Stunning Anti-Snoring Devices: Must-Have Solutions Today

Snoring mouthpieces

Top 5 Snoring Devices of 2019

Snoring is a common issue that impacts individuals of all ages, but it often becomes habitual after the age of thirty, particularly among those who are overweight. In fact, approximately one-third of American adults fall into this category, suggesting that snoring is more than just a minor annoyance; it can disrupt the sleep quality not only for the snorer but also for their partners. Understanding the mechanisms behind snoring, as well as the devices available to address it, can significantly enhance one’s quality of life.

What Causes Snoring?

As adults navigate through their nightly sleep cycles, they may find themselves dealing with the gruff sounds of snoring. This phenomenon consists of loud nasal noises interspersed with periods of silence, which are caused by temporary breathing pauses. Various factors contribute to the likelihood of snoring, including:

– Seasonal viral infections (e.g., cold and flu)
– Throat and chest infections
– Blocked nasal passages
– Aging
– Alcohol consumption
– Obesity
– Jaw and mouth structure
– Nasal passage partition irregularities
– Sinus positioning
– Sleep deprivation
– Sleeping position (especially back sleeping)

As individuals transition from light to deep sleep, the body relaxes, affecting the soft palate, tongue, and throat. This relaxation can narrow the air passage, leading to partial obstruction, resulting in snoring sounds as air forces its way out. Overweight individuals often experience louder snoring due to thicker tissue in the mouth and throat.

While there is currently no definitive cure for snoring, various devices can help mitigate its effects. Among the most recommended are anti-snoring mouthpieces and mouth guards.

Understanding Mouthpieces and Mouthguards

Mouthguards are designed to be easily fitted and inserted into the mouth. These devices help reduce snoring without requiring surgical procedures. They have garnered popularity for several reasons:

Simplicity: These DIY devices are user-friendly and easy to fit.
Maintenance: They require minimal upkeep, benefiting from straightforward cleaning methods.
Safety: Manufactured from certified materials, they pose no significant health risks.
Comfortable Use: Prolonged usage does not result in harm or discomfort.

Types of Mouthguards

There are two primary categories of mouthguards recommended by sleep care experts:

1. Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs)

MADs are named for their action in advancing the lower jaw (mandible) slightly forward, which helps keep the airway open during sleep. They work through two main actions:

– They create slight tension on the jaw, preventing it from fully relaxing.
– They provide additional space for the tongue, reducing the risk of airway obstruction.

MADs can be categorized as:

Monobloc Mouthpieces: Simplistic in design and cost-effective.
Bibloc MADs: More complex with adjustable parts, typically more expensive but may cause slight initial discomfort.

Custom designs are available to fit individual jaw sizes and mouth shapes.

2. Tongue Retaining Devices (TRDs)

TRDs, on the other hand, focus solely on preventing the tongue from obstructing the airway without moving the lower jaw. While they’re easier to use and generally less expensive than MADs, their universal size may not provide the perfect fit for everyone.

The Top 5 Snoring Devices of 2019

Navigating the myriad of snoring devices on the market can be overwhelming. Here are the top 5 mouth guard brands you should consider:

1. ZQuiet

ZQuiet has gained significant popularity due to its innovative hinge design, allowing for effortless jaw movements. Notably, it offers universal sizing, smooth airflow, and a 30-day trial, making it a dependable and cost-effective option.

2. SnoreRX

This device features an adjustable distance between its upper and lower trays, accommodating various sleeping positions. Its boil-and-bite design makes it customizable for improved comfort and efficacy.

3. Good Morning Snore Solution

A notable player in the TRD market, this device is FDA-approved and designed for comfort with a soft, non-toxic material. It fits most users but comes at a higher price point.

4. aveoTSD

This simple, clinically proven TRD offers a unique suction method to retain the tongue, creating a non-invasive experience. Its one-piece design makes it easy to maintain, although a doctor’s prescription may be required.

5. VitalSleep

VitalSleep has helped over 225,000 snorers and is FDA-approved. It features a boil-and-bite design, making it easy to customize. With its unique air ventilation system, it allows users to breathe freely, regardless of their sleeping position.

Conclusion: Choosing the Right Solution

As our busy lives continue to impose stress and reduce the quality of our sleep, addressing snoring becomes increasingly important. With various devices available, choosing the right one can significantly enhance your comfort and your partner’s sleep quality. While MADs and TRDs can make snoring more manageable, consulting with a healthcare professional is essential to find the most suitable solution for your individual needs.

For those whose snoring may be linked to sleep apnea, more involved treatment options, like CPAP or BiPAP machines, may be necessary. It’s important to approach snoring not just as an inconvenience, but as a health issue that deserves attention. Taking action today can help ensure better sleep for both you and your loved ones.

Best Floor Mattress: Effortless Comfort for Unexpected Guests

Best Floor Mattress: Ensure Comfort for Any Guest Situation

What happens when you find yourself hosting more overnight guests than your home can comfortably accommodate? The dilemma can lead to awkward situations—do you send guests away, or is there a more inviting solution? If your living space allows, the floor could be a viable option, especially when equipped with the right floor mattress.

Many people may cringe at the thought of sleeping on the floor, especially during colder months. In fact, the floor is often perceived as uncomfortable or even an insult to your guests—but that perception can change dramatically with a quality floor mattress.

Understanding the Concept of Floor Mattresses

Contrary to common misconceptions, a floor mattress isn’t simply any old mattress thrown onto the ground. These mattresses are specifically designed for floor use and don’t require a bed frame. While you can technically place a regular mattress on the floor, it’s not designed for that setup; doing so can lead to discomfort and even potential health issues due to lack of ventilation and support.

Sleeping directly on the floor can exacerbate aches and pains, particularly for those suffering from back issues or other chronic ailments. However, a high-quality floor mattress adds a layer of comfort, making sleeping on the ground more tolerable. Regular mattresses, unless specifically designated for floor use, can harbor mold and mildew due to poor airflow. Floor mattresses, on the other hand, are built to facilitate moisture control and provide the necessary support.

Should You Sleep on the Floor?

While sleeping on a flat surface is generally not recommended for spinal health, a floor mattress is an exception worth considering. Traditional beds come equipped with ergonomic mattresses that conform to the body’s contours, thus providing support. The floor, typically made from hard materials like concrete or hardwood, can create pressure points and discomfort. In contrast, floor mattresses are thinner and less dense but offer an additional layer that improves comfort and support compared to sleeping directly on the floor.

These mattresses are often foldable and portable, making them easy to store in closets or even your car in case you need to be the on-the-go guest.

Frankly Mattress Review: The Best Affordable Choice Today

Sleep Frankly Review

The Frankly mattress is a memory foam mattress that has an easily accessible zippered cover that is removable and machine washable. It is a medium firm feel that won’t sink in too much. Frankly derives its name from the idea that a mattress price should be transparent without gimmickry. They always offer the same price without any special promo codes. They offer a 10-year warranty and a 60 night trial with free shipping and returns.

Overview of the Frankly Mattress

This mattress is available exclusively through the Frankly website. The company is headquartered out of Georgia and the mattress is made in China. A queen size Frankly retails for $695 which makes it more aggressively priced than a majority of the online brands.

Here’s a quick video overview of the mattress that includes my initial findings.

How Much Does the Frankly Mattress Cost?

Below are the current prices of the mattress. They only carry queen and king sizes and do not offer promo codes. The pricing will remain consistent so you never have to worry about getting a better deal around typical sales periods which in the mattress industry usually happen around minor holidays like Memorial Day, Labor Day and Black Friday.

Construction of the Frankly Mattress

Here’s a picture of the layers of the mattress. The construction specifications are below.

2″ gel memory foam

1″ adaptive Hi core foam

8″ base foam

My Frankly Mattress Findings

This mattress has a removable, washable cover. It’s easy to unzip, wash and zip back on. Here’s a close up of the zipper system. Although this is a great feature, I still recommend using a mattress protector that is waterproof to keep your mattress in pristine condition.

Frankly mattress coverOverall this mattress is a medium feel. This mattress won’t cradle you as much as others because the transition layer catches you and eases you into the base layer providing proper support. Here’s a picture illustrating sinkage using my 14 lb. bowling ball.

The video below shows how much motion transfer to expect with the Frankly mattress. It is all foam so there really isn’t any.

To give you a better idea of the construction of the mattress, here’s a video showing the inside of the mattress and how each layer reacts.

My Frankly Mattress Recommendation

The online mattress world is becoming increasingly crowded. All these choices is a blessing and a curse. It’s great to have choice but when there are literally hundreds of choices out there, making sure you choose the right mattress can be nerve-wracking. To help you make a better decision it is always best to set a budget and narrow down what particular construction is best for you.

The Frankly mattress is best suited for budget-conscious shoppers looking for an all foam mattress. This mattress is great for isolation motion and reducing partner disturbance. Although the trial period is a bit shorter than most companies, 60 nights is still plenty of time to know if this will be right for you.

If you are turned off by the feel of a dense foam mattress but still want some of the contouring that construction provides, the Frankly mattress will be a good fit because of the dense layer of transition foam and a more breathable, responsive layer at the top.

Frankly removes the fear of getting a better price around a holiday. With their consistently low price you have peace of mind knowing you purchased at the right time.

Nature’s Novel Mattress: Stunning Comfort for Better Sleep

Sweet Zzz Mattress

The Nature’s Novel mattress by Sweet Zzz is a mattress made with natural wool, Talalay latex and a base layer of foam. It comes with a 100 night trial with free shipping and free returns. This mattress is a nice departure from the typical 3 layer foam construction. The layers of latex at the top provide a breathable and supportive surface that makes it easy to change positions at night.

If you live in California, you can try out this mattress in person at their showrooms located in Los Angeles.

Overview of Nature’s Novel Mattress

Here’s a quick video overview of the Nature’s Novel Mattress. As you can see it is a fairly thick mattress that has a really nice optic white cover that has some stretch to it.

Construction of the Sweet Zzz Mattress

nature's novel construction

As you can see from the picture above, the base layer is foam. Above that there are two layers of latex. There is wool in between the top layer and the knit cover which acts as a natural fire barrier.

I’m not sure the exact weight but this is a heavy mattress. Mine came packed in a box the size of the mattress instead of roll packed so you may want to opt for the white glove delivery service for an extra $149.

How Much Does the Nature’s Novel Mattress Cost?

Below are the prices of the mattress before any discounts. Normally SweetZzz will offer discounts on the mattress dropping the prices below considerably.

