Best Orthopedic Pillows

Without the right bedding, it is almost impossible to get a good night’s sleep. And without sleep, our whole life becomes bleak. Most people can survive without eating for as long as 30 days, but going without sleep easily takes a toll on us (the world record for going without sleep is of 11 days). That’s because our bodies cannot work 24-hours. It needs a few hours to rest and recharge every day.

Think of our bodies as a machine that needs to be switched off for a few hours every day else the systems will overload and result in a breakdown. However, when it comes to sleep, the proper kind of environment and bedding are crucial. Not only does the wrong bedding interfere with sleep quality but it also causes aches and pains.

Sometimes we tend to get carried away with all the options in mattresses and duvets and forget about one of the essential items of bedding – the pillows. Most people are not aware that a pillow supports seven important bones of the neck, which hold up the head. When the pillow fails to provide support, the neck is strained and so is the head. Regular pillows are usually of a typical shape, and either too soft or too firm. They do not align with the spine or the neck and can lead to strains and pain.

You not only need a mattress that aligns to the curve of your body but also a pillow that contours to the shape of your neck and spine. A regular pillow doesn’t offer this benefit. That’s why you need to use an orthopedic pillow for better support.

What Is an Orthopedic Pillow?

Contrary to perceptions, orthopedic bedding isn’t solely meant for those with medical problems like arthritis, osteoporosis or spondylosis. Anyone who wants their body to be better supported while they sleep can use orthopedic bedding. There are orthopedic mattresses and orthopedic pillows. Their purpose is the same, but for different parts of the body.

An orthopedic pillow is specially designed to provide and support to the neck spine and head while a person is sleeping or lying down. They are also often used to support other parts of the body, such as the knees, legs, and back. Normal pillows come in a very typical design; they are either rectangular or square and fluffy. They don’t really have any special shape. Orthopedic pillows are distinguishable from their design. They are designed according to orthopedic guidelines to ensure proper placement and provide support to any part of the body.

Pillows have been conventionally made with fiber (such as cotton) or foam, but orthopedic pillows are usually made with memory foam. This is because memory foam is a heat sensitive material and acquires the shape of the part of the body touching it. However, it takes a while to get its original shape back when it’s no longer in use.

Orthopedic pillows are also called therapeutic pillows because they claim to provide relief from a number of problems that interfere with sleep. From a back bad, sore knees, stiff neck, to sleep apnea and snoring, different orthopedic pillows relieve a number of ailments and sleep disorders by providing support to different parts of the body. In fact, there’s a pillow available for almost every part of the body, often used together with orthopedic mattresses and cushions.

Types of Orthopedic Pillows

There are several types of orthopedic pillows, designed according to body shape and use. Some of them are:

Cervical or Contour Pillow

This is a sleep pillow that has a curved design and meant to align to the contours of the head, neck, spine, shoulders, and back when sleeping or lying down. A cervical pillow is one of the most common types of orthopedic pillows, used to relieve different conditions like neck pain, stiff neck, frozen shoulder sore back, respiratory distress, snoring and sleep apnea.

Neck Pillow

Also called a travel pillow, this is something often seen and used on a flight. A neck pillow is shaped like a horseshoe and is designed to fit around the neck to keep the head supported during long hours of sitting up. This pillow is useful because when your head is resting against a seat, it does not get the support that it needs, which can lead to neck pain and stiff neck and shoulders.

Body Pillow

This is a long, curvy pillow designed to support the entire body. A body pillow has curves that support the head, neck, shoulders, and back. A body pillow can be used by anyone who needs better support to be able to fall asleep. However, it is highly recommended for pregnant women because of the support it provides.

Knee Pillow

This is an hourglass-shaped pillow that is placed between the legs or under the knee to support the legs and keep the spine straight. Not only does a knee pillow provide support to the lower back by aligning the spine but also prevents friction between the legs. It is often used to promote blood circulation in the legs.

Lumbar Pillow

This is a half-moon shaped pillow that’s used to support the lower back or the legs. While in a seated position, a lumbar pillow supports the lower back and provides the correct posture. While lying down, it can be used to elevate the legs, or even under the neck for support and massage.

Wedge Pillow

As the name suggests, this pillow is shaped like a wedge. It provides a sloping surface to rest any part of the body. A wedge pillow is one of the most versatile orthopedic pillows because it can be used for any part of the body. It can be used to support the leg and the knees or to support the head, neck, and shoulders in bed. Because a wedge pillow keeps the head inclined, it is often used to relieve respiratory distress, snoring, or sleep apnea, or even to relieve symptoms of acid reflux. Wedge pillows come in a single piece or can also be folded.

Water Pillow

If you want the utmost flexibility, nothing beats a water pillow. Simply fill the pillow with water, and adjust the height as needed. The water contours to the shape of the body and provide the ideal support.

How to Choose An Orthopedic Pillow?

Given the different types of therapeutic pillows, it can be difficult to make the right choice. Even if you do not suffer from any physical ailment or sleep disorder, it can be useful to have an orthopedic pillow at home, for those times when you have a sore back or stiff shoulders or want to keep your legs elevated. But regardless of what you buy it for, an orthopedic pillow should be purchased carefully, keeping certain factors in mind.

The following are a few of the factors to consider when buying an orthopedic pillow.

Budget: It goes without saying that orthopedic pillows are more expensive than ordinary pillows. They can be as low as $50 or as expensive as $200. Even before you set out to look for orthopedic pillows, it is important to have a specific budget because if you don’t, your budget will skyrocket. There are orthopedic pillows available in every price range, so it’s best to stick to a budget to avoid spending more than necessary.

Sleep position: Orthopedic pillows are designed according to the different sleep positions. It is recommended that you choose a pillow designed for the position that you usually sleep in. Side sleeping is the most common position followed by back and stomach sleeping. A body pillow is usually meant for side sleepers while a wedge pillow is better suited to back sleepers.

Support: If you are buying an orthopedic pillow because of any sleep disorder or physical condition, you need to consider which part of your body you want to support with the pillow. For instance, a neck pillow is designed to support the head neck and shoulders, while a lumbar pillow is meant to support the lower back and legs. If you end up buying a neck pillow for your lower back, it is not going to serve the right purpose.

Physical Ailments: Orthopedic pillows are designed to provide general support to the whole body or different parts of the body. But if you already have existing physical conditions, you may need the more specialized type of support. In such a case, an orthopedic expert is able to recommend the best type of pillow.

Material: Both regular pillows and orthopedic pillows are made of a variety of materials. But the most common material used to make therapeutic pillows is memory foam. Not only is memory foam soft and supportive, but their heat sensitivity makes them mold to any shape. Latex is another material used to make orthopedic pillows and is a better option for those who suffer from allergies. Like memory foam, latex also molds to the shape of the body and provides support and alignment. The outer cover of the pillow can be of cotton, viscose, or polyester.

Ease Of Cleaning: Pillows attract dust and can get very dirty if not cleaned regularly. When buying an orthopedic pillow, make sure to choose one that’s easy to clean. You should be able to vacuum clean it or wash it with water. Not all pillows allow this, so if you want to wash your pillow, you should get a suitable material.

Top 5 Orthopedic Pillows

Now that we have looked at the type of therapeutic pillows available, their uses, and the materials they are usually made of, it’s time to discuss the best orthopedic pillows that you can buy. Although there are several companies making several different types of orthopedic pillows, here we talk about the top five among them.

How to Stop Snoring Naturally

Blog Image How to Stop Snoring
Throughout the US about 70 million people suffer from unsound sleep. They don’t necessarily have to suffer from a sleep disorder; poor quality sleep or not getting the necessary hours of rest often has the same effects as a sleep disorder. Blame it on hectic work schedules or an unhealthy lifestyle, but poor sleep quality has been on the rise for the last many years. Some people suffer from chronic insomnia, some have fragmented sleep, while some people stay up because of ambient factors. Yes, believe it or not, but external factors are often responsible for causing unsound sleep. From noisy neighbors to the sound of traffic, to snoring (leading to the question how to stop snoring), various environmental factors are responsible for contributing to disturbed sleep. Sometimes the source of distraction maybe right next to us. We are talking about snoring. At the same time, snoring is both a disorder and a distraction. However, snoring is also more normal than any other sleep issue. In fact, it isn’t considered an issue at all, not until it starts to disturb the people around the snorer. Snoring is a problem that only the people around the snorer are aware of. Once the person is asleep, they do not know if they snore. In some cases, they may refuse to believe that they snore when told by others. It is often embarrassing, and not many like to admit that their snoring keeps others awake at night. Every person snores at some point. They may snore softly when in a deep sleep or when they have a cold. But it isn’t something regular or permanent. Such snoring is also quite tolerable to others around the sleeper. The problem arises when the snoring is loud enough to not only keep the people in the room awake but also disturb the others in the house even through closed doors. This is when snoring is considered a sleep disorder and needs treatment.

What Is Snoring?

Simply put snoring is the result of a blocked air passageway. It generally happens when there is an obstruction to breathing. When a person sleeps the muscles in the body relax. The problem is, in snorers, the throat muscles also relax and block the air passage. This creates obstructed air movement and does not let the person breathe freely. As a result, the strained breathing creates a noise. It is easy to simply brush aside snoring and not consider it a problem at all. But the fact is the sound of snoring can sometimes exceed 100 decibels, which is louder than the sound of a road drill. Even if the person remains unaware of the fact that he or she snores, the loud noise can cause sleep disturbances to others around him forcing them to seek remedies to stop snoring. The loudness of snoring can lead to chronic insomnia and for sleep quality in others sharing the room with the snorer. Snoring is not a problem when it is transient or because of a condition like a cold. It is also more common among men and those above middle age. Habitual snoring affects around 90 million people in the US alone. Children can also sometimes be habitual snorers, but the generally outgrow it as they get older.

What are the Most Common Causes of Snoring?

As already discussed, the primary cause of snoring is obstruction of the air passage. But the obstruction can stem from various causes. Snoring is more an annoyance than anything else. It is not readily seen as a sleep disorder or a health problem. Snoring can often remain undiagnosed, and even though it may not be dangerous for the person, it can lead to various other problems.

Most Common Causes of Snoring

Excess Weight: Overweight or obese people are more at risk for snoring. In fact, more than half of the total number of people who snore are overweight or obese. Any person with a body mass index of 29.9 or above is considered overweight, while a body mass index of 40 and above is considered obese. BMI is not always the sole yardstick for measuring excess weight. Men with a neck circumference of 17 inches or higher are also at risk for snoring. This is because overweight people have thick palates that narrow down the airway and obstruct breathing. This is not really a disorder but more of a lifestyle problem, affecting a vast number of people in the US. Alcohol: Many people are fond of consuming an alcoholic drink after dinner or before bed because they find it relaxing. Indeed, alcohol does have a relaxing effect on the body. Alcohol is known to relax all the muscles of the body including the throat muscles. When throat muscles relax, they block the airway and obstruct breathing. That is the reason why any person with sleep disorders or respiratory troubles should avoid alcohol at least two hours before bedtime. Nasal Problems: Respiratory or nasal problems can often be the reason behind loud snoring. Chronic nasal congestion and deviated nasal septum are one of the biggest physiological reasons behind snoring. Nasal congestion can have a variety of causes including allergies, common cold, sinusitis, environmental irritants, and nasal polyps. The septum is the wall between the nostrils. When it is crooked, it leads to a condition called deviated nasal septum. This causes airway obstruction and prevents normal breathing, leading to snoring. All types of nasal congestion require a medical diagnosis. Sleep Deprivation: Snoring and sleep deprivation are connected in two ways: sleep-deprived people tend to snore more, and those who snore are also usually sleep deprived. When sleep deprived people finally get to rest, they are more likely to snore than others. Sleep Position: The position in which a person sleeps is also a possible reason for snoring. Those who sleep on their back are more likely to snore than those who sleep on the sides or on the stomach. This is because when a person sleeps on the back, the air passage is narrowed down due to the relaxed throat muscles. Those who sleep on their backs and snore loudly may try changing the sleep position to see if there is any improvement.

What Habitual Snoring Can Lead To?

snoring effects Snoring may not always be the problem itself. Throat muscles relax in every person when they sleep, but when it begins to obstruct the breathing, it becomes a problem. When snoring goes undiagnosed, it can lead to other issues. Some of them are: Obstructive Sleep Apnea: In several cases, snoring is a sign of a more serious disorder called obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is of a number of types, but the most common is obstructive sleep apnea, in which the air passage is blocked by the relaxing throat muscles. This not only causes snoring but also makes the breathing stop and start abruptly throughout the night. As a result, the person fails to get proper rest, wakes up with a dry mouth and throat and feels tired throughout the day. Snoring is usually the first sign of obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep Deprivation: When a person snores it means the breathing is obstructed. And when the breathing is obstructed sleep is hampered. When a person fails to breathe normally, it wakes them up several times at night, leading to chronic sleep deprivation in the long run. Inability to Concentrate: Snoring causes sleep deprivation and excessive daytime sleepiness. As a result, concentration and productivity suffer and the risk of accidents at work and on the road also increases. Health Problems: Failing to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night can lead to various health problems including heart disease and the risk of strokes in heart attacks. Insufficient sleep has also been linked to hormonal imbalances and an increase in appetite and weight gain. Sleep Divorce: Relationships are often affected when one of the partners snores. In fact, it isn’t surprising to find couples who have broken up or divorced because one of them was a loud snorer. Although underestimated, snoring is a big enough reason behind the degrading of relationships.

