.

Side Sleepers:

Side sleeping is a common and healthy sleeping position that can help reduce snoring, alleviate acid reflux, and promote healthy circulation. The Serta Arctic mattress should provide a comfortable and supportive sleeping surface for side sleepers, thanks to its combination of memory foam and innerspring coils.

However, the level of support and comfort you experience may depend on the firmness level you choose. A plush version of the mattress may offer more cushioning and contouring for side sleepers, while a firmer version may provide more support and prevent excessive sinking.

Back Sleepers:

While it’s always possible to experience sweating during sleep, the cooling technologies in the Serta Arctic mattress should help to minimize the amount of sweat that accumulates and help to keep you comfortable throughout the night. However, how much you sweat may depend on factors such as your individual physiology, the ambient temperature, and your level of physical activity during sleep.

Overall, the Serta Arctic mattress is designed to promote a comfortable and cool sleeping environment, which should help to minimize the amount of back sweat you experience. However, it’s important to keep in mind that everyone’s experience is unique, and there may be other factors that can affect your level of sweating during sleep.

Stomach Sleepers:

Stomach sleeping can cause the body to overheat and lead to sweating, as it can put pressure on the chest and stomach, leading to increased body temperature. Additionally, stomach sleeping can put extra pressure on the neck and spine, leading to discomfort and muscle tension.

The Serta Arctic mattress is designed to promote a cool and comfortable sleeping environment, with a combination of cooling technologies and supportive materials. However, if you tend to sleep on your stomach and experience sweating, there are a few things you can do to help mitigate this:

  1. Use breathable bedding: Opt for lightweight, breathable bedding made from materials such as cotton or bamboo. These materials are more breathable and allow for better airflow, which can help to reduce sweating.

  2. Keep the room cool: Keep the ambient temperature of your bedroom cool to prevent overheating. You can use a fan or air conditioning to help regulate the temperature.

  3. Consider changing your sleep position: Stomach sleeping is generally not recommended as it can cause discomfort and strain on the neck and spine. Consider trying a different sleep position, such as side sleeping or back sleeping, which may be more comfortable and help reduce sweating.

  4. Try a cooler pillow: A cooler pillow, such as one made with cooling gel or other temperature-regulating materials, can help to reduce overheating and sweating.

Overall, while the Serta Arctic mattress is designed to promote a cool and comfortable sleeping environment, if you tend to sleep on your stomach and experience sweating, there are several other factors to consider in addition to your mattress.

All You Wanted to Know about Yawning

Where did the word Yawn come from?

The word “yawn” comes from the Old English word “gionian,” which meant “to open the mouth wide, gape.” This word is related to the Old Norse word “gina,” which also meant “to yawn.” The word “yawn” has been used in English since at least the 14th century to describe the act of opening one’s mouth wide when tired or bored. Over time, the word has also been used to describe similar actions in animals, such as when a lion yawns before roaring. Today, the word “yawn” is widely used in English to refer to the act of opening one’s mouth wide and inhaling deeply, often as a sign of tiredness or boredom.

What is Yawning?

Yawning is a natural and common phenomenon that occurs in humans and many other animals. When we yawn, we involuntarily open our mouth wide, inhale deeply, and exhale audibly. The exact function of yawning is not fully understood, but there are several theories about why we yawn.

One theory is that yawning helps to regulate the temperature of the brain. When we inhale deeply during a yawn, cool air enters our nasal passages and then travels to the brain, which helps to cool down the brain. This may explain why we tend to yawn more frequently when we’re tired or sleepy, as our brain temperature tends to increase in those states.

Another theory is that yawning is a way to increase oxygen intake and promote alertness. When we yawn, we take in a large amount of air, which increases our oxygen levels and can help to increase our level of alertness.

Yawning is also known to be contagious. When we see someone else yawn, we often feel the urge to yawn as well. This is known as contagious yawning, and it is thought to be related to empathy and social bonding. Contagious yawning has been observed in many different animal species, including primates, dogs, and even birds.

Overall, yawning is a complex phenomenon that likely has multiple functions and is influenced by various physiological and psychological factors. While much research has been conducted on yawning, there is still much to learn about this mysterious behavior.

Who Yawns?

Yawning is observed in many animal species, not just humans. Some animals that are known to yawn include:

  1. Primates – chimpanzees, baboons, and gorillas have been observed yawning
  2. Dogs – it is common for dogs to yawn, especially when they are tired or stressed
  3. Cats – cats also yawn, although not as frequently as dogs
  4. Birds – some birds, such as parrots, have been observed yawning
  5. Reptiles – some reptiles, such as snakes, have been observed yawning
  6. Fish – some fish, such as goldfish, have been observed yawning

It’s worth noting that the exact function of yawning in different animal species may differ, and more research is needed to fully understand the role of yawning in different animals.

Can You Make People Yawn?

if you’re looking to make someone yawn, you might try yawning in front of them, or showing them a video of someone else yawning. It’s worth noting that not everyone is susceptible to contagious yawning, and factors like age, empathy, and social connection may influence whether someone is more or less likely to yawn in response to seeing someone else yawn.

Do Women Yawn More than Men?

There is no clear consensus on whether women yawn more than men or vice versa. Some studies have found that women may yawn slightly more often than men, while others have found no significant difference between the sexes. It is worth noting, however, that there are many factors that can influence yawning, including age, activity level, time of day, and other individual differences, so it is difficult to make generalizations about yawning based solely on gender. Overall, yawning is a complex behavior that is not fully understood, and there is still much research to be done to fully understand its causes and functions.

Who Has the Loudest Yawn?

It’s difficult to determine which animal has the loudest yawn as there are many factors that can affect the loudness of a yawn, such as the size and shape of the animal’s respiratory system, the strength of the muscles used to yawn, and the distance between the animal and the person or equipment measuring the sound.

However, some animals, such as lions and tigers, are known for their powerful roars, which may be accompanied by a yawn-like opening of the mouth. These big cats have a powerful respiratory system and strong muscles that allow them to produce loud vocalizations. So, it’s possible that their yawns may also be relatively loud compared to other animals.

Why do we yawn when we are bored?

Yawning has been linked to a variety of physiological and psychological factors, and one of the theories about why we yawn when we’re bored is related to our level of arousal and attention. When we’re bored, our level of arousal and attention tends to decrease, which can lead to a decrease in our heart rate, breathing rate, and body temperature. Yawning may help to counteract these effects by increasing our heart rate, breathing rate, and oxygen levels, which can help to boost our level of alertness and arousal.

Famous Yawns in Film

Yawning is a natural behavior that people do every day, and it’s not uncommon for movies to feature characters yawning. Here are a few famous yawns in movies:

  1. The Godfather (1972) – In the opening scene of this iconic movie, the character of Bonasera yawns during his conversation with Vito Corleone.