[table id=40 /]

My Nature’s Novel Mattress Findings

I found this mattress to be on the firmer side which can be expected when you have latex at the top. This means you will sleep more “on” the mattress than “in” it.

Below is my 14 lb. bowling ball on the mattress to illustrate how much sink you can expect.

What I found most remarkable about this mattress is that you get a fair amount of bounce and quick recovery despite it not having a spring system. The two layers of latex at the top are instantly responsive making it easy to change positions. The base layer of foam also helps absorb motion transfer.

Here’s a look inside the mattress. In this video you can see how each layer reacts. The two top layers of latex bounce back instantly and so does the foam base layer which provides a firm foundation for the top two latex layers.

Here’s another photo showing how much each layer gives when adding my 14 lb. bowling ball.

This mattress has good breathability due to the top layers of latex. Below is a picture of the top latex layer. When latex is made, there are holes created by the mold when it is poured. This allows for more air transfer.

My Nature’s Novel Sweet Zzz Mattress Recommendation

If you’re looking for all the benefits that latex has to offer but don’t want to pay the high prices, the Nature’s Novel mattress is a great choice. While there is a base layer of foam, you do get the benefits of natural materials where it counts, at the top of the mattress.

Best Affordable Mattresses Under $500 for Effortless Sleep

Brentwood Home Cypress Mattress Review

We don’t need to buy a mattress every other day. But when we do need to get rid of the old, saggy, uncomfortable mattress and get a new bed, the sheer number of options out there can be overwhelming. Even until ten years ago, there weren’t so many different varieties of mattresses known to man. But today, sleep is a whole industry, with so many different kinds of beds and pillows available that the ordinary person could well feel lost.

There are mattresses made of various materials, from memory foam to latex, and come with different technologies to regulate temperature, minimize sinkage, and contour to the shape of the body. But what does one do when they need a basic, simple mattress to sleep on, instead of something fancy that costs a bomb?

A mattress is supposed to last a long time, at least 10 years and sometimes as long as 25 years or more. But mattresses don’t come cheap, even if you have to buy them once every 10 years. With all the fancy beds available today, most people tend to assume that mattresses aren’t priced lower than $1000. It couldn’t be farther than the truth. Mattresses begin as low as $200, and most of them are capable of providing you with the comfortable sleep you desire. Maybe you don’t have the budget or simply don’t want to spend a ton of money on a mattress with features you don’t require, but it is completely possible to find a high-quality bed under $500. Later, you can always upgrade to a more expensive mattress, if need be.

What are the Different Types Of Mattresses?

The mattress industry has exploded over the last few years. They vary in materials, construction, as well as additional features. When you head to a bedding store to buy a new mattress, there are all chances of getting confused as the SA explains the difference between one type and the next. Whether you are buying a mattress for the first time or want to replace your existing one, it helps to know the different types of mattresses well in advance.

Some of the most common types of mattresses available today are:

Memory Foam Mattress

The most popular material for mattresses, memory foam, offers support and comfort, and the different layers ensure the mattress doesn’t sag in the middle. Memory foam is best known for its ability to conform to the shape of your body to provide the maximum support to your hips, spine, and back.

Gel Infused Mattresses

Although the gel isn’t what the entire mattress is made of, many memory foam mattresses have a cooling layer made of gel, because it helps dissipate body heat effectively. Because memory foam tends to trap body heat and make the sleeper hot, the addition of a gel layer reduces the heat-trapping abilities of the mattress and makes it better suited for people who sleep hot. Ordinary memory foam mattresses, when given a gel cooling layer, tend to become more expensive. Also, the gel feels weird, so you should test it out first to check if you like the feel.

Innerspring Mattress

Mattresses that use springs or coils for internal support are called innerspring. A higher number of coils means better support and conformity to the body shape. Although innerspring mattresses provide ample support and comfort, they usually have a lot of bounce that can be annoying to some.

Latex Mattress

Latex mattresses are of two types: synthetic latex foam and natural latex. Synthetic latex usually has little natural latex in it, but completely natural latex is more expensive, even though it’s also more comfortable. Latex has better cooling properties compared to memory foam, and the varying levels of firmness are suitable for different people.

Pillow Top Mattress

The top layer of a mattress determines how soft or comfortable it feels. Basically, a gel and a pillow top do the same thing, and that makes the mattress feel softer. A pillow top mattress is preferred by those who do not like the feel of a gel. Some mattresses come with a pillow top, but they can also be added separately to any mattress. If you like the soft cushiony sinking feeling in a mattress, then you can buy a pillow top mattress or add a pillow top separately.

Air Beds

Air mattresses have a chamber padded with foam or fiber and filled with air. The air is what gives firmness and support to the mattress. Air beds have adjustable firmness, so you can fill the mattress with air depending on the firmness that you need. Some mattresses have two separate chambers that can be adjusted separately, best for couples who have different firmness requirements.

Water Beds

This is much like an air bed, only filled with water. A waterbed has a chamber padded with foam or fiber and filled with water. In some mattresses, the water is free flowing and moves from one end to the other. In others, the water is “waveless,” with the fiber limiting the movement. The former has more flexibility, while the latter has more support and firmness. Waterbeds are generally soothing for those who sleep hot or those who suffer from a sore back.

Adjustable Beds

Some mattresses come with an adjustable base. This base can be inclined and reclined either with a remote or mechanically. Adjustable bases are also available separately and are compatible with most modern mattresses. They also fit most bed frames. Simply put your mattress on the adjustable base, and incline or recline different parts of the bed to suit your comfort.

How to Choose A Quality Mattress?

Knowing the different types of mattresses available makes your task a little bit easier, but it does not end there. You also have to keep in mind firmness levels, your (and your partner’s) sleeping position, your budget, and the lifespan of the mattress. Choosing a mattress is a very personal decision because your comfort and your sleep quality depend on it. The wrong mattress is not only a waste of money but also has the potential to give you aches and pains in different parts of your anatomy. In fact, one of the biggest causes of back and shoulder pain is an uncomfortable mattress. That is why before making a purchase it is important to consider a few factors.

We have already looked at the different materials that a mattress can be made of. But aside from that, the following five factors also important when buying a new mattress.

Firmness Level: Two mattresses made from the same material can offer two different firmness levels. This is usually because of the construction. To put it simply, there are three basic types of firmness levels in a mattress: firm, medium and soft. However, the categorization used by most mattress brands makes it confusing for the customer to be able to make the right choice. Some use a scale of 1 to 10 to measure firmness, but the scale is usually too broad to know where your own preference would fit. Some brands have a one-size-fits-all firmness, which might make your choice easier but it may not be what you desire. Some companies even use very confusing terms like “relaxed firmness.”

A lot of things go in determining the firmness of a mattress. If you are on the heavier side, you need a mattress that’s firm to avoid sinkage. Side sleepers prefer a softer mattress because it conforms to the natural curve of the body. Stomach sleepers should choose a firm mattress because it supports the spine, while back sleepers can choose any firmness level that feels comfortable and keeps the spine aligned. To choose the proper firmness level of a mattress, it is best to shop from a store where you are able to test the bed before purchase. When shopping online, customer reviews must be checked to find out who the mattress is best suitable for.

Lifespan: The more use you put the mattress to, the sooner it will wear out. A high-quality mattress usually has a lifespan of at least 10 years, but it also depends on the materials and the construction. If you’ve had a mattress for over 10 years, you will notice the obvious signs of wear, which includes poor support, sagging, and greater sinkage. An old mattress can also cause aches and pains because of improper alignment. Latex has the longest lifespan, well above 10 years. It is followed closely by memory foam and hybrid mattresses, which also last close to 10 years. Innerspring mattresses have a much shorter lifespan of a little over 5 years. This is because the coils wear out quickly.

All mattresses have a specific lifespan beyond which day should not be used. What you should consider when buying a mattress is the materials and construction that offer a better lifespan than others.

Budget: If you have all the money in the world you can obviously buy just any mattress that you want. But mattresses can be very expensive, and the price is often one of the deciding factors. In this post, we are talking about mattresses under $500. When buying a new mattress, you should have a set budget and try to find the best quality within that range, because as the overwhelming number of choices will only lead you to keep increasing your budget if you are not careful.

Sleeping Preference and Physical Condition: If you suffer from any physical condition like arthritis, osteoporosis, or chronic pains, and cannot afford to invest in an orthopedic mattress, your next best option is a quality memory foam or latex mattress because they contour to the natural curve of your body and provide the best alignment and support. You may also get an adjustable base for your existing mattress if it isn’t out of shape yet. If you sleep hot, gel memory foam or latex mattress is the best options. Memory foam, without a cooling layer, can trap in body heat and make you hotter during the night.

If you or your partner tosses and turns through the night, you will need a mattress with good motion isolation. Innerspring mattresses have the best motion isolation because of the pocketed coils, but they can also get uncomfortable to the person that tosses and turns. In that regard, if you and your partner have different sleeping preferences, one of the best options is an air bed with dual chambers because each side can be customized independently. You can also try an online mattress company that takes yours and your partner’s inputs and creates a mattress with two customized sides. If you are allergic, memory foam or latex on the best options because they are hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, and dust and mold resistant.

Return policy and Warranty: Aside from the pricing of the mattress what you should also be concerned about is the return policy and the warranty. Most online manufacturers offer a trial period of a few weeks, within which you can return the mattress for a full refund if it does not suit your preferences. Mattresses usually do not have a return option beyond the trial period. As for the warranty, some manufacturers offer a warranty as short as three years whereas others offer a lifetime warranty of 25 years or more. It all depends on the manufacturer.

Having looked at the types of mattresses and the factors to consider before purchase, let’s now talk about the top five mattresses available for under $500.

Top 5 Mattresses Under $500

Lucid Hybrid Mattress

launched in 2016, it has produced some affordable mattresses and adjustable bed frames. Although not all of their products are of the highest quality, their 10-inch Bamboo Charcoal and Aloe Vera hybrid mattress is one of the best that the company has ever made. A hybrid mattress is usually made of memory foam or latex but also has inner springs or pocketed coils for added support. The Lucid hybrid mattress is made up of a 1.5-inch memory foam layer that’s been infused with bamboo charcoal. The next layer is the one-inch of Aloe Vera infused transition foam, and the next layer is the one-inch of foam supported by 5.5-inch tall pocket coils. The bottom layer is also one inch of support foam.

