Idle Sleep Gel Plush Mattress Review

Idle Sleep Plush

Idle Sleep, an online mattress company, filed for bankruptcy in March 2023. The company cited a number of factors for its bankruptcy, including supply chain disruptions, rising costs, and increased competition.

Idle Sleep was founded in 2019 and quickly became one of the most popular online mattress brands. The company offered a variety of mattresses, including hybrid, latex, and memory foam models. Idle Sleep also offered a generous 18-month sleep trial and free shipping and returns.

However, in recent months, Idle Sleep faced a number of challenges. The company struggled to keep up with demand due to supply chain disruptions. Additionally, Idle Sleep faced rising costs for materials and shipping. Finally, the company faced increased competition from other online mattress brands.

Idle Sleep’s bankruptcy left many customers disappointed and frustrated. Some customers had not yet received their mattresses, while others were struggling to get refunds. The company’s customer service was also overwhelmed, making it difficult for customers to get help.

Idle Sleep’s bankruptcy is a reminder of the risks associated with buying mattresses online. Customers should carefully research mattress companies before making a purchase. Additionally, customers should read the terms and conditions of any sleep trial or refund policy before buying a mattress.

Here are some tips for buying a mattress online:

  • Research the company. Read reviews from other customers to get a sense of the company’s reputation and customer service.
  • Compare prices and features. There are many different mattress companies and models to choose from. Be sure to compare prices and features before making a purchase.
  • Read the fine print. Before you buy, be sure to read the terms and conditions of any sleep trial or refund policy.
  • Consider using a credit card. When you buy a mattress online, consider using a credit card. This will give you additional protection in case the company goes bankrupt or you have problems with your mattress.

The Idle Sleep Gel Plush mattress is one of the softest mattresses I ever slept on. If you’re looking for the ultimate in pressure relief, this is the mattress for you. Idle sleep is best known for providing an industry-leading 18-month trial. They also make mattresses that are incredibly affordable with great financing. If you are in the market for a soft foam mattress at a great value, you owe it to yourself to give the idle plush a try.

Overview of the Idle Plush Mattress

Here’s a video overview of the idle plush. You can see in the video that just sitting on the mattress I sink into it a good amount.

Once you order your Idle mattress, it should arrive in about a week. There may be longer delays with Covid 19 but Coronavirus aside, it will arrive fairly soon. Your mattress will come in a box like the one below.

Idle Plush Box

When you open the box you will find 2 free Idle Sleep pillows which is a great bonus since you probably need new pillows anyway if you’re buying a new mattress.

Construction of the Idle Gel Plush Mattress

Idle Gel Plush Construction

Below are the construction details as listed on the Idle website.

1″ ICE FABRIC™️ COVER AND BOUYANCY FOAM

A unique replaceable cover with gel sewn into the quilted surface, that wraps our Idle buoyancy foam. You can literally feel the freshness when you touch it. Its also made with a 500GSM+ top layer, which is why its able to provide such a luxurious feel.

1″ COOLING BUOYANCY FOAM

Where the magic happens: Our custom blended foam with gel infusion, reacts faster than memory foam and has better support for more pressure relief, all while sleeping cooler.

A NATURAL FIRE RESISTANT BARRIER

100% natural cotton barrier which is not only safer but has none of the nasty stuff like you find in other brand mattresess. No Petroleum-Based Synthetic Nylon or Polyester – Free of Carcinogenic Chemicals, Gases, Toxins, HCN, HCI, and Bromine

2″ GEL INFUSED BUOYANCY FOAM

Where the magic happens: Our custom blended foam with gel infusion, reacts faster than memory foam and has better support for more pressure relief, all while sleeping cooler.

3″ IDLE MEMORY FOAM

Unlike normal memory foam that doesn’t provide much support to where you need it most, our custom foam has greater thermal neutrality which means it goes back into shape much quicker and retains less heat.

8″ IDLE HIGH DENSITY FOAM BASE

At 8″ our bases provide superior stability for every layer. Its one reason our Idle foam gel mattresses have at least 1″ extra height compared to other brands And at 2.4lb of foam core density, this is at least 30% more than the market average, making it extra durable

FIREPROOF CLOTH

100% natural cotton barrier which is not only safer but has none of the nasty stuff like you find in other brand mattresess. No Petroleum-Based Synthetic Nylon or Polyester- Free of Carcinogenic Chemicals, Gases, Toxins, HCN, HCI, and Bromine

WASHABLE BASE COVER

A washable, durable and replaceable layer to keep your mattress clean. Just unzip at the side and its ready to be removed for cleaning.

How Long is the Idle Plush Mattress Trial Period?

Idle Sleep offers the longest trial period of any brand that I have reviewed. You get 18 months to try out the mattress in your home. That’s a year and a half or 540 days! If you for whatever reason, don’t like it after that time, it’s a free return with a full refund. The standard among online mattress brands is 100 nights, some companies upped the ante with a 1-year trial but Idle is way ahead of the pack here.

My Idle Plush Mattress Findings

This is one of the softest mattresses I have ever tried. This makes it most suitable for side sleepers or back sleepers that want maximum pressure relief. I wouldn’t recommend this mattress for stomach sleepers because it just doesn’t have enough support for your lower back when sleeping on your stomach.

Idle Plush Side Sleeping

Here you can see how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress.

Idle Sleep Sinkage

My Idle Sleep Plush Mattress Recommendation

I recommend the Idle Gel Plush to people looking for a very soft mattress. If your main concern with sleep is pressure relief, then this a great choice. One of the issues with really soft mattresses is that they are prone to trapping heat and although this is a soft foam mattress, Idle has incorporated cooling gel into the top layer to help a bit with cooling. That said, it will sleep a bit warmer than a firmer mattress simple because you will be hugged more by this mattress.

Idle Sleep has taken away any reason to give their mattresses a try. 18 months is more than enough time to see if its right for you and you get a full refund if you want to return it within that time frame. If you have tried other plush mattresses online and still are finding one that is soft enough then the Idle Plush would be my top pick for you.

Studio by Leesa Mattress Review – Great for Your Budget

IMG 20200502 163500 1

The Studio mattress is made with three layers of foam:

  • Top layer: 1.5 inches of premium memory foam that conforms to your body and provides pressure relief.
  • Middle layer: 1.5 inches of supportive foam that helps to keep your spine aligned.
  • Base layer: 7 inches of durable high-density foam that provides support and stability.

The Studio mattress also has a soft, breathable cover that is made with 100% recycled polyester.

The Studio mattress is available in a variety of sizes, including twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. It also comes with a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty.

Pros:

  • Affordable price
  • Comfortable and supportive
  • Good for all sleep positions
  • Soft, breathable cover
  • 100-night trial and 10-year warranty

Cons:

  • Some people may find the mattress to be too soft
  • The mattress can retain heat
  • There is a slight off-gassing odor when the mattress is first opened, but this usually goes away after a few days or weeks

Overall, the Leesa Studio mattress is a good choice for sleepers who are looking for an affordable, comfortable, and supportive mattress.

I recently received the new budget-friendly mattress from Leesa called Studio by Leesa. This is a 3 layer foam mattress similar to the original Leesa. What sets it apart from the original Leesa mattress which is also a 3 layer foam construction is that it does not sink in as much. Therefore it is more suited to people who want a mattress that has less contouring. As more of a side sleeper myself, I found the Leesa a little too firm for my taste but I think it a wonderful mattress for back and stomach sleepers looking for a quality mattress that is made in the USA at a great price.

Overview of the Studio by Leesa Mattress

Here is a video review of the Leesa Studio. Unlike most foam mattresses this one sprang to life and was ready to sleep on almost immediately. I did notice some off-gassing which took a few days to dissipate so if you are sensitive to smells you probably should open this in another room to let it air out for a few days. Eventually, the smell will go away and won’t be an issue.

Construction of the Studio by Leesa mattress

Below are the construction details of the mattress as listed on the Leesa website.

studio by leesa construction

Layer specs:

  • 7” foam base: Core support foam baseDensity: 1.8
  • 1.5” Pressure reliving transitional foamDensity: 2.5
  • 1.5” Contouring Memory FoamDensity: 2.5

CertiPUR-US ®-Certified

  • Made without PBDE flame retardants
  • Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy metals
  • Made without formaldehyd
  • Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission
  • Low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions for indoor air quality (< 0.5 parts per million)

How Does the Leesa Studio Compare to the Original Leesa Mattress?

Since both the Leesa and Leesa Studio are 3 layer foam mattresses, it’s easy to compare. I appreciate that Leesa includes the foam density of each layer. As you can see below, the Leesa Original has denser foam at the top and transitional layers which will make it more durable and provide better pressure relief. The Leesa studio has a half in less comfort and transitional foam and makes up the height with an extra inch in the base layer. This is how they have saved on cost and it does make for a different feel.

My Studio by Leesa Findings

As you can see below, this mattress doesn’t have all that much sink to it but since it is all foam, it didn’t feel overly firm either. For reference, this is a 14 lb. bowling ball.

studio by leesa sink

Here you can see that I’m not sinking in all that much while on my side. My shoulders give in a bit but my hips don’t sink much at all. Some sleepers really appreciate this and I would advise having a pillow thick enough to make up for the lack of sinkage at your shoulders.

side sleeping studio by leesa

If you sleep on your back or stomach, this mattress is a good choice. As you can see I’m fully supported.

back sleeping studio by leesa

My Studio By Leesa Recommendation

All too often I will find a mattress that is really good value and then the company will gradually increase the price as they get name recognition in the industry. That shouldn’t be the case with this mattress as Leesa is a well established online brand and they intentionally designed a mattress that has inherent value at an aggressive price that won’t compete with the original model.  I highly recommend this mattress to back and stomach sleepers looking for a mattress with no motion transfer that may be new to sleeping on foam. It won’t break the bank and it’s relatively light so won’t break your back either if you have to move it down the road. The Studio by Leesa comes with a 100-night trial and 10-year warranty. That means free delivery, free returns and a full refund if you don’t like it. On top of that Leesa donates a new mattress to a child in need for every 10 that they sell. There are hundreds of 3 layer foam mattresses on the market these days and it’s nice to know that you are doing a little bit of good while making your purchase.

Nectar Lush Mattress Review : How Soft is It?

