Costco: the policy is the product
Costco’s guarantee is the most shopper-friendly language in mainstream retail — it guarantees your satisfaction on every product it sells and will refund the purchase price, with a specific list of exceptions covering electronics, appliances, diamonds, custom orders and similar categories. Mattresses are not in that exceptions list. The catch is logistics, not policy: a bed bought in the warehouse has to be brought back to the warehouse, and large freight-delivered items follow their own freight-return process.
- No clock. Nothing in the merchandise guarantee sets a mattress deadline.
- Membership cost is real. $65 or $130 a year, and the membership fee itself is refundable if you are dissatisfied.
- Almost no testing. Warehouses stock boxed mattresses; you are buying on spec sheets and reviews.

Mattress Firm: you pay for the showroom
Mattress Firm’s 120 Night Sleep Trial is well defined and worth reading closely, because the fee structure surprises people. You must sleep on the bed a minimum of 30 nights. Then the trial covers one exchange and/or one return within 120 days of the original delivery date. The exchange carries a $149 fee; if the replacement is also wrong, returning it carries the $149 fee again. The fee does not apply in Hawaii.
- Law tag rule is strict. Removing the white law tag voids the trial, and drivers inspect the bed before taking it.
- Stains end it. Stained, unsanitary or damaged mattresses cannot be exchanged or refunded, so use a waterproof protector.
- Special-order sizes are final — three-quarter, crib, futon and similar. In California, California King and Split California King are not treated as special order and remain eligible.