Innerspring mattresses have a certain bounce, but they are also great at providing support and isolating motion. The mattress has a medium firm feel, while the Aloe Vera helps maintain freshness for the longest time. The Lucid hybrid mattress retails for $499, but on sites like Amazon and Overstock, you can get it for as low as $350. There are a couple of downsides, though. Lucid offers only a 30-night sleep trial, so you have to decide fast whether you want to keep or return it. There’s also not a lot of information regarding the density of the foam and the durability, so you have to rely on customer reviews to be able to decide.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • 10-year warranty
  • Hypoallergenic and antimicrobial
  • Minimal off-gassing
  • Medium firm feel
  • Pocket coils for better support

Cons

  • Only 30-night sleep trial
  • No details about the foam used

Pros

  • Healthy materials
  • One-year sleep trial
  • Easy return and refund
  • Affordable
  • Available in two varieties
  • Cooling properties

Cons

  • Off-gassing
  • Poor edge support

This is another hybrid mattress under $500 that combines softness and pressure relief. This 10-inch mattress has a 0.5-inch high-density foam, along with 1.5-inch support foam and 7.5 inches of pocketed coils. The outer cover is made from knitted jacquard fabric. This mattress is specially designed for pressure relief, ideal for those who suffer from aches and pains. While the foam contours to the curves of your body and helps in alignment and pressure relief, the pocketed springs provide the necessary support and firmness. The top cover is microfiber fill for added coziness.

Aside from the affordability, pressure relief, support, and the balance of furnace and softness, the Zinus mattress ships free around the country and has a 100-night sleep trial. The mattress also comes with a 10-year warranty get. However, there is a recurring complaint about this mattress, and that is excessive sagging, loss of shape and support within the first three years. This puts a big question mark on the durability of the mattress, although there are a lot of positive reviews about the product.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Good pressure relief and support
  • Available in two thickness types
  • 100-night sleep trial
  • 10-year warranty

Cons

  • Loss of support and shape within the first three years of use

This 11-inch all foam mattress is made of three layers: 3-inch Energex™ Cooling Comfort layer, 2-inch SmartFlow Air Flow foam layer, and a 6-inch high-density Edge Support Base Foam. The mattress has a medium feel with decent bounce and also a soft cover. The Love & Sleep mattress provides good value at under $500 and also has good pressure relief and support. Because of the cooling comfort layer, the mattress has the ability to regulate body heat and keep the sleeper cool. It also has great motion isolation and is ideal for those who share the bed with a partner.

Pros

  • Good for back and stomach sleepers
  • Affordable
  • Great cooling and motion isolation
  • 100-night sleep trial
  • Free shipping and returns
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Not great for side sleepers

Shop the Love and Sleep Mattress

Modway Elysse Cooling Mattress – $345

Modway is basically a furniture manufacturer, but they also produce quality mattresses in an affordable price range. This one is a 12-inch hybrid mattress made of pocket coils and foam. The top has a quilted cover, followed by 0.75-inch gel-infused memory foam layer. The gel is what helps in keeping the mattress cool because memory foam is known to trap heat. The next two layers are 2-inch memory foam and one-inch responsive foam. The final two layers are 6.25 inches of pocketed coils and one-inch responsive foam. The dense foam layer on top creates a balance with the pocket coils, resulting in a mattress that’s firm and supportive. Although this is a heavy mattress, it certainly offers great value for money.

Pros

  • Good for all types of sleepers
  • No sinkage or motion transfer
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Heavy

Given all these different affordable mattresses, it is safe to conclude that finding a quality mattress under $500 isn’t too difficult. If you know what you want and perform thorough research before purchase, you can end up with the right mattress even within a tight budget.

How Much Does the Amazon Mattress Cost?

Below are the prices as of this writing. They may change though and have gone lower in the past around certain times of the year like Black Friday, Memorial Day, Labor Day and of course Amazon Prime Day.

My Rivet Findings

Amazon with all their resources made this mattress with an optimal firmness to satisfy most sleepers. It is a true medium feel. I’m glad they didn’t go too soft on this one. If you find its too firm you can always add a mattress topper but most sleepers will find this comfortable.

Here’s a picture of my 14 lb. bowling ball on the mattress to illustrate how much sink it has.

Rivet mattress sink

There is really no motion transfer since it is an all foam mattress. Here’s a video showing how little movement you actually get.

Now let’s take a look inside the mattress. This will give you the best idea of how it will feel short of laying down on it.

sinkage amazon mattress

In the video below you can see how fast each layer recovers. There’s nothing particularly unique about this mattress except that the price is amazing and you get a client cover.

Here’s a picture of the cover. There is a zipper at the bottom so you can unzip it and wash if need be but I strongly recommend a mattress protector. Even with a mattress protector and sheets, you will still get the benefits of the Celliant fiber through these layers

Amazon Rivet Mattress Cover

My Amazon Rivet Mattress Recommendation

For the money, you will be hard-pressed to find a better value right now. This mattress is made in the USA. Usually, mattresses with this construction at this price point are made in China. There are certainly better options out there if you want a more luxurious feel or would prefer springs. However, if you are seeking good pressure relief and want minimal partner disturbance on a budget, this is a great choice. Because you also get a 100-night trial, Amazon took the risk out of the equation as well.

Before launching this model, Amazon came out with their “Amazon Basics” mattress which is even cheaper than this one but between the two, I would recommend the Rivet for its feel, quality and the added benefits of Celliant.

Best Orthopedic Pillows: Must-Have Comfort for Sleep

Best Orthopedic Pillows

Without the right bedding, it is almost impossible to get a good night’s sleep. And without sleep, our whole life becomes bleak. Most people can survive without eating for as long as 30 days, but going without sleep easily takes a toll on us (the world record for going without sleep is of 11 days). That’s because our bodies cannot work 24-hours. It needs a few hours to rest and recharge every day.

Think of our bodies as a machine that needs to be switched off for a few hours every day else the systems will overload and result in a breakdown. However, when it comes to sleep, the proper kind of environment and bedding are crucial. Not only does the wrong bedding interfere with sleep quality but it also causes aches and pains.

Sometimes we tend to get carried away with all the options in mattresses and duvets and forget about one of the essential items of bedding – the pillows. Most people are not aware that a pillow supports seven important bones of the neck, which hold up the head. When the pillow fails to provide support, the neck is strained and so is the head. Regular pillows are usually of a typical shape, and either too soft or too firm. They do not align with the spine or the neck and can lead to strains and pain.

You not only need a mattress that aligns to the curve of your body but also a pillow that contours to the shape of your neck and spine. A regular pillow doesn’t offer this benefit. That’s why you need to use an orthopedic pillow for better support.

What Is an Orthopedic Pillow?

Contrary to perceptions, orthopedic bedding isn’t solely meant for those with medical problems like arthritis, osteoporosis or spondylosis. Anyone who wants their body to be better supported while they sleep can use orthopedic bedding. There are orthopedic mattresses and orthopedic pillows. Their purpose is the same, but for different parts of the body.

An orthopedic pillow is specially designed to provide and support to the neck spine and head while a person is sleeping or lying down. They are also often used to support other parts of the body, such as the knees, legs, and back. Normal pillows come in a very typical design; they are either rectangular or square and fluffy. They don’t really have any special shape. Orthopedic pillows are distinguishable from their design. They are designed according to orthopedic guidelines to ensure proper placement and provide support to any part of the body.

Pillows have been conventionally made with fiber (such as cotton) or foam, but orthopedic pillows are usually made with memory foam. This is because memory foam is a heat sensitive material and acquires the shape of the part of the body touching it. However, it takes a while to get its original shape back when it’s no longer in use.

Orthopedic pillows are also called therapeutic pillows because they claim to provide relief from a number of problems that interfere with sleep. From a back bad, sore knees, stiff neck, to sleep apnea and snoring, different orthopedic pillows relieve a number of ailments and sleep disorders by providing support to different parts of the body. In fact, there’s a pillow available for almost every part of the body, often used together with orthopedic mattresses and cushions.

Types of Orthopedic Pillows

There are several types of orthopedic pillows, designed according to body shape and use. Some of them are:

Cervical or Contour Pillow

This is a sleep pillow that has a curved design and meant to align to the contours of the head, neck, spine, shoulders, and back when sleeping or lying down. A cervical pillow is one of the most common types of orthopedic pillows, used to relieve different conditions like neck pain, stiff neck, frozen shoulder sore back, respiratory distress, snoring and sleep apnea.

Neck Pillow

Also called a travel pillow, this is something often seen and used on a flight. A neck pillow is shaped like a horseshoe and is designed to fit around the neck to keep the head supported during long hours of sitting up. This pillow is useful because when your head is resting against a seat, it does not get the support that it needs, which can lead to neck pain and stiff neck and shoulders.

Body Pillow

This is a long, curvy pillow designed to support the entire body. A body pillow has curves that support the head, neck, shoulders, and back. A body pillow can be used by anyone who needs better support to be able to fall asleep. However, it is highly recommended for pregnant women because of the support it provides.

Knee Pillow

This is an hourglass-shaped pillow that is placed between the legs or under the knee to support the legs and keep the spine straight. Not only does a knee pillow provide support to the lower back by aligning the spine but also prevents friction between the legs. It is often used to promote blood circulation in the legs.

Lumbar Pillow

This is a half-moon shaped pillow that’s used to support the lower back or the legs. While in a seated position, a lumbar pillow supports the lower back and provides the correct posture. While lying down, it can be used to elevate the legs, or even under the neck for support and massage.

Wedge Pillow

As the name suggests, this pillow is shaped like a wedge. It provides a sloping surface to rest any part of the body. A wedge pillow is one of the most versatile orthopedic pillows because it can be used for any part of the body. It can be used to support the leg and the knees or to support the head, neck, and shoulders in bed. Because a wedge pillow keeps the head inclined, it is often used to relieve respiratory distress, snoring, or sleep apnea, or even to relieve symptoms of acid reflux. Wedge pillows come in a single piece or can also be folded.

Water Pillow

If you want the utmost flexibility, nothing beats a water pillow. Simply fill the pillow with water, and adjust the height as needed. The water contours to the shape of the body and provide the ideal support.

How to Choose An Orthopedic Pillow?

Given the different types of therapeutic pillows, it can be difficult to make the right choice. Even if you do not suffer from any physical ailment or sleep disorder, it can be useful to have an orthopedic pillow at home, for those times when you have a sore back or stiff shoulders or want to keep your legs elevated. But regardless of what you buy it for, an orthopedic pillow should be purchased carefully, keeping certain factors in mind.

The following are a few of the factors to consider when buying an orthopedic pillow.

Budget: It goes without saying that orthopedic pillows are more expensive than ordinary pillows. They can be as low as $50 or as expensive as $200. Even before you set out to look for orthopedic pillows, it is important to have a specific budget because if you don’t, your budget will skyrocket. There are orthopedic pillows available in every price range, so it’s best to stick to a budget to avoid spending more than necessary.