7 Effective Remedies to Stop Snoring

snoring remedies Although snoring can lead to various problems, it isn’t the end of the world. Snoring can often be managed with a few easy remedies. Some of them are:

Changing Sleep Position

Since back sleepers are more likely to snore, the first remedy to try is changing the sleep position. If you are a back sleeper, try sleeping on your side for a change. If that seems difficult in the beginning use a body pillow for help. When you sleep on your side, your throat muscles do not relax into the air passage and do not obstruct the breathing. Many back sleepers who snore have reported a marked improvement when sleeping on the side.

Losing Weight

Most snorers are overweight, and in that case, losing weight is the only option. Although not too easy, maintaining the ideal body weight is one of the most effective ways to stop snoring. Following a proper diet and exercise is the best place to begin. A healthy BMI is between 21 and 25. Anything lower is underweight, and anything higher is overweight. Besides fat-burning exercises, strength training is also helpful in shedding fat, building muscles, and boosting metabolism.

Avoiding Alcohol and Sedatives

Alcohol and sedatives work the same way. They relax the muscles of the body, including that of the throat. When a person consumes alcohol or sedatives before bedtime, they are more likely to snore because the throat muscles relax further under the influence of the sedatives. Habitual snorers who consume alcohol or sedatives before going to bed should avoid them. This can bring about a significant improvement in snoring.

Practicing Better Sleep Hygiene

Snoring can often be a result of sleep deprivation and a lack of sleep hygiene. Maintaining a proper bedtime routine can alleviate most of the problems. Having a fixed sleep schedule, avoiding coffee and nicotine, and taking short naps are some of the ways to bring about quality sleep and reduce snoring.

Changing Pillows

Mattresses, pillows, and sheets house millions of dust mites and allergens. No matter how many times you wash them, they keep trapping dust and allergens. When a habitual snorer sleeps on such pillows and sheets, it causes allergies and adds to respiratory distress, making snoring worse. That is why pillows and sheets should be regularly changed and kept clean all the time. Also, make sure that the pillows keep your head and neck properly supported. If possible, stack two or three pillows to keep your head elevated while you sleep.

Hot Shower

Warmth helps clear blockages in the airway, removes congestion, and ease respiratory distress. Besides, a warm bath or shower will also help you sleep deeper. This could help lessen snoring that starts in the nose. You could also keep a bottle of saltwater rinse in the shower for rinsing your nose out with to open up the nasal passages. Besides taking a hot bath or shower, you may also consider buying a neti pot to clear the nasal passages with a saltwater solution.

Staying Hydrated

When the body is dehydrated, it produces thicker fluids. When your nasal secretions become thick, it blocks the airway and causes snoring. Dehydration can be one of the biggest reasons behind snoring sometimes. There are snoring sprays that prevent the nasal passages from sticking together.  Drinking enough water during the day often reduces snoring in dehydrated people. However, drinking too much water before bedtime isn’t recommended because it will only make you get up for the bathroom.

In Conclusion

The causes and treatment for snoring aren’t easy to determine without a medical diagnosis. There are anti-snoring devices such as Tongue Stabilizing Devices (or TSDs) and mandibular advancement devices that open up the airway, to prevent obstruction. These mouthpieces should always be used under the supervision of a doctor because only a healthcare practitioner will be able to determine the reason behind the snoring and suggest the right treatment options. In the meanwhile, home remedies and sleep hygiene can be tried to alleviate the distress for the snorer and others around. Snoring though may seem innocuous can be an indicator of a serious underlying health condition. It may even be affecting you in ways that might not be apparent – like affecting your sleep quality, diminishing your capabilities to concentrate on work, or even affecting your relationship with your partner. Surgery for Snoring

Several surgical options are available for treating snoring. These procedures are typically considered when conservative methods, such as lifestyle changes or anti-snoring devices, have failed to provide relief. The type of surgery recommended usually depends on the specific cause of the snoring. Some common surgical procedures include:

  1. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP): This procedure involves removing excess tissue from the soft palate and pharynx, which can reduce airway obstruction and alleviate snoring. The uvula may also be removed or shortened during this procedure.

  2. Palatal implants (Pillar Procedure): This minimally invasive procedure involves inserting small polyester rods into the soft palate. The implants stiffen the soft palate, reducing vibrations that cause snoring.

  3. Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP): This procedure uses a laser to remove or reshape the uvula and a portion of the soft palate. The goal is to reduce airway obstruction and decrease snoring.

  4. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) or Somnoplasty: This procedure uses radiofrequency energy to shrink and tighten the soft palate tissue. The process helps reduce airway obstruction and alleviate snoring.

  5. Genioglossus advancement (GA): This surgical procedure involves repositioning a portion of the lower jaw forward. This helps to pull the tongue forward, opening up the airway and reducing snoring.

  6. Septoplasty: This procedure is performed to correct a deviated septum, which can contribute to snoring. By straightening the nasal septum, airflow through the nasal passages is improved, potentially reducing snoring.

  7. Turbinate reduction: This procedure aims to reduce the size of the nasal turbinates, which are structures inside the nose that can become enlarged and obstruct airflow. Reducing the size of the turbinates can improve nasal breathing and potentially reduce snoring.

It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional, such as an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist), to determine the best course of action based on the specific cause of your snoring. Surgery carries inherent risks, and the benefits and potential complications should be carefully considered before pursuing this treatment option.

Why Do Fat People Snore?

Snoring is often more common in people who are overweight or obese, but there are several factors that contribute to this. The primary reason is that excess body fat, particularly in the neck and throat area, can lead to increased pressure on the airways. This additional pressure can partially obstruct the airway, causing vibrations in the surrounding tissues when air is forced through during breathing. These vibrations are what produce the sound of snoring.

Here are some factors that explain why overweight individuals may be more prone to snoring:

  1. Excess fat in the neck and throat: People who are overweight may have extra fat around their neck and throat, which can narrow the airway and make it more prone to collapsing or becoming obstructed during sleep. This increases the likelihood of snoring.

  2. Lower muscle tone: Individuals who are overweight or obese may have decreased muscle tone in the throat and neck, which can lead to increased airway obstruction and vibrations when breathing during sleep.

  3. Sleep position: Overweight individuals often sleep on their back, which can cause the tongue and other soft tissues in the throat to fall back into the airway, partially blocking it and contributing to snoring.

  4. Hormonal factors: Obesity can affect hormone levels in the body, which may contribute to changes in sleep patterns and the likelihood of snoring.

  5. Sleep apnea: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is more common in overweight and obese individuals. This condition is characterized by repeated episodes of partial or complete airway obstruction during sleep, leading to disrupted sleep and frequent snoring.

  1. Dr. Christian Guilleminault: Dr. Guilleminault was a renowned sleep medicine specialist and researcher who made significant contributions to the understanding of sleep apnea and its connection to snoring. He was instrumental in the development of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, which is a widely used treatment for sleep apnea.

  2. Dr. Colin Sullivan: An Australian physician and researcher, Dr. Sullivan is credited with inventing the first continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device for treating obstructive sleep apnea in 1980. This invention revolutionized the treatment of sleep apnea and snoring.

  3. Dr. Meir Kryger: A prominent sleep medicine specialist, Dr. Kryger has contributed extensively to sleep research and is the author of several books on sleep medicine, including the “Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine.” He has conducted research on various aspects of sleep disorders, including snoring and sleep apnea.

  4. Dr. William C. Dement: Known as the “Father of Sleep Medicine,” Dr. Dement was a pioneer in the field of sleep research. He was instrumental in establishing the first sleep disorders clinic at Stanford University and was a founding member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. While his research focused on many aspects of sleep, his work has greatly influenced the understanding and treatment of snoring and sleep apnea.

These doctors and researchers have made significant contributions to the field of sleep medicine, helping to advance our understanding of snoring and related sleep disorders. However, it is essential to recognize that the field of sleep medicine is constantly evolving, and many other researchers and clinicians continue to contribute to this area of study.

It aims to provide a comprehensive resource for those dealing with snoring issues.

These books can provide valuable insights into snoring and related sleep disorders. However, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional if you are experiencing snoring issues, as they can provide personalized guidance on the best course of action based on your specific circumstances.

Sleep Relief: Exclusive Non-Addictive Aid for Better Sleep

Sleep Relief

Sleep Relief from NBI: A Comprehensive Review

Discovering Effective Sleep Solutions

In today’s fast-paced world, achieving a good night’s sleep is becoming increasingly difficult for many. I recently had the opportunity to try Sleep Relief, a sleep supplement developed by NBI, a family-owned company founded by Dr. John Neustadt. Renowned for his extensive research and expertise in integrative medicine, Dr. Neustadt has created formulations grounded in thousands of scientific studies. With a trusted reputation in the industry, NBI stands apart as a brand dedicated to delivering effective health solutions.

The Growing Concern of Sleep Disorders

Sleep-related disorders affect millions globally, driven by factors such as lifestyle changes and inadequate sleep hygiene. Insufficient sleep of 7 to 8 hours each night can pave the way for serious health issues, including heart disease, obesity, and reduced mental clarity. The impact of sleep deprivation is profound, leading many to seek various solutions for better rest.

Historically, people have turned to sleeping pills—the most common solution for those battling insomnia. While they provide quick relief, the addictive nature and potential side effects of these medications present considerable risks. Though once prescribed only by physicians, over-the-counter sleeping pills are now readily available, often leading to increased dependency among users.

As consumer awareness grows, pharmaceutical companies are now developing healthier alternatives. Unlike traditional sleeping pills laden with synthetic chemicals, newer options aim to promote restful sleep gently, without the risk of addiction.

Overview of NBI’s Sleep Relief

Sleep Relief by NBI is positioned as a safer sleep aid crafted from herbal ingredients. The product promises non-addictive relief, allowing users to fall asleep easily and stay asleep throughout the night. But what makes Sleep Relief stand out in a crowded market?

The Backstory on Sleeping Aids

Sleeping aids have been used for centuries, with alcohol and various herbs offering temporary solutions. The evolution of sleep medications began as early as the late 19th century, moving from herbal remedies to formal pharmaceutical compounds like morphine and cannabis, once even prescribed to figures like Queen Victoria for sleep issues.

During the late 20th century, the introduction of over-the-counter options revolutionized sleep aids. Today, melatonin, a hormone critical for regulating sleep, receives considerable attention, along with reimagined formulations that harness the goodness of natural ingredients, reflecting a global trend toward herbal supplements.

Analyzing Sleep Relief: Ingredients and Mechanisms

Sleep Relief utilizes a proprietary bi-phasic, time-release technology, which delivers its ingredients in two stages. This innovative approach allows for immediate effects, helping users fall asleep within 30 to 45 minutes, followed by a sustained release to maintain sleep over four hours.

Key Ingredients in Sleep Relief

1. Melatonin: The supplement contains 1 mg of melatonin, which is crucial for regulating sleep patterns, particularly for those with low natural production.

2. Magnesium: Known for its muscle-relaxing properties, magnesium aids in calming both the body and mind, facilitating a restful state.

3. Amino Acids: Sleep Relief incorporates several sleep-friendly amino acids:
L-Tryptophan: Converts to serotonin and melatonin, promoting mood improvement and better sleep.
L-Theanine: Enhances alpha brain wave activity, helping users fall asleep faster.
Glycine & GABA: Act as calming neurotransmitters, supporting relaxation and rest.

4. Herbs: Notable herbs such as hops, skullcap, ashwagandha, and jujube are included, revered for their adaptogenic and calming properties. NBI uses standardized extracts to ensure consistency and efficacy.

Personal Experience with Sleep Relief

With a recommended serving size of two capsules per night, each bottle offers a 30-day supply. Initially, I started with two caps but found that one was sufficient for me, reflecting its potency.

Previously, I would take 2-3 mg of melatonin to help me fall asleep but would often wake up a few hours later, struggling to return to sleep. Sleep Relief proved a game-changer, significantly reducing nighttime awakenings and providing a seamless night’s rest.

Practical and small in size, the capsules are easy to swallow. With a price tag of $32 for a bottle containing 60 capsules, Sleep Relief emerges as an affordable option. Free from wheat, corn, dairy, and soy, these capsules also lack added colors, preservatives, or flavors, underscoring NBI’s commitment to clean, quality ingredients.

Conclusion: A Reliable Sleep Solution

In a world where rest is constantly compromised, Sleep Relief from NBI presents a promising alternative to traditional sleep aids. Bolstered by Dr. Neustadt’s expertise and a thoughtful formulation, this supplement offers a gentle, effective way to improve sleep without the risks associated with conventional sleeping pills. If you’re seeking a reliable sleep solution, Sleep Relief might just be the answer to reclaiming your much-needed rest.

AmazonBasics Mattress Review

Amazon Basics Mattress Review

Amazon has recently unveiled its own memory foam mattress as part of the AmazonBasics Collection, and for many consumers, it’s becoming a go-to option in the crowded mattress market. I purchased the 12-inch variant, as I have often found that 8-inch mattresses do not provide adequate support, especially for those weighing around 200 lbs. Upon reviewing the AmazonBasics mattress, it’s evident that it leans towards the softer side compared to similar models I have evaluated. With a competitive price point, this mattress certainly stands out among the numerous brands available on Amazon, such as Zinus and Lucid.

Overview of the AmazonBasics Mattress

Exclusively available on Amazon.com, the AmazonBasics Mattress is also Prime eligible, offering quick shipping for those in need of immediate comfort. The mattress features a straightforward cover design—functional without unnecessary embellishments—as you won’t notice it once topped with sheets.

