How a Sleep Number actually works
Every Sleep Number bed is an air bed at heart: an air chamber under each side of the mattress, inflated or deflated to a firmness number from 0 to 100, with foam and (on the newer models) micro-coils layered on top. Couples get two independent numbers on any size Queen and up.
What separates the 2026 models is what sits above the air: foam only on the ComfortMode beds, thicker targeted foam on ComfortNext, micro-coils in the Tri-Brid Lux and Ultra, and active temperature hardware in the Climate collection. Everything else — the pump, the numbers, the trial — is shared.

How it performs, category by category
Micro-coil feel
Sleep Number lists 1.5-inch individually wrapped microcoils within the mattress’s midsection. They add a different support component above the air chambers, but we have not measured their responsiveness against other models.
Lower-back support
The manufacturer describes targeted relief for the lower back as well as the hips, shoulders and knees. How that feels depends on your body and air setting; we have not measured lumbar support on this model.
Pressure relief
Side sleepers can adjust the air setting and compare shoulder and hip pressure in person. We have not tested a pressure map for this model, so we cannot guarantee a comfortable fit.
Cooling
Sleep Number lists cooling materials and microcoils, but we have not tested whether Lux sleeps cooler than ComfortMode. Lux does not offer the active temperature control of the Climate collection.
Motion isolation
Separate adjustable chambers can help partners choose different firmness settings. Test movement together; we have not measured Lux motion isolation against ComfortNext.
Edge support
Try sitting and lying near the edge. Sleep Number places the microcoils in the midsection, and we have not measured or ranked this model’s perimeter support.

- Versus ClimateCool: $1,500 more and the only functional difference that matters is active cooling.

Frequently asked questions
Where are the microcoils?
Sleep Number says the ComfortNext Lux uses 1.5-inch individually wrapped microcoils within the mattress midsection; the Ultra uses 2.4-inch microcoils. They are not described as a perimeter coil system. See the manufacturer’s component guide.
What should I know about returns and the base?
Sleep Number’s 100-night mattress trial requires authorization through customer service. Its returns policy says a one-time exchange makes the replacement final sale with no new trial; adjustable and FlexFit bases are final sale. Delivery and return charges can affect the refund. Check all charges and exclusions before ordering.
What happens if the bed feels as though it is losing air?
Sleep Number recommends checking for loose hose connections or kinks and confirming the pump’s power connection. Contact the manufacturer if the issue persists. The app controls firmness; a compatible smart remote is sold separately.
What is Sleep Number’s Tri-Brid design?
It combines responsive micro-coils, foam and the dual air chambers in one build. Sleep Number introduced it on the ComfortNext Lux and ComfortNext Ultra in 2026.

Micro-coils fix the flat, floaty feel that put people off air beds, lumbar support closes the last comfort gap, and you keep the full app feature set. If you are not buying a Sleep Number specifically for temperature control, this is the model to buy.