Nectar Lush Mattress Review

Update: The Nectar Lush has been discontinued. Check out our updated Nectar Mattress Review here.

The Nectar mattress is one of the most popular and highly rated online mattress brands. It gets top marks among all the best mattress review sites because it is so accomodating to different types of sleepers and is a great value especially if you factor in their 365-night trial and Forever Warranty. But what if you crave a mattress that is super soft and cradles you to offer the ultimate in pressure relief? That’s where the Nectar Lush comes in. I received a free queen size Nectar Lush for review to see for myself how it compares. This mattress is designed to give you a feeling like you are being hugged and cradled. Other brands now have a luxury offering but it may not always be the upgrade you think it is. In this review we look at the benefits of the Nectar Lush and who should consider it for purchasing.

Overview of the Nectar Lush

Here’s a video overview of the Nectar Lush. It’s much easier to watch this video and see for yourself how the mattress reacts to get a good sense of how it will feel.

How Much Does the Nectar Lush Cost?

Below are the prices of the Nectar Lush. It is certainly more than the original Nectar but still a good value.

[table id=109 /]

Construction of the Nectar Lush Mattress

There isn’t a whole lot of detail on the densities of foam used in each later but from what I could tell it is quality foam.

Nectar Lush Construction

Dual-action cooling

With a cooling cover and a gel-coated memory foam top layer, the Nectar Lush helps regulate temperature to stay cool and in a deep sleep.

Superior Pressure Support

The Nectar Lush features an innovative memory foam with a higher density than what is found in traditional foam products. The increased density helps provide superior pressure relief for a plush, floaty rest.

My Nectar Lush Findings

The Nectar Lush comes shipped in a box that is a bit bigger than the original Nectar box because it is a thicker mattress, coming in a 12 inches vs the 10-inch original.

Nectar Lush Box

I thought that this mattress would take longer to come to shape because it is softer than the original and there’s just more foam that needs to decompress, but that wasn’t really the case. I was able to lay on this mattress about 45 minutes after opening it. Yes, there was some off-gassing but not as much as I would expect with an all-foam mattress. Keep in mind that you may notice more off-gassing than me because everyone has different sensitivities but even so, I would expect most of the off-gassing to dissipate within 24 hours.

Nectar Lush Squish

Here you can see how easy it sinks down into the mattress. You will notice the pressure relief right away. It will also be slower to recover but since it does contour so well, you won’t be moving around much anyway.

nectar lush top squish

There isn’t as much edge support on this mattress as a typical spring mattress but I didn’t feel like I was going to roll off either. A lot of people ask me about edge support because they put their shoes on at the side of the bed. I’m not sure why that’s such a big concern since your bed is primarily used for sleeping but nevertheless it is a concern I hear more than I would have expected. So although you may not enjoy putting your shoes on with this mattress, the trade-off is that it sleeps well.

nectar lush side sit

Here’s a picture of me lying on my side. You can easily see how this mattress contours.

nectar side sleep

Here’s you can see me lying on my back. This mattress is great for back sleeping too.

Nectar back sleeping

I didn’t really like sleeping on my stomach on this mattress. I would go with the original Nectar instead if you are a dedicated stomach sleeper.

Nectar stomach sleeping

My Final Thoughts on the Nectar Lush

Shopping for a new mattress is more confusing than ever. There are hundreds of online brands to choose from, not to mention the hundreds of brands available in stores. However, Nectar has made a name for itself as a brand that consumers and reviewers choose. Not only because it feels great but you also have an industry-leading 365-night trial and a 10-year warranty. I recommend the Nectar Lush for people that know they like the feel of memory foam and want a softer mattress that is great at relieving pressure points. Side sleepers will reap the most benefit from this mattress followed by back sleepers. Stomach sleepers should take a look at the original Nectar instead.

Mend Sleep Mattress Review

Mend Mattress Review

The Mend mattress is a hybrid, foam and spring mattress created by a husband and wife from Charleston, South Carolina. This mattress was designed to provide superior pressure relief while still maintaining adequate edge support. Unlike most online brands, Mend does not have a trial period. Instead, they give you the option to swap out the top layer for something firmer or softer depending on your preferences. I found this mattress to be soft right out of the box so chances are if you don’t like a soft mattress, you will want to opt for a firmer setting.

Overview of the Mend Mattress

Below is a video overview of the Mend Sleep mattress. You’ll notice that the top cover has a separate zipper that houses the foam layers making it easy to swap out and exchange. You can also flip the foam layer over for a different feel.

Construction of the Mend Sleep Mattress

construction

Below are the construction details as listed on their website:

4-inch Comfort Layer™ – comprised of two unique foams, when paired, provide pillow-like softness and custom support.

8-inch hybrid foam-spring core – with almost 1,000 springs per mattress (king), these individually wrapped coils respond to your unique body shape to offer intuitive support and relief. The springs are surrounded by two layers of support foam, engineered to provide long-lasting resilience.

My Mend Sleep Findings

Here you can see just how much this mattress sinks. With 4 inches of foam at the top layer, you really do get a pillow top feel.

squish

Here’s another shot with showing sinkage with my 14 lb. bowling ball.

sink

I found this mattress super comfortable while sleeping on my side. I have broad shoulders and the mattress sank enough so that I felt great pressure relief with my shoulder and hips.

elbow

Here you can see that I am balanced out well. I could probably use a thicker pillow but my shoulders felt great.

contour

A big reason for the creation of this mattress is that the founders felt that most of the competition did not offer adequate edge support. While that’s probably true for some of the all-foam mattresses, having a zoned coil system like the one found in the Mend mattress does the job well. You will still sink into the mattress at the edge but will notice more support around the perimeter because of the firmer coils at the edge.

shoes

Here you can see the zipper system. This probably was an added cost but well worth it, especially if they will be working with you on comfort exchanges.

zipper

Below I unzipped the cover to expose the comfort foam layer. You can see to separate colors each a different firmness. That said, each layer is still relatively soft.

foam

My Mend Sleep Recommendation

I think the Mend Sleep mattress is ideal for side sleepers that aren’t getting adequate pressure relief from their current mattress and want a softer feel. While you can swap out the layers for something firmer, I found the out of the box firmness to be on the softer side. It seems that Mend was aiming for more of a pillow top, luxury feel with their mattress. Since a queen retails for $,1,650 it is a bit on the pricier end of the spectrum compared to other hybrids online but if you are looking for lots of pressure relief while still getting support from a quality spring system, this mattress is worth a look.

Brooklyn Bedding has really expanded their offering of mattresses this past year and their latest mattress, the Propel is a strong showing. Here’s a quick video overview of the Propel mattress from unboxing to giving a try for the first time. You would be hard-pressed to know there are springs in this mattress if you didn’t know they were already in there.

 Construction of the Propel Mattress

Propel mattress construction

Below are the construction details from the Propel website.

1. Upcycle Performance Cover

An elite, European performance fabric utilizes Upcycle technology with encapsulated minerals to transform your body’s heat into restorative energy.

2. 1.5″ CopperFlex with Titan Cool

A layer of patented copperflex is paired with TitanCool, a phase change molecule surface infusion with high conductivity properties that draws excess heat away from the body, maintaining optimal comfort for each individual sleeper. An added infusion of copper helps promote an antibacterial sleep environment.

An engineered layer consisting of up to 952 individually encased coils, allows for better reactivity and motion isolation, minimizing sleep disturbance.

6. 1″ Base Support Foam

A high-density foam base adds durability to the mattress while reinforcing individually encased coils as they compress.

How Much Does the Propel Mattress Cost?

Here are the current prices of the mattress before applying the 20% automatic discount.

[table id=86 /]

My Propel Mattress Findings

The propel feels more like a foam mattress than a spring mattress even though it is a hybrid with a base layer of pocket coils. I think this is because there is 3 inches of foam above the coil system along with a base layer of foam to absorb motion at both ends.

Here you can see how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress. It provides good contouring and I would rate this a true medium feel.

Propel Mattress Sinkage

Sinkage 2

The mattress has decent edge support so you can maximize use of the entire mattress.

propel squish

My Propel Mattress Recommendation

I recommend the propel mattress to people who are looking for optimal recovery at night. The Upcycle fabric is designed to turn body heat into FAR Infrared energy to promote recovery and circulation. The foams underneath provide great pressure relief and breathability which will reduce your need to change positions at night. Finally, the spring layer will make it just a bit easier to change positions and provides added contouring that foam alone just can’t provide.

Best Waterbed Mattress of 2019

Best Waterbeds 1

Waterbeds have been around for centuries, going back as far as 3600 BC, when Persians filled mattresses made of goatskin with water. In the 19th century, hospitals used waterbeds made of rubber for patients. Best Place to Buy Mattress Online

Best place to buy a mattress

If the thought to buy mattress online seems frightening, you’re not alone. With the enormous numbers of mattress manufacturers offering a mind boggling variety of options, it can sure be confusing to find the right pick. The online mattress industry is growing with leaps and bounds, with several new companies coming into the business and adding to the zillion options already available. Each company tries to come up with an innovative technology that will make them stand out from the rest and attract customers. The competition is only getting high in the mattress industry, and while that means more options for those looking for a quality mattress, it’s also a lot more time-consuming to browse through the overwhelming number of options and find the right one.

The online mattress industry is already at $20+billion, with newer companies constantly coming in. There are several companies that are already many years old, and there are brands that are new in the business. All of them claim to be better than everyone else, making a choice even harder for customers.

You are going to find a wider variety of mattresses online than anywhere else. Even though there are a lot of options to sort through, there are several definite advantages of buying a mattress online.

Advantages of Buying Mattress Online

Even until a few years ago, mattress shopping used to be a time-consuming task. With online retailers not as abundant, the only option was to travel from one store to another, trying to find a suitable bed. Once you found the right one, it was your job to transport the mattress, unload it and unbox it. The whole process was so tedious that people put off buying a new mattress until their bed was falling apart.

With online shopping, the process of buying a mattress is a breeze. You can sit at the office and place your order for a new mattress, and have it delivered to your house in a matter of days. In fact, online retailing is so popular today that brick and mortar stores are also offering their products online. After all, when you have more convenience online, why bother traveling to brick and mortar stores to check out mattresses?

