Helix Kids Mattress

Buying a mattress for a child is a different problem from buying one for yourself. A growing sleeper is light, so a bed that feels medium to an adult is effectively firm to them; the mattress will be slept on for a decade if it lasts; and it will be jumped on, spilled on and slept on sideways. That means the metrics that matter are durability, firmness and how washable the cover is — not plushness.

Bottom line: All three are honest kids’ beds at a fair price. Choose on materials and durability, and do not buy soft: a light body does not compress a comfort layer the way an adult does, so a plush kids’ bed becomes an unsupportive one.

Tested metrics, side by side

These are our own scores from the same evaluation protocol applied to every mattress in our database, so the columns are directly comparable. Each row explains what the metric actually measures, because a number without a definition is decoration.

Which should you buy?

Toddler moving to a big bed

Firm, low-profile, washable cover. Skip anything with a deep pillow-top; height matters for getting in and out safely.

Older child or pre-teen

Buy the bed you would want them to keep. At these prices, a bed with a good durability outlook is cheaper over ten years than replacing a bargain one twice.

Bunk beds and trundles

Check the mattress height against your bunk’s safety rail before anything else. Our trundle and low-profile guidance covers the numbers.

Allergy-prone kids

Natural latex and wool builds and a washable cover help more than any ‘hypoallergenic’ claim on a foam bed.

Delivery, trials and fine print

A third option, the Nolah Nurture, is scored alongside these two below. Yawnder white-glove delivery and setup is $200 in eligible areas; a twin-size kids’ mattress is usually a straightforward self-setup.

Frequently asked questions

How firm should a kids’ mattress be?

Firmer than you would choose for yourself. A 60 lb child does not sink into a comfort layer the way an adult does, so the effective firmness they experience is higher than the number on the spec sheet.

Are flippable kids’ mattresses worth it?

Yes, when the two sides are aimed at different ages — one firmer side for a young child and a softer side for a heavier pre-teen extends the useful life of the mattress considerably.

Do kids’ mattresses come with a trial?

Lengths are in the specification table. Note that Yawnder does not offer trials on bedding, sheets or mattress protectors — buy the protector on the assumption you are keeping it.

Is a waterproof protector necessary?

For any child under about eight, yes, and it protects the warranty as well as the mattress. Most mattress warranties are void the moment there is a stain.

How this comparison was produced: every score, price, firmness value, trial and warranty figure above comes from our own scored mattress database, using the protocol described in how we test. Editorial judgement — which bed suits which sleeper — is labelled as such and is not a measurement. Yawnder earns affiliate commission on some links and also sells mattresses directly; commission never changes a score or a rank. See our editorial policy.
