America’s best-rated certified organic mattress features GOLS-certified organic latex, GOTS-certified organic wool, GOTS-certified organic cotton, and up to 1,438 pocketed support coils arranged in 5 zones.
The Avocado Mattress, though named after the delicious fruit, doesn’t actually have any avocado in it! Its history is rather short, but full of interesting twists and turns that led it to become a popular choice for eco-conscious sleepers.
Founding a Greener Sleep in 2015:
The story starts in 2015, when four friends – Jeff D’Andrea, Dan D’Andrea, Jay Decker, and Mark Abrials – found themselves frustrated with the mattress industry. They craved a luxurious, organic mattress made with natural, non-toxic materials, but couldn’t find one that fit their budget. So, they decided to create their own.
Their vision: to craft a handcrafted, affordable mattress using certified organic materials and sustainable practices. This led to the birth of Avocado Mattress in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Needle-tufted Luxury and Eco-conscious Ethos:
Avocado Mattresses stand out for their unique features:
- Handcrafted with organic materials: Organic latex, organic cotton, and organic wool are the core components, ensuring a comfortable and breathable sleep experience.
- Needle-tufted construction: This traditional technique uses cotton ribbons pulled through each layer and secured with rosettes, eliminating the need for chemical adhesives.
- Direct-to-consumer model: By selling directly to customers, Avocado cuts out the middleman and offers its premium mattresses at competitive prices.
Merging with Brentwood Home in 2018:
In 2018, Avocado Mattress merged with Brentwood Home, a California-based company known for its luxury, non-toxic mattresses since 1987. This strategic move combined their expertise and resources, propelling the brand towards further growth.
Avocado Green Brands and Beyond:
Today, the company operates under the name Avocado Green Brands, encompassing not just mattresses but also a range of organic pillows, bedding, and furniture. They remain committed to their core values of sustainability, transparency, and ethical practices, making them a favorite among eco-conscious consumers.
A Legacy of Innovation and Sustainability:
The Avocado Mattress story is one of innovation and purpose. From humble beginnings to a thriving brand, they’ve carved a niche in the mattress industry by prioritizing both comfort and environmental responsibility. As the demand for healthy and sustainable sleep solutions continues to rise, Avocado Green Brands is well-positioned to lead the way.
Here’s a timeline summarizing the key milestones in Avocado Mattress’s history:
- 2015: Founded in Hoboken, New Jersey, by Jeff D’Andrea, Dan D’Andrea, Jay Decker, and Mark Abrials.
- 2016: Launches its first organic mattress, the Avocado Green Mattress.
- 2018: Merges with Brentwood Home, forming Avocado Green Brands.
- 2020: Expands product line to include organic pillows, bedding, and furniture.
- Present: Continues to develop innovative and sustainable sleep solutions, while advocating for ethical and environmentally responsible practices in the mattress industry.

Overview of the Avocado Mattress
This mattress received excellent ratings by Consumer Reports for the last 2 years. This is a very sought-after achievement. The quality is definitely there. You can choose to buy this mattress with or without the pillow top.
The video below is of the Avocado Green Mattress without the pillow top.
Here’s a quick video that explains the main features of the pillow top version of the Avocado mattress.
Construction of the Avocado Bed
Below are the construction details as listed on the Avocado Mattress website. The Avocado Mattress is basically a hybrid mattress in that it is primarily spring and latex. The most popular hybrid mattress construction is spring and foam.
Top Layer
The top layer consists of hand-tufted GOTS certified organic wool rosettes on top of an organic cotton cover. This tufting process makes the bed look amazing but also is used because you don’t need to use a glue to hold the pieces of the mattress together.
This also makes the Avocado mattress ideal for hot sleepers as the wool helps regulate temperature.
Middle layers
The pillow top consists of a 2-inch latex layer followed by another 2 inches of latex below that for a total of 4 inches of dunlop latex.
Base Layer
The base of the mattress features one of the most advanced, internal, pressure-point support units available made by Leggett & Platt — a Quantum Edge® Elite Combi-Zone®. The individually wrapped innersprings are arranged in 5 strategic zones, to support hips, back, and shoulders, plus a reinforced steel perimeter giving the bed a consistent level of support all the way to the edge so that you get proper support where you need it. And another 1-inch seamless layer of organic latex.
Avocado Green Mattress Certifications
Avocado is one of the greenest mattresses in the marketplace, hence the name, Avocado Green Mattress. Below are their certifications as listed on their website.
MADE SAFE® screens products for known harmful chemicals, bioaccumulation, persistence, and general and aquatic toxicity, including behavioral toxins, carcinogens, developmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, fire retardants, heavy metals, neurotoxins, high-risk pesticides, reproductive toxins, toxic solvents, and harmful VOCs. Our Avocado Green Mattress, organic mattress pad protectors, toppers and green pillows are certified under our brand name.
Formaldehyde Free by UL Environment
Formaldehyde, which is used to make one of the adhesives that hold mattresses together, is a VOC (a.k.a. off-gassing chemical that can linger for months) that has been linked to asthma, allergies, and lung, nose, and throat cancers. The EPA considers it a probable human carcinogen. It does not belong in any mattress. For assurance, the entirety of our Avocado Green Mattress has been lab tested in environmental chambers and certified by UL Environment to be free from Formaldehyde.
Every Avocado mattress and pillow is GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment. It means they’re scientifically tested to meet some of the world’s most rigorous emissions standards for chemical exposure and pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and phthalates.
eco-INSTITUT®
Our 100% GOLS organic certified natural latex is sourced from tree-tapped and sustainable latex sources in India. (FYI: Latex trees do not grow in the United States). Our latex is grown using only organic fertilizers. The finished latex is tested and certified for hazardous emissions by the eco-INSTITUT® — an international product testing and quality assurance company — by our provider, LIEN A. The eco-INSTITUT evaluates the latex for an extensive list of chemicals including: formaldehyde, VOCS (volatile organic compounds), heavy metals, pesticides, phthalates, and other potentially harmful chemicals.
