Choose the right Beautyrest Black family
Beautyrest Black is no longer a single ladder of class names. Start with quilted Black, smooth Black Hybrid or Black Hybrid XCS, then compare the exact series, firmness and top.
Updated October 8, 2026. This review and brand hub assesses manufacturer specifications and published buying terms. It does not assign hands-on test scores to these current models.
Current models compared
Beautyrest Black now divides into three distinct families. The standard Black models use a quilted surface. Black Hybrid uses a smoother ContourFit surface. Black Hybrid XCS is a separate family with its own cover, foam and cooling package. A “Series Three” label only makes sense after you know which family it belongs to.
| Model / family | Verified construction highlights | How to shortlist it | Observed Queen price |
|---|---|---|---|
Black Series One | Quilted top, triple-stranded pocketed coils and gel memory foam. | Start here for the core Black construction. | $2,199–$2,799 |
Black Series Two | Adds SurfaceTouch gel foam and MicroDiamond foam. | Consider if the different comfort layers improve your in-store fit. | $3,199–$3,399 |
Black Series Three | Adds Self-Response latex; 2K Nano Coils in pillow-top models. | Useful step up for a more elaborate pressure-relief package. | $3,999–$4,399 |
Black Series Four | Premium quilted lineup with 4K Nano Coils and latex. | Try when a more layered pillow-top feel justifies the higher price. | $5,599 |
Black Hybrid Series One | Smooth ContourFit surface over foam and pocketed coils. | The entry Black Hybrid option for closer surface contouring. | $2,199–$2,699 |
Black Hybrid Series Three | FORM HD foam and latex; 2K Nano Coils are specific to the Medium version. | Compare by firmness: the construction is not identical across variants. | $3,899–$4,399 |
Black Hybrid Series Four | Apex Top comfort build with 4K Nano Coils and premium foams. | A taller, more elaborate Black Hybrid option. | $5,599 |
Black Hybrid XCS Series Three | ContourCover, FORM HD foam and the BlackICE MAX / MicroDiamond cooling package. | Start of the current XCS family; optional split-head configuration. | $3,999 |
Black Hybrid XCS Series Four | Adds 2K Nano Coils and additional high-density comfort foams. | For buyers comparing deeper XCS contouring and split-head options. | $4,499–$4,999 |
Black Hybrid XCS Series Five Plush | Deep-plush comfort, 4K Nano Coils and a high-density foam perimeter. | The plush XCS flagship, rather than an all-purpose firm option. | $5,699 |
The checked current catalog lists Hybrid Series One, Three and Four. It does not list a Black Hybrid Series Two alongside them. XCS has Series Three, Four and Five Plush. An old retailer chart showing a different sequence should be checked against the exact current product page.
Black Series Three illustrates why top style matters: its Nano Coil feature is tied to pillow-top versions. Likewise, Black Hybrid Series Three does not put the same microcoil layer into every firmness. Get the specification sheet for the exact feel and top you are buying.
Construction & cooling

Quilted Black versus smooth Black Hybrid
A quilted surface puts its initial cushioning into the fabric and quilting package. A smooth hybrid cover lets you feel more of the foam immediately underneath. That can change how readily your shoulders enter the bed even when two models are both called Medium. Compare those surfaces before deciding that the higher series number is the better mattress.
All of the checked Black families use Beautyrest’s triple-stranded pocketed-coil support system. The manufacturer presents that as a durability and support feature. It does not establish an independent lifespan estimate, a maximum body weight or a measured motion-isolation score for every Black mattress.
What latex, Nano Coils and denser foam add
Self-Response latex supplies a responsive comfort material in selected higher-tier builds. Nano Coils are smaller comfort coils above the main support unit, rather than a replacement for it. Those layers can change surface response and pressure distribution, but coil counts alone do not tell you which mattress fits your body.
FORM HD and other high-density foam names appear in the premium Hybrid and XCS builds. Treat the published layer package as the starting point for comparison. When a retailer cannot provide foam density or the thickness of an individual layer, do not fill in the missing number from a different Black model.
Cooling claims need context
MicroDiamond, BlackICE MAX and Sleep Climate are manufacturer technologies or marketing names. They identify the material package; they are not Yawnder temperature measurements. A cool first touch can be useful, but sheets, room temperature, mattress protectors and the depth of your sink also affect overnight heat. We would pay for the comfort improvement you can actually identify, rather than assume a cooling label guarantees a cool night.
Sleeper fit
These recommendations are construction-based starting points for a showroom comparison. No current-model pressure map or objective firmness score is assigned in this guide.
- Side sleepers: compare a Medium or Plush against its pillow-top counterpart. Your shoulder should enter the surface without forcing the waist to hang unsupported. A firmer premium model can still be a worse fit than a lower-series Medium.
