A mattress pad, also commonly known as a mattress topper, is a specialized bedding accessory designed to enhance the comfort and support of a mattress. It is a thin layer of cushioning material that is placed on top of a mattress, providing an additional barrier between the sleeper and the mattress surface. This extra layer is intended to improve the overall sleep experience by offering enhanced softness, support, and temperature regulation.

The primary purpose of a mattress pad is to modify the feel of a mattress to better suit the preferences and needs of the sleeper. It can transform a firm mattress into a softer and more comfortable surface, or provide additional firmness to a mattress that is too soft. By adjusting the level of firmness, a mattress pad can help alleviate pressure points and promote spinal alignment, leading to a more restful and rejuvenating sleep.

Mattress pads are typically made from various materials, including memory foam, latex, down alternative, or cotton. Each material offers distinct advantages and characteristics. Memory foam mattress pads, for instance, conform to the body’s contours, providing exceptional pressure relief and reducing motion transfer. Latex mattress pads, on the other hand, offer excellent support, breathability, and durability. Down alternative and cotton pads are often sought after for their hypoallergenic properties and breathability.

In addition to enhancing comfort, mattress pads can also serve as a protective barrier for the underlying mattress. They help safeguard the mattress against spills, stains, allergens, and general wear and tear, extending the lifespan of the mattress itself. Some mattress pads also feature waterproof or moisture-wicking properties, making them especially useful for individuals with children, pets, or those prone to nighttime accidents.

When selecting a mattress pad, factors such as thickness, density, and materials should be carefully considered. Thicker pads generally offer more significant cushioning, while denser materials provide enhanced support. It is crucial to choose a mattress pad that complements the existing mattress and caters to individual sleep preferences.

In conclusion, a mattress pad is a valuable bedding accessory that can elevate the sleeping experience by adding an extra layer of comfort and support. It allows sleepers to customize the feel of their mattress while providing protection and longevity. Whether seeking enhanced softness, support, or temperature regulation, a well-chosen mattress pad can contribute to a night of restful and revitalizing sleep.

Mattress Pads Can Breathe New Life Into an Old Mattress

Furthermore, mattress pads offer a cost-effective alternative to purchasing an entirely new mattress. Instead of investing in a brand-new bed, individuals can opt for a mattress pad to address specific comfort concerns or revitalize an aging mattress. This not only saves money but also reduces waste by extending the lifespan of the existing mattress.

When it comes to maintenance, mattress pads are generally easy to care for. Most pads can be conveniently removed and machine-washed, allowing for effortless cleaning and maintenance of a fresh sleeping surface. It is advisable to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and care to ensure the longevity and performance of the mattress pad.

In recent years, the mattress pad market has witnessed significant innovation and diversification. Manufacturers have introduced advanced features such as temperature-regulating technologies, moisture-wicking properties, and hypoallergenic materials. These advancements cater to the evolving needs and preferences of consumers, providing solutions for issues like night sweats, allergies, and sleep disturbances.

Before purchasing a mattress pad, it is essential to research and consider various factors. These include the desired level of comfort and support, the specific features required, and compatibility with the existing mattress. Reading customer reviews and seeking expert advice can also help in making an informed decision.

In conclusion, a mattress pad is a valuable addition to any sleep environment, offering an array of benefits such as enhanced comfort, support, and mattress protection. With their versatility, affordability, and ease of maintenance, mattress pads have become a popular choice among individuals seeking to optimize their sleep experience without the expense of replacing their entire mattress. By selecting a suitable mattress pad that aligns with personal preferences and needs, individuals can enjoy a rejuvenating and restful sleep night after night.

Mattress Pads for Increased Comfort

Moreover, the benefits of using a mattress pad extend beyond personal comfort and mattress protection. Studies have shown that a good night’s sleep plays a crucial role in overall health and well-being. By improving the quality of sleep, a mattress pad can have a positive impact on various aspects of life.

One of the key advantages of a mattress pad is its ability to alleviate pressure points on the body. A well-designed pad can distribute body weight evenly, reducing the strain on joints and muscles. This can be especially beneficial for individuals who suffer from conditions such as arthritis or back pain. By providing targeted support and cushioning, a mattress pad promotes proper spinal alignment and relieves discomfort, enabling sleepers to wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Additionally, mattress pads can enhance the sleep environment by regulating temperature. Many pads incorporate advanced technologies that help dissipate heat and moisture, preventing the build-up of sweat and creating a cool and comfortable sleeping surface. This is particularly advantageous for individuals who tend to sleep hot or experience night sweats, as it helps maintain a more optimal sleep temperature throughout the night.

Furthermore, mattress pads can contribute to improved hygiene and allergy control. They act as a barrier against allergens such as dust mites, dander, and pollen, minimizing the potential triggers for allergies or asthma. Individuals with sensitivities or respiratory conditions can benefit from a mattress pad that is specifically designed to be hypoallergenic and resistant to common allergens. This promotes a cleaner and healthier sleep environment, reducing the risk of allergic reactions and ensuring a more restful night’s sleep.

In conclusion, the mattress pad is an invaluable accessory that enhances the sleep experience in numerous ways. By providing customized comfort, support, and temperature regulation, it aids in relieving pressure points and promoting proper spinal alignment. Furthermore, it serves as a protective barrier for the mattress, prolonging its lifespan and reducing the need for premature replacement. The benefits extend beyond personal comfort, as mattress pads contribute to overall health and well-being by improving the quality of sleep and creating a cleaner, allergen-resistant sleep environment. For individuals seeking to optimize their sleep and wake up feeling revitalized, a well-chosen mattress pad is a wise investment.

Puffy Mattress Protector

Mattress Pad vs. Mattress Protector

When it comes to safeguarding your mattress and ensuring its longevity, both a mattress pad and a mattress protector play distinct roles. While they serve similar purposes, understanding the differences between the two can help determine if you need both for your specific needs.

A mattress pad, as mentioned earlier, primarily focuses on enhancing comfort and modifying the feel of the mattress. It acts as an additional layer of cushioning, providing softness or support depending on your preferences. While some mattress pads may offer limited protection against spills and stains, their primary function is to enhance your sleep experience rather than act as a robust protective barrier.

On the other hand, a mattress protector is specifically designed to shield your mattress from a wide range of potential threats. Its primary objective is to provide comprehensive protection against spills, stains, allergens, dust mites, bed bugs, and other potential contaminants. A mattress protector acts as a physical barrier, preventing liquids and particles from seeping into the mattress and compromising its cleanliness and structural integrity. It is typically made of waterproof or water-resistant materials, providing an extra layer of defense against accidents or spills.

Considering the distinct functions of both accessories, it is beneficial to have both a mattress pad and a mattress protector. By using a mattress pad, you can customize the comfort and support of your mattress to suit your needs, enhancing the overall sleep experience. Simultaneously, a mattress protector ensures the long-term protection and cleanliness of your mattress, safeguarding it against stains, spills, allergens, and other potential contaminants.

While it is possible to find combination products that offer the features of both a mattress pad and a mattress protector, it is important to evaluate the specific features and qualities of each accessory. Investing in separate, specialized products ensures that you can optimize both the comfort and protection of your mattress.