OEKO-TEX
Our organic certified latex, wool and cotton have received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certifications (19.0.79546, 19.HIN.68466 & 15.HIN.75800, Hohenstein HTTI). These are strict standards for human and ecological safety. It means they’ve been tested in a lab to be free from allergenic dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and chloro-organic carriers, and are not harmful to the skin.
The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® is a worldwide consistent, independent testing and certification system for textile products at all processing levels. Our wool provider, JOMA Wool of New Zealand, adheres to the strict OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification to ensure human and ecological safety. This certifies that our wool is free from allergenic dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals, formaldehyde, chloro-organic carriers and has a pH that’s not harmful to the skin.
Free from harmful chemicals, organic cotton is better for your health and the people growing it. Organic cotton is also a more sustainable and ethical option, instead of conventional cotton. We’re proud that our cotton is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The cotton used in our ticking is sourced from our partner in South India, Bannari Amman Spinning Mills (fun fact: their facility is powered by windmills), then finished at our textile manufacturing processing center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
USDA ORGANIC – NATIONAL ORGANIC PROGRAM
Our natural materials — organic latex, wool and cotton — are GOTS and GOLS certified in our brand name. The factory we own in Los Angeles is also certified. And our finished products are certified. (Anything less makes no sense.) That’s why our license number is always listed under our GOTS and GOLS logos, as required. Of course, these stringent standards are fully endorsed by the USDA’s National Organic Program.
CLIMATE NEUTRAL

With Climate Neutral, the entirety of our carbon footprint is measured and verified, from raw material production and shipping to manufacturing and delivery. CARBONFUND – OFFSETTING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT
To offset 31,000 metric tons CO2e in 2018, we funded three large projects via Carbonfund to fight climate change: Deforestation Projects in the Brazilian Amazon, helping to protect the rainforest from slash and burn agriculture and cattle ranchers; the Aqua Clara Safe Drinking Water, reducing the need in Africa to burn unsustainable biomass in order to boil water; and the Burn Stoves Project, saving lives and forests by making the burning of charcoal in Kenya more efficient and safe.
DONEGOOD
DoneGood brands do good for people, animals, and the planet. They obsess over what makes it into their products, where those items are sourced, and how it impacts their customers, workers, and the world around them. And they believe in quality, fairness, and sustainability over profit. We are proud to be members of the DoneGood brand community.
MATERIALS
The Dunlop latex used is 100% GOLS organic certified. Avocado directly manages 4,000+ acres of FSC® certified latex rubber tree plantations. Our latex is processed by Avocado Organic Latex. Yes, we also jointly own our GOLS organic certified latex processing facility in Kerala, India.
The wool is 100% GOTS organic certified wool sourced from India.
The coils also have a sustainable story in that they are made with recycled steel.
The cotton is 100% GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified.
Avocado Vegan Mattress
VEGAN CERTIFIED
Our Vegan Mattress and bedding products have been certified and verified by Vegan Action (The Vegan Awareness Foundation) in Richmond, Virginia, under our brand name. These products do not use wool and do not contain animal products or byproducts and that have been tested on animals. Instead of wool, a generous layer of 100% GOTS organic certified cotton batting is used.
PETA APPROVED
Our Vegan Mattress is also PETA-approved VEGAN products under our brand name — certified to be animal-free products (i.e., wool) that align with vegan values.
Avocado Bed With or Without Pillowtop?
If you’re trying to decide between the Avocado with or without the pillow top. Here’s a detailed explanation from Avocado about the differences between the two:
On our standard Avocado mattress, we use two seamless layers of Dunlop latex: 2 inches in the comfort layer (D75 / 24-28 ILD, soft); and a denser 1-inch layer (D95, firm) as a core base component under the innerspring support coil unit.
On the Avocado Mattress with the optional Pillow-Top, we use three seamless layers of Dunlop latex — 2 inches in the Euro-top layer (D75 / 24-28 ILD, soft), 2 more inches in the comfort layer (D75 / 24-28 ILD, soft), and a denser 1-inch layer (D95 / 36-38 ILD, firm) as a core base component. No blended or synthetic latex is used, and there are no seams to break down over time and no chemical adhesives are used between the comfort layers.
I prefer the Avocado Pillowtop over the regular Avocado. Heavy sleeprs have the luxury of choosing either option because the latex will support extra weight. The same goes for stomach sleepers but I think stomach sleepers should go with the non-pillowtop option.
Combination sleepers are best suited for the Pillow top version of the Avocado mattress but if you can afford it, go with the Avocado Luxury Mattress.
The Avocado Vegan Mattress
If you want the Vegan mattress option, they just switch the wool for cotton. The Avocado Green Mattress consists of the following materials. The average customer rating for the Avocado Vegan mattress is 4.6 out of 5.
Our vegan mattress features 100% natural latex rubber, 100% GOTS certified organic cotton and up to 1,414 pocketed support coils. No polyurethane foams or toxic fire retardants. It’s exactly the same as our Avocado Green Mattress but uses cotton instead of wool.
There really isn’t much difference between feel between the Avocaodo wool vs Avocado Vegan mattress construction.
How Much Does the Avocado Mattress Cost?
The price of the Avocado Green Mattress depends on whether or not you go with or without the pillow top option. The price will be the same whether or not you choose the regular or vegan option. Prices constantly change so it’s best to check directly on the Avocado website.

Why Is the Avocado so Expensive?
The Avocado mattress may be more expensive than other mattresses on the market due to several factors related to the materials used, the manufacturing process, and the company’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Here are some reasons why the Avocado mattress may have a higher price point:
High-quality materials: Avocado mattresses are made from eco-friendly and natural materials, such as organic latex, organic cotton, and organic wool. These materials tend to be more expensive than synthetic alternatives, like memory foam or polyester.
