The Coddle convertible couch is a great option for people that live in small spaces or are on the go. That’s because it’s super easy to set up and takedown. It also is very durable and can fit around tight corners. Most importantly, it can be converted into a bed within seconds. The versatility, form factor and added features such as USB ports on each side make this a stylish and functional couch and bed that is sure to please guests. I received a free white leather couch for review from Coddle. I chose white because that would most likely show any flaws and I wanted to be sure the quality was there.

Overview of the Coddle Couch

Here’s a video overview of the Coddle Couch. As you can see, it’s incredibly easy to set up and adjust. It basically comes already setup except for snapping the legs in at the bottom. This is a solid piece of furniture.

Your Coddle Couch will arrive in a normal brown box but inside there’s a fancy box that includes instructions on how to set up the couch. You can also see that the couch is packaged with care and I didn’t notice any dents or scratches.

The only thing you need to do is take off the packaging, add the legs and flip it over.

There’s a power cord in the back that powers the USB ports, just plug that in and you’re ready to go!

Construction of the Coddle Couch

This couch is constructed similar to a quality foam mattress. The difference is that this couch has either a leather or microfiber cover but beneath that, you get layers of foam that create comfort.

How Much Does the Coddle Couch Cost?

The Coddle retails for $999 but that’s before any discounts which they usually provide on their site.

My Coddle Findings

What most important with any couch or bed is how it feels. Obviously this is best used as a couch and it feels like a quality leather sofa. As you can see, the arms can be adjusted up or down, when both arms are up, the sofa functions more as a love seat. I’m 6’3 so I make the sofa look a little small.

Here it is with the arms down.

Here I am laying on the couch. The backs of the couch also go down to make a complete bed.

Here it is completely flat. I recommend using a mattress topper if you are going to have guests lying on it. Coddle makes one you can purchase with the couch.

I think it was smart that Coddle added USB and power ports to each side of the couch. While it’s great that I can power my phone, I often work on my couch and I need power for my laptop.

To be honest, I didn’t expect much in terms of quality for the price. At $999 it’s hard to get all the details right but Coddle delivered. Here’s a closer view o the stitching on the leather. I didn’t find any loose threads or missed stitches which makes me like the couch even more. It just looks fantastic and will instantly upgrade the look of any room.

My Coddle Couch Recommendation

The Coddle is the best couch and bed combo I have tried so far. I am extremely impressed with the quality and design. For $999 it is an incredible value. Best of all you get 60 nights to try it out in the comfort of your own home to see if it’s right for you. That’s still very rare for furniture to offer a free trial period like this. Although you can get white glove delivery for $149, I recommend going with the free delivery since this is so ridiculously easy to setup. If you are looking for a versatile couch that can be easily converted into a bed within minutes, this is the obvious choice. Its also just a great couch for entertaining or binging on Netflix since the arms can be adjusted as needed to accommodate you or multiple people.

Frequently Asked Questions About Best White Noise Machines for Sleep

Is a white noise machine worth it for improving sleep?

Yes, a white noise machine is worth it for improving sleep, especially if you are frequently disturbed by environmental noises. Our article highlights how many adults now embrace this sleep aid to combat disturbances.

History of Hastens Mattress

Once upon a time, nestled in the lush green meadows of Sweden, a tale of luxury, comfort, and dreams took root. In the year 1852, a skilled artisan named Pehr Adolf Janson embarked on an ambitious journey. He sought to craft the most opulent sleep experience known to mankind, harnessing the essence of nature and blending it with unparalleled craftsmanship. And thus, Hästens, the world-renowned mattress brand, was born.

The early days of Hästens were marked by an unwavering dedication to quality. Janson, a saddlemaker by trade, carefully selected the finest natural materials for his creations: horsehair, cotton, and wool. The secret to Hästens’ inimitable softness and support lay in the horsehair, which offered remarkable breathability, temperature regulation, and durability. This unique blend of natural fibers became the hallmark of Hästens mattresses, setting them apart from all others.

As the years went by, Hästens continued to evolve, embracing innovation and enhancing its expertise. In 1924, the brand adopted the distinctive blue and white checkered pattern, inspired by the Swedish flag. This timeless design became synonymous with Hästens’ commitment to quality and elegance, a subtle reminder of the brand’s proud heritage.

The year 1952 marked a significant milestone for Hästens, as the brand introduced its first-ever pocket spring mattress. This groundbreaking innovation, a fusion of old-world craftsmanship and modern technology, allowed the company to offer unparalleled comfort and support to its discerning customers. The pocket springs, meticulously layered within the mattress, allowed for a sleep surface that adapted to the sleeper’s every movement, cradling the body in a cocoon of luxurious rest.

Over the years, Hästens continued to refine its craftsmanship, creating mattresses that were nothing short of works of art. The brand’s master artisans, the modern-day descendants of Pehr Adolf Janson, devoted hundreds of hours to handcrafting each mattress, ensuring that every stitch, every tuft, and every layer was perfect. The result was a sleep experience that transcended the ordinary, transporting the sleeper to a realm of blissful slumber.

