Purple Plus Review: The Grid, Now Actually Comfortable for Side Sleepers
The original Purple Mattress had one flaw: side sleepers over 150 lb bottomed out on the GelFlex Grid. The Purple Plus fixes it with 2 inches of comfort foam under the grid. Everything Purple fans love — the buoyant, no-heat, instant pressure relief — now with a hug.

Quick take
- Best for: Side and combo sleepers 140–230 lb who want Purple‘s grid without bottoming out.
- Feel: Medium (~6/10) — grid on top of foam, instant response
- Height: 11 inches
- Price: ~$1,999 queen (frequent 20–30% promos)
- Trial / warranty: 100 nights / 10 years
GelFlex Grid — the actual innovation
The GelFlex Grid is a 2-inch layer of hyper-elastic polymer molded into thousands of columns. Under low pressure (your calves, thighs) it stays upright and pushes back. Under high pressure (shoulder, hip) the walls buckle sideways, letting that body part settle without transferring load anywhere else. No other mattress does this — memory foam compresses, latex rebounds, but only the Purple grid buckles.

Plus vs original Purple — pick correctly
The original Purple Mattress is 9.25″ and puts the grid on a hard base. Great for back sleepers under 150 lb, brutal for side sleepers over 175 lb. The Plus adds foam under the grid, so heavier side sleepers get the shoulder cradle without hitting bottom. If you’re a side sleeper, always pick the Plus over the original.
Temperature — Purple‘s actual superpower
The grid is 60% open air. No memory foam layer trapping heat. This is genuinely the coolest-sleeping mattress in its price range — noticeably cooler than a Tempur-Adapt, cooler than a Saatva Classic. If cooling is your #1 problem, Purple is the answer.
Motion isolation and edge
Motion isolation is decent but not class-leading — the grid transfers a small amount of movement. Edge support is weak; sitting on the edge to put on shoes, the grid buckles. Combo sleepers won’t care; if edge stability matters, look at the Restore Hybrid instead.
Pros & cons
Pros
- Coolest-sleeping mattress at this price
- Instant pressure relief — grid buckles under shoulder/hip
- Fixes the original Purple‘s side-sleeper problem
- 100-night trial + 10-year warranty
- Ships compressed to your door
Cons
- Grid feel is polarizing — try before you commit
- Weak edge support
- Heavier than the original Purple
- Not a great fit for stomach sleepers over 200 lb
Verdict
The Purple Plus is the best entry point to the Purple lineup for most people. Cooler than any Tempur, more pressure-relieving than any Saatva at this price, and priced under $2,000 in most promos. If you sleep hot or have shoulder pain, buy it. If you want a traditional innerspring feel, don’t.