Certified materials: The company sources its materials from certified suppliers, ensuring that they meet strict environmental and social standards. For example, their latex is GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified, and their cotton is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified. These certifications can add to the overall cost of the mattress.
Manufacturing process: Avocado mattresses are handcrafted in the United States, which can contribute to higher labor and production costs compared to mattresses manufactured overseas.
Durability and longevity: The natural materials used in Avocado mattresses tend to be more durable and longer-lasting than many synthetic alternatives, which can justify a higher initial investment.
Commitment to sustainability: Avocado is committed to environmentally friendly practices, such as using recycled steel in their innerspring coils and reducing waste during manufacturing. These practices may increase production costs but contribute to a more sustainable product.
Social responsibility: The company is dedicated to giving back through various initiatives, such as donating mattresses to those in need and supporting environmental causes. This commitment to social responsibility can influence the price of their products.
While the Avocado mattress may be more expensive than other options, many customers believe that the quality, durability, and eco-friendly materials used in its construction justify the higher price.
My Avocado Mattress Findings
The Avocado has a medium-firm feel. However, because it is tufted, you get more of a true pillow top feel. With many latex mattresses, you get a flat feel with more or less sink depending on what type of latex is used. The tufting makes a significant difference here.
Here’s a video illustrating bounce on the Avocado mattress. It has quite a bit of bounce:
Another plus for this mattress is the edge support. Usually, all latex mattresses sink a little at the edge but because this mattress has a coil system as well, you get the benefit of added edge support so that you can use all of the mattresses and sleep right up to the edge without feeling like you will fall off.
Aside from the hand tufting, this mattress also has stitched handles that make it easy to rotate or transport.
Since the Avocado is made with latex and quality springs. According to Avocado, the weight limit is 350 lbs. per person, or 700 lbs. in total making it a good choice for heavy people.
Another common question is whether or not the Avocado Bed is Vegan. And, yes, you can get a vegan option for this mattress. The vegan option replaces the wool layer with cotton.

You can find detailed information on the Avocado Mattress on their website here. Avocado offers a 25-year warranty. Here are some of the high-level details of the warranty.
YEARS 1-10: FULL COVERAGE — NON-PRORATED
During the first ten (10) years of the Limited Warranty, Avocado Mattress will not charge the purchaser to repair or replace the purchaser’s mattress if it qualifies under the Limited Warranty. This period is non-prorated which means that we don’t charge you a percentage of the repair costs or replacement product based on the amount of time you slept on the mattress prior to noticing a defect.
YEARS 11-25: LIMITED COVERAGE — PRORATED
During years 11-25 of this 25-Year Limited Warranty Avocado Mattress will, at its option, replace the mattress at a prorated charge to the purchaser plus transportation and/or shipping charges. The prorated replacement charged will be dependent on the year that the mattress is replaced.
My Avocado Mattress Recommendation
If you’re in the market for an all-natural mattress, the Avocado should be near to the top of your list. They have done a phenomenal job of blending traditional coils and tufting techniques along with natural latex, organic wool and organic cotton. Aside from the natural benefits this provides, it feels like a high-quality mattress. Latex is a very durable material and so you won’t have issues with depressions over time.
An emerging trend with natural mattresses is a free trial period. Avocado now has a 1-year night free trial period where if you don’t like it for whatever reason you can return it for a full refund. This really takes a trial to the next level and lets you try out an Avocado in all 4 seasons to know if it is truly right for you. There are still many natural mattresses that don’t offer a free trial period and so it can be a gamble when buying online without trying first. Avocado takes away the anxiety of purchasing natural mattresses online.
Many people ask, does the Avocado Mattress work on an adjustable base? Yes, it does! Contrary to other reports, this mattress will work with an adjustable base.
In my Avocado Green Mattress review, I have used it for months on an adjustable base just fine.
Final Thoughts on the Avocado Green Mattress
The Avocado Green mattress is one of the best organic mattresses I have reviewed. It should outlast an all foam mattress because it is a durable mattress with durable materials. Average weight side sleepers will want to go with the Pillow top option or the Luxury Option. But don’t take my word for it, there are plenty of other mattress reviews that concur with my findings and were also please with how the Avocado mattress performed.
Does the Avocado Mattress Sag?
no mattress is immune to wear and tear over time. Factors such as usage, body weight, and maintenance can contribute to sagging in any mattress. To minimize sagging in an Avocado mattress or any other mattress, it’s important to:
- Rotate the mattress regularly: This can help distribute wear and tear more evenly across the surface, preventing the formation of body impressions.
- Use a supportive foundation: A proper foundation can provide the necessary support to prevent sagging. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the best foundation to use with your mattress.
- Maintain a healthy weight: Carrying excess body weight can put additional strain on a mattress, potentially causing it to sag prematurely.
- Replace the mattress when necessary: Over time, even the best mattresses will wear out and may need to be replaced. Most mattresses last for around 7-10 years, but this can vary based on factors such as usage and material quality.
Why Do Avocado Mattresses Smell?
Although Avocado mattresses use eco-friendly and natural materials, such as organic latex, organic cotton, and organic wool, some odor may still be present when the mattress is new. However, the smell is generally less intense and less persistent than in synthetic foam mattresses, as the materials used in Avocado mattresses are considered to be low-VOC and more environmentally friendly.
To minimize any smell from a new Avocado mattress, you can:
- Allow the mattress to air out: Remove all packaging materials and let the mattress breathe in a well-ventilated room for a few hours or even a couple of days before using it. This will allow VOCs to disperse and the odor to dissipate.
- Use a mattress protector: A high-quality, breathable mattress protector can help minimize any lingering odors and protect your mattress from stains and allergens.
