Woolroom vs Birch Mattress (2026): Wool Microcoils vs Organic Latex
Birch Natural and Woolroom’s wool-forward models may look similarly ‘natural’ on paper, but the sensation is likely to differ because Birch uses GOLS organic latex and Woolroom Classic, Deluxe and Luxury use wool and layered springs instead.
Evidence note: We compared current published manufacturer specifications, certifications and policies. This is not a simultaneous Yawnder hands-on test of these mattresses. No comparative test score or firsthand winner is claimed.

What the mattress layers actually do
Woolroom Deluxe relies on wool and layers of nano/microcoils for spring-based cushioning. Birch Natural uses an organic cotton cover, New Zealand wool, GOLS-certified natural latex and an individually wrapped steel-coil support system. The latex is the big functional difference: it acts as an elastic, continuously conforming cushion between the sleeper and the coils. Woolroom’s smaller comfort coils deliver a different style of pushback.
For someone who wants no latex comfort layer, Woolroom Deluxe, Classic and Luxury fit that filter. Woolroom Hybrid Latex and Birch Natural both contain latex, but Woolroom uses Talalay and Birch highlights GOLS-certified organic latex. Avoid calling one inherently cooler or more durable just from materials.
Certifications and natural-material claims
Birch publishes GOLS and GREENGUARD Gold claims for its mattress materials/finished product; its support materials page describes natural wool, organic latex, organic cotton, and steel. Woolroom emphasizes traceable British wool, glue-free mattress fillings, and a wool-based flame barrier. These are different disclosures rather than directly comparable test scores. For allergies, the relevant question is whether the exact model includes latex—not whether a brand advertises natural materials.
Which may suit your sleeping style?
Side sleepers: Woolroom’s Deluxe/Luxury cushioning may appeal if you prefer wool and springs, while Birch Natural supplies springy latex conformity. Check shoulder pressure on each; adding a topper changes both models.
Back sleepers: Birch markets Natural as medium-firm, while Woolroom lists different tensions. Decide whether you want the lively feel of latex or the nested comfort-coil response of wool-based upholstery.
Couples: pocketed coils are used by both, but we have not compared their motion transmission, edge compression or heat retention under standardized conditions. Test these rather than interpreting ingredient lists as performance rankings.
Trial policies and real price
Woolroom’s 100-night mattress trial requires purchasing an eligible Deluxe or Organic Washable Wool protector in the same transaction; a 60-night minimum break-in applies. Birch advertises a separate home trial, generally 365 nights (brand-direct) with a minimum adjustment period; verify current terms for your model and seller. For an apples-to-apples cost, compare the same size, required protector expense, any accessories and return fees rather than percentage-discount banners.