In summary, a mattress pad and a mattress protector serve distinct purposes. A mattress pad enhances comfort and modifies the feel of your mattress, while a mattress protector provides comprehensive protection against spills, stains, allergens, and other contaminants. To ensure the best possible sleep experience and mattress longevity, it is advisable to use both accessories in combination, tailoring the comfort of your mattress with a pad while safeguarding its cleanliness and integrity with a protector.

Adopting a new sleep position, like sleeping on your back, can be a great way to improve your overall sleep quality and health. Back sleeping is often recommended for alleviating certain types of pain and preventing wrinkles. However, it can seem a daunting task if you’re habitually a side or stomach sleeper. Here are a few steps to guide you towards comfortably sleeping on your back.

1. Invest in the Right Equipment

Quality, supportive pillows and mattresses are key when it comes to adopting a new sleep position. Opt for a firm, supportive mattress that contours to the natural curvature of your spine. A pillow that supports your neck without elevating your head too much will also help. Remember, comfort is subjective, so trial different options to see what works best for you.

2. Position Yourself Correctly

Start by lying flat on your back, with your legs extended and your arms down by your sides. Avoid crossing your arms or legs, as this can lead to discomfort and restless sleep. Place a small, rolled towel under your knees to maintain the natural curve of your spine and relieve any pressure. Your neck and lower back should be comfortable and not strained.

3. Build a Pillow Barricade

If you find yourself constantly rolling onto your side during the night, try building a pillow barricade around your body. Surrounding yourself with pillows can act as a gentle reminder to stay on your back when you’re half asleep.

4. Practice a Regular Sleep Schedule

A consistent sleep schedule can enhance your overall sleep quality and make it easier to adjust to a new sleep position. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night and try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.

5. Adopt Relaxation Techniques

Before bedtime, practice relaxation techniques to help your body get ready for sleep. Deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or even a warm bath can help prepare your body for sleep. The more relaxed you are before bed, the easier it will be to fall asleep on your back.

6. Be Patient and Consistent

Shifting your sleep position isn’t an overnight change. It can take time for your body to adjust and feel comfortable. Be patient with yourself and consistent in your efforts.

By following these steps, you’ll be on your way to a healthier sleep posture. As with any significant change, listen to your body. If back sleeping causes discomfort or exacerbates sleep problems, it might not be the right sleep position for you. Always consult with a healthcare provider if you have persistent sleep problems or if you have other health conditions, like sleep apnea, that might affect your sleep position.

Benefits of Back Sleeping

After mastering the basic steps to sleeping on your back, it’s important to understand some of the reasons behind this sleep position’s touted benefits.

Reduced Neck and Back Pain

By sleeping on your back, your spine remains in a neutral alignment which reduces the chance of experiencing neck and back pain. This position can relieve pressure points throughout your body, aiding in overall pain reduction.

Fewer Wrinkles

When you sleep on your side or stomach, your face is often pressed against the pillow, causing potential sleep lines and wrinkles over time. Back sleeping eliminates this issue, as your face remains free from any direct pressure.

Decreased Acid Reflux

For those dealing with acid reflux or GERD, back sleeping can be beneficial as it prevents stomach acid from coming back up the esophagus. Keeping your head elevated above your stomach helps keep acid reflux at bay.

Improved Overall Health

Back sleeping can improve the health of your respiratory system and reduce the risk of developing certain types of sleep disorders like sleep apnea. In this position, your head is elevated and your airway remains more open, enabling better breathing.

To conclude, although sleeping on your back might take some getting used to, it holds the potential to enhance your sleep quality and overall health. And, while it may not be the most common sleep position, its benefits make it worth considering. Always remember that individual comfort levels vary, and it is essential to choose a sleep position that allows you to rest comfortably throughout the night. If you experience persistent sleep problems or if you’re unsure about the best sleep position for you, always seek advice from a healthcare professional.

Cons of Back Sleeping

With the benefits of back sleeping illuminated, it’s equally essential to highlight certain conditions where back sleeping might not be advisable.

Sleep Apnea and Snoring

While for some, back sleeping can alleviate sleep apnea, for others it might exacerbate the condition. Back sleeping can cause the tongue to block the windpipe, leading to snoring or dangerous pauses in breathing.

Late Pregnancy

Pregnant women, especially in their third trimester, are often advised against back sleeping. This position can put pressure on the vena cava – a major vein that returns blood to the heart, potentially reducing blood flow to the fetus.

Chronic Back Pain

Despite its potential to alleviate mild back pain, for those with chronic back issues, this position may not be ideal. It could put too much pressure on the spinal cord, worsening the pain.

As we delve deeper into the nuances of sleep positions, it becomes clear that back sleeping, while beneficial for many, is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Individual health circumstances play a vital role in determining the optimal sleep position. Thus, self-awareness and professional advice are integral to optimizing your sleep posture.

Adopting a new sleep position, particularly back sleeping, requires patience and commitment. It’s a change that is not easily made but could yield significant benefits for many people. As you embark on this journey towards better sleep health, remain patient with yourself. Allow your body the time to adjust and listen to it when it signals discomfort.

Sleep, a universally necessary act, has profound impacts on our wellbeing. By optimizing our sleep position, we can influence our sleep quality and, in turn, our overall health. From reducing pain to preventing wrinkles, back sleeping offers myriad potential benefits. The journey towards successful back sleeping can be a nuanced process, but with patience and the right guidance, it is within your reach.

Final Thoughts on Back Sleeping

In conclusion, the art of back sleeping holds promise for improved sleep quality and overall health. While it may not be suitable for everyone, those without underlying conditions that contraindicate this sleep position can benefit greatly. The key lies in understanding the proper techniques, investing in supportive equipment, and being consistent in your efforts.

Remember, quality sleep is a vital component of a healthy lifestyle, and the way you position your body during sleep plays a significant role. By adopting back sleeping, you can potentially alleviate neck and back pain, reduce the risk of wrinkles, and even improve respiratory function. However, it’s crucial to be aware of any pre-existing conditions that may require alternative sleep positions.

As with any lifestyle change, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized guidance. They can assess your unique circumstances and provide tailored advice. By combining their expertise with your commitment, you can pave the way for a more restful and rejuvenating sleep experience.

So, embrace the challenge of back sleeping, and let it guide you towards enhanced well-being. Make the conscious choice to prioritize your sleep health, and may your nights be filled with deep, rejuvenating slumber.

With a quarter of a century of experience in the mattress industry under our belt, we’re thrilled to present an in-depth analysis of the Pillar Mattress. This formidable sleep solution earns an impressive 9.5/10 on our comfort and pressure relief scale. Our comprehensive review explores the facets of this uniquely crafted hybrid mattress that stands 15″ tall, boasting three generous layers of gel foam, memory foam, and cooling graphite foam.

An Overview of the Pillar Mattress

Retailing at $1799 for a queen size, the Pillar Mattress is available in two comfort levels: Medium Soft and Medium Firm. We put the Medium Soft variant to the test in our sleep lab. With its lifetime warranty and a 120-night, no-questions-asked trial period, the Pillar Mattress immediately establishes itself as a luxurious and customer-friendly choice.

