Original Purple mattress review: does the GelFlex Grid really feel different?
My takeaway from the original Purple: It doesn't have the slow, sinking response of ordinary memory foam. The flexible grid buckles locally around heavier contact points while holding more firmly where weight is spread across a larger area. That gives you a buoyant, unusual surface that some sleepers love and others find too distinctive. Our preserved testing below describes the original generation, not a new independent lab test of every Purple mattress now on sale.

What my original testing can tell you
Pressure relief: The grid compresses under shoulders and hips in a way unlike traditional foams, but different body weights feel it differently. A lighter side sleeper may not engage the same amount of grid compression that a heavier sleeper does. Ease of movement: I found the more responsive surface easier to roll across than very slow-moving foam. Motion: The grid and underlying foam damp some disturbance, but it is not a reason to promise zero partner movement. Cooling: the open grid creates airflow channels, yet actual sleep temperature also depends on the sheets, protector, room and sleeper. We did not publish a new instrumented thermal result for the current five-model range.
Who should try a Purple before buying?
Side sleepers: Spend time checking pressure at the outer shoulder and hip. If either stays lifted against the grid, evaluate another softness or thicker model. Back sleepers: Check whether the waist stays supported while the hips settle; the grid shouldn't let the pelvis feel suspended or twisted. Stomach sleepers: Look for hip support and avoid choosing only by the word “cooling.” Couples: each partner should test their side of the bed because differing body weight changes how far the grid compresses.
My advice: Choose by the exact current Purple product name first, and treat Yawnder's archived observations as useful construction and feel evidence—not automatically interchangeable numeric scores. Purple Mattress Review: Original Grid Testing & Real-World Context Restored
The Original Purple Mattress.
The Purple review still had substantial content, but its backup was far larger and included the history of Yawnder’s hands-on testing of the original grid mattress.
What makes Purple different
Purple’s defining feature is its elastic grid comfort layer. Unlike memory foam, the grid buckles under concentrated pressure and snaps back almost instantly, creating a feel that is both contouring and highly responsive.
Pressure relief without slow foam
The grid can collapse at the shoulder/hip while staying more supportive under broader areas of the body. That produces a sensation unlike either traditional springs or memory foam.
Airflow
Because much of the comfort layer is open space, air can move through the grid more freely than through solid foam. Cooling was one of the strongest practical advantages we observed across Purple models.
Motion and bounce
Purple has noticeable bounce because the grid recovers so quickly, yet motion can still be reasonably contained because each section of the grid flexes independently.
Why model depth matters
The amount of grid changes the feel dramatically. Thicker-grid models such as the old Purple 4 were much plusher and deeper-contouring than the original Purple, so model-specific testing matters.
Purple’s current Essential, Restore/Premium and Rejuvenate/Luxe-style collections differ from the original lineup. Use this page for the core grid behavior and link into the model-specific reviews for current choices.