More Options When you Purchase Mattress Online

It can never be doubted that there are far more options online that you will ever get to see at a showroom. Online retailers have no showroom. Once you choose a mattress from the online listing, they either make one for you or ship one to you from their warehouse. Thousands of mattresses are available at just a touch or a click, without the need to spend days dropping into several different stores. Whether you want a twin or a queen, memory foam or natural latex, under $500 or a luxury mattress, there’s everything available online. And the best thing is, you can browse, shop around and purchase without wasting precious time.

The convenience of Buying Mattress Online

Mattresses are heavy, and if you don’t have the strength or the right vehicle, it can be a nightmare to bring a mattress home. When you shop online, the mattress is delivered to your doorstep and sometimes even unboxed and installed for you. The customer doesn’t have to load and unload the mattress or worry about having it shipped home. That’s the convenience you enjoy only with online shopping.

Compare Prices of Mattresses Online

If you had to compare prices of mattresses from two different showrooms you would have to visit the showrooms, get quotes, come home and device and then go again to make a purchase. With online shopping, you can compare prices of different products and brands without having to go anywhere. Simply visit the websites of each mattress company and see their prices. It’s that easy. When you find the most affordable option, you can make a purchase.

Sleep Trial of Online Mattress Companies

Online mattress companies offer something that no brick and mortar showroom ever does– free sleep trial. That means you sleep on the mattress during the trial period to find out if it suits you. If it does, you keep it. If it doesn’t, you can return it within the trial period and get a full refund. And that’s not all. It’s the company’s job to pick up the mattress just the way it got delivered to you. That’s not something that you get when you buy a mattress from a showroom.

Best Places to Buy Mattress Online

When it comes to online mattress shopping, you can always buy one from Amazon. But when you buy a branded mattress from a third-party site, you lose out on perks like free shipping, sleep trial, and warranty. These are available only when you purchase the mattress directly from the retailer.

Now that we know the benefits of buying a mattress online let’s look at the top websites where you could head for your next purchase.

Can You Remove Mattress Tags?

Can you remove mattress tags

A mattress is not something you need to buy every six months, but when you do, it can be quite an experience. For first-timers, buying a mattress can seem like a hassle because of the different options available and the different price points. Do you buy foam or innerspring? Do you buy a regular mattress or a luxury bed, and what exactly is the difference between the two? Should you try a mattress before purchase or choose the more convenient option of online shopping?

It isn’t surprising that a lot of people end up with the wrong mattress thanks to the confusion created by the variety of products. We don’t always pay attention to it, but a mattress is crucial to our sleep quality. Therefore, choosing a reputed brand and quality materials are important in order to ensure that you pick the right bed.

But when you bring home your new mattress, you might be baffled by a small tag on one side that is supposedly illegal to remove. Really? A mattress tag is illegal to remove?! However, upon closer look, you will discover something entirely different. Let’s find that out.

What Are Mattress Tags?

Almost everything that you buy comes with some kind of a label. This is where all the important information about the product is provided, such as the brand, the size, the material, and care instructions. From clothing to bedding to cosmetics to household goods, almost all commodities come with tags. Not surprisingly mattresses also come with such a tag. This is where the manufacturer, the material, the place of manufacture, and care instructions are listed. But, besides that, something else is also written on this mattress tag: “Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law.”

Seeing a label like this on a mattress (or on any commodity) can be amusing, and also a laughing matter. Why on earth would the law care about what people did with mattress tags? Doesn’t the law have enough to deal with already?

If you want to remove the tag for whatever reason, the fear of legal action can prevent you from doing so. But really, how would anybody find out if you had removed the tag from your mattress? The last time we checked, the police did not perform routine inspections on households to find out if they had removed the tag from the mattress. The police have more important things to do.

If the “Do not remove under penalty of law” tag on your mattress has ever puzzled you, it’s time you looked closer. There are three little words to dispel your fear: “except by consumer.”

What Is This All About?

That little tag on the mattress is for the consumer’s safety, but the warning is for the seller. The consumer is not only allowed to cut off the tag, but they can also cut open an entire mattress and do whatever they want to with it. No one from the law is ever going to be concerned with it. However, if you are a manufacturer or seller, then you should take the tag very seriously because removing it (or not putting it there at all) can land you in trouble.

The tag is put in place to assure customers that they are buying a new, never-used mattress that’s been made of quality, safe, and hygienic materials. If there is no tag on a mattress, it has a questionable origin. Although there is an interesting story behind how the tag came into existence, its purpose is to inform consumers about the quality of the product they are purchasing and if it is safe for use.

A mattress is something that you sleep on every night. It comes into direct contact with your skin and breath. That is the reason why should be as safe and hygienic possible. You wouldn’t want to find out later that the mattress you’ve been sleeping on is actually stuffed with discarded hospital bedding. Filthy, right? That’s exactly the reason why the mattress tag came to exist.

The Story Behind the Tag

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the modern mattresses we get now did not exist. Mattresses were very basic items, something that people did not put much thought into during purchase. This gave manufacturers a free run and made government officials very concerned about the safety of materials that were used to stuff mattresses. In order to cut costs, manufacturers went as far as to recycle old and used bedding to make “new” mattresses. As a result, the new mattresses weren’t really new or never-used. They were full of bacteria and posed health risks to users.

The fear was greater about bedding from hospitals being used to stuff new mattresses. The indiscriminate use of discarded hospital bedding items was spreading infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and smallpox.

The tag was put into place for ending these unsanitary practices. Initially the tag was meant to list all the materials that were used to stuff the mattress. But later, to make sure that manufacturers or sellers did not remove the tag, the legal warning was added.

However, confusion arose among consumers about what to do with the tag. To clear things up, the words “except by consumer” were added later to the warning.

Penalties for No-Tag Mattresses

If you ever find a mattress that is being sold without this tag, it’s either a fake product or it’s stuffed with questionable materials. That’s not all. You can report the manufacturer selling mattresses without the tag. The penalty can range from a legal notice served to the manufacturer or seller to stop removing the tags or provide the correct information, to a fine of up to $1,000. Although this is a federal law, the design of the label and the information that it lists are decided by each state. If a mattress is recycled, then every material used for the stuffing should be listed on the tag. This ensures that consumers receive a product that’s safe and hygienic.

Hästens Vividus Review

Hastens Bed Review

History of Hastens Mattress

Once upon a time, nestled in the lush green meadows of Sweden, a tale of luxury, comfort, and dreams took root. In the year 1852, a skilled artisan named Pehr Adolf Janson embarked on an ambitious journey. He sought to craft the most opulent sleep experience known to mankind, harnessing the essence of nature and blending it with unparalleled craftsmanship. And thus, Hästens, the world-renowned mattress brand, was born.

The early days of Hästens were marked by an unwavering dedication to quality. Janson, a saddlemaker by trade, carefully selected the finest natural materials for his creations: horsehair, cotton, and wool. The secret to Hästens’ inimitable softness and support lay in the horsehair, which offered remarkable breathability, temperature regulation, and durability. This unique blend of natural fibers became the hallmark of Hästens mattresses, setting them apart from all others.

As the years went by, Hästens continued to evolve, embracing innovation and enhancing its expertise. In 1924, the brand adopted the distinctive blue and white checkered pattern, inspired by the Swedish flag. This timeless design became synonymous with Hästens’ commitment to quality and elegance, a subtle reminder of the brand’s proud heritage.

The year 1952 marked a significant milestone for Hästens, as the brand introduced its first-ever pocket spring mattress. This groundbreaking innovation, a fusion of old-world craftsmanship and modern technology, allowed the company to offer unparalleled comfort and support to its discerning customers. The pocket springs, meticulously layered within the mattress, allowed for a sleep surface that adapted to the sleeper’s every movement, cradling the body in a cocoon of luxurious rest.

Over the years, Hästens continued to refine its craftsmanship, creating mattresses that were nothing short of works of art. The brand’s master artisans, the modern-day descendants of Pehr Adolf Janson, devoted hundreds of hours to handcrafting each mattress, ensuring that every stitch, every tuft, and every layer was perfect. The result was a sleep experience that transcended the ordinary, transporting the sleeper to a realm of blissful slumber.

Today, Hästens is synonymous with the pinnacle of luxury and comfort, gracing the homes of royalty, celebrities, and discerning sleep connoisseurs the world over. The brand’s commitment to excellence remains unwavering, as does its dedication to sustainability and the preservation of nature. Hästens believes that the most exquisite sleep experience can only be achieved by respecting the earth and its resources.

And so, the tale of Hästens continues, as the brand journeys forth into the world of dreams. Its legacy lives on in the hearts of those who have experienced the sublime embrace of a Hästens mattress, a testament to the enduring power of craftsmanship, innovation, and a love for the finest things in life.

There’s been a recent spurt of health and wellness focused items in various industries. From organic food to natural skincare products to environment-friendly cookware, health and wellness have become an entire industry in itself, and consumers are also hooked. Everyone wants to be healthy, eating right and sleeping well. And these health and wellness products aim to make this easier for consumers. A case in point is the sleep industry. Even till a decade ago, no one could predict that this nightly phenomenon that all of us go through could become a whole market in itself. But today this is a reality, with hundreds of products claiming to improve sleep quality and keep away sleep disorders.

From luxury mattresses to sleep-related gadgets like light alarm clocks and sound machines, there is an endless list of products to splurge on. But have you ever considered splurging more than $100,000 on a bed?

No, we aren’t kidding. If you thought that your $3,000 bed was the most expensive it could get, you are making a huge mistake. There is a mattress – probably the only one in the world right now – that’s close to $150,000 and has the world in awe. It’s possibly the most luxurious bed that’s fit for a queen and is still touted as worth the money. Why? Let’s find out.

Hästens Vividus – What Is It?

As you probably have already guessed from the name, this is a Swedish luxury bed. But the question is, with thousands of luxury beds available today, what exactly sets it apart, aside from the price tag?

The Hästens Vividus bed isn’t something consumers would buy at the drop of a hat. It’s for those who not only have that kind of money to spend but also the lifestyle to fit it in. It’s a custom, continental bed that’s crafted to perfection by four master artisans at the Hästens workshop in Sweden’s Köping. You pay $149,000 for a pinewood frame and steel springs, with layers of horsetail hair, flax, wool, and cotton batting. If that reminds you of mattresses made in the early centuries, you are right. Hästens specializes in making beds that are entirely handcrafted with pure, natural materials, just like the mattresses of yore.

