Two firm beds from the same factory, aimed at different definitions of firm. The Signature Hybrid in its firm build is a conventional firm mattress with a thin comfort layer over coils. The Plank is a flippable, deliberately extreme firm — one side firm, the other side firmer — and it is closer to sleeping on a padded floor than most people expect. Both are cheap for what they are; only one of them is a safe first firm mattress.
Bottom line: If you have never owned a genuinely firm bed, start with the Signature Hybrid. If you have already decided every mattress you have owned was too soft, the Plank is the one that will not disappoint you in that direction.

Tested metrics, side by side
These are our own scores from the same evaluation protocol applied to every mattress in our database, so the columns are directly comparable. Each row explains what the metric actually measures, because a number without a definition is decoration.

Which should you buy?
Stomach sleepers
This is the position that most needs a firm surface, because any hip sink hyperextends the lower back. Both work; the firmer one works harder.
Back sleepers with lower-back pain
Firm helps only up to the point where the lumbar curve loses contact with the bed. If you can slide a flat hand under your lower back, the mattress is too firm for you.
Side sleepers
Neither of these is your bed. A firm surface at the shoulder is the fastest route to a numb arm — look at the softer beds in our position and body-weight matrix instead.
Bargain hunters
Both queens sit below most of the market at these scores. Compare the price row against the trial length before deciding.
Delivery, trials and fine print
The flippable model has no single ‘top’, which affects how you use a mattress protector and how you rotate it. Yawnder white-glove delivery and setup is $200 in eligible areas.

Frequently asked questions
- How firm is the Plank Firm really?
-
Our measured firmness value is in the specification table, on a 10-point scale where 6.5 is medium-firm. It is one of the firmest mattresses we have scored, and the extra-firm side is firmer still.
- Can I soften a too-firm mattress with a topper?
-
Yes — a topper can add comfort layer, and this is the one direction that works. You cannot go the other way: no topper adds support to a bed that is too soft for you.
- Are these good for heavier sleepers?
-
A firm coil-supported bed is generally a better bet at higher body weight than a soft foam one, but see our Big Fig vs Saatva HD comparison if you are over roughly 300 lb and want a purpose-built build.
- Which side of the flippable model should I start on?
-
Start on the firm side, not the extra-firm side, and give it two weeks. Flipping is easy; recalibrating your back is not.
