Which IKEA mattress should you choose?
Best starting point for a budget spring mattress: VALEVÅG
The $100 step from VESTERÖY to VALEVÅG buys a taller, zoned design on the inspected listings. I would compare both in store before adding an expensive topper to the cheaper bed. Check whether your shoulder can settle without your waist losing support; the word “medium-firm” alone cannot answer that.
Lowest-cost coil choice: VESTERÖY
VESTERÖY makes sense when the budget and a lower profile matter more than extra comfort layers. It is worth trying for a guest room or first apartment. Do not assume a firm mattress will suit a lighter side sleeper just because it costs less.
For a more layered spring feel: VÅGSTRANDA
Its two-layer spring design gives you a different construction to compare against VALEVÅG. Whether that is worth another $150 depends on the actual firmness that fits you. More zones are a design feature, not proof of better sleep.
For foam contouring with coils: ÅNNELAND
Compare ÅNNELAND if you like some memory-foam cushioning but want to keep a spring support core. Its removable, washable cover is a practical advantage. Memory foam still feels different from the faster response of a simpler spring mattress; try rolling over and getting out of bed.
For an all-foam option: ÅKREHAMN
ÅKREHAMN is a separate choice rather than a cheaper version of ÅNNELAND: there are no coils. The medium-firm and firm versions deserve separate testing. If you already know you dislike foam contouring, start with the spring models.
Firmness, sleep position and couples
For side sleeping, compare shoulder and hip cushioning across more than one firmness. For back sleeping, look for even support without an exaggerated hollow under the waist. For stomach sleeping, check that the pelvis does not sink noticeably below the chest. These are fit checks, not promises that one firmness works for an entire body type.
Couples should lie on the same sample together. Have one person turn over while the other stays still, then check usable edge space. The 90-day IKEA mattress exchange explained
IKEA’s U.S. Love it or exchange it policy permits one mattress exchange within 90 days, with proof of purchase and a mattress that is clean and undamaged. IKEA recommends allowing about a month to adjust. A higher-priced replacement requires paying the difference; a lower-priced replacement leaves the difference on an IKEA refund card.
This is an exchange policy, so do not treat it as an unconditional cash-back sleep trial. The policy describes collection and replacement delivery without an added charge when the original mattress used IKEA Home Delivery. Bases, slats and toppers are excluded from that mattress exchange offer. Review the terms before arranging transport.
Foundations, care and the 10-year warranty
A warranty covers qualifying defects under its written terms; it is separate from comfort fit. The U.S. mattress warranty booklet explains eligible components, exclusions and proof-of-purchase requirements.
Support and care instructions differ by model. VÅGSTRANDA’s inspected page specifies a mattress base or non-adjustable slatted base and says not to wash the mattress. ÅNNELAND and ÅKREHAMN have washable covers, with line drying specified on their inspected pages. A zipper alone is not permission to remove or wash a cover. Follow the instructions for the exact article number.
Allow a roll-packed mattress to regain its shape before judging its final profile. Keep the article number, receipt and care instructions. If you want an adjustable bed, obtain model-specific confirmation rather than assuming every IKEA foam or hybrid mattress is compatible.
Replacing an older IKEA mattress
An older HÖVÅG, HAUGSVÄR, MORGEDAL or SULTAN review does not establish the feel of a current mattress. There is no automatic one-to-one replacement based on the old price or the nearest-sounding name. Record the old model’s construction and firmness, then try current models that match those preferences.
A clearance label also needs context: check the exact article number, condition, local stock and applicable exchange terms. Avoid a used mattress whose condition cannot be inspected, or a model bought mainly to recreate a discontinued bed without trying it first.
Before you buy
- Compare at least two models in your normal sleeping position.
- Confirm U.S. size, article number, firmness and maximum frame clearance.
- Price the mattress, delivery, support base and protector together.
- Read the exchange rules and warranty for the selected item.
- Check washability and adjustable-base compatibility separately.
