Purple 4 Mattress Review

Purple Mattress
Bottom line

The Purple 4 mattress is a luxury hybrid featuring 4 inches of Purple's Smart Grid technology, designed for superior bounce and contouring. It is ideal for side sleepers seeking a weightless sensation, but its premium price point may be a consideration for budget-conscious buyers. The mattress maintains excellent motion isolation despite its coil system.

Yawnder verdictPinnacle of luxury mattresses · 4.8/5

Purple discontinued the Hybrid 2, Hybrid Premier 3, and Hybrid Premier 4 mattresses in early 2023. The company replaced these mattresses with three new collections: Essential, Premium, and Luxe. Each collection has three mattresses in them.

The Essential collection is the most affordable, and the Luxe collection is the most expensive. The Premium collection is in the middle.

Purple said that it discontinued the Hybrid 2, Hybrid Premier 3, and Hybrid Premier 4 mattresses to simplify its product lineup and focus on its new collections. The company also said that the new collections offer better value for customers.

If you are looking for a Purple mattress, I recommend checking out the new Essential, Premium, and Luxe collections. The company offers a 100-night sleep trial on all of its mattresses, so you can try one out before you buy it.

The Purple 4 mattress is the premiere luxury model from Purple. It has 4 inches of their signature smart grid technology on top and below that are pocket springs that provide extra bounce and more contouring. It is surrounded by a foam encasement for superior edge support. I was just as excited to try this mattress as I was the original Purple over 2 years ago. In short, this is the ultimate side sleeper mattress. You will experience an almost weightless feeling on this mattress. If you are only an occasional side sleeper or more of a back sleeper, I would check out the Purple 3 mattress review.

Unboxing the Purple 4

Unlike the Original Purple, the Purple 4 comes in a box the size of the mattress. Here’s the box that my queen size came in:

Overview of the Purple 4 Bed

This mattress along with the Purple 2 and 3 are more of an evolution of the Original Purple. What sets these models apart is that they include a pocket coil system instead of foam. Despite having springs they still contain motion incredibly well.

Here’s a video overview with me on the Purple 4. The cover of this mattress stretches to work with the mattress. I also highly recommend the Purple Sheets and Purple Mattress Protector because they are also stretchy and breathable. They also have a heavier duty elastic band to keep the bedding from slipping off the mattress.

My Purple 4 Mattress Findings

This is a mattress that you really sink into. In fact, it is the plushest among the entire Purple mattress line. Below is a photo showing how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress.

This is a very bouncy mattress as well but not in a bad way. You get lots of quick recovery with the smart grid system and true bounce with the springs underneath but despite the bounciness, motion transfer is contained very well.

Here’s a video to illustrate this point.

Purple is one of the coolest sleeping mattresses on the market. If sleeping hot is your primary concern, you owe it to yourself to try the Purple. You don’t lose any of this benefit with more of the smart grid. Below is a video illustrating heat retention on the Purple 4. It was taken with my infrared camera. I don’t think this video quite does the mattress justice as heat is constantly dissipating through the grid keeping you cool.

Take a peek inside. Here’s an up-close shot of the inside of the Purple. Notice how the comfort grid system bounces back instantly. It’s almost like a jello type of responsiveness.

Here’s a peek inside the purple. I pulled back the foam border so you can see the spring system inside.

My Purple 4 Recommendation

The Purple 4 is the ideal mattress for hot sleepers that want a luxury feel that is supportive and cool sleeping. I really like that they added springs to these models because it creates a seamless transition. People who have tried memory foam and can’t handle them because of sleeping hot owe it to themselves to give the purple a try.

The Eight Sleep Pod Pillow Review: High-Tech Comfort or Overpriced Hype?

Eight Sleep carbon pillow review
Bottom line

The Eight Sleep Pod Pillow combines memory foam comfort with advanced sleep tracking technology and a smart alarm system. It is ideal for those seeking detailed sleep data and a gentle wake-up, but may be an over-engineered solution for sleepers simply wanting a basic pillow. Its dual-sided design offers versatility, though the single loft might not suit all preferences.

Yawnder verdictInnovative sleep tech accessory · 4.8/5

The Eight Sleep Pillow has a number of features that make it stand out from other pillows on the market:

  • Cooling: The carbon-infused foam and phase-change material help to draw heat away from your body, keeping you cool and comfortable all night long.
  • Supportive: The Eight Sleep Pillow is designed to provide support for your head, neck, and shoulders, helping to reduce pain and stiffness.
  • Breathable: The pillow cover is made from a breathable TENCEL mesh fabric, which helps to promote airflow and prevent heat buildup.
  • Durable: The Eight Sleep Pillow is made with high-quality materials and construction, so it is built to last.

The Eight Sleep Pillow is available in two sizes, standard and king, and it comes with a five-year warranty.

Eight Sleep is a tech-focused sleep company that makes some really innovative products. I recently reviewed their Pod sleep system which is can regulate your temperature as you sleep resulting in better, more restorative sleep. In keeping with their theme of regulating temperature, they have launched the Carbon Air Pillow which is designed to keep your head cool. This is primarily a foam pillow with a good helping of phase change material on one side. It retails for $150 which is expensive but in my experience, it is one of the few all foam pillows that actually lives up to its claims.