The Hästens Vividus could well be the bed that Queen Victoria slept on. And it has absolutely no competitors in the mattress industry. None at all. Of course, for that price, you get several other things, such as the finest diamond necklace from Tiffany or a Mercedes AMG GT S. If you choose to buy this bed instead, read on to learn more about its features.

Quality and Features

The Hästens bedding company has been around since 1852, and their motto has always been “The Spirit of Excellence.” We wonder if it can get any more excellent than this entirely handcrafted bed made of all-natural materials. In a market where latex and foam are the key materials, the mention of horsetail hair and flax certainly makes you take notice.

Hästens has a number of showrooms around the world, including the US, and every interested customer is encouraged to visit a store to check out the product before shelling out the massive sum.

But you may wonder the advantage of horse hair and flax in a mattress when the market is flooded with things like gel memory foam, air-engineering, and open cell technology. Hästens has been in the bedding industry much before latex or memory foam came into existence. In those times natural materials were used to make mattresses. Even though today these materials seem very outdated, back in those days they made some of the finest beds. This Swedish company sticks to the tradition and continues to make all-natural handmade beds. In fact, a story goes that’s the Swedish royal family was so impressed with the craftsmanship of Hästens that the company was named the Official Bedding Supplier to the Swedish Royal Court. This was over 65 years ago.

There is no doubt that the Swedes are incredible at the craftsmanship. From knives to cutlery to furniture to bedding, anything manufactured in Sweden becomes a collector’s piece. The same applies to the Hästens Vividus. Every bed is made to order and customized according to preferences. Although there are beds on display at their showrooms, Hästens takes care to specially craft a bed for you once you place an order. This makes every bed unique.

There are several benefits of an all-natural bed. Horse tail hair is a natural temperature regulator, absorbing moisture as the bed heats when you sleep and releasing it the moisture as the bed cools when you get out of it. Flax has antibacterial properties, making the mattress hygienic and safe. Flax is also used to make linen fibers. Cotton is excellent at wicking moisture and helping you stay cool, while wool keeps you warm in the colder months.

Sure, you don’t get the bounce of memory foam, but you do get a bed that’s 100 percent natural, free from chemicals, and has been made just for you by master craftsmen in faraway Sweden. Besides, Hästens has researched a good deal about the science of sleep and makes sure that their beds help customers get the best sleep ever.

So Why Hästens Vividus So Expensive?

This is where the fun begins. When you first see the Hästens Vividus bed up close, it can slightly anger you: why is something that looks so ordinary priced $149,000? It doesn’t look anything like those technology-driven mattresses that are the rage today. It doesn’t look like a cloud, and it doesn’t promise to feel as soft either. It doesn’t have any built-in gadget– no phone charger, no smartphone app, no television or refrigerator. Then why on Earth is it so expensive?

To understand this, we need to know the history of the Vividus. When the bed was first made in 2006, it used to take 160 hours to build and was priced at $112,900. In the next 10 years, the company researched more about regulating body temperature and offering more comfort and support without using any artificial material. They did manage to make the Vividus better, but it only started to take double the time– 320 hours. That’s because Hästens has only four certified craftsmen and only one atelier in Sweden. Each bed is made to order and requires at least 10 weeks to build.

Next, come the materials. The frame is made from Swedish pine wood that’s slow-growing and not abundant. Needless to say, Swedish pine wood is expensive and not easily available. Next in line is the box spring, which has steel springs as well as several layers of flax used to soundproof the bed. On top of that sits the mattress, made with more springs, and multiple layers of horsetail hair lining and cotton and wool batting, layered just the way you would bake a cake or lasagna. The topmost layer is the mattress pad, called the “topper,” made with many more layers of wool, cotton, and horsehair.

Horsehair is one of the most critical components of the bed and also requires the most effort and time. The hair is hand braided and then unwound, to make it bouncy. Once the strands of horsehair are curled, they function like springs, giving the bed bounce and support. Unlike human hair, horsehair is hollow and excellent at wicking away moisture to prevent sweat buildup.

Because all these materials are natural and cannot be manufactured in a factory, they are hard to obtain and also expensive. There are no screws and nails in the bed, only dovetail joints. The step-stitching is done by hand with an 18-inch-long needle.

However, the advantage is that when you lie on the bed, you not only feel supported overall but also have your legs slightly elevated, which is beneficial for blood circulation.

Besides the customized comfort, you also get a 25-year warranty, and a bed that’s fit to be passed down to next generations.

Is Hästens Vividus Worth It?

It was recently reported that Drake now sleeps on a Hastens mattress. His is custom made, costs $395,000, took over 600 hours to make and weighs roughly one ton.

Drake BedIf you have the money and want to splurge not on diamonds or gold watches but on sleep, then the Hästens Vividus is for you. You don’t easily find such beds. Free from chemicals and artificial materials, the Vividus is crafted for the most blissful and most hygienic sleep.

You don’t necessarily have to lie on a $150,000 mattress for the most restful sleep. If you have a sleep disorder, then a mattress isn’t going to cure it. However, if you do want to invest in the most luxurious sleep, it doesn’t get any better than the Hästens Vividus.

If you want the poor person’s Hasten’s mattress, check out the Brentwood Home Oceano. It’s less than 1% of the price and you aren’t compromising much except bragging rights.

Amerisleep has a straightforward system for naming their mattresses:

  • AS + Number: The models are named “AS” followed by a number, ranging from 1 to 5.
  • Firmness Scale: The number directly corresponds to firmness, where AS1 is the firmest and AS5 is the softest.

This simple system makes it easy for customers to understand the main difference between the models and choose based on their firmness preference:

  • AS1 and AS2: Best for strict stomach and back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel.
  • AS3: The most popular choice, its medium-firm feel suits side, back, and combination sleepers.
  • AS4 and AS5: Ideal for side sleepers and those who love a plush, pressure-relieving feel.

The Amerisleep AS3 is one of the most popular models by Amerisleep. This mattress has a medium feel that contours very well but still offers enough support for stomach and back sleepers. What sets Amerisleep mattresses apart from most of the competition is that all their models come with Celliant® technology infused into the cover. Celliant® is a proprietary mix of 13 thermo-reactive minerals that are embedded into polyester fibers. This fiber absorbs body heat and recycles it into infrared energy. The benefit of this technology is increased circulation, which leads to better sleep and recovery.

The medium firmness of the AS3 makes it ideal for most sleep positions and body types. Side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers are sure to find comfort with this bed. Amerisleep has also released the AS3 in a hybrid version. The AS3h hybrid offers the same responsive and soft Bio-Pur® comfort layer, but the base of the hybrid is individually wrapped innerspring coils that are zoned for targeted support. The hybrid is a great option for those that want the contouring effect of memory foam, but also like the bounce that comes with an innerspring bed.

Now, let’s look at the details of the Amerisleep AS3 and jump into my review!

Overview of the Amerisleep AS3

Finally, this is what it looks like a few minutes after opening it. As you can see it is already at full shape.

Amerisleep AS3Here’s a video overview of the AS3. This mattress recovers quickly out of the box and had little off-gassing smell. This mattress comes with a standard 100-night trial with free shipping and free returns.

Construction of the Amerisleep AS3

Below are the construction details as listed on their website.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE CELLIANT® COVER

Celliant® is an advanced fabric made with 13 thermoreactive minerals that helps improve the performance of the mattress.

EXTRA-BREATHABLE COOLING LAYER

Our Bio-Pur™ foam is five times more breathable than traditional memory foam, because of it’s advanced open-cell structure. It wicks away heat while you sleep and can help keep you cool and comfortable.

“FEELS-LIKE-YOU’RE-FLOATING” LAYER

The affinity transition layer is soft and responsive. It reacts to your body position to evenly support your weight and can help relieve pressure points, so it feels as if you’re weightlessly resting on a cloud.

SAG-FREE & ECO-FRIENDLY SUPPORT

Our Bio-Core™ foam support layer won’t sag even after decades of use. And, like our Bio-Pur™ foam, it’s partially made from plants instead of petroleum so it’s eco-friendly.

Below are the prices of the mattress as of this writing.

My Amerisleep AS3 Findings

amerisleep as3 sinkage

Here’s another view from the side of the mattress.

as3 side

It’s a minor detail but in my mind, it matters. The zipper system on this mattress is high quality. It’s easy to unzip and the zipper is actually in the middle so you don’t have to lift up the mattress to access it.

as3 zipper

Here’s a picture of the layers of the mattress. Below the blue cover that you see above, there is a fire sock. I removed part of the fire sock to show you these layers. Again, these are cut clean. Some mattresses I have opened are warped towards the corners and don’t fully recover due to the use of too much glue.

Amerisleep uses a plant-based foam in their mattresses to lessen the environmental impact. I’m not sure the exact ratio but it is certainly nice to learn that they are trying to move the needle in the right direction. The foam is an open-cell foam which means more breathability too. This mattress feels amazing and is breathable for an all foam mattress.

as3 layers

Here’s a clip showing motion transfer on the mattress which is basically none because it is a foam mattress.

Here’s a video showing the inside layers of the AS3 and how each reacts. The top layer is a little slower to recover because it provides the most contouring and pressure relief. The recovery is faster than most dense foam mattresses but not quite as fast of a recovery as something like an Avena foam. Basically, you won’t get that stuck feeling and the mattress is really easy to move around on.

My Amerisleep AS3 Recommendation

Amerisleep has a relatively long history in the online mattress space. The fact that they have retail stores in Arizona, Oregon, Texas, and Colorado is a good indicator that they stand by their product. Their 20-year warranty and 100-night sleep trial period also suggest that they are confident you will be impressed with this mattress once you try it. With Amerisleep, you get a company with more than 15,000 positive reviews, a long business history (at least in online mattress brand terms), the ability to try before you buy, and all the benefits of Bio-Pur®, HIVE®, and Celliant® technology.

I particularly recommend the AS3 to sleepers that change positions at night. It rates a true medium on a firmness scale from 1 to 10. Since a medium firmness is suited to most sleep positions, this mattress is very versatile and should be comfortable for all sleepers.

