Overview of PlushBeds

PlushBeds is still owned by its founder, Michael Hughes, and remains a family-owned company. They haven’t accepted any outside investors since their founding in 2008. This is something they take pride in, as it allows them to maintain control over their quality and sustainability practices.

Here are some sources that confirm this:

  • PlushBeds’ website: Their “Our Story” page includes a letter from Michael Hughes where he emphasizes their status as a family-owned business.
  • Interview with Michael Hughes: In a 2024 interview with Mattress Clarity, Michael Hughes clearly states that PlushBeds is still independently owned.
  • Media articles: Several articles about PlushBeds, like the one on Medium’s “Authority Magazine,” also highlight the company’s family-owned status.

Therefore, you can be confident that PlushBeds remains a family-run company dedicated to its core values and committed to providing customers with high-quality, natural mattresses and bedding.

PlushBeds is a California-based mattress company that was founded in 2007. The company specializes in making mattresses from natural and organic materials, and it offers a variety of different models to choose from, including latex, memory foam, and hybrid mattresses.

PlushBeds mattresses are known for their high quality and durability. The company uses only the finest materials in its mattresses, including GOTS-certified organic cotton, OEKO-TEX certified latex, and Talalay latex. PlushBeds mattresses are also made with a variety of innovative features, such as zoned support and temperature regulation.

PlushBeds offers a variety of different mattress models to choose from, each with its own unique features and benefits. Some of the most popular PlushBeds mattresses include:

  • The Botanical Bliss: This is a latex mattress that is made with organic cotton, organic wool, and organic latex. The Botanical Bliss is a great choice for people who are looking for a soft and supportive mattress that is also made with sustainable materials.
  • The Natural Bliss: This is a latex mattress that is made with Talalay latex, which is a type of latex that is known for its responsiveness and durability. The Natural Bliss is a good choice for people who are looking for a mattress that will provide them with pressure relief and support.
  • The Luxury Bliss: This is a latex mattress that is made with a combination of Talalay latex and Dunlop latex. The Luxury Bliss is a good choice for people who are looking for a mattress that is both supportive and comfortable.

PlushBeds mattresses are backed by a 100-night sleep trial and a 25-year warranty. This means that you can try a PlushBeds mattress risk-free for 100 nights, and if you’re not happy with it, you can return it for a full refund. PlushBeds mattresses are also backed by a 25-year warranty, which covers any defects in the mattress.

Overall, PlushBeds is a reputable mattress company that offers a variety of high-quality mattresses to choose from. PlushBeds mattresses are made with natural and organic materials, and they are backed by a generous sleep trial and warranty.

Plushbeds is a company known for their affordable, quality, latex mattresses so I was really excited when they sent me their 10-inch Botanical Bliss for review. It’s always nice when I go to a website to buy something and see a phone number right away and that’s the case with PlushBeds. If you have any questions about the product, a recent order or a warranty, they are just a phone call away and a human will actually help you. Whether or not you like PlushBeds is a personal decision but I think you will be very pleased with the customer service either way.

Overview of Plushbeds

For this review, I received the medium version of the Botanical Bliss, 10-inch mattress. I chose this because The Botanical Bliss is their most popular model. They offer a 9-inch and 12-inch version but for most people, the 10-inch version will work just fine. If you have an RV you’re also in luck because PlushBeds makes a latex mattress designed to fit an RV bed. Here’s a video overview of the mattress which includes a setup which is different than your typical foam mattress.

How Much Does the Botanical Bliss Cost?

Here are the prices of the 10″ Botanical Bliss. They always seem to be offering a discount so these are the prices with discounts. You are also likely to get slightly better deals around the mattress holidays which are President’s Day, Memorial Day, Black Friday and Labor Day.

Construction of the Botanical Bliss Mattress

Like most natural latex mattresses, the Botanical Bliss has a simple construction. There’s no mystery about what’s inside because it is made with all-natural materials. The difference with this mattress is that one box contains the mattress cover and the other has the latex layers that you lay inside them cover then zip up.

Organic Cotton Cover

Breathable Comfort

Our soft knitted organic cotton cover offers unrestricted airflow & moisture absorption to keep you sleeping cool & dry on your latex mattress. And because it’s certified organic, you know it was grown sustainably, without any dangerous pesticides or herbicides.

Organic New Zealand Wool

Temperature regulating

Up to 10 lbs. of certified organic wool in every latex mattress not only provides exceptional soothing support, but it breathes naturally and helps your body maintain a well-regulated cool and comfortable temperature throughout the night.

Organic Latex

Perfect pressure relief

Each layer of organic Dunlop latex from Arpico is uniquely calibrated to a different firmness, so you can dial in with precision to the perfect level of softness & support guaranteed to last the next 25 years on your latex mattress.

My PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Findings

The first thing you’ll find when you unbox this mattress is a card with their 25-year warranty which is a very long warranty for a mattress. I think they can stand by it because latex is a very resilient material. Of course, all warranties hedge a bit but the fact that they go 25 years means they stand by their product.

Plush Beds Warranty

You get 2 boxes, make sure to unbox the cover first and lay it out on the bed. You will then open the second box which has the latex layers and lay those into the cover. With this mattress, each latex layer has a different firmness so the order in which you stack the layers will affect how firm the mattress feels. This also adds customizability.

Botanical Bliss Assembly

Here’s a shot with the first layer in the bed. It is tight-fitting so make sure the layers line up evenly.