- Regularly clean and air your bedding: Washing your sheets and airing out your bedding regularly can help keep your sleeping environment fresh and minimize any odors.
The initial smell from a new Avocado mattress should dissipate within a few days to a couple of weeks. If the odor persists or seems unusually strong, you may want to contact the manufacturer for assistance.

Is your softness rating equivalent to a mattress firmness rating? I see most of those are a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the firmest. Avocado’s website says they rate their mattress a 6, but the scale is the opposite — 1 is firm as a board and 10 is soft as a cloud. I would expect that to translate to a 4 on your scale?
Also, they tell me their spring gauge is 17 in the middle zone of the bed, which surprised me, as I thought the middle would offer more support.
Any thoughts?
This mattress skews firmer than most mattresses I have reviewed. The Latex layer is the primary reason for this. I found it to be firmer than the Natural Escape from My Green Mattress
Is this more or less firm than a loom & leaf relaxed firm? The loom & leaf is making my arms fall asleep at night.
I would say just as firm.
Do you know what the weight limit is for this mattress?
I’m not sure. I weigh around 200 lbs. and it supports me just fine. I think it could easily support more than that though. The top layer is latex which is very resilient and durable.
I sleep on both stomach and side. 200 lbs. Would this bed last longer/be any better if purchased without optional pillow top? (could purchase something separately and replace if needed) How would you compare this to WinkBed?
The Avocado is slightly firmer than the Winkbed. The pillow top on the Avocado is 3 inches of latex which is a very durable and resilient material. I would expect the spring system to break down faster than the pillow top so you should be just fine getting the pillow top.
Bought the Avocado brand because they are authentic and the customer service was first class. This article was helpful in helping me make the right choice for me. Thank you.
Do you have the Avocado Mattress in your showroom?
The Avocado mattress should be arriving in about a week for the showroom.
Great. Can you please post when the Avacado mattress is in and available to see in the showroom?
Yes, it will be listed on the shworoom page.
I just bought the Natural Escape based on your recommendations. The Avocado seemed a little too pricy and too firm for me. This will be my eighth mattress in a little over a year. I’ve tried the Brooklyn Bedding soft and medium. The Ghost Bed. The Saatva bed soft. The Nest Alexander soft and medium. And finally the Nest Hybrid which seems too soft. I hope this is the one. I am out of town sleeping on a medium firm spring mattress that is much more comfortable than all the mattresses I have tried. I am crossing my fingers because if the Natural Escape mattress doesn’t work than I don’t know what I’ll be sleeping on. Maybe the ground.
Hi Benny,
I’m curious to know what you think of the Avocado mattress as I am in a similar situation with less than stellar mattress experiences this past year. I currently have the Nest bed (Smarthouse Cool) and going to return it as it’s caused lower back pain from my hips sinking in too much (I get relief when I sleep on other beds), and I previously had the Loom & Leaf Luxury Firm. I’ve come to realize I don’t like memory foam as a result of the heat despite what is advertised, along with the sinkage. I am now considering innersprings with latex and looking at the Brentwood Home line as well as others but just came across this bed and wondering what you think of it?
Hi,
Can you give an update on the Natural Escape mattress? I’m thinking of getting one as the all Dunlop mattress I have now is both painful unsupportive.
Thanks
how did the Natural Escape Mattress work out for you? I am considering it as well
How does this one compare to the Zenhaven?
The tufting on the Avocado really gives it a different feel. I would say it is about the same firmness as the soft side of the Zen haven but you wil sink into it a little more.
Just found Avocado Green site. Looks good but firmness levels are giving me pause. We have been sleeping on a Room and Board encased foam firm now wanting to replace for myself, a side and stomach sleeper, and husband who is a side and back sleeper. We are both trim and of average/ low average weight. Any thoughts on which firmness level to consider?
Latex will feel firmer than memory foam so going with the non-pillow top version of the Avocado should be just right.
I currently have the Alpine Natural Mattress and am looking for something which still has support but is a little softer on top. Do you think that I would find this in the Avocado mattress? Should I get the pillowtop cover or look for a mattress cover that goes with it? Thanks!
The Avocado with the pillow top should be very similar in feel.
I’m torn between the Avocado and the Saatva plush. I’m a side sleeper and get frequent numb arms. I noticed in a comment that someone tried the Saavta and returned it. What’s your opinion comparing the two mattresses? I like how natural the Avocado is but am concerned about sleep comfort as I also am regarding the Saavta.
The Avocado is much more natural than the Saatva. The Avocado uses natural latex for cushion and wool as a fire barrier. However, the Avocado will feel firmer than the Saatva.
I am a 245# side sleeper. Contemplating Avocado because it is latex and coil hybrid. From my research it’s been suggested that heavier side sleepers should select medium-firm or firm to support body weight. The idea of adding pillow top sounds appealing and luxurious, but I’m concerned it may be too soft for me. What do you think? Also, any thoughts on how Avocado compares with Mirador from Brentwood Home (another latex and coil hybrid). Thanks!
I think you would be just fine with the pillow top. Since it is latex you won’t sink in as much as if it were foam. The Mirador is going to feel slightly softer than the Avocado.
I haven’t slept on the Plush Beds Luxury Bliss mattress so can’t speak directly to feel but one distinction is that the Avocado is hand tufted which helps keep the layers in place. The Avocado also has an organic cotton cover not sure about PlushBeds. Also the Avocado seems to have a better trial. I can only find this model on Amazon which has a standard 30 day trial.
I have tried many beds, including sleep number where I am about a 30. Looking for a very soft, pillowtop which has some support. What do you recommend ? Have gone through 3 mattresses this year, all too firm. Thanks in advance for your advice.