  2. The Shawshank Redemption (1994) – In one scene, Red (played by Morgan Freeman) yawns during a group therapy session at the prison.

  3. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) – In a scene where the hobbits are preparing to leave the Shire, Frodo (played by Elijah Wood) lets out a big yawn as he stretches.

  4. Forrest Gump (1994) – In one scene, Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks) yawns during a conversation with Lt. Dan (played by Gary Sinise).

  5. The Matrix (1999) – In a scene where Neo (played by Keanu Reeves) meets Morpheus (played by Laurence Fishburne), Neo yawns as he tries to stay awake during Morpheus’ explanation of the Matrix.

These are just a few examples, but there are countless other movies where characters yawn throughout the film.

The Most Recognized Yawn in the World?

There is one particular yawn that has gained some notoriety in popular culture, and that is the “lion yawn” – a deep, wide-open mouthed yawn often seen in lions and other big cats. This yawn is often accompanied by a roar, and has been featured in numerous documentaries and nature programs, as well as in artwork and popular culture. The lion yawn has become something of a symbol of strength and power, and is often associated with the majestic and awe-inspiring qualities of big cats.

The MGM lion, not a cat, is a well-known symbol that appears at the beginning of many movies produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studios. The lion yawns during the logo sequence, which has become an iconic moment in movie history. While there have been several lions used as the MGM mascot over the years, the most famous is likely the one that appeared in the logo from 1957 to 1960 – a lion named “Telly” who was known for his distinctive roar and majestic appearance. Telly’s yawn in the MGM logo has become a well-known and beloved movie moment, and has been parodied and referenced in various films and TV shows over the years.

Why Do Dogs Yawn?

There are several reasons why dogs yawn, and it’s not always as simple as us being tired or bored! Here are some of the most common explanations:

Physiological reasons:

  • Alertness: Similar to humans, dogs sometimes yawn when transitioning from one state to another, like waking up or becoming more alert. This could be a way to increase oxygen intake and cool down the brain.
  • Boredom: If your dog seems uninterested in their surroundings or doesn’t have much stimulation, yawning could be a sign of boredom.

Emotional and social reasons:

  • Stress: This is a big one! Dogs often yawn when feeling anxious, nervous, or uncomfortable. For example, they might yawn during a vet visit, when meeting a new dog, or during a loud argument. It’s a way to self-soothe and de-escalate the situation.
  • Empathy: Believe it or not, dogs might be picking up on your emotions! Studies have shown that dogs can “catch” yawns from their owners, just like humans. This suggests they might have some level of empathy and understand your emotional state.
  • Calming signal: Similar to other calming signals like licking their lips or looking away, yawning can be a way for dogs to communicate they feel unsure or want to avoid conflict.

Understanding the context is key:

To truly understand why your dog is yawning, pay attention to the situation and their overall body language. Is their tail wagging or tucked? Are their ears perked up or flat? Are they making eye contact or looking away? By considering these factors, you can better decipher the meaning behind their yawns.

There’s a good chance your dog will yawn if you yawn, but it’s not guaranteed. Here’s what we know about contagious yawning in dogs:

Evidence suggests:

  • Dogs can catch yawns from their owners and other familiar humans. Studies have shown this “contagious yawning” phenomenon occurs more frequently than chance.
  • Dogs are more likely to yawn after seeing their owners yawn than strangers, suggesting an emotional connection plays a role.
  • The yawn contagion strength might be linked to the dog-human bond, with stronger bonds leading to more frequent yawning responses.

However, it’s not always a given:

  • Not all dogs are equally susceptible to contagious yawning. Individual differences in personality, age, and even breed might influence their response.
  • The context matters. If your dog is stressed, distracted, or engaged in another activity, they might not pay attention to your yawn or have the mental capacity to “catch” it.
  • Yawning in dogs can have other explanations besides empathy. Boredom, tiredness, or physiological needs can also trigger yawns.

So, will your dog yawn if you yawn? It depends! Observing their overall behavior and the situation can give you clues. A yawn after you yawn, especially if directed at you, might indicate empathy and a strong bond. But remember, other factors could be at play too.

Psychopaths and Yawning

Research suggests that individuals with high levels of psychopathic traits are less likely to yawn contagiously compared to individuals with lower levels of these traits. Here’s what we know:

Studies have shown:

  • A negative correlation between scores on psychopathy measures and susceptibility to contagious yawning.
  • This means the higher someone scores on a psychopathy scale, the less likely they are to yawn in response to seeing someone else yawn.
  • This effect appears to be unrelated to factors like direct eye contact but may be linked to lower levels of empathy.

However, it’s important to remember:

  • These studies suggest a correlation, not causation. Just because someone scores high on a psychopathy scale, it doesn’t definitively mean they won’t yawn contagiously.
  • Psychopathy is a complex spectrum, and individuals with these traits can vary greatly in their expression. Yawning behavior may just be one piece of the puzzle.
  • More research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind the link between psychopathy and contagious yawning.

Yawning and Empathy

The link between yawning and empathy is a fascinating but complex topic with research suggesting there might be a connection, but not definitively proving it. Here’s what we know:

Evidence Suggesting a Link:

  • Contagious yawning: People often yawn after seeing others yawn, especially those they are close to or empathize with. This suggests a possible link between understanding another’s state and mimicking their behavior.
  • Empathy levels and contagious yawning: Some studies have found a correlation between higher levels of empathy and increased susceptibility to contagious yawning.
  • Brain regions involved: Both yawning and empathy involve similar brain regions, suggesting a potential shared neural basis.

Challenges and Counter-Evidence:

  • Alternative explanations: Yawning can serve other functions like increasing alertness or regulating brain temperature, which could explain contagious yawning without involving empathy.
  • Inconsistent findings: Not all studies have found a clear link between empathy and contagious yawning. Some populations with lower empathy, like individuals with autism spectrum disorder, still show contagious yawning.
  • Individual differences: People vary in their susceptibility to contagious yawning, possibly due to factors like personality, attention, and social context.

Current Understanding:

The research suggests a possible link between yawning and empathy, but it’s not conclusive. Contagious yawning may involve more than just empathy, and individual differences play a significant role. Further research is needed to fully understand the complex relationship between these two phenomena.

Here are some additional points to consider:

  • While some studies show a link between empathy and contagious yawning, this doesn’t necessarily mean someone who yawns contagiously is high in empathy, or vice versa.
  • Contagious yawning might be more about understanding another’s state in general, not necessarily feeling their emotions.
  • The link between yawning and empathy could be influenced by social factors like familiarity and bonding.

