Sealy Paterson II Review: The Posturepedic Plus Hybrid Sweet Spot?

The Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid Paterson II is a 13-inch hybrid built around gel memory foam, PrecisionFit coils and a reinforced DuraFlex coil edge. It sits below Sealy’s more expensive Elite Hybrid models such as the High Point II, making it one of the more interesting choices for shoppers who want a traditional retail hybrid without moving into flagship pricing.

Current specifications checked October 2026. Sealy and retailers sometimes use different availability, pricing and merchandising for Paterson II variants.

First: make sure you are looking at the Hybrid Paterson II

This is more important than it sounds. The Paterson II name is also used on Posturepedic Plus Spring mattresses. Those are not the same construction as the Hybrid reviewed here. The Hybrid has a smooth, unquilted-style top and a thicker memory-foam comfort system over encased coils. The Spring versions use a more traditional quilted construction and can come in additional firmness/top configurations.

When comparison shopping, verify the words “Posturepedic Plus Hybrid” in the model name rather than buying based on “Paterson II” alone.

Who should buy the Paterson II Hybrid?

Paterson II is a strong fit for shoppers who want more contouring than a traditional innerspring but do not want the heavier, slower sensation of an all-foam mattress. The coils keep the surface responsive while the gel memory foam gives the shoulders and hips room to settle.

Best reasons to consider it

  • You want a hybrid from a major traditional mattress brand.
  • You prefer some memory-foam contouring without a deep all-foam sink.
  • You share the bed and want individually encased coils to reduce motion spread.
  • You care about usable edge support.
  • You want something below Sealy Elite Hybrid pricing.
  • You plan to use an adjustable base.

Reasons to look elsewhere

  • You want the strongest cooling package Sealy offers.
  • You want an ultra-plush luxury feel with a very deep comfort stack.
  • You prefer a classic bouncy innerspring with minimal foam.
  • You are comparing two Paterson II listings without confirming whether one is Spring and one is Hybrid.

Paterson II Medium vs Soft vs Firm

Firmness availability can vary by retailer, but the basic choice is straightforward.

FeelBest starting point forWhat to expect
SoftSide sleepers, pressure-sensitive sleepersDeeper cushioning and more cradle around shoulders and hips
MediumBack sleepers, combination sleepers, many couplesBalanced contouring with a more neutral, medium-firm feel
FirmStomach sleepers and people who prefer to stay on top of the bedLess sink with a flatter, more supportive surface

For most undecided shoppers, Medium is the safest place to start. Dedicated side sleepers who routinely feel shoulder pressure should consider Soft. Stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers who dislike hip sink should start with Firm where available.

What’s inside the Paterson II Medium?

Current retailer specifications for the 13-inch Medium list the following comfort and support components:

  • MoistureProtect stretch-knit cover with Surface-Guard technology
  • 2 inches of ComfortSense Premium Gel Memory Foam
  • 1 inch of SealyComfort Gel Foam
  • 1 inch of SealySupport Gel Foam Firm
  • 966-coil Posturepedic Plus Support System in queen
  • PrecisionFit center support technology
  • DuraFlex Coil Edge

The construction makes Paterson II more substantial than Sealy’s entry-level hybrids without moving into the deeper comfort package and more aggressive cooling found in the Elite line.

How the Medium should feel

The Medium is designed to feel supportive first and cushioned second. The memory foam should give noticeable contouring, but the coil core keeps the mattress from feeling dead or difficult to move on. That makes it a reasonable compromise for couples who have different sleep positions and for combination sleepers who change positions during the night.

Because we have not yet run this exact generation through Yawnder’s standardized pressure, motion, temperature and edge-support protocol, we are not assigning scores based on manufacturer language or another site’s testing.

Motion isolation, edge support and cooling

Motion: Paterson II uses individually encased coils rather than an interconnected spring unit. That design generally helps localize movement. Retailer materials specifically market motion separation as a feature, but we will add a measured Yawnder motion-transfer result only after instrument testing.

Edge support: DuraFlex uses coils around the perimeter rather than relying solely on a foam rail. That is useful for couples who sleep close to the edge and for anyone who sits on the side of the bed regularly.

Cooling: MoistureProtect is more about moisture management than active cold-to-touch performance. The Hybrid’s coil cavity also allows more airflow than an all-foam bed, but if cooling is a top priority, Sealy’s Elite Hybrid line adds a more aggressive cooling package.

The Paterson II keeps a relatively streamlined 13-inch profile for a premium retail hybrid.

Paterson II vs Medina II

The Sealy Medina II Spring is the simpler, more responsive option below Paterson II. Choose Medina II if you want less memory-foam sink and a lower price; choose Paterson II if you want a true Plus Hybrid with more contouring and pressure relief.

Paterson II vs Brenham II

The Sealy Brenham II is the next step up from Paterson II into Sealy’s Elite tier. It adds a more premium cooling/support package and expands the choice to Spring and Hybrid constructions. Paterson II remains the stronger value play when price is the priority.

Paterson II vs High Point II

The Sealy High Point II is the more premium mattress. High Point II is 14 inches tall, adds a more advanced cooling treatment and uses a deeper comfort package. Paterson II is simpler and substantially easier to justify when price matters.

If both feel good in person, we would not automatically pay the High Point premium. The upgrade is most defensible for hot sleepers and people who clearly prefer its thicker comfort package.

Paterson II vs Ridge Crest II

Yawnder’s Ridge Crest II review covers a retailer-specific Sealy model that has historically generated a lot of search interest. Paterson II is easier to place in Sealy’s current national lineup. If you are comparing them, ignore the marketing names and compare the exact comfort layers, coil system, firmness, return policy and real checkout price.

Price and value

Current retailer listings put queen Paterson II Hybrid Medium and Soft models around the low-$1,000 range, with examples near $1,199. Prices can move with promotions, store policies and firmness availability. The value proposition is strongest when Paterson II is meaningfully less expensive than an Elite Hybrid while still giving you the foam-over-coil feel you want.

When buying directly from Sealy, current terms on this family list a 90-night in-home trial and a 10-year limited warranty. Retailer trials and return fees are different, so check the seller’s policy rather than assuming the Sealy-direct terms apply everywhere.

Common questions

Is the Sealy Paterson II a hybrid? There are both Hybrid and Spring mattresses using the Paterson II name. This review covers the Posturepedic Plus Hybrid Paterson II.

How thick is the Paterson II Hybrid? Current Hybrid models are listed at 13 inches.

How many coils are in the Paterson II? Current queen-size retailer specifications list 966 coils. Coil count changes with mattress size.

Is the Paterson II good for side sleepers? Soft is the most logical choice for dedicated side sleepers because it allows more shoulder and hip compression. Medium can work for combination sleepers who spend only part of the night on their side.

Is the Paterson II good for back sleepers? Medium is the strongest starting point for most back sleepers because it balances contouring with a more stable lumbar feel.

Can Paterson II go on an adjustable base? Yes. Current specifications list the Hybrid as adjustable-base compatible.

What is the warranty? Current specifications list a 10-year limited warranty.

Yawnder’s bottom line

Paterson II is a compelling middle ground in Sealy’s lineup. It gives you the important hybrid ingredients—real memory foam, individually encased targeted coils, a reinforced coil edge and adjustable-base compatibility—without automatically pushing into Elite Hybrid pricing. Start with Medium if you are unsure, Soft for dedicated side sleeping, and Firm if you want less sink. The biggest shopping mistake is confusing the Hybrid with one of the Spring Paterson II models, so verify the construction before comparing prices.