For those who prefer a visual summary, here’s a quick video overview demonstrating what the mattress looks like and its basic features.

How Much Does the AmazonBasics Mattress Cost?

Pricing for the AmazonBasics mattress is impressively low, particularly for the 12-inch model. As of this writing, a queen size is priced at just $260. Here is a snapshot of prices for different thicknesses, but it’s always wise to check the current rates directly on Amazon, especially during promotional events like Black Friday and Prime Day.

| Size | Price |
|————|————-|
| Twin | $X |
| Full | $Y |
| Queen | $260 |
| King | $Z |

Construction of the AmazonBasics Mattress

The construction of the AmazonBasics mattress is where it truly shines. All three models—8-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch—feature the same foam layering system:

Top Layer: A memory foam layer that adapts to the body’s shape and weight, ensuring supportive comfort across various sleep positions.
Second Layer: Contains breathable holes enhancing airflow throughout the mattress, further contributing to a cool sleeping surface.
Third Layer: A wavy foam design that aids in airflow while offering adequate support.
Materials: All foam used in construction is CertiPUR-US Certified, ensuring durability, safety, and environmental products. The top fabric is Oeko-Tex Certified, combining softness with strength.
Dimensions: The 12-inch variant measures 75 by 39 inches and weighs 55.4 pounds, complete with a removable cover for easy washing.

An interesting aspect of the design is the dual-layer convoluted foam base, which aims to enhance comfort while maintaining support.

My Personal Experience with the AmazonBasics Mattress

In my subjective experience, the AmazonBasics mattress is notably softer than many others I have encountered. Weighing 200 lbs., I found it provided satisfactory support. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for stomach sleepers who weigh over 170 lbs., as it may lack the firmness needed for that sleeping position. The 8-inch and 10-inch models might not offer sufficient support for anyone over 200 lbs; despite this, the 12-inch model does the job well at its price point.

To visualize its comfort level, consider a bowling ball—a 14 lb. weight placed on the mattress shows a significant sinkage that illustrates its plush surface. Additionally, I tested the motion transfer of the mattress; it performs well in containing movements compared to traditional spring mattresses, making it a decent choice for couples with varying sleeping patterns.

AmazonBasics Mattress Recommendations

What stands out most about the AmazonBasics mattress is its incredible value. A 12-inch memory foam mattress delivered to your home for $260 is tough to match. However, potential buyers should approach with some caution; if you find that it doesn’t suit your preferences upon trying it, the return process isn’t particularly straightforward and could be more trouble than it’s worth given the low initial cost.

If you’re comfortable with memory foam and are seeking a mattress that is soft yet supportive, I highly recommend giving the AmazonBasics mattress serious consideration. On the other hand, if you prefer a firmer feel, exploring alternatives like the Lucid Hybrid may be prudent. Overall, Amazon did not disappoint with this mattress offering; its astonishing price and comfort make it a worthy contender, especially for those in need of a practical sleeping solution in a temporary or transient living situation.

Sleeping with Pets: Must-Have Tips for Better Sleep!

Sleep with Pets

What You Should Know About Sleeping with Pets

Do you cherish the moments when you can cuddle up with your furry friend as you wind down for the evening? Many pet owners find comfort in having their pets snuggled close while they drift into sleep. However, the practice of sleeping with pets can stir up varied opinions. Some individuals enjoy sharing their beds with their pets, while others prefer to keep their sleeping spaces pet-free. Let’s delve into the dynamics of sleeping with pets and explore its impacts, benefits, and precautions.

The Prevalence of Sleeping with Pets

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 60% of households in the United States are home to pets, with nearly half of these owners sharing their bedrooms with their furry companions. The American Pet Products Association (APPA) National Pet Owners Survey reveals that almost 50% of dogs sleep in their owners’ beds. More specifically, 32% of large dogs, 41% of medium-sized dogs, and an impressive 62% of small dogs enjoy this level of closeness. Cats aren’t far behind, with 62% of them sleeping with adults and 13% with children.

Is It Healthy to Share Your Bed with Pets?

The question arises: is it safe and healthy to share your bed with your pet? While studies suggest some benefits, experts advise caution, particularly for young children. The Mayo Clinic conducted research involving 40 healthy adults, discovering that those with dogs in their rooms enjoyed a sleep efficiency of 83%. However, those who allowed their dogs to sleep in bed experienced slightly lower sleep efficiency at 80%. Despite this minor difference, an efficiency rate of 80% is still deemed satisfactory, indicating that co-sleeping with dogs may not heavily disrupt sleep patterns.

For individuals with asthma or pet allergies, it’s prudent to keep pets out of the bedroom to avoid exacerbating symptoms. Utilizing a HEPA filter can provide a temporary respite, allowing your body time to recover from allergens. While many are reluctant to separate from their pets, allergy shots can help increase tolerance to pet dander. If allergies aren’t a concern, sharing your bed with your pet could enhance your sleep experience without significant repercussions.

Can Pets Enhance Sleep Quality?

If you find yourself struggling with sleep, sleeping with your pet may offer more than just comfort. Experts suggest that the rhythmic breathing and warmth of a pet can be soothing, often creating an atmosphere that helps individuals with insomnia. Many claim that their pets provide a more effective sleep aid than pharmaceutical options, making their presence in bed almost indispensable.

Considerations for Children Sleeping with Pets

Just like adults, children often yearn to cuddle up with their furry friends. However, experts caution against allowing children aged six or younger to sleep alone with pets. It’s essential for parents to assess their child’s capability to handle the responsibility of co-sleeping. Signs of immaturity, such as neglecting the pet’s needs or engaging in rough play, indicate that the child may not be ready. Monitoring interactions between pets and young children ensures that both parties feel safe and comfortable.

Although fears of cats smothering infants exist, these are largely unfounded. Most cats show little interest in moving infants. Nonetheless, it remains wise to keep pets away from newborns, particularly those under three months, who have vulnerable immune systems.

The Many Benefits of Sleeping with Pets

If you and your pet maintain good health, sharing your bed can bring a host of advantages:

Security: Many individuals feel a heightened sense of safety when they sleep with their dogs, providing comfort during vulnerable moments.

Warmth and Comfort: Pets exude warmth, often aiding those with sleep disorders like insomnia. The soothing presence of a pet can create a tranquil sleeping environment. However, to optimize sleep quality, it’s best to maintain a cooler room temperature.

Reduced Stress: Pets can offer emotional support to those battling anxiety or depression. Their calming presence can help mitigate anxious thoughts that often hinder sleep. Just petting your furry friend releases oxytocin, a hormone that promotes feelings of well-being.

Strengthened Bond: Sharing your bed can foster a deeper emotional connection, similar to what one experiences with a human partner. Pets thrive on companionship, and sleeping together enhances feelings of intimacy and security.

Choosing the Right Mattress for You and Your Pet

If co-sleeping has become a regular part of your night routine, investing in a suitable mattress is crucial. The market today features various pet-friendly mattresses designed for those who sleep with their pets. Look for options that facilitate easy cleaning and allergy management, ensuring your shared space remains comfortable and hygienic.

Ultimately, sleeping with pets can be both comforting and beneficial—provided you and your furry companion are in good health. With the right precautions and a comfortable setup, you can enjoy the warmth and companionship of your beloved pet each night. Embrace the joy of sleeping with pets while ensuring both your comfort and well-being are prioritized.

Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet: Your Must-Have Travel Savior

Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet

Traveling, whether for business or leisure, often culminates in the same universal desire: rest. After a long day of meetings or sightseeing, your sole wish is to slip into a comfortable bed. But what happens when you encounter less-than-desirable bedding at your destination? The excitement of rest can quickly turn to dread when hotel sheets appear questionable.

The dismay is palpable when you discover that hotel linens haven’t been washed, or worse, that uninvited guests—like bed bugs—seem to have made themselves at home. A recent investigation by Inside Edition revealed that three out of nine hotels fail to change their sheets between guests, a shocking statistic that highlights a serious issue in hospitality.

What can weary travelers do to safeguard their sleeping environment? Many resort to packing their own sheets, but traditional bed linens are often bulky and weighty, taking up valuable suitcase space. Fortunately, there’s a smarter alternative: the Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet.

Why Choose the Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet?

Founded by Nichole Alden, Brave Era emerged from her own frustrating experiences in hotels lacking clean bedding. As a woman pursuing her musical dreams, she realized that travelers needed a dependable solution—and thus, the Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet was born.

The Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet is not only a versatile travel accessory; it’s quickly become a beloved choice for travelers who value clean and comfortable bedding on the go.

Unmatched Comfort and Construction

The standout feature of the Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet is its luxurious material—100% natural mulberry silk. But why silk? Beyond its divine softness and smoothness, silk is a natural fiber that provides several important benefits. It’s hypoallergenic, allowing sensitive individuals to rest easy without worrying about sneezing or reacting to materials like polyester or satin.

Measuring 6’6 in length, this travel sheet is accommodating, even for taller individuals. The attention to detail in its design ensures durability and unparalleled comfort. Plus, the ultra-lightweight silk means it packs down to about the size of an iPhone, making it a breeze to carry in your luggage.

Convenience continues with the compact carrying pouch, complete with easy care instructions printed on the back.

Features of the Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet

The Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet is packed with features designed specifically for the modern traveler. Here’s what you can expect:

With available colors like natural white and sharkskin grey, your travel sheet not only functions effectively but also looks sleek.

Investment in Comfort: Pricing

Currently priced at $109.99, the Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet also includes free shipping within the U.S. This investment offers peace of mind and comfort that standard hotel sheets simply cannot match.

Customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many users praising its feel and practicality:

– “The fabric is incredibly soft and cool. It’s comforting to know I’m sleeping in something clean, no matter where I am!”
– Perfect for hosteling when bed quality is uncertain. It’s super lightweight and barely took up any space in my pack!

My Personal Experience with Brave Era

On a recent family trip to Ecuador, I had the opportunity to test the Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet. Most of the hotels were satisfactory, yet one remote location had sheets that left much to be desired. At 6 feet 4 inches tall, I found the sheet ample in length—providing the same cozy feeling as a sleeping bag without the suffocating heat.

Knowing I was enveloped in my clean, safe cocoon helped me relax, allowing for a better night’s sleep. In fact, on our second morning, as we were packing up, my wife spotted a large spider crawling out from the hotel sheets. Thanks to my Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet, I felt secure and protected throughout my stay.

Conclusion

The Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet is more than just a travel accessory; it’s a commitment to ensuring restful nights, no matter where you find yourself. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or an occasional explorer, this product helps maintain your peace of mind, offering luxury, comfort, and cleanliness. If you’re ready to elevate your travel experience, the Brave Era Silk Travel Sheet is your go-to solution for restful nights on the road.

Comfort & Relax Mattress: Stunning Value for Comfort Seekers

Comfort Relax Mattress Review

The Comfort & Relax mattress is a memory foam mattress that is sold exclusively on Amazon. Iwas given one for review to see how it stacks up. It measures 12 inches deep and is made with 3 foam layers. A queen size currently retails for $399 which is an incredible value. It comes shipped in a box and expands fairly quickly so you could sleep on it within about 4-5 hours after opening.

Overview of the Comfort & Relax Mattress

This mattress is made in China which is why I think it can be priced so aggressively. There are hundreds of memory foam mattress on the market now but the Comfort & Relax is a really good value given the construction.

Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect.

Your mattress will arrive in a box like the one below.

Comfort & Relax Box

Upon opening the box I found a couple pillowcases for the pillows you get rolled inside the mattress.

Here’s what it looks like out of the box.

cr out of the box

The picture below shows the pillows inside the mattress. Once you cut open the plastic the mattress and pillows will come to life.

cr pillows

This is what the pillow looks like right after opening the plastic. It fluffs up nicely after about half an hour. You can speed this up by putting in your dryer for about 10 minutes with no heat.

  • 8.5″ Air Cell base foam

My CR Mattress Findings

This mattress is just slightly on the softer end of the spectrum among the other 3 layer memory foam mattresses I have reviewed. Here’s a picture illustrating how much sink you get with the mattress.

The video below shows how much motion transfer you expect with the Comfort & Relax mattress.

The picture below shows the inside of the mattress and each layer.

comfort and relax layers

Here’s a view of how the layers work in terms of edge support and contouring.

comfort and relax insideMY Comfort & Relax Recommendation

If you are looking for an excellent value, its hard to top the Comfort & Relax. There are other really good value brands like Zinus and Lucid but this mattress offers a different firmness. It is firmer than the Zinus Green Tea 12 inch but considerably softer than the Lucid Hybrid.

This mattress is made in China and is probably stored in a warehouse for a considerable amount of time before it gets to you but it didn’t off-gas as much as I expected. When I opened mine, it would have been ready to sleep on after about 4-5 hours.

Comfort and Relax is a good choice for people seeking a slightly softer memory foam mattress that is fairly breathable and still offers good support. The fact that it comes with free pillows and pillowcases is icing on the cake.

YourFacePillow: Stunning Anti-Aging Solution for Clear Skin

Your Face Pillow

Overview of the YourFacePillow

The YourFacePillow is a unique looking pillow that has been created to reduce facial contact with the underlying sleep surface, something that is known to contribute to the appearance of wrinkles and acne. It’s constructed to encourage one to sleep in soldier position or the famous yoga corpse pose. Allowing you to easily sleep on your back, this pillow will keep your neck and your head in an anatomically correct position while you sleep. Unless you decide to sleep on your side with it, it has many promising features. 🙂

Why I Sought Out The YourFacePillow

The YourFacePillow initially caught my interest because I was suffering from the worst acne I had ever experienced in all of my 28 years. I fought with my skin for an entire year, trying to do everything I could to control it. Like some mysterious crime, it was something I was committed to solving. I spent lots of money on various cleaners and creams and I also tore up my face with my own at-home extraction kit. I used it so aggressively that I would later be horrified at how many scars I had left behind. I didn’t realize that at my age, delicate skin scars and folds more easily. After the year of fighting was up and with no improvement in sight, I finally paid a visit to my OBGYN only to find out that the birth control I had been taking to treat my PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) was no longer effective at managing my symptoms. One of those symptoms is painful and inescapable hormonal acne.