Today, Hästens is synonymous with the pinnacle of luxury and comfort, gracing the homes of royalty, celebrities, and discerning sleep connoisseurs the world over. The brand’s commitment to excellence remains unwavering, as does its dedication to sustainability and the preservation of nature. Hästens believes that the most exquisite sleep experience can only be achieved by respecting the earth and its resources.

And so, the tale of Hästens continues, as the brand journeys forth into the world of dreams. Its legacy lives on in the hearts of those who have experienced the sublime embrace of a Hästens mattress, a testament to the enduring power of craftsmanship, innovation, and a love for the finest things in life.

There’s been a recent spurt of health and wellness focused items in various industries. From organic food to natural skincare products to environment-friendly cookware, health and wellness have become an entire industry in itself, and consumers are also hooked. Everyone wants to be healthy, eating right and sleeping well. And these health and wellness products aim to make this easier for consumers. A case in point is the sleep industry. Even till a decade ago, no one could predict that this nightly phenomenon that all of us go through could become a whole market in itself. But today this is a reality, with hundreds of products claiming to improve sleep quality and keep away sleep disorders.

From luxury mattresses to sleep-related gadgets like light alarm clocks and sound machines, there is an endless list of products to splurge on. But have you ever considered splurging more than $100,000 on a bed?

No, we aren’t kidding. If you thought that your $3,000 bed was the most expensive it could get, you are making a huge mistake. There is a mattress – probably the only one in the world right now – that’s close to $150,000 and has the world in awe. It’s possibly the most luxurious bed that’s fit for a queen and is still touted as worth the money. Why? Let’s find out.

Hästens Vividus – What Is It?

As you probably have already guessed from the name, this is a Swedish luxury bed. But the question is, with thousands of luxury beds available today, what exactly sets it apart, aside from the price tag?

The Hästens Vividus bed isn’t something consumers would buy at the drop of a hat. It’s for those who not only have that kind of money to spend but also the lifestyle to fit it in. It’s a custom, continental bed that’s crafted to perfection by four master artisans at the Hästens workshop in Sweden’s Köping. You pay $149,000 for a pinewood frame and steel springs, with layers of horsetail hair, flax, wool, and cotton batting. If that reminds you of mattresses made in the early centuries, you are right. Hästens specializes in making beds that are entirely handcrafted with pure, natural materials, just like the mattresses of yore.

The Hästens Vividus could well be the bed that Queen Victoria slept on. And it has absolutely no competitors in the mattress industry. None at all. Of course, for that price, you get several other things, such as the finest diamond necklace from Tiffany or a Mercedes AMG GT S. If you choose to buy this bed instead, read on to learn more about its features.

Quality and Features

The Hästens bedding company has been around since 1852, and their motto has always been “The Spirit of Excellence.” We wonder if it can get any more excellent than this entirely handcrafted bed made of all-natural materials. In a market where latex and foam are the key materials, the mention of horsetail hair and flax certainly makes you take notice.

Hästens has a number of showrooms around the world, including the US, and every interested customer is encouraged to visit a store to check out the product before shelling out the massive sum.

But you may wonder the advantage of horse hair and flax in a mattress when the market is flooded with things like gel memory foam, air-engineering, and open cell technology. Hästens has been in the bedding industry much before latex or memory foam came into existence. In those times natural materials were used to make mattresses. Even though today these materials seem very outdated, back in those days they made some of the finest beds. This Swedish company sticks to the tradition and continues to make all-natural handmade beds. In fact, a story goes that’s the Swedish royal family was so impressed with the craftsmanship of Hästens that the company was named the Official Bedding Supplier to the Swedish Royal Court. This was over 65 years ago.

There is no doubt that the Swedes are incredible at the craftsmanship. From knives to cutlery to furniture to bedding, anything manufactured in Sweden becomes a collector’s piece. The same applies to the Hästens Vividus. Every bed is made to order and customized according to preferences. Although there are beds on display at their showrooms, Hästens takes care to specially craft a bed for you once you place an order. This makes every bed unique.

There are several benefits of an all-natural bed. Horse tail hair is a natural temperature regulator, absorbing moisture as the bed heats when you sleep and releasing it the moisture as the bed cools when you get out of it. Flax has antibacterial properties, making the mattress hygienic and safe. Flax is also used to make linen fibers. Cotton is excellent at wicking moisture and helping you stay cool, while wool keeps you warm in the colder months.

Sure, you don’t get the bounce of memory foam, but you do get a bed that’s 100 percent natural, free from chemicals, and has been made just for you by master craftsmen in faraway Sweden. Besides, Hästens has researched a good deal about the science of sleep and makes sure that their beds help customers get the best sleep ever.

So Why Hästens Vividus So Expensive?

This is where the fun begins. When you first see the Hästens Vividus bed up close, it can slightly anger you: why is something that looks so ordinary priced $149,000? It doesn’t look anything like those technology-driven mattresses that are the rage today. It doesn’t look like a cloud, and it doesn’t promise to feel as soft either. It doesn’t have any built-in gadget– no phone charger, no smartphone app, no television or refrigerator. Then why on Earth is it so expensive?

To understand this, we need to know the history of the Vividus. When the bed was first made in 2006, it used to take 160 hours to build and was priced at $112,900. In the next 10 years, the company researched more about regulating body temperature and offering more comfort and support without using any artificial material. They did manage to make the Vividus better, but it only started to take double the time– 320 hours. That’s because Hästens has only four certified craftsmen and only one atelier in Sweden. Each bed is made to order and requires at least 10 weeks to build.