Overview of the Eight Sleep Pillow

carbon infused pillow

This pillow is a foam pillow infused with carbon. What are the benefits of a carbon-infused pillow? Carbon is known for its ability to absorb odors and moisture making a perfect addition to pillows that are in constant contact with your skin and breath.  As you can see in the picture above the pillow has tiny holes which make it very breathable. If you press down on the pillow you will feel air flow through it, it also makes the pillow softer and recover faster.  On the other side you will find the phase change material that is cool to the touch and helps dissipate heat. So, if you want an even cooler pillow, you would use this side.

cool side of eight sleep pillow

All these technologies add up to a cool and comfortable pillow. There are many pillows on the market that have the cool to the touch phase change material but how much they use varies considerably. This means that it may feel cool for a few minutes but then dissipate rapidly. The same could be said with this pillow but I found that they use quite a bit of the phase change material but they way the pillow is engineered makes it cool, even without the phase change material.

Here you can see how quickly the pillow recovers.

Finally, the pillow is covered in a zippable cover made of Tencel fabric. Tencel fiber is cooler than cotton and even silk.

My Eight Sleep Pillow Recommendation

This pillow only comes in one size and I would say its made for people with a medium build. I found it to be a little too thin for my larger frame for side sleeping although it would work fine for stomach or back sleeping. That said, you can always put another pillow under it for support and it won’t take away from the cooling effect.

This pillow comes with a 5-year warranty which is impressive. It’s not often I come across pillows with any warranty. You also get a 30-day trial where you can try it out for 30 days and if you don’t like it, you get a full refund.

The Eight Sleep carbon cool pillow is a great choice for hot sleepers. It is soft and comfortable giving you all the pressure-relieving benefits of foam without all the drawbacks of heat retention.

Eight Sleep Pillow vs. Malouf Pillow. Similar but Different

The Eight Sleep Pillow and the Malouf Carbon Cool Pillow are both premium pillows that are designed to help you sleep better. However, there are some key differences between the two pillows.

Eight Sleep Pillow

  • Made with carbon-infused foam and a proprietary phase-change material to help you stay cool and comfortable throughout the night.
  • Designed to provide support for your head, neck, and shoulders.
  • Breathable TENCEL mesh fabric cover.
  • Available in standard and king sizes.
  • Comes with a five-year warranty.

Malouf Carbon Cool Pillow

  • Made with carbon-infused memory foam to help draw heat away from your body.
  • Designed to provide support for your head and neck.
  • Breathable fabric cover.
  • Available in standard and king sizes.
  • Comes with a one-year warranty.

The biggest difference between the two pillows is the type of foam used. The Eight Sleep Pillow uses carbon-infused foam, while the Malouf Carbon Cool Pillow uses carbon-infused memory foam. Carbon-infused foam is a newer type of foam that is designed to be more breathable and cooling than traditional memory foam.

Another difference between the two pillows is the warranty. The Eight Sleep Pillow comes with a five-year warranty, while the Malouf Carbon Cool Pillow comes with a one-year warranty.

Overall, the Eight Sleep Pillow is a more premium pillow than the Malouf Carbon Cool Pillow. It is made with higher quality materials and has a longer warranty. However, the Malouf Carbon Cool Pillow is a good option for people on a budget.

Frequently Asked Questions About The Eight Sleep Pod Pillow Review: High-Tech Comfort or Overpriced Hype?

Is the Eight Sleep Pod Pillow worth the price?

The Eight Sleep Pod Pillow's worth depends on your desire for detailed sleep tracking and a gentle intelligent alarm system, as it excels in these smart features over active temperature control. While it provides premium comfort, its primary value lies in its data insights and smart wake-up technology rather than innovative heating or cooling.

Who is the Eight Sleep Pod Pillow best for?

The Eight Sleep Pod Pillow is best for individuals who are invested in detailed sleep tracking and appreciate a gentle, smart alarm based on sleep cycles. It suits those looking to integrate sleep data into their health regimen and want a premium, technologically advanced pillow for their head and neck.

What are the downsides of the Eight Sleep Pod Pillow?

One downside of the Eight Sleep Pod Pillow is its lack of active heating or cooling, a feature often associated with the brand's other products. Its single loft limitation, despite dual-sided comfort, means it may not perfectly suit all body types or preferred sleeping positions. From our testing at Yawnder, we found that those purely seeking temperature regulation might be disappointed.

Is the Eight Sleep Pod Pillow good for neck pain?

The Eight Sleep Pod Pillow is designed with an adaptive memory foam core that aims to contour to your head and neck, which is crucial for maintaining proper spinal alignment and preventing neck pain. Its dual-sided feature, offering both solid and shredded foam, allows for some personalization in firmness to support neck health.

How does the Eight Sleep Pod Pillow compare to a standard memory foam pillow?

The Eight Sleep Pod Pillow differentiates itself from a standard memory foam pillow primarily through its embedded sleep-tracking sensors and smart alarm capabilities. While both offer comfort, the Pod Pillow provides detailed insights into your sleep patterns and gentle awakening, functionalities absent in a conventional pillow.

Where can I try the Eight Sleep Pod Pillow in person?

As San Diego's sleep experts, Yawnder has put the Eight Sleep Pod Pillow to the test, and while we review it, the article does not specify if the product is available for in-person trial in our Encinitas showroom. For specific availability, we recommend contacting our showroom directly.

Want to test this in person? Visit our Encinitas showroom or call 858-232-5760.