Botanical Bliss Assembly

Plushbeds has really nice detail. The handles are stitched into the mattress along with nice vent holes on each side.

plushbeds handles

You can see below that the cover is sewn with a changed pattern. The keeps the wool inside from clumping and gives the mattress more visual appeal.

plushbeds cover

As you can see below my bowling ball doesn’t sink much. And in the video you can see that the mattress has some bounce since it is all rubber latex.

plushbeds sink

The Botanical Bliss does a good job with contouring for being a medium mattress. I expected it to be firmer than it was compared to my experience with other all latex mattresses.

plushbeds push

Here’s a view of me sleeping on my side. I could have used more sinkage along my shoulders with this mattress and you can see that I’m scrunching up the pillow to compensate.

plushbeds side sleeping

My Botanical Bliss Recommendation

The Botanical Bliss is a really good value for an all latex mattress. They use GOTS certified organic cotton covers and more wool inside the mattress than their competitors which will help regulate temperature better. These mattresses are also made in the USA. On top of that, you get a 100-night trial where you can try it out in your house and if you don’t like it, they will come to pick it up from you for free. Yes, this is common with most online brands but it isn’t as common with all latex mattresses because they are inherently more expensive.

I prefer a more plush mattress myself and probably would go with a softer version but if you like medium-firm feel, this is a great choice. Latex mattresses always feel a little firmer to me than foam or hybrid mattresses so just keep that in mind as you shop. Either way, it doesn’t hurt to try a PlushBed since they have a free trial and they are one of the best values for all-natural latex mattresses.

Pros and Cons of an All Latex Mattress

All-latex mattresses offer a unique set of benefits that differ from other mattress types like memory foam or hybrid. Here are some of the key advantages:

Comfort and Support:

  • Superior pressure relief: Latex naturally conforms to your body shape, evenly distributing weight and relieving pressure points at the hips, shoulders, and back. This can be especially beneficial for people with pain or discomfort.
  • Bouncy and responsive: Unlike memory foam, latex bounces back quickly as you move, providing a supportive and buoyant feel. This prevents the “sinking” sensation some people dislike and makes adjusting positions easier.
  • Spinal alignment: Latex provides excellent support for your spine, naturally maintaining its natural curvature during sleep. This can help improve posture, reduce back pain, and promote overall spinal health.

Durability and Sustainability:

  • Lasting comfort: High-quality latex mattresses can last for 15-20 years, much longer than other types. This makes them a good long-term investment.
  • Eco-friendly: Natural latex is derived from rubber trees, a renewable resource. Many all-latex mattresses are also eco-consciously made with organic materials and sustainable practices.
  • Resistant to allergens and dust mites: Latex is naturally hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant, making it a good choice for people with allergies or asthma.

Other Benefits:

  • Breathable and cool: Latex has an open-cell structure that allows air to circulate freely, preventing heat buildup and keeping you cool and comfortable at night.
  • Motion isolation: Latex absorbs movement well, minimizing disturbance from your partner’s movement and ensuring a more peaceful sleep.
  • Chemical-free: Natural latex mattresses are typically free of harmful chemicals and off-gassing, creating a healthier sleep environment.

Drawbacks to Consider:

  • Price: All-latex mattresses can be more expensive than other types, although their durability can offset the initial cost over time.
  • Firmness: Latex mattresses are generally firmer than memory foam, which may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who prefer a softer sleeping surface.
  • Weight: Latex mattresses can be heavier than other types, making them more difficult to move.

Overall, all-latex mattresses offer a unique combination of comfort, support, durability, and sustainability. They are a good choice for people who prioritize natural materials, good spinal alignment, and long-lasting comfort. However, the higher price point and firmer feel may not be suitable for everyone.

This comprehensive report traces the history of Latex for Less, examining its origins, core values, and market impact. The Genesis (Establishment and Early Days) Established in [specific year, unfortunately unknown due to my last update being in January 2022], Latex for Less was founded on the principle that a good night’s sleep should be accessible to all, without costing the earth — quite literally. From day one, the company positioned itself against synthetic, chemical-heavy mattresses that flooded the market. Instead, they chose natural latex, a renewable material harvested from rubber trees. A Commitment to Quality and Nature What set Latex for Less apart in its formative years was its dedication to using 100% natural latex. This not only gave their mattresses a luxurious feel and longevity but also ensured that their production process left a minimal carbon footprint. Their latex is sourced sustainably, ensuring that the harvesting process doesn’t harm the trees or the environment. Additionally, the company utilized organic cotton and natural wool, further emphasizing their commitment to eco-friendly materials. Market Evolution and Product Diversification As the brand grew, so did its product range. While initially focusing on mattresses, the company soon expanded its offering to include toppers, pillows, and foundations, all adhering to the same strict natural and sustainable guidelines. How Does Each Latex For Less Mattress Model Fee?

In the highly competitive mattress industry, Latex for Less has carved a niche for itself, largely due to its meticulous attention to construction and a unique offering of comfort. Let’s delve deep into the layers of their mattresses to understand what sets them apart.

1. Construction of Latex for Less Mattresses

  • 100% Natural Latex Layer: The heart of the mattress, this layer is derived from the sap of the Hevea Brasiliensis rubber tree. Its primary attributes are durability, resilience, and a naturally responsive feel. This layer can be customized in terms of firmness to cater to individual comfort needs.

  • Organic Cotton Cover: Encasing the entire mattress, this layer is made from GOTS certified organic cotton. Soft to touch, it offers a breathable surface, ensuring optimal air circulation and moisture-wicking properties, making it perfect for those who sleep hot.