- Back sleepers: start with the feel that holds your pelvis level and supports the small of your back. Compare quilted Black and smooth Hybrid directly; surface feel can matter more than the tier label.
- Stomach sleepers: prioritize a firmer configuration with less pelvic sink. XCS Series Five Plush is a different brief from a firm, flatter sleep surface.
- Couples: pocketed coils and foam are relevant to movement control, but test rolling over and sitting on the edge with both partners present. A split-head XCS is a connected mattress with an independently adjustable head area; it is not the same purchase as two separate Twin XL mattresses.
- Heavier sleepers: assess support through the comfort layers and the perimeter in person. More layers and a higher price do not automatically mean a higher supported weight limit.
Value, pros & cons
Our first comparison would be Black Series One versus the specific Series Three feel you like. That makes it easier to decide whether latex, the top package and any applicable Nano Coils produce a noticeable benefit. Buyers who prefer a smooth foam-forward surface should make the same comparison inside the Black Hybrid family.
At the upper end, the standard Series Four and Hybrid Series Four sit around $5,599 in the checked Queen configurations. The meaningful question is what the extra layers do for your comfort compared with a less expensive model. Include delivery, old-bed removal, the foundation and the seller’s return cost in that comparison.
The XCS family is worth a separate try if its cover/foam package or split-head option addresses a particular need. It should not be treated as a simple renamed Series Four. Different model families can overlap in price while offering a different surface response.
Reasons to consider it
- A broad choice of firmness and top styles within a recognizable current lineup.
- Pocketed-coil support combined with several comfort-material options.
- Direct-site in-home delivery and an explicit trial policy.
Tradeoffs to consider
- Premium tiers carry a substantial price increase.
- Firmness and top style can change the specification within one series.
- Retailer-only offers and older class names make simple price matching difficult.
Trial, delivery & warranty
| Current families | Black quilted · Black Hybrid · Black Hybrid XCS |
|---|---|
| Direct-site trial | 100 nights from arrival; one trial return or exchange per household in a 12-month period |
| Direct-site warranty | 10-year limited warranty; defects and exclusions are governed by the written warranty |
| Direct-site delivery | White-glove setup and old-mattress removal advertised by Beautyrest |
| Retailer purchases | The selling retailer’s delivery, exchange and refund terms apply |
Beautyrest’s published return policy applies to mattresses bought from Beautyrest.com. A mattress bought at a department store, warehouse club or independent dealer can have a different return fee, exchange-only rule or deadline. Keep the invoice and the exact model identifier.
For an XCS split-head order, confirm the dimensions, compatible base and bedding before ordering. For any Black model, confirm the required foundation support and the overall bed height after adding the mattress to your frame. A mattress trial covers comfort under its terms; a limited warranty covers specified defects. They solve different problems.
Older Black models
Older L-Class, C-Class, K-Class and KX-Class names describe earlier Beautyrest Black lineups. They do not map one-for-one onto the current Series One–Four, Black Hybrid or XCS models. An older hands-on review can still explain the mattress it tested, but its materials, price and feel should not be transferred to a new series with a similar position in the lineup.
If you are comparing a clearance class-era mattress with a current model, ask for the build date, whether it is a floor sample, the exact warranty and whether the transaction is final sale. A closeout can be good value when you know exactly what is covered.
For those earlier models, see our archived Beautyrest Black K-Class review and Beautyrest Black Calista review. They remain model-specific historical coverage.

Frequently asked questions
Is Beautyrest Black still a current mattress line?
Yes. The checked current catalog includes the quilted Black series, Black Hybrid and Black Hybrid XCS. This page compares those current families and separates them from older class-era names.
Is Series Four always better than Series One?
It has a more elaborate comfort package and a higher observed price. The better purchase is the firmness and surface that fits your body; a higher series number does not establish that fit.
Do all Beautyrest Black models have latex and microcoils?
No. Those are model- and sometimes top-specific features. Black Series Three’s Nano Coils are associated with pillow-top versions, and Black Hybrid Series Three’s 2K layer is specific to the Medium variant.
Does Black Hybrid XCS replace the standard Black lineup?
The current catalog presents XCS as a separate Black Hybrid family alongside standard Black and Black Hybrid. Compare the full family name, series and firmness.
What trial do I get from a retailer?
Use the written policy from the retailer selling the mattress. Beautyrest.com’s 100-night policy should not be assumed to cover a different seller.
Can this guide tell me the current models’ tested cooling or motion scores?
No. The present update is based on manufacturer specifications and buying terms. Cooling technologies and predicted fit are labeled accordingly.