Next, come the materials. The frame is made from Swedish pine wood that’s slow-growing and not abundant. Needless to say, Swedish pine wood is expensive and not easily available. Next in line is the box spring, which has steel springs as well as several layers of flax used to soundproof the bed. On top of that sits the mattress, made with more springs, and multiple layers of horsetail hair lining and cotton and wool batting, layered just the way you would bake a cake or lasagna. The topmost layer is the mattress pad, called the “topper,” made with many more layers of wool, cotton, and horsehair.

Horsehair is one of the most critical components of the bed and also requires the most effort and time. The hair is hand braided and then unwound, to make it bouncy. Once the strands of horsehair are curled, they function like springs, giving the bed bounce and support. Unlike human hair, horsehair is hollow and excellent at wicking away moisture to prevent sweat buildup.

Because all these materials are natural and cannot be manufactured in a factory, they are hard to obtain and also expensive. There are no screws and nails in the bed, only dovetail joints. The step-stitching is done by hand with an 18-inch-long needle.

However, the advantage is that when you lie on the bed, you not only feel supported overall but also have your legs slightly elevated, which is beneficial for blood circulation.

Besides the customized comfort, you also get a 25-year warranty, and a bed that’s fit to be passed down to next generations.

Is Hästens Vividus Worth It?

It was recently reported that Drake now sleeps on a Hastens mattress. His is custom made, costs $395,000, took over 600 hours to make and weighs roughly one ton.

Drake BedIf you have the money and want to splurge not on diamonds or gold watches but on sleep, then the Hästens Vividus is for you. You don’t easily find such beds. Free from chemicals and artificial materials, the Vividus is crafted for the most blissful and most hygienic sleep.

You don’t necessarily have to lie on a $150,000 mattress for the most restful sleep. If you have a sleep disorder, then a mattress isn’t going to cure it. However, if you do want to invest in the most luxurious sleep, it doesn’t get any better than the Hästens Vividus.

If you want the poor person’s Hasten’s mattress, check out the Brentwood Home Oceano. It’s less than 1% of the price and you aren’t compromising much except bragging rights.

The other day the FedEx guy knocked on my door and held out a large box addressed to me, from Layla. He warned me it was heavy, but for some reason I didn’t believe him—boy was I wrong. After dragging the large box into my house, I examined it for clues, eventually discovering I had just received in a 20lb weighted blanket from Layla. I was so excited to try it out, I could barely wait until that evening to get started.

I’ve heard so many great things about weighted blankets, and to someone who used to sleep with a comforter all year round (except in Portland, Oregon, where some heathens decided AC was unnecessary) it seemed like a Comforter 2.0. I cut open the excessive tape to find a nice Layla zipper bag with handles—great for carrying around 20 pound blankets.

I extracted the contents (and almost pulled a back muscle): an airtight plastic bag with the blanket vacuum sealed inside. I cut open the seal and air came rushing into the package; I was ready.

The weighted blanket has two sides: quilted cotton on the bottom and quilted polyester fuzz on the top. The top layer is super soft, like a high quality blanket I once had years ago, but the bottom layer feels more like a pair of pants—coziness was not its #1 purpose.

The blanket is weighted with a new material comprised of 95% glass beads and 5% polyester fiber, which made it weigh a metric ton.

The sheet fell short at 60” x 80”—just smaller than my queen-size bed—but I guess it doesn’t really need to spread across the whole bed. The size discrepancy may look kind of unsightly laid out on top of the bed, but functionally a smaller blanket is easier for someone to wrap themselves up in. I originally thought it was supposed to serve as a bed layer (like a regular blanket), but now I see that it’s more of a personal accessory. The tag told me to wash it in cold water with a low heat dryer cycle, but I was worried so I put both machines on gentle. When the blanket came out I was ready to give it its first official test drive.

Before hitting the hay, I contemplated using my duvet in conjunction with the weighted blanket, worried that the Layla blanket wouldn’t be warm enough in my 57F room. Turns out the blanket was perfect without the duvet, in fact it overrode the Eli & Elm Whitney (cooling) sheets a bit, but just enough to where I was warm and not hot. I stretched the warm, fuzzy, heavy blanket across my bed (and 5 pillows) and hopped under the covers. At first, I couldn’t sleep. It felt like the lead apron they make you wear when you get x-rays—it pinned me to my mattress and I felt trapped (this blanket is completely lead-free). But an hour or so later, I finally opened my mind and relaxed, drifting off to sleep. After a couple days of getting used to it, the feeling of being trapped turned into a feeling of security, and the weighted blanket soon fulfilled a need I didn’t even know I had.

Sleeping with the Layla weighted blanket is bit like sleeping next to someone, but without the overheating. With a weighted blanket you don’t have to take turns as the little spoon (the best spoon), because the blanket is just one giant spoon and you are one warm burrito. Layla explains on their website that this feeling of security is called “Deep Touch Pressure” (DTP), which like a hug, causes your brain to release serotonin. Weighted blankets are great for people with ADHD, anxiety, and depression, which gives me blanket bingo, so you know I mean it when I say it works. Goodness knows I could use a little extra serotonin.