Sleep position: Orthopedic pillows are designed according to the different sleep positions. It is recommended that you choose a pillow designed for the position that you usually sleep in. Side sleeping is the most common position followed by back and stomach sleeping. A body pillow is usually meant for side sleepers while a wedge pillow is better suited to back sleepers.

Support: If you are buying an orthopedic pillow because of any sleep disorder or physical condition, you need to consider which part of your body you want to support with the pillow. For instance, a neck pillow is designed to support the head neck and shoulders, while a lumbar pillow is meant to support the lower back and legs. If you end up buying a neck pillow for your lower back, it is not going to serve the right purpose.

Physical Ailments: Orthopedic pillows are designed to provide general support to the whole body or different parts of the body. But if you already have existing physical conditions, you may need the more specialized type of support. In such a case, an orthopedic expert is able to recommend the best type of pillow.

Material: Both regular pillows and orthopedic pillows are made of a variety of materials. But the most common material used to make therapeutic pillows is memory foam. Not only is memory foam soft and supportive, but their heat sensitivity makes them mold to any shape. Latex is another material used to make orthopedic pillows and is a better option for those who suffer from allergies. Like memory foam, latex also molds to the shape of the body and provides support and alignment. The outer cover of the pillow can be of cotton, viscose, or polyester.

Ease Of Cleaning: Pillows attract dust and can get very dirty if not cleaned regularly. When buying an orthopedic pillow, make sure to choose one that’s easy to clean. You should be able to vacuum clean it or wash it with water. Not all pillows allow this, so if you want to wash your pillow, you should get a suitable material.

Top 5 Orthopedic Pillows

Now that we have looked at the type of therapeutic pillows available, their uses, and the materials they are usually made of, it’s time to discuss the best orthopedic pillows that you can buy. Although there are several companies making several different types of orthopedic pillows, here we talk about the top five among them.

snuggle pedic

Snuggle-Pedic Ultra-Luxury Bamboo Shredded Memory Foam Pillow

The thought of orthopedic pillows brings to mind various curves that force you to sleep in positions you aren’t used to. The vast majority of orthopedic pillows have curves and contours because they are designed to keep your body in place while you sleep. But a pillow can also provide support and alignment even without being curvy. Take the example of the memory foam orthopedic pillow by Snuggle-Pedic. One of the most popular orthopedic pillows today, the Snuggle-Pedic pillow is shaped like regular pillows but has the ability to support the head, neck, and shoulders. It is filled with shredded memory foam and has a breathable, micro-vented, zipper outer cover that can be washed. The pillow is fully customizable.

Priced at $60, this is one of the most affordable orthopedic pillows out there. Don’t be misled by its shape; even though it doesn’t have any fancy curve, it is excellent at providing support and alignment because of the memory foam molds to the shape of the body. Opening the outer cover also allows you to open the pillows itself, to adjust the stuffing inside. The memory foam is hypoallergenic, so even those with allergies can safely use this pillow. What’s more, Snuggle-Pedic also offers a 90-night sleep trial and free shipping. The product is made entirely in the US and easily available on online sites like Amazon.

Pros

  • Fully customizable
  • Healthy and safe materials
  • Great for chronic pain and sleep apnea
  • Machine washable
  • 90-night sleep trial
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Off-gassing required
  • Requires re-fluffing

Nature's Guest Cervical Support PillowNature’s Guest Cervical Support Pillow

If you want a pillow for neck or shoulder pain that’s not made from foam or latex, Nature’s Guest makes this cervical pillow with microfiber. Nature’s Guest Cervical Support Pillow is recommended by chiropractors to those who suffer from neck and shoulder pain and is priced at around $60.

The cervical pillow has a washable cotton cover, and the filling is made of cotton and wood pulp. The firmness of the pillow can be adjusted by removing or adding filling. The cotton in the cover and in the filling helps in breathing and doesn’t make the pillow hot. The neck roll is adjustable and moves your neck back to the right spot even when you move around. Those suffering from degenerative disc problems claim to have used and benefitted from this pillow. However, it is not too suitable for side sleepers.

Pros

  • Great support for neck and spine
  • Two different heights

If you are a back sleeper, this pillow can be placed under the head to provide support to the neck. Breathable and hypoallergenic, natural latex contours to the shape of your body, and keeps you supported throughout the night. Because natural latex is expensive, the pillow is priced at $99.

Pros

  • Completely natural and eco-friendly
  • Superior natural latex
  • Works for both side and back sleeping

Cons

  • Expensive

Unlike memory foam, the dynamic form does not lose its firmness with use and always returns to shape despite all the molding. The cover is made of bamboo fiber that is soft and breathable, and machine washable. The UTTU Adjustable pillow is cheaper than other options on this list, at $39.

Pros

  • Breathable cover
  • Adjustable firmness

Acesleep Mattress Review: Must-Have for Effortless Comfort

Acesleep Mattress review

The Acesleep mattress is a breathable memory foam mattress with a cover that is cool to the touch. It is on the softer side of the spectrum and is an excellent choice for people looking for a softer foam mattress that is still breathable and supportive. It stands out from the competition with a generous amount of cooling material on the cover and breathable, mesh side panels for maximum airflow.  A queen size currently retails for $889.99.

Overview of the Acesleep Mattress

You can purchase this mattress direct through their website or from Amazon. I would recommend going through their website as the return process will be easier than Amazon. It will ship quickly, in about 5 business days and arrives in a package like this.

Ace Sleep Bag

The mattress will take a little while to get to full shape, I would give it at least a couple days to get the true feel but it should be fine to sleep on about 8 hours after opening.

Here’s a quick video overview of the mattress.

How Much Does the Acesleep Mattress Cost?

Below are the current prices of the Acesleep mattress as listed on their website. This is before applying any discounts. Acesleep now offers $100 off prices below.

Construction of the Acesleep Mattress

Here are some of the construction highlights of this mattress. The top two layers are what really make this mattress feel cool and breathable.

acesleep layers

Luxury Ice Silk Cover

Ice silk fabric, with a new generation technology, brings you extra-soft, ultra breathability and deepest & longest lasting coolness you can ever imagine for a mattress cover.

Eco-Friendly Open-Cell Memory Foam 2½”

Advanced open-cell Eco-friendly plant-based memory foam is proved to sleep 25% cooler than traditional petroleum-based polyurethane by sleep studies.

Bamboo Memory Foam 2″

Natural bamboo charcoal is resistant to dust mites and other bacteria, regulates sleeping temperature and provides best spine support.

Gel Infused Memory Foam Cushioning Layer 1½”

Gel Memory Foam transmits excess heat from the top layers to keep coolness all night and better contour whole body and relieve pressure points as a cushioning layer.

High-Density Sag-Free Foam Base 6″

High density core base is the strong support for mattress, providing the bed a solid and durable foundation.

Here’s a picture of the inside of the mattress where you can see the actual layers.

Ace Sleep Mattress Layers

The top foam layer has tiny holes for breathability. When I pushed down on the top of the mattress with the cover on I could feel air flow through the cover.

acesleep top layerMy Acesleep Findings

This mattress immediately feels cool to the touch. That’s the first thing that really stood out. I then found it to conform very well right away. Here’s a picture of my 14 lb. bowling ball on the mattress to show how much it sinks.

In comparison to other foam mattresses with similar construction, this mattress gives you a medium amount of, “hug”. I will sink in just enough for good pressure relief but not so much as to feel you are trapped.

Ace Sleep SinkageThe video below is a slow-motion bowling ball drop to illustrate how much partner disturbance you might expect. This is an all foam mattress so you won’t notice your partner shifting positions at night.

Here’s a look inside the mattress. The layers are well defined and each has a unique purpose. The top layer is the softest followed by the transition layer underneath. When laying on the mattress I couldn’t feel where one layer started and the other ended. With some mattresses, you definitely feel that and that can be good or bad depending on what type of feel you are looking for. Generally, side sleepers will seek out a mattress that has good transition like this one.

My Acesleep Recommendation

Acesleep has done a great job with the overall construction of this mattress. It is a very versatile feel and will appeal to side and back sleepers. Stomach sleepers may find this mattress a little too soft. They have a 120 day trial period and so they take the risk out of trying it. If you are and/or your partner are side sleepers and prefer a foam mattress but tend to sleep hot, I would try this mattress first.

Stunning Tips to Stop Snoring Effortlessly Tonight

Blog Image How to Stop Snoring
Throughout the US about 70 million people suffer from unsound sleep. They don’t necessarily have to suffer from a sleep disorder; poor quality sleep or not getting the necessary hours of rest often has the same effects as a sleep disorder. Blame it on hectic work schedules or an unhealthy lifestyle, but poor sleep quality has been on the rise for the last many years. Some people suffer from chronic insomnia, some have fragmented sleep, while some people stay up because of ambient factors. Yes, believe it or not, but external factors are often responsible for causing unsound sleep. From noisy neighbors to the sound of traffic, to snoring (leading to the question how to stop snoring), various environmental factors are responsible for contributing to disturbed sleep. Sometimes the source of distraction maybe right next to us. We are talking about snoring. At the same time, snoring is both a disorder and a distraction. However, snoring is also more normal than any other sleep issue. In fact, it isn’t considered an issue at all, not until it starts to disturb the people around the snorer. Snoring is a problem that only the people around the snorer are aware of. Once the person is asleep, they do not know if they snore. In some cases, they may refuse to believe that they snore when told by others. It is often embarrassing, and not many like to admit that their snoring keeps others awake at night. Every person snores at some point. They may snore softly when in a deep sleep or when they have a cold. But it isn’t something regular or permanent. Such snoring is also quite tolerable to others around the sleeper. The problem arises when the snoring is loud enough to not only keep the people in the room awake but also disturb the others in the house even through closed doors. This is when snoring is considered a sleep disorder and needs treatment.

What Is Snoring?

Simply put snoring is the result of a blocked air passageway. It generally happens when there is an obstruction to breathing. When a person sleeps the muscles in the body relax. The problem is, in snorers, the throat muscles also relax and block the air passage. This creates obstructed air movement and does not let the person breathe freely. As a result, the strained breathing creates a noise. It is easy to simply brush aside snoring and not consider it a problem at all. But the fact is the sound of snoring can sometimes exceed 100 decibels, which is louder than the sound of a road drill. Even if the person remains unaware of the fact that he or she snores, the loud noise can cause sleep disturbances to others around him forcing them to seek remedies to stop snoring. The loudness of snoring can lead to chronic insomnia and for sleep quality in others sharing the room with the snorer. Snoring is not a problem when it is transient or because of a condition like a cold. It is also more common among men and those above middle age. Habitual snoring affects around 90 million people in the US alone. Children can also sometimes be habitual snorers, but the generally outgrow it as they get older.