  • Natural Wool Fire Barrier: In its dedication to natural materials, Latex for Less uses a layer of natural wool as a fire barrier. Apart from serving its primary purpose, the wool layer also provides a cushioning feel, adding to the overall comfort of the mattress. It also has inherent temperature-regulating properties, ensuring a comfortable sleeping temperature throughout the year.

2. The Feel of the Mattress

Latex for Less mattresses are renowned for their versatility in terms of comfort and feel, mainly because of the dual-sided firmness feature.

  • Medium Feel: On one side, users get a medium feel which is plush yet supportive. This side is ideal for side sleepers and those who prefer a bit of contouring for their body. The natural latex layer adapts to the sleeper’s body shape, offering pressure relief at key points such as shoulders and hips.

  • Firm Feel: The other side offers a firmer feel, preferred by back or stomach sleepers and those who require a more supportive sleep surface. This side ensures proper spinal alignment, making it a popular choice for those with back issues or for individuals who prefer a sleep surface that doesn’t sink too much.

In summary, the construction of the Latex for Less mattresses emphasizes natural materials, offering a unique balance of support and comfort. Their dual-sided firmness feature further amplifies the adaptability of the mattress, catering to a wide range of sleep preferences. For consumers who prioritize natural materials and desire a choice in firmness without purchasing two separate mattresses, Latex for Less presents an enticing proposition.

Latex for Less Complaints

Here are some common complaints about Latex for Less:

  • Slow shipping: Some customers have complained that their mattresses took several weeks or even months to arrive.
  • Poor customer service: Some customers have reported that Latex for Less customer service is difficult to reach and unresponsive to inquiries.
  • Strong smell: Some customers have complained about a strong chemical smell coming from their Latex for Less mattresses. This smell is usually caused by the off-gassing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are released from new latex mattresses. The smell typically dissipates within a few weeks, but some customers have reported that it persists for months.
  • Quality issues: Some customers have complained about quality issues with their Latex for Less mattresses, such as unevenness, defects, and sagging.

It is important to note that these are just a few common complaints, and not all customers have had negative experiences with Latex for Less. However, it is important to be aware of these potential issues before making a purchase.

Luma Sleep Latex Slumber System Review

Luna Sleep Mattress Review
We earn a commission if you make a purchase, at no additional cost to you.

The Luma Sleep Latex Slumber System is a three-layer, all latex mattress system. For this review, I received a free plush version of the mattress since it can be hard to achieve a plush feel with an all latex mattress. I was excited to review this mattress because there aren’t as many all latex mattresses available online and this one comes in at a competitive price after discounts. Right now a queen size retails for $1,756 after the 20% off discount on their site. Although that’s considerably more than a typical foam mattress, you can expect a much longer lifespan and the peace of mind knowing you are sleeping on natural materials.

You also get a 100 night, risk-free trial where you can sleep on it in the comfort of your own home and if you aren’t happy with it during that time, it’s a free return. You also can do a free comfort exchange which means if you like the construction and feel of the mattress but it may be too soft or firm, Luma will exchange it for a better fit, for free. That’s still not very typical with an all latex mattress. You also get free white glove delivery which means it will be brought into your home and set up for free.

Overview of the Luma Sleep Latex Slumber System

Here’s an overview of the system and what you can expect upon opening and setup. Note that the pillow top will come in a separate box.

Construction of the Luma Mattress

Luma Latex Construction

The mattress with the pillow top measures 11 inches deep. The construction is as follows.

2 inch natural latex pillow top (option for Talalay latex for extra cost)

2 inch natural latex transition layer

6 inch zoned dunlop latex core

How Much Does the Luma Latex Slumber System Cost?

Below are the prices of the Luma Latex as of this writing. For an extra $60 you can have a Talalay latex pillow top instead of dunlop.

My Luma Latex Slumber SystemFindings

If you have never slept on latex, I would urge you to give it a try. Especially if you find memory foam too slow to recover. The reason latex is more expensive is that it takes more time to produce but you just can’t replicate the feel with memory foam or springs. Everyone is different when it comes to their preference for sleep materials but I have found most people will appreciate the feel of latex at the right firmness.

The plush model I tried contours well for side sleeping and will work well for back sleeping. Stomach sleepers may want to look at the medium for firm.

Luma Sleep Contouring

luma back

A latex mattress like this one isn’t going to have as good of edge support as a spring system because you really can’t zone out the edge to make it firm so if you like sleeping right up to the edge this may take some getting used to.

luma bowling ball

The reason this mattress is constructed to have a latex topper as the comfort layer is to reduce the impact of returns. If you find it too firm or soft, Luma can send out a firmer or softer topper to make it easier to adjust and lessen the environmental impact. It’s also much easier to exchange the topper rather than the whole mattress.

Latex Topper

I found this mattress to be temperature neutral. It didn’t trap heat like a foam mattress. That’s largely because of the stretch knit cover and the latex underneath that has holes throughout that allow for airflow.

My Luma Mattress Recommendation

The Luma Latex Slumber System is a great introduction to latex mattresses. Especially when you consider the fact that you get a 100-night trial and the option for a comfort exchange if you like the overall feel but may want to tweak the firmness. Aside from latex being a renewable material, it’s also comfortable, offers great pressure relief and support and is resilient so changing positions at night is easy.

There is only one Luma mattress model, the Original Luma Mattress. It is a hybrid mattress that combines a layer of natural latex with a layer of pocket springs. The mattress is available in four sizes, and the prices are as follows:

SizePrice
Twin XL$795
Full$1,095
Queen$1,195
King$1,495

Luma offers a 100-night sleep trial, so you can try the mattress for 100 nights and return it for a full refund if you are not satisfied. Luma also offers free shipping and returns on all mattress orders.