The only negative thing I can think of when it comes to this blanket is that I can’t bring it everywhere. After trying out the blanket for a couple weeks, I visited my cousin in New York and it a bit challenging to stay asleep without the security of 20 pounds of glass beads weighing down on me. I did however wake up one morning with her roommate’s miniature pitbull mix laying on top of me, but it’s just not the same.

The weighted blanket may cost $129 – $179 (depending on size), but this is one of those sleep accessories that is worth every dang penny. It’s durable and well made, which promises years of comfy, calm sleep. I raved about Layla’s bamboo sheets and I’m going to rave about this weighted blanket—it’s all fantastic. Use them together or use them separate, Layla is a doing a fantastic job adding onto their signature mattress products.

Setting up the Leesa Adjustable Base

If you don’t opt in for the white glove delivery, setup is easy. The base itself is heavy, near 150 lbs. so if you have help to move it into your bedroom the rest is simple.

The adjustable bed comes in a box like the one below.

Upon opening the box you will find the base wrapped in plastic to keep it clean.

Once you get it out of the packaging you just flip the base upside down and screw in the legs. The legs can be adjusted for different heights by pushing in the peg then sliding up or down.

My Adjustable Base Findings

Overall this is a great looking adjustable bed. It also has a relatively quiet motor so if you need to make adjustments at night you have less chance of waking your partner. The remote is fairly simple and is great for people who want a simple interface and all the standard features.

Leesa Adjustable Base remote

Here’s a picture of the base by itself. The two white strips towards the foot of the bed are actually little grips called micro-hooks, sort of like velcro that help prevent the mattress from sliding around. You also have the bar at the end of the bed but the grips help prevent the mattress from moving from side to side.

leesa adjustable bed

Here’s a picture of the Leesa mattress on the base. But like I said, this will work with most mattresses that come in a box.

Leesa on adjustable bed

If you buy a king size adjustable base, you are actually getting 2 twin xl bases that you put side by side. The advantage is that it is much easier to move into your house and you can operate each side independently. If you go this route you will also want to buy two twin xl mattresses.

twin xls

Some people don’t like the idea of having two separate mattresses so you can just buy standard king mattress. If you do this you can sync both of the twin xl bases so they work together off one single remote.

Overall this is a great adjustable bed. If you are looking for a solid and reliable adjustable base this is it. It doesn’t have a massage feature or the ability to save your favorite position but if you want that you will pay quite a bit more. I do appreciate that you can raise or lower the height of the bed by adjusting the feet. You can go low profile or make it higher if you are a tall person like me. In the video, I have it at the tallest setting which makes it about 13 inches off the ground, add in the 10-inch Leesa mattress and you are sitting about 23 inches from the ground.

I especially like that this comes with a 1o0 night trial. If you were to buy an adjustable base from Amazon you would only get the standard 3o day return policy and have to ship the base back to Amazon which will mean considerable shipping costs. With the Leesa base, returns are completely free.

Even if you don’t opt for a Leesa mattress, their adjustable bed should be top of mind when looking to outfit your bedroom.

Lucid Hybrid Mattress Review

Lucid 12 inch hybrid
Bottom line

The Lucid Hybrid mattress is a budget-friendly hybrid offering significant value for its price. It is best for stomach and back sleepers due to its medium-firm feel, though side sleepers might find it less conforming. The strongest reasons to buy are its affordability and thoughtful odor-absorbing construction.

I was given a free 12 inch Lucid Hybrid hybrid mattress for review. This is a spring and foam mattress with charcoal and aloe vera infused foam to reduce the initial memory foam smell you get when opening the mattress. The charcoal is used in the top layer of foam to help absorb odors over the life of the mattress. What makes this mattress particularly unique is that it sells for an astonishingly low price of $399 for a queen size on Amazon.

Overview of the Lucid Hybrid

Below is a video overview of the mattress highlighting some of its main features. This mattress is Amazon Prime eligible so ships quickly and is ready to sleep on a few hours after opening.

As you can see from the box it is rolled and not folded. That means there are no creases when you opening it allowing you to sleep on it in just a few hours.  This also makes it easier to unpack and open since you open the box from the sides instead of the top.

Here’s a picture of the mattress roll packed and out of the box. It comes with a letter opener and this is one of the times where it was super easy to open using a letter opener.

Lucid mattress out of the box

How Much Does the Lucid Hybrid Cost?

Cost depends on how deep of a mattress you want. The difference between the 10 inch and 12 inch Lucid is that the 10 inch has 5.5-inch springs and 2.5 inches of the charcoal and aloe vera foam while the 12 inch has 6.5-inch springs and 3.5 inches of the charcoal and aloe vera foam.

Below are the current prices on Amazon for the 12-inch Lucid Hybrid:

  • Aloe Vera infused transition foam layer

Even though Lucid rates this mattress on the plusher end of the spectrum. I would rate it more of a medium firm. Here’s a picture illustrating how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress.  When you lay down you don’t sink in all that much into the foam.

Lucid mattress sink

Here’s a video illustrating motion transfer on the Lucid. There is some good bounce and a little motion transfer too due to the coils and the fact that the foam recovers faster than a denser foam will.