Aside from the typical surface area that zits like to occupy, hormonal acne, in particular, is another beast. Typically, it’s known to appear in areas such as the jawline and neck. Described as cystic acne, these types of pimples are often deep under the skin, making them not only painful but difficult to even access (and get rid of). Some don’t even come to a head, meaning there will be an evident bump on the face but no white dot in the center to know that it’s ripe for popping. Some of these pimples can appear and just remain. Eventually, it’s not even a zit anymore, just a raised mark for you to remember it by.

I could have at least considered that my hormones were the cause of the year-long sudden shift in my skin but the daily routine of taking my medication had become an automatic robotic ritual. One that never left any time for thinking. It was easy to neglect my health because I assumed it was already being properly managed.

That year of fighting with my skin, however, has thankfully taught me a lot. I’ve learned a lot about acne and specifically, hormonal acne. I also have come to understand PCOS more intellectually and I’ve educated myself about ways in which the skin can change and age and how to treat it well if one wishes to have a shot at aging gracefully.

It’s also important to consider that how you face your day isn’t all that matters. How and where you end your day is relevant too.

Where you sleep and what you lay your head on accumulates many lovely things over time.  Aside from built-up skin cells, pillows are also great containers for dirt, oil, sweat, bacteria, as well as various allergensdust-mites and pet dander being just one example.

Aside from the respiratory problems that can result from sleeping on an unclean pillow, the cleaner our pillow, the cleaner and clearer of a face we can realistically expect. While slovenly pillows and pillowcases may not be the primary cause of acne, they are known to exacerbate acne and act as a source of irritation. What’s even better than a clean pillow, if there is such a thing? How about not even letting your face make contact with your pillow? I know, I know. I’ve been told I’m idealistic but I know that those with sensitive skin can empathize with my concerns. Sleeping on your back and letting your face relaxwith nothing in its wayusually feels and works best. And that’s why this pillow is awesome.

Construction of the YourFacePillow

yourfacepillow-one-year-review

The YourFacePillow is made with CertiPUR Certified foam. That means that it’s made without PBDEs, TDCPP, TCEP flame retardants, mercury, lead and heavy metals, formaldehyde and phthalates. Known as viscoelastic foam or memory foam, this pillow won’t lose its shape or integrity over time and it’s lightness and breathability makes sure that you never sleep hot. Additionally, as supportive as the foam may be, it’s also incredibly soft, pleasant and comfortable. The pillow itself comes in a hypo-allergenic inner cover and of course, it also comes with a washable bamboo outer cover. There is a satin case available as well however it must be purchased separately.

The YourFacePillow comes in two size variations (Standard and Large) however the dimensions are actually the same for both—the thing that differs is that the Standard version has a slightly lower headrest and the side supports sit more closely together. The Standard size is what the company recommends for most people.

21”X12”x6”

My YourFacePillow Findings

In my YourFacePillow Review video, I provide a comprehensive look at this pillow after using it for almost a year. I discuss what it was like transitioning from being a side sleeper to a back sleeper, the challenges that came with the adjustment, as well as how this effective this pillow is for both the reduction of acne as well as wrinkles.

My YourFacePillow Recommendation

It’s bizarre to think that a pillow can contribute to a more beautiful and radiant face but it’s actually possible. This pillow won’t solve your acne but it will keep you on your back so that your face is correctly positioned to sleep facing straight all through the night. If you can adhere to simply laying on your back, you will see that you have less breakouts and that the skin on your face does rest more proportionately. Some wrinkles may have time to smooth out, especially if they’re a result of improper sleeping positioning. Continue to sleep on your back (until the end of time) as often as possible for the best anti-aging benefits.

For acne sufferers: If you find that you can’t keep up with changing the pillowcase as often as you should (at least 1 to 2x/week), make use of clean towels and clean t-shirts to step in and save the day.

If you typically do not sleep on your back and are looking to gradually adjust positions, keep another pillow to the side as a just-in-case. In the event that you wake up with a stiff neck from accidentally moving in your sleep (and no longer being on your back), you may need to alternate to the second pillow, to help you cope with the neck pain while the knot heals, before returning to using the YourFacePillow again.

Slumber Cloud Cumulus Lightweight Comforter Review

If you’re someone who often wakes up feeling too hot or too cold, the Slumber Cloud Cumulus Lightweight Comforter might just be your solution. As someone who received this duvet for review, I can attest to its unique features that aim to strike the perfect balance between comfort and weight. After all, a good night’s sleep hinges on an ideal comforter—one that adapts to your body’s needs throughout the night.

Why Is a Comforter Essential?

A lightweight comforter serves a vital role in ensuring a restful night’s sleep. If you often find yourself sweating or shivering, the right comforter can make all the difference. Unlike traditional comforters, which can be heavy and unbreathable, modern options like the Cumulus are engineered to provide both warmth and airflow. This means you can wrap yourself up without feeling stifled, making it easier to drift into a deep sleep.

The Cumulus Lightweight Comforter: A New Age Solution

The Cumulus Lightweight Comforter from Slumber Cloud boasts advanced technology designed to regulate your sleeping environment. With its innovative airflow management and temperature adjustment capabilities, it promises to keep sleepers comfortable year-round. Slumber Cloud offers an entire range of bedding products, including mattresses and sheets, which are all designed with the same cutting-edge technology. Their site often features attractive discounts, making it an appealing option for those looking to enhance their sleep experience. Add to that a wealth of positive reviews, and it’s clear why this brand stands out in the competitive bedding market.

The Science Behind the Slumber Cloud Comforter

One of the most compelling aspects of the Cumulus Lightweight Comforter is its use of Outlast technology. According to Slumber Cloud, excess humidity trapped between your body and the covers can lead to discomfort, such as pulling and tugging at your sheets. Outlast technology is designed to stabilize humidity and temperature, creating a comfortable microclimate for sleep. The comforter features a soft polyester fiberfill encased in a breathable 300-thread-count damask cotton cover, striking the perfect balance between weight and comfort while minimizing the risk of overheating.

Sleep Technology at its Finest

What truly sets the Cumulus apart is the patented Outlast technology, originally developed for NASA astronauts. This innovative system relies on thousands of microscopic beads known as Thermocules™. These beads are engineered to absorb excess body heat when temperatures rise and release it when they drop. As a result, the Cumulus comforter helps manage both temperature and humidity effectively. Say goodbye to restless nights spent tossing and turning!

Ease of Care and Maintenance

Another significant advantage of the Cumulus Lightweight Comforter is its user-friendly design. It’s machine washable and durable enough to withstand regular cleaning. Simply follow the care instructions, and you can keep your comforter looking and feeling fresh without any special requirements. This practicality makes it easy to incorporate into your everyday life.

Versatile Design Features

The Cumulus is not only lightweight and efficient; it also features convenient loops for those who opt to use a duvet cover. However, it stands strong on its own and can simply be used as a quilt. Its box stitching ensures that insulation stays evenly distributed, providing consistent comfort across the entire surface.

Conclusion: Your Ideal Sleep Companion

Stunning Innerspring Mattresses: Best Picks for Comfort

Best Inner Spring Mattresses

Old is gold. The innerspring mattress is proof. It has stood the test of time despite the entry of newer technologies and a host of innovations in the mattress market. The mattress has been around since the 1930s, and it is still going strong. Even today, two-thirds of the mattresses bought are innerspring.  Its earlier avatar, the box spring mattress was invented in the late nineteenth century but gave way to the innerspring after ruling the market for almost four decades. The new market entrants have also become popular over time. However, they have not been able to erode the innerspring market share.

Affordability and the tried-and-trusted factor account for the sustained popularity of the innerspring mattresses. This is backed by its suitability for a wide range of sleepers. The innerspring is ideal for stomach sleepers, individuals with back pain, and the high-BMI persons. They are good for persons who over-heat in sleep. This is because they are cooler in nature than the memory foam and latex mattresses.

What Is the Structure of An Innerspring Mattress?

An innerspring mattress is made of three layers:

The Foundation Layer

It is usually made of wool or other cushiony materials. Its basic functions are to provide support and a soft shock-absorbing foundation for the coil structure on its top.

The Coil Compartment

The coil compartment houses the grid of coils. They are usually aligned vertically as well as horizontally. The coil count and thickness vary from brand to brand. Usually, the coils are covered with titanium or steel coating. It gives them extra strength and bounce factor. They also offer better body contouring and pressure relief. These coils are known as Marshall Coils.

The coil compartment is bound with a perimeter coil along the border. It keeps the coils together and retains the shape and firmness. The edge of the grid is reinforced with additional springs or foam material. This prevents the sleeper from falling off the bed.

The Top Layer

This is the comfort layer. Usually, it is made of foam, latex or fiber. It offers the mattress its comfort and cushiony feel.  Sometimes, an intermediate layer separates it from the coil compartment. It prevents the upholstery from getting deformed or sinking due to the pressure of the springs. This layer is made from a tough but padded material that possesses an insulating property.

Does the Coil Count Matter?

Yes and no.

Yes, because the number of springs is directly proportionate to the mattress’s strength, springiness, contour support, and comfort factors. As a general rule, denser coil grids produce better mattress quality.

However, this notion has changed over time. Innovations have made it possible to achieve better results with fewer coils, or even vice versa. Recent developments in the innerspring structure are:

  • Lesser coils with thicker gauge
  • Thinner coil gauge but denser structure
  • Optimum coil count with better coil quality

So, it all depends on the type of coil.

A few points to ponder on the coil count debate:

  • Research has confirmed that most of us sleep on our sides. Now, the side does not have the same profile as the back or front of the body. It is more contoured. Side-sleeping also produces most stress on the pressure points such as the neck, shoulders, and hips. Moreover, the spine is also differently aligned to the bed than in a flat sleeping position. And finally, side-sleeping puts lesser weight on the mattress. Hence, lesser coils with a thicker gauge work better with a majority of sleepers.
  • As for the coil gauge, number 14 which is 1.63 mm thick is considered ideal for modern designs. It is important to note that the lesser the gauge, the thicker the coil thickness. A 12-gauge wire is thicker than a 14-gauge one.
  • Coil count is optimized at 400 or less. Mattresses with increased coil count tend to be uncomfortably
  • Mattress structures which opt for lesser coil count and thicker coils may be good to sleep on in a store. However, they can sag sooner than the other types of coils.

Ultimately, customization is the best policy. Buy a mattress that is best for your type of body and sleeping habit. Do consult the sales staff before taking a final decision.

What Are the Types of Coils Used in Innerspring Mattress?

Manufacturers make fancy claims with marketing jargon. However, it is important to note that basically, there are only four types of coil used in innerspring mattresses. Often times, competing brands use their coil from the same supplier!

Open Coil or Bonnell Coil

This type of coils was used in the buggy seats of during the 19th century. They are still the most common coils used in innerspring mattresses. Bonnell coils are hourglass shaped. They are joined with the neighboring coils by small wire spirals known as helical. Despite their sustained popularity, open coils are being slowly edged out by technologically superior options. Their main drawback is that they lose bounce soon. The mattress sinks from the center or gets deformed at the edges. Also, the springs become creaky and noisy over time.

Offset Coil

This is the next generation of the Bonnell coil. It has a square top as opposed to the circular one of open coils. The coil shape is more cylindrical than the hourglass Bonnell. Although the most expensive coils, Offsets are preferred by discerning manufacturers for their durability.

Pocket Coil

These are also known as independent or Marshal coils.

Pocket coils are springs encased in individual fabric pockets. They are not naked as the other types of coils. This pocket or wrapping gives far superior contouring, weight distribution, and motion constraining properties to the bed. As a result, the mattress hugs the sleeper more closely. There is lesser sinking. And one partner does not get disturbed due to frequent movements of the other.

Pocket coils make good beds for those who move a lot during sleep, and overweight people.

Continuous Coil

As the name suggests, entire rows of coils are made from a continuous wire. They are attached to each other with helicals. Grids made of continuous coils have a lattice layout rather than the conventional rows. The continuous construction helps one coil to share the weight with the neighboring one. In this way, the weight is distributed evenly across the mattress surface. As a result, mattresses don’t deform easily.

Which Are the Top 5 Innerspring Mattresses?

Innerspring mattresses sell the most in the market. The onset of the online era has given a totally new dimension to sales lifecycles. Brands have now shifted from brick-and-mortar outlets to an online sale. Many have adopted the online-offline combined model. The online segment has become more aggressive in its marketing efforts. The reason is simple; the smaller stores have to compete with the giants like Amazon, Walmart, eBay, and a host of other major players. From coupons and vouchers to 0% APR, there is an ever-widening range of benefits offered to the shoppers.

This augurs well for the consumers. However, with a significant increase in brands, there can be a saturation of information and choices. This may lead to loss of focus and distraction from the core requirements. In many cases, marketers with lesser regard for good practices dole out extraordinary schemes. While they attract eyeballs, they may be misleading or plainly dishonest.