Autism and Yawning

Both autism and schizophrenia seem to affect yawning in different ways, though the research is still ongoing and evolving. Here’s what we know:

Autism:

  • Reduced susceptibility to contagious yawning: Studies suggest individuals with autism are less likely to yawn when they see others yawn compared to neurotypical individuals. This might be related to differences in empathy, attention, or social processing.
  • Normal spontaneous yawning: However, people with autism still yawn on their own, indicating yawning serves other functions beyond empathy.
  • Individual differences: The degree of reduced susceptibility varies across the autism spectrum, with some individuals exhibiting contagious yawning similar to neurotypical people.

Schizophrenia:

  • Mixed findings: Some studies suggest individuals with schizophrenia show reduced contagious yawning, while others haven’t found significant differences. The reasons for these inconsistencies are unclear and require further investigation.
  • Possible explanations: Reduced susceptibility could be linked to altered social cognition, attention issues, or specific symptoms like blunted affect.
  • Need for more research: More studies are needed to understand the link between schizophrenia and yawning definitively.

Important Notes:

  • Yawning is complex and influenced by various factors beyond empathy.
  • These findings on autism and schizophrenia represent average group trends and do not apply to every individual within these spectrum disorders.
  • It’s crucial to avoid generalizations and stereotypes based on yawning behavior alone.

Here are some additional resources:

When to See a Doctor About Yawning

Yawning itself is a normal reflex and not necessarily a cause for concern. However, there are some situations where excessive yawning might warrant a conversation with your doctor. Here’s a breakdown:

When Yawning Might Be Normal:

  • Occasional Yawning: Yawning a few times throughout the day due to fatigue, boredom, or even lightheadedness is usually nothing to worry about.
  • Sudden Yawning: If you experience a sudden urge to yawn after seeing or hearing someone else yawn, this is likely contagious yawning, a normal social response.
  • Stress Yawning: Yawning can also be a way to manage stress or anxiety. If it happens occasionally and resolves when the stress passes, it’s not a major concern.

When to Talk to Your Doctor:

  • Excessive Yawning: If you’re yawning frequently and excessively, especially with no clear explanation, it could be a sign of an underlying medical condition.
  • Sudden Increase in Yawning: If you notice a sudden and dramatic increase in your yawning, especially if it’s accompanied by other symptoms like fatigue, daytime sleepiness, or difficulty concentrating, consult your doctor.
  • Yawning Along with Other Symptoms: If your yawning is accompanied by other concerning symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, or numbness, seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a serious condition.
  • Persistent Yawning After Addressing Common Causes: If you’ve addressed common causes like sleep deprivation, medication side effects, or stress but still experience excessive yawning, it’s best to talk to your doctor.

It’s important to remember:

  • This information is not a substitute for professional medical advice. If you’re concerned about your yawning, schedule an appointment with your doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • They can help determine the cause of your excessive yawning and recommend appropriate interventions, whether it’s addressing sleep issues, adjusting medications, or investigating potential underlying health conditions.

Potential Causes of Excessive Yawning

here is a table of potential causes of excessive yawning:

CategoryCauses
Sleep disordersSleep apnea, Insomnia, Restless legs syndrome, Narcolepsy
Medical conditionsAnemia, Thyroid problems, Heart failure, Liver disease, Lung disease, Brain tumors
MedicationsAntidepressants, Antihistamines, Muscle relaxants, Sedatives, Blood pressure medications
Lifestyle factorsStress, Boredom, Lack of exercise, Dehydration, Caffeine intake, Alcohol consumption
OtherPregnancy, Vitamin deficiencies, Head injury

Yawning and Temperature

While the relationship between yawning and temperature is interesting, it’s not as straightforward as a clear-cut correlation. Here’s what we know:

Evidence for a link:

  • Studies on animals: Several studies suggest that some animals, like rats and parakeets, yawned more frequently at higher ambient temperatures.
  • Brain cooling theory: One theory proposes that yawning functions to increase blood flow to the head, potentially helping to cool down the brain, which might explain increased yawning in warmer environments.
  • Anecdotal observations: Many people report yawning more often when feeling hot or stuffy.

Challenges and counter-evidence:

  • Limited human studies: Studies on humans haven’t shown a consistent or strong correlation between temperature and yawning frequency.
  • Other factors influence yawning: Fatigue, boredom, and social cues can also trigger yawns, making it difficult to isolate the effect of temperature alone.
  • Yawning at high temperatures: Some studies suggest yawning actually decreases at extremely high temperatures, possibly due to competing physiological priorities.

Current understanding:

The link between yawning and temperature remains unclear and complex. While some evidence suggests a connection, particularly in animals and specific temperature ranges, it’s likely not the only factor influencing yawning behavior. More research is needed to fully understand this potential connection in humans.

Other Theories About Why We Yawn

Beyond the most frequently discussed theories like drowsiness, alertness, and empathy, several other interesting ideas try to explain why we yawn. Here’s a glimpse into some less mainstream theories:

1. Cooling the Brain: This theory suggests yawning increases blood flow to the head, bringing cooler blood from the body and flushing away metabolic heat buildup in the brain. This could explain yawning’s occurrence during mental exertion or boredom, where brain activity might increase heat production.

2. Ear Pressure Regulation: Studies show yawning can affect the middle ear, equalizing pressure and potentially relieving discomfort during rapid altitude changes or ear infections. While the exact mechanism is unclear, it suggests a possible “yawning for ear health” function.

3. Non-Verbal Communication: Some researchers propose yawning plays a role in social communication. It could signal tiredness, boredom, or a desire for group synchronization. Yawning contagiously might promote cohesion and empathy within a group.

4. Stretch and Stretch Reflex: Yawning involves stretching facial and jaw muscles, similar to other stretching behaviors. This could enhance alertness and muscle readiness, especially after periods of inactivity. The yawn itself might be a stretch reflex triggered by internal cues.

5. Attention and Information Processing: Some studies suggest yawning is linked to cognitive processes like filtering out irrelevant information and focusing on essential stimuli. It could be a way to clear the mind and prepare for renewed attention, explaining yawning during lectures or tedious tasks.

6. Evolutionary Advantage: Some theories propose yawning served an evolutionary purpose, like warning others of danger or signaling group cohesion. While the specific function remains debatable, this perspective suggests yawning might have deeper roots in our social and survival instincts.

It’s important to remember:

  • These theories are still under investigation, and none definitively explain why we yawn.
  • Each theory might contribute a piece to the puzzle, and multiple factors likely combine to trigger yawns in different situations.
  • Further research is needed to fully understand the complex function and evolution of yawning.

Frequently Asked Questions About Why We Yawn (2026): Truth Behind a Common Behavior

Why do humans yawn?

Humans yawn for several reasons, including regulating brain temperature, increasing oxygen intake, and as a form of social bonding. Yawning helps cool the brain by inhaling cold air and can also boost oxygen levels, enhancing alertness. Contagious yawning is thought to be an empathy-driven social response observed across many species.

