Eco-Friendly Mattress Guide: How to Avoid Greenwashing

Ben
mattresses and greenwashing

Quick answer: Ask what the environmental claim covers, who verified it and whether the certificate applies to the exact mattress or only one component. Terms such as “natural,” “green” and “non-toxic” are too broad to compare products on their own.

For mattress options, see our eco-friendly mattress buying guide. This guide focuses on checking the evidence behind the claims.

Five claims worth checking closely

Claim Ask the seller Why it matters
“Organic mattress” Is the finished product certified, or only a cover or latex layer? Component certification does not automatically cover the entire mattress.
“Natural latex” What is the composition of this layer and is it certified? Natural, organic and synthetic describe different attributes.
“Low emissions” Which product was tested, under which standard, and is the certificate current? Emissions certification addresses specified testing criteria, not every possible health concern.
“Recyclable” or “biodegradable” Which components, under what conditions and where can they be processed? A mixed-material mattress may require separation and local services may differ.
“Carbon neutral” What activities and dates are included, and what reductions or offsets support the claim? A narrow operational claim may not cover the full life cycle of the mattress.

The FTC’s Green Guides summary advises marketers to qualify broad environmental claims and support them with evidence. Specific information gives shoppers something they can actually verify.

Understanding certification scope

  • GOTS: Check the certificate, product scope and label grade. The standard distinguishes an organic grade from a “made with” organic materials grade. Do not assume every non-textile component of a certified mattress is organic.
  • GOLS: Check the covered latex and the certificate. A qualifying latex component does not mean that the entire mattress is GOLS-certified.
  • GREENGUARD Gold: UL describes a chemical-emissions certification. Confirm the exact product listing; it is not proof that a mattress is organic or chemical-free.
  • CertiPUR-US: The program certifies eligible flexible polyurethane foam, not the finished mattress. Check which layers are covered.

How to verify a mattress claim

  1. Write down the exact model, size and claim you are checking.
  2. Ask for the certification number, certifier, current dates and product scope. Use the certifier’s database where available.
  3. Compare the certificate with the construction list: cover, comfort layers, core, adhesives and fire barrier may have different scopes.
  4. Read qualifiers. A claim about one organic layer is not the same as a claim about a finished mattress.
  5. Keep the product page and seller’s terms with your order, and ask what happens at end of life in your location.

Examples of questions to ask brands

When considering Naturepedic, Avocado or PlushBeds, ask for the certificate and layer breakdown for the model you are comparing. A claim about a brand, factory or component should not be assumed to apply to every product in the range.

Frequently asked questions

Does “organic” mean every part of a mattress is organic?

Not necessarily. Check the applicable standard’s label grade and the certificate’s scope. A mattress can contain steel and other non-organic components.

Is natural latex automatically safe for everyone?

No material is suitable for everyone. People with latex allergies or sensitivities should review the materials with a qualified clinician.

Does a low-emissions certification guarantee no odor?

No. Emissions testing and perceived odor are different things, and a certification evaluates specified criteria rather than every possible response.

Is a mattress recyclable because it contains steel?

Not automatically. The assembled mattress may need to be separated, and acceptance varies by local facility. Ask your recycling provider about the specific product.

Our verdict

Look for a precise claim, a current certificate and a clear description of what was certified. Compare that evidence alongside comfort, durability, delivery and return terms.

Continue with what “non-toxic” means, eco-friendly mattress options and construction and durability.