Upon first contact, we were pleasantly surprised by the mattress’s luxurious feel and body contouring capabilities, especially well-suited for side sleepers like us. Our team greatly appreciates an extra “poofy” quilted pillow top as long as it does not compromise the mattress’s stability, and the Pillar Mattress ticks this box impeccably.

What sets the Pillar Mattress apart from the rest is the use of graphite-infused memory foam. This innovative material is proficient in heat dissipation, preventing any discomfort caused by the accumulation of body heat. This foam is also anti-microbial, odor-resistant, and durable.

An Expert Dive into the Pillar Sleep Mattress Performance

Our meticulous 10-point test on the Medium Soft Pillar Sleep Mattress yielded impressive results. It hit the sweet spot between firmness and softness, providing an ethereal, cloud-like sleep experience distinct from a traditional innerspring mattress.

Diving into the Construction

The ample layers of foam strategically positioned above the 8″ pocketed coil system certainly piqued our interest. The coil section features specific zoned areas, including stiffer coils around your hips and lower back. This design drastically reduces compression and rutting, making it a commendable choice for edge-of-the-bed sitting.

Our evaluation also revealed that the Pillar Sleep Mattress expertly maintains spinal alignment, thereby preventing potential discomfort during sleep. This is largely due to the firmer zoned torso area that prevents your back from bowing.

The CertiPUR-US® Commitment

The Pillar Sleep Mattress’s commitment to safety and quality is noteworthy. The use of CertiPUR-US® certified foams ensures that your mattress is free from harmful chemicals and emissions.

pillar sleep certipur

With the Pillar Sleep Mattress, you can rest easy knowing that your sleep sanctuary is both comfortable and safe.

Delving into the Details

Our bedroom environment testing offered fascinating insights into the Pillar Sleep Mattress’s performance. Scoring was based on a blend of objective and subjective interpretations of data points.

We were particularly taken with the quilted pillow top’s exquisite craftsmanship, the memory and support foam’s density, and the innovative use of graphite-infused foam. Together, these components ensure the Pillar Sleep Mattress does not falter in pressure relief or temperature regulation.

Advanced Cooling System: The Pillar Sleep Mattress comes with the enhanced GlacierICE fabric for the pillow top exterior. This fabric is ingrained with Phase Change Technology (PCT), designed to actively draw body heat, convert it into cooler energy and deliver an immediate, noticeable cool touch. Given these attributes, it’s safe to say the Pillar Sleep Mattress is an excellent choice for individuals who sleep hot or experience hot flashes due to post-menopausal symptoms or other medical conditions.

Smooth Movement and Superior Edge Support: The medium-soft variant of the Pillar Sleep Mattress provides a buoyant support that counteracts any significant sinkage. This enables seamless movement, making it perfect for side and back sleepers who frequently adjust their position during sleep. I experienced a profound 7-hour sleep on the Pillar Sleep Mattress without disruption, leaving me more rejuvenated than when sleeping on my significantly firmer Tempur-Pedic.

The mattress’s quilted pillow top, coupled with the two lower layers of memory foam and graphite foam, works excellently to minimize motion transfer. This feature is particularly beneficial for restless sleepers who share their bed with a partner or pets.

Comfortable Intimacy: The Pillar Sleep Mattress accommodates couples comfortably, ensuring no undue sinking that might require struggling to get out of the mattress’s middle. The mattress has an approximate weight limit of 250lbs per person, translating to a combined weight capacity of about 500lbs. It’s a compelling choice for intimacy due to the cozy, embracing sensation it imparts, potentially providing better stability during vigorous activities. Although the covering material is somewhat smooth, using a mattress protector and cotton sheets of 300-500 thread count could enhance the grip.

Layered Design: Typically, mattress designers utilize a 2-inch thickness for each layer. However, Pillar innovatively amalgamates three distinct 2-inch layers, summing up to a total of 6 inches, thereby maximizing pressure relief. Perfecting this layered design is akin to creating an ideal cake recipe; it necessitates a deep understanding of foam densities. Further insights about ILD and foam density can be found here.

Material Composition: Above the pocketed coil unit, Pillar employs three layers of specific foam types: graphite-infused memory foam, pressure-relieving foam, and a sturdier layer of high-density support foam. The exterior layer, which serves as the body contact surface, is a quilted pillow top made from a hypoallergenic blend of cotton and rayon.

A cross-sectional diagram of a Pillar Sleep mattress shows multiple layers. From top to bottom: a soft white top layer, a yellow foam layer, a light blue layer, a dark blue coil layer, and a dark gray base. Text reads "6" of Comfort Foams." The mattress is labeled "Pillow Top.

In the vast expanse of human history, no invention has been more intimately linked to our daily lives than the humble mattress. The evolution of the mattress has shaped not just how we sleep, but how we live, work, and interact with one another. One notable period in this evolution is the 1980s—a decade marked by significant change and advancement in the mattress industry. Let’s venture back to this time of neon colors and synth-pop to explore the crucial transformations in mattress technology, materials, and marketing.

Rising Foam Tides: Memory Foam’s Entry into the Market

One of the most substantial changes to the mattress industry in the 80s was the introduction of memory foam, developed by NASA in the 1970s for aircraft cushions. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that the technology found its way into our bedrooms.

The company leading the charge was Tempur-Pedic, who licensed the foam technology from NASA in the early 1980s. The so-called “Tempur Foam” was marketed as a revolution in comfort and support, uniquely contouring to the body and offering unprecedented pressure relief. However, memory foam mattresses were prohibitively expensive at first, limiting their accessibility to most consumers throughout the decade.

A Bounce in Every Bedroom: The Waterbed Phenomenon

Perhaps no other piece of 80s furniture is as symbolic as the waterbed. Originally conceived in the late 60s by Charles Hall as a project for his master’s degree in design, waterbeds reached their peak popularity in the 1980s, comprising about 20% of the mattress market. These buoyant beds were seen as modern, even slightly rebellious, a distinctive blend of comfort and counterculture.

However, as time went on, the impracticalities of waterbeds became apparent. They were heavy, difficult to move, and prone to leaks. Moreover, the water’s constant motion could lead to sleep disruptions, contrary to Hall’s original intentions. By the end of the 80s, the waterbed fad began to wane, overtaken by emerging mattress technologies.

Marketing for the Masses: Strategic Branding in the Mattress Industry

A key aspect of the 1980s mattress industry was the increased focus on marketing and branding. Sealy’s “Proud Supporter of You” and Serta’s “We Make the World’s Best Mattress” campaigns reflected the decade’s spirit—catchy, bold, and consumer-focused. Mattress firms understood that they weren’t just selling a product; they were selling the promise of a better night’s sleep and improved well-being.

In the 80s, retailers also began bundling mattresses and box springs into a single purchase, branded as a “sleep system” or “bed set.” This practice, now a norm, was an innovative sales technique back then.

Regulation and Standardization: Setting the Industry’s Safety Standards

The 1980s also saw a significant move towards improved safety standards in the mattress industry. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued regulations in 1987 requiring all mattresses to meet flammability standards. These measures, while seemingly commonplace now, greatly enhanced consumer safety, setting the stage for more stringent regulations to follow in subsequent decades.

