Find out why your Split King is separating
Two Twin XL mattresses create a Split King, but their center seam is normal. A widening gap usually needs a different fix from a seam you can feel when both beds are correctly aligned. Before buying accessories, compare the position of each mattress with the edge of its base and the position of the base legs on the floor.

Step 1: Check the base connectors and mattress retainers
Locate your exact base model’s manual. If the manufacturer supplies connecting straps or brackets, install them only at the designated points. Some bases use connectors; others have a different setup. A synchronization cable controls movement and should never be treated as a structural strap.
Check that any supplied mattress retainer bars are correctly installed. These typically limit movement toward the foot of the bed, but do not necessarily prevent sideways drift. Ask the manufacturer about approved side retainers if that is the problem.
Do not improvise connections with zip ties or bungee cords, attach restraints to moving sections, or drill new holes. Request the correct replacement hardware when original parts are missing. Follow the manual’s power-disconnection and handling instructions before working under or repositioning the base.
Step 2: Address sliding at the correct surface
If the bases move across the floor: check that all legs are secure, supported and set to compatible heights. Ask the base manufacturer whether non-slip furniture cups are suitable for its leg design and your flooring. Get help moving a heavy base; do not lift it by moving deck sections.
If the mattresses slide on stationary bases: ask about an approved grip layer. Tempur-Pedic recommends a non-slip mat or carpet backing for shifting Split King mattresses. Confirm suitability for your own model, especially if it has an airflow or climate-control system. Keep vents, sensors, hinges and moving components clear.
A floor grip will not solve mattress-on-deck movement, and a mattress grip will not stop the entire base moving across the room.
Step 3: Consider a bed bridge only after alignment is fixed
A foam wedge or bed bridge can make a narrow center seam less noticeable when the mattresses are level. It cannot correct mismatched mattress heights or keep loose bases together, and its raised edges may still be noticeable.
Before buying, check mattress height, gap width, return terms and whether the accessory explicitly supports independently adjustable beds. Do not assume that a product advertised for two Twin XL mattresses works when one side rises and the other stays flat. Follow both the bridge and base instructions; if independent adjustment is not supported, remove the bridge before operating the beds separately.
Step 4: Match toppers and bedding to how the beds move
A single King topper spans both mattresses. It may soften the seam on an otherwise compatible flat setup, but it also joins the sleeping surfaces and is generally a poor choice when partners want independent adjustment. It will not fix inadequate mattress support or guarantee that the gap disappears.

Step 5: Check the surrounding frame and clearances
A compatible surrounding bed frame may help define the bases’ positions, but a headboard alone is not a mattress restraint. Use only the mounting brackets and clearances specified for your base and furniture.
Make sure neither side catches the frame, headboard or bedding as it articulates. Tempur-Pedic specifically advises allowing clearance at padded headboards. Stop using a setup that binds, pulls on connectors or shows damaged hardware and contact the manufacturer or installer.
What to buy first
Buy for the diagnosed problem: replacement manufacturer hardware for missing connectors, approved floor grips for base movement, or a compatible mattress grip for deck slippage. Consider a bridge only for remaining seam discomfort. You may not need a new mattress at all.

Can I eliminate the gap completely?
Two separate mattresses retain a center seam. Alignment and compatible accessories can reduce discomfort, but do not guarantee the feel of a single mattress.
Can both sides still adjust independently with a bed bridge?
Only if the bridge and bed manufacturers support that use. A conventional bridge or full-width topper can shift or resist movement when the sides are at different heights.
Can I use zip ties instead of the original straps?
Use the base manufacturer’s specified replacement connectors. Improvised restraints may attach at the wrong points or interfere with movement.
Why does a gap remain after I secure the bases?
The mattresses may be sliding on their decks, have rounded edges, or differ in height. Check mattress alignment and fit separately from base movement.
Will a headboard keep the mattresses together?
Not by itself. A headboard provides a furniture attachment, not a reliable sideways mattress restraint. Follow the base’s bracket and clearance instructions.