Here’s a video that shows how each later reacts.

Here’s a peek at the spring system which is surrounded by foam. It takes a little digging but it’s in there.Lucid Hybrid Springs

My Lucid Hybrid Recommendation

I recommend this mattress for stomach and back sleepers and the occasional side sleeper. This mattress will sleep relatively cool for a mattress with foam on the top layer because the foam is a bit more breathable and there is a spring system underneath. However, I found that the foam doesn’t conform quite as much as a denser foam mattress would which is why side sleepers may not like it as much.

For the money, this is an incredible value. One drawback is that they don’t have a standard 100-night trial but you are protected with Amazon’s return period however you would need to ship the mattress back which would be a bit expensive.

Frequently Asked Questions About TV in Bedroom: The Risky Choice for Sleep Quality

What are the main downsides of having a TV in the bedroom?

The primary downsides of a bedroom TV include diluting the room's purpose for sleep and causing cognitive confusion that makes it harder for your brain to associate the bedroom with rest. This can also lead to reduced melatonin production due to light exposure, which interferes with your ability to fall asleep.

Is watching TV in bed affecting my sleep quality?

Yes, watching TV in bed can significantly disrupt your sleep quality by exposing you to bright light that suppresses melatonin production, the hormone crucial for sleep regulation. The presence of a TV transforms the bedroom from a sanctuary for sleep into an entertainment space, making it harder for your brain to wind down.

How does light from screens impact sleep?

Light exposure from screens, including TVs and smartphones, within two hours of bedtime can significantly reduce the brain's melatonin levels, making it more difficult to fall asleep. Melatonin is the hormone responsible for signaling to your body that it's time to sleep, and its suppression creates resistance to sleep.

What is the ideal environment for optimal sleep?

The ideal environment for optimal sleep is a tranquil and quiet sanctuary, free from distractions like televisions and other electronic devices. Research consistently shows that environmental factors, particularly in the bedroom, are crucial for preventing sleep disorders and deprivation.

Why is it important for the bedroom to be solely for sleep?

It is important for the bedroom to be solely for sleep to prevent cognitive confusion, ensuring your brain consistently associates the space with rest rather than entertainment. When a TV is present, your brain struggles to make this distinction, hindering your ability to drift off when needed.

Are there historical habits that show a shift in TV viewing harmful to sleep?

Yes, traditional TV viewing habits, where families gathered at specific times, have been replaced by individual, fragmented viewing experiences across multiple devices and rooms, including bedrooms. This shift means people are engaging with screens more frequently and in sleep environments, contributing to poorer sleep quality.

The Purple 3 Hybrid Premier mattress offers a unique bouncy yet supportive feel due to its 3-inch Smart Comfort Grid and pocketed coils. It is best suited for back and occasional side sleepers, but dedicated side sleepers should opt for the Purple 4. This model stands out for its enhanced edge support and pressure relief properties.

I recently purchased a Purple 3 mattress for review. This mattress is made with a base pocket coil system and 3 inches of their Smart Comfort Grid making it softer and more plush feeling than the original Purple.

Overview of the Purple 3 Mattress

Here’s a brief overview of the Purple 3 mattress. Overall I found it to be considerably firmer than the Purple 4. I recommend this version to back and occasional side sleepers. Stomach sleepers will be better suited to the original purple or even Purple 2. Side sleepers need to go with the Purple 4.

How Much Does the Purple 3 Cost?

Here are the current prices. You should note that you get free white glove delivery. This is a very heavy mattress and does not come compressed. It comes in a full size box which will take two people to move.

Twin XL $1,899
Queen $2,199
King $2,699
Cal King $2,699

How is the Purple 3 Mattress Made?

Here are the construction details according to the Purple website.

My Purple 3 Mattress Findings

This mattress is really bouncy but it doesn’t transfer that much motion. This is in large part to the grid system on the top layer that has high point elasticity. This means it will collapse where it gets the most pressure and stay in tact where it doesn’t. Additionally, it is supported by a pocket coil system. All these coils are individually wrapped and work independently.

Here’s a video to illustrate the point.

For comparison sake, here’s another video with the Purple 4

To further help you decide which is right for you. Below is a picture of how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks on the Purple 3.

Here it is again on the Purple 4. Notice that the Purple 4 hugs the ball a bit more than the 3.

Here’s a look inside the Purple mattress. As you can see it features their signature Smart Comfort Grid and along the perimeter, there is foam to give you better edge support. The Original Purple does not have this type of edge support system.

The Smar Grid makes for a temperature neutral sleep environment and is good for pressure relief.

My Purple 3 Recommendation

As I have said in my previous Purple mattress reviews, there’s just no other mattress that feels like a Purple. The grid on the top layer is good a relieving pressure and there is no better mattress on the market right now that will sleep cooler. The Purple 3 is plusher than the Purple 2 and the Original Purple which makes it more suited to side sleepers but I still think the Purple 4 is the best of their lineup for side sleepers.

You get a 100 night trial period with this mattress. You should keep in mind that this is valid for the first mattress purchase only. If you buy and don’t like this mattress and return it within 100 days, you will get a full refund. However, if you then buy another Purple mattress you aren’t eligible for another 100 day trial. Just keep that in mind and make sure you are educated enough to make the right decision the first time.