The Art of Sleep Science: Research & Consumer Awareness

Research into sleep science became increasingly popular during the 80s, changing the way mattresses were marketed and sold. The public was becoming more educated about the importance of quality sleep, and companies responded accordingly. They started to promote features such as ergonomics, body contouring, and pressure relief, rather than simply

In the mid-80s, research began to shed light on conditions like sleep apnea and insomnia, sparking conversations about how mattresses could impact these issues. This newfound emphasis on health and sleep quality also marked the initial steps towards the creation of custom mattresses, designed to cater to specific health requirements.

The Rise of King-Sized Comfort: Size Does Matter

The 1980s saw an interesting shift in consumer preferences towards larger mattress sizes. The introduction of the king and queen-sized mattresses signaled a departure from the previously standard double bed, a change inspired by the burgeoning sense of individualism and personal space in society.

This expansion in mattress dimensions wasn’t merely a passing trend; it reflected the growing desire for personal comfort and luxury in the domestic sphere. The king-size mattress became synonymous with opulence and comfort, fostering a sense of the bedroom as a private sanctuary rather than a mere functional space.

In Conclusion: A Decade of Transformation

The 1980s was undoubtedly a period of tremendous change for the mattress industry. From the advent of memory foam and the rise and fall of waterbeds, to the new focus on marketing and branding, and the increased awareness of sleep science, these shifts had a profound impact on how we perceive and value our sleep.

The heightened emphasis on safety and health, the drive for personal comfort and luxury, and the remarkable innovations in technology have continued to shape the mattress industry well into the 21st century. Even as we now slumber on smart beds and eco-friendly mattresses, the echoes of the 1980s still reverberate in the bedrooms of today, reminding us of a decade that forever transformed the way we sleep.

Fostering Entrepreneurship: Small Business Boom in the Mattress Industry

The shift in societal values during the 80s, which prioritized consumer choice and individualism, gave rise to an unexpected boon in the mattress industry. Small businesses started to spring up nationwide, offering locally-made, custom mattresses that appealed to an increasingly discerning customer base. These local mattress stores served as an alternative to the dominant large manufacturers and tapped into the growing consumer appetite for specialized, personal products.

Mattresses as Status Symbols: The Luxury Market Emerges

As the decade progressed, mattresses started to be viewed not merely as utilitarian objects but also as status symbols. Luxury brands, such as Stearns & Foster and Aireloom, gained prominence, offering high-end mattresses that were marketed as the epitome of comfort and sophistication. Crafted with exotic materials like silk and cashmere, these mattresses were priced well beyond the reach of the average consumer, further establishing them as luxury items.

Advancements in Innerspring Technology: Towards Better Support

The 1980s also saw substantial improvements in innerspring technology, which had long been the cornerstone of the mattress industry. Manufacturers started experimenting with various coil configurations to optimize support and comfort. Innovations included the use of individually pocketed springs, which helped to reduce motion transfer and improve body contouring. Despite the introduction of memory foam, innerspring mattresses remained popular throughout the 80s due to their durability and familiarity among consumers.

The Beginning of the End for Flipping: The No-Flip Revolution

In a less celebrated but significant development, the late 80s marked the beginning of the “no-flip” mattress revolution. Until this point, it was standard advice to regularly flip and rotate your mattress to ensure even wear. However, with the advent of new construction methods and materials, manufacturers started to design one-sided mattresses that didn’t require flipping. This convenience appealed to consumers and started a trend that would gain traction in the following decades.

Wrapping Up: The Legacy of the 80s Mattress Industry

In examining the 1980s, it becomes evident that this was a decade of substantial change for the mattress industry. The intersection of technological advancements, changing societal values, increased emphasis on health and safety, and marketing innovations collectively forged a new path for the industry.

The period’s influence extends beyond the introduction of specific products or trends. The 80s fostered an environment that prompted consumers to reassess their relationship with sleep and the tools that facilitate it. The shift in perspective from viewing mattresses as a mere necessity to recognizing them as integral to our health and well-being has forever shaped the trajectory of the industry.

As we lie down on our beds tonight, let’s spare a thought for the 1980s — a decade that redefined the way we sleep and, in doing so, significantly impacted our overall quality of life.

Frequently Asked Questions About 1980s Mattress Evolution: Must-Have Trends and Comfort

Was a memory foam mattress from the 1980s worth it?

Initially, memory foam mattresses were largely cost-prohibitive for most consumers in the 1980s due to their high production costs. However, they offered groundbreaking comfort and pressure relief by contouring to the body, a significant advancement in sleep technology at the time. The early adoption by pioneering companies like Tempur-Pedic set the stage for memory foam's future accessibility and popularity.

Who was a waterbed from the 1980s best for?

Waterbeds in the 1980s appealed to individuals seeking a modern, counter-culture bedroom experience, merging comfort with a unique aesthetic. They offered a distinct floating sensation that some found very relaxing. However, their practical drawbacks like bulkiness, weight, and susceptibility to leaks ultimately limited their long-term appeal for many.

How did 1980s mattress marketing compare to today's strategies?

The 1980s saw mattress manufacturers shift towards bold, catchy, and consumer-focused branding, similar to how Yawnder focuses on consumer well-being today. Companies like Sealy and Serta used memorable taglines to promote health and restorative sleep, a direct contrast to earlier, more product-focused advertising. This era also introduced the concept of selling complete 'sleep systems' that included both mattresses and box springs.

What were the main downsides of a waterbed?

The primary downsides of waterbeds included their significant bulkiness and weight, making them difficult to move and set up. They also posed a risk of leaks, which could lead to significant inconvenience and damage. These practical issues ultimately overshadowed their initial appeal and led to their decline in popularity by the end of the decade.

Where could someone try a memory foam mattress in the 1980s?

In the 1980s, trying a memory foam mattress would have been limited to specialist retailers or early showrooms associated with companies such as Tempur-Pedic. Unlike today, where you can visit a place like the Yawnder Encinitas showroom to experience various mattress types, early memory foam was a new and exclusive product. Its high cost also meant it wasn't widely available for casual testing in every furniture store.

Were 1980s mattresses safe from a flammability standpoint?

The 1980s marked a significant step in mattress safety with the 1987 regulations from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) requiring mattresses to meet flammability standards. Before these regulations, safety standards were less stringent, making the CPSC's intervention a crucial advancement. These mandates established a baseline for consumer protection that has continued to evolve.

Understanding Mattress Prices: An Essential Consideration

Choosing the right mattress is a critical decision that impacts your life every day. Yet, navigating the complex landscape of mattress pricing is no easy task. It involves understanding the value of different mattress types, materials, sizes, brands, and a myriad of other factors that contribute to the final price. This guide unravels these components, enabling you to make an informed purchase that meets your needs without breaking the bank.

Decoding Mattress Types and Their Costs

Let’s embark on a journey to understand the different types of mattresses and their pricing structures.

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses are time-tested classics. The cost varies significantly depending on factors like coil count, coil type, and additional features such as pillow tops or euro tops. On average, expect to pay between $600 and $1,200 for a queen-sized innerspring mattress.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses offer pressure relief and contouring support. Their pricing often depends on foam density and thickness, with high-end models costing upwards of $2,000. However, many quality memory foam mattresses can be found in the $600-$1,200 range.