The shopper’s confusion and indecisiveness are increased by an interesting market trend. Even the reputed brands are offering so many variants and features. So one is unable to decide which ‘best brand’ to buy!

The market landscape is indeed cluttered, especially the online marketplace.

In due consideration of the market dilemma, a compilation of the top 5 brands is given below. This is to help the consumers make a choice that best suits their needs. However, it is not the final word. Readers may please note:

  • This is not an official compilation prepared or sponsored by an official agency.

Winkbeds

Innerspring is the oldest mattress category. Each brand has included innovations as value additions. Winkbeds stands out in the crowd on four counts:

  • Revolutionary coil zone design; it has a unique coil-on-coil mechanism. It means that Winkbeds have two coil compartments – the first, in the foundation layer and the second in the middle layer.
  • A 2-tier comfort zone at the top which makes the mattress outstanding in terms of comfort, contouring, and bounce.
  • Specialty polyfoams that enhances the mattress quality and performance,

The Winkbeds Mattress Structure

It consists of three layers:

The foundation layer. As mentioned above, Winkbed’s unique foundation layer doubles up as the first coil zone. It has a soft foam base to act as a shock absorber. Moreover, it has a 7.5” high grid of pocketed coils. These are coil casings with a foam-wrap that boost the edge support. Hence, it is a foundation layer and also the first coil zone.

The middle layer. It is a 2.5” grid of micro coils that are encased in specialty foam. They increase the springiness and give the mattress extra support.

The comfort layer. This top layer is made of two different foams. The first is a 1.5” gel-infused polyfoam, and the second, a 1.5” polyfoam with the quality and feel of natural latex. The combination of the two top layers produces a luxurious and comfortable feeling that is distinct of Winkbeds innerspring beds.

Winkbeds Firmness Levels

The brand offers three firmness levels:

  • Soft – measuring 4.5 on the firmness scale
  • Luxury – 6.5 on this scale
  • Firm – 7.5 on this scale

Apart from this, Winkbeds also offers the Winkebeds Plus firmness variant. It is meant for persons with 300+ lbs weight. This special category replaces the micro coil layer with a latex layer. This gives the required extra support for overweight people. The firmness level of Winkbeds Plus is 6.5.

Warranty, Free Trial, And More

WInkbeds offers 120 nights’ “Sweet Sleep Guarantee.” It is important to note that the company uses the term ‘guarantee’ in place of the usual ‘warranty.’ This implies brand confidence. To top this, the company also offers a lifetime warranty. Other consumer offerings include free delivery, free returns, and free pick-up if the consumer wants to return the mattress.

Price of Winkbed Innerspring Mattress

Brentwood Home Oceano

Brentwood Home OceanoThis luxury innerspring mattress comes from the thoroughbred Brentwood stable. The company has been manufacturing fine mattresses for over 30 years. Brentwood has an inborn liking for innerspring mattresses. Through in-house innovation and technological adoptation, it has constantly updated its spring mattresses. The Oceano is Brentwood’s yet another breakthrough in spring hybrids. It is an important update in spring-foam combination. It offers the pressure relieving goodness of spring technology with the next-level luxurious comfort of gel memory foam.

Although a hybrid, the Oceano gives the sleep quality of a thoroughbred.

The structure of the Oceano mattress

This structure is designed to deliver high performance. Rather than relying on the standard 3-layer design, the company has produced a thoughtful 5-layer construction. Its focus is on maximizing comfort and optimizing the springy bounce, so that the sleeper does not sink too deep or feel that the mattress is too hard to sleep on.

The structure incorporates two alternating layers of foam and coils, apart from the base and comfort layers.

The base layer

This mattress is significantly heavier than its peers. Against an average innerspring mattress weight of around 65 lbs., the Oceano weighs 113 lbs. Hence, a sturdy base is very important. This extra dense foam layer provides not only strength, but also stability to the bulk above it.

The first coil layer

This 8” layer is made of over 1000 individually wrapped coils in a typical Queen size Oceano mattress. These coils have varying firmness, depending on where they are placed. Its surface is divided into five zones. Three of them are in the main body of the mattress. They provide support to the head, shoulders, and legs. The remaining two zones are on the edges. They enhance the edge support.

The first foam layer

It is a 2” Airlux foam layer. It acts as an effective intermediate layer for the two coil layers placed beneath and above it. The foam is firm enough not to let the mattress sag over time. Yet, it is soft enough to be responsive to the body weight of the sleeper. The clever layer design makes Oceano an ideal mattress for heavy sleepers.

The second coil layer

This layer is made of 2.5” individually wrapped microcoils. They provide more responsive support than the bigger coils. They also inhibit motion transfer more effectively.

The second foam layer

This 2” gel memory foam layer improves the comfort and contouring factors. Being cooler than other foams, it also provides a cozier sleep.

The comfort layer

The .5” quilt layer is made of finest quality New Zealand wool. It acts an excellent heat regulating agent. Hence, it keeps the mattress cool during the hot months and warm in winters. The New Zealand wool gives exceptional comfort.

The smart structure design of Oceano unfolds the true essence of hybrid mattresses. it complements the bounce of the springs with the comfort of the foams.

The salient features of Oceano

Apart from the ground-breaking 5-layer structure design, the Oceano mattress has the following salient features:

  • All the materials are non-toxic
  • No flame-retardant chemicals
  • Mattress certified by CertiPUR-US
  • Excellent temperature regulation
  • Outstanding air circulation
  • Moisture wicking on the quilt surface
  • Ideal for all surfaces – box, flat platform, adjustable beds, or slated base

  • Free shipping accompanied by free return – if ever a customer is dissatisfied
  • 25 years’ warranty

Conclusion

The innerspring mattress has survived for almost eight decades. The mattress market is a jungle. As the saying goes, it is survival of the fittest. The innerspring mattresses have proved their fitness on the strength of their springs. To coin a catch-phrase, some springs die hard.

What has caused these mattresses to sustain for so long? It is the originality of the idea. The nature of a spring is to recoil under pressure and to bounce when the pressure is released. Putting this simple principle to creative use, the German genius Heinrich Westphal invented the innerspring mattress in 1871. The idea and its application are so brilliant that they have not lost their sheen even today.

This review’s aim is to provide an unbiased and informative resource to consumers. In an over-informed marketplace, this concise review will perhaps help in filtering the noise and providing a voice.

Melatonin: The Must-Have Guide to Restful Sleep

melatonin pills

Melatonin Supplement Facts and Effects

Sleep is a vital aspect of human health, often regarded as more crucial than food. It equips our bodies with the ability to repair themselves, rejuvenating energy and enhancing brain function. Without sufficient sleep, productivity diminishes, and health problems can arise. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to serious issues, including cognitive dysfunction and mood disorders.

Understanding the Sleep-Wake Cycle

Our natural sleep-wake cycle, known as the circadian rhythm, plays a fundamental role in maintaining healthy sleep patterns. While it’s essential to get adequate sleep, it’s equally important that we adhere to a consistent sleep schedule. For instance, staying awake all night and sleeping during daytime hours can lead to drowsiness when one should be alert—this may even indicate a sleep disorder. Alarmingly, excessive daytime sleepiness is a significant contributor to road accidents, underscoring the importance of proper sleep hygiene.

One of the primary factors influencing our sleep quality is hormonal regulation. The hypothalamus, located deep in the brain, helps sync our internal clock with external cues, predominantly the light from the sun. This normalization of the circadian rhythm is orchestrated through hormones like melatonin and cortisol.

The Role of Melatonin in Sleep

Melatonin, often touted as the sleep hormone, is secreted by the pineal gland primarily during the night. Its rise in the evening—typically between 8 PM and 9 PM—signals the body that it’s time to prepare for rest by reducing body temperature and inducing drowsiness. Conversely, during daylight hours, melatonin production drops to negligible levels, prompting our systems to stay awake and engaged.

The interplay between light exposure and melatonin production is crucial. During periods of bright light, a specific area in the hypothalamus, known as the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), activates signals that increase body temperature and cortisol levels, while melatonin is withheld. This phenomenon is why melatonin has been likened to Dracula—it thrives only in the darkness.

Factors Influencing Melatonin Production

Causes of Excess Melatonin

Elevated melatonin levels can disrupt sleep cycles and may stem from various factors. Some common reasons for excessive melatonin production include:

Limited Sunlight Exposure: Prolonged time away from natural sunlight, especially during winter, can cause the body to overproduce melatonin, often leading to seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
Liver Dysfunction: Since melatonin is metabolized in the liver, any dysfunction in liver activity can hinder its breakdown, leading to excessive drowsiness.
Nutritional Imbalances: Overconsumption of vitamins B3 or B6 can inadvertently increase melatonin levels.
Antidepressants: Certain medications designed to calm the mind can inadvertently increase melatonin production, causing daytime fatigue.

Causes of Low Melatonin

On the other hand, a deficiency in melatonin production is more common and has its own array of causes:

Excessive Daylight Exposure: Spending too much time outside in sunny conditions can suppress melatonin production, leading to insomnia and other sleep issues.
Overexposure to Artificial Light: Devices such as smartphones and televisions emit blue light, which warns the brain to stay alert and suppresses melatonin production.
Neurotransmitter Imbalance: Low serotonin levels can directly affect melatonin production since serotonin is the precursor to melatonin.
Lifestyle Choices: The consumption of excessive alcohol or caffeine, especially close to bedtime, can adversely affect melatonin levels.

Exploring Melatonin Supplements

Given the widespread challenges associated with sleep disorders, melatonin supplements have gained popularity. Initially targeted at older adults with insomnia due to decreased melatonin production, these supplements now serve a broader audience facing various sleep-related issues.

Melatonin supplements can come in several forms, including pills, liquids, and chewable tablets—either synthetic or natural. Most commercially available melatonin is synthetic due to its purity and lower risk of contamination.

Who Should Consider Melatonin Supplements?

Melatonin supplements may prove beneficial for individuals who:

– Experience disrupted sleep patterns due to shift work or frequent travel across time zones (jet lag).
– Struggle with insomnia or delayed sleep phase syndrome, finding it difficult to fall asleep before the early hours of the morning.

While melatonin supplements are widely accessible over-the-counter in some regions, they are not regulated by the FDA, making consultation with a healthcare provider essential before starting any supplementation.

Safety and Dosage Considerations

Melatonin is generally regarded as safe, but excessive use can lead to unwanted side effects, including daytime sleepiness, headaches, and digestive issues. Recommended dosages typically range from 0.1 to 0.3 milligrams, taken about an hour before bedtime. Tackling sleep issues should start with lifestyle changes and natural sleep hygiene practices before resorting to supplements.

Conclusion

Melatonin supplements can provide a helpful solution for certain sleep disorders, but they are not a panacea. Effective sleep hygiene and lifestyle modifications should always be considered first. If you struggle with sleep issues, consulting a sleep specialist can help identify the root cause and establish a safe, effective treatment plan. By understanding how melatonin functions and knowing when to seek help, you can optimize your sleep and overall well-being.

iSense Smart Pillow: Stunning Upgrade for Better Sleep

smart pillow

The iSense Smart Pillow is a high-tech, adjustable pillow that boasts various features for those who want to be more educated about just how well they sleep. It’s a step up from their other pillow, the Classic Regular Pillow, of which the main feature is only customization via the foam filling. With the Insense Smart Pillow there’s lots more to revel in.

Overview of the iSense Smart Pillow

The iSense Smart Pillow isn’t physically designed any differently than the iSense Classic Pillow but what is different about it is what lurks inside.

Along with the foam that goes inside the pillow is a hidden compartment that houses all of the awesome features of the product. Spread across the width of the pillow is a long sleep sensor. This sleep sensor is plugged into the included sleep tracker, which is something you’ll need to charge about every 3 weeks. The sleep tracker connects to your phone via bluetooth, where it’ll then be able to feed information to the Speedpace app (available on both Android and iOS devices) about it’s findings regarding how well, or how poorly, you slept.

For those wondering how they will wash a pillow like this, have no fear. Both the sleep sensor and sleep tracker (along with the cords to each) can be taken out of the pillow easily so that you can throw it in the washing machine.

Regarding the foam, there are two separate compartments that you can access to adjust the filling. There is a compartment for the top portion of the pillow, and a compartment for the bottom portion.

So what awesome features does this pillow offer?

On the tech side, with the sleep tracker, you’ll have access to knowledge you might not have otherwise. You’ll now know precisely how long it took you to fall asleep, how long you actually slept, how many sleep cycles you’ve had in a night, the number of times you tossed and turned, as well as your heart rate and respiratory rate. The app also comes with a smart alarm, personalized tips based on how you’re doing and social connectivity.

Aside from the tech stuff, some things you can expect are:

  • A 120-night trial period that will let you take your time to decide if it’s for you or not
  • Precision cross-cut cooling memory foam that is anti-clumping and CertiPUR-US® Certified
  • A premium and hypoallergenic cover made of moisture-wicking fabric, along with a breathable band

My iSense Smart Pillow Findings

As far as the pillow itself goes, the claims they make on their website are #facts. The outer cover is both stunning and cooling and I could tell immediately that they had used a moisture-wicking, Dacron-inspired fabric here. These types of textiles are so much more high-tech than people realize and that’s why items with them, or made out of them, come at a premium cost. The stitching on top is beautiful and it’s also true that the cover is silky-soft. They did a wonderful job in making this pillow feel totally luxurious and high-end. Even if you were in a store and you were “just browsing,” you’d be happy to have your fingers grace its surface. It’s honestly lovely. The way this pillow is sewn is also awesome. It’s not the standard style of what you’d expect from most pillows. It has corners, so-to-speak. Because there’s this well-designed band along its perimeter, it allows the pillow to maintain its shape more efficiently thereby creating space for your neck to be supported. As a plus, the piping on the outer cover really adds to the aesthetic.