I would check out the Brentwood Home Oceano
hi do you think this mattress will be compatible with an adjustable base over time? I mean given the coils. Do they get disfigured or out of wack with constant bending and unbending of the mattress?
I’m trying to decide between zenhaven and avocado. The price difference won’t be deciding point. I want supportive and firm, but without pressure points. And a cool sleep–I can’t wait to get rid of my tempurpedic! To me, the quandary is between the avocado with coils vs. the zenhaven that is all latex foam, and is reversible. Trial periods are comparable. Both “green” and natural. Your thoughts?
I would go with the Avocado. I found the Avodaco to be more supportive in my lower baack than the Zen Haven.
Agreed! And Avocado keeps you very cool at night. I actually had to add another layer because I tend to be cold all the time!
i’m curious if you would go with a pillowtop or regular for low back problems, as well as the numbness issues in hands … ???
I would go with the pillow top option
Have been sleeping on an old Sterns and Foster coil mattress/box spring for way too long. Went to box store who analyzed our sleep needs and determined that we would both enjoy a softer memory foam; we actually much preferred a Tempur-pedic Flex Supreme Hybrid to anything else in the store. Based on what we seem to prefer and our desire for something as natural (untreated) as reasonable we are deciding between Avocado and the Brentwood Home Oceano or Mirador.
Any advice on which to try first? We are both back and side sleepers (spouse is 200 lbs and I’m 155 lbs).
The Brentwood Home Oceano is going to feel closer to the Tempurpedic Flex Supreme Hybrid.
Hi 🙂 I am interested in a natural mattress and so far have only come across the avocado and my green mattress. I have a severe back problems and went from a too soft mattress to a too hard mattress. I am a back sleeper due to the mattress being too hard would like to be able to sleep on my side. Which mattress would you recommend? I currently have a wool topper on my mattress and even that feels too firm depending on the days and I find my muscles all right. Thanks so much 🙂
I found the Natural Escape from My Green Mattress to be softer than the Avocado, even with the pillow top option.
*tight* but there are days I can sleep on it ok!
I am looking to buy a number of new mattresses for a vacation home. I was pretty sold on the Avocado, as I am looking for a green mattress. However, I have read your multiple recommendations for the Oceana. As a vacation home, there will be different style and weight sleepers in the queen beds over time.
I am buying a King for the Master Bedroom. I am 5’9″, 145 lbs, and currently sleep on my back and side.
I appreciate your site and find the info very helpful. Thank you.
The Avocado will be firmer than the Oceano so if you like a firmer mattress the Avocado is the way to go. Both offer great support. The Avocado uses latex and springs while the Oceano is memory foam and springs. I found the Oceano to offer a little more pressure relief due to the fact they use foam.
Which would have a softer feel, the Avocado with pillowtop or without pillowtop? Thanks!
The pillow top option would have the softer feel.
Ben, we’re you warm/hot when sleeping on the Avocado?
P.S. My super picky sister recently bought a mattress through you and loves it!
I didn’t sleep hot on it. If anything I think it sleeps cooler than most foam mattresses because the latex has holes throughout which helps it breathe. Additionally, the natural wool fire barrier also helps regulate temperature.
Hi, I recently purchased the mid range Intellibed. It is too firm and killing my back! In your opinion will the Avocado with the pillow top be cushy enough or would you go Oceano? Or a different mattress altogether?
Thanks!
Given your experience with the Intellibed, I think you will find the Avocado a bit too firm, even with the pillow top. I would go with the Oceano.
Thanks for your great reviews. I am trying to decide between the Nest Hybrid Latex Medium and the Avocado Pillow top. I like that luxury Plush mattress feel, but prefer to latex to memory foam. Which would you recommend?
I would go with the Avocado.
Hi – would the Avocado be suitable with our bed’s slats? there’s about 3/4″ – 1″ space between each slat and the next. Thanks!
Yes, absolutely. The Avocado will work great on a slated base system like this.
Wow I’m so thankful that I found your site. Thank you for the reviews and the feedback that you provide. I have a similar question to a few above. Currently I sleep on a traditional Japanese futon mattress. I have scoliosis and low back issues and thought that this sleeping style might help me gain some alignment and stability. However, it has zero give for my pressure points and is very hard on my hips and shoulders. I sleep on my back, my side and my stomach on occasion. Because I really appreciate the eco-friendly options I like the My Green, and the Avocado. However, I thought that the Saatva mattress might be an option as well. Your thoughts? Thank you!
I think the Avocado with the Pillow Top would be an excellent choice. The My Green Mattress will feel a bit softer though and the plush version of the Cedar by Brentwood home would feel softer than that. The Saatva is not a natural mattress.
Thank you!
I slept on a traditional Japanese futon and had the same issue. I added a feather bead and it made it the most wonderful sleep ever. Bed Bath and Beyond had a nice one.
Appreciate the reviews. I’m between the My Green Mattress Natural Escape and the Avocado (without pillow top) for my 4 year sons first twin bed. It looks like the Natural Escape boast a thicker latex top layer and a slightly softer feel. Any thoughts or recommendations between the two?
I often recommend the Natural Escape because it is more affordable and still very well constructed.
Hi there, I am purchasing a mattress for my 20 year old daughter. She is about 5’3″ 115 lbs. She absolutely loved the purple mattress but I wanted something healthier for her. She doesn’t like a sinking in feel and is asking for firm, which the purple did just right it seems. Would you go with the standard or the pillow top?
Thank you!
I would go with the pillow top option
Hi Ben: Trying to decide between avocado and purple. We are looking for firm lower back support.
Both are a really good choice. The biggest differences are of course price and the Cedar uses natural materials while the Purple is primarily a foam mattress with the Polymer grid. The Cedar will hug you more while you sort of rest on top of the Purple. In terms of sleeping cool the Purple will sleep cooler.