What are the Most Common Causes of Snoring?

As already discussed, the primary cause of snoring is obstruction of the air passage. But the obstruction can stem from various causes. Snoring is more an annoyance than anything else. It is not readily seen as a sleep disorder or a health problem. Snoring can often remain undiagnosed, and even though it may not be dangerous for the person, it can lead to various other problems.

Most Common Causes of Snoring

Excess Weight: Overweight or obese people are more at risk for snoring. In fact, more than half of the total number of people who snore are overweight or obese. Any person with a body mass index of 29.9 or above is considered overweight, while a body mass index of 40 and above is considered obese. BMI is not always the sole yardstick for measuring excess weight. Men with a neck circumference of 17 inches or higher are also at risk for snoring. This is because overweight people have thick palates that narrow down the airway and obstruct breathing. This is not really a disorder but more of a lifestyle problem, affecting a vast number of people in the US. Alcohol: Many people are fond of consuming an alcoholic drink after dinner or before bed because they find it relaxing. Indeed, alcohol does have a relaxing effect on the body. Alcohol is known to relax all the muscles of the body including the throat muscles. When throat muscles relax, they block the airway and obstruct breathing. That is the reason why any person with sleep disorders or respiratory troubles should avoid alcohol at least two hours before bedtime. Nasal Problems: Respiratory or nasal problems can often be the reason behind loud snoring. Chronic nasal congestion and deviated nasal septum are one of the biggest physiological reasons behind snoring. Nasal congestion can have a variety of causes including allergies, common cold, sinusitis, environmental irritants, and nasal polyps. The septum is the wall between the nostrils. When it is crooked, it leads to a condition called deviated nasal septum. This causes airway obstruction and prevents normal breathing, leading to snoring. All types of nasal congestion require a medical diagnosis. Sleep Deprivation: Snoring and sleep deprivation are connected in two ways: sleep-deprived people tend to snore more, and those who snore are also usually sleep deprived. When sleep deprived people finally get to rest, they are more likely to snore than others. Sleep Position: The position in which a person sleeps is also a possible reason for snoring. Those who sleep on their back are more likely to snore than those who sleep on the sides or on the stomach. This is because when a person sleeps on the back, the air passage is narrowed down due to the relaxed throat muscles. Those who sleep on their backs and snore loudly may try changing the sleep position to see if there is any improvement.

What Habitual Snoring Can Lead To?

snoring effects Snoring may not always be the problem itself. Throat muscles relax in every person when they sleep, but when it begins to obstruct the breathing, it becomes a problem. When snoring goes undiagnosed, it can lead to other issues. Some of them are: Obstructive Sleep Apnea: In several cases, snoring is a sign of a more serious disorder called obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is of a number of types, but the most common is obstructive sleep apnea, in which the air passage is blocked by the relaxing throat muscles. This not only causes snoring but also makes the breathing stop and start abruptly throughout the night. As a result, the person fails to get proper rest, wakes up with a dry mouth and throat and feels tired throughout the day. Snoring is usually the first sign of obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep Deprivation: When a person snores it means the breathing is obstructed. And when the breathing is obstructed sleep is hampered. When a person fails to breathe normally, it wakes them up several times at night, leading to chronic sleep deprivation in the long run. Inability to Concentrate: Snoring causes sleep deprivation and excessive daytime sleepiness. As a result, concentration and productivity suffer and the risk of accidents at work and on the road also increases. Health Problems: Failing to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night can lead to various health problems including heart disease and the risk of strokes in heart attacks. Insufficient sleep has also been linked to hormonal imbalances and an increase in appetite and weight gain. Sleep Divorce: Relationships are often affected when one of the partners snores. In fact, it isn’t surprising to find couples who have broken up or divorced because one of them was a loud snorer. Although underestimated, snoring is a big enough reason behind the degrading of relationships.

7 Effective Remedies to Stop Snoring

snoring remedies Although snoring can lead to various problems, it isn’t the end of the world. Snoring can often be managed with a few easy remedies. Some of them are:

Changing Sleep Position

Since back sleepers are more likely to snore, the first remedy to try is changing the sleep position. If you are a back sleeper, try sleeping on your side for a change. If that seems difficult in the beginning use a body pillow for help. When you sleep on your side, your throat muscles do not relax into the air passage and do not obstruct the breathing. Many back sleepers who snore have reported a marked improvement when sleeping on the side.

Losing Weight

Most snorers are overweight, and in that case, losing weight is the only option. Although not too easy, maintaining the ideal body weight is one of the most effective ways to stop snoring. Following a proper diet and exercise is the best place to begin. A healthy BMI is between 21 and 25. Anything lower is underweight, and anything higher is overweight. Besides fat-burning exercises, strength training is also helpful in shedding fat, building muscles, and boosting metabolism.

Avoiding Alcohol and Sedatives

Alcohol and sedatives work the same way. They relax the muscles of the body, including that of the throat. When a person consumes alcohol or sedatives before bedtime, they are more likely to snore because the throat muscles relax further under the influence of the sedatives. Habitual snorers who consume alcohol or sedatives before going to bed should avoid them. This can bring about a significant improvement in snoring.

Practicing Better Sleep Hygiene

Snoring can often be a result of sleep deprivation and a lack of sleep hygiene. Maintaining a proper bedtime routine can alleviate most of the problems. Having a fixed sleep schedule, avoiding coffee and nicotine, and taking short naps are some of the ways to bring about quality sleep and reduce snoring.

Changing Pillows

Mattresses, pillows, and sheets house millions of dust mites and allergens. No matter how many times you wash them, they keep trapping dust and allergens. When a habitual snorer sleeps on such pillows and sheets, it causes allergies and adds to respiratory distress, making snoring worse. That is why pillows and sheets should be regularly changed and kept clean all the time. Also, make sure that the pillows keep your head and neck properly supported. If possible, stack two or three pillows to keep your head elevated while you sleep.

Hot Shower

Warmth helps clear blockages in the airway, removes congestion, and ease respiratory distress. Besides, a warm bath or shower will also help you sleep deeper. This could help lessen snoring that starts in the nose. You could also keep a bottle of saltwater rinse in the shower for rinsing your nose out with to open up the nasal passages. Besides taking a hot bath or shower, you may also consider buying a neti pot to clear the nasal passages with a saltwater solution.

Staying Hydrated

When the body is dehydrated, it produces thicker fluids. When your nasal secretions become thick, it blocks the airway and causes snoring. Dehydration can be one of the biggest reasons behind snoring sometimes. There are snoring sprays that prevent the nasal passages from sticking together.  Drinking enough water during the day often reduces snoring in dehydrated people. However, drinking too much water before bedtime isn’t recommended because it will only make you get up for the bathroom.

In Conclusion

The causes and treatment for snoring aren’t easy to determine without a medical diagnosis. There are anti-snoring devices such as Tongue Stabilizing Devices (or TSDs) and mandibular advancement devices that open up the airway, to prevent obstruction. These mouthpieces should always be used under the supervision of a doctor because only a healthcare practitioner will be able to determine the reason behind the snoring and suggest the right treatment options. In the meanwhile, home remedies and sleep hygiene can be tried to alleviate the distress for the snorer and others around. Snoring though may seem innocuous can be an indicator of a serious underlying health condition. It may even be affecting you in ways that might not be apparent – like affecting your sleep quality, diminishing your capabilities to concentrate on work, or even affecting your relationship with your partner. Surgery for Snoring

Several surgical options are available for treating snoring. These procedures are typically considered when conservative methods, such as lifestyle changes or anti-snoring devices, have failed to provide relief. The type of surgery recommended usually depends on the specific cause of the snoring. Some common surgical procedures include:

  1. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP): This procedure involves removing excess tissue from the soft palate and pharynx, which can reduce airway obstruction and alleviate snoring. The uvula may also be removed or shortened during this procedure.

  2. Palatal implants (Pillar Procedure): This minimally invasive procedure involves inserting small polyester rods into the soft palate. The implants stiffen the soft palate, reducing vibrations that cause snoring.

  3. Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP): This procedure uses a laser to remove or reshape the uvula and a portion of the soft palate. The goal is to reduce airway obstruction and decrease snoring.

  4. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) or Somnoplasty: This procedure uses radiofrequency energy to shrink and tighten the soft palate tissue. The process helps reduce airway obstruction and alleviate snoring.

  5. Genioglossus advancement (GA): This surgical procedure involves repositioning a portion of the lower jaw forward. This helps to pull the tongue forward, opening up the airway and reducing snoring.

  6. Septoplasty: This procedure is performed to correct a deviated septum, which can contribute to snoring. By straightening the nasal septum, airflow through the nasal passages is improved, potentially reducing snoring.

  7. Turbinate reduction: This procedure aims to reduce the size of the nasal turbinates, which are structures inside the nose that can become enlarged and obstruct airflow. Reducing the size of the turbinates can improve nasal breathing and potentially reduce snoring.

It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional, such as an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist), to determine the best course of action based on the specific cause of your snoring. Surgery carries inherent risks, and the benefits and potential complications should be carefully considered before pursuing this treatment option.

Why Do Fat People Snore?

Snoring PIg

Snoring is often more common in people who are overweight or obese, but there are several factors that contribute to this. The primary reason is that excess body fat, particularly in the neck and throat area, can lead to increased pressure on the airways. This additional pressure can partially obstruct the airway, causing vibrations in the surrounding tissues when air is forced through during breathing. These vibrations are what produce the sound of snoring.

Here are some factors that explain why overweight individuals may be more prone to snoring:

  1. Excess fat in the neck and throat: People who are overweight may have extra fat around their neck and throat, which can narrow the airway and make it more prone to collapsing or becoming obstructed during sleep. This increases the likelihood of snoring.

  2. Lower muscle tone: Individuals who are overweight or obese may have decreased muscle tone in the throat and neck, which can lead to increased airway obstruction and vibrations when breathing during sleep.

  3. Sleep position: Overweight individuals often sleep on their back, which can cause the tongue and other soft tissues in the throat to fall back into the airway, partially blocking it and contributing to snoring.

  4. Hormonal factors: Obesity can affect hormone levels in the body, which may contribute to changes in sleep patterns and the likelihood of snoring.