With the foam filling, I think that having two separate compartments within the pillow where the filling can be adjusted was an incredibly wise and functional design choice. It’s all about balance here and it’s evident that element was really taken into consideration. This is a distinction that I cannot overlook, because they’ve created a way for the foam to move around and within the pillow without eventually coming to occupy a single space. The separation between the top and bottom layers allows the filling to be spread out, as it should be. As for the foam itself, it’s unlike any other foam filling I’ve ever seen before. The foam genuinely does not fall flat. It’s honestly impressive and it’s also surprising how fast it returns to its original volume.

My iSense Smart Pillow Recommendation

I have to say that overall I really love this pillow. I like that it’s adjustable and machine washable and I think it’s great that the sleep sensor and sleep tracker are both removable. You can tell that there was a lot of effort put into its creation and every element is an indication of thatfrom the foam itself to the compartments it’s in, to the pillow’s fancy moisture-wicking outer shell, and even to the way it arrives at your door. The packaging is definitely proper and I’m a consumer who definitely appreciates great packaging.

isense smart pillow unboxed

I also want to add that the fact that the outer shell already has some foam lining is a really nice touch. Another awesome benefit about being able to remove the sleep tracker and sleep sensor is that if you wanted to, you could actually use it in other pillows as well. If for whatever reason you didn’t like this pillow, you would still be able to salvage the sleep tracker inside of it and continue to make use of it.

isense smart pillow out shell foam

From my research, I’ve found that there is apparently some controversy surrounding sleep apps. Despite this, it all seems to come down to personal opinion. I think that this pillow is a great choice for someone who can appreciate the tech behind it and who believes in the growth and evolution of consumer-friendly sleep tech. If you strive to be mindful of your health and of your sleep, this product is catered to your person. If you’re new to these types of smart products and manage to maintain a level of skepticism or reluctance, perhaps it’s best to stick with what you know, especially if you don’t think you’ll be making much use of it. Go with your gut instinct, they always say. iSense’s Regular Classic Pillow is what served as the foundation of their Smart Pillow so if you don’t want a smart product, go with the original, which is still a super duper luxurious choice, that I’m sure you’ll be more than happy with.

Mattress Sizes & Dimensions Guide

Mattress Sizes

Here are the dimensions for some common mattress sizes in the United States:

  1. Twin: 38 inches wide by 75 inches long (96.5 cm x 190.5 cm)
  2. Twin XL: 38 inches wide by 80 inches long (96.5 cm x 203 cm)
  3. Full/Double: 54 inches wide by 75 inches long (137 cm x 190.5 cm)
  4. Queen: 60 inches wide by 80 inches long (152.5 cm x 203 cm)
  5. King: 76 inches wide by 80 inches long (193 cm x 203 cm)
  6. California King: 72 inches wide by 84 inches long (183 cm x 213.5 cm)
  7. Alaskan King: 108 inches wide by 108 inches long (274 cm x 274 cm)

When buying a mattress, size isn’t the first thing that people consider. Other factors like firmness and material usually come first. While they are indeed important, the size of the mattress is also essential. To determine the right size of the mattress, you have to consider the size of the room, as well as the size and shape of the bed. How big is your bed? Will the mattress leave enough leg room? What is the shape of the bed? All these factors go into deciding the right mattress size. If you are buying a mattress to place on the floor, you must consider the heights of the sleepers and the size of the room. The mattress should be big enough to be comfortable, but not so big that it doesn’t leave any space in the room.

You might think that you would be able to understand the different sizes of beds easily, but it isn’t so. With an overwhelmingly large number of sizes, choosing the right mattress can be a lot more complicated than we usually imagine. What exactly is the size of your bed? Is it a king or a queen? And what is the difference between a queen and a double mattress? Since a mattress has a great impact on your sleep and overall health, you need to find the perfect size for your bed. Only the right mattress will be able to provide the best comfort and sleep.

Why There Are Different Mattress Sizes?

Mattresses come in different sizes because no two persons, no two rooms, and no two rooms are alike. What fits a square bed will not fit a rectangular bed. There are also circular beds nowadays, and they need a completely different type of mattress. Some beds are too small, barely able to fit one person. Some beds are larger where two children can fit comfortably. Standard single beds have enough room for one grown person, while full-size beds are right for two people. Some beds are also big enough to fit three. Kids beds and bunk beds are usually smaller and narrower and need smaller mattresses.

To complicate matters further, mattress size varies from one country to another. If a person from Europe buys a mattress in the US, there’s a good chance of getting all confused. The first thing that you are asked when you go for mattress shopping is the size you are looking for. Unfortunately, it isn’t at all easy to decide a size from the various beds on display at the store. If you give a vague reply, you will come home with the wrong mattress. Therefore, knowing the dimensions of the bed should come before mattress shopping.

Who Decides the Mattress Size and Dimensions?

Mattresses sizes vary widely by country. In countries like Canada, mattress sizes begin from baby cribs, while in Australia, they begin from single beds. Names and dimensions vary considerably from one region to another, and most countries also have their own standards and terminologies for different mattresses. Two mattresses with the same name and nominal size may have different dimensions, while two mattresses with different names may have the same size. This is because of materials used, thickness, supper type, amount of padding and other manufacturing tolerances. Everywhere around the world, standard beds are square and rectangular, but special shapes, such as circular, can be custom made.

Before going for mattress shopping, it is recommended that you get familiar with the mattress sizing guidelines of your region. This will help you select the accurate size for your bed.

How to Determine Your Mattress Size and Requirements?

There are two ways to determine your mattress size. The first involves measuring your bed, and the second involves measuring your existing mattress. It is recommended that the mattress be at least four inches longer than the tallest person to sleep on it.

Make sure to strip your bed of all sheets and covers before measuring it. Measure the length and the breadth accurately, either in inches or centimeters. Next, find the mattress size guide for your region and figure out what standard size best matches your bed. If you have bought mattresses earlier for your bed and know the standard size, the process becomes a lot easier.

There are a wide variety of mattress sizes and dimensions. Here we take a look at some of the standard sizes.

Small Single or Crib Mattress: This is the smallest available mattress size in the world, meant for newborns, infants, and babies. This is usually the first mattress a person ever sleeps on. Take note that this size isn’t available in every country. For instance, in Australia, this isn’t a standard size and has to be custom made. The small single or crib size mattress has the dimensions of 30 inches X 75 inches in the US and Canada, and 24 inches X 75 inches in UK and Ireland. It is vital to get the size right when buying a mattress for your baby. Always buy the crib first, and then the mattress. Size is more important for a crib mattress than any other mattresses. The mattress should fit the crib exactly, leaving no space between the bedding and the frame. Any space between the mattress and the crib can get the baby trapped and cause injury. Also make sure to choose a firm mattress, because softer mattresses have greater sinkage and have been found to cause suffocation.

Single or Twin: Also used for bunk beds, this is usually the smallest adult bed size in most countries. Although single or twin beds are available all over the world, the dimensions vary from one region to another. In the US, the dimensions are 38 inches × 75 inches, while in the UK and Ireland, they are 35 inches × 75 inches, and in Australia, the dimensions are 36-inch × 74 inches. When picking a single or twin bed size, always refer to the size chart applicable to your region.

Twin beds are usually the least expensive of all adult mattresses and happen to be rectangular in shape. As the name suggests, single mattresses are designed for single sleepers who do not need much space in the bed, or want to fit a bed in a small bedroom or dorm room. Although two adults will not be able to share a twin size bed, two kids can easily sleep together on it, or an adult with a small child.

Twin XL: This size is available only in certain regions, like the US and Europe. Usually the next size after single or twin, it is a little longer in length, and measures 38 inches × 80 inches in the US, and 35 inches × 83 inches in Europe.

Much like twin mattresses, twin XL mattresses are designed for taller, single sleepers who don’t move around at night. Twin XL mattresses can also be shared by two kids or an adult and a child. A single adult can also fit in a small pet. Twin XL beds save space in the room. If you are a tall individual and sleep alone, then the Twin XL size is much better for you compared to the standard single or twin.

King Single/ Super Single: The King single is the right size for medium-sized rooms that don’t have space for a full bed. Unfortunately, the King single isn’t a standard size in most countries. It is only available in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. In Australia and New Zealand, the King Single measures 42 inches × 80 inches, while in Europe the dimensions are 42 in × 79 inches. If you need this size in the US, you can get it custom made.

The king single is the largest single bed available. It is perfect for single sleepers who move around during the night, teens and growing kids, and also for sharing with a pet. It can also be the right size for a small guest room. In places where this size is available, the King single is actually a popular choice because it’s smaller than a double bed but larger than twin XL. Perfect for saving space in a room, a King single mattress will allow a single sleeper (or two kids) to be comfortable while leaving enough space in the room for other furniture.

Small Double: Also called three-quarter, this is a little smaller than a full double bed and measures 48 inches x 75 inches in the US and the UK. Small double mattresses are the go-to option for those looking for a slightly bigger mattress that’s smaller than a double. If your bedroom doesn’t have a lot of space, then a small double lets you enjoy the feel of a double bed while also saving space. A small double can also be shared by two people if they are not too active during the night.

Besides, it is also a great choice for growing children who don’t yet need a double bed. When your child starts to grow out of the existing single bed, a small double is a perfect size that will save space, give enough room to sleep comfortably, and also make them feel like they have a bed like yours. The small double isn’t available in Europe and Australia, but available in Japan and some of the Scandinavian regions.

Double: Also called full, this is a standard bed size that’s available all over the world. But the dimensions vary from one country to another. A double bed is smaller than a Queen but larger than a Twin XL. Modern double mattresses are designed for single people who want more space than what’s offered by a Twin XL. Even till a few years ago, the double bed was the standard mattress size for couples; in fact, that’s where the name ‘double’ comes from. But after the Queen came in, that is what is more preferred these days.

Queen: This is the standard mattresses for couples. It has been designed for couples, with a suitable width for sharing and a length that’s long enough for most people (except if you are Michael Jordan). Most couples today find the Queen more cost-effective and spacious than the double. It measures 60 inches x 80 inches and comfortably fits a spacious room. Unless a room is too small, a Queen bed usually saves floor space

King: The King size mattress is aptly called so because it is the largest and the most luxurious of all sizes. Unfortunately, the King bed will only fit rooms that are large. In a big room, a King mattress will fit nicely while also leaving enough space for other furniture. The King bed was mainly designed for couples to sleep comfortably without feeling cramped, but that doesn’t mean others cannot sleep on it. If you prefer to sleep on a large bed with plenty of room to sprawl, the King bed will let you sleep like a king. In most countries, the size of the King mattresses is either 76 inches x 80 inches, or 76 inches x 60 inches. As evident from the dimensions, the King mattress is square in shape. Keep in mind; it’s also one of the most expensive mattresses.

California King: If your feet hang off the bed even on a King mattress, you need the California King. There isn’t much difference between King and Cal King, except that four inches have been removed from the width and added to the length. The Cal King is the longest mattress size, great for tall people. The prices of the King and the Cal King sizes have little difference between them, just like their dimensions.

While it’s difficult to say for sure, it is often assumed that California king mattresses are more popular in California due to the name association. However, there is no concrete evidence to support this claim, and the popularity of California king mattresses can vary depending on factors such as regional preferences, availability, and personal preferences.

California king mattresses were originally designed in the 1960s for Hollywood celebrities, who wanted an extra-long mattress that could accommodate their tall frames. Since then, California king mattresses have become more widely available and are popular among many people who value the extra length.

It’s also worth noting that standard king-size mattresses remain the most popular mattress size in the United States overall, according to industry data. However, the popularity of different mattress sizes can vary depending on factors such as geography, demographics, and marketing.

There is no single individual or company credited with creating the first California king mattress, as it likely evolved over time through a combination of consumer demand and mattress manufacturers experimenting with different sizes and designs. However, it is known that the California king size was not officially recognized as a standard size by the bedding industry until the 1980s, after it had gained popularity among consumers in California and other parts of the country.

If you’ve never paid much attention to mattress sizes, now is the time. The best thing to do is to measure your bed and then take the help of the storekeepers to make the right choice. The dimensions of an existing mattress should also work. Remember that a good night’s rest depends upon the mattress, so investing time and care in its purchase is highly essential.

Unique Mattress Sizes

  1. Full XL – This size is wider and longer than a standard full-size bed, measuring 54 inches wide by 80 inches long. It can be a good option for couples who want a smaller bed but need more width than a twin or twin XL.

  2. RV/Short Queen – This size is commonly used in recreational vehicles and measures 60 inches wide by 74-75 inches long. It can be a good option for people who have limited space but still want a comfortable sleep surface.

The Alaskan King Mattress

An Alaskan king mattress is an oversized mattress that measures 108 inches wide by 108 inches long, making it one of the largest standard mattress sizes available. It is sometimes also referred to as an “Alaska king” or “Alaska bed.”

Due to its large size, an Alaskan king mattress is ideal for people who need extra space to sleep comfortably, such as families with children, couples with pets or individuals who simply enjoy having a lot of room to stretch out. However, it is important to note that finding bedding and accessories for an Alaskan king mattress can be challenging, as it is not a common size and may require custom-made items. Additionally, the size of the mattress can make it difficult to move and may not fit through narrow doorways or staircases, so it is important to consider these factors before purchasing an Alaskan king mattress.