Hey Ben – We are in the market for a very green, cool-sleeping mattress. Tend to like a firmer sleep and my husband will need something with extra support. The Avocado is a top contender. Is there a mattress you might suggest that will compete with the Avocado for the factors I describe? Or is the Avocado a pretty solid choice?
Do you think the pillow-top will make it too hot to sleep on or does it breathe well?
Thanks!
Avocado is definitely the way to go. The pillow top won’t affect the breathability and even with the pillow top it will be on the firmer side.
Thank you for your website. I purchased a Sealy bed and the smell is unbearable. I plan to return it and purchase a greener bed. My husband is interested in loom and leaf but I came across avocado tonight. I am a side sleeper, he is a stomach sleeper that gets hot. I have asthma and am sensitive to odors. What bed would you recommend to us? Ideally odor free, not hot, and can relieve pressure points.
I have heard some comments about the Avocado mattress having some annoying points where the wool rosettes sit on top. Some reviews note that this could be irritating to people who are sensitive to sensory stimuli. Have you experienced this?
I have heard that complaint as well however I didn’t personally notice it. I use a mattress protector below the sheets which provides another layer and smooths things out a bit more.
how does the avocado compare with the winkbed in terms of firmness and the floating effect you get with springs? Does the Avocado ship rolled? Does the Winkbed ship rolled?
The Avocado ships rolled. The Winkbed does not. Both have springs. They are about the same in terms of firmness as well with the luxury firm Winkbed being about the same firmness as the pillow top version of the Avocado.
I just received the Avocado mattress w/out the pillow top. Okay, this is my 3rd mattress (1st – commercial brand, 2nd Airweave -liked the breathability, but, too firm). I saw all the glowing reviews about Avocado being firm and breathable. I think because of how the weave is on the organic cotton top layer (soft flannel like) it is creating a lot of heat. Not very breathable. I thought I was making an educated good choice, but, I am a weaver (know my textiles)…I should of known better. Also, there is an output of a distinct cotton smell and it is the fibers…it is making my throat scratchy. Just because it’s organic doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the endall. The structure of the fabric does make a difference hopefully that will dissipate. Being menopausal…sleeping cool is so important. I haven’t seen any reviews stating this….so, here it is…be forewarned.
I have similar issues with needing to stay cool. What mattress did you end up with?
What do you think of the Avocado mattress directly on a wood floor that has radiant heating under the floor boards? Thanks!
I don’t think that will be a problem. The base layer is a coil system.
We are looking into a new mattress, currently sleeping on an old (10-12 yrs) traditional mattress that’s giving me shoulder/hip pain (husband and I are both side sleepers). He’s concerned about sleeping comfort, I’m also concerned about getting a natural mattress. Would avocado + pillow top still be too firm for us side sleepers? (5’4”, 130; 6’1”, 190)
Yes, I think it may still be a little too firm. I would go with the Cedar from Brentwood Home in this case.
How does the Avocado compare with the Nectar mattress in terms of firmness and motion transfer?
The Avocado will be firmer and have more motion transfer because it has coils. This is because the Avocado is made with springs and latex while the Nectar is a memory foam mattress.
I found this mattress (Queen w/ pillow-top) to be the most firm mattress I’ve ever experienced, anywhere I’ve ever slept. Any part of my body that was touching the mattress, whether lying on my back or side, started to become numb after a few minutes. I recently was sleeping on a spring mattress w/ a 2 inch foam top (w/ Zinus box foundation). I’ve had the Avocado for 2 nights now, and and have found it hard to fall asleep, and once asleep, would frequently awake in various positions, which I can only assume to be my body’s way of relieving pressure. I’ve never felt this type of all-over pressure/numbing anywhere I’ve slept (including sleeping bags on floors or camping). I weigh about 185-190lbs and am fairly fit. I’m going to give it a little more time, but this is not pleasant at all, so far.
I really love the eco-friendly measures, and healthful nature of the company though.
Correction: There is very very slight off-gassing, almost unnoticeable, and not unpleasant in any way.

I’ve had the Avocado Queen w/ pillow top for a week now, and I haven’t had a solid night’s sleep yet. I find it way to firm for this side sleeper. I’m a decently fit person, and weigh around 185-190lbs. I’m waking throughout the night relieving arm numbness, shoulder soreness, as well as ribs, hip, and legs. I would rate it a 9 for firmness. I will be returning it, and think I’ll be going for an all-latex layered mattress.
I am a side sleeper, and experience lower back problems. Unfortunately, I also notice shoulder pain with some mattresses. We’re currently in the trial period with the Brentwood Home Cedar mattress, but will likely return it (too soft).
Would you suggest the Avocado in my case, and if so, the pillow top version, or not?
I would try the Avocado with the Pillow top, it will still be much firmer than the Cedar.
Hi – I’m trying to decide between the Avocado with pillowtop, Plushbed botanical bliss or luxury bliss, and brentwood home cedar or oceano.
I’m looking for latex hybrid or maybe 100% latex. I’m a stomach and side sleeper and my husband is a back sleeper. We have a super plush pillow top now that got indentations really quick and my lower back always hurts. I’m looking for something more medium, but still soft and plush, but not super plush, and really want something that will last and not get indentations. At first I really liked the Brentwood oceano, but now am leaning towards brentwood cedar or Avocado or Plushbeds. I have had the chance to lay on the avocado w/ pillow top and don’t find it too firm, but would be open to slightly softer — not too much though, especially given I sleep primarily on my stomach.
Any recommendations of the 3 based on all the notes above?
Would like to know about this as well. We are in almost the same boat.
Hi, have you tried the current version of the Nest Alexander Latex Hybrid (firm or medium)? If so, how does that compare to the Avocado? Would the Avocado be firmer than the firm version of the Nest Latex Hybrid? Thanks for your insight.
Yes, the Avocado without the pillow top would be firmer than the firm version of the Nest Latex Hybrid.