Is yawning contagious, and if so, why?

Yes, yawning is contagious, and it is largely attributed to empathy and social bonding. Observing someone else yawn often triggers a similar response in others, a phenomenon seen in humans, primates, and even dogs. This suggests a deeper biological connection that goes beyond just fatigue.

How does yawning benefit the body?

Yawning benefits the body by potentially regulating brain temperature and increasing oxygen intake. The deep inhalation of a yawn can help lower brain temperature, while the influx of air can raise blood oxygen levels, potentially improving alertness and shaking off drowsiness. These physiological effects contribute to a sense of refreshment.

What is the origin of the word 'yawn'?

The word "yawn" originates from the Old English word "gionian," which means "to open the mouth wide." This term has roots in Old Norse, where "gina" held a similar meaning. Since the 14th century, it has been used in English to describe this involuntary act, often associated with tiredness or boredom.

Does yawning serve different purposes in animals compared to humans?

Yes, yawning can serve different purposes in animals compared to humans, although some overlap exists. While humans yawn to regulate temperature and for social bonding, dogs might yawn to relieve stress, and primates use it as a social signal. Further research is needed to fully understand the diverse contexts and meanings of yawning across various species.

Are there any gender differences in how often people yawn?

Studies on gender differences in yawning show mixed results, with some indicating women might yawn slightly more often than men, while others find no significant disparity. Factors like individual activity levels, time of day, and environmental conditions likely play a more influential role than gender in determining yawning frequency. You might even find yourself yawning after a long day of mattress testing at a place like the Yawnder San Diego showroom.

Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

Rated 4.4 out of 5

The Helix Twilight mattress is designed to provide excellent motion isolation, which means it can effectively absorb and reduce the transfer of motion between sleeping partners. This is achieved through the use of several layers of foam, including memory foam and high-density foam, which work together to dampen vibrations and prevent them from spreading across the surface of the mattress.

Overall, customer reviews of the Helix Twilight mattress generally confirm that it provides good motion isolation, with many users reporting that they were able to sleep undisturbed even when their partner moved around or got out of bed during the night. However, it’s worth noting that the degree of motion isolation can vary depending on factors such as the weight of the sleepers, their sleeping positions, and the intensity of their movements.

Pressure Relief

Rated 4.4 out of 5

The Helix Twilight mattress is designed to provide pressure relief, which is important for ensuring that your body is properly supported and that you can sleep comfortably throughout the night.

The mattress features several layers of foam that are specifically designed to contour to your body and provide targeted pressure relief to key areas such as your shoulders, hips, and lower back. The top layer of the mattress is made from Helix’s proprietary memory foam, which is designed to conform to your body’s shape and provide cushioning where you need it most.

Overall, customer reviews of the Helix Twilight mattress suggest that it does provide good pressure relief, with many users reporting that they experienced reduced pain and stiffness in their joints and muscles after switching to the mattress. However, as with any mattress, the level of pressure relief you experience will depend on your body weight, sleeping position, and individual preferences, so it’s important to choose a mattress that works well for your specific needs.

Temperature Control

Rated 4.4 out of 5

The Helix Twilight mattress is designed to be temperature-neutral, which means it is not supposed to sleep particularly hot or cold. The mattress is constructed with several layers of foam, including a top layer of memory foam, which can sometimes trap heat and cause the mattress to feel warmer than other types of mattresses.

However, Helix has addressed this potential issue by using a special type of memory foam that is infused with a gel material. This gel helps to dissipate heat and prevent the mattress from retaining too much warmth, which can be particularly beneficial for people who tend to sleep hot.

Overall, customer reviews of the Helix Twilight mattress suggest that it does not sleep particularly hot, with many users reporting that they were able to stay comfortable throughout the night without feeling too warm or sweaty. However, as with any mattress, individual experiences may vary depending on factors such as personal preference, the climate of your bedroom, and your sleeping habits.

When properly sized to your bed frame and bedding, it should provide ample space for you to sleep without worrying about falling off the edge.

The Helix Twilight mattress also features a reinforced perimeter support, which helps to provide a stable and consistent sleeping surface across the entire mattress. This means that you can sleep comfortably and securely even if you tend to move around a lot during the night.

Of course, if you have concerns about falling off the mattress, it’s always a good idea to make sure you choose the appropriate size for your needs and to use appropriate safety measures such as bed rails if necessary.

Ease of Movement

Rated 4.4 out of 5

While the Helix Twilight mattress does not have the same level of bounce as a traditional innerspring mattress, it may still have some degree of responsiveness and springiness due to its foam construction. However, this should not be so much that it disrupts your sleep or causes excessive motion transfer.

Overall, customer reviews of the Helix Twilight mattress suggest that it provides a comfortable and supportive sleeping surface without excessive bounce.

Sex

Off-Gassing

Rated 4.4 out of 5

Like most mattresses that contain foam, the Molecule Hybrid mattress may emit a slight odor when it is first unpacked. This odor, commonly referred to as “off-gassing,” is the result of the chemicals used in the manufacturing process and is not unique to the Molecule Hybrid mattress.

However, the Molecule Hybrid mattress is CertiPUR-US certified, which means that it meets rigorous standards for content, emissions, and durability. The certification ensures that the mattress is made without harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, phthalates, ozone depleters, and flame retardants, which can be harmful to health and the environment.

Most customers report that any odor from the Molecule Hybrid mattress dissipates within a few days, especially if the room is well-ventilated. To speed up the process, it is recommended to remove any plastic wrapping and allow the mattress to air out for a few hours before using it. If you are particularly sensitive to odors or chemicals, it may be helpful to choose a mattress with a lower odor profile, such as a latex or organic mattress.

Reflex Pillow: A Side Sleeper’s Dream

The Reflex Pillow was specifically designed to relieve and eradicate the neck pain and back pain that is usually a result of inadequate support during sleep. But even more, the Reflex Pillow is best suited for side sleepers.

reflex pillow unbox

Sleeping on your side, for those that do, just feels natural. It’s even how we prepared ourselves for the real world while still in the womb. There is a certain comfort to it that is difficult to shake, and even more difficult to shop for. So many pillow manufacturing companies try to create products that are a one-size-fits-all but this rarely works.

Overview of the Reflex Pillow

reflex pillow overview

Noel O’Conner, the Irish inventor behind the Reflex Pillow, is a specialist in the treatment of back and neck pain since 1987.

After having to both see and treat countless patients, he was motivated to create a pillow that could alleviate so many of the issues that come from poor sleep such as neck pain, spinal alignment, sleep apnoea, snoring, insomnia and even teeth grinding.