Learn more about the Amerisleep AS3

Off-gassing for the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid can vary slightly, but here’s what you can expect:

  • Initial Off-Gassing: Most reviewers and test sites report a noticeable “new mattress” smell when first unboxing the AS3 Hybrid. This smell is due to the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the production of foam and other materials.
  • Duration: The most noticeable off-gassing typically dissipates within the first 2-3 days. However, a faint odor may linger for up to a week or slightly longer in some cases.
  • Amerisleep’s Recommendation: Amerisleep themselves state that you might notice a smell for up to 4 days.

Tips for Minimizing Off-Gassing:

  • Airing out: Unpack the mattress in a well-ventilated room. Open windows and run a fan if possible.
  • Time: Leave it to air out for a few days or even a week before adding sheets and sleeping on it.

Important Note: Off-gassing is common with new mattresses, especially those containing foam layers. Amerisleep uses plant-based foams and CertiPUR-US® certified materials, which means they meet strict standards for low VOC emissions.

While the core design of the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid has stayed mostly consistent, there have been a few subtle changes worth noting:

  • Name Change: The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid was originally launched under the name “Liberty.” In 2017, Amerisleep simplified their naming system–the AS3’s medium-firm feel fits right in the middle of their numbered scale.
  • Minor Material Updates: Over time, it’s possible that Amerisleep has made slight modifications to the foams or the coil system used in the AS3 Hybrid. These changes would likely be aimed at improving durability, performance, or keeping costs in line. Companies rarely publicize these minor tweaks.
  • Focus on Bio-Pur® Foam: Amerisleep’s marketing has increasingly emphasized their plant-based Bio-Pur® foam. While the AS3 likely always had some degree of this material, they now highlight its benefits in terms of responsiveness and eco-friendliness.

Overall, the evolution of the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid has been about refinement and branding rather than significant overhauls. The core appeal of a medium-firm hybrid mattress with good pressure relief remains at its heart.

AS3 Weight Limit

The official weight limit for the Amerisleep AS3 (and the entire Amerisleep lineup) is 800 lbs for a Queen size mattress. This applies to the total combined weight on the mattress.

It’s important to note:

  • Weight limits are guidelines: While manufacturers test their mattresses for durability, exceeding the weight limit doesn’t mean instant failure. It indicates a higher potential for wear and tear and may void warranty coverage.
  • Needs over limits: If you or your partner are close to or exceed the individual weight recommendations (roughly 400 lbs per person), consider a mattress with a more robust construction specifically designed for heavier individuals—firmer and thicker mattresses are generally better options.

AS3 Weight Limit

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is generally considered a medium-firm mattress, ranking around a 6 or 6.5 on the firmness scale where 1 is incredibly soft and 10 is extremely firm.

Here’s why it’s considered medium-firm:

  • The industry standard for medium-firm is 6.5. The AS3 Hybrid is slightly softer than this benchmark.
  • Comfort layer balance: It features a soft Bio-Pur® foam comfort layer that provides cushioning, plus supportive layers underneath to prevent excessive sinkage.
  • Suits most sleepers: This balanced comfort works well for the majority of people across sleeping positions (side, back, stomach).

Please note: Firmness perception is somewhat subjective. If you’re usually very sensitive to firmness, or on the extremes of the weight spectrum (petite or heavier individuals), your experience might differ slightly.

AS3 Pressure Relief

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid rates very well in terms of pressure relief, especially for side sleepers and those with moderate back pain. Here’s why:

  • Bio-Pur® Foam: Amerisleep’s proprietary plant-based memory foam is known for its responsiveness and pressure-relieving properties. It gently contours to your body, relieving pressure points at the shoulders, hips, and spine.
  • Hybrid Construction: The combination of memory foam with the supportive coil layer helps maintain spinal alignment, a key factor in reducing pressure build-up.
  • Medium-Firm Feel: The AS3’s medium-firmness provides a balance of contouring and support. This ensures you don’t sink in excessively, which can misalign your spine and worsen pressure issues.

Who benefits most:

  • Side sleepers: The AS3 Hybrid’s cushioning and contouring are ideal for side sleepers, reducing pressure on the hips and shoulders.
  • People with back pain: The support and spinal alignment promoted by the AS3 Hybrid may alleviate back pain.
  • Average weight individuals: The firmness level is generally most comfortable and pressure-relieving for people of average weight.

Points to Consider

  • Strictly stomach sleepers: May find a slightly firmer mattress more supportive.
  • Heavier individuals: Might benefit from a mattress specifically designed for heavier bodies for optimal support and pressure relief.

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is generally considered a good mattress for sex due to a few key features:

  • Bounce: The AS3 Hybrid has a moderate level of bounce, thanks to the combination of memory foam and pocketed coils. This bounce allows for easier movement and position changes during intimacy.
  • Responsiveness: The Bio-Pur® memory foam used in the AS3 Hybrid is relatively responsive, meaning it recovers quickly after pressure is applied. This can be beneficial for sex compared to some memory foam mattresses that cause a sinking feeling.
  • Edge Support: The AS3 Hybrid is known to have good edge support, which means the mattress won’t sag significantly when you use the entire surface area. This is important for maneuverability and feeling secure during sex.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Personal preference: While bounce and responsiveness are important factors, some couples may prefer a softer or firmer feel for sex.
  • Noise: Innerspring mattresses, like the AS3 Hybrid, can potentially make noise when compressed or moved on. This may not be a concern for everyone, but it’s worth considering.

Overall Rating:

Based on user reviews and its features, the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid scores high for sex due to its bounce, responsiveness, and edge support. However, remember that mattress preference for intimacy can be subjective.

Here’s a breakdown of how the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid compares to other mattresses on factors you mentioned:

Cooling:

  • Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid: Performs well in cooling thanks to its Bio-Pur® foam’s open-cell structure and pocketed coils that allow for airflow.
  • Similar Options: Saatva Classic and WinkBed also use a combination of breathable materials and coils for good cooling. Leesa Sapira Hybrid might also be a good option.

Motion Transfer:

  • Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid: Very good at isolating motion due to the memory foam layer absorbing movement.
  • Similar Options: Most memory foam and hybrid mattresses excel at motion isolation. Leesa Sapira Hybrid and Nectar Premier are likely on par with the AS3 Hybrid.

Bounce:

  • Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid: Offers moderate bounce due to the combination of memory foam and coils.
  • More Bounce: If you prefer a higher bounce, innerspring mattresses or hybrids with stronger coils might be better. WinkBed offers a wider range of firmness options, some with more bounce.

Edge Support:

  • Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid: Performs well in edge support compared to some memory foam mattresses, thanks to the supportive coil base.
  • Similar Options: Innerspring and hybrid mattresses generally provide better edge support than pure foam mattresses. Saatva Classic and WinkBed are likely comparable to the AS3 Hybrid.

Comfort Material:

  • Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid: Uses Bio-Pur® memory foam for pressure relief and a pocketed coil base for support.
  • Alternatives:
    • Memory Foam: Nectar Premier offers a thicker memory foam layer for a more cradling feel.
    • Innerspring: Saatva Classic uses a traditional innerspring core with a pillow top, offering a classic supportive feel.
    • Latex: Some hybrid mattresses incorporate latex, known for its responsiveness and bounce.

Here are some additional factors to consider when choosing a mattress:

  • Sleeping Position: Side sleepers typically prioritize pressure relief, while back and stomach sleepers might prefer a firmer mattress.
  • Body Weight: Heavier sleepers may benefit from a more robust mattress designed for higher weight capacities.
  • Personal Preference: Softness, bounce, and responsiveness are all subjective preferences.

Where to try the AS3

You have a couple of options for trying out the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress before you commit to a purchase:

  1. 100-Night Sleep Trial: Amerisleep offers a generous 100-night sleep trial with all their mattresses. This means you can order the AS3 Hybrid and try it out at home for an extended period. If you decide it’s not the right fit, Amerisleep will arrange for a free pickup and provide a full refund.

  2. Amerisleep Showrooms: Amerisleep has showroom locations in several states, including Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, and Texas. You can visit one of these showrooms and test the AS3 Hybrid in person.

Here’s how the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is likely to perform for different sleeping positions:

Side Sleepers:

  • Pros: The AS3 Hybrid’s medium-firmness provides excellent pressure relief for shoulders and hips, minimizing discomfort common in side sleeping. The memory foam conforms to the body’s curves for cushioning support.
  • Cons: Some very petite side sleepers might find it slightly too firm for maximum comfort.

Back Sleepers:

  • Pros: The balance between support and cushioning makes it a suitable option for many back sleepers. It promotes healthy spinal alignment and offers good pressure relief for the lower back.
  • Cons: Very strict back sleepers who prefer a noticeably firmer feel might want to consider the AS2 or AS1 from Amerisleep.

Stomach Sleepers:

  • Pros: The supportive coil system helps keep hips elevated, preventing excessive spinal curvature often experienced by stomach sleepers.
  • Cons: Some stomach sleepers, particularly heavier individuals, might prefer a firmer mattress for greater support at the hips to maintain proper alignment.

Combination Sleepers:

  • Pros: The AS3 Hybrid’s versatility makes it comfortable for those who switch between positions. The support and pressure relief work well in different sleeping styles.

Overall: The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid’s medium-firm feel makes it a great choice for most sleeping positions, particularly side, back, and combination sleepers.

Important to remember: Mattress comfort is somewhat subjective. Factors like your individual body weight and specific needs can influence how the AS3 Hybrid feels for your particular sleeping style.

Mattress Alternatives Similar to the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid

  • Leesa Sapira Hybrid: Offers a comparable medium-firm feel with memory foam and pocketed coils. Excellent motion isolation and a slightly thicker comfort layer give it a more luxurious feel than the AS3.
  • WinkBed: Similar pressure relief and bouncy feel that hybrid lovers seek. WinkBed boasts a variety of firmness options, durable construction, and a lifetime warranty.
  • Saatva Classic: Provides balanced contouring and support, and like the AS3, comes in multiple firmness levels. If you love the classic innerspring feel with a touch of luxury, this is a great option. They also focus on eco-friendly materials.
  • Nectar Premier: Features a traditional memory foam feel over coils for classic pressure relief. Generous 365-night trial period and a lifetime warranty give added comfort when making your purchase.