Layla Pillow Price

The Layla pillow is a premium pillow that is priced at $129 for a queen size. However, the Layla pillow is often on sale, so you can usually find it for a lower price.

Layla Pillow Trial and Benefits

The Layla pillow comes with a 120-night trial period. This means that you can try the pillow for 120 nights and return it if you’re not satisfied with it.

The Layla pillow has a number of benefits, including:

  • It is adjustable, so you can choose the perfect loft for your needs.
  • It is made with a combination of memory foam and shredded memory foam, which gives it a unique feel that is both supportive and comfortable.
  • It is breathable, so it will keep you cool and comfortable all night long.
  • It is hypoallergenic, so it is ideal for people who suffer from allergies or asthma.
  • It is machine-washable, so it is easy to keep clean.

Layla Pillow Construction

The Layla pillow is made with a combination of memory foam and shredded memory foam. The memory foam provides support, while the shredded memory foam provides comfort and breathability. The pillow is also covered in a soft and breathable fabric.

The Layla pillow is not only the perfect pillow for your Layla mattress, it’s a memory foam pillow that pairs well with most mattresses. It’s priced at $99 and similar to the Layla mattress, it also is infused with copper giving it antimicrobial properties.  You can tell a lot of thought went into the design of this pillow which gives it an almost universal feel.

Ordering Your Layla Pillow

Currently, you can only purchase the Layla Pillow exclusively through the Layla website. It will arrive about a week after ordering. Unlike many pillows, this one actually comes with a free trial period. You can try it for 120 nights and if you don’t like it, return it for a full refund. That includes shipping to you and free return shipping something not often found with other pillow purchases.

Here’s a video overview of the Layla pillow with me on the Layla mattress. As you can see the cover of both the pillow and mattress are the same.

Construction of the Layla Pillow

The pillow is a standard/queen size the measurements are as follows:

24″ wide x 18″ tall x 4″ deep

The Layla pillow is made with a kapok/memory foam fill. Kapok is a fiber that comes from the seeds of a Kapok tree. It has a silky feel that makes for a great filler since it is a natural, renewable material. Combining this with shredded memory foam makes the pillow feel softer and lighter.

What are the other benefits of Kapok?

Kapok is hypoallergenic.
Sustainable
Lighter than cotton
Resists clumping
Down like feel

The cover of the Layla pillow is made with a copper infused cover. This makes the pillow sleep cooler due to copper’s high conductivity. Copper is also antimicrobial so your pillow will stay fresh, longer.

My Layla Pillow Findings

The Layla pillow has a medium loft. That means that it is thick enough to accommodate all sleepers. This is the first pillow with foam and kapok that I have tried. There are many latex/kapok pillow on the market which have a more bouncy feel. I think the foam used in this pillow pairs well with the kapok because you get the familiar down like feel and all the conforming and pressure relieving benefits of memory foam.

Best of all this pillow comes with a trial period so there’s nothing to lose with giving it a try. Pillows you buy on Amazon or other sites often require you to pay return shipping. With Layla they cover the return shipping you’re not out any money.

This pillow does NOT feel like the solid foam pillows of yesteryear. Think of the Layla pillow as a next generation foam pillow that leverages one of the best natural fibers, Kapok with shredded foam to make the pillow breathable, squish and comfy. The added benefit of a copper infused cover means you can get many years out of this pillow.

If you are looking for a cooling mattress protector that can help you sleep cooler and more comfortably, the Malouf Ice Tech Cooling Mattress Protector is the best option available.

The Nest Bedding cooling mattress protector is an affordable and effective way to make your bed a little cooler. This mattress protector incorporates phase change technology that makes it cool to the touch and draws heat away from your body while you sleep. This is a great choice for people that sleep hot. A queen size currently retails for $129.00 while the comparable  Malouf Ice Tech is currently selling at $279.

Overview of the Nest Cooling Mattress Protector

My Mattress Protector Findings

This mattress protector will sleep cooler than a conventional mattress protector and given the price it’s not that much more to pay. Below is a video shot with my infrared camera to show how quickly heat dissipates. I found this to be just as effective as the Malouf brand.

This is also waterproof and machine washable so you get all the benefits of a regular protector. When comparing the Nest protector to the Malouf protector, I found that the Malouf protector was a bit thicker and also more slippery. By that I mean your sheets slide around on top of the protector. This will lead to fitted sheets coming loose faster. Since it is thicker it will take away from the original feel of your mattress.

My Recommendation

I highly recommend mattress protectors in general because they not only keep your mattress clean and looking new, they also prevent dust mites from entering and reduce allergy issues. A major complaint with traditional mattress protectors is that they sleep hot. Really old or cheap mattress protectors will have a layer of vinyl which don’t breathe at all and trap heat. This mattress pad has a breathable membrane as well as cooling phase change technology that can keep you cooler than your original mattress.

There are now many mattresses on the market that have a cooling phase change cover built into the mattress, however, if you cover with a mattress pad that doesn’t have this technology or is not breathable, it totally negates the effectiveness. It’s better to get the mattress that has the most comfort for your needs then add something like this cooling protector if you find it is sleeping to hot.