  • Most ideal for side sleepers
  • Created in Ireland
  • Reflex foam is 50% softer than memory foam
  • An expensive pillow no doubt but with the quality to match
  • Item must be purchased directly through the Reflex Pillow website
  • Shipping is $30 (since it’s coming to you from Ireland)
  • They have a 14-day return policy

The Reflex Pillow is fully patented and trademarked. It is also an approved medical device and CE certified.

CE marking is a certification mark that indicates conformity with health, safety, and environmental protection standards for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA)The Reflex Pillow retails for €79.00 which comes out to be roughly $97.53. Being that it’s being shipped to you directly from Ireland, shipping on top of that is €25.00 which is roughly $30.87. The pillow can only be purchased directly through their site.

Construction of the Reflex Pillow

The Reflex Pillow is 610mm long x 412mm wide x 110mm high. In inches that means it’s  24” long x 16.22” wide x 4.33” high. It has a flat bottom base along with a shaped top surface. It weighs 2 kg which is about 4.4 lbs. It’s suitable for all standard pillow cases.

It’s specially formulated with a non toxic foam material, also known as Reflex Foam, which was specifically created to be used in this product. Reflex Foam is 50% softer than memory foam.

My Reflex Pillow Findings

I really consider the Reflex Pillow to be a substantial and high quality product. Given it’s price that’s precisely what it should be and that’s exactly what it is. While it isn’t said to be for side sleepers only, this is the impression that I was given when reading this:

reflex pillow directions

The Reflex Pillow is constructed with some amazing contouring. It’s a pillow that finally pays mind to the all of the details of the body when considering the head, neck and shoulders. There is an anti-headroll ridge in the center, there are 2 head dips, as seen in the image above, and then there is a neck support and shoulder slot. And let me tell you, that shoulder slot is heavenly.

In in the information guide that came with the pillow, there is no indication of how to sleep on the Reflex Pillow if you were sleeping on your back because I don’t believe it was designed for that. If it were, why else have the ridge in the center?

I am usually reluctant when it comes to foam pillows but this one is really different because it’s not created with memory foam. In fact Reflex Foam is 50% softer than memory foam. Reflex foam is soft, comfortable, pleasant but also supportive. When laying on it for the first time I could tell that it still provides adequate support for the neck and shoulder. Overall it gives stability without feeling stiff.

My Reflex Pillow Recommendation

One of the first things that stood out to me about the product was the passion involved in creating it. Noel O’Conner, a back and neck pain specialist, put himself out there on crowdfunding websites like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo to fuel his dream and create a product that would be effective in helping people overcome their neck pain and spinal alignment issues. He ended up raising twice the amount of his original goal, which gave me the awesome opportunity to try it.

reflex pillow kickstarter

The pillow is costly, there’s no doubt about that but you pay a high price for high quality goods, that’s just the reality. I also actually like that you have to purchase it from their website directly. It says a lot about how important it is to the company to handle their own product and their own customer service. For people who are truly suffering with pain from sleeping or pain overall, that can easily worsen with poor pillow support, the Reflex Pillow is absolutely worth the investment. I’ve slept on it only for 1 night so far but can’t express just how impressed I am with it. It looks and feels like a high quality product in every way. Reflex Pillow’s 14-day money back guarantee is also comforting.

My Recore Mattress Findings

Starting from the top, the stretch knit cover provides for maximum contouring and breathability. It also has a zipper so you can remove and wash it.

zippered coverThe Recore has just the right amount of sink to it so that it’s truly versatile enough for any sleeping postion. It’s also easy to switch positions at night given the top layer of foam is very responsive.

Here’s a look a how much my 14lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress.

Here’s another view to show you sinkage and how much edge support you can expect.

This mattress has a zippered cover which is common for roll packed mattresses but it is positioned so that you don’t have to lift up the mattress to access it. This makes it much easier to remove and wash if you need to. Although, I strongly recommend a mattress protector.

In the video below I show you how much motion transfer to expect on the mattress. As you can see the other bowling ball hardly moves but the one that I dropped actually has some bounce which is rare for a foam mattress.

When you unzip the cover you will see that the top layer of foam has some holes in it which provides more breathability and air flow.

Here’s a closer look without the fire sock on

Here’s a side view of the layering. The middle layer is the cooling gel layer followed by the base support foam.

Here’s a video showing how each layer reacts. The graphite latex top layer is the most responsive and the layer of cooling gel foam below it provides great pressure relief. The base layer is standard and provides a stable surface.

My Recore Bed Recommendation

The Recore mattress is a perfect choice for someone new to memory foam. You get all the pressure relieving benefits of foam but without the drawbacks of sleeping hot. Without springs you don’t have to worry about motion transfer either. With this mattress, there’s really no reason you would need or want springs.

I highly recommend this mattress to couples that have different sleep positions and have problems with partner disturbance at night. The Recore will certainly solve that problem. If it’s been a while since you have been in the market for a new mattress, you will be pleasantly suprised at how far foam technology has come and you get it all in the Recore.

The Recore mattress is priced as follows:

  • Twin/Twin XL: $749
  • Full: $899
  • Queen: $999
  • King: $1,199
  • California King: $1,299

Trial:

The Recore mattress comes with a 120-night trial. If you are not satisfied with your mattress for any reason, you can return it for a full refund minus shipping costs.

Warranty:

The Recore mattress is backed by a 15-year warranty. This warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, including indentations over 1 inch (2 inches with commercial or institutional use) for the first 10 years of the warranty period and 2 inches (3 inches with commercial or institutional use) for the final 5 years of the warranty window.

To file a warranty claim, you will need to contact Recore customer service and provide photos of the defect. If your claim is approved, Recore will repair or replace your mattress at no additional cost.

Please note that the warranty does not cover damage caused by misuse, abuse, or normal wear and tear.

These sheets were created in New York City and are milled in Austria. Eucalypso donations a portion of their proceeds to the Nature Conservancy. As I mentioned in the video, Tencel is made in a closed loop process. Basically, 98% of the chemical used to dissolve the wood pulp and make the fiber, N-methylmorpholine N-oxide, can be reused so it is a relatively eco-friendly process.

How do these sheets feel? A quality Tencel fabric such as Eucalypso will have a silky feel and is light and airy. Here’s a picture of the sheet right out of the box. Notice how it shines.

Purple Cloud Pillow by Purple

Purple is known for it’s strange and innovative products so when they decided to release a more traditional type of pillow, I wasn’t sure what to think. This pillow doesn’t claim to be everything that it’s not. It’s customizable, yes, that’s true but not in a way that would bore you and while it is a more traditional take on the pillow, it doesn’t claim to be yet another down-alternative pillow, because it isn’t and it doesn’t feel like one. It doesn’t have to.