  5. Sleep apnea: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is more common in overweight and obese individuals. This condition is characterized by repeated episodes of partial or complete airway obstruction during sleep, leading to disrupted sleep and frequent snoring.

Sleep Relief: Exclusive Non-Addictive Aid for Better Sleep

Sleep Relief

Sleep Relief from NBI: A Comprehensive Review

Discovering Effective Sleep Solutions

In today’s fast-paced world, achieving a good night’s sleep is becoming increasingly difficult for many. I recently had the opportunity to try Sleep Relief, a sleep supplement developed by NBI, a family-owned company founded by Dr. John Neustadt. Renowned for his extensive research and expertise in integrative medicine, Dr. Neustadt has created formulations grounded in thousands of scientific studies. With a trusted reputation in the industry, NBI stands apart as a brand dedicated to delivering effective health solutions.

The Growing Concern of Sleep Disorders

Sleep-related disorders affect millions globally, driven by factors such as lifestyle changes and inadequate sleep hygiene. Insufficient sleep of 7 to 8 hours each night can pave the way for serious health issues, including heart disease, obesity, and reduced mental clarity. The impact of sleep deprivation is profound, leading many to seek various solutions for better rest.

Historically, people have turned to sleeping pills—the most common solution for those battling insomnia. While they provide quick relief, the addictive nature and potential side effects of these medications present considerable risks. Though once prescribed only by physicians, over-the-counter sleeping pills are now readily available, often leading to increased dependency among users.

As consumer awareness grows, pharmaceutical companies are now developing healthier alternatives. Unlike traditional sleeping pills laden with synthetic chemicals, newer options aim to promote restful sleep gently, without the risk of addiction.

Overview of NBI’s Sleep Relief

Sleep Relief by NBI is positioned as a safer sleep aid crafted from herbal ingredients. The product promises non-addictive relief, allowing users to fall asleep easily and stay asleep throughout the night. But what makes Sleep Relief stand out in a crowded market?

The Backstory on Sleeping Aids

Sleeping aids have been used for centuries, with alcohol and various herbs offering temporary solutions. The evolution of sleep medications began as early as the late 19th century, moving from herbal remedies to formal pharmaceutical compounds like morphine and cannabis, once even prescribed to figures like Queen Victoria for sleep issues.

During the late 20th century, the introduction of over-the-counter options revolutionized sleep aids. Today, melatonin, a hormone critical for regulating sleep, receives considerable attention, along with reimagined formulations that harness the goodness of natural ingredients, reflecting a global trend toward herbal supplements.

Analyzing Sleep Relief: Ingredients and Mechanisms

Sleep Relief utilizes a proprietary bi-phasic, time-release technology, which delivers its ingredients in two stages. This innovative approach allows for immediate effects, helping users fall asleep within 30 to 45 minutes, followed by a sustained release to maintain sleep over four hours.

Key Ingredients in Sleep Relief

1. Melatonin: The supplement contains 1 mg of melatonin, which is crucial for regulating sleep patterns, particularly for those with low natural production.

2. Magnesium: Known for its muscle-relaxing properties, magnesium aids in calming both the body and mind, facilitating a restful state.

3. Amino Acids: Sleep Relief incorporates several sleep-friendly amino acids:
L-Tryptophan: Converts to serotonin and melatonin, promoting mood improvement and better sleep.
L-Theanine: Enhances alpha brain wave activity, helping users fall asleep faster.
Glycine & GABA: Act as calming neurotransmitters, supporting relaxation and rest.

4. Herbs: Notable herbs such as hops, skullcap, ashwagandha, and jujube are included, revered for their adaptogenic and calming properties. NBI uses standardized extracts to ensure consistency and efficacy.

Personal Experience with Sleep Relief

With a recommended serving size of two capsules per night, each bottle offers a 30-day supply. Initially, I started with two caps but found that one was sufficient for me, reflecting its potency.

Previously, I would take 2-3 mg of melatonin to help me fall asleep but would often wake up a few hours later, struggling to return to sleep. Sleep Relief proved a game-changer, significantly reducing nighttime awakenings and providing a seamless night’s rest.

Practical and small in size, the capsules are easy to swallow. With a price tag of $32 for a bottle containing 60 capsules, Sleep Relief emerges as an affordable option. Free from wheat, corn, dairy, and soy, these capsules also lack added colors, preservatives, or flavors, underscoring NBI’s commitment to clean, quality ingredients.

Conclusion: A Reliable Sleep Solution

In a world where rest is constantly compromised, Sleep Relief from NBI presents a promising alternative to traditional sleep aids. Bolstered by Dr. Neustadt’s expertise and a thoughtful formulation, this supplement offers a gentle, effective way to improve sleep without the risks associated with conventional sleeping pills. If you’re seeking a reliable sleep solution, Sleep Relief might just be the answer to reclaiming your much-needed rest.

AmazonBasics Mattress: Must-Have for Effortless Comfort

Amazon Basics Mattress Review

Amazon has recently unveiled its own memory foam mattress as part of the AmazonBasics Collection, and for many consumers, it’s becoming a go-to option in the crowded mattress market. I purchased the 12-inch variant, as I have often found that 8-inch mattresses do not provide adequate support, especially for those weighing around 200 lbs. Upon reviewing the AmazonBasics mattress, it’s evident that it leans towards the softer side compared to similar models I have evaluated. With a competitive price point, this mattress certainly stands out among the numerous brands available on Amazon, such as Zinus and Lucid.

Overview of the AmazonBasics Mattress

Exclusively available on Amazon.com, the AmazonBasics Mattress is also Prime eligible, offering quick shipping for those in need of immediate comfort. The mattress features a straightforward cover design—functional without unnecessary embellishments—as you won’t notice it once topped with sheets.

For those who prefer a visual summary, here’s a quick video overview demonstrating what the mattress looks like and its basic features.

How Much Does the AmazonBasics Mattress Cost?

Pricing for the AmazonBasics mattress is impressively low, particularly for the 12-inch model. As of this writing, a queen size is priced at just $260. Here is a snapshot of prices for different thicknesses, but it’s always wise to check the current rates directly on Amazon, especially during promotional events like Black Friday and Prime Day.

| Size | Price |
|————|————-|
| Twin | $X |
| Full | $Y |
| Queen | $260 |
| King | $Z |

Construction of the AmazonBasics Mattress

The construction of the AmazonBasics mattress is where it truly shines. All three models—8-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch—feature the same foam layering system:

Top Layer: A memory foam layer that adapts to the body’s shape and weight, ensuring supportive comfort across various sleep positions.
Second Layer: Contains breathable holes enhancing airflow throughout the mattress, further contributing to a cool sleeping surface.
Third Layer: A wavy foam design that aids in airflow while offering adequate support.
Materials: All foam used in construction is CertiPUR-US Certified, ensuring durability, safety, and environmental products. The top fabric is Oeko-Tex Certified, combining softness with strength.
Dimensions: The 12-inch variant measures 75 by 39 inches and weighs 55.4 pounds, complete with a removable cover for easy washing.

An interesting aspect of the design is the dual-layer convoluted foam base, which aims to enhance comfort while maintaining support.

My Personal Experience with the AmazonBasics Mattress

In my subjective experience, the AmazonBasics mattress is notably softer than many others I have encountered. Weighing 200 lbs., I found it provided satisfactory support. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for stomach sleepers who weigh over 170 lbs., as it may lack the firmness needed for that sleeping position. The 8-inch and 10-inch models might not offer sufficient support for anyone over 200 lbs; despite this, the 12-inch model does the job well at its price point.

To visualize its comfort level, consider a bowling ball—a 14 lb. weight placed on the mattress shows a significant sinkage that illustrates its plush surface. Additionally, I tested the motion transfer of the mattress; it performs well in containing movements compared to traditional spring mattresses, making it a decent choice for couples with varying sleeping patterns.

AmazonBasics Mattress Recommendations

What stands out most about the AmazonBasics mattress is its incredible value. A 12-inch memory foam mattress delivered to your home for $260 is tough to match. However, potential buyers should approach with some caution; if you find that it doesn’t suit your preferences upon trying it, the return process isn’t particularly straightforward and could be more trouble than it’s worth given the low initial cost.

If you’re comfortable with memory foam and are seeking a mattress that is soft yet supportive, I highly recommend giving the AmazonBasics mattress serious consideration. On the other hand, if you prefer a firmer feel, exploring alternatives like the Lucid Hybrid may be prudent. Overall, Amazon did not disappoint with this mattress offering; its astonishing price and comfort make it a worthy contender, especially for those in need of a practical sleeping solution in a temporary or transient living situation.

Explore the value and convenience of the AmazonBasics Mattress today and discover how it can enhance your sleep experience.

Yaasa is quickly establishing itself as a go-to brand for innovative sleep solutions, and the Yaasa ONE mattress exemplifies this trend. I had the opportunity to test this mattress firsthand and found it to offer great value, especially considering its queen size retails at a competitive $899. While it may not possess the luxurious feel of its predecessor, the original Yaasa mattress, it certainly delivers on comfort and quality. What’s more, there’s an exciting promotion: if you purchase a Yaasa adjustable bed, you’ll receive the Yaasa ONE mattress for free. Interested in learning more about the adjustable bed? Be sure to check out my complete review.

Overview of the Yaasa ONE

The Yaasa ONE mattress is delivered in a compact box, similar to many other online mattress brands. Proudly made in the USA, this mattress ships quickly, typically arriving at your doorstep within five business days after ordering.

Upon unpacking, you’ll notice the mattress is tightly roll-packed yet features pocket coils that allow for easy transition. When you cut the plastic, the mattress begins to expand rapidly. Initially, you’ll see the springs springing back into shape, followed by the foam layers gradually puffing up to their intended form.

Pricing of the Yaasa ONE Mattress

Here’s a look at the current pricing for the Yaasa ONE mattress:

Twin: $699
Full: $799
Queen: $899
King: $1,199

As you can see, the pricing remains competitive within the hybrid mattress market, making it an accessible option for many.

Construction Details of the Yaasa ONE

The Yaasa ONE mattress boasts a well-thought-out construction that combines comfort and support:

Cooling Infinity Foam

This unique foam layer offers both contoured support and breathability, ensuring you enjoy the coolest night’s sleep possible.

Comforting Transition Layers

These responsive layers strike a perfect balance, catering to your individual comfort needs without compromising support.

Supportive Pocket Coil System

The advanced pocket coil system provides long-lasting durability and ensures responsiveness across the entire sleeping surface.