Latex Mattresses

Latex mattresses, known for their durability and natural materials, come at a premium price. Synthetic latex options are cheaper, but natural or organic latex mattresses can range from $1,500 to over $2,500.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine innerspring and foam or latex layers to offer a balance of support and comfort. These mattresses range from $1,000 to $2,000 due to their complex construction and high-quality materials.

Airbed Mattresses

Airbeds offer customizable firmness, with many models featuring dual-firmness settings. This high-tech comfort comes at a cost, with prices typically ranging from $1,500 to $2,500.

Impact of Mattress Sizes on Cost

After understanding mattress types, it’s crucial to consider the effect of size on mattress prices. From twin to California king, each size impacts the final cost. On average, upgrading to a larger size can increase the price by $200-$500.

Navigating Brand Influence on Mattress Pricing

Brands can significantly influence mattress pricing. Premium brands often offer extended warranties, better customer service, or unique features that justify their higher costs. However, online direct-to-consumer brands can provide similar quality at lower prices by eliminating middlemen.

Mattress Quality and Its Impact on Cost

Quality components often come at higher prices, but they can offer better comfort, support, and longevity. Look for high-density foams, high coil counts in innerspring mattresses, natural materials in latex mattresses, and overall robust construction.

Buying Considerations: Discounts and Sales

Don’t forget the impact of discounts and sales on mattress pricing. Holidays and off-season sales can offer significant savings. Additionally, don’t shy away from negotiating with salespeople in brick-and-mortar stores.

The Price of Sleep: Additional Costs to Consider

A mattress purchase often comes with hidden costs, such as removal of your old mattress or delivery and setup for the new one. Consider these additional expenses when planning your budget.

Decoding the Relationship Between Mattress Lifespan and Cost

Another significant factor when considering mattress costs is its lifespan. Buying a mattress is a long-term investment; therefore, understanding how the mattress’s longevity relates to its price is essential. A mattress may seem cost-effective at first glance, but a shorter lifespan can mean higher costs in the long run.

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses tend to have a shorter lifespan compared to other types. The average lifespan of an innerspring mattress is around seven to ten years. If you opt for a lower-priced innerspring mattress, it could end up costing more over its lifespan due to potential needs for earlier replacement.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses are known for their durability, with many lasting well beyond ten years. High-density foams are especially durable, although you can expect to pay more for these mattresses initially. But considering the extended lifespan, the cost over the years could end up being lower.

Latex Mattresses

Latex mattresses offer the best longevity, often lasting more than 15 years, particularly if you opt for natural or organic latex. While these mattresses may come with a higher upfront cost, their extended lifespan can make them a cost-effective choice in the long run.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses, with their combination of springs and foam or latex, usually have a lifespan similar to memory foam mattresses, around 10 to 12 years. The lifespan can depend significantly on the quality of the materials used.

Airbed Mattresses

Airbeds’ lifespan can vary widely. While the air chambers can last well beyond 10 years, the comfort layers may need to be replaced earlier, leading to additional costs.

Mattress Warranty: An Overlooked Aspect of Mattress Costs

When discussing mattress costs, it’s crucial to consider the warranty. A mattress with a long, comprehensive warranty might cost more upfront but could save you significant expenses in the future. Pay particular attention to what the warranty covers, such as sagging, manufacturing defects, and the cost of replacement parts.

The Real Cost of a Good Night’s Sleep: Value for Money

Ultimately, the cost of a mattress should be weighed against the value it brings. The right mattress can significantly improve your sleep quality and, by extension, your overall health and productivity. While it’s essential to consider all the factors mentioned above, the real value of a mattress lies in the comfort and restful sleep it provides.

Remember, there’s more to a mattress than its price tag. Consider your personal needs, the mattress’s longevity, warranty, and the quality of sleep it can provide. A comprehensive understanding of these factors will ensure that you choose a mattress that’s worth every penny.

From Economy to Luxury: A Spectrum of Mattress Costs

Like any consumer product, mattresses span a broad spectrum from economy to luxury, and understanding this range is essential to identifying the best option for your budget and needs. Let’s delve into this spectrum.

Economy Mattresses

Economy mattresses, typically priced under $500, can be a viable choice for those on a tight budget or for temporary use. While these mattresses may lack some of the advanced features and luxurious materials found in higher-end models, there are still quality options available that provide adequate comfort and support.

Mid-range Mattresses

Mid-range mattresses, generally in the $500-$1,500 price bracket, offer a balance of quality and affordability. These mattresses often include features such as improved edge support, specialized cooling technologies, and better motion isolation. They may be made of memory foam, latex, or a hybrid of materials and deliver a notable step up in terms of comfort and durability.

Luxury Mattresses

Luxury mattresses, costing upwards of $1,500, are the pinnacle of comfort and quality. They are often made with premium materials such as natural latex, organic cotton, or high-end memory foam. Luxury mattresses also tend to have more layers, superior edge support, advanced cooling features, and extended warranties.

While the cost is significantly higher, the level of comfort, longevity, and the added features may make the investment worthwhile for some.

The Cost of Eco-Friendly and Organic Mattresses

As awareness of environmental and health issues increases, many consumers are turning towards eco-friendly and organic mattresses. These mattresses are often made with natural materials like organic cotton, wool, or natural latex, and are free from harmful chemicals.

Eco-friendly and organic mattresses come at a higher cost, due to the expensive materials and the rigorous processes involved in certification. Prices can range from $1,000 to $3,000 or more. However, for those prioritizing sustainability and natural materials, the extra cost might be deemed a worthy investment.

American-Made vs. Foreign-Made Mattresses: A Comparative Analysis

As consumers, we’re constantly faced with the decision of choosing between locally-made and imported products. When it comes to mattresses, this decision can impact not only our sleep quality, but also our health, environment, and economy. Let’s delve into the details to compare American-made and foreign-made mattresses.

Quality Control and Standards

In terms of quality control and standards, American-made mattresses often have the upper hand. The United States has stringent regulations and standards for mattress production, which are enforced by agencies such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

These regulations mandate that all mattresses sold in the U.S., regardless of where they are made, should meet certain flammability standards and limit the use of harmful chemicals. However, when a mattress is manufactured domestically, it’s easier to ensure compliance with these standards, providing a measure of quality assurance that can be harder to guarantee with imported mattresses.

Material Quality and Durability

While it’s possible to find high-quality mattresses made outside of the U.S., the consistency of material quality and durability can sometimes be more reliable with American-made products. This is largely due to the aforementioned strict regulations and the use of advanced manufacturing technologies.

Additionally, many American-made mattresses prioritize the use of high-quality, often locally sourced, materials. This not only contributes to the durability and comfort of the mattress but can also reduce the environmental impact of transportation.

Economic Impact

Purchasing American-made mattresses can have a positive impact on the domestic economy. It supports local businesses, contributes to job creation, and helps stimulate economic growth.

Environmental Considerations

From an environmental perspective, American-made mattresses can offer advantages. Reduced transportation distances mean less carbon emissions. Additionally, U.S. regulations on waste management and emissions during the manufacturing process are generally stricter than in many other countries, leading to potentially less environmental harm.

