Saatva Firmness Guide — Plush Soft vs Luxury Firm vs Firm

Picking the wrong Saatva firmness is the #1 reason for returns. Here’s how to choose between Plush Soft (3), Luxury Firm (5–7), and Firm (8) — by sleep position and body weight.

Updated April 2026 · Yawnder Sleep Lab

The Saatva Classic comes in three firmness options, and 80% of buyers default to “Luxury Firm” because it’s the popular pick. That’s a mistake for half of them. Here’s the actual decision framework after sizing thousands of customers in our Encinitas showroom.

The 30-second cheat sheet

  • Plush Soft (3/10): Side sleepers under 200 lb. Couples where one partner has shoulder pain.
  • Luxury Firm (5.5–6.5/10): Combination sleepers, back sleepers, most people 130–230 lb. The safe default.
  • Firm (8/10): Stomach sleepers, back sleepers over 230 lb, or anyone who wants a hotel-firm feel.

The three Saatva Classic firmnesses, decoded

Plush Soft (3/10)

Saatva‘s softest option — the Euro pillow top compresses easily and you sink in noticeably at the shoulder and hip. Think hotel-luxury feel. Best for side sleepers under 200 lb who need pressure relief and combination sleepers who change positions often.

Skip if: You’re a stomach sleeper, you’re over 230 lb, or you have lower-back pain. The give is too much for spinal alignment.

Luxury Firm (5.5–6.5/10) — the bestseller

The “everyone’s mattress.” Medium-firm with enough cushion to feel plush at first contact, but enough lumbar support that back and combination sleepers stay aligned. Around 80% of Saatva sales are Luxury Firm — it’s the safe choice when you don’t know what you want.

Skip if: You’re a strict side sleeper under 200 lb (too firm at the shoulder), or a strict stomach sleeper (not firm enough at the hips).

Firm (8/10)

Truly firm — minimal sink at the hips and shoulders. Designed for stomach sleepers (who need a flat surface to keep the lower back from arching) and back sleepers over 230 lb who otherwise sink too deep. Also chosen by Europeans accustomed to firmer beds.

Skip if: You’re a side sleeper. The Firm version causes shoulder pressure for almost everyone in this position regardless of body weight.

What about the other Saatva models?

Saatva Loom & Leaf — Relaxed Firm or Firm

Two firmness options, both memory-foam-based. Relaxed Firm (~6/10) is the side-sleeper version; Firm (~8/10) is for back/stomach sleepers and heavier bodies. There’s no “Plush” Loom & Leaf — if you want soft memory foam, look elsewhere.

Saatva HD — Medium-Firm only

One firmness setting (~7/10). Designed for sleepers 230–500 lb where firmness perception is different — what feels Medium-Firm to a 280-lb sleeper would feel Firm to a 150-lb sleeper.

Saatva Solaire — adjustable 1–50

Air-chamber design with 50 firmness levels via remote. Dual-zone for couples (each side independent). The right answer if you and your partner disagree on firmness.

Don’t skip: the height question (11.5″ vs 14.5″)

The Saatva Classic comes in two heights. 11.5″ is the standard and what we recommend for most people — better for getting in/out of bed and pairs well with adjustable bases. 14.5″ is taller (more cushion = slightly softer feel) and better for taller people or those who like a “hotel bed” aesthetic. Same firmness label means roughly the same firmness; the 14.5″ just feels marginally more cushioned.

Side note: Saatva‘s 365-night trial

One reason firmness is a lower-stakes decision with Saatva than with most brands: the 365-night home trial. If you guess wrong, you have a full year to swap firmness or return the mattress. There’s a $99 transportation fee for returns/exchanges, but no restocking fee. Few competitors match this trial length.

FAQ

What firmness is the Saatva Luxury Firm exactly?
Around 5.5–6.5 on the 1–10 scale. Saatva officially calls it 5–7. It feels medium-firm — supportive but with noticeable cushion at first contact.
Can I exchange firmness if I pick wrong?
Yes. You have 365 nights to exchange or return. Exchange/return fee is $99; no restocking fee.
Plush Soft vs Loom & Leaf for side sleepers?
Loom & Leaf Relaxed Firm has slightly better pressure mapping at the shoulder, but Plush Soft has better airflow. If you sleep hot, Plush Soft. If motion isolation matters more, Loom & Leaf.
Is the Saatva Firm too firm for back sleepers?
For back sleepers under 230 lb, yes — Luxury Firm is better. For back sleepers over 230 lb, the Firm version is correct.
Does the height (11.5″ vs 14.5″) affect firmness?
Slightly. The 14.5″ feels marginally softer because there’s more cushion to compress before reaching the coils. Same firmness label, same coil system underneath.
