How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs Fast

Confirm it is bed bugs first

Bites alone are not proof — they look like a lot of other things. Look for physical evidence: live insects about the size and colour of an apple seed, pale shed skins, tiny dark ink-dot faecal spots, and small rust-coloured smears on sheets. Check the mattress piping, the seams and underside of the box spring, the headboard, the frame joints, and the edge of carpet along the wall. A credit card run along a seam and a bright torch find more than a casual glance.

What actually kills them

• Heat. Wash bedding and clothing hot and, more importantly, tumble dry on high for at least 30 minutes — the dryer, not the wash, does the killing. Items that cannot be washed can go through the dryer alone or be bagged and heat-treated.
• Thorough vacuuming of seams, frame, baseboards and carpet edges. Empty into a sealed bag outside immediately.
• Encasements. A zippered, bed-bug-rated cover over both mattress and box spring traps anything inside and removes most of the hiding places. Leave it on for at least a year.
• Steam along seams and upholstery, applied slowly enough for the heat to penetrate.
• Professional treatment. For anything beyond a very early, very localised problem, a licensed pest control operator is the realistic path — usually two or more visits, sometimes whole-room heat treatment. Resistance to over-the-counter sprays is common, so consumer insecticides frequently disappoint.

Things that make it worse

• Throwing the mattress out early. Bed bugs live in frames, headboards and walls too, so a new mattress in an untreated room becomes infested. Treat first, replace later if you want to.
• Moving to the sofa or a spare room. That spreads the infestation instead of escaping it.
• Fogger cans. They scatter bugs deeper into walls and rarely reach where the insects hide.
• Anything involving flammable liquids or unlabelled pesticides. Only use products labelled for bed bugs and follow the label.

Containing it while you treat

Pull the bed slightly away from the wall, remove skirts and bedding that touch the floor, and keep clutter off the floor around the bed so there are fewer harbourages. Bag treated laundry and keep it sealed until the room is clear. Expect the process to take several weeks and to need a follow-up — eggs hatch on their own schedule, which is why a single treatment often is not enough.

When replacing the mattress is reasonable

If the mattress is heavily infested, damaged, or already near the end of its life, replacing it after treatment is fair enough. Wrap it in plastic before carrying it out so you are not seeding the hallway, and do not bring the new one in until the room has been treated and monitored.