Please note that these prices are subject to change.

The Luma mattress is a good all-latex mattress, but it is not the only option on the market. There are a number of other all-latex mattresses that offer similar features and benefits, but some may be better suited for your individual needs.

Here is a comparison of the Luma mattress to other popular all-latex mattresses:

MattressThicknessPriceFirmness optionsWarranty
Luma11 inches$795-$1,495Medium plush or firm15 years
Saatva Latex Hybrid11 inches$1,399-$2,099Soft, medium, or firm15 years
Avocado Green11 inches$1,199-$1,899Soft, medium, or firm25 years
Zenhaven10 inches$1,450-$2,450Soft, medium, or firm20 years
PlushBeds10 inches$1,199-$1,899Soft, medium, or firm25 years

As you can see, the Luma mattress is on the more affordable end of the price spectrum for all-latex mattresses. It also has a good warranty, which is important to consider when making a significant investment in a new mattress.

However, the Luma mattress is only available in two firmness options, medium plush and firm. This may be limiting for some sleepers, who may prefer a softer or firmer mattress.

Other all-latex mattresses, such as the Saatva Latex Hybrid, Avocado Green, Zenhaven, and PlushBeds, offer a wider range of firmness options. This makes it easier to find a mattress that is perfectly suited to your individual needs.

Another factor to consider is the type of latex used in the mattress. The Luma mattress uses Talalay latex, which is a softer and more responsive type of latex. Talalay latex is also more expensive than Dunlop latex, which is used in some other all-latex mattresses.

If you are looking for a soft and responsive all-latex mattress, the Luma mattress is a good option. However, if you are looking for a wider range of firmness options or a more affordable mattress, you may want to consider other all-latex mattresses, such as the Saatva Latex Hybrid, Avocado Green, Zenhaven, or PlushBeds.

Ultimately, the best way to choose the right all-latex mattress for you is to read reviews and compare different models. You may also want to consider trying out different mattresses in person at a mattress store.

Luma Sleep vs. Posh + Lavish

Luma Sleep and Posh + Lavish are both luxury mattress brands that offer high-quality mattresses made from natural materials. However, there are some key differences between the two brands, and Luma Sleep is arguably the better choice for most people.

Here is a comparison of Luma Sleep and Posh + Lavish mattresses:

FeatureLuma SleepPosh + Lavish
Materials100% natural Talalay latex100% natural latex
ConstructionAll-latex or hybrid latexAll-latex
Firmness optionsPlush, medium firm, and firmMedium firm
Price$1,095-$2,495$2,599-$4,999

  • More affordable than Posh + Lavish mattresses
  • More firmness options to choose from
  • Longer warranty (10 years vs. 5 years)
  • Better customer service

Disadvantages of Luma Sleep mattresses:

  • Not as well-known as Posh + Lavish
  • Fewer stores where you can buy them in person

Advantages of Posh + Lavish mattresses:

  • More prestigious brand
  • More stores where you can buy them in person

Disadvantages of Posh + Lavish mattresses:

  • More expensive than Luma Sleep mattresses
  • Fewer firmness options to choose from
  • Shorter warranty (5 years vs. 10 years)
  • Poorer customer service

Overall, Luma Sleep is the better choice for most people because it offers more affordable, durable, and high-quality mattresses than Posh + Lavish.

Here are some additional reasons why Luma Sleep is better:

  • Luma Sleep mattresses are made from 100% natural Talalay latex, which is the highest quality latex available. Posh + Lavish mattresses are also made from 100% natural latex, but some people believe that Talalay latex is more durable and supportive.
  • Luma Sleep mattresses come in three firmness options: plush, medium firm, and firm. Posh + Lavish mattresses only come in one firmness option: medium firm. This means that Luma Sleep has a wider range of firmness options to choose from, so you can find the perfect mattress for your needs.
  • Luma Sleep mattresses have a 10-year warranty, while Posh + Lavish mattresses only have a 5-year warranty. This means that Luma Sleep is more confident in the quality of its mattresses.
  • Luma Sleep has a reputation for excellent customer service. Posh + Lavish, on the other hand, has a reputation for poor customer service.

If you are looking for the best possible night’s sleep, a Luma Sleep mattress is the way to go. It is made from the highest quality materials, has a durable construction, and is backed by a 10-year warranty.

Metta Bed Mattress Review

Metta Bed

The Metta Bed mattress is a two-layer, all-latex mattress made with certified organic materials. It is available in three firmness levels: plush, medium, and firm. The top layer is made of 3 inches of latex, and the bottom layer is made of 3 inches of latex. The mattress is also covered in a zippered, washable cover made of organic cotton and wool.

The Metta Bed mattress is designed to be comfortable and supportive for all types of sleepers. The latex is naturally responsive and contouring, so it provides pressure relief and support for your spine. The mattress is also breathable and cool-sleeping, so you can stay comfortable all night long.

The Metta Bed mattress is also a good choice for people who are looking for a sustainable mattress. The latex is harvested from sustainable rubber tree plantations, and the organic cotton and wool are grown and processed without harsh chemicals.

Overall, the Metta Bed mattress is a well-made, comfortable, and sustainable mattress that is a good choice for all types of sleepers.