My Yaasa ONE Experience

In terms of firmness, I’d categorize the Yaasa ONE on the medium-firm side of the scale. This means less sinking, as the coil system effectively supports your body. If you prefer a mattress that doesn’t come with a “stuck-in-the-mud” feel, this could be an ideal choice for you.

To give you a hands-on perspective, I placed a 14 lb. bowling ball on the mattress to demonstrate the level of sinkage compared to other models I’ve tested. Check out the bounce feature in the accompanying video to see how the coils perform. While some motion transfer is inevitable due to the coil system, it’s minimal, making it suitable for couples who share a bed.

Best Features of the Yaasa ONE

If you’re in the market for a hybrid mattress that neither traps heat nor compromises on support, the Yaasa ONE is an exceptional option. It excels in promoting airflow, thanks to its innovative cooling foam, ensuring you stay comfortable throughout the night.

Moreover, if you’re also considering an adjustable bed, the promotion is hard to pass up. For an additional $600, you can get a stylish, durable Yaasa adjustable bed that perfectly pairs with the Yaasa ONE mattress. The current price for a queen-size adjustable bed is $1,499, making it a fantastic deal.

Conclusion

In summary, the Yaasa ONE mattress strikes a commendable balance between quality and affordability, making it a strong contender in the crowded mattress market. Its thoughtful construction and medium-firm feel make it suitable for a wide range of sleepers. Add in the special offer on the adjustable bed, and the value becomes undeniable.

Best Stunning Sleep Headphones for Effortless Relaxation

Best Sleep Headphones

When it comes to achieving a restful night’s sleep, environmental distractions often stand in the way. Surprisingly, many people overlook how much noise can impact their sleep quality. Studies indicate that even individuals without diagnosed sleep disorders frequently struggle to sleep well due to external disturbances. The sleep environment encompasses various factors, from temperature and mattress quality to unwanted noise—a common issue in urban settings where control over sound is limited.

Imagine being kept awake by the sounds of children playing above you, a roommate’s late-night music, the rush of traffic outside, or a partner’s snoring. These distractions can significantly hinder your ability to fall and stay asleep, despite their seemingly trivial nature. Urban dwellers, in particular, face unique challenges as they navigate a cacophony of sounds encroaching on their sleep sanctuary.

To counteract these disturbances, technology has provided various solutions, from earplugs to white noise machines. One innovative option that has gained traction is sleep headphones, specifically designed to help you block out unwanted sounds while enjoying soothing audio. In this article, we’ll explore the best sleep headphones that can transform your nighttime experience.

Understanding Sleep Headphones

Sleep headphones differ significantly from standard audio devices. While traditional headphones focus on high-fidelity sound for music or communication, sleep headphones prioritize comfort and noise reduction. Most sleep-centric designs appear similar to headbands with built-in earplugs, ergonomically shaped to fit snugly around your head regardless of your sleeping position. Some models even integrate eye masks, providing a complete sensory blackout for those sensitive to light and sound.

Types of Noise Cancellation: Passive vs. Active

Before diving into the options, it’s essential to understand the different technologies involved in noise cancellation. Passive noise isolation functions much like plugging your ears—you’ll want a snug fit to block ambient sounds. This type typically comes in in-ear plugs or over-ear versions and doesn’t rely on technology.

On the other hand, active noise cancellation (ANC) involves more advanced technology. These headphones feature built-in microphones that capture surrounding noise and generate counteracting sound waves, effectively cancelling out distractions. ANC is especially effective against consistent noises like low chatter or engine sounds but may struggle with sudden, sharp noises such as alarms or slamming doors.

Choosing the Best Sleep Headphones

When searching for the perfect pair of sleep headphones, several factors should guide your decision:

Comfort is Key

Since you’ll likely wear these headphones for several hours each night, comfort is paramount. Many individuals prefer fabric headphones that feel cozy like a headband, allowing restful sleep in any position. If you’re prone to overheating during the night, opt for breathable materials that won’t trap heat.

Price and Quality

Noise cancellation headphones vary significantly in price. While budget-friendly options can be tempting, investing in quality often yields better results. Active noise-canceling technology tends to be more expensive due to the complexity involved, so make sure to read reviews and specifications before purchasing.

Wired vs. Wireless

Wireless sleep headphones are increasingly popular as they free you from the hassle of tangled cords. However, if you prefer a wired option, ensure the cable length allows for comfortable movement during sleep without risk of tangling.

Battery Life

For active noise-canceling headphones, battery life is critical. Aim for models with at least six hours of playtime to ensure uninterrupted use through the night. Many devices utilize replaceable batteries, so keep extras on hand for emergencies.

Recommended Best Sleep Headphones

1. Able Planet Sound Clarity NC510B

For first-time buyers seeking an affordable option, the Able Planet NC510B offers great value. Lightweight and comfortable, this model features powerful noise cancellation, effectively blocking out sounds like airplane engines and conversations. The quality of its audio rivals higher-end models, making it an excellent choice for both sleeping and casual listening.

2. CozyPhones Sleep Headphones

Priced at just $19, CozyPhones are among the most affordable options available. Their fabric headband design ensures comfort, allowing you to forget they are on while you sleep. The built-in speakers provide a soothing sound experience without overwhelming audio quality. However, users should be cautious, as the speakers can shift if you move a lot during the night.

3. Logitech Ultimate Ears UE9000

If you need a versatile pair of headphones for multiple uses, the Logitech UE9000 provides exceptional sound quality and comfort. Although it’s on the pricier side, the combination of wired and wireless capabilities, along with long battery life, makes it worth considering.

4. Bose QuietComfort 35 (Series II)

For those willing to splurge, the Bose QuietComfort 35 Series II is renowned for its outstanding noise cancellation and comfort. Its Alexa-enabled feature allows for hands-free adjustments, making this device incredibly user-friendly.

5. Sony MDR-1RNC

Sony’s MDR-1RNC aims to balance top-notch audio quality with effective noise cancellation. While it may not completely eliminate all sounds, its three noise-cancellation modes cater to various environments, making it a well-rounded choice for travelers and casual listeners alike.

What to Expect With Sleep Headphones

While sleep headphones can significantly improve your sleep quality by reducing distractions, they won’t block out every sound entirely. Be realistic about your expectations; no device currently on the market can create a perfectly silent atmosphere. Furthermore, comfort and fit should be your guiding principles—be prepared to try a few pairs to find what works best for your sleeping style.

In conclusion, investing in the best sleep headphones can make a noticeable difference in your sleep quality. As you explore the various options available, prioritize comfort, battery life, and whether you prefer wired or wireless models. With the right pair, you can finally drift into peaceful slumber despite the distractions that surround you.

Zonkd Mattress Review: Must-Have for Effortless Comfort

Zonkd Mattress 1

The Zonkd mattress is a memory foam and Talalay latex mattress that comes shipped to your door in a box. It departs from the typical 3 layer foam mattress by adding a layer of latex which is springy. This makes the mattress more resilient an easier to switch positions at night. Zonkd was created by mattress industry veterans who sought out to create their idea of an optimal mattress at a very competitive price. The Zonkd comes in a soft medium and firm option and for this review, I tried the medium firmness.

Overview of the Zonkd Mattress

Your Zonkd mattress will arrive in a box to your door. Shipping is fast as the mattress is Made in the USA. Here’s what it looks like out of the box.

Zonkd supplies you with a letter opener to cut through the plastic.

Zonkd Unboxing

Here’s a photo of the mattress just a few minutes after unboxing. The cover has the company name stitched into the top.

zonkd

You will also find a tag labeling which firmness you have. For this review, I received a medium.

zonkd medium

Here’s a quick video overview of the mattress. What I first noticed about it was how soft yet supportive it is.

Construction of the Zonkd Mattress

zonkd layers

Here are the construction specifications as listed by the company.

  1. Cover
We put just as much thought into what covers our mattress, as we put into what is on the inside because we wanted something that not only felt good, but looked good. Our mattress cover is a 550 gram double-knit cover for a loftier and softer feel that we’ve treated with antimicrobial properties to keep the mattress fresh year after year. The side border is upholstery grade fabric that will stand the test of time and not break down. With decorative tape and an embroidered logo on top, it is almost too soft and too attractive to cover with bedding.
  2. Conductive Contour LayerTwo inches of Copper Gel-infused memory foam contours to your body while dispersing body heat which keeps the sleeper cool and helps maintain the memory foam’s shape allowing for better spinal support all night long. In addition to its conductive properties, copper is believed to play many important roles in maintaining a healthy body.
  3.  Response LayerTwo inches of high-grade perforated Talalay Latex ensures maximum airflow for buoyancy and breathability. It is hypoallergenic and all natural, so it doesn’t have the negative chemical effects and smell that come from polyurethane foam. The Talalay Latex gives our mattress a springy feel to counteract the sinking feeling associated with traditional memory foam mattresses. This is the layer we alter the density of to create our different firmness levels. With the guidance of a chiropractor, we’ve created a questionnaire to help sleepers decide which firmness level best suits their needs.
  4. Foundation LayerEight inches of a solid base provides stability and durability- night after night.

How much does the Zonkd Cost?

Here are the latest prices of the mattress.

My Zonkd Findings

This mattress gives you a cozy and conforming feel with good support without the need for springs. Here’s a photo illustrating how much sink you can expect with my 14lb. bowling ball.

zonkd mattress sink

The video below illustrates motion transfer on the mattress. You’ll see that there really isn’t any motion transfer but the mattress does have a slight bounce to it due to the middle latex layer.

This is what the inside of the mattress looks like. It has a zippered cover so it was easy to remove.

You can clearly see the distinct layers starting with the copper-infused foam layer on the top followed by the latex layer and finally the base foam.

zonkd layers

The clip below shows how each layer responds. The latex layer in the middle acts like a spring system in that it provides additional support and contouring and some bounce.

My Recommendation

The Zonkd mattress is a really well-made mattress. You will really appreciate the layer of latex. Latex in general costs more than foam but for good reason. It’s a sustainable material that is very resilient. It will help prevent the mattress from breaking down prematurely and provides great support and added breathability.

One complaint I hear from people who sleep on an all foam mattress is that it can be hard to change positions at night. Sort of like climbing out of a divot. With the layer of latex, this becomes much less of an issue. People transitioning from a traditional innerspring mattress will appreciate the subtle bounce the latex layer provide while not taking away from the contouring benefits of the copper-infused top layer of foam.

The medium firm felt great and contoured a little better than most medium-firm mattresses I have tried. It will work for side and back sleepers. Dedicated side sleepers will probably want to go with the soft while dedicated stomach sleepers should likely go with the firm.