Round Mattresses

Round mattresses are a unique type of mattress that, as the name suggests, have a circular shape rather than the traditional rectangular shape of most mattresses. Round mattresses can come in a variety of sizes, but they are typically smaller than standard sizes, such as twin or full size, and are often used as novelty items or for decorative purposes.

Some people find round mattresses to be comfortable and supportive, as they offer a uniform sleeping surface that can help distribute body weight more evenly. However, others may find the circular shape to be awkward or challenging to get used to.

Round mattresses can be harder to find and may be more expensive than traditional mattresses due to their unique design and manufacturing process. They may also require custom-made bedding and accessories. Additionally, the circular shape of the mattress may not fit well in standard bed frames, so it’s important to choose a compatible frame or consider purchasing a specialized bed designed for round mattresses.

Sound Machine: The Must-Have Solution for Better Sleep

Marpac Dohm

A significant portion of the urban population battles sleep disorders, leading the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to declare a sleep crisis. Alarmingly, surveys reveal that nearly one-third of adults in the U.S. struggle with inadequate sleep. While demanding schedules and unhealthy lifestyles often play a role in this issue, the consequences of insufficient rest can be profound. Many individuals have become accustomed to less than eight hours of sleep, but this routine can adversely affect health and well-being over time.

The CDC’s acknowledgment of sleep disorders as an epidemic underscores the escalating problem of sleeplessness. Sleep disorders manifest in various forms, with fragmented sleep being one of the most prevalent. This condition causes individuals to awaken multiple times throughout the night, preventing restorative rest. Insomnia is another leading sleep problem, where individuals find it challenging to fall asleep at all. Other issues include nightmares, night sweats, and snoring, all of which can contribute to excessive daytime sleepiness. When fatigue sets in, concentration wanes, leading to decreased productivity. Sleep impacts overall health significantly, and a lack of it can result in serious long-term effects.

What Are the Most Common Causes of Restless Sleep?

Understanding the diverse reasons behind sleep disorders is crucial for effective treatment. Without proper diagnosis, many individuals may remain unaware of their condition, persisting with issues like daytime sleepiness or fatigue for years. Additionally, snoring often goes untreated, affecting not only the individual but also their partner.

Physical Factors

Various temporary physical issues can disrupt sleep. Conditions such as fevers, infections, indigestion, or chronic pain can prevent restful sleep. Medications for certain ailments may also interfere with the sleep cycle. For many women experiencing menopause, night sweats and hot flashes can further contribute to poor sleep quality. Consuming heavy meals shortly before bedtime can lead to discomfort and restless nights. Thankfully, these physical problems are usually temporary, and normal sleep can often be restored once symptoms subside.

Medical Causes

Underlying medical conditions can also significantly interfere with sleep. Sleep apnea is one of the most common culprits, occurring when throat muscles relax excessively, blocking the airway and causing interruptions in breathing. This leads to snoring and frequent awakenings, leaving affected individuals feeling fatigued even after a full night’s sleep. Other medical issues, like asthma or restless legs syndrome, can further hinder sleep quality. Nightmares and night terrors also contribute to disruptions in a restful night.

Environmental Reasons

Often overlooked, environmental factors can play a significant role in poor sleep quality. Residing in a noisy neighborhood or being close to bustling streets can create a constant disturbance. Even shared living spaces can bring unwanted sounds into the bedroom, such as conversations, laughter, or pets. Initially disregarded, these factors can be significant; improving one’s living conditions often leads to better sleep.

Psychiatric Causes

Mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression, are also known to disrupt sleep patterns. Stress and emotional turmoil can further contribute to insomnia, causing significant distress.

The Role of a Sound Machine in Achieving Better Sleep

Given the myriad intrusive noises that permeate our environment—from the hum of appliances to outside traffic—it’s no wonder many struggle to achieve quality sleep. For those seeking an auditory backdrop to neutralize disturbing sounds, a sound machine for better sleep can be a game-changer.

What Is a White Noise Machine?

Living in urban or suburban settings means that complete silence is often unattainable. A white noise machine provides a practical solution, effectively drowning out disruptive sounds and creating a calm atmosphere conducive for sleep. Whether you’re aiming to conceal unwelcome noises or simply looking for a soothing backdrop, these devices serve both purposes.

White noise machines come in a variety of forms, from simple models that generate basic sounds like a fan’s hum to more sophisticated devices featuring an array of acoustic options. Typically, common sounds include:

– Waterfalls
– Rainfall
– Forest ambiance
– River or stream sounds
– Train sounds
– Nighttime sounds, such as crickets

How a White Noise Machine Enhances Sleep Quality

Using a white noise machine can significantly aid sleep in several ways:

1. Establishing a Bedtime Ritual: Integrating the usage of a sound machine into your nightly routine—such as pairing it with brushing your teeth or winding down—signals your body that it’s time for rest. This consistency can facilitate easier falling asleep.

2. Creating a Quiet Environment: The primary function of a sound machine is to mask ambient noises, establishing a peaceful haven for rest. By incorporating white noise, you can effectively shield yourself from disrupting sounds that might otherwise keep you awake.

3. Quieting an Overactive Mind: For individuals who struggle to quiet their thoughts at night, the soothing sounds from a white noise machine can create a mental space, making it easier to drift off to sleep. This benefit also extends to those practicing meditation.

4. Convenient for Travel: Travelers often find it challenging to sleep in unfamiliar surroundings. A portable white noise machine serves as an immediate ally, helping to drown out foreign sounds for a peaceful night’s rest.

Are White Noise Machines Safe for Babies?

Many parents have incorporated white noise machines to aid their babies’ sleep. While effective in minimizing disturbing sounds, caution is warranted. Continuous noise exposure can lead to hearing issues or dependence, potentially complicating a child’s ability to sleep without it. Occasional use may be beneficial, but reliance on a sound machine should be avoided.

For maximum effectiveness, incorporating a sound machine into your routine can be beneficial, provided that you don’t become overly dependent. Align it with your nightly habits to enhance your sleep experience, even when external noise is less of an issue.

One of the standout options I recommend is the Marpac Dohm. This analog device offers natural sound that envelops the room, creating a comforting atmosphere.

In conclusion, using a sound machine for better sleep can effectively alleviate many sleep disruptions, establishing a healthier foundation for restorative rest. Whether coping with environmental noise or managing an overactive mind, these devices can be a vital component of a successful sleep strategy.

Stunning Latex Mattress Guide: Best Choices for Comfort

Best Latex Mattress Reviews

Best Latex Mattress Reviews: Your Comprehensive Guide

When it comes to creating a cozy and elegant bedroom, the right elements play a crucial role. From beautiful decor to high-quality bedding, every detail matters. However, amidst all these essentials, one item often gets overlooked: the mattress. This is surprising, considering that we spend a significant amount of our lives resting on it.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Mattress

Statistics reveal that the innerspring mattress is the most commonly sold type in the U.S., yet it consistently ranks among the least satisfying options for consumers. In contrast, latex mattresses boast an impressive 80% satisfaction rate, while memory foam mattresses come in slightly higher at 81%. Given that a mattress typically lasts about ten years, selecting the right one is paramount for ensuring quality sleep and overall well-being.

Investing in a high-quality latex mattress can improve your health significantly. It alleviates various aches and pains and is particularly beneficial for those suffering from conditions like arthritis or spondylitis. A suitable mattress enables you to sleep soundly and wake up refreshed, contributing to a better quality of life.

Understanding Latex: The Material Behind the Comfort

Latex is tree sap, primarily derived from the rubber tree, which is primarily cultivated in Thailand, Indonesia, and several other countries. This sap is processed to create a milky white foam that solidifies into rubber, forming the basis of various products, including mattresses. One of the main reasons to choose a latex mattress over synthetics or foams is its longevity and durability.

Types of Latex Used in Mattresses

When shopping for a latex mattress, it’s essential to understand the different types available:

1. 100% Natural Latex: Composed entirely of natural rubber latex, these mattresses offer superior comfort and support but tend to be on the pricier side. Perfect for those committed to an organic lifestyle.

2. Natural Latex: This variety combines 85% natural rubber latex with 15% synthetic latex. It provides an excellent balance of comfort and durability, making it a popular option for budget-conscious consumers who still want quality.

3. Pure Latex: Composed of 20% natural latex and 80% synthetic, this type is the most affordable but doesn’t offer the same level of comfort as its natural counterparts.

Benefits of Choosing a Latex Mattress

One of the most effective ways to enhance your sleep quality is by investing in a latex mattress. Here are some compelling advantages:

Organic and Healthy: Made from natural materials, latex is free from harmful chemicals, making it an eco-friendly choice. It is biodegradable and doesn’t emit toxic substances, contributing positively to your health.

Comfort and Flexibility: Latex mattresses adapt to your body while providing excellent support, ensuring your spine remains aligned no matter how you sleep. This progressive comfort is ideal for reducing pressure points.

Antibacterial Properties: Unlike memory foam, which can harbor dust mites and allergens, latex is naturally resistant to these issues, making it suitable for allergy sufferers.

Breathability: Many consumers find themselves overheating during sleep, but latex mattresses excel in temperature regulation, maintaining a comfortable environment year-round.

Support and Pressure Relief: The elasticity of latex provides optimal support for your body’s natural curves, helping alleviate muscle tension and improve circulation.

Potential Disadvantages to Consider

While latex mattresses have numerous advantages, a few potential downsides should be noted:

– A new latex mattress may feel firmer initially but typically softens with use.

– Synthetic latex mattresses may compress in specific areas over time, necessitating careful selection.

– They can be quite heavy, making relocation more challenging.

Dunlop vs. Talalay: Understanding Latex Manufacturing Processes

The differences between Dunlop and Talalay latex are subtle yet significant.

Dunlop Latex: This is the traditional method, known for being energy-efficient. It results in a denser foam, providing a firm feel.

Talalay Latex: This newer method is more complex and expensive, offering a lighter, airier feel. Although many believe Talalay is inherently softer than Dunlop, both processes can produce varying firmness levels.

Should You Consider Synthetic Latex?

Synthetic latex mattresses offer some advantages, such as lower cost, but they are made from chemicals that may contain harmful substances. If cost is a concern, synthetic latex can still provide decent comfort, although it may lack the longevity and health benefits of natural options.

Key Factors When Buying a Latex Mattress

When considering a new latex mattress, take the following factors into account:

Blend: Opt for a mattress primarily composed of natural latex for health and comfort benefits.

Firmness: Choose a firmness level that aligns with your sleeping preferences. Many brands offer trial periods, allowing you to make an informed choice.

Breathability: Ensure adequate airflow to avoid overheating at night.

Layers: A greater number of layers typically enhances support and comfort.

Warranty and Certification: Look for a warranty of at least ten years and check for certifications ensuring quality materials.

Molecule Sheets Review

Molecule Sheets

Molecule Sheets Review: Cool but Still Cozy

Molecule is revolutionizing the sleep industry with its innovative approach to performance bedding. With a mission to enhance sleep for optimal recovery, Molecule is backed by high-profile athletes, including Russell Wilson, quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, who proudly serves as an official Molecule Sleep Ambassador. Among their standout products are the Molecule Sheets, crafted from a unique blend of cotton and Tencel, a sustainable fiber derived from wood pulp. This combination not only enhances comfort but also promotes breathability, making these sheets an ideal choice for anyone seeking a restful night’s sleep.

The Science Behind Molecule Sheets

Molecule Sheets are engineered for maximum comfort. The blend of 52% cotton and 48% Tencel results in sheets that offer a soft and inviting feel, surpassing the comfort of Tencel alone. The Tencel component acts like a moisture sponge, effectively absorbing sweat to keep you cool and dry throughout the night. This blend ensures that even on the hottest nights, you can drift off without worrying about overheating, making them especially appealing for hot sleepers or those who tend to sweat during their sleep.

Ordering Your Molecule Sheets

Purchasing Molecule Sheets is a straightforward process through their official website. They offer prompt shipping, delivering your new sheets in a stylish, well-packaged box. These sheets come with a generous 30-night sleep trial. If they don’t meet your expectations, you can easily return them for a full refund—allowing you to test them risk-free.

Pricing Structure for Molecule Sheets

While high-quality sleep products often come at a premium, the Molecule Sheets are an investment in comfort and rest. Here are the current prices for different sizes:

Twin: $169
Twin XL: $179
Full: $189
Queen: $199
King: $219
Cal King: $229

Though they may seem pricey, the quality and durability of these sheets make them a worthwhile addition to your bedding collection, adaptable for year-round use.

Construction and Design of Molecule Sheets

The design of Molecule Sheets is practical yet stylish. With a depth of 15 inches, these sheets can accommodate most mattresses, making them perfect for the convenience of online mattress buyers. Crafted in Bahrain, the attention to detail is evident in both the fabric and the stitching, contributing to their sleek appearance and durability.

Included in each set are a top sheet, a fitted sheet, and two envelope-style pillowcases, which not only look polished but also help keep your pillows securely in place. The smooth texture of the sheets feels delightful against the skin, while their breathable nature ensures a comfortable night’s rest.

My Experience with Molecule Sheets

Initially, I was skeptical about the claims surrounding Tencel sheets, having tried various versions before. However, my experience with Molecule Sheets has been overwhelmingly positive. They retained their smooth texture without unraveling or pilling, which is often an issue with other Tencel options.

Lightweight and breathable, these sheets possess the qualities needed to maintain an ideal sleep temperature, thus preventing the disruption that comes from overheating. These sheets not only regulate temperature but also enhance your overall sleep quality, making them a suitable choice for anyone looking to optimize their sleep pattern.