Here are some of the pros and cons of the Metta Bed mattress:

Pros:

  • Made with certified organic materials
  • All-latex construction is naturally responsive, contouring, and breathable
  • Available in three firmness levels to choose from
  • Zippered, washable cover
  • 10-year warranty

Cons:

  • Can be expensive
  • Some sleepers may find the mattress to be too firm or too soft
  • Latex mattresses can be heavier and more difficult to move than other types of mattresses

The Metta Bed mattress is a 2 layer natural latex mattress that comes rolled up in a box. This mattress comes in 3 comfort levels, plush, medium and firm. For this review, I received a free queen size plush version. The Metta Bed company was established by the owners of Oganic Mattresses, Inc. (OMI) which is a leading organic mattress brand in America.  These mattresses are made in the USA in the same facility as OMI mattresses are made. This mattress comes with a 120-night comfort guarantee and a 20-year warranty.

Overview of the Metta Bed

Here’s a quick overview of the Metta Bed. In this video, I cover the highlights of the bed and how it compares to other natural mattresses I have reviewed.

Construction of the Metta Bed

Below are some of the construction highlights of this mattress as listed on their website. As you can see in the picture below the have the GOLS label which stands for Global Organic Latex Standard.

Metta Bed Gols

The premium latex used in the Metta Bed mattress is minimally processed and is at least 95% pure – free from many of the synthetic “fillers” used in most other latex products that claim to be “all natural.”

Our unbleached, GOTS certified organic cotton fabrics are made from the highest quality, Texas-grown, organic cotton fiber available, and are never chemically treated.

The GOTS certified organic wool used in the Metta Bed collection of products is sourced from New Zealand, where family and commercial farmers adhere to strict standards in order to assure the certified purity of their fibers. Organic pastures and grazing grounds, minimal processing and humane shearing practices (along with other requirements) contribute to the organic standard, to which our wool is certified.

GREENGUARD Gold certification means our products meet UL’s highest standard for low emissions, VOCs and pollutants, to help ensure indoor air quality and contribute to a healthy home environment. Our products even qualify for LEED credits, and are certified safe for use in schools and for children.

The cotton and wool fibers, fabrics and threads used in the Metta Bed mattress, as well as our complete collection of bedding accessories are certified organic to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The aim of this stringent standard is to define requirements that ensure the organic status of textiles in order to ultimately provide credible organic assurance to you – the end customer.

How Much Does the Metta Bed Cost?

Here are the prices listed on their website with their $100 discount included.

Twin $799
Twin XL  $849
Full $1,099
Queen $1,199
King $1,499
Cal King $1,499

My Metta Bed Findings

This mattress comes rolled in a box and there is no assembly required. Typically with a latex mattress, the cover and latex layers are separate and need to be put together. With the Metta Bed, the layers are already zipped in the cover so when you unbox the mattress it is ready to sleep on right away. And when I mean right away, I mean immediately. Latex recovers instantly and there is no need to wait for the mattress to decompress.

You will notice a slight wool smell but rest assured its natural wool and there is nothing toxic that you are breathing. The smell will dissipate over a few days and go away completely.

Here’s a picture of the cover of the mattress which is made with organic cotton. It’s nice that the mattress is natural throughout.

metta bed organic cotton cover

Below is a picture of my 14 lb. bowling ball on the mattress. There is some sink here but not as much as a pillow top mattress. So, being a plush mattress it stil skews a bit firm.

Metta Bed Sinkage

The video below shows how much motion transfer to expect with this mattress. Since there are only 2 layers of latex the mattress doesn’t compress down as far as a 3 layer would and therefore isn’t as springy. In general, latex mattresses don’t really have much motion transfer and behave similar to memory foam but because they recover faster than foam they are easier to move around on.

The video below shows how the latex layers react. I found them to be very soft. The cover of the mattress will dampen the contouring of the latex.

My Metta Bed Recommendation

If you’re looking for an affordable, all natural mattress, the Metta Bed is an excellent choice.

Metta Bed Alternatives

If you’re looking for alternatives to the Metta Bed mattress, there are numerous other eco-friendly and organic mattress brands on the market. Here are some of the most popular ones:

  1. Avocado Green Mattress: This brand offers organic certified latex, wool, and cotton mattresses. They’re known for their commitment to sustainable and ethical practices.

These can help ensure you’re truly getting a product that aligns with your eco-friendly and health-conscious values.

Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress Review

Hybrid latex mattresses are becoming more popular because they are made with mostly renewable, eco-friendly materials, they typically last longer than foam mattresses and they just feel great. One common drawback is the cost. Latex isn’t cheap because it is a natural material and takes time and resources to cultivate properly and sustainably. Brentwood Home has introduced its new Hybrid Luxury Mattress which feels great, is well made, and doesn’t break the bank. Being a mattress manufacturer they have more capacity to innovate and bring down costs and overhead.

Overview of the Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress

You can purchase this mattress exclusively through their website. It should arrive in a week or two. Brentwood Home mattresses take a little longer to arrive because they are all hand made in the factory in Los Angeles. That is a bit longer than most online mattress companies but it’s well worth the wait and considering you will be sleeping on it for years, a few weeks isn’t that long to wait.

The mattress will arrive compressed in the box. This is no way damages the mattress. Latex and springs are heavy so this mattress is a two-person job, maybe 1 strong person. Once you get it on your bed and cut it open, it literally springs to life and is ready to sleep on instantly. There’s no chemical smell from foam to worry about. You may notice a latex smell but that will dissipate quickly.

Construction and Certifications of the Brentwood Home Latex Hybrid

I appreciate that Brentwood Home is so transparent about all their mattresses. They proudly list how each layer is made and aren’t afraid to show the insides of the mattress. Nothing to hide here. A standout of this mattress that sets it apart from the other hybrid latex mattresses is that they use recycled cotton denim as the base pad. The base pad does not affect feel at all so it makes sense to use recycled material. There’s just so much waste created when a mattress is discarded so making one with a bit of used material, no matter how small, adds up.