Hi,
Thank you so much for your organized and helpful reviews! You are making this daunting process much easier and more efficient. How would you rate the Avocado in terms of temperature. I’m looking for a hybrid natural/organic mattress that has a firm feel but also doesn’t get too hot as my husband tends to sleep hot. I’m considering Avocado and Cedar. Thank you!
These natural mattresses are fairly temperature neutral and I don’t think it will be an issue. The Avocado is a bit firmer than the Cedar, even with the pillow top.
THank you so much for your reviews — your site has been so helpful to me in this daunting process.
Considering an avocado mattress as I want an organic hybrid that feels firm. 2 questions:
– How is it on temperature (my husband tends to sleep hot).
– Have you ever noticed the buttons or heard of people feeling them or being bothered? I read that in one review and not sure how much to take that into consideration.
Thank you for any advice!
Laura
The Avocado is pretty temperature neutral since the latex has holes that are breathable and the cover is made of cotton. I have heard other people noticing the buttons on the tufting but that can easily be addressed with a mattress pad. I personally don’t notice it.
Hello,
Great website!
I recently tried the my green mattress pure echo. It was way too firm. I put a soft mattress topper on it from Sleep On Latex. It felt great when I laid down, but by 2 am it had a weird super soft feeling laid over a hard surface. My wife thought the same thing and she complained of back pain. We then tried the my green mattress natural escape. My wife likes it much better than I do, but after a few weeks it is getting more comfortable. I have really wanted to try the Avocado and got a great deal so I ordered one. However, I came across to your site after I ordered and now I’m wondering how much I’ll like it (seems more firm than natural escape). I’m 5’11” 155 and wife is 5’4″ 115.
Thoughts? Any other suggestions. It looks like you really like the Brentwood. Also, a mattress could not be “green” enough for my wife. The more certifications (legit ones of course) the better.
Thanks.
I would take a look at the Cedar from Brentwood Home. Similar to the Avocado just softer.
Hi, You seem to have the best unbiased website that I have seen. I wish I could fly to San Diego, CA to try your beds in the showroom. I currently have a Savvy Rest with 3″ firm dunlop,3″ med dunlop and #’ soft latex on top. I have had terrible back pain even though I have adjusted the layers. It was a $3,000 bed so want to make the right choice this time. I am trying to decide between an Avocado Green or a Saatva. I slept on a friends Saatva and was pretty comfortable but I like the feel of the latex on top and the mostly organic materials in the Avocado. I also tried a Diamond Ethos with a latex top which felt great but it is not organic at all either. I have a adjustable bed so I like the idea of the 11″ Saatva.I am only 5″2 and 115, I am considering trying the Avocado without the pillow top and then adding the separate pillow top if it is too firm. How does the Avocado Pillowtop compare with the Saatva in firmness.? Thank You!
The Avocado is firmer than the Saatva Luxury firm, even with the Pillow top. If you want to get a similar firmness to the Saatva but with natural materials, I would checkout the Brentwood Home Cedar mattress.
Thank you I will check out the Brentwood Cedar. . Since I first posted this question, I went to the Avocado showroom and really like the Avocado with sewn in pillow top over the firm with the optional pillow top. I havent tried the Saatva firm so I dont know what that is like. Saatva says they are natural and the memory foam is certi-pur. What do you think of that claim? I like the 11.5 ” option otherwise I would just go with the avocado.
I’m somewhat allergic or sensitive to wool. You say the cover is organic cotton, so I assume all the wool is below that. And of course I would have sheets, but I’m a little worried about the wool and respiratory reactions. Guess only way to know is to try.
Hey there!
I’m currently stuck between the Avocado and the Happsy.
I prefer a firmer mattress, husband I are both side/stomach sleepers of average weight.
In terms of overall quality and comfort which do you recommend?
Thanks!
Also, my husband tends to sleep quite hot. Is one better than the other for this?
Avocado is on my shortlist and wondered if you had any advice. I’m 5’4″ and 200lbs, curvy (hips), and mostly a side sleeper.
I currently have the Clarity from The Natural Mattress Store in San Francisco, with the “medium-soft” talalay latex layer and “regular” springs (they have a model with firmer springs too). I find the plush layer to be good as a side sleeper, but I think I need stronger springs to provide better support. I’m sore when I wake up.
I like beds that envelope you but only on the surface, not where you sink into a hole.
Do you think the Avocado would be too firm? Between Brentwood Cedar, MyGreenMattress Natural Escape and (if you’ve tried it) the PlushBeds latex/springs combo, which would you recommend?
Any others I should consider, even if they are slightly more expensive? My budget is flexible for quality, but it’s not infinite. I don’t know if it helps but if I were rich, the Vispring Regal Superb would be the ideal mattress for me :). I got to sleep on one for a week and it was perfect.
Hi Sarah, I would give the Avocado a try. From what you describe about sinking but not too much, the pillow top option would be a good choice.
We have had a Tempurpedic Cloud Elite for 3 years. It is too soft and has sunken areas on both sides; my lower back is in pain every night. It also sleeps very hot. I am 5’2″ and 110 #, my husband is 5’10” and 175#, both mainly side sleepers and occasionally on the back. We would like something firmer. Would the Avocado work? With or without the pillow top? Or another suggestion. Thanks for any help!
Yes, the Avocado would definitely help. It will certainly sleep firmer and should sleep cooler too.
My husband and I just finished a 100 day trial with the Avocado. We have liked it for the most part, but feel that it is just too firm for us. We have even added the pillow top, and it still feels a little too firm. We both weigh between 150-170. My husband is a back/side sleeper and I’m a stomach/back/side sleeper. We are going back and forth between a Happsy and the Cedar by Brentwood Home. Would you have a recommendation? We want some firmness, but just a bit softer than the Avocado would be perfect!