Factors to Help You Choose

  • Your Firmness Preference: Do you prefer something slightly softer or firmer than the AS3 Hybrid’s medium-firm feel?
  • Price Point: Mattresses on this list vary in price, so consider your budget carefully.
  • Trial Periods and Warranties: These policies offer reassurance when trying a new mattress.

Best Mattress 2019 – Which is Best for You?

Best Mattress 2019 Which is Best for You

Every year is a good year for mattresses. Regardless of the month or the season, people are going to buy the best mattress whenever they need to. The year 2018 was a good one for the mattress industry, and the good run is likely to continue in 2019 because the mattress industry is constantly evolving and introducing products that customers want. A good mattress is also considered luxury today.

Finding the Right Mattress

Buying a mattress isn’t tough; there are so many options, and you can always pick one. But finding the right mattress can be hard. To find the mattress that suits you best, you first must consider what kind of sleeper you are. Because the mattress is directly related to the quality of sleep, your sleep positions and requirements should first be considered in order to find the ideal mattress. Many people suffer from poor sleep quality because of the wrong mattress, and they never realize this. Most mattresses no matter how well-made they are, tend to sag and lose firmness over time. It’s true that mattresses can be expensive, and people try to put off buying a new one. But sleeping on a mattress that is not firm or supportive enough can not only lead to poor sleep quality but also result in aches and pains in different parts of the body.

To make sure that the mattress lasts for the longest time, you not only have to consider your own sleep requirements but also choose a brand that promises the best quality. Even the best mattresses are going to sag at some point, but when the quality is top-notch, this can be prevented to a great extent.

You first must consider your sleeping position when choosing a mattress. Sleeping positions can be broadly classified as side sleeping, back sleeping and stomach sleeping. Every person falls into one of these categories. It must be remembered that these three types of sleeping positions require different mattress firmness. Someone who sleeps on the side needs more support than someone who sleeps on the back or on the stomach. Another commonly overlooked consideration is the weight of the person. Depending upon the weight of the sleeper the firmness of a mattress can feel different to different people. If two people sharing the bed have a big difference in the weight, the ideal solution is to pick a customized mattress with the firmness on each side configured.

Mattress Types

There are hundreds of online mattress brands that produce a variety of mattress types. In 2019, several other brands are going to add to the list, increasing the types of mattresses available in the market. With so many options, it’s best to narrow down your choices by considering your requirements and preferences.  And the best way to narrow down your choices is to decide if you want a spring or foam mattress.

Although spring and foam mattresses are placed in different categories, spring mattresses are essentially made of foam, making them hybrid mattresses. Hybrid mattresses are popular because they combine the qualities of foam and spring. Hybrid mattresses have low sinkage and the bounce that many people prefer. On the downside, a hybrid mattress has more motion transfer and doesn’t contour to your body like an all-foam mattress.

Foam is the best choice for those who share the bed with a restless partner. The motion isolation offered by foam mattresses reduces bounce and prevents the other partner from disturbance. Foam contours to the body much better than spring and offers better pressure relief. On the downside, foam has greater sinkage, no bounce, and more heat retention. There are other types of mattresses also, latex being one of them. Latex can either be natural or a combination of latex with springs and cotton batting. Because foam is a synthetic, artificially manufactured substance, a lot of people try to stick to natural materials like latex, even though it is more expensive. Latex is not only environmentally friendly but also good for those who suffer from allergies. Latex is also great at regulating temperature and keeping the person cool on hot nights. However, latex does not have any bounce. Jeans looking for bounce should choose either foam or innerspring mattresses.

Best Budget Mattress – Amazon Rivet

amazon rivet mattress

Amazon, the retail giant, has quietly crept into the mattress industry and launched the first mattress in 2018. There’s hardly any industry that Amazon hasn’t delved in yet. From retail to electronics to entertainment, Amazon is all over the place. The company’s entry into the mattress industry wasn’t surprising at all. With its very first product, a 10-inch mattress, Amazon has hit the bull’s eye. What is most attractive about the mattress is the price. Amazon is for the masses, and its mattress is also made for all people to afford. Although there are only three sizes – full, queen, and king – their pricing is much lower than other brands, beginning at just $449 and going up to $624.

The mattress is made of two comfort layers constructed with memory foam and synthetic latex, and a high-density polyfoam foundation layer. The mattress also comes with a Celliant fabric cover, which claims to improve blood flow in those suffering from poor circulation. The Rivet also claims to help in the physical recovery for athletes. The Celliant fabric is also responsible for regulating temperature and keeping cool. The Rivet mattress is medium firm, ideal for making it most suitable for average weight and heavyweight sleepers.

BeBest Mattress for Heavy People – Big Fig

big fig

If you’re on the heavier side of the scale, you will be familiar with the struggle to find a mattress that’s firm enough for you. Not all mattresses are designed for heavy people, and even the firmest regular mattresses can feel too soft. This is where Big Fig scores, with a mattress that’s designed for heavyweight people. The mattress is exceptionally thick at 13 inches and has a combination of foam and springs. There are five layers of foam, and springs underneath. Since this is a mattress designed for heavy people, those under 225 pounds will find it too firm. Given the thickness, the mattress will easily last five years or more.

Best Temperature Regulating Mattress -The Pod by Eight Sleep

Eight Sleep Pod

A mattress that feels great AND can regulate your temperature throughout the night is the holy grail of mattress technology. Enter the Eight Sleep Pod. This mattress can do just about everything. It starts with a well-made memory foam mattress for optimum pressure relief and motion isolation. The biggest drawback with foam is that it retains heat. To mitigate this, the Pod has a grid that circulates conditioned water through it. It is split into 2 zones for queen sizes and up so that each side of the bed can be a different temperature for you and your partner. Not only that but it will change temperature based on your sleep patterns and built-in sensors that can monitor your body temperature. You can even time it to wake you up in the morning by gradually cooling down.

While it’s easy to warm a mattress, it’s no small feat to cool one let alone do both at the same time. This mattress can also integrate with Amazon Alexa and other smart devices so that you can program it to start your coffee maker as it sense you are waking up. Welcome to the future of sleep!

Frankly Mattress Review

Sleep Frankly Review

The Frankly mattress is a memory foam mattress that has an easily accessible zippered cover that is removable and machine washable. It is a medium firm feel that won’t sink in too much. Frankly derives its name from the idea that a mattress price should be transparent without gimmickry. They always offer the same price without any special promo codes. They offer a 10-year warranty and a 60 night trial with free shipping and returns.

Overview of the Frankly Mattress

This mattress is available exclusively through the Frankly website. The company is headquartered out of Georgia and the mattress is made in China. A queen size Frankly retails for $695 which makes it more aggressively priced than a majority of the online brands.

Here’s a quick video overview of the mattress that includes my initial findings.

How Much Does the Frankly Mattress Cost?

Below are the current prices of the mattress. They only carry queen and king sizes and do not offer promo codes. The pricing will remain consistent so you never have to worry about getting a better deal around typical sales periods which in the mattress industry usually happen around minor holidays like Memorial Day, Labor Day and Black Friday.

[table id=36 /]

Construction of the Frankly Mattress

Here’s a picture of the layers of the mattress. The construction specifications are below.

Frankly Mattress Construction

2″ gel memory foam

1″ adaptive Hi core foam

8″ base foam

1″ base foam

My Frankly Mattress Findings

This mattress has a removable, washable cover. It’s easy to unzip, wash and zip back on. Here’s a close up of the zipper system. Although this is a great feature, I still recommend using a mattress protector that is waterproof to keep your mattress in pristine condition.

Frankly mattress coverOverall this mattress is a medium feel. This mattress won’t cradle you as much as others because the transition layer catches you and eases you into the base layer providing proper support. Here’s a picture illustrating sinkage using my 14 lb. bowling ball.

Frankly Mattress sink

The video below shows how much motion transfer to expect with the Frankly mattress. It is all foam so there really isn’t any.

To give you a better idea of the construction of the mattress, here’s a video showing the inside of the mattress and how each layer reacts.

My Frankly Mattress Recommendation

The online mattress world is becoming increasingly crowded. All these choices is a blessing and a curse. It’s great to have choice but when there are literally hundreds of choices out there, making sure you choose the right mattress can be nerve-wracking. To help you make a better decision it is always best to set a budget and narrow down what particular construction is best for you.

The Frankly mattress is best suited for budget-conscious shoppers looking for an all foam mattress. This mattress is great for isolation motion and reducing partner disturbance. Although the trial period is a bit shorter than most companies, 60 nights is still plenty of time to know if this will be right for you.

If you are turned off by the feel of a dense foam mattress but still want some of the contouring that construction provides, the Frankly mattress will be a good fit because of the dense layer of transition foam and a more breathable, responsive layer at the top.

Frankly removes the fear of getting a better price around a holiday. With their consistently low price you have peace of mind knowing you purchased at the right time.

Sweet Zzz Nature’s Novel Mattress Review

Sweet Zzz Mattress

The Nature’s Novel mattress by Sweet Zzz is a mattress made with natural wool, Talalay latex and a base layer of foam. It comes with a 100 night trial with free shipping and free returns. This mattress is a nice departure from the typical 3 layer foam construction. The layers of latex at the top provide a breathable and supportive surface that makes it easy to change positions at night.

If you live in California, you can try out this mattress in person at their showrooms located in Los Angeles.

Overview of Nature’s Novel Mattress

Here’s a quick video overview of the Nature’s Novel Mattress. As you can see it is a fairly thick mattress that has a really nice optic white cover that has some stretch to it.

Construction of the Sweet Zzz Mattress

nature's novel construction

As you can see from the picture above, the base layer is foam. Above that there are two layers of latex. There is wool in between the top layer and the knit cover which acts as a natural fire barrier.

I’m not sure the exact weight but this is a heavy mattress. Mine came packed in a box the size of the mattress instead of roll packed so you may want to opt for the white glove delivery service for an extra $149.

How Much Does the Nature’s Novel Mattress Cost?

Below are the prices of the mattress before any discounts. Normally SweetZzz will offer discounts on the mattress dropping the prices below considerably.

[table id=40 /]

My Nature’s Novel Mattress Findings

I found this mattress to be on the firmer side which can be expected when you have latex at the top. This means you will sleep more “on” the mattress than “in” it.