A Perfect Pair: Molecule Mattress

In addition to their sheets, Molecule also offers a mattress designed to maximize breathability. Although they utilize foam construction, their open-cell technology means improved airflow compared to traditional foam mattresses. The synergy between the Molecule Sheets and the Molecule Mattress can transform your sleep experience by providing optimal pressure relief, support, and temperature regulation.

Conclusion: Why Choose Molecule Sheets?

In summary, investing in Molecule Sheets could significantly enhance your sleep quality. Their breathable Tencel-cotton blend promotes a refreshingly cool sleeping environment, perfect for those who often wake up due to excessive heat. With a risk-free trial, competitive pricing, and a commitment to quality, there’s little reason not to consider these high-performance sheets as part of your bedding essentials. Don’t compromise on your sleep; explore the comforts offered by Molecule Sheets and wake up refreshed, ready to tackle the day ahead.

Lucid Hybrid Mattress Review

Lucid 12 inch hybrid

I was given a free 12 inch Lucid Hybrid hybrid mattress for review. This is a spring and foam mattress with charcoal and aloe vera infused foam to reduce the initial memory foam smell you get when opening the mattress. The charcoal is used in the top layer of foam to help absorb odors over the life of the mattress. What makes this mattress particularly unique is that it sells for an astonishingly low price of $399 for a queen size on Amazon.

Overview of the Lucid Hybrid

Below is a video overview of the mattress highlighting some of its main features. This mattress is Amazon Prime eligible so ships quickly and is ready to sleep on a few hours after opening.

As you can see from the box it is rolled and not folded. That means there are no creases when you opening it allowing you to sleep on it in just a few hours.  This also makes it easier to unpack and open since you open the box from the sides instead of the top.

Here’s a picture of the mattress roll packed and out of the box. It comes with a letter opener and this is one of the times where it was super easy to open using a letter opener.

Lucid mattress out of the box

How Much Does the Lucid Hybrid Cost?

Cost depends on how deep of a mattress you want. The difference between the 10 inch and 12 inch Lucid is that the 10 inch has 5.5-inch springs and 2.5 inches of the charcoal and aloe vera foam while the 12 inch has 6.5-inch springs and 3.5 inches of the charcoal and aloe vera foam.

Below are the current prices on Amazon for the 12-inch Lucid Hybrid:

Twin: $259.99
Twin XL: $279.99
Full: $339.99
Queen: $399.99
King: $499.99
California King: $499.99

Construction of the Lucid Hybrid Mattress

Lucid Hybrid ConstructionThe construction of the mattress is as follows going from the bottom to the top:

Weight: 97 lb.s (queen size)

  • Base foam layer
  • 6.5-inch pocket coil system
  • Base foam layer on top of coil system
  • Aloe Vera infused transition foam layer
  • Charcoal infused foam comfort layer

  • This mattress can be used on an adjustable bed.

My Lucid Hybrid Mattress Findings

Even though Lucid rates this mattress on the plusher end of the spectrum. I would rate it more of a medium firm. Here’s a picture illustrating how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress.  When you lay down you don’t sink in all that much into the foam.

Lucid mattress sink

Here’s a video illustrating motion transfer on the Lucid. There is some good bounce and a little motion transfer too due to the coils and the fact that the foam recovers faster than a denser foam will.

Here’s a video that shows how each later reacts.

Here’s a peek at the spring system which is surrounded by foam. It takes a little digging but it’s in there.Lucid Hybrid Springs

My Lucid Hybrid Recommendation

I recommend this mattress for stomach and back sleepers and the occasional side sleeper. This mattress will sleep relatively cool for a mattress with foam on the top layer because the foam is a bit more breathable and there is a spring system underneath. However, I found that the foam doesn’t conform quite as much as a denser foam mattress would which is why side sleepers may not like it as much.

For the money, this is an incredible value. One drawback is that they don’t have a standard 100-night trial but you are protected with Amazon’s return period however you would need to ship the mattress back which would be a bit expensive.

Idle Latex Mattress: Stunning Dual-Firmness for Ultimate Comfort

latex hybrid

The Idle Latex is a monster of a mattress. So much so that it can’t be shipped via UPS Ground, instead it needs to be shipped freight which takes a little longer but worth it because the quality is definitely there. This mattress still comes shipped in a box but will require two people to transport into your bedroom. This mattress is two-sided and therefore flippable. You can choose to have each side the same firmness or different firmness levels on each side. No matter what you choose the price is the same. A queen size current retails for $1,899 but you can often find good discounts like the one below for $300 off to save you a considerable amount.

All Idle Sleep mattresses come with a 120 night trial period where you can try it out in your home and if not happy during that time, return it for a full refund. Shipping and returns are also completely free.

Overview of the Idle Latex Mattress

The founder of Idle Sleep has been in the mattress industry for over 20 years and the impetus for creating this company was to bring better quality mattresses to the online marketplace. For decades, fippable mattresses were common in the industry because they did in fact prolong the life of the mattress. These were a bit more expensive to make but you did get what you paid for. Idle is the first company I have come across to bring an entire line of mattresses to market that are flippable or dual firmness. What has struck me about these mattresses is just how heavy they are. And in my opinion, weight is a good indicator of quality. That’s not always the case but is certainly the case here.

Here’s a quick video overview of the mattress.

How Much Does it Cost?

Here’s the most recent pricing. Remember we also offer a $300 discount to bring these prices down.

Construction of the Idle Latex Mattress

Below are the construction details as listed by Idle Sleep.

  1. All natural organic cotton cover.
  2. 1″ of Idle quilting foam.
  3. 3″ Talalay latex.
  4. 6″ Quantum edge-to-edge pocket coils.
  5. same layers as 2 and 3 on the bottom.

It should also be noted that this mattress can indeed be used on an adjustable base.

My Idle Latex Mattress Findings

Below is a photo of how much the medium firm version sinks. For reference, this mattress has a lot more “hug” than a traditional latex mattress because there is a layer of quilted foam on the top which allows you to sink in more. If this were just latex on the top it would have a much flatter look and not much cradling.

Here’s a video illustrating motion transfer. This system. It absorbs a lot of motion at the top because of the quilted foam.

Since this mattress is so heavy, having handles makes flipping easier. Here’s a pic of the handles sewn into each side.

handles

This mattress won’t sleep hot either. It does have a layer of quilted foam at the top which does trap more heat than a traditional latex mattress. but the foam isn’t all that dense and there is only an inch so it doesn’t impede on breathability that much.

My Idle Sleep Recommendation

Given the construction of this mattress and the fact that it is Made in the USA you are getting a really good value here. While this isn’t necessarily an all natural mattress because of the quilted foam, for the most part it is made with natural materials making it more eco-friendly that most mattresses out there.

Some people love latex and others hate it, what I like about this mattress is that you don’t feel like you are sleeping on a latex bed. The coil system and foam layer make it feel like a great traditional mattress. Latex is a very resilient material though and it makes me feel confident that this mattress should last quite a while longer than the one-sided foam mattresses currently out there. You will pay more upfront but it also means you can be with a bed you love for a lot longer.

I liked the feel of the medium firm which is a bit firmer than what a foam mattress company would classify as medium firm. People looking for a mattress with mostly natural materials that will last a long time and have the option of different firmnessess will really enjoy this mattress.

Cool-jams Moisture Wicking Pajamas Review

cool jams

Cool Jams are pajamas designed with a unique lightweight moisture-wicking fabric, created with the intention to help you sleep cool and comfortable.

The pajamas are made of specially-engineered polyester fibers that are exclusively meant to enhance breathability. They’re engineered to pull moisture away from the body, by way of capillary motion and a higher rate of evaporation.

“Capillary motion is any flow governed by forces associated with surface tension. Some examples include paper towels, sponges and wicking fabrics. Their pores act as small capillaries, absorbing a comparatively large amount of liquid.”

This process allows moisture, as well as excess body heat, to easily move through the fabric to the outer layer, where it’s then able to more easily evaporate. By utilizing capillary motion, the pajamas allow for more efficient airflow technology. Cool Jams refers to this as the Moisture Transference System (MTS).

Overview of Cool Jams

I didn’t document the unboxing of the product this time around since the shipment was kept simple and the package was really small. I received my Cool Jams in a white plastic envelope shipping bag, and inside it was the top and bottom of my pajamas, both folded neatly. I’m someone who definitely likes more extravagant packaging, and branded packaging is even better still but you will not get that here, or perhaps that is only the case for small orders. Regardless, I can still appreciate the company’s ability to keep it simple and not utilize more material than needed to ship such a small item. If you’re an Amazon Prime member then I’m sure you’ve had moments where you received one or two small items in a massive cardboard box. Sometimes there just has to be a middle ground. Minimal packaging isn’t always a bad thing.

Your Cooljams Options

One of the things that initially got my attention was the crazy amount of pajama options that Cool Jams provides you with. And if some of those options seem inadequate, then they also have a MIX AND MATCH section, where they sell top pieces and bottom pieces separately. So, I’ll take me as an example: I’m a size Small in my torso, but a size Medium in my bottom half. Having the ability to choose is amazing because I get to arrange a perfectly fitting pajama set. Otherwise, I would have had to purchase a set in a size Medium, with pants that fit great and a medium cami top that was too big. I’m really pleased that they let customers mix it up if they feel so inclined.

???? As a side note for ladies:

NO ADJUSTABLE STRAPS

The cami top you can see me wearing in the photos and video, doesn’t have adjustable straps. Measurement-wise, I’m lucky that this happened to work out just fine for me but if you often find you need to make adjustments, be sure to double check. I checked their website and it looks like no pajamas come with adjustable straps. It’s not a problem unless it’s a problem. Just be mindful of this when you’re order and be sure to try on the top as soon as you get it to make sure the fit is correct.

BUILT IN SHELF BRA (in some cases)

The other thing is that some of the pajamas come with a built in shelf bra. This is also the case with my cami top. If you don’t like these things, be careful and make sure the item you’re ordering doesn’t have it. On any product page, if you’re skimming, you can easily find what you’re looking for by hitting CTRL + F (if you’re using a PC) or COMMAND + F (if you’re using a MAC), then type in “bra” and if there’s no indication of the word “bra” existing on the webpage (usually it’s highlighted for you), then it means that particular product doesn’t have it and you’re in the clear.

— The color saturation of the fabric is rich

Upon opening the package, one thing that I liked immediately was the deep saturation of the color of the pajamas. I ordered black pajamas but as we all know, black can come in many (usually undesired) shades. Most of which are just never black enough. Cool Jams getting this aesthetic detail right is already awesome. Yay!

— They smell fresh and refreshing (out of the box and even several days after)

In addition to that, the pajamas have a certain scentone that I find interestingly refreshing. They smell a little like incense to me but not entirely. Some people might think of how incense burns but it smells more like incense before it’s lit. It smells fresh and earthy, it’s honestly very difficult to describe. I’ve heard people mention certain scents associated with unpacking a bed-in-a-box for example but this is FAR different from any chemical smell I’ve ever experienced before. It didn’t smell chemical, it smelled natural. I assume that the scent associated with the pajamas is of the antimicrobial agent that the pajamas are treated with.

— They are Odor Kung Fu Fighting

It takes a few days before they need a wash and that’s because there was an intention there. Cool Jams does mention that the antimicrobial agent used to treat their fabric is powerful yet natural, which is comforting. I’m definitely curious to see how the pajamas perform in terms of odor control over time, being that the antimicrobial agent is said to last for up to 50 washes, which is a pretty substantial number. The antimicrobial agent isn’t just designed for odor, it’s also created to aid with fiber degradation resistance. Surprisingly enough, in terms of odor, I felt that my pajamas didn’t need a wash for the 7 days I wore them every night. That wouldn’t usually be the case with other clothes I’ve worn to bed, so that impressed me.

— It’s a premium moisture-wicking fabric

To answer the question of whether or not Cool Jams can take the heat, the answer is definitely YES. My most recent living situation includes a home without air conditioning and when working at night and sitting at the computer, working in the Cool Jams pajama pants felt more ideal than anything else. During sleep, I have woken up one night sweating but not sweating in the way I’m used to. I didn’t feel like I just stepped out of the shower. I felt all right. I do see and feel the difference that the fabric makes when sweat is present on the body and I do believe the pajamas are effective in wicking moisture, just as they say they will. The one night that I woke up in the middle of the night sweating, by morning, I was totally fresh and dry. That rarely happens!

— Super duper lightweight

The Cool Jams material is such a pleasant thing to feel against your skill. It’s light, airy, just barely there. There is no doubt that it’s a premium fabric but to find that in a fabric that is this lightweight is rare. That would explain the price though.

— They are the future! ???? ????

The fabric used to create these pajamas really is soft like cotton but it’s cool to know that it’s far from itwhat these pajamas are made of is so much more technologically advanced. We can thank science for Cool Jams.

— That 30 day thing

You have 30 days to test drive these babies yourself and if sleeping hot is your problem, then I’d encourage you to consider it. That 30 day thing is: “If you are not satisfied with your sleepwear products for any reason you may return or exchange your item within 30 days.”

I see sleeping cool in your future.

Note: Since the fabric is technically a microfiber, it’s best to air dry your pajamas after washing them. This will ensure their longevity. If you do throw them in the dryer, be sure to use the “no heat” setting but be mindful of the fact that the pajamas could end up quite staticky, so use caution. For those who are anti-static (meaning it’s one of your pet peeves) you already know what to do: Use a clothing line to dry your pajamas instead.