Cost Implications

One area where foreign-made mattresses often compete strongly is price. Manufacturing costs in other countries can be lower due to cheaper labor and materials, which can result in lower retail prices.

Mattress Manufacturing in the United States: A State-by-State Analysis

The United States hosts a significant number of mattress manufacturing facilities, driven by a strong domestic demand and a robust export market. The industry is spread across the country, with certain states taking the lead due to their industrial infrastructure, skilled workforce, and logistical advantages. Let’s delve into which state claims the crown for producing the most mattresses.

California: The Leading Contender

California, known for its diverse industrial landscape, is often recognized as the leading state in mattress production. The state’s large population and strong consumer market make it an ideal location for mattress manufacturers. Major brands, including Brentwood Home and Nest Bedding, have manufacturing facilities in California, contributing to its leading position in the industry.

Texas and North Carolina: Strong Contenders

Texas and North Carolina also play prominent roles in the U.S. mattress industry. Texas, with its extensive transportation and logistics network, is home to several mattress manufacturers, including well-known names like Sealy.

North Carolina, known for its rich history in furniture production, naturally extends into mattress manufacturing. The state is home to numerous manufacturers, such as Kingsdown, capitalizing on the area’s expertise in textiles and furniture manufacturing.

Florida and Pennsylvania: Emerging Players

Other states, including Florida and Pennsylvania, are also notable contributors to the mattress manufacturing industry. Both states boast several mattress factories and have seen growth in this sector.

Mlily Compared to Tempurpedic Mattresses

Tempur-Pedic and MLILY are both reputable mattress manufacturers, but they can vary significantly in terms of product offerings and overall quality perception. Here are some of the potential differences between the two brands:

  1. Price Point: Tempur-Pedic is generally positioned as a premium brand. Their mattresses tend to be more expensive, which can sometimes indicate a higher level of quality in terms of materials and construction. MLILY, on the other hand, often offers more budget-friendly options.

  2. Material Quality: Tempur-Pedic is widely known for its proprietary TEMPUR material, a type of memory foam that is designed to provide exceptional comfort and support. The quality of this material is often seen as superior to that of many other memory foams. MLILY also uses memory foam in their mattresses, but it may not have the same recognition or reputation as the TEMPUR material.

  3. Durability: While both brands produce mattresses designed to last for many years, Tempur-Pedic’s higher price point and premium materials often lead to perceptions of greater durability. However, individual experiences can vary, and factors such as how the mattress is used and cared for can significantly impact its lifespan.

  4. Comfort: Comfort is highly subjective and can vary from person to person. Some people may find Tempur-Pedic mattresses to be more comfortable due to their contouring and pressure-relieving properties, while others may prefer the feel of an MLILY mattress.

  5. Country of Origin: Tempur-Pedic mattresses are made in the USA, while MLILY mattresses are made in China. This might factor into perceived quality for some consumers, but it’s worth noting that both brands meet rigorous safety and quality standards.

Among the maze of options, MLILY’s Fusion Ortho Mattress has managed to rise above, solidifying its place as a dependable choice for those in search of a robust, orthopedically focused sleeping surface. After spending several nights on this mattress, we’re prepared to deliver an authoritative review that delves into its performance, comfort, and value for money.

Fusion Ortho is a part of MLILY’s fusion range, which seamlessly combines memory foam with pocket springs to provide both comfort and support. The emphasis here is on Ortho — short for orthopedic — and the mattress indeed lives up to the name. This specific model targets people suffering from back pain or those who prefer a firm surface to rest on.

Upon first glance, the Fusion Ortho exudes a premium look and feel. The quilted top cover gives it an aesthetically pleasing appearance, while the quality of materials used is palpable, promising durability over time. This is further reinforced by the ten-year warranty offered by MLILY, a testament to the confidence they have in their product.

Sleeping on the Fusion Ortho provides a firm support that few other mattresses in the market can match. The memory foam layers adapt to the body’s shape, while the pocket springs underneath provide a firm and sturdy feel. This pairing ensures that your body is adequately supported throughout the night, and the risk of waking up with aches and pains is substantially reduced.

Heat regulation is another area where the Fusion Ortho shines. Thanks to the incorporation of gel memory foam and Airtech border, the mattress provides excellent breathability. This ensures that it remains cool throughout the night, eliminating the discomfort of overheating — a common issue with many memory foam mattresses.

Motion isolation is another impressive feature of this mattress. The individually encased pocket springs work to absorb movement, making it an ideal choice for couples. The tossing and turning of one partner is unlikely to disturb the other, ensuring a peaceful night’s sleep for both.

Despite all its merits, the Fusion Ortho may not be the go-to choice for everyone. Its firmness level leans toward the higher side, which means it may not be the most comfortable option for side sleepers or those who prefer a softer surface.

In terms of price, the Fusion Ortho lands on the higher end of the market. However, considering its exceptional features, top-notch materials, and long-term durability, it offers good value for money.

In summary, the MLILY Fusion Ortho Mattress is a top-tier product offering a fusion of comfort, support, and breathability. Its orthopedic focus stands out, providing a firm sleeping surface that caters to the needs of back pain sufferers. While its firmness may not suit everyone’s preferences, for those in search of an orthopedically designed, high-quality mattress, the Fusion Ortho is undeniably an excellent choice.

The Crystal Cove mattress is a flippable hybrid mattress from Brentwood Home. It is 13 inches thick and has a medium-firm firmness level. The mattress is made with a combination of memory foam, latex, and pocketed coils.

The top side of the mattress has a comfort layer made with charcoal-infused memory foam and latex. The memory foam is designed to conform to your body and relieve pressure points, while the latex is designed to provide bounce and support.

The bottom side of the mattress has a comfort layer made with polyfoam and charcoal-infused memory foam. The polyfoam is designed to provide support, while the memory foam is designed to relieve pressure points.

The support core of the mattress is made with pocketed coils. The pocketed coils are designed to provide contouring support and isolate motion.

The Crystal Cove mattress is a good choice for sleepers who are looking for a medium-firm mattress that provides pressure relief and support. It is also a good choice for sleepers who are looking for a flippable mattress so that they can change the firmness level of the mattress depending on their needs.

Here are some of the benefits of the Crystal Cove mattress:

  • Pressure relief: The memory foam in the Crystal Cove mattress is designed to conform to your body and relieve pressure points. This can help to reduce pain and discomfort, and improve your overall sleep quality.
  • Support: The pocketed coils in the Crystal Cove mattress provide contouring support and isolate motion. This means that the mattress will conform to your body and provide support where you need it most.

If California were a mattress, it would be the Crystal Cove mattress from Brentwood Home. It exudes a laid-back aesthetic that is welcoming and stylish. This mattress gets its looks from the Crystal Cove Yoga collection which includes the yoga bolster pillow, pranayama pillow, and meditation pillow. This is the first mattress in their line that is not tufted. People looking for a smooth sleeping surface will enjoy this feel.