Brentwood Hybrid Construction

Cover Fabric & Handles:

Our hybrid mattress ticking features two luxurious layers: GOTS organic certified cotton, quilted over a foundation layer and fiber stuffing of REPREVE®, an innovative polyester made from recycled plastic bottles (30%) and standard polyester (70%), sourced from Canada. The 6 reinforced handles (two on each long side and two on the foot) are also made from REPREVE®.

Natural Wool:

Under the quilted cover ticking, we add a rich layer of naturally crimped 100% natural wool, sourced from India. No synthetic fibers or flame retardants are included. This wool has received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certification (19.HIN.68466, Hohenstein HTTI).

Natural Latex:

For our core comfort layers, we feature 4-inches of natural Dunlop latex sourced from India. The first 2-inch layer is contour cut with a patent-pending wave design, featuring three strategic zones. This layer is D65 (14-19 ILD) for a soft feel. It is layered over a second 2-inch layer of D75 latex (20-25 ILD) for deep, yet slightly firmer support. The latex latex has received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® (19.HIN.79546, Hohenstein HTTI): Class 1 certification, plus eco-INSTITUT®, FSC® and Rainforest Alliance® certifications.

Flax Fiber Pad:

A thin GOTS organic certified natural flax fiber pad, sourced from the Netherlands, buffers and transitions between the comfort layers and the support layers of the mattress.

Pocketed Innerspring Unit:

Our 8-inch ActivEdge™ Quantum® Edge coil unit from Leggett & Platt® features up to 975 individually pocketed coils made from up-cycled steel in the United States, plus a reinforced perimeter. Coil Counts: Twin: 572, Twin XL: 681, Full: 727, Queen: 789, King: 975, Cal King: 958

Recycled Cotton Denim Pad:

A 1-inch layer of cotton, made from upcycled blue jean denim (80%), sourced from the cutting scraps during the original manufacturing process, plus a low-melt polyester binder fiber (20%). This layer provides a durable, breathable and supportive base layer, as a greener alternative to polyurethane foam.

How Much Does the Hybrid Latex Cost?

Prices range from $799-$1,99. You get a 365-night trial where you can sleep on it for a year and if you don’t like it within that year, you can return it for free, for a full refund.  You also get a 25-year warranty. That’s one of the best in the industry. Most warranties are only 10 years and these are from companies that haven’t even been around 5 years. Brentwood Home has been around for over 20 years and they are a manufacturer so they are here to stay and honor their warranty.

How Does the Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Feel?

Most latex mattresses will feel a bit firmer than foam. It’s simply because latex doesn’t conform quite as well as foam but latex has its own advantages. Because latex is basically rubber, it is incredibly resilient and literally bounces back instantly, just like a rubber ball, so you get quick recovery, good bounce, which some people seek out, and its just easy to change positions at night.

There is some motion transfer that you can expect from any spring mattress but it is minimal because all the coils work independently. They don’t skimp on any of the components. If anything the spring system would be the first to break down but they use the Legget & Platt coils which are the best in the business so this mattress will have a very long lifespan.

I found it to be great for any sleeping position and that’s thanks to the great coils system which provides great support. If you are a hot sleeper, you’re in luck too because latex doesn’t trap that much heat. When they pour the latex into the mold, it leaves holes behind which increases airflow. The natural wool also helps regulate temperature.

FAQs

How long will the Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress last?

The Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex will last longer than most mattresses. Expect an average lifespan of 10 years. It will last longer for lighter people and a few years less for heavier people.

Do You Need a Box Spring for the Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress?

A box spring is not required. This mattress just needs to be on a firm surface which can include a box spring but also a bed with slats, an adjustable bed or even the floor.

How Does the Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex compare to the Purple Mattress?

This mattress most closely compares to the Purple 3 version of the Purple mattress. The biggest difference is the top layer of this mattress is latex while the Purple uses a proprietary 3-inch grid. Both sleep cool but this mattress is considerably less expensive.

My Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Recommendation

I recommend the Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex to people looking to invest in a quality mattress that will hold up for the long term. If you are on the move a lot and want a more budget-friendly option, there’s cheaper, lighter alternatives but the quality isn’t there. If you are used to the feel of a traditional spring mattress, this would be a better choice than an all-foam mattress. Mattresses with springs have a feel that simply can’t be replicated with foam. This mattress will contour instantly to your body and is going to feel cozy and comfy the first night you sleep on it.

Best Latex Mattress Reviews

Best Latex Mattress Reviews

Kathy Kuo of Kathy Kuo Home in this article beautifully breaks down the budget of setting up a high-end and a standard bedroom. Of course, all the items mentioned are must if you want your bedroom to be cozy and tasteful. One important thing that’s missing from the list of items is a mattress. And it’s critically important.

So why is it missing despite the fact, when at home, a person spends maximum time on the mattress?

Now consider this – according to Statistic Brain, the innerspring mattress is the most common type of mattress sold in the US. However, the satisfaction level is lowest as compared to other forms of mattresses. For instance, mattress made from latex has 80 percent satisfaction rate whereas a memory foam mattress has 81 percent satisfaction rate.

The problem is that a mattress lasts for almost 10 years, and once it’s placed on the bed, people just tend to forget about it. And as they say, out of sight, out of mind. Interestingly, people spend more on the bed, pillows, sheets, and duvet.

They even spend more time and effort when buying a bed or a bed sheet, than they do when buying a mattress forgetting that mattress is more important than anything that’s spread over it.

It should not be forgotten that the quality of the mattress decides the quality of rest or sleep we get. The mattress is also responsible for various aches and pains in different parts of the body.

