Feel and firmness
ProAdapt: The all-foam models use TEMPUR material that slowly conforms around the body. Many shoppers appreciate that close contour; others find it harder to change position than on a more responsive surface. The Medium Hybrid combines TEMPUR material with coils, so do not assume it feels identical to the all-foam versions.
Sleep Number: Adjustable chambers let you change the support setting rather than choose a single fixed firmness at purchase. The comfort layers above the chambers still contribute to the surface feel. The older i8 described in this article’s earlier version used this foam-over-air approach; the feel of a current ComfortNext model should be judged on its own.
Which one suits your sleep style?
Side sleepers: Check that your shoulder and hip can settle comfortably without feeling jammed. Try the ProAdapt Soft or Medium and compare them with the specific Sleep Number model and setting that feels right to you. Back and stomach sleepers: Pay attention to support under the hips and ease of breathing; a firmer setting or model may be useful, but the right level is individual.
Combination sleepers: Roll over several times. If the slow response of all-foam TEMPUR feels restrictive, try the hybrid or an adjustable-air bed. Couples: A dual-chamber Sleep Number setup can let partners choose different firmness settings. A ProAdapt may appeal to a couple who prefer the same fixed feel and want the contour of memory foam.
Motion, cooling and maintenance
Motion: Dense memory foam can absorb movement; an air bed’s feel and movement depend on its comfort layers and settings. We cannot establish a winner without a comparable test of the exact models and sizes. Test together by getting in and out of bed.
Cooling: ProAdapt has a cool-to-the-touch cover, while Sleep Number models use different comfort materials and some offer additional temperature features. A cool cover or an air chamber does not prove either mattress will sleep cooler for you. Bedding and room temperature also matter.
Maintenance: A Sleep Number system has air chambers, hoses and a pump; connected features may depend on compatible controls and Wi-Fi. A ProAdapt mattress does not use an air pump, though an optional powered base adds its own components. Ask about parts, warranty coverage and service costs before purchase. Sleep tracking is informative, but it is not a diagnosis.
What happened to the Sleep Number i8?
The earlier version of this comparison focused on the i8 360 Smart Bed. Sleep Number still publishes support for i8 and other 360 beds purchased in prior years. Its newer ComfortNext collection includes ComfortNext, ComfortNext Lux and ComfortNext Ultra. These are different models: do not assume a new ComfortNext has the same layers, price or feel as an older i8.
Sleep Number describes ComfortNext mattresses as using adjustable air chambers, app control and Responsive Air; Lux and Ultra also include microcoils. Check the exact size and model for dual-side adjustment, included controls, connectivity and available base features.
Compare the complete price
Ask each seller for the final cost of the same mattress size, including the foundation or adjustable base, delivery, setup, taxes and any removal fee. Add any remote or accessories you need. Promotions change; older list prices are not reliable quotes.
For a simple five-year budgeting comparison, divide the total purchase price by five. For example, a $4,000 purchase works out to $800 per year before financing, service or replacement costs. This is arithmetic, not a prediction that the mattress will last five years or that either brand will cost less to own.
Trials, returns and warranties
Tempur-Pedic direct: Eligible mattresses purchased directly online, by phone or at a Tempur-Pedic flagship store have a 90-night trial. Tempur-Pedic recommends trying the mattress for at least 30 days, and lists a $175 plus tax return or exchange fee. Retailer policies can differ; foundations and most adjustable bases are excluded.
Sleep Number: Its buying guide describes a 100-night mattress trial and a 30-night adjustment period before a return or one-time exchange. Sleep Number’s returns page lists adjustable bases as final sale and says exchanged items do not receive a new trial. Ask about delivery, pickup and any return charges for your order.
Read the warranty for the exact mattress, base and purchase date. Coverage and exclusions differ, and a warranty is not a promise of how long a mattress will feel comfortable.
Who should consider each?
- Tempur-ProAdapt: You like a slower, contouring feel and are comfortable choosing a fixed firmness at purchase.
- Sleep Number: You want to change firmness, share a bed with someone who prefers a different setting, or value the compatible connected features.