Ordering The Crystal Cove Mattress

This mattress is only available through Brentwood Home’s website. Since all of their mattresses are made on demand, it will take about a week and a half to arrive at your door. It will come in a box like the one below. I don’t really rave about boxes and of course they don’t affect the quality of the mattress but the quality of the box is an indicator that they pay attention to the details which will matter in a mattress.

Brentwood Home Box

This is what it looks like out of the box. This mattress is super heavy and also heavily compressed so extra wrapping needs to be done to keep it from coming loose in the box. A queen size weighs 128 lbs.

This picture was taken soon after opening the mattress. It springs to life quickly because it literally has springs. This is a mattress that you can sleep on a few hours after opening because there really isn’t that much foam in it.

Overview of the Crystal Cove Mattress

In the video below I show you the inside of the mattress. I am sitting on the plush side which has the charcoal-infused foam at the top. The firm side has a layer of Dunlop latex at the top. I don’t think there would ever be a reason to access the inside or take off the cover though.

This mattress comes with a 120-night trial where you can try it out in the comfort of your home and if you don’t like it, just contact them and they will facilitate an easy return. You do not have to pack it up and ship it back. Brentwood also offers a 25-year warranty. This company has been around much longer than most online brands and they are a mattress manufacturer that makes their own mattresses so you can have peace of mind that this company should be around for another 25 years to honor their warranty.

My Crystal Cove Findings

The videos below illustrate bounce and motion transfer on each side of the mattress. Both sides will have bounce due to the coil system in the middle. Here’s the plush side first. The plus side has charcoal infused foam. The charcoal can help with cooling and with flushing toxins out of the body. Whether or not that will happen underneat the cover of the mattress is uncertain but charcoal also can keep the mattress fresh which is a bonus over traditional foam.

Here’s’ the firm side. It has slightly more bounce because it has a layer of latex at the top. What you will notice is that you sort of float more on the firm side. Latex is instantly responsive to no waiting for it to adapt to your body and it is also easier to move around on than foam.

The video below shows you how each component of the mattress works.

My Crystal Cove Recommendation

There are so many choices out there when it comes to buying a mattress. It’s just overwhelming. So, here are 5 reasons you should be considering a Crystal Cove mattress.

  1. You aren’t sure what firmness will work for you or your firmness preferences fluctuate.
  2. You are looking for a luxury guest bed where you can offer your guests choice of firmness.
  3. You prefer a smooth sleeping surface.
  4. You aren’t sure if foam or latex is right for you.
  5. You like a natural mattress but also appreciate the benefits of foam.

In terms of overall feel. I really enjoy the plush side with the foam. It has a unique feel that will appeal to side sleepers. Stomach and back sleepers will probably prefer the firm side with latex. The stretch knit cover is stretchy enough to give you the full benefits of the layers underneath and the hand stitched handles on each side make flipping the mattress much easier.

This mattress will cost more than other brands but in this case you get what you pay for and more. You get two quality mattresses in one and all the craftsmanship and high-end design that comes from Brentwood Home. In my opinion, they are becoming a boutique luxury online mattress brand that has yet to meet their match.

Crystal Cove vs. Layla Hybrid

The Crystal Cove mattress and the Layla Hybrid mattress are both popular hybrid mattresses that offer a variety of benefits. However, there are some key differences between the two mattresses that may make one a better choice for you than the other.

Here is a comparison of the two mattresses:

FeatureCrystal CoveLayla Hybrid
FirmnessMedium-firmMedium-firm to firm
ConstructionMemory foam, latex, and pocketed coilsMemory foam and pocketed coils
Price$$$$$
Trial and warranty120-night trial and 10-year warranty120-night trial and lifetime warranty

Here is why the Crystal Cove mattress may be a better choice for you than the Layla Hybrid mattress:

  • Flippable design: The Crystal Cove mattress is flippable, so you can change the firmness level of the mattress depending on your needs. The Layla Hybrid mattress is not flippable, so you are stuck with the same firmness level.
  • Sustainable materials: The Crystal Cove mattress is made with sustainable materials, such as recycled latex and organic cotton. The Layla Hybrid mattress is not made with sustainable materials.
  • Price: The Crystal Cove mattress is more expensive than the Layla Hybrid mattress. However, it is important to note that the Crystal Cove mattress is made with higher quality materials and has a more sustainable design.

Ultimately, the best way to decide which mattress is right for you is to try out both mattresses and see which one you prefer. Both mattresses offer a free trial period, so you can return the mattress if you are not satisfied with it.

Here is some additional information that may help you to make a decision:

  • If you are looking for a mattress that you can flip to change the firmness level, the Crystal Cove mattress is a better choice.
  • If you are looking for a mattress that is made with sustainable materials, the Crystal Cove mattress is a better choice.
  • If you are on a tight budget, the Layla Hybrid mattress is a better choice.
  • If you are looking for a mattress with a lifetime warranty, the Layla Hybrid mattress is a better choice.

FitMe Pillow: A Much Needed Modern Adjustment to the Traditional Buckwheat Pillow

Buckwheat pillows, as a stand alone product, most likely do not excite the typical consumer. They aren’t soft and fluffy like most items we associate with when we think of the word “pillow,” so what makes them appealing to a consumer? Why would people buy them in the first place and how is the FitMe Pillow different?

fitme pillow with bamboo case

There’s no doubt that a plethora of individuals have given up comfort in search of a healthier pillow, one that can yield substantial neck and head support. It can be difficult to find a pillow that can provide optimal spinal alignment, allowing one to minimize neck pain, muscle spasms and general cramping from incorrect sleeping positions. There’s a reason why the Japanese have been sleeping on buckwheat pillows for the past 600 years. For Americans however, the concept is still one we are trying to wrap our heads around.

Overview of the FitMe Pillow

fitme pillow unboxing

When it comes to the FitMe Pillow, the inventor strove to do something different and that is blend the comfort of foam pillows with the support that buckwheat pillows have been proven to provide. This idea may seem overly basic to some but in reality, it’s pretty innovative as it hasn’t really been executed before..

Construction of the FitMe Pillow

This FitMe Pillow contains two main materials: buckwheat hulls and foam. It’s that simple. The inventor calls this combination an interlocking filling. While the buckwheat provides support, the foam provides loft and is also able to lock in the buckwheat hulls so that they stay in place.

This is all then packed in a pleasant quilted bamboo pillow cover.

The ability to customize the pillow, with additional foam and buckwheat (which come included), also gives it more appeal.

A single Fitme Pillow retails for $49.95 on their official website, while a double-pack sells for an awesome discount of $75.

My FitMe Pillow Findings

Buckwheat pillows are interesting, not only for the sleep benefits they provide but for all the other purposes it’s used for.

  1. They’re natural and they’re even considered to be hypoallergenic

This makes buckwheat pillows a great option for people with allergies.

  1. They have a cooling effect

Because organic buckwheat is resistant to pressure, air is able to pass through the pillow, allowing you to sleep cool and not wake up in a sweat

  1. They provide support

Because buckwheat hulls do not compress, the pillow is designed to form around your head and neck like a mold.

  1. They’re adjustable

This means that if it isn’t perfect the first time around, you can easily try again and adjust the pillow to your liking.

Now that you know the benefits, you might be wondering, “Wait a minute, what exactly is buckwheat anyway?”

