The Real Cost of Buying a Mattress: Delivery, Returns and Financing

YAWNDER BUYING GUIDE · OCTOBER 2026

Disclosure: Yawnder sells mattresses and sleep products and may earn commissions from qualifying purchases. Prices and policies are snapshots and can change. Confirm the terms for your exact order and retailer before paying.

Quick verdict: compare the total, not the discount

A mattress’s advertised price is only the starting point. To find your actual cost, add the selected size and upgrades, delivery or setup, any foundation or accessories you need, applicable taxes and any financing charges. Then separately check what you could lose if you return or exchange it.

Compare the same size and configuration at each seller. A larger discount on a different model or a bundle you do not need may not be the better deal.

What to include in the real cost of a mattress

Cost What to check When it applies
Mattress Exact size, model, firmness and sale price At purchase
Optional upgrades Cooling cover, pillow top or other selected features If selected
Delivery and setup Doorstep versus in-home setup, service area and haul-away If the chosen service carries a fee
Foundation and accessories Compatible base, protector, sheets or deep-pocket bedding If needed or selected
Taxes and required fees Amounts shown for your delivery address At checkout where applicable
Financing APR, total payments, fees and promotional conditions If financing is selected
Return or exchange Eligibility, pickup/processing fees, delivery refunds and exclusions Only if you return or exchange; terms vary

Simple formula: mattress with selected options + delivery/setup + required base and chosen accessories + applicable taxes and fees + financing charges = your expected total if you keep the bed. Consider return charges separately as a possible additional cost, not a charge every buyer pays.

A real-world example: a Queen with an optional pillow top

Yawnder’s price guide recorded a Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Queen at $1,499 without the Cloud Pillow Top and $1,698 with it on October 25, 2026. That is a $199 option difference. These are dated catalog snapshots, not current quotes.

As an illustration, if a shopper selected the $1,698 configuration and qualified for Yawnder’s published $200 white-glove service, the subtotal would be $1,898 before tax, other purchases and financing charges. Standard shipping and delivery arrangements may differ. Check the live cart and service availability for your address; the $200 service is optional.

If that mattress were eligible for Yawnder’s trial and later approved for a refund, the posted policy calls for a $200 processing deduction per mattress. Delivery fees are non-refundable once scheduled or performed. That is a separate return scenario, not part of every purchase. Refunds, taxes, financing adjustments and eligibility depend on the order and applicable policy.

Delivery, setup and old-mattress removal

“Free shipping” can mean delivery to your door rather than carrying the bed inside, unpacking it and taking the old one away. Ask where the delivery team will leave it and whether stairs, appointments or removal change the quote.

As of October 27, 2026, Yawnder’s shipping policy lists free U.S. shipping and a $200 white-glove service per delivery, with in-home setup and like-for-like removal: one old mattress for each new mattress delivered, for example. The policy lists extra charges for certain unmatched items, including an old adjustable base removed with a mattress-only order. Confirm availability, the precise items and fees when ordering.

Check your frame before buying a new foundation

A new mattress does not automatically require a new base. Check the mattress manufacturer’s support requirements and your frame’s condition, dimensions and slat spacing. A worn or incompatible foundation can affect support and may affect warranty eligibility.

If you want an adjustable base, confirm mattress compatibility, the combined height and delivery costs. A base can be a substantial addition and is generally final sale under Yawnder’s return policy. See our foundation and slat-spacing guide.

Are mattress trial returns actually free?

Trial length is only one part of the deal. Check the minimum break-in period, return deadline, eligibility, pickup or processing deductions, limits per household, and whether delivery or accessories are refundable. A manufacturer’s direct-order trial is not automatically the trial offered by a retailer. If an eligible listing offers a discount for giving up the trial, compare the trade-off in our trial-waiver guide.

Yawnder’s policy, checked October 27, describes a 100-night mattress trial for eligible mattresses, a 30-night minimum and a $200 return and processing fee per mattress. The fee is waived for an eligible exchange to a different store mattress; any price difference applies and the replacement is final sale. The policy has household limits and exclusions, including floor models and certain products. Read the full current policy and your order terms before purchasing.

Financing: look beyond the monthly payment

Financing can make payments more manageable, but compare the total of all payments with the cash price. Review the actual offer’s APR, payment schedule, interest, fees, promotional conditions and what happens if you return the mattress. A 0% offer may be available to qualified buyers; it should not be assumed for every shopper or plan.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau notes that buy-now-pay-later terms vary and can include late fees or bank charges. Review the lender’s disclosures before accepting an offer. See Yawnder financing options for current details.

Compare two offers fairly

  1. Choose the same mattress, size, firmness and cover at both stores.
  2. Apply the actual discount and remove extras you do not want.
  3. Add shipping, setup, removal, taxes and any required foundation.
  4. Compare financing by total payments and terms, not the headline monthly number.
  5. Write down trial length, break-in, fees, exclusions and whether delivery is refundable.
  6. Save the quote and date: promotions and policies can change.

For different brands or models, compare comfort and construction as well as price. A lower checkout total is useful only if the mattress meets your needs.

Frequently asked questions

How much more than the mattress price should I budget?

There is no fixed percentage. It depends on your location, delivery, selected upgrades, foundation and payment method. Build a quote using the checklist above.

Is white-glove delivery worth it?

It may be useful if you want help carrying, unpacking and setting up the bed or removing an eligible old mattress. Compare exactly what is included and whether service is available at your address.

Does a longer trial mean a better deal?

Not necessarily. Compare fees, exclusions, minimum use periods and the refund for delivery alongside the trial length.

Does a cooling cover come with every mattress?

No. Some covers are included and others are paid upgrades. For example, Titan Plus Core lists GlacioTex as an optional selection. Check the selected configuration and price.