If you suffer from back pain or spondylitis, the wrong mattress will make you uncomfortable. If you have mobility problems or suffer from conditions like arthritis, the right mattress is essential to ensure that you sleep well and wake up feeling refreshed.

A high quality, comfortable, and medically approved mattress not only gives you a good night’s sleep but also boosts overall health.

Things are changing though. There are mattresses of various types available on the market today. Out of all the available choices, latex mattresses have started to gain recognition because they have significant benefits over other varieties. If you have experienced problems in the past with foam mattresses, latex could be a better choice.

What is Latex?

It is tree sap that’s thick and milky white in color obtained from various plants, such as rubber, poppies, and spurges. The sap slowly tapped (extracted) from the rubber tree is the biggest source of naturally occurring latex. Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, China, and Vietnam are the largest latex rubber producing countries in the world.

For further processing, this tree sap is whipped into a foam and heated to form latex. Latex solidifies on being exposed to air and becomes rubbery. This rubber or latex then is used to manufacture various items, including latex mattresses. It is known to last longer than other mattress materials like foam or polyurethane.

As there are various kinds of latex mattresses available today, and it can be confusing to choose the right one. But before we delve into the different latex mattresses, let’s talk about the various latex varieties.

What Type of Latex is Used in Mattresses?

There are three types of latex used in mattresses:

  • 100 percent natural latex– made from completely natural rubber latex
  • Natural latex– made by combining 85 percent natural rubber latex and 15 synthetic latex
  • Pure latex– made from 20 percent natural rubber latex and 80 percent synthetic latex

These three varieties are different forms of rubber latex obtained from the rubber tree but have a lot of differences.

The 100 percent natural rubber latex mattresses are the most expensive. But even though it costs a lot more than regular mattresses or synthetic latex mattresses, they offer incredible comfort. Natural latex is completely organic, and mattresses made from natural latex are a top pick among those who subscribe to an organic lifestyle. Buying a mattress is a long-term investment, and if you are trying to cut down on the synthetic or artificial substances in your life, organic latex mattress will be extremely beneficial for your health in the long run.

Latex itself offers a better ergonomic experience than most materials. Moreover, natural latex has unsurpassed elasticity, conforming to your body shape and reducing the pressure on muscles while boosting proper circulation. The comfort and gentle support offered by 100 percent natural latex cannot be found in any other types of mattress.

On the downside, because natural latex doesn’t have any synthetic substance added, the inconsistencies at the molecular level cause these mattresses to wear out more easily than synthetic latex mattresses. Although this doesn’t mean that a natural latex mattress will deteriorate quicker than normal, it does have a shorter lifespan than other synthetic varieties.

If you want the feel of natural latex but want a better lifespan and lower price, the second option should be right for you. Although called “natural” latex, it is actually a combination of 80 percent latex and 20 percent synthetic latex.

The mattress industry is flooded with this type of mattresses. If you want to buy natural and environmentally friendly mattresses that will provide good comfort and help you sleep better, while also being value for money, this kind of latex mattress is ideal.

It has all the benefits of 100 percent natural latex, such as flexibility, elasticity, comfort and luxurious feel, and also the durability of synthetic latex. If you test both 100 percent natural latex and the natural and synthetic blend, there is little difference in how the two feel.

The third option, pure latex, is the most commonly used latex blend for latex mattresses. Because it has only 20 percent natural latex, it is easier to manufacture and is also cheaper. Pure latex offers excellent support and comfort but isn’t as natural in feel as the other two types. It doesn’t have all the benefits of natural latex either. But it has great stability and durability while being a much affordable choice.

What are the Benefits of a Latex Mattress?

Latex often isn’t the first choice in mattresses. Several people are actually surprised to learn that latex mattresses are more beneficial to health compared to foam or polyurethane mattresses. Some of the reasons to choose latex mattress are:

Organic and Healthy: Natural latex has nothing synthetic or artificial about it. It is a product of nature, obtained from the sap of the rubber tree. Latex occurs freely in nature and is derived from renewable resources, which means it is environmentally friendly and biodegradable. Latex doesn’t contain any of the solvents or toxic chemicals found in synthetic mattresses. Besides, the trees don’t need to be cut in order to obtain the sap. This means the environment is not harmed during the manufacturing of the mattress. Rubber trees also perform an important function, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and reducing emissions.

Comfortable and Flexible: Rubber is flexible and elastic, and since latex is obtained from rubber, the mattresses have incredible flexibility, offering great comfort. Latex is neither too soft nor too hard, and the natural resilience offers the perfect resistance to the weight of the body in every position. No matter what position you sleep in, latex ensures you are in shape. This is called ‘progressive comfort’ – this means, that the greater the pressure on the mattress, the greater the support it offers. Latex is great at body contouring, keeping your back and spine perfectly straight.

Antibacterial: Dust mites and fleas are a common problem with memory foam mattresses. But latex is naturally antibacterial, anti-dust mite, and resistant to mold and mildew. This is the reason latex is suitable for everyone, including those who are allergic to the latex used in latex gloves. Latex is manufactured by vulcanizing it a high temperature for close to an hour to eliminate all the allergens. Latex is also free from toxins carcinogens found in other mattresses.

Breathability: If you sleep hot, you could have a problem with most synthetic mattresses because they retain body heat and warm up. Mattresses that don’t keep cool are uncomfortable and interfere with sleep quality. Latex, on the other hand, has an open cell structure, which makes them highly breathable. They don’t retain heat and manage to keep cool even on warm nights. You don’t have to keep windows open or turn on the air conditioning just because the mattress doesn’t keep cool. Latex is one of the coolest bedding material you can find today.