Smartphone Sleep: Exclusive Tips for Effortless Rest

cell phone sleep study

We live in an age dominated by smartphones, and while these devices have transformed the way we communicate and access information, they may simultaneously be jeopardizing our sleep quality. With sleep deprivation rates soaring, particularly due to increased screen time before bed, it’s crucial to understand the ways modern technology impacts our nightly rest. Research indicates that over 95% of individuals utilize some form of electronic device prior to sleep. Here’s an exploration of how smartphones are affecting our ability to achieve a good night’s rest.

The Disruption of Your Bedtime Routine

The allure of scrolling through social media or playing games just before bedtime can be hard to resist. However, this activity can disrupt your sleep schedule. Engaging with your smartphone right before sleep activates your brain, often triggering hormones linked to alertness. This condition hampers your ability to transition into a restful state.

Notifications from incoming calls, texts, and social media alerts can also fracture sleep cycles. Many adults, despite understanding this impact, keep their notification ringer on throughout the night, with about one-fifth of adults admitting to this habit. Even minor disturbances can affect both REM and non-REM cycles, leaving you groggy the following day.

It’s essential to associate your bed solely with sleep. Rather than texting or watching videos, reserve your nighttime sanctuary for rest. By doing so, you strengthen the mental connection between bed and sleep, making it easier to doze off.

How Technology Affects Children and Teens

Sleep issues are not confined to adults. Children are increasingly experiencing insomnia, with the mere presence of screens in their bedrooms proven to disrupt sleep patterns. While television has long been a culprit, smartphones are now a significant contributor to sleep deprivation in kids.

The Teen Sleep Crisis

Teens face an acute risk of sleep deprivation linked to smartphone use. With their need for around eight-and-a-half hours of sleep per night, only about 15% of adolescents manage to achieve this. The temptation to use smartphones late into the night compounds existing sleep challenges. Over three-quarters of teenagers admit to using their devices secretly when they should be sleeping, resulting in difficulties concentrating at school.

Blue Light and Its Effects on Sleep

One of the most significant threats to our sleep patterns comes from the blue light emitted by smartphones and other devices. This short wavelength light mimics sunlight and tricks our bodies into thinking it’s still daytime, thus disrupting the circadian rhythm.

When blue light enters our eyes, it inhibits melatonin production—a hormone crucial for sleep regulation. Consequently, the brain receives conflicting signals that keep us awake. Staring at screens acts like a “reset” button, misleading our bodies into remaining alert when they should be winding down for the night.

Stress and Anxiety: The Smartphone Connection

Ongoing exposure to our smartphones can exacerbate anxiety levels, further complicating our ability to sleep well. The stress resulting from a busy day, compounded by the excitement or stress of late-night screen time, can lead to physiological responses, like increased cortisol levels. This “fight or flight” reaction, useful in past survival scenarios, has become an inconvenience in today’s tech-driven world.

For many, the thought of being away from their smartphone induces a sense of separation anxiety, creating a cycle where the compulsion to check messages persists, ultimately hindering relaxation and sleep.

Health Consequences of Insufficient Sleep

A good night’s sleep is vital for overall health. Lack of sleep is linked to a range of health issues, including:

Memory Impairment: Sleep is essential for consolidating new information. Without it, both short-term and long-term memory can suffer.
Reduced Concentration: Difficulty focusing can heighten risks during activities like driving or operating machinery.
Mood Disorders: Chronic insomnia can heighten symptoms of depression and anxiety, creating a feedback loop of poor mental health.
Weakened Immune System: Inadequate sleep compromises your immune response, making you more susceptible to illnesses.
Increased Blood Pressure: Short sleep durations elevate the risk for heart disease and stroke.
Weight Gain: Hormonal imbalances related to sleep deficiency can lead to overeating and obesity.
Diabetes Risk: Sleep deprivation impacts insulin sensitivity, raising the chance of developing Type II diabetes.

For children and teenagers, the impact is even more pronounced. Poor sleep can lead to:

Academic Struggles: Sleep-deprived children often struggle to process information effectively, leading to declining grades.
Social Isolation: Difficulty concentrating can hinder conversations and friendships at school.
Mood Swings: Irritability can escalate due to insufficient sleep, resulting in behavioral issues.
Poor Decision Making: Lack of sleep can impact impulse control, leading to reckless choices—particularly among teenagers.

Tips for Better Sleep in the Smartphone Era

To combat the negative effects of smartphone use on sleep, consider the following strategies:

Dim the Screen

Nighttime usage should involve dimming your screen brightness. This simple adjustment helps your eyes adapt and signals to your brain that it’s time to wind down.

Limit Screen Time

Reduce your overall screen usage after sunset. Allocate time for more calming activities, such as reading a book or relaxing in a bath.

Curb Social Media Engagement

Social media can consume precious time—set limits on your usage, as it can significantly reduce stress levels and improve your sleep quality.

Establish a Screen-Free Zone

Aim to disconnect from screens at least 30-60 minutes before bed. Create a sleep-friendly environment by keeping devices out of your bedroom and silencing notifications.

Lead by Example

For parents, modeling good habits is essential. Set device curfews for the entire family to encourage screen-free wind-down activities, such as reading together or engaging in board games.

Embracing Technology for Better Sleep

The intersection of technology and sleep is not all negative; new innovations bring potential solutions for those struggling with sleep issues. Smartphone features now include:

Sleep Tracking Applications: These tools help users monitor sleep quality, revealing patterns that could indicate areas for improvement.
Personalized Sleep Recommendations: Advanced algorithms assist in determining ideal bedtimes based on individual circadian rhythms.
Reduced Blue Light Exposure: Many devices now incorporate “night mode” settings that shift display colors to reduce blue light, helping users transition to sleep more easily.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s crucial to recognize that spending excessive time on smartphones—especially at night—can severely impact sleep quality. By minimizing screen engagement in the evening, you can pave the way for more peaceful, restorative nights. Prioritizing sleep not only enhances daily performance but also contributes greatly to long-term health and well-being.

Sleep Deprivation: Exclusive Tips to Overcome This Risky Epidemic

Sleep Deprivation: How It Affects You, Society, and the Economy

Sleep is an essential pillar of our health, significantly influencing our ability to remain alert and functional. In fact, sleep could be considered even more vital than food; without adequate rest, the nourishment we consume fails to support our well-being effectively. Alarmingly, a significant portion of the urban population grapples with sleep deprivation, marking it as a growing issue. A person who consistently sleeps fewer than seven hours each night is categorized as sleep deprived. While chronic sleep deprivation can affect individuals of all ages, it is predominantly observed among adults and the elderly.

The Sleep Requirements by Age Group

Children require about nine or more hours of sleep nightly, while teenagers need approximately nine hours. Adults, on the other hand, typically need between seven to eight hours of restful sleep. Importantly, the amount of sleep you need does not solely depend on how tired you feel. Consistently falling short of your sleep quota can lead to daytime fatigue and a myriad of long-term health issues. Recognizing the importance of sleep is critical for both personal wellbeing and broader societal health.

The Societal Impact of Sleep Deprivation

Sleep deprivation has emerged as a widespread epidemic, largely driven by our hectic work life and fast-paced lifestyle. Shockingly, statistics reveal that approximately 40% of children, 90% of teenagers, 70% of college students, and 35% of working adults consistently fail to meet their sleep needs. Ironically, sleep is often deprioritized, with many individuals viewing it as a waste of time. Rather than resting, many opt to stay awake to meet work demands or fulfill personal projects, leading to far-reaching consequences for health, society, and economy.

Professions Most Affected by Sleep Deprivation

Occupational demands can significantly contribute to sleep deprivation. In a survey conducted by Sleepy’s, certain job roles emerged as particularly sleep-deprived. Roles in healthcare, teaching, and emergency services frequently lead to disrupted sleep patterns. Conversely, professions with structured hours, such as forest logging and hairstyling, tend to report better rest. This underscores the link between job demands and sleep quality, highlighting a critical area for workplace reforms.

Understanding the Causes of Sleep Deprivation

The root causes of sleep deprivation are highly individualized. For some, staying up late is a lifestyle choice shared among friends or family. However, for others, the struggle may be due to various health conditions—such as heart disease, kidney issues, and hormonal imbalances—that hinder the ability to rest adequately.

Additionally, sleep disorders like insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome are significant contributors to poor sleep quality. Erratic work schedules, often associated with shift work, can further exacerbate sleep challenges. Moreover, lifestyle choices, including screen time before bed and the consumption of stimulants, can interfere with sleep. A chaotic sleeping environment, filled with noise or uncomfortable bedding, can also lead to restless nights.

The Profound Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Health

Even a couple of nights of inadequate sleep can leave you feeling drained. However, chronic lack of sleep can have severe repercussions for both mental and physical health. Mood disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and increased stress levels are some immediate concerns linked to sleep deprivation. Over time, these can escalate into hormonal imbalances, diminished immunity, compromised memory, and severe health issues, including high blood pressure, obesity, and depression. The toll of sleep deprivation is evident in the growing number of individuals suffering from these chronic conditions.

The Broader Implications for Society and the Economy

The consequences of sleep deprivation ripple through society, influencing everything from academic performance to workplace efficiency. It can also contribute to marital discord and increase the risk of obesity in both children and adults. Economically, sleep deprivation costs the nation approximately $411 billion annually. This staggering figure includes lost workdays, decreased productivity, and the societal costs associated with accidents caused by drowsy driving.

Addressing Sleep Deprivation: Practical Solutions

Fortunately, many factors influencing sleep deprivation are manageable. Here are some actionable strategies to combat this issue and enhance sleep quality:

Cultivating a Sleep-Conducive Environment: Designate your bedroom solely for sleep. Keep distractions like electronics and work materials out, eliminating ambient noise and light.

Reassessing Your Bedding: Invest in a comfortable mattress and quality pillows. The right bedding can significantly bolster sleep quality.

Limiting Screen Time Before Bed: Reduce exposure to blue light from devices at least two hours before sleeping to promote melatonin production, the sleep hormone.

Breaking Bad Habits: Cutting down on caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco—especially before bed—can aid in achieving better sleep.

Practicing Good Sleep Hygiene: Establishing a consistent sleep routine, maintaining a clean sleeping environment, and opting for lighter dinners can boost sleep quality.

In conclusion, sleep deprivation impacts millions worldwide, affecting personal health, societal dynamics, and the economy at large. By raising awareness and addressing this pressing issue, we can cultivate a culture that values and prioritizes restorative sleep. The potential to reclaim productivity and enhance well-being begins with understanding and addressing sleep deprivation. For more visual insights on this topic, check out the accompanying infographic.