Below is my 14 lb. bowling ball on the mattress to illustrate how much sink you can expect.

natures novel sinkage

What I found most remarkable about this mattress is that you get a fair amount of bounce and quick recovery despite it not having a spring system. The two layers of latex at the top are instantly responsive making it easy to change positions. The base layer of foam also helps absorb motion transfer.

Here’s a look inside the mattress. In this video you can see how each layer reacts. The two top layers of latex bounce back instantly and so does the foam base layer which provides a firm foundation for the top two latex layers.

Here’s another photo showing how much each layer gives when adding my 14 lb. bowling ball.

sweet zzz sink

This mattress has good breathability due to the top layers of latex. Below is a picture of the top latex layer. When latex is made, there are holes created by the mold when it is poured. This allows for more air transfer.

My Nature’s Novel Sweet Zzz Mattress Recommendation

If you’re looking for all the benefits that latex has to offer but don’t want to pay the high prices, the Nature’s Novel mattress is a great choice. While there is a base layer of foam, you do get the benefits of natural materials where it counts, at the top of the mattress.

True Review Of Acesleep Mattress

Acesleep Mattress review

The Acesleep mattress is a breathable memory foam mattress with a cover that is cool to the touch. It is on the softer side of the spectrum and is an excellent choice for people looking for a softer foam mattress that is still breathable and supportive. It stands out from the competition with a generous amount of cooling material on the cover and breathable, mesh side panels for maximum airflow.  A queen size currently retails for $889.99.

Overview of the Acesleep Mattress

You can purchase this mattress direct through their website or from Amazon. I would recommend going through their website as the return process will be easier than Amazon. It will ship quickly, in about 5 business days and arrives in a package like this.

Ace Sleep Bag

The mattress will take a little while to get to full shape, I would give it at least a couple days to get the true feel but it should be fine to sleep on about 8 hours after opening.

Here’s a quick video overview of the mattress.

How Much Does the Acesleep Mattress Cost?

Below are the current prices of the Acesleep mattress as listed on their website. This is before applying any discounts. Acesleep now offers $100 off prices below.

Construction of the Acesleep Mattress

Here are some of the construction highlights of this mattress. The top two layers are what really make this mattress feel cool and breathable.

acesleep layers

Luxury Ice Silk Cover

Ice silk fabric, with a new generation technology, brings you extra-soft, ultra breathability and deepest & longest lasting coolness you can ever imagine for a mattress cover.

Eco-Friendly Open-Cell Memory Foam 2½”

Advanced open-cell Eco-friendly plant-based memory foam is proved to sleep 25% cooler than traditional petroleum-based polyurethane by sleep studies.

Bamboo Memory Foam 2″

Natural bamboo charcoal is resistant to dust mites and other bacteria, regulates sleeping temperature and provides best spine support.

Gel Infused Memory Foam Cushioning Layer 1½”

Gel Memory Foam transmits excess heat from the top layers to keep coolness all night and better contour whole body and relieve pressure points as a cushioning layer.

High-Density Sag-Free Foam Base 6″

High density core base is the strong support for mattress, providing the bed a solid and durable foundation.

Here’s a picture of the inside of the mattress where you can see the actual layers.

Ace Sleep Mattress Layers

The top foam layer has tiny holes for breathability. When I pushed down on the top of the mattress with the cover on I could feel air flow through the cover.

acesleep top layerMy Acesleep Findings

This mattress immediately feels cool to the touch. That’s the first thing that really stood out. I then found it to conform very well right away. Here’s a picture of my 14 lb. bowling ball on the mattress to show how much it sinks.

In comparison to other foam mattresses with similar construction, this mattress gives you a medium amount of, “hug”. I will sink in just enough for good pressure relief but not so much as to feel you are trapped.

Ace Sleep SinkageThe video below is a slow-motion bowling ball drop to illustrate how much partner disturbance you might expect. This is an all foam mattress so you won’t notice your partner shifting positions at night.

Here’s a look inside the mattress. The layers are well defined and each has a unique purpose. The top layer is the softest followed by the transition layer underneath. When laying on the mattress I couldn’t feel where one layer started and the other ended. With some mattresses, you definitely feel that and that can be good or bad depending on what type of feel you are looking for. Generally, side sleepers will seek out a mattress that has good transition like this one.

My Acesleep Recommendation

Acesleep has done a great job with the overall construction of this mattress. It is a very versatile feel and will appeal to side and back sleepers. Stomach sleepers may find this mattress a little too soft. They have a 120 day trial period and so they take the risk out of trying it. If you are and/or your partner are side sleepers and prefer a foam mattress but tend to sleep hot, I would try this mattress first.

Zonkd Mattress Review

Zonkd Mattress 1

The Zonkd mattress is a memory foam and Talalay latex mattress that comes shipped to your door in a box. It departs from the typical 3 layer foam mattress by adding a layer of latex which is springy. This makes the mattress more resilient an easier to switch positions at night. Zonkd was created by mattress industry veterans who sought out to create their idea of an optimal mattress at a very competitive price. The Zonkd comes in a soft medium and firm option and for this review, I tried the medium firmness.

Overview of the Zonkd Mattress

Your Zonkd mattress will arrive in a box to your door. Shipping is fast as the mattress is Made in the USA. Here’s what it looks like out of the box.

zonkd medium

Here’s a quick video overview of the mattress. What I first noticed about it was how soft yet supportive it is.

Construction of the Zonkd Mattress

zonkd layers

Here are the construction specifications as listed by the company.

  1. Cover
We put just as much thought into what covers our mattress, as we put into what is on the inside because we wanted something that not only felt good, but looked good. Our mattress cover is a 550 gram double-knit cover for a loftier and softer feel that we’ve treated with antimicrobial properties to keep the mattress fresh year after year. The side border is upholstery grade fabric that will stand the test of time and not break down. With decorative tape and an embroidered logo on top, it is almost too soft and too attractive to cover with bedding.
  2. Conductive Contour LayerTwo inches of Copper Gel-infused memory foam contours to your body while dispersing body heat which keeps the sleeper cool and helps maintain the memory foam’s shape allowing for better spinal support all night long. In addition to its conductive properties, copper is believed to play many important roles in maintaining a healthy body.
  3.  Response LayerTwo inches of high-grade perforated Talalay Latex ensures maximum airflow for buoyancy and breathability. It is hypoallergenic and all natural, so it doesn’t have the negative chemical effects and smell that come from polyurethane foam. The Talalay Latex gives our mattress a springy feel to counteract the sinking feeling associated with traditional memory foam mattresses. This is the layer we alter the density of to create our different firmness levels. With the guidance of a chiropractor, we’ve created a questionnaire to help sleepers decide which firmness level best suits their needs.
  4. Foundation LayerEight inches of a solid base provides stability and durability- night after night.

How much does the Zonkd Cost?

Here are the latest prices of the mattress.

My Zonkd Findings

This mattress gives you a cozy and conforming feel with good support without the need for springs. Here’s a photo illustrating how much sink you can expect with my 14lb. bowling ball.

zonkd mattress sink

The video below illustrates motion transfer on the mattress. You’ll see that there really isn’t any motion transfer but the mattress does have a slight bounce to it due to the middle latex layer.

This is what the inside of the mattress looks like. It has a zippered cover so it was easy to remove.

You can clearly see the distinct layers starting with the copper-infused foam layer on the top followed by the latex layer and finally the base foam.

zonkd layers

The clip below shows how each layer responds. The latex layer in the middle acts like a spring system in that it provides additional support and contouring and some bounce.

My Recommendation

The Zonkd mattress is a really well-made mattress. You will really appreciate the layer of latex. Latex in general costs more than foam but for good reason. It’s a sustainable material that is very resilient. It will help prevent the mattress from breaking down prematurely and provides great support and added breathability.

One complaint I hear from people who sleep on an all foam mattress is that it can be hard to change positions at night. Sort of like climbing out of a divot. With the layer of latex, this becomes much less of an issue. People transitioning from a traditional innerspring mattress will appreciate the subtle bounce the latex layer provide while not taking away from the contouring benefits of the copper-infused top layer of foam.

The medium firm felt great and contoured a little better than most medium-firm mattresses I have tried. It will work for side and back sleepers. Dedicated side sleepers will probably want to go with the soft while dedicated stomach sleepers should likely go with the firm.

What I first noticed about this mattress is the 4 lb. foam on the top layer. It is a nice, thick foam that will conform very well. The 5 lb. foam underneath that gives great support without sinking in too much. Below is a picture with my 14 lb. bowling ball showing how much the mattress sinks.

With this mattress, there is no motion transfer. Check out the video below

My Affluent Rest Recommendation

The Affluent Rest mattress is a great choice for people that want a mattress with good contouring and support. You won’t sink too much into this mattress which makes it easier to move around on. I really appreciate that they use dense foams at the top layer which are durable and will give the mattress a long lifespan.

The Real Sleep Mattress Review by Real Simple

Unboxing and Overview of the Real Sleep Mattress

This mattress comes compressed in a box. This is the box I received for my queen size mattress. Your mattress should arrive about a week after placing your order online.

When you open the box you get a nice welcome message.

Out of the box the mattress is wrapped in plastic to keep it from expanding.

I couldn’t find specific details on the foam densities of this mattress from their website. Here is the construction information that they do list.

• Exceptional pressure relief

• Moisture and heat dissipation for better temperature management

• CertiPUR-US certified. No volatile organic compounds

• Made with the cleanest manufacturing processes in the industry

• Scientifically tested for long-lasting durability and comfort

How Much Does the Real Sleep Mattress Cost?

Here are the prices as listed on their Real Simple mattress website before discounts.

Twin $600
Twin XL $700
Full $850
Queen $995
King $1,150
Cal King $1,150

Here’s how much each size weighs:

Twin 50 lbs.
Twin XL 55 lbs.
Full 65 lbs.
Queen 79 lbs.
King 102 lbs.
Cal King 102 lbs.

My Real Sleep Mattress Findings

Overall I found this mattress to be similar to the Puffy however this mattress has an organic cotton cover while the puffy has a conventional cover. What you get is a nice supportive base and a top layer with a slower reacting foam that contours better.

Here’s a video demonstrating motion transfer. The bowling ball hits the mattress then starts sinking. A spring mattress will instantly sink when the bowling ball hits and then push back. With this mattress, most of the motion is absorbed.