It is also an excellent choice for those looking for a long-lasting and durable protector, given its 10-year warranty.

How does the Malouf Ice Tech Cooling Mattress Protector compare to the discontinued Nest Bedding option?

The Malouf Ice Tech Cooling Mattress Protector has emerged as a superior alternative to the Nest Bedding option, offering even better cooling capabilities. While both used phase-change technology and provided waterproofing and dust mite resistance, the Malouf protector has been noted for its more consistent coolness. Our team at the San Diego showroom found the Malouf offers enhanced performance for hot sleepers.

If you’re a hot sleeper or maybe going through menopause, there are some new prodcuts coming out to give you genuine releif. One of those products is the Cool Buddy. I recently received a free Cool Buddy mattress pad which is designed to cool and warm your bed. It is done by running water through a thin grid that you place underneath your sheets. Water is circulated so that it stays cool or warm depending on your preference. A Cool Buddy is currently selling for $259. This is considerably less expensive than the ChiliPad, their competior which is currently selling on Amazon for $599.

Overview of the Cool Buddy

The Cool Buddy is a relatively small unit that you place by your bedside to cool or warm your bed. If you order from Amazon it qualifies for Prime delivery so should arrive in a few days. It comes in a box like the one below.

Cool Buddy Box

Here’s a description of the product according to their Amazon listing:

This listing is for one Cool Buddy CB-CW-1 box set including a cooling unit, a large 55″ x 63″ mattress pad, and a remote control. This pad size is recommended for cooling two people on a King or Queen bed. How can the Cool Buddy help you sleep better and save money? First and foremost, let me be upfront and honest….if you are a hot sleeper, the best sleep of your life will probably come from a very expensive mattress and your air conditioner cranked down to about 55 degrees. If money and environmental concerns are no problem for you, that is the way to go!! If, however, you would like to sleep cool without paying $500+ a month for electricity, the Cool Buddy may be just the product for you. The idea is extremely simple…rather than cooling your entire house to frigid temperatures 8+ hours a night, the cool buddy only cools you. This cuts electricity consumption from thousands of watts an hour down to about 8, meaning you can run it all night for well under a penny of electricity and even reduce the wear and tear on your homes HVAC system. Here is how it works. Using the physics of evaporation, the Cool Buddy CB-C-1 control unit actively chills about a gallon of water 7-12 degrees below room temperature. For example, In Houston, I typically have my homes thermostat set at 76, and I typically see the cooling loop water at about 68 about 20 minutes after turning on the unit. This chilled water is then circulated through a thin mattress pad that pulls excess body heat away from you, transferring it to the water which is then run back through the chiller before being recirculated all night long. The physics are simple, the engineering is simple, and the product is simple, which is how we can sell it to you at such an incredible price.

As noted in the description the pad does not cover the entire mattress. Instead you place it towards to top of the bed so that it cools your chest and torso. Below is a picture of the Cool Buddy on my king size mattress.

Cool Buddy Mattress Pad

How to Use the Cool Buddy

I didn’t find any instructions for the Cool Buddy but I really didn’t need them. Here’s everything you get out of the box. Not really many pieces to this.

cool buddy pieces

To get started you need to connect the hoses to the pad and then to the unit that circulates the water. Below is a picture of the front of the unit.

Front of Cool Buddy

Here’s the back of the cool buddy where you connect the hose. Note that there is a plug for the hot water inlet. You can pull this out and put it in the cold water inlet if you want to switch to the warm setting.

Cool Buddy Back

To connect the hose you just slide them on. They are tight enough that they shouldn’t come lose.

Cool Buddy Hose

This is what the control panel looks like. You also get a remote to control it but I don’t think it requires much tweaking after you turn it on. It’s also important to note that the unit should sit higher than the pad for it to work at its best.

Cool Buddy Control Panel

My Cool Buddy Findings and Recommendations

There’s no doubt the Cool Buddy works. Below is a video shot with my infrared camera that shows the cooling water running through the grid of the Cool Buddy.

Here’s the actual video where I put my hand over the grid while the water is running:

In conclusion. Ths is a great solution for women experiencing hot flashes from menopause or anyone in general who just sleeps hot. The pad itself will firm up your mattress so there are some tradeoffs there but if you find yourself waking up constantly because of heat, this may be worth it. To minimize the feel of the pad underneath, you can add a mattress pad over it but just make sure not to add too many layers as it will negate the cooling effects. Over time you should get used to the feel.

The motor on the cooling unit will make some noise but it is a white noise that should help cancel out other noises at night. There is also a timer on the system so if you forget to turn it off it will automatically shut off after a certain amount of hours so you don’t wrek the motor.

This whole system is priced under $300 which is the best priced water cooling mattress pad I have found. If you buy off Amazon you can take advantage of the 30 day trial they have for products and it is Prime eligible.

How does the Cool Buddy compare to other cooling mattress pads like ChiliPad?

Deciding between getting a new mattress and just a mattress topper depends on various factors, including the current condition of your mattress, your personal comfort preferences, and budget constraints. Here’s a guide to help you make an informed decision:

  1. Age of Your Mattress: A typical mattress lasts 7-10 years. If yours is within or past this age range, it might be time for a new one.