Support and Pressure Relief: The natural elasticity of latex provides excellent support to the body’s natural curves and movements, keeping the back and spine straight. Latex mattresses also offer great muscle relaxation and pressure relief, helping you fall asleep easily and improving circulation. The support provided by latex mattresses is good for those suffering from back problems or certain aches and pains. Latex also has minimal motion transfer because it compresses only in the point of contact. There’s little sinkage and bounce, which means people sharing the bed can sleep without getting disturbed.

What are the Disadvantages of a Latex Mattress?

Although the cons of latex mattresses aren’t too big, they should still be considered before purchase. Some of the downsides of latex mattresses are:

  • A new latex mattress might be too firm in the beginning and cause discomfort. But the mattress softens within a couple of days of use.
  • If you buy a synthetic latex mattress, it might compress in particular areas over time. If you intend to exert heavy pressure on the mattress for long periods, you should choose a natural latex mattress or a blended latex mattress.
  • As discussed earlier, natural latex mattresses are very expensive.
  • Latex mattresses are heavy. If you move frequently, the mattress could create portability problems.

What is the Difference Between Dunlop and Talalay Latex?

Dunlop and Talalay are two different kinds of latex bases upon which the manufacturing process is done. The Dunlop technology is the oldest and standard manufacturing process, started in 1929. The Talalay technology is much newer and more complicated, time-consuming, and expensive. As a result, Talalay mattresses are generally pricier than Dunlop ones.

Both Dunlop and Talalay methods use natural latex to produce mattresses in any of the three blends. There are differences between the two types, but they are subtle. The most important difference is the way the mattress is manufactured.

The Dunlop production process is energy efficient. It involves foaming the liquid latex and pouring into a mold. The mold is then sealed and vulcanized. After vulcanization, the foam is washed to remove any soapy residue or excess materials. Next, the foam is dried to remove all moisture.

The Talalay process is more time consuming and complex. The two major differences in the process is the addition of the vacuum and freeze in the Talalay technology. Once the mould is partly filled with latex and sealed, the latex expands by vacuum. The expanded foam is then frozen, and carbon dioxide gas applied, converting the foam to gel. The foam is then vulcanized and washed.

The differences between the two are so subtle that they are hard to tell. In fact, most people won’t be able to tell one apart from the other. The reason why the differences are hyped up is that they are used as selling points by retailers. But Dunlop and Talalay foam look and feel very similar.

Differences between Dunlop and Talalay latex:

  • Dunlop latex is springy, Talalay is bouncy
  • Dunlop latex is denser than Talalay latex
  • Dunlop is a simpler, energy efficient, and cost-effective process than Talalay
  • Talalay mattresses are not softer than Dunlop mattresses.

A common myth is that Talalay latex is softer than Dunlop mattresses. This isn’t true, because both the Dunlop and Talalay processes can be used to manufacture different kinds of foams in various degrees of firmness. Although Dunlop mattresses are heavier and denser, it isn’t necessarily firmer.

Should You Buy Synthetic Latex?

Synthetic materials do have similar physical properties as natural materials, but synthetics are manufactured using petrochemicals that contain harmful substances and carcinogens. Synthetic latex mattresses are made with styrene-butadiene rubber, resulting in cheaper latex beds.

If you cannot buy a natural latex mattress, synthetic latex may be your next best option. But there are some downsides to synthetic latex that you must know of:

  • Synthetic latex mattresses wear out more easily than natural latex
  • Synthetic latex doesn’t have any kind of certification
  • Synthetic materials also produce strong gases and smell in the beginning

Factors to Consider When Buying Latex Mattress

Since a mattress is central to sleep and comfort, it should be chosen with a lot of care. The type of mattress you choose will decide your quality of sleep, comfort, and overall health. Some of the factors to consider before purchase are:

Blend

There are mattresses that use latex in combination with other materials like memory foam, polyurethane, innerspring, or varieties of other foams. Because retailers use the power of upselling and persuasion to make people buy the blended mattresses, customers often get confused about what the right choice is. But when buying a latex mattress, there is nothing better than a natural one. Natural latex is more expensive than blended materials, so if you cannot buy it, synthetic latex is your next best choice.

Firmness

Latex mattresses come in different levels of firmness. You are sure to find a firmness that you are comfortable with, but you have to test carefully before purchase. You can also make use of the trial period, and return the mattress for a full refund if it doesn’t suit you. Almost all major retailers offer the sleep trial. If you are buying the mattress online, thoroughly read reviews to see what others are saying about the product.

Breathability

If you sleep hot, you should look for a mattress that doesn’t trap heat. Latex mattresses generally keep cool, but the additional materials can affect the breathability. This is again when you should utilize the sleep trial. If the mattress retains excess heat, doesn’t have proper airflow, and makes you uncomfortable, you can return the mattress within the sleep trial period. Reading other customer reviews is a good way to determine if the mattress is the right fit.

Layers

A mattress these days can have anything between three and five layers. The greater the number of layers the mattress has, the better support it provides. A mattress with two layers will sink in more easily than a mattress with five layers. If you want more support and firmness, choosing a mattress with more layers is a good idea.

Warranty and Certification

Before purchasing latex mattress, make sure to check the warranty and certification. A latex mattress is more expensive than other mattresses, so it necessary to get at least ten years’ warranty. The higher the warranty, the more responsibility the seller is taking for the product. Aside from the warranty, also make sure that the material is certified for human use. Natural latex comes with certifications, but synthetic latex often doesn’t.