Buckwheat is a plant cultivated for its grain-like seeds and as a cover crop. Despite the name, buckwheat is not related to wheat, as it is not a grass. Instead, buckwheat is related to sorrel, knotweed, and rhubarb. Because its seeds are rich in complex carbohydrates, it is referred to as a pseudocereal. (Wikipedia)

It’s used in food as well as beverages such as beer, whiskey and tea, and of course, as the occasional upholstery filling. Because buckwheat is gluten-free, it has been used in the same way as barley to produce a malt that can form the basis for what will be a gluten-free beer.

(Due to the reasons above, only the exterior cover of the pillow can be machine washed. If the buckwheat hulls are soaked, they need to be replaced.)

My FitMe Pillow Recommendation

fitme pillow natural pillow

The story behind the creation of the pillow is pretty interesting. Many people are aware of how overly firm buckwheat pillows are and the FitMe Pillow creator not only echoed that but decided to offer a solution. He strove to make it a softer pillow but of course, not too soft (otherwise the support would be lost.)

If you’re not convinced of the health benefits of it, which are chronicled to excess all over the web, I think it’s an interesting buy nonetheless just for the sheer novelty of the product. In truth, there are genuine reasons why buckwheat pillows have developed a fan base and why they are seen to be effective but it may just take your own trial to become convinced.

The one thing I will point out regarding this pillow is that it’s typical for the buckwheat hulls to fall to the bottom of the pillow, while the foam rests near the top. That being the case, it’s probably a good idea to give it a bit of a shake and turn so that both materials can be nicely mixed.

And lastly: keep this away from your children, or at least keep them ignorant of the fact the pillow is customizable unless you want a mess. 🙂

Allswell Mattress Topper
Bottom line

Allswell mattress toppers offer an affordable way to enhance sleep comfort, particularly by addressing mattress firmness and temperature regulation. They are ideal for individuals looking to soften a firm mattress or hot sleepers, but those seeking solutions for underlying mattress issues should consider other options. The innovative graphite and copper gel infusions provide superior temperature control and durability.

Allswell made a splash with extremely affordable mattresses and bedding. They now offer innovative mattress toppers at a great price. The lineup includes a 3′ graphite infused topper and a 3″ and 4″ graphite and copper gel topper. A mattress topper is an affordable way to make a firm mattress softer. If your mattress sags, you probably need a new mattress but if the problem is firmness, these toppers are the way to go. They also come with a 30-night trial which gives you time to know for sure if they are solving the problems with your mattress.

Overview of the Allswell Mattress Toppers

These mattress toppers are available exclusively on their website. You can even opt for 2-day shipping to get it extra fast. It will arrive in a box and come wrapped in plastic. As you can see below it is super compact but comes to life quickly and is ready to sleep on in a few hours.

allswell wrapped mattress

The video below is an overview of the 3″ graphite infused topper. This is their most affordable option and is best for people looking to make their mattress softer while not compromising any support.

This video explains the benefits of the 4″ graphite and copper gel topper. It is ideal for side sleepers who want optimal pressure relief.

Allswell Mattress Topper Construction

A mattress topper is basically an extra layer of your mattress so whatever issues are underneath it will still exist. I only recommend a topper if your original mattress is just too firm. Mattress toppers have a tendency to trap more heat than your mattress but Allswell has incorporated graphite into their foam to mitigate this. Basically, graphite is highly conductive and draws heat away faster than a traditional topper.

The 4″ Cool Touch topper adds in a copper gel material. Copper is also conductive and has antimicrobial properties. The top layer of this mattress has phase change material which is cool to the touch. You will see a white stripe across the middle of the topper where the effect is strongest and where your body will likely need it the most. Keep in mind that the more layers you put over the topper, the less noticeable the effect.

In the picture below you can see the white stripe in the middle of the topper which is the coolest part.

Allswell Mattress Topper Cost

Below are the prices of the toppers as of this writing. As you can see it is certainly a more budget-friendly option over buying a new mattress.

Why You Should Invest in a Graphite Infused Mattress Topper

Mattress toppers have long been prized for their ability to enhance the comfort and longevity of a mattress. However, the advent of new materials like graphite infusion has revolutionized the mattress topper industry, offering a plethora of unique benefits. Here are some compelling reasons to invest in a graphite infused mattress topper:

1. Superior Temperature Regulation

One of the most notable advantages of graphite infused mattress toppers is their superior temperature regulation. Graphite is a natural heat conductor, which means it can effectively draw heat away from the body and disperse it, keeping you cooler as you sleep. This makes graphite infused mattress toppers a perfect solution for those who tend to sleep hot or live in warmer climates.

2. Enhanced Comfort

Beyond temperature regulation, graphite infused mattress toppers also enhance overall sleep comfort. These toppers offer a plush, supportive surface that can alleviate pressure points, leading to fewer aches and pains and a more restful night’s sleep.

3. Durability

Graphite infused mattress toppers are known for their durability. The infusion of graphite strengthens the topper’s structure, reducing the risk of sagging, indentations, or wear and tear over time. This can prolong the lifespan of both the topper and the mattress itself.

4. Hypoallergenic Properties

Graphite naturally possesses antimicrobial properties, making these toppers a good choice for allergy sufferers. A graphite infused topper can help reduce the presence of allergens in your bed, promoting a cleaner, healthier sleep environment.

5. Eco-Friendly Choice

Graphite is a naturally occurring element, and its use in mattress toppers offers an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic materials. For those who prioritize environmentally conscious products, a graphite infused topper can be a sound investment.

6. Improved Sleep Quality

By combining all the benefits – from temperature regulation to enhanced comfort and hypoallergenic properties – a graphite infused mattress topper can significantly improve the quality of your sleep. Better sleep quality, in turn, can contribute to improved overall health and well-being.

Investing in a graphite infused mattress topper can provide a host of benefits, making it a worthwhile consideration for anyone seeking to upgrade their sleep experience. As with any bedding purchase, it’s recommended to consider your personal sleep preferences, needs, and budget before making a decision.

Why Should You Get an Allswell Mattress Topper?

I have found that as I age, I become more particular about my mattress. As a kid, I could sleep on just about anything, anywhere. Now, if my mattress isn’t calibrated to a specific firmness, I just don’t get quality sleep. Mattress toppers are an economical way to address pressure point issues. They are also much more compact than a mattress and easier to return. Mattress topper technology has evolved along with mattress technology by offering you the latest cooling and comfort materials so adding a topper is going to be an upgrade.

Considering a typical online foam mattress is 10 inches thick and retails for around $800 in a queen size, a 3″ queen size topper for $109 is a lot more mattress for the money. You also need to consider that the base layer in foam mattresses is a support layer so again, if your support layer on your existing mattress is sound, you are getting a lot for your money.

My Allswell Mattress Topper Recommendation

If you wake up with a sore back, that may be a structural issue with your mattress and you should consider buying a new mattress with proper support. If your mattress is still in good shape, adding a topper is the way to go. For most people, a 3″ topper will do the trick but if you are a side sleeper and tend to sleep hot, definitely go with the 4″ cool touch option. Allswell is making a name for itself by becoming a value leader with mattresses and they do the same with this strong lineup of mattress toppers.