  2. Mattress Condition:

    • Sagging: If your mattress has noticeable dips or sags, especially in the areas where you sleep most, a topper won’t fix the underlying issue. A new mattress might be in order.
    • Springs: Can you feel the springs poking through? If so, a mattress topper might provide temporary relief, but it’s a sign that your mattress is reaching the end of its life.
    • Lumps: Uneven surfaces or lumpy areas can make for an uncomfortable sleep. A topper might help in some cases, but often a new mattress is the better solution.
  3. Comfort & Firmness: If your mattress is still in good shape but just a little too firm or soft for your liking, a mattress topper can adjust the firmness without the need for a completely new mattress.

  4. Allergies & Hygiene: Over time, mattresses can accumulate allergens like dust mites. If you’ve kept it for many years and suffer from allergies, consider a new mattress. However, using a mattress protector can help keep your new mattress cleaner for longer.

  5. Sleep Quality: If you’re experiencing poorer sleep quality, waking up with aches and pains, or finding it difficult to get comfortable, it’s essential to discern if it’s the mattress or other factors like stress or health issues. If it’s the mattress, determine if its condition or firmness is the issue to decide between a topper or a new mattress.

  6. Budget: Mattress toppers are generally more affordable than buying a new mattress. If you’re on a tight budget but need a temporary solution to enhance comfort, a topper might be the way to go. However, investing in a good mattress can provide longer-lasting comfort and support.

  7. Mattress Warranty: Check if your mattress is still under warranty. Some warranties might be voided if you use certain types of toppers. Also, if it’s failing due to manufacturing defects and is still under warranty, you might get a replacement.

  8. Temporary vs. Long-Term Solutions: Mattress toppers can be a great temporary solution to enhance comfort, but they typically don’t last as long as mattresses. If you’re looking for a long-term solution, investing in a new mattress might be wiser.

  9. Type of Topper: If you’re leaning towards a topper, consider the material and thickness. Memory foam, latex, feather, and wool are popular choices, each with its own benefits.

In conclusion, assess the current state of your mattress and weigh the pros and cons of each option concerning your needs and budget. If your mattress is old, sagging, or causing discomfort, it’s probably time for a new one. If you’re looking for a change in firmness or a temporary comfort boost, a mattress topper might be the answer.

I bought a Zinus Swirl Gel Memory foam topper, 2 inch to see how it would affect my mattress. I put this topper on the new Zinus Cooling Gel Mattress,  12 inch. This mattress is a medium firm feel as listed on their website but I found it to be a little too firm so adding one of their toppers might be a good solution.

You can buy the Zinus Swirl Gel memory foam topper direct from Amazon. It is currently selling for $54.99.

Here are some of the highlights of the topper:

  • 2 inches of cool gel memory foam for ideal sleeping comfort
  • Air flow pattern for cool support
  • Green tea extract and castor natural plant oil naturally eliminate odor-causing bacteria
  • Only the highest Quality memory foam – memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified for durability, performance, and Content
  • Worry Free 5 year limited Warranty

You can also buy this Zinus topper in the following sizes.

1.5″ $39.99
2″ $54.99
3″ $69.99
4″ $109.99

Notice that if you go up to a 4″ the construction changes. Here are the construction details of the 4″ mattress.

  • 1 inch of cool gel memory foam for ideal sleeping comfort
  • 3 inches of air flow high density support foam provides cool support
  • Green tea extract and castor natural plant oil naturally eliminate odor-causing bacteria
  • Only the highest Quality memory foam – memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified for durability, performance, and Content
  • Worry Free 5 year limited Warranty

The construction needs to be different or at least should be different on a thicker topper because if you don’t have a dense foam support base, you will lose alignment and sink into the topper too much.

My Zinus Mattress Topper Findings

As always, Amazon will deliver your mattress topper lightning fast since it is Amazon prime eligible. I received mine in 2 days and it arrived in a compact box. Note that the topper was not shrink wrapped but it was wrapped. That may be different with the 4 inch topper though.

Here’s what the topper looks like on my bed.

Here’s another shot but closer up so that you can see more of the peak and valley construction.

Below is a video that shows how the topper reacts. It recovers fairly quickly.

My Zinus Mattress Topper Recommendation

Mattress toppers are good if your mattress is structurally sound underneath. A mattress topper cannot solve issues with a sagging mattress or a mattress that just doesn’t give you proper support. What it can do though is soften it up a bit to make it more comfortable and to extend the life of your existing mattress.

I particularly like this 2 inch topper because it softened my mattress just a bit more. If you go too thick such as a 4 inch topper you can either make it too soft or lose some of the support that your mattresses was designed for. I think the sweet spot for mattress topper thickness is between 2-3 inches. Going less than 2 inches really doesn’t do much unless you are a really light person.

The box for this 2 inch topper from Zinus was small enough where if I wanted to return it, it would be fairly easy to do and since the topper didn’t come shrink-wrapped it would be easy enough to get back in the box, unlike compressed mattress or topper.

In conclusion, if you have a mattress that still gives you proper support but you are just looking to make it a bit softer, definitely check out the Zinus Swirl Gel Foam topper. The peak and valley construction allows for more breathability and feels great!