Overview of the Purple Cloud Pillow

Purple’s take on a more “Traditional Type” of pillow isn’t exactly traditional, which is why for Purple, it works. They don’t DO ordinary so there had to be something to this pillow that is uncommon. While it is a customizable or adjustable pillow, their approach is different when compared to how others in the industry choose to execute this type of product. Most adjustable pillows mean you pull a zipper to take out or put stuffing in. In Purple’s case, no amount of fill ever leaves the pillow. Instead, the firmness can be changed by pulling two zippers either open or closed. When both zippers are closed, the pillow has a firmer feel. When they are open, it has a softer feel.

For those who aren’t entirely convinced, the pillow comes with a 100-Night Trial and for those who choose to commit, it also comes with a 1-Year Limited Warranty.

It retails for $49 on their site and considering the brand and the feature of customization, it’s a really fair price. They could have asked for more, given the overall company reputation, but it’s nice they stayed within the realm of more-or-less middle class affordability.

Construction of the Purple Cloud Pillow

The Purple Cloud Pillow is composed of “interlocking denier poly fiber puff balls.” Don’t let the vocabulary sway you though. This is just Purple being unique and poetic with their wording. This is the industry standard pillow fill used in most non-down pillows that aren’t made of foam. Then again, I’m not an engineer and this poly fiber might be more special and specific to the pillow’s function than I’m aware of.

The cover is made of 60% Lyocell and 40% Nylon. It’s designed to be thermoregulating and moisture-wicking. It comes in only one size of 26” X 18” and while this was fine for me, it might not do the trick for larger people, as it is kind of standard. Too standard for Purple standards. It weighs 3.6 lbs and while that already sounds like too much, it’s actually crazy light. Light and fluffy like a cloud. I’ve tested quite a few pillows and this one is among those that weighed the least.

My Purple Plush Pillow Findings

I was absolutely stunned to find that the pillow isn’t just a gimmick. It seems too good to be true: a pillow whose loft is adjustable without needing to remove or add any filling. But how can that be? The best way I can explain the function of this pillow is to compare it to a closed bag filled with air.

The more air it has inside, the more compressed it’ll be so the firmer the bag will feel overall. The less air it has inside, the less compressed it’ll be so the softer the bag will feel if you were to lay or press on it. Despite the fact that this is a pretty simple concept that would make sense to most people, when it came to the application of it in the actual pillow itself, I was surprised the airflow, which is regulated by the opening or closing of zippers, made a difference in how the pillow felt. Structurally, it makes sense it would work but we’re not talking about a closed plastic bag filled with air, we’re talking about a pillow, something that requires airflow. I guess that’s where the engineers come in. So does it make a difference? Yes. Opening the zippers did in fact make it softer and closing them did make it firmer.

As for the other elements of the pillow and product overall, I give it an A+ all around. The packaging was discreet at the door but loud upon opening. I appreciate the branding effort Purple puts into their products (the bold color, the large font typeface, etc) and customer experience overall. The pillow cover material is lovely. It has a bright white color, a luxurious sheen and a soft pleasant touch. The zippers are premium quality, not something one has to fear will break easily.

I found it to be more supportive than a down pillow and more firmer than one too. For someone who needs solid neck support, I’m not 100% this will be enough but then again, I have more neck and shoulder spasms than anyone I know so I can’t deny that my disposition calls for some extra TLC.

As a side note, the pillow is FULLY washable which is a really nice feature.

My Purple Cloud Pillow Recommendation

After having slept on the Purple Plush Pillow for about a week now, I have to say that I like it quite a lot. The ability to customize the loft by way of pulling two zippers is pretty incredible for someone who has changing needs or if it’s meant to serve as a gift. I like a softer feeling pillow and this one suits me just fine. The only thing I’m uncertain of is it’s thermoregulation. I have slept hot a few nights in a row with this pillow so I’m not sure what to make of it. Unfortunately when it comes to that, that’s something in which results do vary but I do like the pillow and I’m not looking to give it away anytime soon.

It also comes with a 120 night trial with free delivery and returns taking away all the pain points of purchasing a mattress.

Overview of the Logan and Cove Mattress

Below is a video overview of the Logan & Cove. You’ll notice that it has an actual pillow top. I haven’t seen many of these that come in a box let alone one that sells in Canada.

Logan and Cove is a Canadian company and they made an intentional decision to only sell to Canadian residents. This mattress is also made in Canada.

Construction of the Logan and Cove Mattress

Below are the construction specifications of the Logan and Cove according to their website.

A – Eucalyptus-derived Fiber Top Cover
Silky smooth and wicks moisture away

B – Silk Blend Pillow-Top Fill
Temperature regulating and breathable

C – 1” Cooling Gel Foam
Dissipates heat while it cradles your body

D – 1” Contouring Eco Foam
E – 2” Supportive Eco Foam

Cushioned contouring support

F – Individually Pocketed Coils
Adaptive, responsive, motion isolating support

My Logan and Cove Findings

In terms of firmness, the Logan and Cove is slightly on the firmer end of the spectrum. Even though it has a pillow top, you won’t sink into this mattress too much.

Here’s a picture of my 14 lb. bowling ball on the mattress. As you can see there’s not too much sink. This makes the mattress easy to move around on. The pillow top also has a quick recovery so you won’t get that stuck feeling.

Logan and Cove Sink

In terms of motion transfer, the Logan and Cove is designed with a pocket coil spring system. These springs act independently which isolate motion. The added pillow top will also help isolate motion

Here’s a video to illustrate the point.

Does the Logan and Cove Sleep Hot? You would think with a pillow top you can expect more heat retention. But that’s not the case with this mattress. It could be the eucalyptus fiber derived cover and the silk blend fill in the pillow top that help but I think it’s the fact that the pillow top isn’t too thick. Some pillow tops can be 3-4 inches thick which makes you really sink in and get surrounded. With this mattress you won’t feel the pillow top surrounding you too much.

Here’s a video that illustrates heat retention on this mattress. For context, it seems to behave similarly to many of the spring hybrid mattresses I have reviewed. Coil systems just breathe more than an all foam bed which helps tremendously.

My Logan and Cove Recommendation

There are plenty of all foam online mattress brands out there but this is the only Canadian brand that I have found that ships to Canada, comes delivered conveniently in a box and gives you a true pillow top feel. I recommend the Logan and Cove for sleepers looking for a traditional mattress feel that is just slightly on the firmer end of the spectrum. Hot sleepers will also enjoy this mattress.

Frequently Asked Questions About Logan and Cove: Exclusive Comfort at an Incredible Value

Is the Logan and Cove mattress worth the price?

Yes, the Logan and Cove mattress offers excellent comfort and support at an attractive price point of $999 for a queen size. This Canadian-made hybrid mattress combines foam and coils, providing a unique blend of benefits that justify its cost. Yawnder's assessment highlights its thoughtful construction and durable materials, making it a strong value proposition.

Who is the Logan and Cove mattress best for?

