What actually stops motion

Three things decide it. Construction comes first: memory foam and latex absorb energy, while pocketed coils isolate it far better than the connected innerspring units in older beds. Thickness comes second — a taller comfort layer has more material to swallow movement before it reaches the other side. Third is the perimeter: a bed with weak edge support lets you roll toward the middle, which creates the movement in the first place. Frequently asked questions

Is memory foam always better for motion isolation?

Usually, but not always. A well-built pocketed-coil hybrid with a thick foam comfort layer can match a foam bed, and it will sleep cooler and feel more supportive at the edges. Our top-scoring beds include both types.

Will a mattress topper fix motion transfer?

A 2–3 inch memory foam or latex topper genuinely helps, and it’s the cheapest fix if your current mattress is otherwise fine. It won’t rescue a sagging bed — once the support layer has broken down, the movement comes from the mattress flexing, not the surface.

Does a split king solve it?

Two separate mattresses on one base eliminates cross-bed motion almost entirely, which is why we recommend it for couples with very different schedules. The downside is the gap in the middle.