Either would be softer. If you go with the Happsy definitely get the pillow top.
I think I have narrowed our choices down to the Avocado green king and the Q3 latex king mattress. I am a big guy about 300 lbs my wife is about 175 and we both mostly sleep on our back. Do you have any thoughts which might be the best fit for us or do you have a better suggestion?
Given your size and sleeping position, I think the Avocado would be the way to go.
Hello,
I currently have a Savvy Rest latex only and I have had back pain since I bought it . My hips sink into the foam too much even when I change the layers around. I have decided on a hybrid instead. I am small but prefer a firmer bed. I am trying to decide between the Avocado pillow top and the Saatva firm. I have laid on both the Saatva luxery firm and feel it might be a little too soft. I went to the Avocado showroom and I like the feel of the latex top. I would like to stick with an organic bed but I like the fact that Saatva has the 11.5″ option with the eurotop. They say they are “natural”.I have an adjustable bed and an iron bed frame so concerned the Avocado will be too high. 13″ . My current bed is only 9″ Thank You!
Hello! I originally ordered the Happsy (no topper) and at first thought it was too soft so then I ordered an Avocado. The Avocado seems to be made with many thoughtful details (which makes me think it may be of higher quality than the Happsy) but now that I’ve tried both I think the Happsy is more comfortable. Regarding firmness, which would you say is firmer – the Avocado or Happsy? Which has more coils inside? Does that matter? I think maybe the Avocado sleeps a bit hotter to me than the Happsy – has that been your experience? Thank you!
I found the pillow top option Avocado to be a little softer than the Happsy.
I originally began looking at the Avocado pillowtop, but think it may be too firm for me, a side sleeper with RA. In reading this long thread, notice you used to recommend the Brentwoodhome Oceana, but now the Cedar, though both are available. In your opinion, is the Cedar a better mattress?
Hi! Can you please compare the pillow top on the avocado to the pillow top on the wink bed mattress? I tried the winkbed luxury firm and firm, liked the firm but the pillowtop was a bit too soft for me. Thanks!
Hi there and thank you for your site. We currently have a Saatva Firm which we had swapped out from a Saatva Luxury Firm. The Luxury Firm didn’t feel like it had enough support, as we like the feeling of sleeping on top of the mattress. So they replaced it with the Firm. We like the firmness, but I am now having pain in hips, shoulders and numbness, so I think it is probably too hard on the surface. Also it has quickly developed indentations at the top and bottom third as the middle band seems to be thicker from what I assume is lumbar support. I do not care for memory foam so was considering switching to the Avocado. We are both side and back sleepers. I’m 113 lbs and my husband is about 170 lbs. Would you recommend the Avocado for us or something else? If Avocado, with or without pillow top? Thanks so much.
I am thinking of getting the Avocado Mattress. I like a firm mattress. Can you compare the firmnesses of the Spring with Latex mattresses and tell me which is the firmest one? Thanks.
If you go without the pillowtop it will be firm. I wouldn’t advise going firmer than that.
I forgot to mention that we also tried the Amore Luxury hybrid, luxury firm on my side and medium on my wife’s. She liked it but it was too soft for me.
I just got a Winkbeds luxury firm and it is not providing enough support for my lower back. I’m looking for a bed that will accommodate me – I prefer firm beds – as well as my wife, who is a side sleeper and likes medium beds. Is the Avocado firm more firm than the firm Winkbed, and if so, is it still bearable for a side sleeper to be okay on? I’m trying to figure out why it rated so highly for all types of sleepers in Consumer Reports. I tried the Sleep on Latex firm as well (also top rated by Consumer Reports) and it was far too firm for the both of us.
Hello,
Does the cotton pillow top avocado mattress also have the same level of flame retardant and cooling capabilities? Or is that specific to the wool?
Thank you for these videos and your reviews btw. It is very helpful while the world is temporarily shut down.
The wool is better at regulating temperature but I didn’t notice that much of a difference between the topper and non-topper version in terms of heat retention.
Im looking to purchase a mattress. I want to purchase an ecofriendly mattress, and Avocado is at the top of my list, however I am a side sleeper, and based on my research it sounds too firm. My current mattress is old and my arms are falling asleep, I wanted to try the Oceana by Brentwood for its softness, but the Cedar is more aligned with my green mattress goals. So the question is the Cedar with or without the mattress topper, or the Avocado with the mattress topper?
I would go with the Cedar with the mattress topper which will be softer than the Avocado with the topper. https://yawnder.com/cedar-mattress-review/
Do you know if Avocado is firmer than the Saatva Firm? And if so, with or without a pillow top?
Avocado pillowtop will be softer than the Saatva firm. I like Avocado better.
We bought the Lytton Sleep Comfort Firm, but we are finding that it is too soft and not firm enough for us. I’m wondering if we were to switch to Avocado, would you recommend getting the pillow top? Can’t decide if that would still end up being too soft for us, or if it’s a totally different story since it’s latex instead of foam.
Can you compare Avocado pillow top with Wink bed eco cloud and ideal sleep latex dunlop or talalay I am a side sleeper first then back then the other side side sleep. The sleep number i10 causes great pain in my shoulders neck and hips. I hope avocado is not too firm after several weeks
My wife and I love our Avocado non-pillowtop. You can purchase a pillowtop cover later from Avocado if needed. The non-pillowtop version is rated ahead of the pillowtop version in CR.
We just got the Oceano and the Crystal Cove for our kids and while I think both mattresses are very comfortable and well made I am looking for the same comfort with just a little more support and green standards. I am 145 lbs and a back and side combo sleeper. I am considering the Avocado with pillow top but afraid it will be too firm. Also looking at Wink. I would like the Cedar but was trying to make a king with two twin xl and they don’t have that size. I like the latex for the plush feeling without sinking in. What do you recommend? Thank you!