The Logan and Cove mattress is best for a wide range of sleepers who prefer a medium-firm feel and appreciate a blend of foam and coil benefits. Its design, with a plush pillow top that prevents excessive sinking, accommodates various sleep positions. Our experience at Yawnder suggests it's particularly suitable for those seeking pressure relief and good temperature regulation.

How does the Logan and Cove compare to other hybrid mattresses?

The Logan and Cove distinguishes itself from other hybrid mattresses with its five-layer construction and attention to cooling features. Its eucalyptus fiber cover, cooling gel foam, and individually pocketed coils are designed to mitigate heat retention, a common concern with some hybrids. This focus on breathability, combined with motion isolation, positions it as a competitive option in the hybrid market.

What are the downsides of the Logan and Cove mattress?

The primary potential downside of the Logan and Cove mattress is its leaning towards a firm feel, which might not be ideal for those who prefer a very soft sleeping surface. While the pillow top adds plushness, it still maintains a supportive firmness. Shoppers seeking an extremely soft mattress might need to consider other options.

Is the Logan and Cove mattress good for hot sleepers?

Yes, the Logan and Cove mattress is well-suited for hot sleepers due to its strategic cooling features. The eucalyptus-derived fiber top cover wicks moisture, and the 1-inch cooling gel foam actively dissipates heat. Additionally, the open coil system promotes better airflow, helping to maintain a balanced temperature throughout the night.

Where can I try the Logan and Cove mattress in person?

While the Logan and Cove mattress offers a generous 365-night trial, Yawnder's showroom in Encinitas, CA, provides an opportunity to experience various mattress types and discuss your sleep needs in person. Though the article doesn't explicitly state Logan and Cove is on display, visiting a physical location can help you understand what mattress characteristics you prefer before committing to an online purchase or trial.

Bottom line

The BlanQuil Weighted Blanket offers calming pressure through microbead filling, aiming to improve sleep quality for adults. It is best for individuals seeking stress relief, but those with specific medical conditions should consult a doctor. The luxurious construction and versatile cover are highlights, though the smaller size might not suit all users.

What is a BlanQuil blanket?

A BlanQuil blanket is a type of weighted blanket that is made with a special type of filling called microbeads. Microbeads are small, lightweight, and very dense, which makes them ideal for use in weighted blankets. BlanQuil blankets are also designed to be breathable and moisture-wicking, making them comfortable to use in all seasons.

Negatives of weighted blankets

While weighted blankets have many potential benefits, there are also some negatives that should be considered before using them:

  • Not suitable for everyone. Weighted blankets are not recommended for people with certain medical conditions, such as sleep apnea, asthma, claustrophobia, or circulatory problems. They are also not recommended for children under the age of 3.
  • Can be uncomfortable. Some people find weighted blankets to be too heavy or uncomfortable to use. This is especially true if you are not used to sleeping with a heavy blanket.
  • Can be expensive. Weighted blankets can be more expensive than traditional blankets.

Do doctors recommend weighted blankets?

Some doctors do recommend weighted blankets for people with certain conditions, such as anxiety and insomnia. However, it is important to talk to your doctor before using a weighted blanket, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions.

Do weighted blankets actually work?

There is some scientific evidence to suggest that weighted blankets can be effective for improving sleep quality and reducing anxiety. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings.

Overall, weighted blankets can be a safe and effective way to improve sleep quality and reduce anxiety for some people. However, it is important to talk to your doctor before using a weighted blanket, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions.

Overview of The Blanquil Blanket

The Blanquil Quilted Weighted Blanket is designed to maximize your sleep and make you feel at ease. Weighted blankets are known to offer a snug experience similar to that of a hug. This light pressure is known to relieve stress and anxiety and promote deeper sleep.

It’s offered in 15lbs and 20lbs and a simple calculation will help you decipher which is most suitable for you based on your body weight.

For adults between 100 – 140lb it is suggested to get the 15lb and for anything more, they suggest the 20lb blanket. The calculation goes that the blanket should be approximately 10% of your body weight.

No matter the weight, the blanket is priced at $169.00. They do however offer discounts to Military Service members and First Responders for their efforts and sacrifices they made for the country.

Blanquil has a 60-day return policy and offers a 5-year warranty. and the item must be returned with the original packaging and no damages. Despite this generous return period, Blanquil will not cover the cost of shipping.

 Construction of The Blanquil Blanket

The Blanquil Quilted Weighted Blanket has a removable cover so that you can stay cool in summer but also stay warm in the winter. Both portions of the blanket are machine washable.

blanquil weighted blanket rolled up

The Cover is made up of Ultra Plus Micro Fiber: Outer 100% Polyester Velvet, Lining 100% Polyester, Fill 100% Polyester Batting.

The inner blanket is made up of 100% cotton and the filling is made of Glass Pellets that are Eco-Friendly.

The blanket is available in some awesome colors: Grey, Taupe, Charcoal, Navy, Pearl and Lilac.

Its dimensions are 48” X 74” as it’s designed to be suitable for one person only. Should a couple want to share, they’d need two separate blankets to be able to do so.

Blanquil Blanket Findings

I noticed that when weighted blankets first came onto the scene that people were paying a premium. While the premium cost still tends to apply most of the time, there are other options out there but remember that more often that not that you get what you pay for. Sometimes it’s worth going for what seems like the more “extravagant” item, knowing that it’s made well and that it’ll stay intact. Sure, maybe you can find an item for a fraction of the price but can you imagine all of those pebbles inside the blanket coming undone? I don’t even want to picture it. I suggest working with a company that stands by its quality and that also is willing to replace any defective items. For those offering wholesale rates, they may not be able to make the same promise.

blanquil blanket removable outer cover

The Blanquil blanket is different from the first weighted blanket I’ve ever tried. For one, it looked MUCH nicer. It wasn’t just a bare weighted blanket. It had a lovely outer cover and it was great for the colder months. While traditionally velvet is made from silk, there are synthetic alternatives, like polyester velvet and that’s exactly the velvet we’re dealing with here when it comes to the exterior layer. The warm velvet cover that it came packaged in was definitely a nice touch. In terms of the consumers experience with the item, the quality of the texture initially leaves us with a very positive first impression.

Despite my initial impression however, there was one thing curios about it: it’s size. It’s smaller than the first weighted blanket I’ve tried. Much smaller. On Blanquil’s website, the blanket comes in different variations when it comes to color, fabric type, texture and weight but it all comes in the same dimensions.

blanquil weighted blanket duvet loops

If you’re looking for a weighted blanket for someone who is petite, either short or light in weight, or a teenager, this might be the best buy. It could also be a great item for those who have experience with weighted blankets but prefer a smaller one, either because they are one or both of the types of individuals I described above. Then there is another possibility: some prefer to only cover a certain part of their body with a weighted blanket.