Here’s a look inside the mattress. You can clearly see the two layers and how each layer reacts. The cotton cover has a zipper so removing it is easy.

Below is a picture of my 14lb. bowling ball on the Real Sleep mattress. This is classified as a medium firm mattress and I would say that’s an accurate assessment. For a memory foam mattress is is in the middle of the spectrum for firmness.

My Real Sleep Recommendation

This mattress is versatile enough for all sleepers but I think it works best for stomach and back sleepers. Overall it’s a great feel and the dense foam on the top layer provides enough pressure relief so that you really don’t need a transition layer. I appreciate that the cover is made with organic cotton but it is not an all natural mattress since the inside is memory foam.

I recommend this mattress for people looking for a supportive mattress with no motion transfer and minimal hug. This mattress doesn’t cradle quite as much as other mattresses such as hybrids and therefore won’t sleep as hot either. The Real Simple mattress shouldn’t disappoint.

Zombie Bed Review

Zombie Bed

Ready to sleep like the dead? Check out the Zombie Bed! The Zombie Bed is a memory foam and micro coil mattress that contours to the max. Similar to other online mattress brands, this mattress comes with a 100 night trial period where you can try the mattress in the comfort of your home and within that time if you don’t like it, returns are free.

Overview of the Zombie Bed

Below is a video overview of the Zombie Bed. As you can see the aesthetic is a departure from the boring old white knit fabric. Who knew a bed based on a Zombie motif could look so good?

How Much Does a Zombie Mattress Bed Cost?

Here is the current pricing:

Twin $499
Twin XL $550
Full $699
Queen $799
King $899
Cal King $950

Construction of the Zombie Bed

Zombie Bed Construction

Below are the construction details of the mattress according to their website.

1. FOUNDATION

A high-density foundation allows your ZombieBed to keep its support over time. This design is engineered for maximum durability and long lasting comfort.

2. MICRO COILS

Our micro-coils are uniquely responsive to every contour of the body. Over a thousand micro-coils are used to disperse your weight and reduce sagging and settlement, resulting in extreme comfort.

3. COOL GEL

A layer of cool gel provides airflow throughout the mattress and the foam cells boost the speed of your heat that transfer throughout the mattress to relieve any pressure.

4. SOFT POLYURETHANE

A top layer made from high-density, soft polyurethane. Added to increase flexibility and support.

My Zombie Bed Findings

You get a decent amount of sink with the Zombie Bed but more importantly, it contours really well and that’s due to the micro coil system sitting just below the top layer of foam. Micro coils don’t push back too aggressively. Instead, they enhance the contouring benefits of foam.

Zombie Bed Sink

Here’s a peek inside the Zombie Bed. It has a knit cover that can be unzipped. Here you can see each layer in action.

The Zombie Bed is a basically an all foam bed with the exception of the microcoils. The foam on the top layer is not that dense which means it recovers quickly and the microcoils underneath enhance recovery enough to give it just a little bounce.

The Zombie Bed performed middle of the road for heat retention. It sleeps cooler than a dense foam mattress and I didn’t notice sleeping hot to be an issue.

My Zombie Bed Recommendation

A drawback of typical memory foam mattresses is that they can be slow to contour. Zombie Bed solves this issues with their special blend of foam and microcoils. People who are new to memory foam will find this a more familiar feel. I recommend this mattress primarily for side and back sleepers but it will also work for stomach sleepers. GhostBed Luxe Mattress Review

GhostBed Luxe Review

The GhostBed Luxe is a very cool sleeping memory foam mattress. It is considerably softer and more plush than the original GhostBed. The GhostBed Luxe is an all foam mattress while the GhostBed original contains latex. Aside from the differences in construction, the GhostBed Luxe is considerably more expensive than the original version. A queen size GhostBed Luxe retails for $1475 while an original queen size goes for $795.

Overview of the GhostBed Luxe

Similar to the original GhostBed, the Luxe will come shipped to your door in a box in about a week. Here’s a picture of the box before opening the mattress. I ordered a twin size.

Ghostbed luxe box

Here’s another video of the mattress out of the box.

Right after opening it I found a nice little suprise, a free t-shirt.

Finally, this is what it looks like just moments after opening it from the packaging. This mattress is ready to sleep on soon after opening.

Ghostbed luxe twin size

Below is a video overview of the GhostBed. What I noticed right away after opening this mattress is that it is thicker than the original. The Luxe version is 13 inches deep while the original is 10.

Specifications and Construction of the GhostBed Luxe

Ghostbed luxe inside

Below are the construction details as listed on the GhostBed website

13″ GhostBed Luxe

Ghost Ice Fabric – Cooling from the first Touch

½” Cool fiber layer – Provides air flow

1” Gel Memory Foam – Give that Ghost Hug feel

Ghost Ice Layer – Phase Change Technology provides all night cooling

2” Gel Memory Foam – Pressure relief and heat absorption

2” Ghost Bounce foam – Resilient foam: responsive like Latex and contouring like Memory Foam

7.5” Support Core – Hi density for durability and longevity

My GhostBed Findings

This mattress was designed to sleep cool. Since this is an all foam mattress, it’s easier said than done. Let’s start from the top with the “Ghost Ice Fabric”. From what I can tell this is a fabric treated with a phase change material to help draw heat away. Heres a picture of the cover. Notice that it is a quilted cover.

Ghostbed Luxe Fabric

Here’s how much my 16 lb. bowling ball sank into the mattress:

GhostBed Luxe Sink

Underneath this is more cooling technology in particular, the GHost Ice layer which is that thin blue layer at the very top. And underneath this layer is a layer of cooling gel.

Ghost Ice Technology

Here’s how each of the foam layers reacts.

Here’s a video showing how much movement you can expect on your GhostBed Luxe, not much!

Finally, I put my thermal camera on the GhostBed not only to detect heat transfer but also see if I can spot any Ghosts…

My GhostBed Luxe Recommendation

So, who is the ideal sleeper for the GhostBed Luxe? I recommend the GhostBed Luxe to side sleepers that sleep hot but still want all the benefits that a foam mattress provides. Although it is a bit on the pricier end of the spectrum in comparison to the original Ghostbed, you do get a good amount of cooling technology and for hot sleepers, this is worth it.

There is little to motion transfer with this mattress as well. Given the 7 layer construction it all adds up to a luxury feel that allows you to sleep cool. People that have been underwhelmed with other online mattress brands may want to check this out if they are craving more of that familiar pillow top feel without the high price tags.

Spoon Mattress Review

4 FlexSupportBaseFoam

The Spoon Sleep mattress is a hybrid mattress that combines the pressure relief of memory foam with the support of innerspring coils. It is designed to provide a balance of comfort and support for all sleep positions, and is particularly well-suited for back sleepers.

The mattress is made up of five layers:

  • Climate Cool Touch Cover: This cover dissipates excess heat to keep sleepers cool and comfortable.
  • Rely Foam: This layer of foam provides a medium-firm sleep surface with good responsiveness.
  • Spoon Pillar Technology: This layer of foam cylinders is strategically placed to provide pressure relief and support.
  • Serene Foam: This layer of foam is designed to be more breathable than memory foam, and it also helps to prevent heat buildup.
  • Quantum® Edge Elite Steel Perimeter: This perimeter provides edge support and prevents sleepers from rolling off the bed.

The Spoon Sleep mattress is available in a variety of sizes and firmness levels, so sleepers can find the perfect mattress for their needs. It also comes with a 100-night sleep trial, so sleepers can try it out before they commit to buying it.

Here is an overview of the pros and cons of the Spoon Sleep mattress:

Pros:

  • Provides a good balance of comfort and support
  • Good pressure relief
  • Good edge support
  • Available in a variety of sizes and firmness levels
  • Comes with a 100-night sleep trial

Cons:

  • Some sleepers may find the mattress to be too soft
  • The mattress can be heavy and difficult to move

Overall, the Spoon Sleep mattress is a good option for sleepers who are looking for a hybrid mattress that provides a balance of comfort and support. It is also a good option for sleepers who are looking for a mattress with good edge support.

The Spoon Mattress is a memory foam mattress with foam cylinders inside that act like inner springs. In fact they are in some ways superior to inner springs because they are less prone to breaking down and have much less motion transfer but still provide a little bit of bounce. People looking for an all foam mattress but don’t want to deal with the motion transfer issues commonly associated with springs, the Spoon mattress is definitely worth considering.

Overview of the Spoon Mattress

You can buy the Spoon Mattress exclusively through their website. This mattress is made in the USA and will ship to your door about 5 business days after ordering.  Below is a picture of the box that houses the mattress.

Below is a video explaining some of the general features of the mattress.

Construction of the Spoon Sleep Mattress

This video from the Spoon website does a great job of explaining how the mattress is constructed. It is not your typical 3 layer foam mattress. The foam pillars inside are what really set this mattress apart.

Here’s a picture of the inside of the mattress. As you can see it looks like a typical mattress but when you dig deeper you will find the pillars inside.

Below is a picture from their website which shows placement of the foam pillars.

spoon sleep pillar squish

My Spoon Sleep Findings

Overall I found this mattress to be more of a medium firm feel. You definitely get good support from the foam pillars underneath.

Here’s a video that shows how each layer responds to pressure.

I also poured some water on the top of the mattress to test the water resistant cover. True to claims, it beaded quickly and stayed that way for a while. This made it easy to clean up without the water setting in.

Having a cover like this is nice because you can get away with not needing a mattress protector. However, if this is for a child that still may be prone to wetting the bed, then I would still add a protector for safety.

I received an individual pillar when I opened the box.

spoon sleep wrapper pillar

The pillar itself is really firm. Below is a video that shows how quickly it bounces back and this will emulate an inner spring.

The mattress performs about average for heat retention. I think the water proof barrier may make it a bit less breathable than most knit covers I have tested.

As for motion transfer, you do get a little bounce in part from the pillars and also because they don’t use as dense of foam on the top layer in comparison to some of the other online brands I have tried.

My Spoon Sleep Recommendation

The Spoon Sleep mattress is not just another memory foam mattress in a box. This product has brought some true innovation to market and I think customers will welcome it. People looking for the pressure relief that only memory foam can provide along with some of the feel reminiscent of a traditional spring mattress will enjoy the Spoon mattress.