For example, I don’t like my entire body being covered but that’s a personal preference. You might feel differently. Due to being prone to anxiety, I already have a feeling of heaviness that I carry in my chest on the day to day. That being the case, I like having blankets of this type sit below my waist. Can it reduce anxiety? Sure. But how it does so can also be a different experience for everyone.

Who else is this blanket good for? An average-sized individual (with regular weight or not too far from it) that sleeps with a partner. When I did sleep with a partner, my previous weighted blanket took up too much space. One with these measurements could have been the better alternative.

blanquil logo

The shifting glass pellets that create the blanket’s weight have been getting a bad wrap. From what I’ve observed in the marketplace, most weighted blankets are designed with the same stitching pattern in terms of how large the separate compartments are next to one another. While it’s possible that something more well distributed could be created, one also has to consider at what cost? There is some potential in the marketplace to still take over the weighted blanket space but it’d have to address most of the major concerns. At the price that will require (a more intricate stitching pattern and/or a different material that provides the weight needed), it might as well be marketed as solely a luxury item. This weighted blanket from Blanquil is similar to other weighted blankets, in that all weighted blankets are known for this: they’re known for their weight, as that’s what they’re designed to do, carry weight, and they’re known for their shifting pellets. These pellets are small, round and subtle and of course they will shift with you, they’re supposed to conform to your body’s space to provide that “snug” feeling. They’re not made of metal or tin. The shifting of the pellets is not loud or as exaggerated as some reviewers claim.

There is one thing that rubbed me wrong however about this product and that’s the way it arrived. There was a piece of paper attached to the package with the word “DROPSHIP,” and I felt that made the item simply unappealing because it revealed to me that it’s not entirely original. I don’t know HOW a mistake like this can go unnoticed and I think better quality control really needs to be in place.

My Blanquil Weighted Blanket Recommendation

As a result of all of my digging, I was able to isolate the biggest complaint and that was that Blanquil doesn’t cover return shipping due to the weight of the product. This means that many people find themselves dishing out approx $50 to return the item but of course even that number varies based on where they live and where it’s being shipped back to.

First of all, it’s ridiculous to state that individuals can get a “full refund,” then expect those customers to happily pay exorbitant amounts of money to return ship your item. Of course they’re going to be pissed about it. Whether the consumer realizes the return policy before or after purchasing your product is irrelevant. That return won’t exactly fulfil the typical standards of what the majority knows as  a “full refund.” When an individual has to pay extra to get that item back to you, that’s not a full refund. That extra money spent must then be negated from whatever you refund them. So to see things put in that manner, feels a little deceptive.

In terms of how this works for the company, it may be better to simply offer a non refundable item. That removes that problem from the equation entirely, the company maintains absolute transparency (“Hey, look. This is just the best we can do.”) and this way, every consumer is aware of what’s involved. It’s at least much more honest.

But there is still one more option. This is the way I’d do it:

  • Offer what’s called a “partial return”
  • Provide an already-paid-for shipping label

(Everyone appreciates pre-paid labels, they’re comforting. Even if we’re not getting ALL of our money back, we appreciate that a company strives to make the process less painful for us.)

  • Since the cost of most of the items listed on the website aren’t vast in difference, calculate the average cost of shipping per item and deduct this number from the total.
  • Bam!

I suggest that they do that or something similar because if the biggest complaint people have is your return policy, it’s something that needs to be addressed if you want people’s perception of your brand to change and be elevated.

By the way, if the most common complaint is your return policy, you should also consider that a compliment to the actual items you sell.

Oddly enough, you can also purchase the item through Amazon, where Prime members get free shipping and also free returns with this item, although that may vary depending on your location so be sure to double check.

Regardless of my criticism (and I do genuinely hope some of it is taken constructively), I do recommend this item. It’s a well-made high quality item.

The Blanquil Cooling Blanket

The BlanQuil cooling blanket is an updated version of the original BlanQuil weighted blanket. While the original blanket provided users with a calming and therapeutic sleeping experience, the new cooling blanket takes things a step further by incorporating innovative technology that regulates body temperature and provides a cool and comfortable sleeping environment.

One of the main differences between the two blankets is the materials used to make them. The original BlanQuil weighted blanket is made with a soft and cozy microfiber fabric, while the cooling blanket is made with a cooling fabric that wicks away moisture and promotes airflow.

Additionally, the cooling blanket contains high-density micro-bead technology that provides extra cooling properties, absorbing and releasing body heat to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the night. In contrast, the original weighted blanket is filled with glass beads that provide a calming, therapeutic effect by applying gentle pressure to the body.

Another difference between the two blankets is their cleaning and maintenance. The original weighted blanket is machine washable but needs to be air-dried to maintain its quality, while the cooling blanket can be both machine washed and dried.

In summary, while both the original BlanQuil weighted blanket and the new BlanQuil cooling blanket offer unique benefits, the cooling blanket takes things a step further by incorporating innovative technology that promotes airflow and regulates body temperature. So, if you’re looking for a comfortable and refreshing sleeping experience, the cooling blanket may be the better option for you.

Below you will see how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress. There is just enough sink to properly address shoulders and hips.

The top layer is a gel-infused foam that has tiny holes for a bit more breathability. It’s not a night and day difference from other foams but it does help a little.

Here you can see each individual layer. This mattress is made in China. The layering is clean and well made. It recovered faster than I expected out of the box. Usually, mattresses shipped from China take a lot longer to recover.

Here’s a side view showing contouring again. The top layer is where you will get most of the pressure relief.

There’s basically no motion transfer with this mattress. It’s all foam and the top layer is soft enough to absorb the initial impact quickly.

Here’s another video showing how fast the mattress recovers and what you can expect for softness. Again, the top layer provides the majority of the pressure relief while the other two layers help with support.

My Nigshlee Mattress Recommendation

Although there’s nothing really groundbreaking about this mattress, what did take me a bit by surprise is what you get for the money. $495 for a king size mattress with this construction is about as good as you can get. There are other mattresses on the market with similar construction at this price point but the foam is not as good of quality and will feel much firmer. I expect this mattress to last just as long as others in the market for twice as much.

If you are used to sleeping on a medium-firm foam mattress and are looking for a replacement that won’t break the bank this is your mattress.

This helps maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature throughout the night.

Who is the Nighslee mattress best for?

The Nighslee mattress is best for individuals seeking a comfortable, supportive mattress that offers good pressure relief and spinal alignment, particularly those who are budget-conscious. Its medium-firm feel accommodates side, back, and stomach sleepers, making it a versatile choice. The direct-to-consumer model also makes it an affordable option.

What are the downsides of the Nighslee mattress (if any)?

The provided information does not detail specific downsides of the Nighslee mattress.
